Father's Day

Clay Aiken and Parker
Clay Aiken

October 2008

Becoming a father led to another life-changing decision for Clay Aiken, 29, the American Idol runner-up whose awkward charm, flat-ironed red hair and soulful sound inspired a curious and deeply devoted cult of music fans who call themselves Claymates. Long dogged by rumors about his sexuality, Aiken decided the time had come for him to publicly acknowledge what he's known privately since he was in college: He's gay.

Says Aiken: "It was the first decision I made as a father. I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."

Ricky Martin, Matteo and Valentio
Ricky Martin

December 2008

"I’m going to concentrate on becoming a better, stronger, more complete person. All throughout my career — a career I’ve pursued since I was twelve — I have had to make sure to please people and ensure that people were happy with the things I was doing. At this moment, though, I’m focusing on what makes me happy. My sons are happy and they’re going to grow up being sure of themselves. When they ask a question, they will always receive an answer given with the utmost honesty and sincerity. They’re not going to feel ‘different,’ because there are hundreds — thousands — of children all over the world who are raised solely by their mothers or only by their fathers. I’m choosing to focus on the light, not the dark.

I always knew a wanted to be a father. I have such happy childhood memories of my own dad, and I thought it was important to share that kind of love with children of my own.

I felt a real need to see myself reflecting in my children’s eyes, that’s why I decided to go with a surrogate. It was the best option for me at this point in my life. There are people who think that science and medicine don’t go with God, but I see art and God’s hand in each and every one of my sons’ movements, in each smile and every cry. This whole process has been a spiritual one for me. Becoming a parent has been a blessing."

March 29, 2010

If someone asked me today, "Ricky, what are you afraid of?" I would answer "the blood that runs through the streets of countries at war...child slavery, terrorism...the cynicism of some people in positions of power, the misinterpretation of faith." But fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, It fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids were born with.

6:45 PM, did anyone say that Roland Emmerich and Bryan Singer are the only two people in Hollywood? Please don't play dumb.

Anonymous said...

Why would Jake or Austin shirk from private Hollywood social circles just because they are using a common industry PR tool on the outside consumer population?

Jake and Austin don't belong to the same social circle, and I believe they never were "out" as a couple, except to their friends and family.

The problem I always have with people like Joan Rivers advising people to stay in is that I don't think they see how much things have changed/

Things are changing, but we don't know what would happen to A or B list movie actor's career is he decided to come out tomorrow,
and so far there are no volunteers to find that out :)

Sopel, who is married with four kids, rode in the parade in honor of Brendan Burke, who died earlier this year in a car accident after breaking barriers in the hockey world by discussing his sexuality in Sports Illustrated with his father, Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke.

Said Sopel: "When Brendan came out, Brian stood by him, and his whole family stood by him, like every family should. We teach our kids about accepting everybody. Tolerate everybody, to understand where everyone is coming from."

I can't disagree with what he says. But... what frustrates me is that everyone in HW seems to just accept this as a matter of course instead of actively working to change this. I know they believe that they're only following what they believe the public will or won't accept - but I'm bothered by that passive acceptance; it's like they're saying, "Hey, there's nothing we can do about it, that's just the way it is." I wish someone in HW would take a more active stance and be a catalyst for change. The "public" that they fear is the same public that is not going to change without being forced to see that gay men and women are not some strange "others," but people they already know, like and admire.

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/06/28/montana-gop-gay/

Andy Towle is reporting that like the Texas GOP, the Montana Republican Party has adopted a platform that would criminalize “homosexual acts”:

Homosexual Acts

We support the clear will of the people of Montana expressed by legislation to keep homosexual acts illegal.

And you think actors want to come out when this crap is going on?

I’m running out of US states to vacation in...

destiny said...

I'm supposed to think actors have a good reason not to come out because of things like Fox and other homophobia in society?

Tell that to the Grand Marshals I saw march in the parade yesterday in NY: Daniel Choi, Judy Sheppard and Constance McMillan.

Tell it to the millions of gay people who are out in this country, and around the world, battling homophobia and fighting for gay rights and making this world a better place for all gays and lesbians, all while spoiled rich actors throw up their hands in the air and say "I can't do it" because maybe they won't get every single role they want or they might make less money--while still making more money than most people in this country make.

Anonymous said...

I was also watching the NYC Gay Pride Parade on Sunday and I was DEEPLY touched to see Judy Shepard (whose son Matthew was murdered in Wyoming 12 years ago), Constance McMillan (lesbian teen who wanted to go to her prom out and proud) and Lt. Dan Choi (who was fierce and VERY proud of who he was) as the grand marshals. It was truly a great parade--40th anniversary of the march. Another moving moment: when some of the original marchers from the first parade marched.

Jake and Austin did TDAT with Roland Emmerich. For sure they've been to his parties. And Jake had been open about his gayness back when he was planning to come out. It was an open secret. Tough to get the Chilean sheep back out of the herd once theyve been mixed. Thats why the rumors wont die. Too many in the know. When he finally comes out it will be just like Aiken. Known all along.

destiny said...

I really admire all three of them, for very different reasons. I thought it was great that they got all three of them to appear in the same parade because it really brings attention to very different battles going on for gay rights.

Anonymous said...

I think it is great what each of those three people did, but Shepard lost her child to hate, McMillian lost her prom and was forced to become a public figure and Choi has lost his job (almost). Do you see what they have in common: they lost something. None of them were put in that position by their choice. A lot of people forced them into making a stand.

I’m glad that they are standing up and fighting for what they believe in, but not everyone has that in them. How many Rosa Parks where there?

I believe if a top actor stood up, in the height of his career, and said I’m gay, his career would be over. I wish it wasn’t the case, but it is. Yes, they could do TV or Broadway, but that may not be what they want and they may not be good at that.

Look at Tom Cruise. His nutty behavior (I’m not even touching the rumors) has turned so many people off that he is being written off as done.

They are are humans and they are afraid. If an actor gets stalked and hate mail and threats for playing a gay character then when the tell the truth...the crazies will have a field day.

This is why Babblers are so confused. They can't read. "is it true that your kissing scenes with Heath brought rumors about your sexual orientation? A: Only among fools. BBM was much more than a kiss between men. Everything depends on the intelligence of the audience" does not say that people who think he is gay asses. It asks if that is what started the rumors about his being gay. And no it did not. The gay rumors started before BBM and Jake knew he was gay long before that. He did not need BBM or kissing Heath to figure it out.

I don't think you've quite grasped the concept that the beloved Jake is deeply closeted and will use any means or method to label people who label him as 'asses' in whatever subtle or outright blatant way possible.

I came out to the fact that Jake does not intend coming out years ago and it did me good. This is a man that no matter how much you fight over how 'sensitive' and right on he is, will let you down.

He is a product of Hollyweird, he does not intend to come out and risk losing his money and fanbase (such as it is) and he has done his best to appear as stupid and henpecked as possible of late if only the rumors would go away.

He doesn't care what you think or how much you fight over him (and for the record, the fangirls and babblers are fucked, because he's laughing at you too). He cares about money and his career and that you go see his films. You cannot make excuses for him forever.

He is a closet case limp limpet who listens to his advisors too much and always will do.

I hope he makes me eat my words but there's more chance of me fucking flying to the Moon.

I find bearding sad and frustrating because it not only panders to the homophobes, it helps them in their mission to keep gay men and women hidden and ashamed.

So what's the answer, then? With that kind of attitude, blacks would still be sitting at the back of the bus and drinking from separate drinking fountains. I understand the fear, but closeted actors don't necessarily have to make a public announcement and shout to the world that they're gay. They can take small steps. For a start, they could keep their private life private and not talk about it, but also refuse to participate in the fake romances that are an insult to the gay men and women who have chosen to take the risks and do the right thing.

Well said and ITA.

Jake and other public figures have the right to keep their private lives private. But in the immortal words of George W., “[They] can't have it both ways. [They] can't take the high horse and then claim the low road.” Politicians can't use their families to sell themselves to voters and then complain when the public wants to know more about the kids or wife or husband or mistress. Actors can't famewhore and then expect people not to get up into their business.

Say what you want about FOX News, that they tend to be right leaning, and I hear a few things that made me do a double take sometimes, but they were the only newsgroup in the beginning that had the most thorough coverage on the Gulf disaster, when you couldn't find sh*t on it anywhere else. Their coverage was also very good during Hurricane Katrina. Their online site had the most easy to find help information too. In a disaster, all sides need to come together. It says nothing about someone's political leanings. So there's no need to stand up and point the finger and say "homophobe" a la The Crucible. I think most people are smart enough to sift through the news they read and hear, and those that can't, there probably wasn't much hope of changing their minds anyway. News isn't just black and white, there's an entire spectrum in between, and I like to know what going on for all of it.

And yeah, there are and have been lots of Rosa Parks out there.

Hooray for Austin and Sophia too. Sounds like a wonderful Gay Pride parade in NYC with Judy Shepard, Constance McMillan, and Lt. Dan Choi there. The gay community is a varied one, just like any.

I cannort believe someone seems to be belittling gay rights activists by saying well, they were forced into it.

That is also wrong. Choi chose to come out, on his own on the Rachel Maddoow show, in order to fight DADT. It was only after that that they started the process to kick him out.

Judy did not have to become an activist, she could have retreated back into her private life.

The high school girl did not have to push the envelope by asking to bring her girlfriend to the prom. She could have stayed home, or taken a male friend.

Do you think Austin and Sophia will still be doing their oil spill charity a few months from now?

They're starting to remind me of Reese with her AVON gig.

There's nothing wrong with celebrities using their wealth or fame to try to improve the lives of the poor or sick or to help victims of disaster. What makes me mad is when they use charity for publicity and personal image-shaping.

I believe in doing good without telling anyone. But if you're going to go public and especially if you're going to call on others to be charitable, you better walk the walk and lead by example.

You better go to Haiti and bring food and water with you. You better spend time cleaning a suffocating, oil-soaked bird. You better first make a big donation yourself before calling on others to do so. You better run the marathon, not just show up for the photo op, especially when you're being paid squillions to be the Avon Global Ambassador. Anyone can yell "Go, runners, go!" while smiling for the camera. Anyone can twitter "let's donate" while promoting their TV show.

The patronizing attention of publicity hounds does not constitute charity. It constitutes a way for publicity hounds to get attention for themselves.

People argue, at least they're doing something, some kind of good, going to raise all this money to help [insert bleeding disaster of choice]. Sorry, I might give an ear to a famous person who has shown sincere commitment to a cause over time, but I don't want to sponsor some bandwagon-jumping celeb's ego-trip. I'll donate directly, not through them.

By your own words Choi said something because of they started to kick him out, not before. How many walked away quietly? Judy was never going to fade away, both sides were going to never let that happen. The HS kid is probably the bravest of them all and she is from a different generation.

No one is belittling them. I think you need to see that not everyone can live up to your standards.

Not everyone is a Rosa Parks. But, when others stand with them, people become stronger. Look at the boycotts that followed, people did together what they couldn’t standing alone.

It will take several Rosa Parks (But, male, young white movie stars) in Hollywood before many will be honest.

I’m happy that you are secure enough to be out. I know people who are not out at work, but are in real life and I know people who are out in real life and not at work. They get to make that choice. Just because they get a big paycheck doesn’t mean that others don’t the same right.

Do you think Austin and Sophia will still be doing their oil spill charity a few months from now?

This thing is going to be going on for decades, and may have lasting repercussions. I certainly hope people who are interested today will be in it for the long haul. I know I will be.

TBH, I do follow Rachel Maddow, and I watched FOX during the Gulf coverage, I watch CNN, and the BBC, and public television PBS, and NPR (any other initials I forgot?). I watched just about any news I could find on it, and it's the same with any major news event. It's good to keep up with what all sides have to say. I don't think it's a fair assumption to label someone or categorize by what they may or may not watch or an offhanded mention of a news program.

Anonymous said...

^^I have heard things that caused me to raise an eyebrow, a FOX reporter saying that he was puzzled as to why people still blame Bush for the problems we are still having today. Hello??? But that's a good thing, to hear all sides.

Anonymous said...

^^I even heard a so-called expert on a news program say that oil is a natural non-toxic product! While it may be natural, it's far from non-toxic, and I would ask him if he truly believes that to eat an oil-contaiminated oyster. You just never know what you will hear on news programs, and it pays to watch.

Lt. Dan Choi, Judy Shepard are two people I adore. Constance McMillan did a brave thing too. :)

Anonymous said...

So it's a little simplistic to just toss out labels of right, left, etc. just by what people may watch.

Anonymous said...

8:52, not all of us live in the totalitarian state you must do. Some of us can think for ourselves and don't take too kindly to bein' told what kind of news we can and cannot watch.

9:03, no one is telling you what news you can or cannot watch. The question is, how can people assess the veracity of news from all over if, to begin with, they have limited comprehension of what they see and hear. (And read, going by your misunderstanding above.)

You can and should watch news from a wide variety of sources, left and right. But if you're not capable of recognizing Fox news as right-wing - it's an industry joke as a legitimate news source - then what good does it do? You will simply continue to maintain your prejudices and find validation in different media outlets that support your views.

Let's call a spade a spade. Fox is right-biased. It's not just a tendency. MSNBC is biased on the left. (But if Fox is so "fair and balanced", why don't they have any liberal commentators? MSNBC at least has conservative talking heads.)

Anonymous said...

They are what they are, and since it's a free country and we have the First Amendment in our Constitution, everyone has a right to their news and their views. End of story. If people don't like it they don't have to watch it.

Anonymous said...

But if you're not capable of recognizing Fox news as right-wing...

What the fuck? Where to you get off making this assumption? You have no idea what people watch, how often, or how capable they are of discerning their information.

Anonymous said...

You can and should watch news from a wide variety of sources, left and right.

Don't forget the middle. Probably the most influential and valuable. For me personally, I don't watch it regularly, I only did the early stages of the Gulf disaster because I found they had the best and most easily found listing of help services online, and they were doing a thorough job of reporting on the disaster. I said this already.

Newspaper Diligently Corrects the Record About Adam Lambert's Kissing v. Licking said...

When I spotted Adam Lambert licking his male bassist — the same one he "engaged with" at the American Music Awards — during a Nokia Theater performance in New York, I didn't know whether that was a new thing, or he'd be doing that during the whole Glam Nation Tour. You let me know: It was new!

The New York Times, evidently, was also flummoxed; writes the paper in a correction: "A music review on Thursday about a concert at the Nokia Theater on Tuesday night by the singer Adam Lambert referred incorrectly to kissing between Mr. Lambert and his bass player, Tommy Joe Ratliff. During the song “Fever,” they licked each other’s lips; Mr. Ratliff did not merely give Mr. Lambert a quick peck on the shoulder. (He did that later in the show.)"

You misread me. The military was not taking any action against Choi when he appeared on Maddow and came out as a gay soldier, and talked very passionately about why he was doing it. It was only after he was on the show that the military took steps to discharge him. That is just one of many reasons why he is a hero to me.

ITA with these two posts. I know people need to come out in their own time, but in the meantime they shouldn't be out there doing things that hurt the cause. Nothing will change as long as actors are willing to beard and lie, and they make it that more difficult for the people who are out there trying to change things. I think gay actors who actively push straight as the only acceptable identity desrve to be outed.

I don't get the Jake bashing.
According to some of you he's a liar and a coward for not coming out. Well, if he's gay and closeted he's got good reason for it. Look at the masses of narrow-minded people in the US. Look at the Montana Republican Party seeking to criminalize homosexual acts. In this day and age.
BBM did a lot of good for Jake but it also stuck a label on him. Even though he recieved a lot of praise for his acting, he was constantly ridiculed in the media. "Harmless jokes" that must have worn him down. It's easy for those of you who have come out, to taunt him for not doing the same. You're not exactly in the same situation. He's a famous actor in his prime. He loves acting. His livelihood is dependant on people coming to see his films. He knows that America is not exactly gay-friendly. What would you do in the same situation? Are you absolutely certain that YOU would come out? If you say yes, good for you, but you can't demand that he must do the same. Coming out is a big step for ordinary people. Don't you think it's even harder for someone in Jake's position? For one thing, you don't have to read about your coming out in the tabloids. Jake would certainly have to.

And what's up with all the whining about him trying to look straight. Ever occured to you that he might be bi-sexual? During the time he was dating Dunst I remember Ted wrote about TT hooking up with GG and being confused cause he really loved his gf. I know that some gay-men with excellent gaydar find it hard to categorize him. He's recieved so much crap for googling that girl during the Lakers game. What if he enjoys to look at sexy people regardless of their gender. And perhaps he even (Oh, horrors of horrors) sleeps with BOTH boys AND girls. Come on, you're open minded people! So, isn't bi- sexuality a possibility? Or have all of you experienced first hand what he prefers in the bedroom?

Actually the whole twitter thing confirms for me that J&A are together. What better cover than to make people think Austin is spending time with Sophia--and a way to do it without photos and numerous coffee runs. They can make it sound like they were together when they may not have been.

Speaking of which, where are all the photos of them at Prince Sunday night. In this day and age of cell phones, etc., there has to be photos if they were together out in public.

Austin doesn't need that kind of cover, no one really cares if he dates Jake or not, and being "invisible" is much better cover than wanting to be recognised in public.

5:01 you're lectures are more and more ridiculous and hysterical sounding. You can't counter any of the valid statements that are made here so you try to find new tactics that don't go anywhere. What you see as "Jake bashing" is simply people expressing their valid opinion that bearding and fake romances are an insult to the gay community. And I don't know whether Jake is bi or not and I don't care - no need for the silly and melodramatic "horror of horrors" remark - but the relationship with Reese was clearly for publicity only. No one can convince me otherwise b/c I have a brain and two eyes. If he's bi he shouldn't have any problem finding some women he's actually attracted to and dating them. And as 5:19 pointed out, no one is "demanding" anything - that's just your spin on what's being said because you don't like it. Well, that's easily solved - stop reading a blog that bothers you so much.

Anonymous said...

He is spending time with Sophia - they were in the gulf together and they even appeared on Ryan Seacrest's show together. After all that, they don't need to "lie" about seeing Prince the other night. We know they're good friends and she's his beard and they're trying to drum up publicity for their TV show - but that doesn't mean he and Jake are a couple. I don't have any doubt they'll be tweeting about how they spend the holiday weekend.

White Hot Fever

The sexiest witness of Jehovah was honored at the BET Awards last night for giving us a lifetime full of p**sy-popping hip shimmies and dramatic facial expressions that make all your lips pucker. Prince graciously expected his award while wearing a tunic from Lisa Frank's New Age collection with his own image on it. Only Prince (and Liza Minnelli....and the Golden Girls...and Steven Seagal) can get away with wearing a turtleneck with flared sleeves! Jehovah's Witness should make that ensemble their official uniform. That would make me open up the door when they come a knocking.

Prince's tribute also included a performance featuring Alicia Keys's pregnant ass crawling on a piano, Patti LaBelle kicking her shoe off and Trey Songz making doves commit suicide. You can watch it here, but the real entertainment was going on in the audience courtesy of Prince. This is what the purple unicorn thought of Trey Songz acts of butchery:

Dan Savage has the jarring details:

"Pediatric endocrinologist Maria New—of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Florida International University—isn't just trying to prevent lesbianism by treating pregnant women with an experimental hormone. She's also trying to prevent the births of girls who display an 'abnormal' disinterest in babies, playing with girls' toys, becoming mothers, and whose 'career preferences' are deemed too 'masculine.' ... So no more Elena Kagans, no more Donna Shalalas, no more Constance McMillens, no more Martina Navratilovas—because all women everywhere need to grow up to suck dick, crank out babies, and stick to women's work. And the existence of adult women who are clearly not interested in 'becoming someone's wife' and 'making babies' constitutes a medical emergency that requires immediate intervention."

Should James Franco Be the Next Action Star?

We're sure we've made it plenty clear how we feel about Jake Gyllenhaal's abs-over-emotion attempt at being a superhero of sorts. (Although many of you conveniently skipped the part where we said we think the dude is still a totally talented actor.)

But what about his genre-hopping, T-town peer, James Franco? Is he more suited for those big blockbusters or should, he too, stick to the drama and leave the action flicks to actors with more bulk than brains?

James newest Funny or Die video—which, per usual for the site, is light on the funny—got us to thinking. In the clip, J.F. stars alongside Bill Hader and mourns the loss of his Spider-Man supervillain role while also name-dropping his critically adored (and honored) film, Milk.

With his well-trained acting chops, is James a master of all genres—drama, action, comedy, even…soap operas—or should he ditch the capes and punch lines and stick to the emotional mumbo jumbo?

Gotta say, we think J.F. does a damn good job bouncing between flicks (though we're still a bit confused on his continued return to the daytime dramz) but he's shown that he has a knack for humor in Pineapple Express, that he can play serious in films like Howl and that he isn't too shabby in the web-spinning superhero flicks.

We're just hoping the ambitious (and often unconventional) actor won't totally ef up his career by ditching his bread and butter in an attempt to be seen as overly artsy. Sure, throw in a bizarro art installation or unexplained documentary from time to time, but don't forget to wow us on the big screen too!

But we want to hear where you think James shines, tho, please don't say his personal life. We all know that's not true.

Elena Kagan Isn't Going to Tell You What She Thinks About Gay Marriage said...

Good. I'm pleased Elena Kagan was quizzed on same-sex marriage — here by Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Iowa Republican — and states' rights to set their own marriage rules. Kagan did not answer them, citing the Perry Prop 8 trial that's likely headed her (eventual) way, though I'm not sure she would have answered that question anyhow, or at least not in any certain terms. But it's a question that needed asking.

What is curious, however, is Kagan opted to stay quiet on same-sex marriage, but earlier this week weighed in with her thoughts on Don't Ask Don't Tell. Namely, that she doesn't like it.

That response to questioning comes even though there is also a lawsuit snaking through the courts about this issue. Perhaps because her position on DADT, made during her stint as Harvard Law president, was already so well known she merely reiterated what's already public record?

Australia's New Prime Minister Confirms She's Against Gay Marriage said...

Nothing looks set to change with regard to marriage rights for Australian gays and lesbians, at least as it pertains to their new Prime Minster Julia Gillard:

"Days after declaring she did not believe in God, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has distanced herself from the issue of gay marriage, saying she had no plans to legalise it. Ms Gillard told Austereo radio yesterday that it was not the policy of the Labor Party to legalise gay marriage and that was also her own view. 'We believe the Marriage Act is appropriate in its current form, that it's recognising that marriage is between a man and a woman, but we have as a government taken steps to equalise treatment for gay couples in things that government does like social security benefits and the like,' she said."

Q: Who do you consider to be bad examples of gay men? I understand your rational for disliking Perez Hilton, so much so that I agree with your reasoning, but who else do you think has harmed the community, or perhaps does disservice to the community, and why? Are there truly any bad gay men? – Maharajah, West Palm Beach (not yet oil drenched), Florida

A: Well, that's a big fat can-o-worms, 'innit?

But intellectually, I reject the whole “bad gay” argument. If some idiot is going to judge a whole community based on one person, the person who deserves criticism is the guy doing the judging, not the object of the idiocy. Plus, I’m always saying “come out!” and it would make me some kind of a hypocrite if there were people who took my advice, and my response was: “But not like that!”

But, of course, this being me, I can’t quite bring myself to just end my answer there. So let's pop the top off that can and see us some worms, shall we?

Just personally, apart from the whole issue of whether someone is a “bad gay,” I’m on record as not liking people who have sex in public places. Gym saunas and public bathrooms have very specific purposes – purposes that often involve children and disabled and older folks who don’t always have the ability to "clean up" after other people (both my parents are/were disabled).

And honestly, why should they have to clean up? If your particular turn-on involves the danger of being “discovered” or seen by someone else, learn to role-play: don’t incorporate the rest of us, unwillingly, into your sex life. Frankly, I find this to be a form of a sexual harassment.

You’ll never find me out waving pom-poms for men who cheat on their spouses or partners (and in my book, cheating means “lying”). I’m also not a big fan of people who have sex with cheating spouses or partners. Yeah, yeah, you’re not the one doing the actual lying, but when you buy stolen goods you may not be the one doing the the actual stealing, but you're still committing a crime.

If you’ve ever been cheated on, what did you think of the guy who knew your boyfriend was cheating – and aided and abetted him anyway? And consider this: would you cheat with the husband of your best female friend? If there's nothing "wrong" with cheating with a married man, why not?

See? In your heart of hearts, you know it's wrong.

I personally suspect there’s a special place in hell for the zillions of gay fashionistas on TV and the gay gossip mongers who seem to take such glorious delight in ripping other people apart. Despite the irony of the fact that I make part of my living here at AfterElton.com by criticizing other people, I tend to be of the “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all” school of thought. I believe that if you absolutely have to dump all over someone (as I’m sometimes required to in my job here), it should always be about the work – it should never be personal. And even then, you should also feel really, really guilty about it.

I suspect this is all making me sound hopelessly square, but is the Golden Rule really such a terrible way to live your life?

(Sidenote: if I dislike catty bitchiness, why do I then like Kathy Griffin? Maybe I’m deluding myself, I find out completely different than Perez Hilton. At her best, I think she takes on the pompous and self-deluded. But I do think she sometimes crosses a line.)

Finally, we come to closeted anti-gay gay Republicans. I used to hate them, but lately, I’ve come to the conclusion we kind of owe them a debt of gratitude. With so many of them being exposed – so much so that it’s become a major “meme” – I think that, ironically, they’ve done more to undercut the legitimacy of the conservative right on gay issues than anything an out gay person ever could’ve done.

They've made the far right look so completely ridiculous that whenever anyone is too anti-gay these days, the average person now shakes his or her head and thinks, "Probably a closet-case."

Good job, closet-cases!

Ask the Flying Monkey! said...

Q: Why is Bradley Cooper considered a "gay fave"? After watching The Hangover (which did have its moments, but overall, meh), I was disappointed in him for doing a character that had the line "Paging Doctor F**got". And now his new movie The A-Team has stirred up controversy. Has he done anything of note for the gay community? Or is it just because he’s attractive? – Via Phone

A: I was underwhelmed by The Hangover too, but I did think the “taser” scene was hilarious.

I suspect Bradley Cooper is a gay fav because (a) yes, he’s hot, and (b) he got his start playing gay or gay-ish Sensitive New Age Guy-type roles in Wet Hot American Summer (where he had a steamy gay sex scene) and Alias (and even Nip/Tuck, where his character was not bi, but "I'll-screw-anything"!).

Cooper is straight, but I suspect these roles are the source of all those gay rumors. Then, exactly like Paul Rudd (who got his start in very similar roles), Cooper unexpectedly found major mainstream success, and he buffed out and gravitated toward grittier, decidedly more macho roles in movies like The Hangover.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that he was playing a homophobic jerk in The Hangover – although, like you, I’m also getting pretty tired of the catch-all “the character’s supposed to be a homophobic jerk!” justification for gay jokes in American movie comedies these days, especially when these roles are clearly supposed to be “point-of-view” characters for a supposedly-heterosexual male audience to identify with.

That said, Cooper has always had a very open, very pro-gay attitude in interviews. And he recently played gay in (spoiler alert!) Valentine’s Day, and he auditioned for the role of Harvey Milk in Milk.
