Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Mike Newell:

'I’d known Jake for a long time because I’d known his parents and worked with his sister, but I’d never worked with him. His face is his fortune. He looks like he has one layer of skin fewer than anyone else; he’s tender and vulnerable in a way that a lot of people aren’t. But then he made himself into an action hero. I saw him do it, step by step. Of course the stunt man is there, because of insurance, but Jake did all his own riding, his own fighting, his own gymnastics. It’s something that you don’t see until you look at the whole movie and think: Christ, he actually did that. On the one hand he gave what I expected him to give, which is the sensitive actor stuff. But on the other, he really worked hard.'

Sir Ben Kingsley:

'Jake is a great leading man to work with - he's wonderful to work with because he makes himself vulnerable. For a strong young guy like that, not many of his American counterparts are vulnerable. They don't dare to be vulnerable because they think vulnerable is weak. It is not - to be vulnerable is to be very strong.'

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

But you are right, we said that PoP looks like a bad idea from the very start.

Anonymous said...

Let's be optimistic and say that LAOD and Source Code will fix this, like The Peacemaker fixed Clooney's Batman.

Anonymous said...

That would put the Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer movie in the $58 million range after two weekends in release. SATC 2 also earned some $4 million Friday night, down 67% from last Friday and on track to gross a bit over $12 million for the frame for a total cume of $73 million.

SATC 2 studio was smart enough to release the movie on Thursday, May 27.

SATC2 isn't doing well overseas - only a measly 27M to date. Apparently ugly American doesn't fly with the rest of the world. Who'd have thunk it. PoP is doing much better overseas.

For the first time, the percentage of Americans who perceive “gay and lesbian relations” as morally acceptable has crossed the 50 percent mark.
Also for the first time, the percentage of men who hold that view is greater than the percentage of women who do.

[T]he fastest-growing group along the sexuality continuum are men who self-identify as “mostly straight” as opposed to labels like “straight,” “gay” or “bisexual.” They <b>acknowledge some level of attraction to other men even as they say that they probably wouldn’t act on it, but ... the right guy, the right day, a few beers and who knows.</b>

LoL Jake being so much into music and hanging out with musicians...makes me wonder if his dream was to be in a band but he had to settle for acting gigs instead.

The Trouble with Sex and the City's Gay Wedding said...

It was a focal point of the Sex and the City 2 trailer and it opened the movie in style: As Charlotte pointed out, her best gay friend (Anthony) and Carrie’s best gay friend (Stanford) were getting married. (Best gay friends are apparently still the hottest accessory this season).

What may seem like a minor plot point to establish the tone of the movie and bring all of the important straight characters together, is actually a big deal — a really big deal. In the battle for LGBT civil rights, there is one irrefutable fact — people are more likely to support equality after they have been exposed to LGBT people. Of course it works best when a personal connection is made via friend or family, but for those who don’t have LGBT people in their lives, the media they consume will help to form many of their opinions. Which means that the Sex and the City gay wedding instantly became a monumental opportunity to show millions of voters why gay and lesbian couples deserve the freedom to marry.

I am devastated to report that they failed miserably.

Now before you all string me up with a vintage Dior noose, please let me clarify that I consider myself a devoted Sex and the City fan boy, which makes this all the more disappointing.

**** click link if you want to read major spoilers, stop reading if you want to avoid gay wedding spoilers ****

I was heartbroken — I looked across the Orange County movie theater I was in and I looked at the sea of people who will probably be asked at least one more time to vote on whether or not gay and lesbian couples should have the right to marry. They were just delivered a message that said one groom was so consumed with desire to throw an extravagant party that he didn’t mind that the other groom couldn’t wait to get the ceremony over with so he could go hook up with someone else. Suddenly the voice of every anti-gay activist was inside my head screaming “sanctity of marriage.”

I get it. I understand how the cheating deal was meant to help inform the larger movie theme of taking tradition, putting your own stamp on it and making your own rules. In true SATC style, everything is woven together nicely, but I think they could have achieved story cohesion without perpetuating stereotypes of gay promiscuity.

A significant part of my frustration is rooted in the fact that the two creative minds behind this movie are people I deeply respect and admire. Openly gay writer/director Michael Patrick King and super gay ally Sarah Jessica Parker both have gay IQs that are off the charts, so I have absolutely no idea what they were thinking here. Let me be clear that I am not questioning the commitment to equality for anyone in the SATC family, as the cast is fervent in their support in this Towleroad interview. I am simply saddened by the direction of the highly touted wedding.

To be fair, there are other aspects that were handled beautifully. Anthony gives a very nice speech, Stanford’s parents walk him down the aisle and his father refers to Anthony as his son’s husband. Other elements of the story are also very gay and very well done, but I can’t help but be left with the icky feeling that the most visible same-sex wedding ever left audiences thinking about Anthony’s desire to cheat instead of Anthony’s desire to love his husband.

I know people are "poor jake” about PoP, but internationally this is doing well and that is very powerful for him. It will help him with other movies in the long run.

I looked at a list of movies coming out the next few weeks and Toy Story and the A-team (loved the show) are the only things I want to see. PoP could last a while and make money for weeks.

Anonymous said...

^^Yes. I saw the previews for A-Team and I loved it! I've always loved the way Mr T says Fool! :)

Anonymous said...

Pop is doing well in Europe but is that because of Jake or because it is a British film, with a British director and cast.

Anonymous said...

I don't think having a British director and cast would mean anything to the rest of Europe.

Anonymous said...

^^or to the Far East and Latin America.

Anonymous said...

As hard as it may be to fathom, maybe the rest of the world likes the film and Jake's performance? They obviously don't like SATC.

Anonymous said...

And don't say that it was way back then, I did a seaech using "way back" and all I could find was a site called A-list gossip and it was last updated 2003, they had a lot of gay gossip gleamed from other sources and Jake never appeared on it.

But why would he? He was barely starting out. Gay gossip doesn't necessarily hit the minute a star is born.

To all those dissing the DL gays, it's interesting that you still follow the gossip over there. Eh. Say no more.

Also, of course there's a ton of crap over there, it's gossip, don't like don't read. But how are they any better or worse than the sanctioned fake gossip that ends up in heterosexual-orientated magazines or columns, that is equally unproveable? You know, the stuff you gals take for granted because it's 'in print' Eh again.

As for those on here criticizing 'Jaustinites' or whatever you call them, nobody holds a gun to your head to come here. If it's such mush to you, go find somewhere to discuss heterosexual Jake and Austin. I have no problem with healthy debate but to be coming voluntarily to a gay gossip site with an angle on Jake and Austin, and continuously running everyone down on a site that was meant for this gossip, whether you agree or not, seems a tad sad really. If it's not for you, don't come here? Find something that does suit your palette.

"The Prince of Persia is a disaster and Jake may never recover his status as an up and coming star."

Jake isn't a star, he is an actor which is completely different. his career will do well cause serious directors know what he is able to do.

Orlando bloom was a star, he played in successful blockbusters right? he was promised to be the futur big "up and coming star", where he is now? nowhere, the guy fell. he was a star for sure but certainly not an actor and soon or later you end up loosing credibility to the productors.

Anonymous said...

I think if Pop has so-called production problems, they are no worse than what I have seen in other movies.

SATC's story sounds like it's nonexistent.

Four women who have it all whining and complaining. One's married to the man of her dreams and has all she has ever wanted, but she still isn't happy. One has always wanted to be a mother and when she has the children she's always wanted, she complains about it and complains about the nanny. Then they send them off, inexplicably, to for a trip to Abu Dhabi, where they oversimplify the repression of Muslim women to only be about sexual matters. Not problems that an ordinary woman can relate to, and only the most shallow and not socially aware would even aspire to. One of Samantha's outfits with the spike shoulder pads looked like she took a wrong turn and was auditioning for a role as one of the Hassansins, or a roller derby tryout.

By the sounds of that Queerty article, it looks like they even messed up the gay wedding, which was probably the only redeeming feature it had.

I haven't seen it because I wasn't crazy about what I saw in some of the trailers, and after reading the absolutely abyssmal reviews to confirm my suspicions. It does seem to have a few funny moments tho. I'll wait till it comes out on video.

Anonymous said...

I probably wouldn't have believed that I'd be interested in a move like the A-Team, but the trailer looked great. I have always loved the character of B.A. Baracas, but was meh about the TV show. Loved George Peppard in it tho. The character of Murdock is even hotter in this film than he was in the TV series, looks like. The film seems to go the TV show one better

DiCaprio is incredibly lucky in his choice of movies since "hooking up" with Scrosese. This year he had the successful SI and from what I've read Inception is already getting good buzz. He may not be a talent like Depp, DDL, Sean Penn or Gosling etc. but he's decent and people go watch his films that happen to be mostly good films (luckily for him).

Anonymous said...

For instance, Heath was a great, versatile actor who unfortunately starred in many mediocre to bad films. You also have to have luck (like DiCaprio for instance).

Anonymous said...

DiCaprio is also a schmoozer and plays the game, Heath didn't.

Me, too :) And coming from Russell Crowe, who isn't known for being a gushy sentimental type, it's an especially sweet sentiment. Heath had such a profound effect on everyone who knew him.

Anonymous said...

See? Crowe tweets about the pain of losing Heath. As the poster above said, he isn't the type of showing up his sentiments in public very much and he certainly isn't a fame-seeker. Yet, he lets himself being honest about his feelings and talk about it in a respectful way.

Why Jake couldn't even to acomplish a formal tribute at the time of Heath's passing (as all Heath's co-workers did)remains a mistery to me, no matter if some posters here think the issue is over just because he said a couple of gushy sentences during promo of his movie

There's a very long wedding announcement for Jane Lynch in the NY Times today.

It was a long-distance courtship, and it sounds like the marriage will also be a long-distant relationship. Her wife lives and works in Florida along with her daughter from another relationship. Lynch of course has to live and work where Glee is filmed (not sure where that is). No mention of Lynch living in Florida as well, when not working.

I guess they didn't get the memo from WFT2 about how that couldn't possibly be a real relationship.

Anonymous said...

Many couples have long-distance relationships, but Jane Lynch and her wife have a real relationship because it is open and honest and not hidden from the world. An out and proud actor such as Jane Lynch is in no way comparable to any deeply closeted actor who uses beards.

Anonymous said...

Jake answered that 'mystery' and his answer makes a lot of sense to me.

Okay, but Jake wouldn't have had to go into anything personal. It's his prerogative, of course, but I still think it would've been better if he had released a statement at the right time. The whole thing turned into a much bigger issue than it should have been.

In spite of what he said in American Way, Jake will be asked about Heath again, especially during LAOD promo IMO. We'll see if he talks about it or if he pulls an 'Elle'.

Anonymous said...

Many couples have long-distance relationships

True, and most of them are together when they have a chance to be together. That doesn't seem to be the case with Jake and Austin.

Anonymous said...

Crowe has a movie to promote. Why do you think his Heath comment is anything but pr? If Jake says the word “Health” people would say he is using Heath. People, please.

Yes. And, more importantly, whether they are "together" or not, Jake and Austin are closeted gay men. Jane Lynch and her wife are out so the comparison is moot in many ways.

Anonymous said...

Russell Crowe and PR? LMAO!

:) Yeah, that is pretty funny. Did you see that one interview he did several weeks ago when he actually was trying to promote Robin Hood? He really made the reporter squirm with his, err, bluntness, lol. Russell Crowe does not play the game and suck up to the media. Heath didn't either and that's probably one of the many reasons he loved Heath.

Anonymous said...

Jane Lynch and her wife have a small kid together?

No, the child is from another relationship.

Anonymous said...

So, the people who released a statement at the right time did it for publicity, even Heath's family?

No. Form doesn't matter, substance matters. All statements of the world are less important than someone's true feelings of love and loss.

Anonymous said...

And it didn't say whether the kid was "small", it just said a daughter from another relationship.

Anonymous said...

Robin Hood has had it's day, I doubt that a few words from Russell about Heath could be construed as promoting it.

What does that have to do with the amount of time spent together?

Jake has been in LA since at least last Saturday. In 8 days he was seen out to breakfast/coffee twice (that would probably take 90 minutes tops), grocery shopping (hour tops), a concert (3-4 hours) and once working out on his own (2 hours tops).

That is about 10 hours out of 182 hours. Woooo, that means he has 172 hours for Austin, that's just enough for relationship damn it.

It is hilarious and absurd and not at all supported by his behavior in all the interviews. Remember when they did that one awful press conference (I think in France, not sure) and everyone else was trying to be polite and charming to the stupid questions, especially about two guys kissing and Heath simply said, "I have nothing funny to say." Good for him. And that's the simple truth - it's not "sanctifying" him. Jake himself said that Heath was one of the few actors who didn't put on an "act" in public.

Disney does not spend that much money making and then promoting the hell out of a movie just for it to be "not bad" at the box office. And to keep comparing it to SATC2 just sounds desperate. SATC2 is a piece of crap that got scathing reviews, and besides that it is geared to a different audience. There is no way Disney and Bruckheimer aren't disappointed.

Nobody's comparing, I just find it comical.

PoP will not make more than 350-380 mil world wide from tickets. While OS gross is significantly bigger, some countries impose large taxes on US movies to protect their home market that's why domestic gross was so important for Disney.

Anonymous said...

There is no way Disney and Bruckheimer aren't disappointed.

Of course they are disappointed. With a production budget of $200 mil + promotion of $100 mil, these are hardly impressive numbers. Disney will get their money back and that's about all.

Jake was paid to make a movie, that's it, he's not Will Smith. And even stars like Will Smith get % from the PROFIT, ergo make more money only if movie makes profit.

Anonymous said...

Ok, then just let's be happy that Disney will get enough money and Jake won't have to mop the floors of the studio to pay them back.

It's absurd to spend so much money to make a picture, anyway.

Films like BBM and LAOD usually recieve nice critics and make good profits without having to shit a brik when the movie is not number 1 for a whole fucking month.

You'll have to patient, PoP needs to make $600M to cover the costs.

Anonymous said...

$600M!!!????? ....oy!

imdb comment said...

OP, you should know that the studio doesn't get all the money from the screenings. It has distribution agreement with theaters, which usually take half the money grossed, sometimes even more, depends. So in order to cover their 200 mil of expenses, the movie should earn at least 400 mil just to cover them, not talking about a profit, which is the real reason for making films in Hollywood.
So after theatrical run, sells of DVD/Bluray, merchandising and TV rights, I see little profit, if any at all. So considering the initial intentions and the target gross, this movie is very disappointing. The studio will cover the expenses, but it will loose on the long run because the people behind the studio, the insurance and the shareholders, will not see much profit from it.

Yes, studio gets 50-60% from the gross amount reported as box office.

Why is the key discussion so important? I'm more interested in why Jake was out two nights in a row at a concert, his new BFF Marcus Mumford, his hanging at Teddy's after the second gig and hanging at Chateau Marmont for hours yesterday, all without hubby and child.

Being a PR machine during a movie promo is part of the job. Like it or not the actors have to suck up and just frigging do it.

Why is Jake visiting San Francisco?

"If Jake made 10 million and 10 % (off the top) he has made over 30 million (at least) for himself. He isn’t crying himself to sleep.

Jake was paid to make a movie, that's it, he's not Will Smith. And even stars like Will Smith get % from the PROFIT, ergo make more money only if movie makes profit."

——Not true!

Most actors, for big movies, make deals where they get a % of the money. No one waits for profits. Only people who know nothing wait for profits (movies “never” profit - ie Avatar). Yes, I know people who work the money in the entertainment field. The numbers the company presents to the public are all lies. Anyone who gets a percentage from the movie gets the % of the grosses.

Do your homework.

Did you know that in John Travolta’s deal for Saturday Night fever he got a dollar for every movie ablum sold?

Not comparing, just pointing out the double standard if the original poster's answer is no.

Anonymous said...

it's telling that he spends a lot of time hanging out outside of home.

Nah. It might seem like a lot to us but like the "10 hours" poster above said, it isn't. You figure the average person as well as Jake has three meals a day, one workout a day, errands once a day. We saw pics of Jake from one meal (breakfast), two workouts, two errands, 1 concert - all in a span of a week. Considering that there were 21 meals, 7 workouts and 7 errands and at least 2 opportunities a day of entertainment activities which equals 14 (this is just an average rough estimate of a person's day, people!) - a total of 49 potential sightings - 6 is NOT a lot of time spent hanging out outside of the home.

The percents may not be as big as it used to be but they almost all have backend deals in place. Some actors take more money upfront and some take it from grosses.

Julia Roberts got a % of Valentine’s Day crapfest. That’s how you get names.

This article says what we both said:
http://showbizmanagementadvisors.com/Top%20Movie%20Star%20Compensation.htm

Disney only needs to recoup some of its money before the backend deal kicks in. No one is going to go broke on this movie.

The studios seem determined to all but kill off these rich deals, especially on big-budget films (where the risk to the studio is highest). “If a budget is over $100 million, they don’t want to give dollar-one gross to anybody,” says a leading agent.

I don't know. Bruckheimer and Disney were hoping PoP will be the next PotC. Let's look at the numbers, shall we?

1) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - Production Budget: $140 million

Domestic: $305,413,918
+ Foreign: $348,850,097
= Worldwide: $654,264,015

2) Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) - Production Budget: $225 million

Domestic: $423,315,812
+ Foreign: $642,863,913
= Worldwide: $1,066,179,725

3) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) - Production Budget: $300 million

Domestic: $309,420,425
+ Foreign: $651,576,067
= Worldwide: $960,996,492

Disney will be lucky if PoP makes $400 mil...

Anonymous said...

You are missing the point re POP box office. Its not just the haul though that counts for a lot given the state of finances. Fans flocked to Pirates of the Caribbean because they could not get enough of the Captain Jack that Depp created. The Prince however turned out to be just a character in a film. Not iconic. That much has to be blamed on Jake.

Is that how Jake (and possibly Austin who's been known to ride scooters so motorcycles wouldn't be out of the question) gets around unnoticed? If he does, ugh. I don't like donorcycles.

It's a fucking stupid idea to choose an indie actor, no matter how good looking he is, to carry a movie that cost 200 million to make. (Dumb) heads will roll for this, that's for sure.

Johnny Depp was a huge part of POTC success, no doubt about it. He has the "it" factor, star power, whatever you want to call it. And it's not just because he puts on make-up and outlandish outfits, etc. for certain roles (although he does that well). It was a rainy afternoon and I watched one of my favorite movies again,"Chocolat" with Depp, Juliette Binoche and also Alfred Molina :) Depp doesn't have the largest part in the movie, and it's a very 'quiet' sort of role at that - but man oh man when he is on the screen everyone else sort of moves to the background because of his presence.

Anonymous said...

Caught in the Act!

After a whirlwind week promoting his new movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Jake Gyllenhaal was in the mood to kick back. The actor started his weekend with a big night out at L.A.'s Trousdale Lounge, where he sat in the back room sipping vodka along with a large group of friends. Later, he was spotted at Lamill Coffee Boutique in Silver Lake twice – first for a steak and eggs brunch with a couple and their little girl, then again for a Memorial Day breakfast after riding his motorcycle. During the brunch, the actor "seemed to enjoy playing with the couple's daughter," an onlooker says.

Chris Pine headed to new Hollywood hotspot The Colony with a posse of guys. The actor arrived at 1 a.m. and headed immediately for an outdoor bar near the entrance, ordering drinks and clinking glasses together. Dressed down in a sweater, jeans and newsboy cap, nobody recognized Pine or bothered him all night long. Though he was definitely having a guys' night out, the actor did chat up two girls, but then moved inside to watch Cypress Hill perform.
