Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Mike Newell:

'I’d known Jake for a long time because I’d known his parents and worked with his sister, but I’d never worked with him. His face is his fortune. He looks like he has one layer of skin fewer than anyone else; he’s tender and vulnerable in a way that a lot of people aren’t. But then he made himself into an action hero. I saw him do it, step by step. Of course the stunt man is there, because of insurance, but Jake did all his own riding, his own fighting, his own gymnastics. It’s something that you don’t see until you look at the whole movie and think: Christ, he actually did that. On the one hand he gave what I expected him to give, which is the sensitive actor stuff. But on the other, he really worked hard.'

Sir Ben Kingsley:

'Jake is a great leading man to work with - he's wonderful to work with because he makes himself vulnerable. For a strong young guy like that, not many of his American counterparts are vulnerable. They don't dare to be vulnerable because they think vulnerable is weak. It is not - to be vulnerable is to be very strong.'

One of Jake's sexiest roles was Hal in Proof, in that love scene. I think that Gwyneth's character was the one who was holding back and uptight, part of her character's makeup.

Anonymous said...

If you watch it, give us feedback and if you still think Gemma and Jake had bad chemistry.

I will watch it, but Dastan and Tamina from PoP trailers made me cringe.

Anonymous said...

Actually, I liked Gwyneth in that scene too - she was wonderful as Catherine.

Anonymous said...

I prefer the scene with Aniston ;)

Anonymous said...

That one was great too. :)

Anonymous said...

I'd say all of his love scenes have been pretty realistic portrayals, and I'm a straight woman. :)

Then there was the ones in Rendition *swoon* and Zodiac where he was an adorable geek. All different aspects of different relationships, which were believable to me. Who you love in your personal life makes no difference, and it's not all that different anyway. It's certainly translatable. :)

LOL, our trolly couldn't wait to jump all over Ted in the comments:

Ted, you old, dried up meth queen, stop lying, you never saw Prince of Persia. I hear you are not allowed out of your cage, LOL!!! Don't blame Reese for this you silly, queen, Jake has wanted to do a film like this for ages, something your drug-addled brain wouldn't know. BTW, it doesn't suck and it is doing a lot better than thought, but you Bibby suck moose balls among other things.

"By the way, Disney (which owns ABC and ESPN, who broadcast many of the NBA playoff games) pulled off one of the most shameless movie plugs in recent history, when ESPN's otherwise super professional sideline reporter Doris Burke was forced, "hopefully under duress," as my colleague Mark Heisler put it over the weekend, to interview Jake Gyllenhaal during Game 3 of the Celtics-Magic series. Since the willowy Gyllenhaal is clearly not a major basketball fan, it was pretty obvious that he got all the free airtime to plug Disney's "Prince of Persia," which he called "a huge, big, epic, action, comedic, romantic movie." That piece of puffery came right after Gyllenhaal admitted that he was, ahem, rooting for both the Celtics and the Lakers, something you could say only if you were a conniving politician or an actor desperate to get everyone out to see your film."

Why did Memorial Day turn into doomsday for the movie business?

No wonder straight males didn't flock to PoP.

Okay, I had to check in on the babblers, haven't done it in weeks. Only looked at posts since last Friday.

Only one picture up of Jake from the JJ bunch, and only two anons mentioned Austin by name, and of course linked it to Jake with Austin and his girlfriend Sophia. Everyone seemed to think Jake looked out of sorts in the pictures.

Looks like Jack/Jeff/Brothers Spy was trolling them about Reeke and POP and the bad b.o. but his posts were gone.

Babblers are not being realistic about the bad b. o. for POP--what a surprise. Only UV could get a thrill out of POP doing well in India.

Anonymous said...

something you could say only if you were a conniving politician or an actor desperate to get everyone out to see your film."

LOL.

The serious sports guys don't like those HW actor types doing promos in the middle of serious sporting events, lol:

Direct Link to Mark Heisler article
...

At ESPN the promotion never ceases, as when sideline reporter Doris Burke, hopefully under duress, interviewed actor Jake Gyllenhaal at Game 3 in Boston.
There had to be 1,000,000 Celtics fans more deserving of that courtside seat with Jake, who's not what you'd call a hard-core fan, noting that he roots for the Celtics and Lakers.
And if they met in the Finals?
"I'm just waiting for a Boston-L.A series to make my decision," he said.
Burke even had to ask about "deviating from your traditional roles" — whatever those were — in his new flick, "Prince of Persia," distributed, of course, by ESPN's corporate parent, Disney.
"Oh man, it's like a whole bunch of fun," gushed Jake, getting to the reason for the interview, "and a huge, big, epic, action, comedic, romantic movie."
On the other hand, according to The New York Times' Manohla Dargis, it's "at once generically insulting and relatively innocuous."
I'm not sure what that means, but it doesn't sound like a whole bunch of fun.
Of course, if you look at it that way, the conference finals were huge, big, epic, comedic and romantic, too.
And they were just the warmup.

Anonymous said...

IDK, I don't think just because someone's entire life doesn't revolve around sports is reason for straight guys to boycott PoP in droves. :(

Anonymous said...

They didn't boycott it, they just weren't interested, Jake's comments didn't help any.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, 2:17. It's been ages since I've peeked in at babblerfest - usually don't have the stomach for it, lol. So UV didn't post the Austin pics after all - just one with Jake alone? Very interesting :)

Only UV could get a thrill out of POP doing well in India.

LOL. UV also truly believes Jake walks on water so you do have to consider the source ;)

Austin needs to do something more than 'date' Sophia and be in crappy shows like OTH to be relevant.

Anonymous said...

Why did Memorial Day turn into doomsday for the movie business?
...
So what does this tell us? First, if you're looking for something to blame for the bad weekend, start with the movies themselves. They were stinkers, and everyone figured it out pretty darn quickly. But moviegoers also have figured out that ticket prices are higher than ever, and they're beginning to get a nasty case of sticker shock. They won't avoid the really good movies, such as Chris Nolan's upcoming "Inception." And they probably won't avoid a slam-dunk family favorite such as Pixar's upcoming "Toy Story 3."

Yep, the two movies I'm looking forward to this summer :) Too bad Jake didn't try for a part in "Inception" - and I'm not being sarcastic. No, he wouldn't have star billing over Leo, but I think it would've been better for his career than PoP.

Anonymous said...

Austin needs to do something more than 'date' Sophia and be in crappy shows like OTH to be relevant.

Is that a reference to the babblers' lack of interest? If so, if Jake had been out with a woman, any woman, they would have been all over it like flies all over sh*t.

destiny said...

I don't know why ESPN is coming in for so much criticism for cross-promotion. They all do it. I see it during football season, especially with the Sunday and Monday night games, especially right before the Christmas movie releases (NBC and yes, ESPN again) and Fox during the World Series is truly a media whore for their shows.

However, I wish Jake had given better answers. Trying to please everyone by not picking sides?? For someone who seems to like sports he sure has trouble talking about games and teams.

Anonymous said...

if Jake had been out with a woman, any woman, they would have been all over it like flies all over sh*t.

Well, they do have their wedding outfits still hanging in their closets, after all, gathering dust. And no doubt some have baby presents wrapped and ready, too :)

Anonymous said...

Is that a reference to the babblers' lack of interest?

No, it's an observation. Frankly, I couldn't care less about what the babblers do or think.

Anonymous said...

No wonder Jake wears hats from different teams all the time. He's so desperate for everyone to like him that he refuses to voice his real opinion. That's why he skirts anwering questions during interviews by attempting to be funny.

Anonymous said...

Austin needs to do something more than 'date' Sophia and be in crappy shows like OTH to be relevant.

I wouldn't even know what OTH was if I hadn't heard about it here. I guess it's a steady paycheck, but not much more than that. I imagine the competition for good parts for guys in his age range is fierce.

Anonymous said...

I saw Jack's comments on GB, he was gloating about the failiure of Pop, said Jake should stick to indies and his precious Reese must be laughing now that Pop and Ryan's movie bombed while she is filming Water for Elephants nad has been offered a role in the next Paul Andeson film.

He "embraced" Jake because of Reese, now that she "moved on" he can trash Jake like he trashed Ryan when they broke up (which he did)

Someone copied and pasted some of his postings on imdb where he trashed his precious Reese and called her Phoneyspoon among other things and pointed out that he forgot to delete his comments like he did on her other threads, LOL!

He then disappeared! He never was a Jake fan but will and always be a Reese stalker (online) fanboy.

I think he had lapse when they broke up and deep down thinks she is a Phoney.

Naomi Watts:

Anni fa è stata fidanzata con Heath Ledger. Eravate ancora in contatto quando lui è scomparso, a inizio 2008?
«Sì. Avevo da poco avuto Sasha, e lui era venuto a trovarci».

L'aveva visto depresso?
«No.

She said Heath was NOT depressed. She still dream of him, ans she is in touch with his family and his daughter.

I think he was actually glad the relationship with Williams was over. And i also think he tried to get his act together for the daughter, in order not to lose custody. I think the legal battle over Matilda was the only real issue in his life (he had a great career, a family that loved him, a new girlfriend...). Gemma Ward's sister and Heath family and friends claimed that Heath was enjoying his vacation and his time with them and that the only issue was the legal battel with Williams over Matilda. Then the awful accident happened...:(

Translation:

Years ago you were engaged to Heath Ledger. Were you still in contact with him when he died, at the beginning of 2008?
«Yes. I just had Sasha and he came to see us.»

Did he seem depressed to you?
«No. Heath was a very optimistic person. His death continues to be an incomprehensible tragedy. I still dream about him, I'm in contact with his family and his daughter.»

Do you believe that everyone has a destiny?
«Let's put it this way: Heath's life was too short but it was filled with beautiful things.»

I agree.

Anonymous said...

I feel Heath did have a bit of a bad conscious about Naomi, cause they broke up because he supposedly wasn't ready for family life, then bam a few months later he impregnates another woman. I read Naomi was quite devastated about it. All througout she still stayed in contact with Heath's parents, I think they were and still are very fond of her. I think Heath again approached her when he and MW were at the end of their relationship. But during BBM promo at various events when they bumped into each other they were on friendly terms. She's a very respectable woman.

I agree, Naomi Watts is a classy lady through and through and a great actress.

That has to be kind of strange for Liev Schreiber. I remember an article a few moths ago about them having relationship problems because of their egos and Naomi's difficulty with getting over Heath's death.

Wow. I can't make sense of his death either and I never knew him unlike Naomi. Very beautiful and heartfelt thing to say. Deeply honest. A class act (and BTW, she's amazing in the little seen Mother and Child).

I wonder how Jake feels now that PoP was received so poorly (undeservedly IMO) and if he regrets doing the movie? He did say he refused to take on roles that required a British accent. Doing a solid British accent in PoP, he shouldn't be fearful about it anymore.

Fran Drescher Talks About Her Gay Ex-Husband Peter Marc Jacobson said...

Fran Drescher met her ex-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, in high school, and they married in 1978, when she was just 21. They split after 21 years of marriage and remain close friends--and now both set each other up with men.

In Touch Weekly's press release follows:

Fran Drescher has never been shy about voicing her support for gay rights: In 2008, she and her former husband co-hosted a cocktail party in LA to benefit an organization that has sought to block California's ban on same-sex marriage. But it turns out that the cause was even closer to the Nanny star's heart than her fans could have guessed -- as In Touch can now exclusively reveal, Peter Marc Jacobson, the man to whom Fran, 52, was married for more than two decades, is gay. "Peter and I met when we were 15," Fran tells In Touch. "We were just kids and didn't know who we truly were. We went through a lot together."

The couple split for good in 1999, and according to an insider, Peter later came out of the closet to Fran. They continue to collaborate and are still "the best of friends. We love each other dearly," she says. "We have even fixed each other up! I more successfully than him, by the way." They're even working together on a new sitcom based on their relationship. "Peter and I feel so blessed to have met each other and to still have a caring, loving relationship," Fran says. "Love is what we're all about."

This is a good thing. By portraying Iran's ancient world in romantic and mythological ways - similar to how Hollywood has historically treated Rome and Greece - it becomes one of the most important mainstream films yet for Iranian Americans.

There are no stereotypes, no falsifications, and no misconstrued messages. The film and the video game were inspired by two of the greatest works of Persian literature: the Shahnameh, or Book of Kings, a massive poetic composition written by the great poet, Ferdowsi (also considered Iran's national epic), and A Thousand and One Nights, a collection of stories incorporating ancient Persian folktales and legends.

Just remember that Steve Gyllenhaal and Jamie Lee Curtis are regular contributors and Naomi contributes occasionally. So is the article totally unbiased?

Anonymous said...

They didn't ghostwrite it, I don't think. Jordan Mechner has said that those classic works had been an inspiration to him at least a year ago. There's a link to that somewhere, I think WDW had it when PoP was first being talked about. The article does try to clear up misconceptions, that's only fair.

I'm sure they don't. But everybody knows everybody over there and most of them all vaction on Martha's Vineyard together for years. So if someone whom I had known for many years had a son who had a movie come up that sucked and was heavily critized, I would feel bad for my friend and fellow contributor and try to soften the blow or write something a little more positive.

Anonymous said...

The majority of critics who didn't give PoP good reviews weren't complaining about Jake playing a Persian, etc. Most of them simply thought it had a bad screenplay with corny dialogue, was formulaic, and was poorly directed and edited. And I highly doubt Jake was chosen for the role because they were trying to be historically accurate, lol.

AM : You have premiered Prince of Persia around the world and everywhere you go people have one question for you.

JG : The question I always get is how I got into shape. That seems to be from photographs and the trailer which is all they have to go on at this point. It’s interesting to them, seeing me in a different light. But what I would want people to know about the movie -- it's really important to say -- is that I know guys are interested in the movie, but kids! I cannot wait. All over the world at premieres, wherever there was a child, to see their response after was… [huge smile].

I screened the movie for my cousins and family the other day. My cousins were jumping off the seats! They’re anywhere from 6 to 14, and they were terrifying their parents, but jumping off reasonable heights, jumping and fighting, and that’s what I felt like when I saw Indiana Jones when I was a kid. That’s what I want people to know, people ask me if they can take their kids and if it’s too dangerous? And I’m like: "this movie was made for kids, for family." I can tell everybody now, you can take your kids.

I liken movies to playing a piano: Sometimes you’re playing the chords and different notes with unresolved cadences and playing all major chords that are all over the place and you’re enjoying yourself with a great, simple melody. International Superstar (& Superhot) Athlete Supports Gay Rights

As soccer fans around the world get ready for the FIFA World Cup, which begins in South Africa on June 11th, the sports pages of newspapers worldwide are doing their usual job of ratcheting up expectation by profiling participating team rosters and team members.

Portugal's Púbilico is no different than other papers and yesterday they featured an interview with Portuguese-born Cristiano Ronaldo (pictured above), in which he made worldwide headlines by expressing discontent and frustration about his first six months as a player for Spain's Real Madrid. In the same interview, Ronaldo was also asked whether he followed developments in Portugal including the recent approval of a law that allows same-sex couples to get married. His response:

"The Portuguese man that I am, I try to keep informed about what is happening in my country. I know the law was passed and the comment it deserves is that we must respect the choices made by anyone, because, after all, all citizens should have the exact same rights and responsibilities."

This is a breath of fresh air coming from one of the top players in a sport not particularly known for its tolerance or respect towards gays.

But the drugs - Percocet (pain med), Codeine (pain), Valium (anti-anxiety), Restoril (anti-anxiety, sleep aid), Xanax (anti-anxiety), Unisom (over the counter antihistamine), were not taken “in one go" as you claim. It was over days in L/NYC. Traces of cold meds can stay in your system 48+hrs, benzos a week. (Heroin can stay in hair up to 90 days. Whaaaat-? Aha! – NY med examiner covered up that heroin hair.)

Always wondered about Adam Clayton, but Bono?

I get the feeling NE is trying to have its cake and eat it too--keep the Who is Gay feature, but use safe targets to look at.

The National Enquirer made my day with their “Who’s Gay & Who’s Not” roundup! They say that Lady Gaga and Crystal Bowersox are bisexual, Michael Emerson of “Lost” is straight, and Tyler Perry is maybe gay. Also, none of Cameron Diaz‘s friends would be surprised if she were gay. And stars like Bono, John Mayer, and Rosario Dawson are just happy to lock lips with members of the same sex.

What is it about Heath that makes people in some parts of Jake's fandom fight over him? Either love him or hate him, I just don't get why posters go on and on about him on a Jake site. There's some weird obsession with him, poor guy.

Love how they cover their asses by mixing Bono in there. If only they'd used the shot of Liam Gallagher putting his tongue in Bono's mouth. "Yummy Bono, There's an oasis in my pants and you're totally invited."

Some J&A lovers don't like Heath because they know Jake would have dumped Austin in a nanosecond if Heath was gay. Some JiS fans don't like Heath because Jake liked him "too much". Babblers hate Heath because Jake liked him "too much" and because in their sick minds Heath was Jake's competition.

Olivia Munn has come out fighting for same-sex marriage, and has criticized Barack Obama for not stepping in to what is essentially a human rights issue.

“It’s ridiculous and I’m really upset that Obama, as a black man, and all the things that African-Americans have gone through after being oppressed, has said ’you’re less than’ and cannot stand up and say marriage is a union between two individuals who love each other,” she told Fox News. “I just think everyone should be allowed the same rights – if they want to exercise them, they can and if they don’t, they don’t.”

The statements follow the news that even the African nation of Malawi has relaxed its rules against homosexuality by releasing a same-sex couple jailed for their union.

It's also about a lot more than his relationship with someone who has been dead for over two years.

Somebody here would love to freeze time, and have Jake and Heath tripping off into the sunset with each other, and then rainbows will sprout, Jake won't beard or make bad movies, Heath won't take drugs and they'll raise Matilda together.

Didn't happen when Heath was alive, and it sure isn't going to happen now.

Isn't the talk about Heath on WFT 2more about him and Naomi Watts and Michelle than Jake and Heath?
I see no problem with discussing Heath, since he's the other boy from BBM, which is one of the favourite films from many here on WFT 2 I suppose.
Jake and Heath's friendship was probably nothing spectacular. Got friends during BBM and promo work, Jake is a symbolic godfather to M. and they kept in touch after BBM. Probably mostly per phone and now it's the same with Michelle and Matilda. End of story.

It’s no secret that filmmaker Mark Christopher clashed with Miramax over the final editing of 54. At Outfest 2008 he held a secret screening of his director’s cut, which featured 45 minutes of unseen footage that explored your character’s bisexuality and included your kiss with costar Breckin Meyer. Do you wish the studio had honored Mark’s original vision?
I absolutely do. I understand the reasoning from a business standpoint, but artistically I’m against the changes that were made because I feel like there was a better movie there to begin with. We thought we were making something like Boogie Nights because it was about a time of complete sexual abandon, but the studio watered it down. They had Mike Myers from Austin Powers and Neve Campbell from Scream, so they felt they could make a mall movie out of material that was a lot more edgy and honest. I did hear about that secret screening. I don’t know how big of an appetite there is for it, but I would certainly support a DVD release of that version. Breckin and I were a bit sad that nobody got to see us kiss.

Those films in the ’90s certainly earned you a big gay following.
And thank God for that. I’m very aware and appreciative. Because I started my career playing a gay teenager on One Life to Live when I was very young, I’ve always had a heightened sensitivity to that response, and I’m definitely considerate of that audience.
...

One Life to Live recently aired daytime television’s first gay sex scene. How much same-sex affection could you show when you played gay teen Billy Douglas?
Me and the guy who played my boyfriend might’ve held hands once or twice, but that was it. The age of those characters had something to do it, but things also weren’t as liberal in 1992. Still, I felt lucky to play the first gay teenager on television—not just daytime but television, period. What was so amazing about that for me was the response I got through fan letters that my mother and I would read together. Kids who’d never seen themselves represented on TV or in movies would write to say what a huge support they found it to be. One kid said he’d considered suicide before seeing a character like him being accepted. I also heard from a father, a mechanic, who hadn’t spoken to his son since he came out. When our show came on in his shop, it gave him some insight and understanding as to who his son was, so it opened up communication between them. As much as you can write off how silly the entertainment industry can be, it can affect change and make people see things differently. That’s beautiful.
...

The MacGruber screenwriters are writers on SNL, which also has a tendency to rely on gay jokes—like when MacGruber’s son, played by host Shia LaBeouf, came out of the closet armed with a vibrator and anal lubricant. As a recent SNL host yourself, where do you draw the line when it comes to homophobic humor?
I have my own meter as to what is and isn’t offensive, but I might bounce something off of my gay friends to get another perspective. You’re right, SNL does do that, but it’s all in a decent spirit. I know a lot of those writers who are incredibly liberal and supportive of gay rights.

What else did you and your gay buddy do in Austin?
We ended up going to a gay bar there, but I don’t even think anyone noticed me. I was kind of shocked. Maybe my gay fans are just better behaved than my straight fans.

You weren’t worried about sparking gay rumors?
Who cares, man, in this day and age?

Disney and Bruckheimer should get most of the blame, but fair or not, most articles are saying that Jake's lack of drawing power also hurt the film. And its probably true that with a bigger name the film might have done better. There seem to be tons of people who will go to a movie just because Will Smith is in it. There are not enough Jake fans who do the same.

It's a good thing he has the other two movies, because they will give Jake a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of the studios and producers.

And if Jake is seen as not being able to get enough boys and men into the theater for an action film like POP, that does not bode well for the Namath project--not that I think the world needs another by the numbers biopic.

Anonymous said...

^^^
"Yes, Joe Namath is something I've been involved in and developing and trying to make really, really right because you have to make it pretty badass if you're going to do it right," the actor said. "So we're trying to do that and it's taken a little while."

In November of '07, David Hollander ("The Cleaner") was tapped to pen the script. This past April, the Los Angeles Times reported that James Mangold ("Knight and Day") was being approached to take on directing duties. The Times story also stated that while Gyllenhaal had "come aboard" the project years ago, he had not been officially cast.

But the 29-year-old told us, "I'm committed," and admitted that the role would not require nearly the amount of hitting-the-gym work that his turn in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" did.

"I don't know about that," he laughed about packing on the muscles to play the Jets signal caller. "I don't know what I have to get back into to play Joe Namath, but I'll do it."

There's nothing for him to say - he's already made his points with his many remarks about Sophia and Austin and their "convenient" relationship, with confirming that Austin has a BV and that Sophia is aware of it, and recently answering a question as to whether Jake and Austin were still friends and describing them as bffs and besties.

Box office preview: Why 'Shrek' will topple all four new releases

The hand-wringing has begun. After both Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia garnered less-than-optimal results last weekend, chatter about why the summer box office is not performing up to par went in full effect. In the end, Sex and the City 2 — with $57 million in its coffers statewide — should end its run in the green, but I’m sure talks of making a third are not happening. And though people expected more from Prince of Persia, which Disney must have spent a mint marketing, it’s a movie based on a video game starring a guy best known for his indie work. The lesson learned here: Jake Gyllenhaal is not a movie star.

This weekend is not going to improve things much. Yes, there are four new releases hitting theaters tomorrow, but it’s unlikely any of them will cross the $20 million mark. In fact, Get Him to the Greek, Marmaduke, and Killers will all be vying for second place in the $15-$18 million range.
...

5. Prince of Persia: $14 million
Expect this to drop over 50 percent too this weekend. The word-of-mouth has not been kind, and with so much other fare in the marketplace to distract, Persia will be lucky if it crosses $100 million.
