Yeah, I think, the Cohn brothers. Spike Jonze. Those are the type of people you see in films, and you just want to listen to what they have to say. I had the honour of being on the journey to Cannes with the Cohn brothers, and that was truly so fun. That was what I had always wished for: A mind meld with two brilliant people.
On making modern movies
We live in a world where film has become more business than it has art. So many people’s schedules have become ‘you have them for a week’ or ‘for a month’. The world of film has changed, and it’s shaped by that thing.
On shaking off roles when he’s done
I think you hold a piece of that thing inside you, whether you like it or not, with all the characters you play. When I finished Nightcrawler and Southpaw I don’t think I realised how much time I’d put into the creation of the character. Then you get thrust out of it, and it’s done. And you’re like, ‘Wait, I’m a boxer!’ and ‘Where’s my daughter?!’ (laughs).
On Brokeback Mountain
It still seems close in time. I think it had a part in shaping a mindset, or unshaping it. I’m very proud of that. It was a beautiful screenplay and I didn’t hesitate to take it. I’m an artist. That’s what I consider myself to be. It was about immersing yourself in something, regardless of whether anyone thinks it’s interesting.
On movies in general
They’re political. Whether they’re escapism to avoid the things happening in the world, in reality, or facing things head on.

I've joked around that I've been stalking Jake Gyllenhaal, both in Cannes where he and his upcoming Nocturnal Animals director Tom Ford were having lunch on the Carlton terrace across from me, and in Venice, where the actor made dying by frostbite seem like the perfect way to go, in Everest. But this time, I'd like to think he was stalking me, coming to my favorite festival DIFF, to my beloved destination Dubai to shut it down in style! A woman can have her delusions, can't she? Anyway, I wasn't the only one acting like a teenage girl in his presence. Steven Gaydos, Vice-President and Executive Editor of Variety magazine giggled, as he got his photo taken with Gyllenhaal handing him the "Variety Performer of the Year" award, and said to the audience, right before diving into his questions, that he'd "flown sixteen hours from LA just to get my picture taken with this guy!"
Gaydos' style had me question his questions, and I know most journalists in the audience were shifting in their seats, listening to him ask things like "how do you prepare for a role?" when what we really wanted to know was how Gyllenhaal prepared for a particular role, like the ready-for-everything, hungry-in-so-many-ways Louis Bloom in Nightcrawler. Thankfully, after a few generic questions, Gyllenhaal managed to take the bull by the horn and get his own conversation going, which inspired laughs, when he admitted "I take my guidance from hip hop, you act like your first time might be your last time, and that's from Biggie [the Notorious B.I.G.]". He then brought up his own humanity when he admitted, "I realized early on that I wasn't as smart as I thought I was and had to spend a long time preparing," for a role. He also shared memories of his childhood, with his screenwriter mom, "I remember knocking on her closed door," a few times, he said, "and probably ruining a screenplay or two..."

Those were the days. Jake actually used to smile and shop for groceries, play with his dogs, hang out with friends. Good points, UK connection. Jake was always the domestic one between the siblings. In fact, Maggie used to comment about how great he was with kids. What a wonderful cook he was. Great housekeeper, etc. Jake was presented as the caregiver in that family. Not Maggie. Not Naomi. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he's helping to raise Maggie's kids right now.

Yeah, I have to say that I was thinking Maggie was helping Jake raise his kids, and I'm sure she does help. But the fact that we don't see the girls in NYC any longer is giving me the idea that they've been uprooted from Brooklyn/Park Slope and they're part of the Gyllynichols traveling family band. I agree, m & m, it's looking more like Jake is helping Maggie to raise her girls, not Maggie helping him.

what? ted was not an activist you idiot. he wasnt trying to get the truth out for some cause. if he's no longer paid why would he be publishing gossip? for your free amusement? he was a paid salary contracted employee of E! hired to write embellished celeb gossip for their website. he was no longer needed either because his gossip was boring or he was an alcoholic or both. his 5 year contract was up (this is all online if you look) and they let him go and they let other writers go at the exact same time. E! had almost let him go 5 years earlier and Ted was open about looking for another job, but E! renewed back then. if anyone tried to silence him they didn't do it right because all his blinds are still online at E! and E! owns all of it so Ted couldn't take it with him anyway even if he wanted to.
