.002 percent

Director Todd Holland on gay actors coming out.

"I’m an out gay director and producer.

Coming out is the single most important event in my life. I came out in 1992 while directing and producing on "The Larry Sanders Show." I was scared, sure. But I did it -- because I needed to live authentically.

My parents were slow to come around. Being Republicans and big-time Christians, they love me, I know. But I think they still have a hard time accepting the gay me. That hurts but, hey, that’s the real world.

And for me, living authentically means living in the real world. And maybe that’s how I came to be the anti-queer poster child of the week.

See, I work in this factory called Hollywood. It’s a strange place. (But remember, we make dreams here -- so it’s bound to have a few quirks.) And here are a few of the things I’ve learned.

One: No one cares that I’m gay. Like ... no one.

Two: there are still prominent creative people living in the closet.

No one cares that they’re gay, either. They care -- mostly because they feel incapable of enduring the perceived rejection of their families.

Three: As far as actors go, if you’re a character actor or a woman, no one cares.

Four: If you’re a guy, no one cares ... unless you're in that fractional .002 percent of the young male actor population, and you really have the goods to become a true leading man. Then there may be obstacles to both living authentically and achieving that Holy Grail of dreams: real, tent-pole-sized Hollywood Stardom.

Gatekeepers abound at every level. Studios are like feisty Chihuahuas -- they are inherently fearful, and if their bottom lines are at risk, they’ll bite. Agents and managers do not push rocks up hill -- they’ll push level (but prefer downhill).

And their bottom lines are also at risk. Casting directors (sometimes gay ones especially) are often very reluctant to promote openly gay actors fearing, I imagine, some “what the f--- are you thinking?” response from straight employers.

My damning words were: "If you are that .002 percent ... I can't tell you to come out."

I never said stay in the closet. And that matters. My meaning in "I can't tell you to come out" is inherently parental.

Translation: “If you take the path of coming out, you will be living authentically -- and that is a great achievement in anyone’s life. But I can't promise you're going to skirt the gatekeepers or scale the hurdles the system has in place.”

To me, that is a real and honest answer. Yes, it is neither activist nor idealistic -- but it is the real world I work in every day. It is the world in which I live authentically."

Papa G had the vid of the cat last week and now one with a dog barking. It sure sounds like Atticus. The cat btw is Jake's cat Sophie, the one he got with Kiki around the same time he got Atticus. Sophie even used to go to the dog park and stay in her cat case, remember? And she was in Papa G's book pics.

Anyway the dog barking sounded like Atticus and the cat is definately Sophie, and Papa G is with both of them. Its rare that an older dog and older cat would get along in the same house so my hunch is yes its Sophie and Atticus. Maybe Papa G takes care of them when Jake's away? Or Papa G lives with Jake/whoever (and Jake doesn't live with Reese)? It would make sense that Papa G is in the background helping Jake "hide". Mama G helps Jake beard but you don't see Papa G out and about with Jake and the Chin.

Some of you may not like Papa G but I do. At least he can admit his problems and he seems truthful. With all his past difficulties I would imagine that helping Jake beard is one more deception he can't stomach. On the other hand, Mama G doing pics for the fake romance, no problem.

Jake doesn't live with Reese.

I think Papa G has his own place in West Hollywood. Maybe he's house sitting and looking after Atticus?

If there is one, maybe Papa G and a nanny takes care of BT. Could be that's where BT is set up.

Btw doesn't Reese live in the same gated community as Gov Arnold? I just found out over the weekend that a family friend's son is Gov Arnold's neighbor, lives in the same community in Brentwood (my parents aren't namedroppers which is why they never mentioned it before even to me but then my Mom said something about them going to lunch last week, LOL). Next time I talk to them I'll ask about Reese and if her "bf" Jake live there or if Jake lives there in his own house and ask if they can find out for me. Can't guarantee anything but I'll ask.

"Jake Gyllenhaal - gave Kirsten Dunst a gray and white kitten for her birthday. She named the cat Sophie."

Kiki was really pissed off with Jake, lol.

Gee, Jake sounds like such a great dad, dumping kids of the 2 and 4-legged variety with a nanny and grandpa, in order to run off and pretend to be Ava and Deacon's stepdad.

I don't think there's a BT. If Jake had a kid, I don't think he'd abandon it like some here think he does with BT. I'm a little irritated he doesn't seem to be in touch with his half-orphan goddaughter. But if he had a hidden kid, I'd be beyond pissed and would lose all respet that's left for him. Now, let's say, I HOPE for BT it doesn't exist.

Oh I think Jake once had 1/2 a ball, which could have been enough to produce a kid, but now he is completely without. Sadly I think he would do anything, including harming his own child emotionally, in order to make the A-list.

Ok this is strange. When I saw the Elton pic of Reeke, the one taken in front facing them, I enlarged it (anyone else have Firefox picture zoom?) 400% and it looked like there was a yellow earplug in Jake's left ear. But I figured why would he wear an earplug to a concert LOL, it must be a weird light reflection bouncing off the inside curve of his ear. But now I just saw this pic. He definitely has a yellow earplug in his right ear! Does Elton know Jake wore earplugs to his concert?! Was Jake just clapping his hands and cheering to complete silence?! Everyone thinks Reeke is so lovey-dovey with their faces close together, little do they know it's because the beard has to yell her orders at him so he can hear her! No wonder he had to have Deacon on his shoulders - so his legs would hide the earplugs for the US Reekly pics! LOL!

You still don't get it yet. Jake wanted to maximize his five minute hetero-friendly moment. Deacon be damned. Jake is bearding. He will take advantage of every conceivable opportunity to flaunt his is hetero credentials, and that includes pimping his beards rugs for the cameras. It certainly beats working for a living!

"Some of you may not like Papa G but I do. .... I would imagine that helping Jake beard is one more deception he can't stomach"

ITA.

"He definitely has a yellow earplug in his right ear! "

This is the perfect metaphor. Whenever there's a Reeking episode, someone should say that this is a yellow-plug moment. Jake used earplugs to protect himself from two cultural infections : the gay and his beard's voice.

"Elton understands, he was very, very much in the closet:"

Elton singing "Tiny Dancer" to Reese, LOL. When I heard that I almost wonder if Elton reads WFT and OMG because "tiny" as a PR description of Reese was made fun of relentlessly, and now PR hardly says "tiny" anymore.

Before you argue that it's not possible that other celebs read here or at OMG or other JIG or JIS sites, think of what celebs especially singers like Elton who have no new music, do all day. They sit around with plenty of time on their hands. It ain't 8-5 for them with errands after work. They have mucho time to check sites on themselves and on others and if they have the right computer internet security (which I'm sure they do, like using proxies) it's done anonymously. So Elton, it wouldn't surprise me if he knew all about Jakey and the tiny beard.

I agree that sometimes the kids are with her when she seemed to have arranged something. But not all pap shots with the kids are arranged. Jake often seemed really annoyed when paped with the kids. I don't think he pretended being annoyed at all.

Annoyed probably because they steal his thunder. Bad enough the Chin gets all the attention and the rags still can't spell "Gyllenhaal" right but when the kids are around not only are they identified as Ava and Deacon with thier ages listed but also the name of the kids' father "Ryan Philippe" has to be put in there too!

A new crop of school gardens

While most schools sit like dormant ghost towns during the summer, a few are breaking up the asphalt, planting seeds that will be sprouting edible gardens come September. It may seem counterintuitive to start new programs in this economic climate. Summer school was canceled at many campuses this year, the $1.7-million California Instructional School Garden Program grant to the Los Angeles Unified School District has expired, and the budget crisis has left countless teachers unemployed.

But this groundswell, largely sparked by parent and community interest -- and perhaps some inspiration from Michelle Obama's White House garden -- is finding support in all the right places.
...
It appears that Angelenos from all walks of life are interested in lending a hand to advance the school garden movement, regardless of tough times. The Environmental Media Assn. and Yes to Carrots have partnered with LAUSD to sponsor 10 new school garden projects, one of which will be at Saturn Elementary in L.A.. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal will be their mentor, and architect Rogerio Carvalheiro, who worked on the Getty Villa and Union Station, will work pro bono on the design. Once completed this fall, they hope to add a "scratch kitchen," where children will prepare the food they grow.

The Many, Many Conquests of George Clooney!

George Clooney has been spotted with another "girlfriend" over in Italy. New name (Elisabetta Canalis), but exact same type: brunette, thin, relatively unknown and many years his junior.

We dig the perpetual bachelor schtick as much as everyone else, but we would love to see Georgie mix it up a bit. Sure, there's the occasional blonde or superstar thrown in G.C.'s dating mix, but the silver, dimpled dude likes his girls dark but untainted.

So we're taking a look back at George's former flings and asking the question to you all: Where should he go from here? Ya dig him single and sexy, or should he settle down, already?

Behold! The most notable of his myriad madcap affairs in the Women of George Clooney gallery.

I doubt Elton has time to surf the web, but I bet he does have staff who keep him up to date with public attitude, who to make fun of and how. Either that or PR preselected the song for the "dedication".

SDCC Redux: Disney's Head of Production, Oren Aviv

Last week at Comic-Con, ComingSoon.net was getting all excited to have a chance to talk to director Tim Burton when something happened and that interview fell through. As a consolation, Disney offered us a chance to talk to the studio's Head of Production Oren Aviv, a man so deeply involved in every single movie that the studio greenlights and makes that he seemed like the perfect person to interview as the studio kicked off Comic-Con with the first-ever 3D presentation to take place in Hall H. (You can read our write-up of that presentation as it happened here.)
...
CS: I was kind of surprised that Jerry Bruckheimer wasn't here because I visited the set of "Prince of Persia" and in New York, I got to see some of the stuff they were doing for "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," really amazing stuff. So how come Jerry's not here with those movies? Is he too busy working?
Aviv: No, no, no. We just finished shooting "Sorcerer's" ten days ago. I personally believe and my big bet on that one is that it's one of those titles that nobody's going to be talking about until they actually see something and I think they're going to be blown away. I think it's a big sleeper type movie.

CS: Kind of like "Pirates."
Aviv: Yeah, or even the first "National Treasure" where you're not even clicking into what it is and you may even discount what it is, but at the end of the day, you look at this and go, "I'm in." That and "Prince of Persia" just didn't have the effects done, so to bring stuff that wasn't quite ready, we just all agreed, "Let's wait until we're ready and then when we've got the stuff, let's show it." I think in both cases, I think your instinct is right is my belief, I think this stuff is so cool, but it's unfinished, so we didn't want to risk showing it here or anywhere else until it's ready.

CS: I'm sure at WonderCon there will be a presence.
Aviv: When is that?

CS: WonderCon's in February or March of next year.
Aviv: Yeah, exactly.

Heath Ledger Directed Modest Mouse Clip Due Out Tomorrow

A rumour was going around a little while back that Heath Ledger had directed a music video for a favourite of indie kids everywhere, Modest Mouse. Now, it turns out its true and the video will be released tomorrow.

On the band’s MySpace, they said “the animated video will make its debut exclusively on MySpace Music starting August 4th, the same day the new Modest Mouse EP which includes the ‘King Rat' track, No One’s First, And You’re Next is released”.

Ledger presented the idea to Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse as a way to raise awareness of whaling without saying a word, but he passed away before the video ever came to fruition. So while the video was conceived to the last detail, it was ‘The Masses’ - a film company Ledger was a partner in - that finished off the idea in his honour.

Proceeds from iTunes video downloads in the first month of release will go toward Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization organization committed to ending the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.

Credits for the clip still list Ledger as director, together with:

Daniel Auber - Co-Director
Norris Houk - Lead Animation
Jade Taglioli - Animation
Sara Cline - Producer

Heath Ledger was reportedly in talks for his directorial debut in a chess-themed film to be entitled, The Queen's Gambit - "an adaptation of the novel about an orphan who becomes a chess prodigy".

Now I don’t know about Heath’s chess skills, but all we know (thanks to Haydn Barber, current CAWA president and himself a multiple champion of Western Australia) is that the actor did play junior chess back in the late 1980’s to early 90’s in the U10 and U12 divisions.

Regarding Jake's "affectionate play," I just think he is more inspired by some (Heathy)than others.

He also seemed to develop a dislike for Heath that seemed to be personal. But he seemed to like Jake fine.

Ted didn't trash Heath/Ennis during those BBMt times?

Anonymous said...

BBM became a hit due to straight women seeing it over and over and again.

There is much more straight women than gay men, but a lot of gays adore BBMt, too.

Ang Lee’s BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: The Dangers of Being in Love

Ang Lee’s western melodrama Brokeback Mountain is a film of wide-open spaces, lingering on the majestic mountain scenes in which Ennis (Heath Ledger) and Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal), two cowboys living in Wyoming, fall in love. While such shots evoke the grandeur of open spaces that define the American landscape (especially in Westerns), they also ironically comment upon the insularity of its characters, whose true desires must be kept out of the open.

After Ennis and Jack spend their first night together as lovers, Ennis goes back to his sheep to find one slaughtered by a wolf. It’s a particularly grotesque image – the sheep split down the middle with its red guts half-eaten and spilling out onto the grass – that strongly contrasts an otherwise idyllic scene in the mountains. We then get a reaction shot of Ennis’s face: a steely, stoic gaze that betrays his worry, regret, and fear by the slightest of movements in the corner of his mouth and the furrow of his eyebrows. It’s an especially poignant scene that speaks to the ever-present danger that threatens the love Ennis wants to experience with Jack, one which is repeated in the film through Ennis’s flashback of himself as a child seeing the mutilated body of a murdered homosexual. Ennis and Jack’s love within their place and time is not just forbidden – it is absolutely life-threatening.

And while the conflicting struggle of repression and desire is encompassed by both Ennis and Jack, it is really Ennis that centers the film’s exploration of tragedy. The late Heath Ledger gives maybe his best performance through Ennis, wearing years of psychological repression and self-loathing in his every gesture and expression. While Jack’s blue-eyed naïveté allows him to consider a life together with Ennis on a ranch, Ennis is the one haunted by demons, disallowing him to reciprocate Jack’s romanticism. Ennis’s reservation and self-constraint manifests itself not only in his relationship with Jack, but in his life as well, as he goes from one hired-hand job to the other until he winds up in a trailer, while Jack is able to at least make a good living. Towards the end of the film Ennis blames Jack for having nothing, hating his homosexuality in a way that never allows him to be at peace. Ennis’s tragedy is magnified, then, by Jack’s death, which in his mind affirms the unavoidable punishment for homosexuality (executed by those homophobic wolves that remain invisible), and makes his pain and loneliness that much more acute.

Throughout Lee’s film, the open spaces of the wilderness where Ennis and Jack escape a few times a year are rendered beautifully (by Rodrigo Prieto)– full of gorgeous colors and panoramic views – while the domestic spaces of homes, bars, and offices remain dull, lifeless, and gray. But even within those open spaces in the mountains there lingers dark clouds overhead, threatening to hail or snow suddenly, denying any complete refuge or safety from the rest of the world. In this way, Lee seems to be suggesting that no matter how wonderful Ennis and Jack’s love for each other can be, it will never be whole or complete because there is always an omnipresent danger of being found out. This idea is heartbreakingly repeated in the film sequence of the film in which Ennis brings his and Jack’s shirts to his face – items that retain the full memory of their relationship, but ones which are also stained with blood.

Now is the chance to re-experience this moving and darkly beautiful film on the big screen as part of the Films of Ang Lee series, which is playing at the Walter Reade Theater August 7th, 8th, and 11th. For more information on tickets and showtimes click here.

IMO, It wasn't personal. Heath was campaining hard for his Oscar, his PR was presenting him as a bohemian artist and straight family man.
Ted wrote gossip about him going out with his mates, clubbing and dating a lot and his likes for buzz & pills. Sadly, Ted's vision was the one closer to the truth

Naive Heathen, you are so sweet for this harsh world....

Yes Heathens are all too tender and sentiment-bound for this harsh world. That's why we love them to death.

Pecorini: Heath was extremely relieved he didn't win the Oscar. I saw him the next day and he was like, ''It's a big, bloody weight off my back.'' I said, ''Don't you have even a little regret?'' He said, ''No. It's over! I'm free now!'' If he had won, he would have had to deal even more with this system that wanted to guide his career and his life. He immediately threw himself back into a project that was really important to him: a movie he wanted to make about ['60s British singer] Nick Drake. That was one of his dream projects. The moment the Oscars were over, he said, ''Now we can do the Nick Drake thing.''

Oh yeah, NONE of this HW actors want an uncle Oscar on their shelfs, but when they DO win they go up to the platform making the fuss of their lives!

They are all smiley and thankful on nomination stage, they only act "careless" when the ceremony is over and they DIDN'T WIN.

This is one of the things I don't like about celebrities, they put on an act of indifference and humility that just increase their vanity

Who said the contrary? But winning an Oscar DOES increase an actor's popularity
therefore more $$$$

Anonymous said...

The oscars are problematic. There are plenty of people who have won, and it did little for their careers. There are many actors who have thrived without winning one. I think recognizing this would explain Heath's lack of enthusiasm about winning it.

He actively campaigned for BBM because he believed in the movie. I am sure he would have been happy to have won; that's only natural and human, but he did not actively campaign for any award.

And not winning certainly didn't hurt his career or lessen his esteem among his peers ... unlike a certain former co-star of his.

I read Heath felt pressure after BBM, because expectations were high now and he was scared to disappoint. He was really preparing well for Joker. He locked himself up a few weeks in a hotel room to prepare for the role, writing the Joker diary (I hope it'll be released one day).
I really believe that he was releaved he didn't win the Oscar for BBM. That would have been even more pressure. I kind of understand him. I hate it when people praise me too much, I know the expectations for the next time are high and I don't want to disappoint. I hate that.

In January of 2007, while visiting his homeland of Australia, Heath Ledger presented Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse with an idea to direct a video for their yet-to-be-released song ‘King Rat’. Heath’s vision, brave and unapologetic in its nature, would marry his love of bold and original music with his impassioned stance against the illegal commercial whale hunts taking place of the coast of Australia each year. Always one to operate from his heart and take a stand for what he cared deeply about, Heath's intention was to raise awareness on modern whaling practices through a potent visual piece without having to say a word. It was his way to let the story, in its candid reversal, speak for itself.

I think what was so good about BBM as well was that they showed that love is love rather than being another political, preachy movie.

Well, it is a fictional diary, after all.
Unless, Heath might have wrote some personal insights. But I doubt the Ledgers will give the license to publish it in the future....

Heathens are the ones disliking Ledger, not me

If they love him so much, why don't they love him as what he really was?: An extraordinary actor who was also a man with a seriously drug problem

but i guess you're right, there are worst people in the world who are being defended, So... carry on

That picture of Jake holding Deacon over his head reminds me so much of Michael Jackson holding his non-biological, purchased heir over that hotel railing. In both cases, we have dysfunctional, closeted, ambitious gay men pining for old family ties that no longer exist, working through career and identity problems by buying time with someone else's children.

I can't think of another HW actor who needs a spiritual detox and karmic cleansing more than Jake Gyllenhaal right now. He needs to clear his head, do some cooking in LA with those elementary kids, hopefully with Chris in the background for moral support and mental clarity, and get his mind together before he starts filming again in Sept (thanks again, Anne!). A little male bonding with Jamie Foxx, RDJ, Peter or some other good male friends might help.

And he needs to get away from that soul-leeching, pathologically manipulative gorgon and her creepy little rugrats.

No one is claiming that Heath didn't possibly use illegal drugs at some point. What so many of us object to is the attempt to claim that he was a drug addict whose sordid addiction led to his death, just another dead junkie.

This line gets repeated when there is NO EVIDENCE to support it. There is no evidence that Heath was indulging in illegal drugs at the time of his death. NONE. He died from an accidental mix of LEGAL, PRECRIPTION drugs, drugs that he was taking for his back pain, anxiety and insomnia. The mix of prescriptions is detailed in the report from the medical examiner of New York. Not all of these drugs were taken at the same time. Some had actually been in his system for many hours; so he didn't take six pills at once as some would also imply.

But some of you just think if you repeat the lie often enough it will become the accepted known truth. The problem with this little strategy is that there are too many of us who know the truth, and will not let you get away with your sordid little game.

If you are going to come at Heath, you better know your shit and come correct.

Drugs are drugs,
no matter if you have a doctor friend who can write you a prescription. It is no different from buying it from the dealer around the block.
But of course, celebrities are always one step higher....

Heath took lots of drugs to be able to function and that's the TRUTH. No need to repeat it to make it real, he swallowed them and he died, that's what really proves it

and putting that poor kitten in a meat mincer was totally unnecessary :(
This discussion doesn't worth it

Anonymous said...

^^^^ That's just a (bad?) joke, we all love kittens :)

Anonymous said...

As you said, 6:19, Heath wasn't getting presciptions to get high; he was getting them to function.

Thousands of people die every year from the accidental mix of prescription drugs because they don't realize that some medicines can stay in your system for up to 48 hours, as in Heath's case.

Then only thing Heath's death proves is how any of us can die from a tragic mistake or misunderstanding.

And by the way, you less than subtle attempt to paint, yet again, Heath's death as somehow his fault and illegitmate ... FAIL.
