Father's Day

Clay Aiken and Parker
Clay Aiken

October 2008

Becoming a father led to another life-changing decision for Clay Aiken, 29, the American Idol runner-up whose awkward charm, flat-ironed red hair and soulful sound inspired a curious and deeply devoted cult of music fans who call themselves Claymates. Long dogged by rumors about his sexuality, Aiken decided the time had come for him to publicly acknowledge what he's known privately since he was in college: He's gay.

Says Aiken: "It was the first decision I made as a father. I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."

Ricky Martin, Matteo and Valentio
Ricky Martin

December 2008

"I’m going to concentrate on becoming a better, stronger, more complete person. All throughout my career — a career I’ve pursued since I was twelve — I have had to make sure to please people and ensure that people were happy with the things I was doing. At this moment, though, I’m focusing on what makes me happy. My sons are happy and they’re going to grow up being sure of themselves. When they ask a question, they will always receive an answer given with the utmost honesty and sincerity. They’re not going to feel ‘different,’ because there are hundreds — thousands — of children all over the world who are raised solely by their mothers or only by their fathers. I’m choosing to focus on the light, not the dark.

I always knew a wanted to be a father. I have such happy childhood memories of my own dad, and I thought it was important to share that kind of love with children of my own.

I felt a real need to see myself reflecting in my children’s eyes, that’s why I decided to go with a surrogate. It was the best option for me at this point in my life. There are people who think that science and medicine don’t go with God, but I see art and God’s hand in each and every one of my sons’ movements, in each smile and every cry. This whole process has been a spiritual one for me. Becoming a parent has been a blessing."

March 29, 2010

If someone asked me today, "Ricky, what are you afraid of?" I would answer "the blood that runs through the streets of countries at war...child slavery, terrorism...the cynicism of some people in positions of power, the misinterpretation of faith." But fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, It fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids were born with.

writing RPS about him
it's recycled and plagiarized slash

Is that what RPS means?! Recycled Plagiarized Slash? Or does it stand for Recycled Plagiarized Shit?

Anonymous said...

Maybe this blog should be renamed to
"Waiting for the second coming of HL" ;)

Anonymous said...

LOL - that was totally unconscious on my part - RPS = Real Person Slash, but Recycled Plagiarized Slash is more appropriate, especially from LG.

Anonymous said...

Tbh, I think that after being initially creeped out Jake would be flattered.

It would be a hoot if Jake is one of the BBM slash writers.

Anonymous said...

LOL, it would be. LG has gutted my slash like a fish - if I didn't enjoy writing so much I'd quit. I've no idea how she's getting into my journal.

Anonymous said...

Isn't he sweating in that hoodie?

I think it's in the low to mid 70s in LA. Almost freezing!

I don't see much of the J/H fanfic anymore. RPS isn't my thing.

Davide Bo said...

Jake said HW is hypocritical because HW know many actors are gay or bi but pretend to be unaware of it. And when they come out, HW marginalize them.

Anonymous said...

All slash is crap. Annie P, who wrote BBM was embarrassed with the shit sent to her.

Anonymous said...

That's just it - fanfic is fun, but it can be not everyone's cup of tea and downright crappy, mine included. Why would anyone want to steal it?

Anonymous said...

it seems to me that I have read some of the crappiest fanfic on this blog by brokies, the J/H crap is the worst

Seriously, what J/H fanfic have you read here? Posters said over and over again they don't believe Jake and Heath had sex so what the hell are you even talking about?

Anonymous said...

I can't believe someone would actually send fanfic to Annie P. It's basically for fans only to enjoy.

Some writers are very good tho - and they don't need to steal ideas from others to do it, or ridicule them and then steal it. Makes no sense. LG isn't a nice person.

Jake looks like the unabomber

Either that, or you and the babblers' minds are on the same track. The horror! :)

Anonymous said...

A unabomber against cancer!

The good writers have stopped writing. I think all started with Heath's death and Jake's silence. BBM fandom is pretty much kaput.

Anonymous said...

Well, the fandom's been around for awhile now, and perhaps it's time to move on.

Anonymous said...

Jake with hair on his muzzle makes him look like either Atticus or a young goat. I can't decide.

Anonymous said...

The babblers will continue to write slash...for each other. ;)

Yes it was. :)

RPS isn't my thing.

It's not my cup of tea either, especially Jake/Peter slash.

There used to be creepy incest slash floating around about Elijah Wood and his sister and Jake and Maggie, ewww.

Gross. Who the heck reads that?

Geez, no one believes Jake and Heath were more than friends for many reasons starting with Heath was straight. The guy had a habit of going through pussy with a dizzying speed. I thought this was common knowledge.

Christ we're you under his bed you fangirl! How could anyone know this to a letter?

We can speculate but we don't know for sure.

I like the idea that Heath was into Jake and they might even have been the real story behind BBM, so sue me, twits. Who wanst to tow the line and follow the sheep who think they 'know' Heath was 100% straight and that he could never bottom for some guy. Or do drugs.

Fuck you all, honestly, you know jack. Anything could have happened. We don't know these people.

Since we haven’t seen him in a real sex act (BBM was a movie) how do we know if he tops or bottoms. I thought most younger gays do and enjoy both.

I can easily see Austin’s legs (or ass) in the air. Just because he’s tall doesn’t mean he is a top. Actually, after reading his tweets, i could seeing him say yes to doing almost anything to get further in his career.

Anonymous said...

You have to admit Heath seemed to be a lot more alpha than Austin, even if he was very shy. Like it or not, he was a womanizer through and through so if he had sex with men IMO it was as a top. I think it was implied in that rentboy BI that it was Heath (if it's about him) who did the fucking.

I have two male friends that are gay couple and they are both a bit fem in clothes, manner and speech. I always wonder who tops because they both “seem” to be the bottom. I’ve never asked. They live in a different city and when I stayed with them I was surprised how different their apartment was. It was very masc. and male. No shiny things in that apartment, except when they were in it.

I think Heath liked pleasure and if he got pleasure from bottoming, he would bottom. There are plenty of men who bottom for women, so who knows.

I would figure that it would be safer to top rentboys, anyway.

Anonymous said...

As a straight woman, it depends upon what kind of mood we're or I, or he, is in. :) I like to be topped, but I like to top too. ;)

Davide Bo said...

About rentboys...proof?
But even if this is true, so what?
Heath was not a saint and he was unhappy with Michelle...maybe even SAINT MICHELLE enjoys rentboys too. Who knows?

Anonymous said...

I read Michelle was into threesomes with boys and girls during Dawson's Creek. She's definitely not a saint.

Anonymous said...

^^one threesome involved Busy P. and Josh Jackson, supposedly.

And, PoP has become the top video game movie worldwide of all time. It will probably still be in the top ten next week. It may not be the hit in the US they wanted, but it won’t lose money (there will be DVD rental/sales, TV, etc to make more money). For Jake, the international market will help him for other movies.

Anonymous said...

I would figure that it would be safer to top rentboys, anyway.

Safer in what way? Supposing the BI is true and it happened more than once, Heath had the rentboys sign confidentiality agreements and I'm sure used protection so to top or bottom would be equally safe as long as nothing got out.

Anonymous said...

And, PoP has become the top video game movie worldwide of all time.

Some good news finally, I guess it could be worse.

Not a shipper, but I wonder if Jake, Heath and Michelle ever had a threesome? It was strange to me that Jake showed his affection so openly towards Heath, even in front of Michelle, who didn't seem to mind at all. I was surprised how close the three of them seemed during promo time. I really can't put my finger on the relationship the three had. Poor Annie, was always left out though.

Well, I have noticed some similarities in fanfic that are a little too close for comfort, but it could be coincidence, I suppose. She herself freely said that if people thought friends-locking protected them they were sadly mistaken, over at the DC forum.

Anonymous said...

Tbh, I think that after being initially creeped out Jake would be flattered. ;)

LOL. Maybe so, it would depend on which RPS he read! But I don't think he'd be flattered to know that some lashers/babblers conflate him with the Jack T character, which is why they are so defensive of both Jake and Jack T. Some of them came right out and admitted as much on the lashers thread. Now, that's creepy.

The studio only gets about 50 percent of the box office, that means POP has taken in roughly 150 million--and needs another 150 just to break even.

Anonymous said...

They do take it a little too seriously I think. I almost felt that if you were a Heath fan, to them it meant you weren't a Jake fan. I'm a fan of both. I don't know if that's the prevailing opinion over there now, though? :)

I do think Jake would be flattered by some of the nicer and more well written stories about the heart of Brokeback's meaning, not the fawning stuff. :)

Anonymous said...

maybe she has more than one lj user name or something.

I wish I knew some of her aliases if she has any, or some of her cronies, so I could delete them from my fl. I do have it friends-locked. :(

Anonymous said...

Fuck you all, honestly, you know jack. Anything could have happened. We don't know these people.

Wow! Calm down, will you. Sorry, I don't believe Jake and Heath got it on during BBM filming. If they ever did it I would guess it was after Heath and Michelle called it quits and Jake pretty much went MIA for the summer/beginning of fall.

That said, if Heath really was heteroflexible or bi-curious and not 100% straight I think it's a lot more likely he screwed rentboys than he did Jake, I mean Jake was a friend. Why ruin that with sex?

Anonymous said...

The studio only gets about 50 percent of the box office, that means POP has taken in roughly 150 million--and needs another 150 just to break even.

That's right. So many people don't know this. I know over at DC forum someone keeps giving a daily tally and they keep saying that PoP is now making money. Not true. Also, they get even less from the foreign market, about 40%, and that's where PoP has made the majority of it's money. So PoP has actually taken in less than $150 mill.

Anonymous said...

They do take it a little too seriously I think. I almost felt that if you were a Heath fan, to them it meant you weren't a Jake fan. I'm a fan of both. I don't know if that's the prevailing opinion over there now, though? :)

A 'little' too seriously? lol. It's like life and death to some of them. And, yeah, sadly there was a lot of J versus H stuff over at DC and now it is basically run by lashers and babblers. Has been ever since they banned any JiG talk or inference.

Annie Proulx has been despairing over her bombardment with pornographic rewrites of Brokeback Mountain. But just what sort of thing is she receiving? Her howls ringing in my ears I decided to dip a toe into the murky waters of film fan fiction. A quick Google search brought up Godawful fan fiction - quite a site, if you have a minute. But it was Fanfiction.net's index page that brought home just how strange a phenomenon this is. 494 people have seen fit to develop the story of Oliver Stone's Alexander in their own words. More than 3,500 have waxed lyrical on the theme of the Jonas Brothers' classic Camp Rock. Two even felt inspired by Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

But it's gay cowboys we're here for, so without further ado here is my far from exhaustive top ten of Brokeback Mountain fan fiction, all of it guaranteed to make the author want to shoot the people responsible and ride off into the sunset.

1. Twist or the Sheep
"Kinda liked it, what we did. Felt right."
Showing a remarkable ability to get into the head of Ennis Del Mar, eric-idle-rules' gives us a concentrated burst of internal monologue that builds to a killer last line.

2. Jeans
"Everything about Jack and his jeans disturbed and tormented Ennis that summer of '63 until all he could think of or see was blue"
Brokeback's sartorial influence has often been overlooked, but in this ode to tight-fitting denim sweetcolumbine places cowboy couture back at the heart of the story.

3. The Lie Beneath the Postcard, chapter 28: One Soul, Two Bodies
"[He] kept taking Jack up to the end, when the (sic) both blew out on a six year climax"
This might be one of the ones Proulx had in mind. An epic in the making (28 chapters and counting) and packed with more sex and horses than a Jilly Cooper novel.

4. Ask, and Thou Shalt Recieve, chapter 8: You Checkin' Me Out, Cowboy?
" Jack wasn't bad at giving directions. He was awful."
Even more sprawling than The Lie Beneath the Postcard, and one of the few fan fictions to have spawned its own sequel (I Don't Want to Say Goodbye), this is trailed by the author with the tantalising line: "another one of those where Jack survives his attack ... but perhaps, it's not for long. Warnings: Rape"

5. The Chill Hour
"They painted beautiful, plunged creative. The kingfisher, silent, did not remove his belt."
A nice short one, this. Unfortunately it's quite difficult to know what's going on.

'Good mournin' to ya to cowboy' said...

6. Memories
"Good mournin' to ya to cowboy."
The fabulously named DracoPotterMalfoy-JackEnnisDelMar adds the ingredient all Brokeback Mountain afficionados have been crying out for. No, not gratuitous sex (although there will be some of that in the final draft, apparently), but amnesia.

7. Afraid to Love
"Your eyes are like the stars
Your touch is like the sun"
Like much of the first person work in the canon, this poem adopts Ennis' point of view as he weighs up the pros and cons of his relationship with Jack.

8. Beyond the Blue
"With their eyes closed, they shared an intimate moment of united longing, pain and beauty that would take a place in eternity"
Pitched by the author as a study of the effects of nature on repressed desire, it reads more like an excuse to write about Jack and Ennis having it off in a lake.

9. Deus ex Machina
"I didn't want out. I didn't want out. I didn't want out."
Featuring a bold reliance on repetition, the author claims inspiration came from a particularly heavy hail storm.

10. What Was Once Was and What Never Should Have Been
"Good he thought enough with your blabbering. For once he welcomed the quiet."
Undoubtedly the winner of my imaginary award for best title on a Brokeback Mountain piece of fan fiction, this mystifying look at the relationship between Ennis and his estranged son features an introduction from the author pre-emptively defending himself against accusations of plagiarism.

So there's my top ten. Now it's over to you to dig up even more jewels from this inexhaustible literary mine - or to write some of your own.

It seems as though our beautiful Gulf may be a pawn as we are in a much larger game that we didn't want to play. We are witnessing the end of one of the most beautiful places on Earth but also the END of the reign of oil hopefully and big oil and what it means in politics- don't you find it funny how much $ BP gave to our "beloved" Obama? I challenge all of us no matter if you are in elementary, middle or high school- college of grad school. Ask, inquire, learn, fight, and let's figure out how to tell our govt that the future is Green and bright not black and toxic. Why can't we work with oil companies to spend $ money to find alternatives let's do it. I bid you goodbye and good day. Thank you for your thoughts and support. Ian S

That is true, but higher standards cost money and higher costs make you less competitive so ...

I've heard that line before too. :-/

Companies become so greedy they drive themselves out of business by not thinking of future costs of their actions, but until then, what a cost to the area. :(

Plus I was just heartsick that a man from the Gulf was so despondent about what happened and his future, he took his own life.

People, there's always hope, always help, always someone to talk to if you feel like you make it. :(

That's why I was so happy that people are getting involved, like Ian, Austin, Sophia, Larry King, etc. Those people down there and the environment and wildlife are the important thing.

Costner cleanup device gets high marks from BP

It was treated as an oddball twist in the otherwise wrenching saga of the BP oil spill when Kevin Costner stepped forward to promote a device he said could work wonders in containing the spill's damage. But as Henry Fountain explains in the New York Times, the gadget in question — an oil-separating centrifuge — marks a major breakthrough in spill cleanup technology. And BP, after trial runs with the device, is ordering 32 more of the Costner-endorsed centrifuges to aid the Gulf cleanup.

The "Waterworld" actor has invested some $20 million and spent the past 15 years in developing the centrifuges. He helped found a manufacturing company, Ocean Therapy Solutions, to advance his brother's research in spill cleanup technology. In testimony before Congress this month, Costner walked through the device's operation—explaining how it spins oil-contaminated water at a rapid speed, so as to separate out the oil and capture it in a containment tank:

The device can purportedly take in thousands of gallons of oil-tainted water and remove up to 99% of the oil from it. On Thursday, BP posted to its YouTube page a video of the news conference featuring Costner and BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles announcing the news.

"Doug Suttles was the first guy to step up in the oil industry," Costner said at the presser, "and I'm really happy to say when he ordered 32 machines, it's a signal to the world, to the industry, where we need to be."

Suttles said the additional machines will be used to build four new deep-water systems: on two barges and two 280-foot supply boats.

"We tested it in some of the toughest environments we could find, and actually what it's done — it's quite robust," Suttles said. "This is real technology with real science behind it, and it's passed all of those tests." He added that Costner's device has proved effective at processing 128,000 barrels of water a day, which "can make a real difference to our spill response efforts."

In his congressional testimony, Costner recounted his struggle to effectively market the centrifuge. He explained that although the machines are quite effective, they can still leave trace amounts of oil in the treated water that exceeds current environmental regulations. Because of that regulatory hurdle, he said, he had great difficulty getting oil industry giants interested without first having the approval of the federal government.

It's true, as Fountain notes in the Times, that innovation on spill technology has been hobbled in part by the reach of federal regulation — though Fountain also notes that oil companies have elected to devote comparatively little money for researching cleanup devices in the intensely competitive industry.

Costner said that after the device was patented in 1993, he sought to overcome oil-company jitters by offering to allow U.S. oil concerns to use it on a trial basis. He'd extended the same offer to the Japanese government in 1997, he said, but got no takers there either.

I think it would be a hell of a lot better than what's being left in the water now! Good on Kevin, I'm glad somebody somewhere has an answer. It's sad that the oil companies themselves haven't devoted much time to spill recovery solutions.

I read that Jake Gyllenhaal turned down the Jake Sully role in Avatar to do Prince of Persia. Is this true, and if so, what the hell was he thinking?! James Cameron surely trumps any Disney film that doesn't have Johnny Depp making a poor script great!

Dear Baad Move:
Yep, it's true. Look, we love Jakey, but lately, the guy takes on movie roles that, quite frankly, suck. And trust, when you ask what the hell he was thinking, we're askin' the same thing, babe.

Dear Ted:
What do you think of Orlando Bloom's engagement?

Dear Shoulda Put a Ring on It:
I think it, and his decision to drop out of Pirates 4, is very Orlando Bloom.

Dear Ted:
Any updates on the Alexander Skarsgård-Kate Bosworth quasi-coupling? This is a few weeks old, but what do you make of him taking her home to Sweden? If it's all a PR sham, how long is it going to continue?

Dear PDAlex:
The two were supposed to show up together to a big event last week, but both of them basically bailed. Maybe they're toning down their appearances so as to, well...keep up appearances? Too much PR can be construed as just for PR, right?

Dear Ted:
Has Nevis Divine ever filmed a movie with Reese Witherspoon?

Dear Moviegoer:
I haven't seen one.

Dear Ted:
I absolutely love you for taking the time to write an article about what Sophia Bush and Austin Nichols have been doing regarding the Gulf Coast disaster. They've helped bring a lot of attention to the huge mess down there. I have family who live in New Orleans and there is a lot of devastation down there. Every time some sort of a disaster happens, people all over the Internet are always whining and complaining about how Hollywood should be helping and doing something instead of driving around in expensive cars and living in their big houses. Yet the second an actor or actress steps up to help, you have these same people complaining about how they're doing it solely for the wrong reason, which isn't always the case.
—Veracity

Dear Oozin' Compliments:
Thanks, V! Soph and Austin are doing great work, and it pains me to see folks thinking that they're doing it only for the publicity. Everything a celeb does is public, but that doesn't mean that that's all it was meant to be.

Multiply this by 32 devices and you have 4.1 million barrels of contaminated water per day processed and cleaned. A hundred devices would be about 128 million barrels of contaminated seawater per day. I don't think we should worry about any "trace" amounts left behind. Hello government and oil companies? Put your orders in now!

He [Costner] helped found a manufacturing company, Ocean Therapy Solutions, to advance his brother's research in spill cleanup technology.

Funny how things work out - but I'm glad it has. This could be of significant help to the area. :)

2 Dads, 7 Kids: Like The Brady Bunch, Only Homosexual said...

To realize his lifelong dream of fatherhood, 47-year-old Keith Kennard adopted three kids from Georgia's Independent Adoption Center (IAC). But while he enjoyed family life, having children didn't really help his chances of finding a mate. "That's not even an option when you have three kids," says Kennard. "Most men don't want to walk into a situation with a man who has three kids." At least that's what he thought until he met David Mayer, a single man with three sons and a daughter from a prior (hetero) relationship. Three years later, they began living under the same roof and raising their seven kids together — it's kinda like The Brady Bunch, only with two daddies.

Kennard, Mayer, and their seven kids live in Georgia, a state without any laws forbidding gay adoption. Hooray! Kennard opted for open adoptions, which will keep his kids in touch with their birth parents. He also chose to adopt African-American kids with health challenges, because he hated the seeing so many left waiting for a family.

Like Kay and Gail, the lesbian couple who adopted 9 kids, Mayer and Kennard say the joys of family life outweighs the costs. To balance their work as a security manager and nurse alongside the childrens' academics and participation in after-school sports and JROTC, they raise their seven kids on a very regimented schedule. All that's missing? Other gay dads to lean on for support.

"It's a chaotic day keeping up with kids and doctors appointments and just their daily lives," says Mayer. "[We] get dinner on the table, homework checked and have them in bed by 10 o'clock, and the day starts all over again. We don't get a lot of rest." In the fictional television version of their lives, they have live-in help. Go ask Alice.

Are you ready for Titanic 2?

How can you make a sequel to James Cameron’s Titanic? Wasn’t the first film based on actual events that included the demise of 95 percent of the ship’s passengers? The folks at The Asylum production company won’t let a crazy thing like historical facts keep them from making money with the release of their direct to DVD sequel, Titanic 2!

Asylum has a history of adapting well known titles and transforming them into campy knockoffs like The Terminators, Transmorphers, Snakes on a Train, Da Vinci Treasure, and Temple of the Skulls. Titanic 2 was written and directed by Shane Van Dyke and stars Bruce Davison, Brooke Burns, and Marie Westbrook. Here’s a brief synopsis of the film based on the boat that won’t to die…

On the 100th anniversary of the original voyage, a modern luxury liner christened “Titanic 2,” follows the path of its namesake. But when a tsunami hurls an ice berg into the new ship’s path, the passengers and crew must fight to avoid a similar fate.

Sorry but if you’re willingly get on a ship called the “Titanic 2″ you deserve to die a slow and horrible death. Not only is the film’s premise ridiculous but the cast is led by a former “Baywatch” babe (Burns) and the guy who played Senator Kelly (Davison) in the X-Men trilogy.

Would you give Titanic 2 the time of day?

Joan Rivers tells gay performers 'stay in the closet'

Joan Rivers has advice for young gay performers: Stay in the closet! "If you're going to be a romantic idol and try to get every teenage girl to love you, then you'd be an ass to come out and say you're gay," Rivers tells The Advocate. "Ricky Martin was so smart. He did what he did, made his millions and then he said, 'Guess what, every body? I'm gay . . . It didn't mat ter anymore because he didn't have to bring in 16-year-old girls." Rivers, who once played a lesbian in a show, said if she did it again, she'd pick daughter Melissa to play her love in terest, noting, "Let's really make it good." Or really weird.

Joan Rivers Better Work said...

Thanks to Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, rapt audiences are learning that there’s a lot more to Joan Rivers than E! red carpet critiques, QVC jewelry, and plastic surgery punch lines. The critically acclaimed documentary by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, which opened June 11 in select theaters, follows a rocky year in the life of and on the road with the caustic comedy icon, including her victory on Celebrity Apprentice last season. As the film expands into theaters nationwide, Rivers, who turned 77 earlier this month, kicks off a summer of intimate Manhattan club appearances with a special two-show gay pride edition June 24. Also host of TV Land’s How’d You Get So Rich? and star of the upcoming WE reality series Mother Knows Best with daughter Melissa, Rivers looks back at the lifetime of laughter and tears she’s shared with gay audiences.

The Advocate: Your documentary is officially a hit. Has the success gone straight to your head?
Joan Rivers: Well, I was always an egomaniac, but now it’s gone even further. It’s just so unexpected. We thought we were doing a nice little documentary about show business, age, and how difficult it all is. We took it to Sundance, thinking, Oh, maybe they won’t be snotty. But then it came back with prizes and everybody screaming. It’s been an amazing ride.

Q: I would’ve bet that a gay man would ultimately make a documentary about your life — not two women who, as you’ve noted in another interview, don’t wear makeup. How might the film have turned out with a gay man behind the camera?
A: It definitely would’ve dealt with different aspects of my life. There would’ve been more about the fashion and fun in my life, but Ricki and Annie went for how difficult it is. They came off of doing a documentary about Darfur, so they really didn’t give a damn that I’d met Judy Garland. I guess that means there’s room for another documentary.

Q: You’re performing a gay pride edition of your stand-up show tonight in New York for gay pride week.
A: I’m so excited. When I do a show, I usually say, “Where are my gays?” and I make sure they’re down front. Tonight I won’t have to say that.

Q: Are you pulling out some classic gay material from your card catalog of jokes we see in the documentary?
A: Oh, no. God knows what we’ll talk about, but you do want to give them a very strong show. They’re a great crowd, so you want to make sure they get the cream. You know, my first record album was called Mr. Phyllis & Other Funny Stories. I talked about my gay hairdresser, Mr. Phyllis, and that was very shocking in those days. Everybody went, “Oh, my God!” But that was a long time ago.

Q: Do you tread more cautiously than usual when crafting a gay joke to ensure it won’t offend your loyal gay audience? Because if we’ve learned nothing else, gay people can be as sensitive as they are good-humored.
A: Oh, please. Let’s calm down here. I talk to the audience like I talk to my friends, and that would be the one crowd I wouldn’t worry about. I expect them to get every single thing I say.

Joan Rivers Better Work said...

Q: You’ve had AIDS jokes in your act. That’s a pretty risky subject for comedy, no?
A: Why? Didn’t you see the documentary? That’s the whole point. Comedy is how you deal with things. If you can laugh at it, you can deal with it.

Q: Did you lose many friends to the AIDS crisis?
A: A lot, a lot, a lot. I was doing my talk show during part of that, and one day we did a big thing on AIDS. I said, “Let’s put up pictures of my friends who have died.” And it just didn’t stop. I was so upset, because you don’t realize how many you lost until you really start to line it up. It was awful. It was a death sentence back then. When someone called you up and said, “I have AIDS,” it was over. My hairdresser, Jason Dyl, was wild and crazy. The minute he heard about it, he said to me, “That’s the end for me.” And it was. We didn’t know what to do, how to treat it, so he used to put on rubber gloves to do my hair. It was a horrible, black time. Don’t get me started.

Q: Growing up in New York, what was your earliest exposure to gay people?
A: My mother had a very dear friend who was gay, but it just wasn’t talked about. When I got out of college, I was asked to come down to Lord & Taylor and help them change the windows on Thursday nights. I didn’t get any money for it, but it was a huge honor, because their windows were the most beautiful in New York and very noticed. I know it sounds stupid, but it was like being picked to be in the inner circle. Anyway, everyone down there was gay, and I had the best time. That began my lifelong affinity with gay people.

Q: Who was your first gay friend?
A: An amazing man named Dick Eastwood, who worked in the window display department at Lord & Taylor. We’d go through Lord & Taylor — he’d dress me up and send me out on dates in borrowed clothes.

Q: When did you first feel love from the gay community as a comic?
A: When I got into the business, I started working at night in all the clubs in Greenwich Village like the Duplex. There’d always be these little groups of tables of men that just got it more than the others, so I began to want to make them laugh more than the others. I didn’t seek it, and there was no plan; it was just a natural thing.

Q: Who’s the most important gay person in your life today?
A: A friend of mine who lives up in Connecticut. There’s one couple and two single men up there that I just adore. You know, Connecticut is the reverse of the Hamptons: You don’t dress up, you don’t wear makeup, and it’s very underplayed. So we’ll say things like, “I come up here to see nobody!” Then we all get together and have dinner.

Q: Fran Drescher recently said she’d been married to a gay man for 21 years. Have you ever unwittingly dated a gay man?
A: Well, I wittingly dated a gay man named Michael, who was a wonderful writer. We got very angry one night because somebody said to me, “Why are you going out with him? He’s gay.” So we said, “Let’s announce our engagement tonight.” We didn’t really date, but I was engaged to Michael for a while. I adored him, but we all knew, of course.

Q: It’s easy to fall for a gay friend.
A: It is easy, and there are also many gay men who have fallen in love with me. If you’re together long enough, there’s a moment in almost any friendship when you look at each other and go, “Well, maybe.” And then you go, “That’s stupid. This ain’t gonna last.”

Joan Rivers Better Work said...

Q: Like Betty White, who sort of outed Cary Grant on The Joy Behar Show last week, you’ve surely encountered some closeted celebrities through the years.
A: Yes. But it’s a business. If everyone had known that Cary Grant was gay, he wouldn’t have been the great romantic idol, and that would’ve been the end of his career. Same with Rock Hudson, who was a very good friend of mine. He had a partner named Tom for years, and when you invited Rock, you invited Tom — there was no question. But if the world had known, maybe they wouldn’t have wanted to see him make out with Jane Wyman. It makes sense, in a way. If you’re looking at someone who’s your idol, thinking that maybe one day they’ll come ring your doorbell, you don’t want to hear, “There’s no chance in hell, honey, but still buy a ticket to the movie.”

Q: Should young gay performers still keep their sexuality a secret?
A: It’s part of the game. If you’re going to be a romantic idol and try to get every teenage girl to love you, then you’d be an ass to come out and say you’re gay. That’s why Ricky Martin was so smart — he did what he did, he made his millions, and then he said, “Guess what, everybody? I’m gay, I’m having this life, and here are my children.” It didn’t matter anymore because he didn’t have to bring in 16-year-old girls.

Q: Since we’re getting into Newsweek territory here, did you buy Sean Hayes as a romantic lead in Promises, Promises?
A: I thought he was adorable. What’s there to buy? It’s a musical, for God’s sake. We already know the plot, we know they get together in the end, and there’s singing and dancing. What, we’re looking for reality here? It’s so stupid.

Q: What do you make of the cadre of female comics who have come out as lesbians later in their careers?
A: Well, with comedians it doesn’t mean a damn thing, because there’s not the same romantic thing involved there. No single guy ever had Ellen DeGeneres’s or Rosie O’Donnell’s picture up on the wall and thought, Maybe one day I’ll meet her and she’ll marry me. No one cares what a comedian is. All you’re thinking about is if they’re going to make you laugh.

Q: It’s not too late in life for you to come out, Joan.
A: I’ll probably do it right before my new show comes out. You should only come out when you need the publicity.

Joan Rivers Better Work said...

Q: Have you ever experimented with another woman?
A: I always liked men. I wish I could say, “Gee, there was this counselor ... ” But it never happened for me. Will it ever happen? Who knows? If Lily Tomlin had shown up with a ring, who knows what might’ve happened? But it would’ve had to be a big ring.

Q: In the late ’50s, you played a lesbian opposite Barbra Streisand in the off-off-Broadway play Driftwood. If you played another lesbian role today, whom would you want cast as your love interest?
A: My daughter Melissa. Let’s really make it good.

Q: Betty White’s too old for you?
A: And also not my type. She’s too Midwestern for me.

Q: Speaking of Betty, she’s starring in another sitcom at 88. After your reality show, Mother Knows Best, would you like to do a sitcom?
A: I’d love to do a real sitcom — or a movie. I’m hoping Meryl Streep will get sick somewhere along the line, just for a minute, so they’ll give me her part.

Q: You worked with Ryan Murphy when you played a fictionalized version of yourself on Nip/Tuck. Would you like to appear on Glee?
A: Ryan is a genius, so I’d do Glee in a second. Anyone who doesn’t want to go on the number 1 show is an idiot. I’ve only seen it once, so I don’t know what I’d play, but it would probably be somebody’s curmudgeon grandmother. I’d leave it to Ryan to come up with something clever. After all, he’s the one who came up with the idea of my wanting to go backwards on plastic surgery.

I'm sure that gay couples still go to private parties even in this day and age. Paps don't generally hang outside a celeb's home, especially at night. For starters, they have no way of knowing if the celeb is in town, when they'll come and go, etc. They're not going to do that--and for a photo suckups like People won't print anyway.

Also don't think the neighbors and fans are going to be standing there with their iphones either.

I think sadly she is right. Become beloved and then out yourself. NPH did that. I’m sure he has the $$ to do what he wants to do. He’s done Broadway, TV and movies. I think I’ve read that a lot of people are annoyed at him because they see him and know that they don’t generate the good will he has so they would have more issues succeeding after they announce it.

I do think as time goes by things will get better, but this country is too puritan and backward.

I know that during the last few years some urban schools the prom king and queens have been two males or two females. I know for a fact the two females were a couple and the two males were not a couple and the king was straight (the voting was not couple based).

My friend’s kid was at the prom this year when the two guys won. The King, to the delight of the queen, ask him to dance their expected formal slow dance. I saw the video. It was not treated as a joke, it was very sweet. After the dance the King went back to his girlfriend and the boy back to his boyfriend. I heard that no one made a rude comment and no one put up a fuss. There were a few "how cute they would be if they were a couple,” comments heard on the video. They did look adorable!

We get glimpses of it in gossip, books, interviews like Joan Rivers', etc. People in HW keep a lot of secrets, including who is really dating whom. The only way you're going to find out is if somebody blabs, and people who run in those circles are not likely to blab because they don't want people to do the same about them, and because they don't want become social pariahs.

And for Bomer to be in a very clear glass closet right from the get go with a brand new series, and with nobody knowing who the heck he was......

Adam Lambert is out from the beginning, and it has not stopped women from lusting after him.

If Jake talked about being marginalized in that interview if you're out, well, I may be in the minority, but I think Jake has done a pretty good job of doing that to his own career all while putting on a straight face for the public.

If you really think nobody ever does anything in private they don't want people to know about, including going to parties, I really don't think you understand how HW works.

Gay Hollywood closet is about $$$, not love, so I believe closeted gays want to please bigwigs and that includes not taking risks and keeping the number of people in the know to minimum.

Ted claims everyone in HW knows Toothy is gay, and seems like people on Dl and elsewhere have made the same claim about everyone knowing Jake is gay. So I hardly think Jake is taking steps to hide privately.

Have you actually read any of the books about gay Hollywood, like Tab Hunter's bio? Private parties where everything goes is the norm.

I'm sure Jake is doing his best to hide privately, it's part of the professional conduct in Hollywood.

I don't believe for a second that Jake and Austin attended Hollywood private parties together.

5:03 PM, what that has to do with confirming you are gay by attending a party with your boyfriend?

Anonymous said...

Huh? They just stay locked in a house all the time? What about parties that TDAT director Roland Emmerich or Bryan Singer or gay HW execs give (and you know damn well they have parties and dinner parties)? Gee when was the last time one of their parties, guest lists and/or quotes from attendees made it to the tabloids?

Anonymous said...

Exactly 5:03. Someone who is going to take a chance at hooking up with random strangers and rentboys is not going to avoid going to private HW parties with his boyfriend. The former is far more likely to leak out than the latter.

Not going to Hollywood private parties, but attending private parties with friends and family. But they aren't together anyway.

Not going to Hollywood private parties

LOL what's a "Hollywood private party"? Maybe to you it's stars galore but for individuals who work in Hollywood, like actors whose friends (and relatives) are also actors and directors and set designers, etc., it's just the people they know and hang out with.

Anonymous said...

Jake isn't friends with or relative to all important Hollywood people.

There are photos from the Roland Emmerich's party posted on Queerty - pool full of hot boys.

Since when? Parties = a lot of people + staff.

That's right, he's only a child of Hollywood with a director father, screenwriter mother, cinematographer uncle, actress sister, actor brother-in-law, etc. Jake wouldn't be friends or have relatives or know anyone important in Hollywood. No way would they be in the same social circle as him.

One annual party.

5:40 PM, are you saying that Jake doesn't care who KNOWS he's gay, and he would go to Hollywood private parties with Austin while bearding with the chin?

Hollywood private party

Maybe the poster who is arguing against Jake/Austin-whoever attending Hollywood private parties needs to give their definition of a Hollywood private party. I'm thinking of dinner parties of 6-12 attendees or celebration gatherings anywhere from 15-50 people in the industry (and the majority being couples), not a wild huge debauchery allowing invitees to bring unknown dates, i.e. outsiders not intimate with the group.

10-100 people.

I am not one of the ones arguing against Jake and Austin going to parties together, but that is how I meant private parties too. Not the big parties for show and to network, say like Tom Cruise's bash that Reeke was supposedly at.

So Roland Emmerich or Bryan Singer never have private parties?

Anonymous said...

6:00 #2 you make no sense.

Big party can be private, Roland Emmerich is famous for them!

Roland Emmerich is famous for big gay and private parties = private party can be for large number of people and without couples (see 5:51 PM).

Don’t rewrite history.

NPH started in 1998. Adults saw him as a sweet kid. So as an adult he is harmless. He acted in movies, but he does a lot of TV. NOt just his own, but guesting on many, many TV shows so he is out there (sorry for the pun).

He will do more movies, but he will never be a “Movie Star” but he is a TV star and Broadway Baby.

I think it is wonderful that he is out, but you are comparing apples to eggs. There is a difference between the top TV stars and Movie stars. (Things may change faster since now movie stars does not mean bankable stars.)

Right now, to be a movie star you need to look straight. To expect an actor stand up and lose their chance to star in movies is not realistic. Most actors that come out, come out when there “stud” parts are done with.

I really don’t understand the anger toward Jake and others like him. He isn’t suppose to fall on his sword you. He isn’t a politician. He doesn’t write rules that hurt other people.

NPH wasn’t going to come out, but he pushed. He didn’t hide who he was, but he didn’t yell it out.

I feel sad for those that don’t feel like they come out, not mad.

No, really?! Talk about nitpicking, 6:00 #2. I said the majority being couples - not the entirety. Sheesh. Also you talk about the famous big parties Roland and Bryan give but you're not going to hear about the intimate insiders-only ones - we only know about the parties that get publicized, period.

After all that shameless bearding from both of them, why should we belive that Jake and Austin attended any Hollywood private party together as a couple?

Dare I say there are a lot more gay bf and longterm/married/committed couples today than gay bathhouse one-night stand swinging orgy singles. Promiscuous gay guys I know who I never thought in a million years would be part of a couple are finding bfs, settling down or living together, in longterm relationships.

Roland Emmerich and Bryan Singer prefer single twinks.

LOL Hollywood knows and accepts that bearding is just one method out of many to steer the public's perception. Why would Jake or Austin shirk from private Hollywood social circles just because they are using a common industry PR tool on the outside consumer population?

^^Which means that Jake and/or Austin NEVER attend any Hollywood private parties. Your argument is flawless!

I've said it before, there is no reason to believe that Jake wants to admit his gayness to more people than necessary.
