To Out or Not To Out?

Did you hear the one about the upcoming summer blockbuster heartthrob who has a clause in his deal that allows the studio to dump him if he comes out? Or how about the one about the world-famous singer who celebrates his concerts with all-boy after parties? Everywhere you look, there's a new "Is he or isn't he" rumor. This week, British singer Marilyn admitted to a five year-love affair with Gwen Stefani's hubbie, Gavin Rossdale. A new documentary promises to prove once and for all that Florida Governor Charlie Christ is gay. And heck, Hugh Jackman just loves the gay rumors. But is it "coming out" when you're dragged kicking and screaming out of the closet?

Here's a real story, with the details removed for privacy. A few years back, while casting a tent pole action blockbuster, the studio in charge discovered that it's lead was a big 'mo. They went to him and said essentially, "Look, we need to know you aren't going to come out. We can get you dates with a girl for public appearances, but you can not possibly come out." He refused and was dropped from the project like a hot potato.

Why haven't you heard this story? Because the actor in question wanted a career. It's easy to think of the Hollywood closet as some relic of the past, but it's alive and kicking. Gays and lesbians who come out, do it at enormous professional risks and unlike many other industries, there is no such thing as "employment nondiscrimination" in Tinseltown, whose very existence is about being discriminating.

So, when a celebrity chooses his career over his sexuality, do we blame them? For the most part, it seems we take each outing as a 'victory'. "Aha! I knew you were gay!" we shout and feel vindicated, but let's put it this way – How many of you have gone out and bought a Clay Aiken album since he came out of the closet?

Bruce Vilanch, a constant source of wisdom told me once that we should ask ourselves why we would want to include somebody who doesn't want to be a part of our group? He has a point. Shouldn't we want willing allies? Certainly, of you go out to a gay club or walk hand in had with your boyfriend in the park, you're opening the door to talking about it. After all, we don't want to encourage any more celebrities to do the "Yup, I'm Gay" story in People (which always makes the celeb in question seem like they think we should throw them a fucking parade), but how different is it when we tell a celebrity, "Oh my god, you're totally gay!" from the annoying guy in high school who taunted us with the same remark?

So, tell us – do celebs deserve to be yanked out of the closet or is it a personal decision? Do you have any personal ethics of outing people in your own life?

"sexuality is so fluid"

I hear that a lot of women experience changes of some sort over time in their sexual orientation.

But my impression is that this is much less common in men.

3:23, Yes, you noticed that pattern too? James Franco and JGL are very similar to Heath (particularly JGL). If Heath had been alive, he would definitely be in this movie with Leo.

Is Jake chasing Matt Damon ?

First it was David Fincher's movie Torso, which has had both Matt and Jake's attached to it. Torso is the story of Eliot Ness chasing a serial killer who held Cleveland captive as the killing continued. Matt and Jake were both in London this past December at the same time director David Fincher was, and speculation was that maybe they were negotiations and meetings before time ran out on the option.

Matt's acting has been an influence on Jake's performances and he has mention many times how he would like a career like Matt's.

Promoting Rendition, Jake mention he turned more to movies about C.I.A. for inspiration than talking to actual field agents to find the emotion for play Douglas
Freeman. Saying, "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, which is a merging of the alcoholic and the spy, literally and in the movie. And then also, The Good Shepard actually, which I think, just a little shout out to Matt Damon, that’s a pretty incredible performance. More about the less he does, then the more he does and that’s the kind of performance that I look up to. So, I just tried to copy it."

Matt Damon is also asked about his relationship with Ben Affleck, and actually commented on what he thinks sent Affleck's career into a tailspin. He says Affleck committed to roles that "in hindsight weren't good choices" and allowed himself to become a fixture in the tabloids, to his detriment. "If you end up on the cover of Us magazine, you're fucked," Damon says. "Monday, here's so and so buying a cup of coffee ... Tuesday, here he is again at the bookstore ... By the time it gets to Friday, no one is going to see your movie. There's no mystery to you." Damon also says that he and Affleck aren't currently working on a script, but that they still plan to collaborate on something in the future.

NOT ENOUGH OF JESSICA

JESSICA Biel -- one of the sexiest, most beautiful women in the world -- has had bad luck with her latest movies, and hasn't been seen on the big screen since "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" two years ago. Not even scenes of Biel dancing topless as a stripper in "Powder" -- co-starring Ray Liotta, Kris Kristofferson, Forest Whitaker and Lisa Kudrow -- could get the somber drama a theatrical release. "Powder" is going straight to DVD in June. "Easy Virtue," based on the Noel Coward play, features Biel as an American divorcée who has a whirlwind romance and marriage to an Englishman, and will get a limited release by Sony on May 22. Most of Biel's fans will have to wait a few months to see her in "Nailed," in which she plays a waitress whose brain is accidentally punctured by a nail gun, resulting in weird, lusty behavior with DC lawmaker Jake Gyllenhaal. We can't wait.

I'm sixty-two years old and I still don't believe I'm completely over the terror I experienced every day of my school life. When I turned sixteen I dropped out of school, but it's not just in school where people experience bullying. Out in the wide world, and at home, for years after leaving school I was the object of taunts and harrassment, mostly by christian identified people. I can't believe it's actually gotten worse. My sympathy and thoughts are with these grieving families.

Not that it's a real solution, but when I started being teased in middle school for being a "fag," my mom enrolled me in mixed martial arts. I was a blackbelt by the time I was a sophomore. I was called a "faggot" once more after that. Of course I got suspended for kicking the sh*& out of another kid, but I think for me that was healthier in the long run than suffering constant teasing. Ironically though, even though I was gay, I was closeted pretty heavily and the whole fighting thing just added to my beard - so a mixed bag all in all.

Dead Spy Running by Jon Stock

Date of publication: 25/06/2009

Synopsis

Re-inventing the spy story for the 21st Century. John Le Carre meets Jason Bourne!

Daniel Marchant, a suspended MI6 officer, is running the London Marathon. He is also running out of time. A competitor is strapped with explosives. If he drops his pace, everyone around him will be killed, including the US ambassador to London. Marchant tries to thwart the attack, but is he secretly working for the terrorists? There are those in America who already suspect Marchant of treachery. Just like they suspected his late father, the former head of MI6, who was removed from his job by the CIA. Marchant is treated like an enemy combatant - rendition, waterboarding - but he has friends who are disillusioned with America's war on terror. Friends like Leila, his beautiful MI6 colleague and lover, and Sir Marcus Fielding, the new Chief who resents the White House's growing influence in Whitehall. On the run from the CIA, Marchant is determined to prove his father's innocence in a personal journey that takes him from Wiltshire, via Poland, to India. It was here that the former MI6 chief once met with one of the world's most wanted terrorists, and where the new President of America is shortly to visit. But was that meeting proof of a mole within MI6 or the best penetration of Al Qaeda the West has ever had? And was Marchant's father the keeper of another, darker secret? In a compelling thriller that updates the spy novel for the 21st century -- think John Le Carre meets Jason Bourne - Marchant discovers the shocking realities of personal betrayal and national loyalty, and that love can be the biggest risk of all.

Lindsay Lohan's Fight for Marriage Equality said...

She's young. She's messy. She fights with her sometimes girlfriend and she's gone to rehab. Lindsay Lohan's name has been attached to all of these things -- but she's leading the charge for marriage equality in the process.

Lindsay Lohan’s recently released faux-eHarmony profile (made for FunnyOrDie.com) is perhaps the most brilliant one-minute-and-twenty-nine-seconds in the young actor’s career. She simultaneously manages to poke fun at herself, her relationship with Sam Ronson, and eHarmony -- a homophobic website that would never allow her to post an ad looking for a "man or a woman."

But when I posted a link to the video on my Facebook, I received comments like “she’s young and immature and well -- who cares?”

The answer: I care. Deeply. And so should anyone who’s concerned with the future of queer rights and visibility in the US.

It can’t be stated strongly enough: Lindsay Lohan is unlike any other LGBT celebrity to come before her. She’s young, she’s beautiful, she’s A-list -- and at the top of her career, she began publicly dating a woman. This is not the coy “maybe/maybe-not” game that other young celebs have played, or the outing of a former star. It’s worlds beyond the occasional kiss or the admission to having “dated women in the past,” which, until now, comprised the most radical truth that Hollywood stars would own up to.

While never choosing a label and avoiding public statements, Lindsay Lohan lived her relationship with Sam Ronson in the public eye almost exactly, one feels, as she would have had she not been famous. They partied, they made out, they fought, they bought groceries. And yes; I read about it every time. Not just because I love gossip, but because Lindsay Lohan is both representative of and at the forefront of an important cultural shift in the way sexuality plays out in the public sphere. She is the first of a new post-identity wave.

And it is this same wave that is helping to win the fight for same-sex marriage -- as well as other queer issues like same-sex adoption, anti-violence bills, and job discrimination. In the aftermath of the vote on Prop 8 in California, an important set of data came out: sixty-three percent of voters aged 18 to 29 rejected Prop. 8. But fifty-four percent of voters 45 to 64 supported it.

If that’s not a generational shift, then what is?

It’s not to say that time alone makes change, but instead that the work of organizers, radicals, and individuals brave enough to come out and educate those around them accrues over time. Lindsay is the flowering of the queer movement in this country: She has not attempted to sanitize or hide her life for anyone. She’s queer, she’s messy, she’s had problems with drugs and alcohol, she gets dressed up and flashes her shit, she fights with her girlfriend (sometimes publicly) -- frankly, she sounds like a lot of people I know.

The more honest she is about her sexuality, the more it creates the normalized expectation among young people that sexuality is not a big deal. Of course, there is a danger in this, because violence and discrimination are still the norm for many queer people -- especially those who are not white, beautiful, rich, young and/or gender-normative.

Now is not the time to pat ourselves on the back and believe that we live in a post-homophobia world. But this new attitude offers a deep well of potential for taking the queer movement in a radical direction. In the post-identity future, where same-sex desire is less likely to be an inherently radicalizing identity, we must find a way to continue to be relevant.

The issue of marriage has long been a divisive one in the queer community. Some see it as the final frontier to equality; others as a misguided move toward assimilation and away from more important issues, such as housing discrimination or the never-ending violence against transgender people.

Personally, I’m not invested in marriage. I think discrimination is wrong, but I’m not sure why the government should give tax benefits to anyone based on who they’re sleeping with. Yet when marriage is tied to important freedoms like citizenship, keeping families together, and health care, I can understand the appeal... though I’d personally rather decouple these benefits from relationship status. Sadly, that’s another fight, one we’re not likely to have soon.

But in a world where more people can be honest about their sexuality, and issues like equal marriage rights seem an obvious question, perhaps we can one day move on to these greater issues.

With Lindsay, of course, leading the way.

The Informers review, part about Austin:

With so many characters, Austin did not have a lot of screen time, but when he was on, well, he was certainly beautiful to look at. And he didn't have that flatness so many of the other actors had, his character was more animated. Again, that was clearly the effect intended b the director, no one was to show any real emotion, etc. I also kind of like Jon Foster, and I thought Brad Renfro was really good. I also kind of liked Amber Heard. I usually don't like that young blonde starlet type, but there is something about her, I thought the same thing when I saw her in Pineapple Express.

And finally, sadly I didn't even find it all that it all that hot, with one wonderful scene that kind of took me by surprise, more on that in minute. The sex scenes were all very short, probably not much longer than what you see in the trailer. And when you throw in what I saying above about the effect the director went for, again they were kind of flat, you were probably supposed to think they were bored, alienated from other people, etc. There was one that was not in the trailers, four of them in bed together, Austin with Amber Heard, with the two women in the middle of the bed and the men on the outer sides. As for Martin and Graham, you don't see them having sex together, the only touching was a scene where the wake up in the morning in bed together, dressed, but one's arm is sort of touching the other's.

Bottom line, I felt like the director didn't really know what he wanted to do. Clearly he wanted to stay away from being another Less Than Zero, which I guess Ellis didn't think was true to his material, but if it had gone that route it would least have been trashy and entertaining. But by shying away from showing too much of the sex, the darkness, the lack of emotions, the flat acting, well, it was just a flat movie. Such a waste of so many talented actors. Seriously, I think Austin has gotten to show more range in OTH than he did in The Informers.

Okay, now for the best part for me, and spoiler alert for anyone that would rather be surprise.....*

The scene of Austin with Bassinger. I assume most have seen the clip of that Spooky has, where he's putting on a shirt, and then comes back and leans over her. Well, that scene starts on Kim's face, and then the camera pulls back and Austin is kneeling on her butt naked. (She was under a sheet, as in the rest of the scene) OMG. That was definitely what the WaPo review was referring to Wicked. He was so beautiful, and the scene just took me by surprise, and took my breath away. But it was so brief, seconds, and then forward to what is in the clip at Spooky's, and then on to the next character.

Q: Just how exactly does AfterElton.com qualify a person as ‘openly gay?" You have now twice awarded your coveted "Gay of the Week" to American Idol's Adam Lambert, who to my knowledge is not openly gay. I understand the reason people are assuming that he's gay is because he affects a sort of glam rock image, as well as some nebulous comments about YouTube videos and MySpace postings. If that's enough to make someone "openly gay" in your editorial eyes, fine. But there is an actor who is mentioned frequently on your site, plays a very prominently gay role on television, and, at least within the industry, is openly gay, though he has yet to do the Ellen cover of Time thing, and yet you make no mention of his orientation. To your credit, you haven't inned him either, but if innuendo is enough to throw Adam in the van with Lance, Luke, Clay, and Neil Patrick Harris, why the double standard? – Turner, Virginia Beach, VA

A: There’s no double-standard, but the answer is complicated. For us to refer to someone as “gay” – not necessarily “openly gay,” mind you – it’s got to be more than online rumors or “everyone knows it.” But as AfterElton.com editor Michael Jensen recently explained in an editorial letter, it’s no longer the case that we require than an actor actually come out and say, “I’m gay.”

Adam Lambert is a good example. What tipped it for us? It was partly that series of recent pictures that are far more than “nebulous”: they show someone who looks exactly like Adam kissing another guy. So when these photographs surfaced, we asked Adam (through Fox) if they were, in fact, him, and while he didn’t specifically confirm that they were, he didn’t deny it either. With other media, he has gone further, basically admitting that, in fact, the photographs are of him.

Then, yes, there are also those videos that have surfaced of him simulating gay acts on stage and making comments where he strongly implies that he’s gay (and not bisexual, for the record).

At some point, it just seemed silly not to refer to him as gay. While we don’t out people at AfterElton.com, we’re not going to censor our reporting in deference to someone who’s never actually said the words, “I’m gay.”

But what of the television actor you refer to? Yes, there’s been a lot of internet rumors and speculation, but we have yet to see any actual evidence – and definitely nothing that approaches what we’ve seen of Adam.

What’s the point of all this? Well, as I said, it’s complicated. And it often requires a judgment call of some sort. You may not agree with the call we make in any specific instance, but I hope you can appreciate that we never simply repeat rumor or gossip, that we do our best to be fair to the person involved, and that we give this a lot of thought.

Iowa to Begin Marrying Gay Couples Today said...

Religious leaders across Iowa celebrate landmark: "Hundreds of same-sex marriage supporters celebrated alongside religious leaders Sunday in Des Moines, as gay couples prepared to marry across the state...The Rev. Mark Davis, pastor at Heartland Presbyterian Church in Clive, said he will not marry same-sex couples because his church does not recognize gay marriage.

Nonetheless, he voiced his support for 'all of God's children' to marry. 'We can all be a part of this beautiful sunrise,' Davis said. 'I am in a denomination that will not allow me to marry same-sex couples, but I think same-sex marriage is a wonderful gift that has been too long denied.' During the service's call to worship, people in attendance recognized those who never lived to see the day when their partnerships would be legally recognized."

What's he supposed to say? Essentially both actors both wanted to be seen as straight so he's just going with their public wishes, non?

Have either actor said "I am gay"? Nope. So, what's this guy supposed to say? He's not their personal keeper. Neither were/are out and now one's dead and the other's not far off professionally strapped in the closet, bearding for America with a career/image fast going down the dumper.

Jack/Jeff from IMDB is gay? Really? He is a Reeke fanboy and used to talk trash about Heath, called his character in BBM "Ellis". LOL. I honestly thought he was straight. The worst thing with multi-personalities is you can never tell if they're not even the gender they claim or hint at being.

Jack/Jeff could be a female. A celebrity. A politician. A PR troll. Someone intelligent but intense/frustrated posting from a jailcell or asylum. Someone with too much time on their hands and no hope of a real job or life outside the internet sphere. Who the hell knows.

And whatever he/she, straight or gay is, or isn't, gay people have been some of the most incessant closet-defenders as well. Or simply to protect someone they take onboard for whatever reason, and can pursue their own opinion violently on the internet. Even if that opinion is completely unfounded and wrong.

Did my weekly check on GB last night. It looks like Brother's Spy read OMG's post on Saturday about Jake and the Spy movie, then made up a story about how his "source" told him Jake had a meeting with the studio about this project early last week, and that is why Jake was out with the screenwriter at the end of the week. Of course all the babblers cooed over how wonderful it was of him to share this "information" with them. I couldn't help myself and decided to post about his source, which of course was promptly deleted. :-D

Of course we all know BS is a troll. And we all know where he does a lot of his spying.

If a recall correctly, Stephen was ID'd by the photo agency that took the pics, they were labeled on IHJ and Jared. The speculation about the new project came from a blog slash/film, OMG used that blog as a source for the post.

That speculation from slash/film popped up on google, so BS got that info from that, also GB posted the info in their comments section on Saturday as well.

So if anything Jack/Jeff got the same info and added his own "news" from the same place OMG/GB did, he didn't have to get it from OMG, no need to.

BS credits slashfilms inhis comments at GB, he added the other crap to make it sound like he had inside information. The slashfilm blurb popped up in google, that's his source just like OMG.

Someone on GB posted about Stephen and the X17 pics 11PM on 4/24, the OMG post was on 4/25. He used the "meeting" to impress because the information/speculation was already out there.

It was put out there by Jake's PR.

LIONSGATE(R) (NYSE: LGF), a leading next generation filmed entertainment studio, and Relativity Media, a premier media and entertainment company, announced today that they have finalized a new multi-picture, multi-year deal under which Lionsgate will acquire U.S. distribution rights for up to five Relativity Media productions per year. The agreement builds upon the successful relationship established by the companies during the past two years, when they partnered on the critical and commercial hits THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM, 3:10 TO YUMA and THE BANK JOB. The announcement was jointly made by Joe Drake, Lionsgate President, Motion Picture Group, and Co-Chief Operating Officer, and Ryan Kavanaugh, CEO of Relativity Media.

Said Drake, "Ryan Kavanaugh and his colleagues at Relativity Media have built an extraordinary company that is one of the industry's most prolific suppliers of broad-appeal, talent-driven motion pictures. This agreement solidifies the long-term relationship we built together through successful partnerships on 3:10 TO YUMA, THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM and THE BANK JOB. We are thrilled to bring these new movies into the Lionsgate family, adding to the tally of first-rate productions that will define the Lionsgate release slate going forward."

Said Kavanaugh, "This deal represents a big step in the evolution of a partnership between two forward-thinking companies. Lionsgate is defined by its keen ability to take smart risks on compelling films. Lionsgate treats its distribution of films as an owner, thinking creatively about how to approach every film uniquely and maximize the value of each and every project. These films are in great hands thanks to this relationship."

The first title to be released under the new agreement is BROTHERS, the highly anticipated new film directed by six-time Academy Award(R) nominee Jim Sheridan (IN AMERICA, MY LEFT FOOT). Tobey Maguire, Academy Award(R) nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Academy Award(R) nominee Natalie Portman star in this drama about the rivalry and ultimate redemption of two brothers in love with the same woman. Based on the award-winning 2004 film by Danish writer/director Susanne Bier, BROTHERS is expected to be released by Lionsgate later this year. It will be followed by the supernatural thriller SEASON OF THE WITCH and the action/comedy THE SPY NEXT DOOR, both of which are currently in postproduction. Directed by Dominic Sena (GONE IN 60 SECONDS), SEASON OF THE WITCH stars Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman and introduces Claire Foy in the story of 14th Century knights transporting a girl suspected of being the witch who has spread the Black Plague. SEASON OF THE WITCH marks Relativity's first film in their output arrangement with Charles Roven's Atlas Entertainment. Directed by Brian Levant (ARE WE THERE YET?), THE SPY NEXT DOOR stars Jackie Chan as a mild-mannered suburbanite who agrees to babysit his neighbor's unruly kids, only to have them accidentally blow his cover as a secret agent. Additional titles will be announced at a future date.

The deal was negotiated for Lionsgate by Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Wendy Jaffe, Executive Vice President Business & Legal Affairs, Acquisitions and Co-Productions, and Sean Kisker, Executive Vice President, Strategic Planning & Operations, Motion Picture Group; and by Ryan Kavanaugh, Chief Executive Officer, Tucker Tooley, President of Production, Andrew Marcus, Chief Operating Officer, and Linda Benjamin, Executive Vice President Business & Legal Affairs on behalf of Relativity Media.

Everyone’s getting married on location!

Page Six is reporting that Maggie Gyllenhaal will marry Peter Sarsgaard in Italy in May. Maggie and Peter are parents to 2 year old Ramona, have been together forever, seem very well suited, and are both extremely well respected among their peers though chances are, their wedding style will be significantly more low key than Salma and M Pinault. They don’t seem the splashy type.

Maggie is however, in her own unique way, a total fashion plate. The dress will matter. And since she’s so close to her brother Jake, it’s a good bet he and Reese Witherspoon will be around, as well as the likes of Liv Tyler and perhaps even Kate Winslet – they’re all in the same New York posh mommy circle.

Maggie stars in Kate’s husband Sam Mendes’s next movie Away We Go due out in June which I’m mentioning yet again because I love the trailer so much. Have you seen it? If no, please watch below. Note Maggie in yet another scene stealing supporting role. And her voice. She has such a great voice.
(Michelle Williams is not part of the "posh mommy circle"? ;) )

If this report is true - and remember that Lainey is ill-acquainted with the truth - than I don't think that snobbishness has anything to do with it. This suspiciously planned wedding is just another example of the responsible big sis covering for her thoroughly loopy, slightly depressed, semi-reliable, closeted little brother. I remember Reeke Rome pics but i don't recall the piggyback. I remember the ones with the walking with R head in J's shoulder, the hands in each other's pockets (gross) and J paying extra attention to the naked statue but nope, no piggyback. But if there was one i believe you.

No, it's in the "How to beard and fake a relationship in Hollywood" PR manual.

Obama's First 100 Days, Not For Gays said...

They say a presidency is defined by its first 100 days and by most accounts, Barack Obama's was about as much of a success as you could ask out of someone asked to preside over the worst financial crisis of a generation. The reviews are coming in. Sen. Lamar Alexander told Bloomberg News, "At the beginning of his presidency, President Obama is doing very well", Reuters says, "Obama's efforts to make a sharp break with Bush were arguably the easy part. He has laid the foundation for a new less aggressive foreign policy, but delivering concrete results will be harder" and while Gawker rightly points out that the survivors of Lost battled smoke-monsters, saved the planet and shagged up with most of each other in the same time span, the reality is that our smooth, cool-as-a-cucumber President has done well in his first sprint as President– except of course, when it comes to gay rights.

There, he's fallen behind– big time.

Now, I know what you're going to say– "Hey! There are bigger issues at hand! Like the fact the economy is collapsing!" However, let's face it– there will always be wars, crises and other geopolitical concerns that will seem like more pressing demands than issues of social equality, which are, by their very nature, deep-rooted and long-gestating. The fact that Obama has stayed curiously silent during these 100 days, only occasionally mentioning gay rights (which admittedly, is an improvement over his predecessor) while during that time, we've seen two states legalize marriage and the nation's most populous state hold hearing in the California Supreme Court on Prop. 8 is surprising. It's hard to imagine a time when the discussion of equality for gays and lesbians has been more front and center in the broader populace and yet our president, who campaigned with promises to deliver an end to much of the legalized discrimination against LGBT people, has refused to put his hat in the ring.

It's clear that Obama cares about gay people (or at least our votes) and his advisers have said that he's begun to lay the groundwork on Don't Ask-Don't Tell, but on other pieces of key legislation, such as the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, he's not been a leader. Of course, were Obama to stick his neck out for equality issues, he would undoubtedly draw fire from conservative quarters, but we're seeing a distinct difference between the man on the campaign trail and the man in the Oval Office.

Barack Obama the Campaigner was about fiery and lofty rhetoric that spoke truth to power. He enveloped his candidacy in a personal narrative of a man who saw the American Dream, made it work for him and whose life goal was to make it accessible to all Americans, regardless of race, creed or sexual orientation. Barack Obama the President is another guy entirely. He's shown a Machiavellian bent, interested more in arranging the chess pieces of political power to achieve his policy goals. Some critics say he's afraid of a fight, his staff says he's about keeping fights from ever developing.

This is all well and good. We never expected Obama to be All-Hope-All-The-Time, however at some point, he needs to deliver on his campaign promises to LGBT folks. His political capital is at its highest now, and as previously mentioned, the national discussion about LGBT rights is in the public eye. So, what is he waiting for? The power of the White House is enormous and even one speech, in which the president comes out and calls for Congress to move on LGBT equality bills would have enormous impact. As the Great Consensus Builder, Obama would be happy to find that he has support in Congress for some of the most basic rights measures. Don't Ask-Don't Tell and the repeal of DOMA may take some time, but if these things are to happen, the foundation must be laid– if not in the first 100 days, then when?

The Family Gyllenhaal said...

So if Peter and Maggie are really getting married, the Gyllenhaal family dynamics will be interesting to say the least...

Jake shows up with Reese? WHO CARES? The much more intersting story is if Mommy and Daddy Gyllenhaal show up. If so, who do they bring? Will Stephen show up with his lovely editor Cantera? Do Jake and Maggie pay their mid life crisis dad any attention? Will Reese roll her eyes in disgust at the whole thing??? Ah, to be a fly on the wall for that family celebration! Fun stuff!

Maggie is however, in her own unique way, a total fashion plate. The dress will matter. This is what I wanna see. :)

If the whole Maggie/Peter wedding is true, I think it would be interesting to see if Jake does bring the Chin with him. Maggie is notorious for her dislike of the paps and for avoiding photo ops. I mean she lives a few blocks away from Michelle and Matilda, how many pics of Maggie and Ramona do we see? Practically none. If Reeke does go to this supposed wedding, I doubt if Maggie would be happy having her private wedding turned into a weekend long Reeke photo shoot. I have no doubt that the pics of Jake, Maggie and Ramona in LA were done with Maggie's approval and I am also of the opinion that Maggie can't really stomach the Chin. That's why Witherbeard didn't go with Jake to NYC and why she wasn't part of that restuarant photo op.

You shouldn't forget that they practically stalk Matilda because of who her father is. You can't really compare Maggie/Ramona with M/M situation.

If Maggie and Peter get married, it will be very private, I agree, even if Reeke attend. I'm sure they won't make a photo op out of it. And we don't know whether Maggie doesn't like Chin or not.

I'm pretty sure that Maggie made a ton of money from her percentage of the box office earnings from TDK. At last count didn't TDK make something like 500 million? I'm sure Maggie got just as much or more money than the Chin. And the Chin doesn't have that much weight in HW. I'm sure Maggie has no problem getting work.

Anonymous said...

^^It's not as if Michelle and Matilda are famewhores and arrange all the ops. At least I think they don't. ;)

TDK cast made a shitload of money. I mean the movie was good and they all, particularly Heath, did a great job. But the circumstances made it a HUGE hit. Frankly, Heath's death made them all earn some extra dough. Sad but true.

Anonymous said...

I though Maggie was one of the weakest things about TDK. Her character was flat and she had no chemistry with Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). Her best scene was the one with the Joker, because of Heath, and I thought she had a lot of chemistry with him.

R9:06, Yes and no. I think you misunderstand WHY TDK became a hit. There were several reasons: One, it was an excellent installment to the Batman franchise--a franchise that is well known and beloved by LOTS of people worldwide and had suffered some damage due to the wretched Batman films (not directed by Tim Burton) in the 1990--Nolan reinvigorated a tired and badly hurt franchise; Number two, it got GREAT notices. Except for a few quibblers, the critics showered raves on the film all around; Number three, its timing was perfect--midsummer. The films that opened at the same time (that X-Files film for instance) were comparatively weak--TDK easily clobbered the competition and grabbed the viewers who didn't want to waste their hard earned money; number four, fan boys and fan girls returned to see the film several times after (that's how "Titanic" got to be the top box office grosser in this country); number five, the morbid curiosity factor surrounding Heath Ledger--people wanted to see what the big deal was over his performance; and (big reason) number six, this was the public's way of honoring this kid, whom they considered by and large, a victim of Hollywood-someone the community did not take care of and used as a way of making money. Why do you think Heath got an Oscar? Do you REALLY think this community that treats other people as nothing but commodities whom they can suck for as much money as they can until they discard them for the next human "product" really wanted to give him that Oscar? They didn't. But they knew from the outpouring of worldwide support and grief shown toward Heath (as demonstrated by the record breaking box office TDK attendance), that if they didn't give him the Oscar, people would come to Hollywood with torches ablaze! Well, maybe not that bad but they feared the public in that regard.

But don't get me wrong--it was a great film but it was also a way for the public to show their support toward Heath, a fallen Hollywood star whom MANY felt bad for.

I agree. By the way, Maggie has spoken very admiringly of Michelle in articles. She has mentioned her as someone she would like to work with. She also mentioned Matilda and how she would like her and Ramona to play together or have play dates. Honestly, I think she felt VERY badly about what happened--remenber she was in TDK and really had to go through that whole publicity campaign where every other question was about Heath and his tragic death. Honestly, I think Jake was traumatized about his death--and still is. Look at how wacked out his behavior has been since Heath's death. You don't think there's a connection?
