Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Mike Newell:

'I’d known Jake for a long time because I’d known his parents and worked with his sister, but I’d never worked with him. His face is his fortune. He looks like he has one layer of skin fewer than anyone else; he’s tender and vulnerable in a way that a lot of people aren’t. But then he made himself into an action hero. I saw him do it, step by step. Of course the stunt man is there, because of insurance, but Jake did all his own riding, his own fighting, his own gymnastics. It’s something that you don’t see until you look at the whole movie and think: Christ, he actually did that. On the one hand he gave what I expected him to give, which is the sensitive actor stuff. But on the other, he really worked hard.'

Sir Ben Kingsley:

'Jake is a great leading man to work with - he's wonderful to work with because he makes himself vulnerable. For a strong young guy like that, not many of his American counterparts are vulnerable. They don't dare to be vulnerable because they think vulnerable is weak. It is not - to be vulnerable is to be very strong.'

Is that how Jake (and possibly Austin who's been known to ride scooters so motorcycles wouldn't be out of the question) gets around unnoticed?

How would motorcycle help that? You still have to park and take the helmet off.

What?! A bitch seat is the small area behind the motorcyclist where a passenger rides. IIRC it's from the Hell's Angels (who were men) and had their woman i.e. bitch, ride holding on in back of them. LOL to imagining Atticus riding behind Jake in the bitch seat.

I don't think it is Jake that is more popular overseas, but rather this kind of movie does better overseas. Same with Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood. Americans only seem to want to see action films set in the present or future--with the exception of 300, which really was just an exercise in violence and mayhem, and not a typical costume/period piece.

Is It So Terrible That Elton John Made $1 Million Performing for Rush Limbaugh? said...

Yesterday Rush Limbaugh married his now-fourth wife, Kathryn Rogers, in Palm Beach. Among the paid entertainment wowing guests? Elton John, who earned a reported $1 million to fete the homophobe's repeat nuptials. Should Elton be shamed for accepting the cash?
Yes.

There are reasonable things the LGBT community can do to disavow support for people who make a career out of gay baiting, and there are unreasonable things. The latter category could includes boycotting an entire mega-conglomerate corporation for an offensive television ad. The former category could include refusing to go to an Buju Banton concert, no matter how much you like his beats, because he calls for the murder of our people.

And that's where Elton's flaw is. He is directly supporting Mr. Limbaugh and his endeavors — his future happiness! — by agreeing to perform at the man's wedding. It will be Rush who writes out the check to Elton for the seven-figure sum; money that, let's all face, Elton doesn't really need. And even if his intention was to donate the cash to a LGBT youth group, it's already bloody money, and tainted.

We don't need to revisit Rush's entire history to remind you how he's used his radio show to taunt queer public officials, public citizens, and even families. For the same reason black NFL players weren't on board with Rush possibly purchasing; Rush is a race baiter.

Elton John doesn't have make it his day job avoiding second-handedly contributing to the lifestyles of bigots. If he accidentally tunes in to Rush's radio show, he needn't be burned at the stake. But Elton would be better respected if he didn't go out of his way to directly play a role in bettering the life of a man who's working vigorously to deny equality to queer Americans. Just like you can avoid ExxonMobil or BP gas stations because they're anti-gay or anti-environment, while still not bankrupting your soul by buying petrol.

Dear Ted:
You said around the time of New Moon that one of the castmembers would come out of the closet during Eclipse promotion time. Any clue if this is happening soon?
—Em

Dear Out of the Coffin:
You know how it is in H'wood: Star wants to burst out of the closet, but their people can talk them back into it in a second. Especially these megahuge Twi actors who have "their whole career" to think about. Perhaps once the Breaking Dawn flicks are in the can?

Dear Ted:
I understand that certainly not everywhere in the U.S. is as liberal-leaning as the two coasts, but I am gay, out, proud and born and raised in the Midwest. Initially, my family, while accepting, was not celebratory. But cut to six years later, and they hardly give it a second thought—they go to PFLAG meetings and even the pride parade with me! I think that the more these celebrities continue to fear and perpetuate the fact that gay is a taboo, the more the public is going to be obsessed with "outing." The more out and proud public figures there are, the more people (just like my family after I came out) are going to become desensitized to "the big, bad gay taboo" and it will eventually become a nonissue. Thoughts?
—Ethan

Dear True, True:
But no one wants to be the first. You're brave, and what a great heart you have, Ethan, thanks.

Dear Ted:
Why is it that so many mags can run such bogus stories (K.Stew preggers?) without trouble, but you have to cover up all your juicy gossip? Are lawyers really the issue, or are you just a big softy deep down after all? Oh, and has Jackson Rathbone been a Blind Vice?
—Joe

Dear Hello?
Because my Vices are true. Did you see where that K.Stew preggers story went? Exactly. And nope, Jackson hasn't been a Vice, though he should be.

Now is it really fair to bash all heteros for a minority of bad examples? Try to behave like an adult. Equal opportunity for marriage will come in time, and there's no need to waste so much energy on Rush Limbaugh. I'm amazed that there are even four women in the galaxy who would find him appealing enough to marry.

Anonymous said...

Now is it really fair to bash all heteros for a minority of bad examples?

I'm not being "fair/unfair" - just giving examples of some past major murders and how they were committed by straights. Look at the crime stories in today's headlines: Drew Peterson, Bruce Beresford, Van der Sloot....all are male and straight, accused of killing women. Like I said, gays aren't perfect but most murders are done to women by heterosexual males, while at the same time being gay is considered wrong. WTF?

Anonymous said...

Rush Limbaugh is VERY appealing!

"Rush Limbaugh is close to, or just over the billionaire net worth mark. With at least $685 million, and advertising revenue joined with previous contracts which must be in the hundreds-of-millions range, Rush can be assumed an essential billionaire."

“how can Austin's bearding help Jake?”

Every time the Jake is gay rumors start, Austin is mentioned and then someone come up with “They are not gay. Austin is dating Sophia” in the same way that they said “Jake is not gay. He dated oscar-winner Reese”. It sounds stupid and simple, but it’s incredible how it still works in the mind of the general public and fangirls. For example, we saw it recently with the babblers and in the comments of the latest pics on JJ,ONTD and the OTH sites when the gym pics appeared. Austin "dating" Sophia discredit the Jake is gay rumors in their minds, so he is covered and he doesn't need to beard. Just one of them bearding is enough.

Have you seen anything Amanda has been in? Honestly--I've seen her in several films, including her latest, Letters to Juliet where she co-stars with the Heath clone, Christopher Egan and honestly...she's very charming on screen and holds her own with Vanessa Redgrave. Not an easy feat. She also has headlined quite a few rom-coms that have done well. Letters to Juliet is still doing respectable biz--and Amanda has headlined Dear John, which did surprisingly well. The only film she did that didn't do well was Jennifer's Body--but that's probably because Megan Fox headlined it.

Amanda is quickly becoming the princess of the rom-com genre AND she can hold her own against folks like Meryl Streep and Redgrave.

This French interview - with the Cool Prince of Hollywood - is one of the best. You can see the scans over at IHJ.

Jake talks about turning down the role of Sully in Avatar in favour of Dastan: "When James and I discussed the project, I wasn't ready. In this business, if you don't listen to yourself, you're going to meet serious trouble. What made the Prince of Persia different is the humor. Dastan, my character is a hero who doesn't take himself seriously; he's funny and that's what I like about him. I had fun during this shoot, even if I spent over an hour and a half every morning putting my costume on, with thirty minutes just to tie my boots"

"I learned to keep my distance from all this [paparazzi attention], I know how to protect myself. The problem in my profession isn't the tabloid press. Moviemaking is a dangerous for your mental health if you're not honest with yourself. If you play a game, then sooner or later, you'll lose yourself. The hardest part for me is to be fair. I want to choose good stories, the roles that I really wanted, and, above all, give meaning to my life and make it meaningful to others. When one of my movies affects people, it's little, but that's something." It's an awful lot more than something, Jake.

On working with the delinquent youths for Brothers: "I remember a meeting with young people aged between 14 and 16 years. One of them read a poem aloud. He was so charismatic, so talented ... This experience touched me deeply. I know all the boys that I work with; I know what they did to get there and I understand their anger and sadness. These are feelings that I experienced at their age. I empathise with them because, ultimately, only a few kilometers separate the rich neighborhoods of Los Angeles and downtown, where they lived."

"During the filming of Jarhead Jamie Foxx tried to teach me chess. He taught me two key strokes, which, if I use them intelligently, lets me win the game. In the kitchen, it's much the same thing. I master a few techniques, but what counts is that I know what to do. I love going to the market, to see and touch the products; it gives me ideas. Being a good cook means to invent, be intuitive and not follow recipes to the letter."

Jake Gyllenhaal keeps up his fine figure at The Tracy Anderson Method Studios on Monday morning (June 7) in Studio City, Calif.

The Tracy Anderson Method is based on targeting the accessory muscles (the small muscle groups). Everybody from Gwyneth Paltrow to Madonnna uses it. Courteney Cox has said, “Tracy Anderson’s Method changes your body in a way that no other exercise can. You will see remarkable results…a feminine sexy body!”

150,000 Homosexuals Storm Disney World In Search of Tinkerbell said...

The red shirts came this year, like they have every year for the past two decades, and unsuspecting parents at Magic Kingdom and Epcot Center in Orlando, pushing their strollers and trying to remember if that's little Billy's second or third turkey leg, found themselves in the middle of an estimated 150,000 homos flocking to Disney World in search of Goofy, Mickey, and other 'mos.
While the annual Gay Days at Disney is thought to be just a weekend event, it's really nearly a week long. It began Tuesday, wrapped up yesterday, and in between stuffed in a business expo, a religious mass ceremony, pool parties, a film festival, drag pageants, comedy shows, and of course all the theme park trolling you could muster. (There's even special programming for drug and alcohol addicts in recovery.) Estimates put the economic contribution at $100,000,000, a figure that while suspiciously large and round still impresses.

And it wouldn't be gay days without the protesters. While the Florida Family Association this year advised heterosexual families to avoid Magic Kingdom at all costs, at least the Family Policy Network, based in Virgina, got into the celebratory spirit and flew an airplane banner over the festivities on Saturday morning that read "JESUS CHRIST: WWW.HOPEFORHOMOSEXUALS.COM." It's a regular contribution from the group, which each year yearns to turn Gay Days into "Hope Days."

Career Watch: Prince of Persia Setback for Rising Star Gyllenhaal said...

No question that summer disappointment Prince of Persia marks a rare setback for Jake Gyllenhaal. Critics assailed his attempt to carry a Jerry Bruckheimer sword-and-sandal action tentpole, but the actor remains on Hollywood’s list of go-to rising stars. Here’s a taste of my latest Inside Movies Career Watch column:

Biggest Problem: ‘Prince of Persia’ failed to open well—and didn’t change the popular perception of Gyllenhaal as a likable leading man best suited to naturalistic dramas. There’s still a sizable gap between the rising star’s acting bonafides and his ability to put butts in seats. While Gyllenhaal earned excellent reviews in recent dramas ‘Brothers,’ ‘Rendition’ and ‘Zodiac,’ the films disappointed at theater wickets. Major movie stars have a hint of danger about them; Gyllenhaal, who hits 30 in December, is one of many boyish American leading men who will earn needed gravitas as they age. No one had any trouble buying him as a well-muscled grunt with a shaved head in the realistic Gulf War drama ‘Jarhead,’ but audiences did resist him in breastplate and leather in a big-budget Disney studio sword-and-scandal flick. Male action stars tend to appeal to men, while Gyllenhaal’s primary fan-base is female.

Next Step: It doesn’t look like we’re going to see David O. Russell’s long-on-the-shelf ‘Nailed’ anytime soon, which co-stars Jessica Biel and Catherine Keener. Embattled financeer David Bergstein’s money woes have left the film gathering dust with a crucial scene still left to film. Gyllenhaal has completed Ed Zwick’s romantic comedy ‘Love and Other Drugs’ (November 24), playing a Viagra salesman in 1995 who falls for Anne Hathaway (‘Brokeback Mountain’) as well as Duncan Jones’ spy thriller ‘Source Code,’ in which Vera Farmiga sends him traveling through time. Michelle Monaghan co-stars in the film, which is due in 2011.

my latest Inside Movies Career Watch column

Biggest Assets: A gifted actor with impressive range, Gyllenhaal has more options than ever. While 'Prince of Persia' was a setback for him, he may have moved the needle slightly. In the movie, he is charming, sexy and physical (with a boost from stuntmen and digital effects) in the role of a wily, athletic young prince who is scooped off the street as a kid by a kindly king. And he even manages a Cockney accent amid an ensemble of Brits. All it took for Matt Damon to become a matinee idol was the 'Bourne' franchise -- which suddenly revealed him as an athletic, dangerous action star. And Hugh Jackman was just a song-and-dance man before he took on Wolverine in the 'X-Men' franchise. "It's about the right person in the right role at the right time," says one studio casting director, who points out that it took Tom Cruise fifteen years to turn into the star of 'Mission: Impossible.'

Career Advice: Look for great material with directors you respect, and don't abandon the indies for studio paydays. "Find parts that ask you to show things to audiences you haven't seen before," adds the casting director. "It's not about one movie. He's in for a body of work over the long run." So far, Gyllenhaal has chosen fairly well, without falling prey to godawful studio formula fare. I like the idea of him playing middle-aged Joe Boyd, who sells his soul to the devil to become a young baseball slugger in 'Damn Yankees,' a great musical with an emotional kick. (Gyllenhaal studied singing when he tried out for 'Moulin Rouge.') And Joe Namath has approved his casting as Broadway Joe, the great New York Jets football star, which Gyllenhaal wants to be "bad-ass," he told MTV, "so it's taken a little while. I'm committed."

Idk, I like this guy now.

I am a black man from Memphis Tennessee who grew up in the south where I faced discrimination my whole life. I know very well how it feels for someone to judge you for something you have no control over so having gone through that I know how it feels. I took a vow that I didn't even have to say that I would never discriminate against anybody for anything other that how they treat me or others around them. So not only DO I NOT HATE gay people, I actually accept them for who and what they are. They always seem happy and most of them I met are very kind and nice individuals. Yes, and like most straight guys I joke around with the whole gay thing and I see it as comedy, not saying that's right or wrong but I don't do it out of hate.

Being a sports figure I attract a lot of male attention wherever I go and MOST straight fans act GAYER than any guys that was at this gay bar that I visited my homegirl at. When I'm in the club guys always offer to buy me drinks, do the prom date picture, stare at me, try to get my attention, tries to dance with me...

Finding a new beard for Jake is tricky. Hes used to being dominated by women. First his sister and mother. Then Kirsten and Reese. That does not help in the effort to make him look butch. He looks more masculine with another man than with a woman. On at least equal footing with men. In most cases holding the upper hand with his charm and flirty ways. Men are putty in his hands.

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet since I can't watch videos at work, but Mike White and Justin Long have made a short video in support of gay marriage, with Tom Arnold thrown in the mix too.

DL gossip:

Justin Long is gay and has a long term boyfriend. My sister lives next door to him, and he has shared his house with his boyfriend for many years. The bf is uber-jealous and hyper protective, as my sister witnessed when Justin had a conversation with her boyfriend (who is hot) Justin's bf angrily called him into the house. Justin doesn't sleep around, to my sister's knowledge, as the bf keeps a very short and tight leash. She's friendly with him.

Drew is a very good friend of his, and willingly beards for him. They have never slept together. The only kiss you'll ever see between them is a set up publicity shot or in a movie. You can see in their movies they have nothing but friend chemistry.

In the fight for equality, sometimes we can get so wrapped up in the present that we forget that this struggle has been going on for decades --- and that those who have been speaking out on our behalf for many years have made possible the current level of societal acceptance of LGBT people.

There are few other individuals who have been such unabashed advocates for equality as Ms. Barbra Streisand, who has been at the forefront of the fight for her entire career. Recently Ms. Streisand was gracious enough to give a bit of her time to answer some questions for MatthewsPlace.com. We send her our sincere thanks for her compassion, generosity and candor. The world is a safer place because of her voice.

MP: In our work with young people, we often encounter folks who are consistently bullied in school and don't feel that anyone cares or even acknowledges what they are going through. Have you ever been picked on for something that made you different, and if so, what impact did those experiences have in making you the person you are today?

BS: When I was about 13 years old, I had my own style and kids made fun of me for the makeup I wore and the way I colored my hair. And when I was older and had established a career as a successful actress, I wasn't allowed to live in a particular apartment building in New York because I was either Jewish or in the entertainment industry. It was a horrible feeling. I could finally afford to buy an apartment in New York and I had recommendation letters from the mayor of [New York City] and the governor of [New York], but they still wouldn't let me purchase property in the building. I think those experiences made me sensitive to people who aren't always included in the mainstream. I am always conscious to recognize and empathize with those who have been marginalized, ignored, discriminated against, or bullied for being different.

Barbra Streisand said...

MP: You've had such a remarkable career over many decades in film and music. Have you seen changes over that time period in the role LGBT people play in the entertainment industry, or in their ability to be open about themselves in the workplace?

BS: I think some of the most creative, talented and innovative people in our industry come from the LGBT community. But we do have a long way to go in terms of making it comfortable and safe for gays and lesbians in the industry to be open and honest about who they are. There is still fear that being "out" in Hollywood could compromise an actor's career by affecting the kinds of roles or opportunities he or she is offered. But in acknowledging that reality, I do believe that we are moving forward and starting to break through the stereotypes and stigmas that once really inhibited actors from being true to themselves and having a successful career in the business. I look forward to the day when people are hired because they are the best person for the job and are not excluded from opportunities because of their sexual preference, gender, or ethnicity.

MP: You have been a consistent advocate for equality throughout your career. In our work at the Foundation we are beginning to see a rise in the ally voice among young people. What role do you see their voice playing in the equality movement?

BS: I don't think many people would argue that LGBT equality is the civil rights fight of this generation. Young people today are far more open-minded about the issue than the older generation. The notion that gay people deserve the same rights as heterosexual people in marriage, the military, the workplace, etc., seems to be so obvious, yet the struggle continues. But this generation believes and understands that these rights should be available to all people, not just a privileged few. It's one of the major issues today where young people have found a common voice to rally behind, just as the civil rights movement was a unifying cause for my generation. This push for equality has created a new generation of activists, and I think that's wonderful.

Her son with Elliott Gould is gay, right?

Yes.

About 1991, tabloids outed Jason Gould as being gay. In an interview with The Advocate published August 17, 1999, Barbra Streisand said:

'I would never wish for my son to be anything but what he is. He is bright, kind, sensitive, caring, and a very conscientious and good person. He is a very gifted actor and filmmaker. What more could a parent ask for in their child? I have been truly blessed. Most parents feel that their child is particularly special, and I am no different. I have a wonderful son. My only wish for my son, Jason, is that he continues to experience a rich life of love, happiness, joy, and fulfillment, both creatively and personally.

Nobody on this earth has the right to tell anyone that their love for another human being is morally wrong. I will never forget how it made me shudder to hear Pat Buchanan say that he stood 'with George Bush against the immoral idea that gay and lesbian couples should have the same standing in law as married men and women.' Who is Pat Buchanan to pronounce anyone's love invalid? How can he deny the profound love felt by one human being for another? ... Unfortunately, however, as long as people like Newt Gingrich and Pat Buchanan continue in public life, the fight to codify gay marriages will be a tough battle to win.'

Go Behind The Scenes On Inception

Tuesday June 8, 2010

Christopher Nolan and Leonardo Di Caprio talk about their new film

Yahoo have posted a behind the scenes featurette for Inception in which its star, Leonardo DiCaprio's and director Christopher Nolan's speak about making the film.

Nolan seems keen to stress the 'reality' of the dreamworld he's created for the film which couldn't help but remind us that much of the enormous budget was spent on creating effects with minimal use of CGI, most notably (so far) the amazing moment in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt is seen fighting in a rotating corridor, an enormous hamster's wheel that you catch a glimpse of in the background as the director watches the footage on a monitor.

There's not really that much new here, nor anything we haven't heard before but we're so rabidly excited about this release (which is very soon now) we'll take anything we can get.
