Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Mike Newell:

'I’d known Jake for a long time because I’d known his parents and worked with his sister, but I’d never worked with him. His face is his fortune. He looks like he has one layer of skin fewer than anyone else; he’s tender and vulnerable in a way that a lot of people aren’t. But then he made himself into an action hero. I saw him do it, step by step. Of course the stunt man is there, because of insurance, but Jake did all his own riding, his own fighting, his own gymnastics. It’s something that you don’t see until you look at the whole movie and think: Christ, he actually did that. On the one hand he gave what I expected him to give, which is the sensitive actor stuff. But on the other, he really worked hard.'

Sir Ben Kingsley:

'Jake is a great leading man to work with - he's wonderful to work with because he makes himself vulnerable. For a strong young guy like that, not many of his American counterparts are vulnerable. They don't dare to be vulnerable because they think vulnerable is weak. It is not - to be vulnerable is to be very strong.'

No, she's just dissing Jake.

Tweets are not everything, probably come from Jake fans.

Reviews do not matter much with movies like this. The last Transformers movie was ripped to shreds, yet it was a massive hit.

Sandals and sand movies are always risky.

Do you suppose Jake would be getting hit so hard if not for his phonyspoon years?

If I were Jake I would put the dough in a deposit and live from interest and marginally from writing screenplays.
Making movies is not worth the bother. Be lazy.

Most kids are in school so they can’t go to PoP until their school day is over (and not to late movies). Many women can go during the day or go after work (as late as they want).

Anonymous said...

That is not the point - the point is that Jake, Austin and Sophia weren't interesting enough to get separate Awful Truth post.

Oh, well I can't argue with that. Jake posts don't garner nearly as many comments as Toothy posts or Toothy/Grey Goose posts.

There is a website for unclaimed $$ in new york state. I was bored and there is money for Maggie and Jake. they should look into it.

My sil and husband saw POP and said it was really good, and "clean." (born again Christians) [*rolls eyes*] Lol so whatever that means about POP and Jake, idk.

Can't help thinking there's a dig or two at Jake in there.

Why would he dig at him? I think Ryan likes Jake and is appreciative that Jake was nice to his kids during Reeke years. It's not like Ryan wanted Jake's girlfriend for himself. He also knows Jake did him a favor by reducing the window for "oh poor jilted Reese" moaning from middle America.

Ryan's a player but he paid dues for it being married to her, so I have sympathy for him. Plus he'll never be A-list, is cool with getting it on with guys, and Lainey hates him. What's not to like?

Tweets about Jake in PoP are very positive.

You need to distinguish between tweets by a small number of people, probably Jake fans (of which mainly positive ones are posted here, not the negatives), and bums on seats paying cold cash. Studios care about the latter. Forking over $ is the real vote.

Anonymous said...

If you read through all the tweets and FB postings about PoP you'll find that more than half are new Jake fans since seeing the movie. That's pretty impressive and good WoM.

Anonymous said...

Word of mouth on the Jake sites is positive but not on gamer or non Jake sites.

Keep egging Ted on. Its when he gets pissed off that he pulls no punches.

11:45.. Hope that Jake's PR were paying you for doing that research. If not, maybe its time to look into getting some more interesting hobbies - we'll see what happens over the weekend but maybe all the positive tweets etc will show is that people who tweet are basically tweeting to themselves. Good WOM comes from people actually talking to each other.

LOL. I was impressed with this interview. If you read it in it's entirety, he comes across as articulate, thoughtful and intelligent. Frankly, if you compare the way he comes across in interviews with his ex-wife, he certainly seems to have more depth and way less phoniness.

Jake can write screenplays? Somehow I think he should stick to his day job.

It's always annoying how people think anyone can write a screenplay. That's one of the reasons writers get treated like crap in Hollywood.

Isabel Lucas: Jake Gyllenhaal Is Just A Friend! said...

Isabel Lucas signs onto her laptop while waiting for her car outside a New York City hotel on Wednesday (June 2).

The 25-year-old Transformers actress was asked about her rumored relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. “We’re just friends!” Isabel responded. “Our relationship is purely platonic.”

Isabel is headed to Montreal to resume production on her new movie, Immortals, which also stars Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto, Kellan Lutz and Henry Cavill.

ITA. And I would add that just because his mom is a screenwriter doesn't mean Jake wants to be one or would be good at it. It takes a lot of skill and hard work to write a good screenplay - I don't get how it is considered lazy. Also, screenwriters are basically anonymous and it's pretty obvious that Jake has no interest in being anonymous. Quite the opposite, in fact :)

I would think writing or adapting the screenplay is the most important thing about a film. :(

Bitch-Back! Is Jake the New Indiana Jones?

Dear Ted:
I really had no idea who Jake Gyllenhaal was until I started reading your blolumn. So, in a way, it's totally your fault I went to see Prince of Persia...and I don't regret it. Jake turned in a standout performance. That this $200 million film could not have bought a better script, better direction, a decent score and a better leading lady (could there have been less chemistry between Jake and Gemma Arterton?) is what is truly disappointing. Jake evoked a young Harrison Ford, but not even that adventure star could have pulled off this muddled video-game adaptation. So yeah, regarding your Morning Piss, PoP kinda blows, but not because of Jake.
—M

Dear Action Jake!
Sorta disagree, babe. Think you've got to put some of the blame on the leading hunk. Sure, he looked good (minus the awful wig), but chemistry is a two-person deal, and Jake's acting was dull, dull, dull. He's better at comedy or emotional stuff, not mindless fluff—and that's a compliment.

Dear Ted:
There are pictures of George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis on a motorcycle. Hasn't he dumped her yet? What is going on? Is he getting serious with her? Do you know something we don't know? Please, enlighten us.
—Pat

Dear Hop On:
So now every time I hop on a motorcycle (which is, uh, rarely), I have to be worried that I'm going to be engaged to that dude? No, Pat, the two are having fun. Which is what George does best.

Dear Ted:
Don't people like Toothy Tile have enough money to retire, raise their child and be authentic. Does he need the attention? Truth be told, T.T. has a better chance at being celebrated being who he is than with his current plan!
—E

Dear More Money, More Problems:
It's not about the money, doll. Sure, Toothy's got plenty of dough, but he loves to act. And he thinks he won't be able to do the same work if everyone knows he's into guys.

Can 'Shrek' Three-peat? Box Office Preview: June 4-6

Call him the Little Ogre That Could. 'Shrek Forever After' may have opened with disappointing numbers compared to the first three 'Shrek'-taculars, but given the motley competition this week -- four varied new movies that will divide up the audience pie -- the latest 'Shrek' should have no trouble remaining the box office leader for the third straight week.

A drop in fortunes of just under 50 percent from last week would still mean a take this weekend of $22 to $26 million, more than enough to beat the four newcomers ('Get Him to the Greek,' 'Killers,' 'Marmaduke,' and 'Splice'), as well as holdovers 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' and 'Sex and the City 2.' That would take the toon's three-week total to about $180 million, putting it in a class with only 'Iron Man 2' among the summer's biggest blockbusters so far.

'Greek' will likely open in second place. The 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' spinoff, opening in the same slot that proved a surprise success for 'The Hangover' last year, seems to be aiming at the same young-adult male audience that likes raunchy comedy. Neither Jonah Hill nor Russell Brand is a big enough movie star to guarantee a big opening weekend, but neither was anyone in 'Hangover.' Opening on 2,696 screens, 'Greek' should gross between $17 and $20 million.

'Killers' ought to be a good date movie, with a blend of romantic comedy for the gals and spy-thriller action for the guys. Unfortunately, that's the same formula that failed earlier this year for 'The Bounty Hunter,' and this one has Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher instead of Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. Plus, the fact that it wasn't screened for critics doesn't bode well. Debuting on 2,859 screens, 'Killers' should open in third place with between $14 and $18 million.

'Marmaduke' will be duking it out for fourth place with 'Persia' and 'Sex.' Owen Wilson + dogs was a formula for success for 'Marley & Me,' but this adaptation of the long-running comic strip hasn't been getting great buzz. Still, aside from 'Shrek,' 'Marmaduke' is the only other all-ages family movie out there, and it's this week's widest opener (3,213 screens). It should earn $13 to $15 million.

That's about the same range where 'Persia' and 'Sex' should land. The two movies, which opened neck-and-neck last week, are both expected to drop about 60 percent from last week due to poor word of mouth. They'll have another photo finish this weekend near the $14 million mark.

The fourth new movie this weekend, 'Splice,' looks like a cult sci-fi horror hit in the making. It doesn't have big stars or the widest opening (2,450 screens), but it does have strong reviews, good audience buzz from Sundance, top-quality actors (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley), a well-regarded genre director ('Cube's' Vincenzo Natali) and the fanboy stamp of approval in the form of a producer credit for Guillermo del Toro. It'll open at No. 7 with about $11 or $12 million toward a total of $30 to $35 million. Not too shabby for a low-budget indie horror flick.

Brokeback Mountain
This is probably the one everyone will agree with me most on. Ang Lee’s masterpiece is told gorgeously with minimal dialogue. Had Heath won for Best Actor, it would have been for a performance with minimal dialogue. Rarely has there been a love story this beautiful and timeless. The ending of the film is told with few words. One of the most powerful closing scenes I’ve ever seen in film is when Ennis Del Mar finds his old blood-stained shirt that’s tucked together with Jack’s blood-stained. If you haven’t yet seen this film, challenge yourself and do so.

When Jake isn't being papped with Austin he can relax because he doesn't have to worry about looking like a couple instead of friends.

Jake looked like he was supressing a smile in some of the weekend pictures. Plus there's the tongue.

How would Jake and Austin look like a couple walking out of the gym? Holding hands? Kissing?

There's lots of possible reasons for that photo op and they don't necessarily exclude each other - but to me it looks funny that Sophia has to tag along when her 'boyfriend' goes to work out with his buddy. Makes her look like one of those insecure 'girlfriends' who don't want their guy to do anything without them, lol.

Anonymous said...

I still don't understand what was the point of that photo op, what was the PR message and why Jake, Austin and Sophia looked like they didn't want to be there.

Anonymous said...

I don't think they looked like they didn't want to be there. More like they were trying to be blase, and probably tired and sweaty from working out, so not exactly looking their best.

Maybe Jake wanted to be seen with Austin, but Austin doesn't want to be seen as gay and asked the beard along. Because, you know, if he's gay he might end up on a good show like White Collar instead of that crap that passes for a show, OTH. ;)

Go ahead, knock yourself out. You can stir all you want, but people who think Jake and Austin are still together are not going to change their minds just because you see something different in the photos than they do.

No, the point is that they tried to make it look like Jake drove off by himself, and that ergo Sophin left together in another car. If they're all just friends there is no reason not to show them all getting in the car together.

It's the fact that Jake engages in these elaborate maneuvers that raises question.

Have you actually ever been in a relationship with someone? I kind of doubt it from that statement. You don't "need" two sets of keys when you're together, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find couples that don't both carry their keys when they leave the house. Most people are in the habit of picking up their keys and taking them with them when they leave the house.

There are so many variables here, there's no way at all to know for sure who came with whom, how many sets of keys or remote keyless entry, whose car, etc. etc., whether or not they are in the habit of bringing all their keys with them when the go out.

My partner and I are a unit, one set of keys is enough if we are going out together. Another myth debunked!

I don't see the distinction between carrying and taking out keys, but what the heck, even if there is, why the keys? What was he going to do with them?

And if Jake was popping his remote for everyone then there certainly would be no need for Austin to be carrying keys.

By the way, since you know so much about remotes, I'm sure you know that they can be used to unlock all the doors, not just the front doors of the car, so your point about not seeing Austin manually unlock the door for Sophia is meaningless.

You really don't get it, do you? You said Jake didn't unlock the car so since Sophia doesn't have the keys she shouldn't be able to open the door without Austin's help. But she does. Even if Austin unlocked his own door, how could Sophia open hers by herself if Jake hadn't unlocked it first?

It's entirely possible that Jake and Austin are a couple. But I'm not going to infer all kinds of things from a few pictures, which are my own impressions, and believe that it is real, and then argue with other people about their impressions, which they feel the same way about. I saw J&A together in pictures, that's all I'm taking from it. Anything else is just speculation, which is fine, but it's not the absolute truth.

It takes untold numbers of brain synapses to face reality and not put on a dumb smile.

Actually, the fact that Austin has keys in his hand works against the belief that J/A are a couple (or at least a live-together couple). He has his own set of house/car keys for when he gets dropped off either at his own car or at home.

Sigh. Why do you view anyone who just uses logic as some kind of enemy? I'm not anti-J&A and I'm not clutching my pearls over anything. I don't have a set opinion on what their relationship is currently. I do believe they had a relationship at one point. I don't know what goes on between them now. It's clear they're good friends, maybe they are more, but I don't know. I'm not bothered by the idea of them being a couple, it's a nice idea - but being a nice idea doesn't make it true. I'm not going to throw logic and common sense out the window just to support the theory of a nice idea. If you weren't so defensive about it, you would be able to see things more clearly.

And again, if it not something to be impressed by, and nobody cares that they all drove their together, why is Jake standing there by the gym doors while you can see Sophia and Austin getting into the car in the reflection, and why do we only get pictures of Jake in the car?

And don't tell me it's because the pap didn't care about the other two. The paps have always taken pictures of whoever else was in Jake's car, like the nameless guy after the Crazy Hearts party, or they have come out with shots showing that Jake was clearly the only person in the car, and not cropped so you just see the driver.

If not for the reflections, it would look as if Sophia and Austin dashed off to their car, leaving Jake to be seen alone in dozens of other photos.

I don't know if I'd call Sophia a beard. She's obviously a mutual friend of theirs. It isn't like it's the first time all three have ever been photographed together.

Jaustinites are pretending that Sophia wasn't there.

Mobile, keys and water bottle.

That and a couple of other things, check out 12:57 PM pic.

He took his keys out, just so he'd be ready to get into his own car, but then he had to do something with them again when he got in the car.

I don't understand what point you're trying to make. He took his keys "out" from where? The same place from where he took his phone "out"? He didn't take anything OUT from anywhere - he's just carrying them in his hand. Where would you expect his phone and his keys to be? He's not carrying a duffel bag or a backpack. And I imagine he put his keys down, along with his phone and his water bottle, when he put his seat belt on. There is nothing unusual about any of it.

We have pictures of Jake, Austin and Sophia, we know that they were together. What would pictures of them together in the car mean, what would be different?

Anonymous said...

It's also the fact that Austin had keys out and Austin and Sophia got into the car before Jake walked over to the car. I don't know of anybody who shares car keys with their friends--but couples do.

Very very true.

Anonymous said...

Destiny, look at yesterday's gym pics, exactly the same tight cropping (only the side of the car is visible again) and Jake was alone.

Anonymous said...

2:32 PM - keep forgetting that we don't know what are Austin's keys for? Well, you shouldn't.

Anonymous said...

2:32 PM, you are very, very slow too.

I don't get that, either. I can see that it would be an issue if only Jake and Austin got in one car together and Sophia was seen in the reflection getting into a different car, but that's not the case. They were obviously all together, so what's the big deal with them being in one car. I can't see that it proves or disproves anything.

Anonymous said...

Sophia was also with them in the 2006 beach pictures. There is no difference that she is in this set. It’s not the first time they take a beard out with them.

The point of not showing they were in the same car is to create the illusion that Austin left with Sophia as a couple in a different car. This is what most of us believed was the point of this photo op when we first saw the pics, until somebody with a good eye pointed out they were all together in the same car.

There is no need to create the illusion that Austin left with Sophia, there are pictures enough of them together, Austin is doing photo ops with Sophia.

Plus Sophia talked about their 4 year 'relationship' five days before this photo op.

I agree one hundred percent.

But obviously Jake, Sophin and PR thinks it would make a difference as they are the ones who tried to create the impression they were not all in the same car.

People with nothing to hide don't play games like this. Only people who are afraid of being caught or outed would go to the trouble to cover up things. This is just one of the things that convince me that J&A are more than friends. Friends wouldn't do this shit.

Or paparazzi concentrated on the movie star Jake Gyllenhaal.

Sorry, but you aren't making any sense. There was no covering up because we have pictures, and three friends driving in the same car is not newsworthy.

They don't actually show Jake in the car in the photos from yesterday.

We also have no way of knowing whether anyone was with him yesterday.

Online version of the interview: American Way

That innocent query sparked a chain of questions I hadn’t expected to ask. “I live next door to … ,” Jake said, naming a certain famous artist. That triggered talk about that artist and about Andy Warhol and Henry Fonda, and though I was enjoying the conversation, I knew my plan to ask a set number of questions (32 to be exact) was shot. Gone were the questions about his working with Tobey Maguire in Brothers, about whether he ever used cooking to impress a date, about his charity work. Gone, all gone. We had only another 10 minutes, and there were some things I needed to talk to him about. For starters, Jake has rarely talked publicly about Heath Ledger’s death. I wasn’t sure if I’d get anything out of him, but I had to ask.

“A year ago, Entertainment Weekly spoke to a lot of people for a piece about Heath Ledger. The screenwriter, producer and cinematographer of Brokeback Mountain all talked. You were conspicuously absent. Are you uncomfortable remembering him in public?”

“Yes,” he said, pausing. “Brokeback was painful. Any time you go into pain, I don’t think you necessarily want to go back. But the results of that film, and how the public responded to it so hugely, were worth it. Walking through any kind of pain is usually worth it. As close as we all became making that movie, for all those other people, it didn’t extend much farther than [the movie itself], so that experience of work could be easily talked about for publications. The experience Heath and I had was also shared publicly with all the press and publicity we did. But what we shared as friends, though I respect the interest that so many people have in the mourning and grieving process and how it feels to other people, I feel like — and I don’t mean this in an unkind way — but I don’t think it’s anybody’s business but his and mine. So in that sense, to really respect him — and also the way he felt about his life and his private life and what he cared about, because he was a deeply caring and loving human being — every time anybody asks me any question about him, it would be like he was sitting next to me, and I know he would roll his eyes, because that’s the way he was. It was between us.”

If we didn’t talk about anything else, I knew I had something of consequence. And I was confident that what Jake had just said was as far and as deep and as sincere as he could go with this — you could feel the anguish in his words. So I moved on.

I had the same thought destiny. Maybe he wasn't alone in this set yesterday.

At least now we know Jake didn't talk about Heath in GQ to get publicity for PoP like some suggested.

It was. And I'm not saying they were anything more than friends, but I couldn't help but notice:

I'd say it depends on whether the BI about Heath and the Canadian rentboy is true. If it is then Heath was into same-sex sex as well and if he was you know he and Jake screwed around.

“In high school I watched my sister on stage in South Pacific and knew I wanted to do that. It looked like so much fun. But there are still times to this day where I feel like there are other things in my heart that I’d like to do.”

“Like what?”

“My heart has told me to go and take care of other people more so than always focusing on movies. I’d also like to direct movies. I don’t want to be presumptuous at my age, but I feel I’m getting enough information that as I get older and get enough confidence that I can not only be a part of storytelling but that I can also be a storyteller. That’s what we all love: the story.”

“Who else among your peers would you really like to work with?” I wondered.

“Ryan Gosling,” he said. “He’s incredibly talented. He’s my age, and I really respect him.”

On the day of the interview, I arrived at the Disney building 10 minutes early, and Jake came 10 minutes late. During the 20 minutes I waited, I dealt with two different publicists who went over the guidelines of the interview. Jake was escorted by yet another handler when he finally appeared. Before we sat down, I offhandedly asked him if he lived in the same canyon where I lived, as I’d heard he had. He answered yes.

That innocent query sparked a chain of questions I hadn’t expected to ask. “I live next door to … ,” Jake said, naming a certain famous artist.
