Last week in New York City, Jake Gyllenhaal got onstage in front of an audience of more than 2,000 to pursue his favorite new hobby: surprising those who would underestimate him. The occasion was a concert performance of the 1982 Off Broadway classic musical Little Shop of Horrors, and he played the hunched, nerdy, four-eyed male lead, Seymour Krelborn (the role Rick Moranis took on in the 1986 movie adaptation). For New York theater buffs, who can often be simultaneously starstruck and snobbish about these things, he was not the special occasion; that was the reappearance of the much-loved Ellen Greene as the ditsy flower-shop saleswoman Audrey, the role she played 33 years earlier, and Gyllenhaal knew it, graciously ceding the stage to her for a final bow. Nevertheless, he reaped a large share of the next morning’s rhapsodic reviews, led by the New York Times’s chief drama critic’s declaration that he “is one of the few American movie stars who was also clearly meant to be a stage star.” In other words, holy crap, he can sing too.
Gyllenhaal’s two-night-only appearance, which should have leading-man-starved Broadway producers lining up to pin their fortunes on him in the next couple of years, continues a hot streak that is notable for the degree to which it seems motivated solely by his evident pleasure in doing whatever the hell he wants, regardless of the medium or the size of the project. In the last two years, he drew excellent notices as a tormented detective in Denis Villeneuve’s darkly effective suspense thriller Prisoners. He followed it up with a dazzling dual role in the same director’s tiny side project Enemy. After that, he wowed audiences with his turn as a skeletal, terrifying golem made out of ambition and self-help instruction manuals in Nightcrawler. Earlier this year, he made a more than credible Broadway debut in Nick Payne’s dazzlingly difficult-to-play two-character drama Constellations, in which, onstage the entire time, he had to play out micro-variants of several what-if-this-exchange-went-slightly-differently scenarios at lightning speed while maintaining the best British accent by an American actor since The Iron Lady. And in two weeks, moviegoers will see him massively bulked up as a middleweight boxer in Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw, the trailer for which has already engendered a round of is-that-really-him disbelief.

In any case, Gyllenhaal, through the first decade of his movie career, did what he was supposed to do: He made a large variety of interesting choices. He didn’t suck. He didn’t panic. Best of all, he apparently didn’t become cynical. And now he’s reaping the rewards. I haven’t yet seen Southpaw (or the next two movies he completed, Baltasar Kormákur’s climbing drama Everest or Jean-Marc Vallée’s small-scale romantic drama Demolition),3 but at this point, I’m eager to go along for the ride, especially since Gyllenhaal doesn’t seem to follow the “One for them, one for me” business dictates that many of his peers embrace; they’re all for him, and therefore, they’re all for us. He’s become an immersive actor, but not a humorless, remote, or precious one; his evident pleasure in what he’s doing is a safeguard against his making too much of a display of suffering for his art. In Nightcrawler, one of Louis Bloom’s spookiest, most I-heard-this-on-a-talk-show-and-incorporated-it-into-my-cell-structure moments comes when he says, as if it were an article of faith, “Why you pursue something is as important as what you pursue.” Gyllenhaal seems to have absorbed the same lesson, minus the sociopathy. Whatever he’s doing, he’s doing it for the right reasons — and it’s moving him very close to the top of his generation of American actors. And holy crap, he can sing too.

On Tuesday night, Jake Gyllenhaal took the stage at the Berinale Palast for one of the main events of the Berlin International Film Festival: The feting of Meryl Streep.
"When I was asked to present the Honorary Golden Bear to Meryl Streep -- one of the greatest actresses to ever grace the silver screen," Jake Gyllenhaal said onstage at the event -- which took place before the German premiere of "The Iron Lady" -- "I was surprised and flattered."
Gyllenhaal joked that after days of pondering he ultimately decided to do it because it was an opportunity to resolve "some personal issues" between himself and Streep. Gyllenhaal explained that before he knew of Meryl Streep the actress, he knew her simply as "Hank's mom." It seems Jake and Streep's eldest son Henry "Hank" Gummer were teenage pals.
"To be frank," he said. "Meryl Streep was not too fond of the 13-year-old version of me. Back in the early 1990s, Hank and I were going around in our baggy pants and listening to the rap artists of the day -- like Warren G and Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg -- pretending to be gangsters. In truth, and it may come as a great surprise to many of you, we were actually just wussies. But for some reason Meryl didn't take a liking to me and didn't really trust me with her son. As we all know from her work, Meryl Streep has a real capacity to be terrifying. We've all seen 'The Devil Wears Prada.'"
Streep joined Gyllenhaal on stage -- after a seemingly endless standing ovation from the crowd -- and called a truce.
"He was a bad influence on my son," she began. "I remember the first time I met him and he and my son were pretending to be bartenders at his big sister Maggie's birthday party -- which was a cabaret in the basement of their house. They were serving cokes and lemonade, they said. They had little red suits on and fake mustaches, and I'm so glad to see that Jake can grow his own now.
"But Jake Gyllenhaal is the son of the splendid screenwriter Naomi Fomer and director Stephen Gyllenhaal so he comes by his show business pedigree honestly.
But he's also inherited his parents' grace and I thank him so much doing this for me."

Jake Gyllenhaal braved the brutal New England cold on Friday to meet with survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Gyllenhaal is preparing for his upcoming role as Jeff Bauman, who lost both of his legs in the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.
In addition to meeting with several of the survivors while in town, the actor headed to to the Liberty Hotel, where he grabbed a late lunch with a few friends at Scampo restaurant on Thursday afternoon.
Dressed casually, the Southpaw star ate a chicken Caesar salad, while the group shared some tomato, mozzarella and basil from Scampo's mozzarella bar.

CHELMSFORD -- A Hollywood star swooped into town Friday afternoon.
Actor Jake Gyllenhaal met with Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, a Chelmsford native, at Brickhouse Pizza in Chelmsford center from 2 to 4 p.m.
Gyllenhaal, who played prominent roles in "Donnie Darko," "Jarhead," and "Brokeback Mountain,"is reportedly going to play Bauman in a movie about how he lost two legs in the Boston Marathon bombings.
The movie, called "Stronger," is based on Bauman's book, and the movie is in pre-production, according to IMDb's website.
Social media became frenzied about the actor's visit. On Facebook, Danielle Marie Withycombe wrote, "Just went to the Brickhouse to pick up food and Jake Gyllenhaal was there."
She responded to a commenter, "Ya I was shocked he was there myself."
Employees at Brickhouse confirmed his visit, and took photos with him.
"I was in the back in the kitchen and everyone started saying, 'Jake Gyllenhaal's here! Jake Gyllenhaal's here!' It was very exciting," said Laurie Boumil, kitchen manager at Brickhouse.
She added that Bauman is a regular at the restaurant, and has a great outlook on life despite what happened to him at the marathon.
"He goes on like it never even happened," Boumil said. "Just a happy-go-lucky guy."
Bar manager Kristy Sheedy said that Gyllenhaal was casual, comfortable and didn't have a large entourage like other stars.
"It was very exciting for us, and we're grateful for Jeff to bring him here," Sheedy said.

Hope Austin & Jake are having a good time with their children. This whole weekend has read like an old worn Scholastic book. Typical stuff. Austin ramping up the fakery and Jake GPS'ing himself on the east coast.
Of course Jake went to the east coast to start prep for his next movie role. But another big purpose of his trip was to plant him on the east coast until maybe that movie starts filming. They probably stored up several photo ops to use during the times that he is in LA with Austin & the kids.

On Monday, January 25, the Arthur Miller Foundation will present "One Night 100 Years" to celebrate the legacy of Arthur Miller and support the Arthur Miller Foundation for Theater and Film Education in New York City public schools. The one-night-only Broadway benefit performance will feature readings from Miller's seminal plays and personal works.
Greta Gerwig, Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard and More Join Arthur Miller CentennialAccording to The New York Times, Greta Gerwig, Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, as well as playwrights Ayad Akhtar and Katori Hall, have just signed on for the event. They join previously announced performers Alec Baldwin, Ellen Barkin, Laurence Fishburne, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Tony Kushner and Sam Shepard.
They probably stored up several photo ops to use during the times that he is in LA with Austin & the kids.

Simon’s “The Deuce,” starring James Franco, which is set in the porn industry during the 1970s and ’80s, has landed a series order, Variety has learned.
“The Deuce” follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early ’70s through the mid ’80s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world that existed there until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic and the renewed real estate market ended the bawdy turbulence of the area. The series is partly inspired by the career of twin brothers, Vincent Martino and Frankie Martino, who were players in the Times Square world and became fronts for mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry. Franco will play both twins.
Franco is also an exec producer, while his co-star Maggie Gyllenhaal is a producer. She plays a Times Square hooker with the street name “Candy” who is drawn into the fledgling porn industry.
