Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Mike Newell:

'I’d known Jake for a long time because I’d known his parents and worked with his sister, but I’d never worked with him. His face is his fortune. He looks like he has one layer of skin fewer than anyone else; he’s tender and vulnerable in a way that a lot of people aren’t. But then he made himself into an action hero. I saw him do it, step by step. Of course the stunt man is there, because of insurance, but Jake did all his own riding, his own fighting, his own gymnastics. It’s something that you don’t see until you look at the whole movie and think: Christ, he actually did that. On the one hand he gave what I expected him to give, which is the sensitive actor stuff. But on the other, he really worked hard.'

Sir Ben Kingsley:

'Jake is a great leading man to work with - he's wonderful to work with because he makes himself vulnerable. For a strong young guy like that, not many of his American counterparts are vulnerable. They don't dare to be vulnerable because they think vulnerable is weak. It is not - to be vulnerable is to be very strong.'

SATC2: Not really. Big gets hit on at Stanford and Anthony's wedding.
POP: Definitely! How about a shirtless Jake wrestling another hottie! Lot's of men hugging after battles!
Which is more gay? POP for the win!

I still LOL about Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs taking number 1 two weeks in a row last year, against bigger names.

  6. Dear Ted:
OK, I know you claim that very high numbers of Hollywood stars are gay. So I think I have five who are completely straight. Joel McHale, Ryan Gosling, John Krasinski, Patrick Dempsey and Jimmy Kimmel. I know they all work in very different areas of Hollywood but it was all I could think of. Am I right?
    —Gale

    Dear Pretty on the Money:
    Almost.

    Dear Ted:
Why did Sophia Bush say that she's been dating Austin Nichols for four years? She forgot that she had two long-term boyfriends during that time, actors Jon Foster and James Lafferty, and that this statement contradicts what she said about Austin in the past. Don't you think it's interesting that she created this particular dating timeline and that she strategically chose E! to talk about it?
    —Reggie

    Dear Coincidences:
Hey, you're sayin' it, not me! But yes, the timeline is more than fishy.

    Dear Ted:
First, I really, super don't get the big deal about celebs being out. I've had a crush on Neil Patrick Harris since I was 5, and his sexuality doesn't change that. I still adore him, because all Hollywood is, is fantasy. Allowing a star's personal life disrupt your suspension of disbelief shows a complete lack of imagination, in my opinion. Besides, it's not like I have a shot with Johnny Depp, either.

    Dear Letter of the Day:
It's probably because you know how to keep a little reality with your gossip. Most people do not. As you said, Hollywood is a fantasy. Too many people sit unhappy in their lives and dream of being rescued by Mr. Right. Mr. Right can't be homolicious for these women (and men).

  15. But the real auteur here is producer Jerry Bruckheimer. As the man behind Pirates of the Caribbean, Bruckheimer specializes in family-friendly popcorn movies that sport complicated plot lines braided around simple themes. Adhering to formula, Prince of Persia serves up plenty of action, ponderous backstory, exotic locales and a dash of chaste romance. What’s missing is memorable dialogue and the sense that anything depicted on screen could actually happen.

In one arena, Prince does manage a fresh twist on 21st-century action cinema: Each time Gyllenhaal scales fortress walls or bounds across rooftops, it’s a wonder to behold. Trained in Parkour, the French discipline devoted to overcoming physical obstacles through sheer human strength, Gyllenhaal performs most of his own stunts. He deserves an A for Leaping.

  18. Review in a Hurry: A video game-turned-summer-movie (and soon a theme-park ride, no doubt), this adequately entertaining popcorn pic pits the titular prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) against a villain in pursuit of a mystical, time-reversing dagger. PoP packs in eye-popping action but could've used a little more swash in its buckle.

  19. "Prince of Persia" may serve as testing ground for the star power and banakability of Gyllenhaal—it may be the first flick whose succcess really depends on his shoulders. Pumped-up from extensive gym work, sporting a strangely-looking long hair (which makes him look like a rock star), and essaying a British accent semi-successfully, Gyllenhaal somehow manages to wear the period costumes convinceingly, and move elegantly enough to attract the attention of young boys with jumps over steep roofs or plunges into deep waters.

Anachronistic dialogue, and references to current politics, specifically the Iraq War and weapons of mass destruction, threaten to turn the saga into an undefinable mismash, a hodge-podge of a movie. We learn that the villains have tricked the Persian Army into invading the city of Alamut, claiming that its denizens have presumbaly smuggled weapons of destruction to Persia's enemies.

However, since the whole thing is not meant to be taken too seriously, there is no chance that the film would become provocative or objectionable in any way to members of its primary target audience--young children.

As noted, the film's computer game origins are all too evident in the calculated insertion of the battles and the action scenes. All the elements build up to the the anticipated climax, a rousing showdown between Dastan and his enemies, during which the children seated next to me at the screening were on their feet, screaming and cheering.

An old-fashioned, innocuous tale, "Prince of Persia" is played in a serio manner (with straight faces), without any signs of the retro cool or campy humor that often mark much fare, as was the case of "The Pirates" franchise, particularly Johnny Depp's performance.

  36. Morocco gives Elton John a rapturous welcomeMay 28, 2010 12:33 pm

Singer Elton John defied hostile Islamists to headline Morocco's biggest music festival on Wednesday night and received a rapturous welcome from a crowd of thousands.

Politicians from the opposition Islamist PJD party said the gay British star was not welcome in the conservative north African kingdom and that granting him such a profile would tarnish Morocco's image. Organisers said the singer's private life was irrelevant and went ahead with the show, the highlight of the week-long Mawazine World Rhythms festival that has become the cultural showpiece of Morocco's secular-leaning monarchy.

Mounted police and dozens of security staff were on duty but there was no hint of any disturbances or protests, and the performer himself made no mention of the dispute surrounding his presence in Morocco.

"God bless you all... God bless Morocco," the singer said as the concert, lasting almost three hours, wound down.

  40. I never had much hope for PoP and often thought Jake made a mistake doing the movie. But I've watched it and it really is one of the better summer popcorn flicks. The reviews from critics are way too harsh and it deserves better b.o. results. PoP will be an undeserved turkey. Jake is a good looking, charming man and very solid actor, but he just CAN NOT draw an audience. I wonder why?

    ReplyDelete
  41. The most pretentious review was the one from The New Yorker, spewing its sanctimonious Orientalist crap. It's a movie geared to kids and families, ffs, that harkens back to the Douglas Fairbanks/Erroll Flynn days. There's no need to judge it so harshly, or to try to make it about politics.

  45. With all the hype for Prince of Persia this week, I thought I would do something a little different. Back in February, I stumbled upon a GQ photo shoot in Times Square with Jake Gyllenhall. I filmed about 20-seconds of video with my Canon 7D before switching over to stills. I forgot about the video until this week. After all, what can you do with just 20-seconds? It turns out, quite a bit.

  47. If POP doesn't do well I suspect Jerry will come in for most of the criticism. I wouldn't be surprised to see a "is he losing the magic touch" article, since this comes after a couple of other films that didn't do well for him at the box office.

Regarding Jake as a draw, I think increasingly it's the movie and the story that brings them in, and that the lead is secondary. That being said, I don't think Jake did himself any favors by Reeking because it killed off a lot of the interest there was in him, and people moved on to other stars.

He spent all those years in baggy flannel shirts, caps, etc., often looking like a suburban stepdad, but then we're supposed to magically flock to the movies to see his chest. Talk about a mixed message.

Says in the article that Heath's death and the "relationship" with the chin are off-limits. I think both topics were forbidden during the Brothers promo, too.

I get why Jake doesn't want to lie any more about Reeke (thank God for that!) but why won't he talk about Heath's death? I doubt it's because it's too difficult for him. It's been 2 years, even Heath's family talked about it. Jake is just being weird imo.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Even if PoP flops I'm sure Jake's career will be fine. He's not cut out to be an action hero anyway. Still, my fingers are crossed.

    ReplyDelete
  50. destiny, ITA with all the points you made. PoP may end up doing doing well - but if it doesn't meet expectations, I don't think the blame will fall on Jake. Especially since most of the negative reviews don't focus on him or his performance (in fact, many of the critics point out that Jake is too good an actor for such a bad script). Moviegoers (except for strict fangirls/boys) have pretty much moved past the movie idol phase and just want a good movie regardless of the cast.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Jake may have put Heath off limits because he had an exlusive deal with GQ to talk about him. A magazine can sell more copies if it is the only one with the story, and GQ certainly got a lot of attention from Jake talking about Heath.

I think people, especially the younger audience the movie is targeted at, spends far more time online than they do reading MSM, which is why MSM is in so much trouble. The idea is to get those internet readers who would not normally look at GQ to either pick up a copy or visit their website.

And while it is not main stream, I'd certainly consider Huffington Post, which gets millions of hits a month, a big deal, and they certainly had a post up on their main page linking to a story about the GQ interview.

  60. GQ certainly got a lot of attention from Jake talking about Heath.

Why would the younger audience (fangirls, gamers, etc) be interested in what Jake says about Heath? You think they would buy GQ for that? They either buy it because they're interested in Jake and/or PoP or they don't buy it at all.

  64. Bad Box Office Omens for ‘Prince of Persia’

Disney’s “Prince” is starting to look like a pauper.

Heading into the Memorial Day weekend, the prospects in North America for Walt Disney Company’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” appear grim. Surveys that track audience interest predict that the picture will open to about $40 million in ticket sales – not good for a movie that cost about $200 million to make and carried a global marketing budget of more than $100 million.

The picture, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, was released in 19 foreign markets last weekend and only managed $18 million. The movie was No. 1 in markets like Spain, Germany and Italy but failed to grab the top slot in the United Kingdom.

Another ominous sign: Fandango, the dominant online ticketing service, on Thursday said that “Prince of Persia” has comprised just 1 percent of advance ticket sales in recent days. “Sex and the City 2,” the other major release for Memorial Day, has comprised over 80 percent of sales.

It’s not entirely unusual for a new movie, even one based on a popular video game (as “Prince” is), to garner soft advance sales. Disney says it’s proud of the movie and optimistic about its fortunes, particularly as it rolls out internationally. Sales in the U.K. – where unseasonably warm weather likely dented interest last weekend – have been rising steadily in recent days.

And horrid reviews for “Sex and the City 2” could funnel some business Disney’s way. (To give you an idea of how much critics hate this movie, the review aggregation site RottenTomatoes.com ranks substantially below “Magruber.”) Then again, Fandango said that 79 percent of people buying tickets to “Sex and the City 2” say critics will have no impact on their decision to see it.

  67. I have to admit to POP promo fatigue, but I don't recall him talking about Heath in the things I saw. But in any case, I meant exclusive deal with a magazine, not other forms of media.

And I said maybe that was why, I know people do give exclusives that way, but there could be other reasons. Could also be that they didn't feel it was the appropriate forum--if it is really just one page, they didn't want Jake's discussion of Heath to just be a soundbite or a downer if they were going for fluff. Of course it happens but it’s highly unlikely in this case. Think about it for a second, GQ wouldn't sell more copies if Elle or any other publication didn't print a quote about Heath from Jake a month after their issue came out. Plus, the "exclusive" wasn't something many people would buy the mag for, like 2:53 PM already said.

Could also be that they didn't feel it was the appropriate forum--if it is really just one page, they didn't want Jake's discussion of Heath to just be a soundbite or a downer if they were going for fluff.

They, you mean the Elle interviewer/mag? If they felt it inappropriate why even ask/think about asking Jake about him at all, because they were clearly interested in the subject otherwise they wouldn’t have mentioned that Heath was a no topic.

LA TIMES: 'Prince of Persia' may not get a royal welcome

The big-screen adaptation of the video game could be the third consecutive big-budget disappointment. It's expected to trail 'Sex and the City 2' and 'Shrek Forever After' at the box office, according to people who have seen pre-release audience surveys.

The three films are expected to divide up the moviegoing audience, with women most interested in "Sex and the City 2," men in "Prince of Persia" and families in "Shrek."

It appears that "Persia" won't draw enough men, however, to make a good return on its hefty production budget of about $200 million. Several Hollywood executives who have seen tracking surveys estimated that the movie would sell $35 million to $40 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada from Friday through Monday.

  100. One of the key elements of a big star is having command of the screen. Heath had it. Johnny Depp has it in spades. For whatever reason, when they are on the movie screen, you cant take your eyes off them and everything else fades into the background. Jake does not have it. He blends into the scene. He is still a good actor, but like many actors, this keeps him from being a mega star, like he wants. On the other hand, he killed on SNL and he killed on Kimmel. He does command the TV screen. He needs to follow George Clooney's example and do TV. Star in some good show and let it make him a big star, then go back to movies. George had the same problem, he does not command the movie screen but he let ER propel him to fame, then went back to movies and the superfame stayed with him.

Whatever the relationship with R he had to have one with the kids. I think it was a polite way to say that he had to be careful with the relationship because they do have a father. I think that it was nice to say that.

I want to see PoP this weekend. I’m going to grab some younger cousins and go. We usually see at least 2 (sometimes 3) movies over the memorial weekend. I will not see sex in the city and I have not met a person who wants to see that.

  103. I'd compare Jake to Brad Pitt. He's solid as an actor, but needs a really good movie to be noticed.
Depp is a great actor who carried the complete mediocrity that was POTC, otherwise the movie would have been a complete failure.

Didn't Jake used to be much better in his early years? Like in October Sky, DD, The Good Girl, BBM. What happened with his acting after BBM? Did he become lazy? Zodiac was well received by critics, but Ruffalo and RDJ overshadowed him.

The nice and respectful thing to say would've been something like- "Well, they have a father, but it was an (honor, pleasure, whatever word you want) to spend time with them." Because let's get real, the kids aren't going to get more attached to mom's "friend" than they are to their own dad.

This is true. Depp was the only good thing about POTC, imo.

  106. 61.9% of box office mojo members gave the movie an A and 16.8% gave it a B.

That is very good. This movie may have legs from word of mouth. If the stunts are good people will see it again and again.

    Sex got 35.6% A and 45.5% got a F!

In other news, I think that it is funny that Israel has a higher box office for PoP than many other countries.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Whatever the relationship with R he had to have one with the kids.

Doing occasional photo op was hardly a relationship worth mentioning. And since Witherbeard talk was off limits I'm sure Jake didn't mention beard's kids in that Elle interview.

  108. 5:43 PM, Heath had so much bad luck with movies. He has always been so good and gave his all in each role, but most of his movies were mediocre to bad. Jake said Heath used to work with directors multiple times even though he knew the movies are going to be bad. Then BBM came out and everyone was like "we didn't know Heath was such a good actor". Give me a break. He just wasn't lucky to be in many good films before BBM. Pre BBM Heath did LODT and he was amazing in it, he sounded and acted just like the real Skip. He was so underrated. After BBM and TDK he would have been almost as big as Depp.

IMO when he was with them he probably did stand in for the kids as a parent figure but not because Ryan was absent but because the Chin was, emotionally. Look at her in pics - she used those kids as PR props and held their hands so tight like they were prisoners to be dragged around. Nine times out of ten Ava looks unhappy, detached and sad when she's with Reese, Deacon is too young to be aware yet but he will. And that's when they're with their mother, when she's not out shopping or doing PR pap pics for Just Jared. What's worse, a physically absent parent or one who's present but self-involved and uses them for self-promotion? Idk. But with a cold, domineering, user mother like that I would turn to someone else who was kind to me to be a friend and an adult figure. I think for Ava and Deacon, it was a relief to have Jake around even for short pap shoots; he probably paid attention to them and appreciated them, not saw them in terms of what they could offer in PR and image. He must have been a breath of fresh air, a welcome temporary sanctuary from the narcissist mother from hell.

With Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Walt Disney Pictures and producer Jerry Bruckheimer appear to be trying to recreate the success of Pirates of the Caribbean, even releasing it on the same weekend that At World's End inhabited in 2007 and inserting the critics' quotes inside the action in some ads, just like the first Pirates. Aside from that and some vague swashbuckling, the video game adaptation bears little resemblance commercially to Pirates.

Prince of Persia's Arabian fantasy premise is rather distancing and unrelatable to audiences, and Jake Gyllenhaal is no Johnny Depp. Worst of all, the marketing has been incoherent, both in terms of story and visually, and it has lacked any wow moments of character or spectacle. Gyllenhaal's attempts at repartee have been drowned out in the blurry nonsense.

With its sandy, supernatural action, Prince of Persia recalls the recent Mummy movies, but it lacks a villain in its marketing like those pictures had. In Box Office Mojo's reader polling, Prince of Persia's scoring pattern was most comparable to The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, albeit slightly higher. That picture's first weekend was $40.5 million.

Another curiosity about the Prince of Persia marketing is how the release date, May 28, took precedence over the movie itself. Bus ads and billboards sold "May 28" in giant type, while the movie title and images were a fraction of its size.

Jake does not have it. He blends into the scene. He is still a good actor, but like many actors, this keeps him from being a mega star, like he wants. On the other hand, he killed on SNL and he killed on Kimmel. He does command the TV screen.

I don't think blending in is always a bad thing. As much as I love Depp and RDJ, you never forget it is them, and unless it's a movie like Iron Man or Pirates, I think it can be distracting. I loved Jake in Zodiac, I know a lot of people don't feel that way, but I think he was perfect, and certainly the NYT gave him a rave for his performance. Even though I didn't think the movie was good, I thought he was really good in Brothers. I think it actually takes a lot of skill to be a quiet actor instead of a showy one, and the showy ones often end up being parodies of themselves. Cage being a prime example.

I think Jake comes off better on television because he's doing comedy, and gets to cut loose, not to mention singing and dancing. Bubble Boy is the only comedy released to date, and I think he is great in that.

ITA. Depp maybe not as much, but I think it's a consequence of becoming a big stah. Don't get me started on someone who becomes a character so much that he was barely recognizable (but his first initial is "H" and his last initial is "L").
