Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Mike Newell:

'I’d known Jake for a long time because I’d known his parents and worked with his sister, but I’d never worked with him. His face is his fortune. He looks like he has one layer of skin fewer than anyone else; he’s tender and vulnerable in a way that a lot of people aren’t. But then he made himself into an action hero. I saw him do it, step by step. Of course the stunt man is there, because of insurance, but Jake did all his own riding, his own fighting, his own gymnastics. It’s something that you don’t see until you look at the whole movie and think: Christ, he actually did that. On the one hand he gave what I expected him to give, which is the sensitive actor stuff. But on the other, he really worked hard.'

Sir Ben Kingsley:

'Jake is a great leading man to work with - he's wonderful to work with because he makes himself vulnerable. For a strong young guy like that, not many of his American counterparts are vulnerable. They don't dare to be vulnerable because they think vulnerable is weak. It is not - to be vulnerable is to be very strong.'

I haven't seen many of Heath's films (some were crap) but I noticed how different he looks in them. He was very versatile.

"Don't get me started on someone who becomes a character so much that he was barely recognizable (but his first initial is "H" and his last initial is "L")."

Well I recognize him each time, even in the joker.

People who 's telling Deep is genius are joke! He's playing the same part for 10 years now, covering is face with a lot a lot of make up! In POTC is so boring doing having the same expressions al the time, trying to be fun but pathetic instead.

"Jake is a great actor, he proved that more than once."

some don't understand that you don't have to be a "showy" actor to be great! I know why I prefer european actor over americans generally. Come in europe jake....

"Jake does not have it. He blends into the scene. He is still a good actor, but like many actors, this keeps him from being a mega star, like he wants. On the other hand, he .. does command the TV screen."

what are you saying so ?

Anonymous said...

I would like the definition of a "mega star"!

Anonymous said...

Mega star = mega-recognizable name.

Anonymous said...

"Mega star = mega-recognizable name."

hum yes Paris hilton is a mega star.

Anonymous said...

That's not enough 12:53 PM, you have to have star power too to be a mega star.

Anonymous said...

some don't understand that you don't have to be a "showy" actor to be great!

I hear this line repeated a lot. I understand perfectly the difference between "showy" and truly good acting. I disagree that Johnny Depp is a "showy" actor - his parts in POTC and Edward Scissorhands, etc., are meant to be over-the-top and he does it to perfection. But he also knows how to hit exactly the right tone to fit his role - "Finding Neverland" for instance. On the other hand, Nic Cage is a showy actor. Al Pacino is a showy actor.

Heath was never, ever just a "showy" actor. When Daniel Day Lewis gives you his genuine praise and high regard - well, enough said.

Anonymous said...

I know a lot of people love him but IMO RDJ is an example of showy actor. He is talented, I can't deny that, but he is a ham even in roles that don't require over the top acting. This since he became big, he wasn't always like that.

Anonymous said...

And DDL is an actor's actor. I haven't seen Ironman 2 yet, but I loved the first one and didn't think I would. I know PoP is going to have great beauty on the big screen, and I can't wait to enjoy.

Heath and daniel are methodic actors ,which is worst IMO! nothing natural in their acting, all is calculated , studied...

Anonymous said...

I love actors who work with their instinct not the actors studio.

Anonymous said...

I thought Iron Man 2 was a snoozefest. RDJ hams it up there and in Sherlock Holmes, not to mention in Tropic Thunder (admittedly, this required over the top acting).

LOL! Er, no. Method acting consists of different methods that help the actor have the thoughts/emotions of the characters they’re portraying in order to make the performance more authentic. In fact, it’s much more internalized that classical acting where the actor is "faking" it so to speak.

I thought method acting was drawing from feelings or experiences?

Yes, some do that but it's not a rule. Every method actor had his own techniques.

I don't think blending in is always a bad thing. As much as I love Depp and RDJ, you never forget it is them.

I agree. Can I spew for a while? I don't think blending-in is bad at all, but it is the task of soldiers, the hard-working, indispensable actors who make a movie run and rattle and hum. Vital to a film, but not its fulcrum. Lead actors are more like generals. They should not blend in. They have to anchor the whole enterprise and carry the film. Whenever they are on it, they need to hold the screen. They must win the audience's empathy and interest no matter what, whether they are playing hero or villain.

If Jake wants to be a headliner, that's what he has to do.

(IMO one of the problems in Robin Hood - which I liked - is that the great Mark Strong holds the screen better than Russell Crowe, and this unbalances the movie. Russell's an outstanding actor usually but here he blends in and seems kind of mushy and undefined. He won't be getting any Oscars for this performance.)

Depp and RDJ are very good actors but I wouldn't classify them as great because, as you say, you rarely forget it's them. What they are is great stars. Or at least Johnny is. I sometimes find RDJ insufferably self-absorbed and I think it leaks into his screen work.

JD is not only at the top of the Hollywood pile, he's also an impressive human being whose many facets set him apart, not least of which are his kindness, modesty and generosity. I once saw him (admittedly from a distance, lol) handle a ridiculous situation with incredible grace. He saved the day and made about 80 overwrought people love him instantly, not because he bought cupcakes for the crew or danced a jig, but because he was gentle and considerate to even the lowliest around him. That is part of what makes him a legitimately great star.

But to get back to the topic (!)... I think disappearing into a role is the essence of great acting. Daniel Day-Lewis' Oscar-winning performances in "My Left Foot" and "There Will Be Blood," for example.

So when it comes to great (and please, 8:59AM, don't throw the word "great" around so promiscuously - Jake is not yet great), I think it should be applied to actors that have given us iconic performances. Performances that leave a lasting impression in the film history of their time.

Marlon Brando - On The Waterfront
James Dean- Rebel Without a Cause
De Niro - Raging Bull
Nicholson- One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest

Ian Mckellen's Gay Motivation said...

Sir Ian McKellen became an actor to meet men. The 70-year-old actor - who announced he was homosexual in 1988 - admits he felt isolated when he was younger, but thought he would meet other gay people if he embarked on a stage career.

He said: "I'd heard that a lot of professional actors were gay. Acting seemed like a chance for me to meet like-minded people.

"You know, at that time same-sex love in Britain got you into prison. Homosexuality was being completely hushed up. Gay teachers, politicians or firemen - that was something unthinkable. "When I was young I thought I was the only gay Brit. That's why I was glad to find people like me in the actors guild."

The 'Lord of the Rings' star also revealed he lost out on one role because of his sexuality, but insists he has no regret about being open about it.

He added to Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper: "I remember losing only one job because of my coming-out. I was supposed to play one of the lead roles in Harold Pinter's 'Betrayal' who eventually were given to Ben Kingsley and Jeremy Irons. The producer Sam Spiegel dropped a sexist comment about wives during a meeting and when I replied I was fortunate to be gay I was quickly shown the door.

"I didn't care, though. I know back then my agent strongly advised me against coming out. A lot of my friends thought it was very courageous. For me it was simply inevitable.

"I'm not urging anyone to do the same, but the alternative option is horrible: lies, fear, secrecy. Every self-confessed homosexual I have met assured me his coming-out was the best decision of his life."

What Went Wrong with Prince of Persia

I’d rather be watching HBO. That’s my new T-shirt mantra. This holiday weekend I’ll lay odds, sight unseen, that watching the third installment (HBO Saturday 9 PM) of writer Peter Morgan’s Tony Blair trilogy, The Special Relationship, about the British ex-prime minister’s relationship with then-president Bill Clinton (Dennis Quaid) will prove more satisfying than the miscast, over-wrought $200-million Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time or the shoddily written and executed Sex and the City 2, which hordes of women will flock to see, nasty reviews be damned.

Actually, Jerry Bruckheimer and Mike Newell’s Prince of Persia is not terrible: it’s a well-made, fun, featherweight $200-million-plus B-movie adventure, Aladdin meets Raiders of the Lost Ark with steals from Lawrence of Arabia. And it’s something that studio execs dread: the attempted launch of a franchise, for which Disney has adopted the “brand” of an established videogame that is recognized by a fragment of the moviegoing audience. So does it mean anything as a title? Well, because Bruckheimer took a Disney e-ride, Pirates of the Caribbean and turned it into a huge franchise, one can see why the studio would hand the reliable producer some play money.

But judging from the reaction on my Twitter feed, if Prince of Persia plays better for me than its target male vidgame demo, then it shouldn’t cost $200 million.

And Disney insisted on starring Jake Gyllenhaal. I understand why his agents want to broaden his appeal, but Gyllenhaal is miscast as an action hero. In some ways this reveals the current void in leading men with enough weight to carry larger-than-life fantasy fare. (James Cameron fought with Fox over casting unproven Sam Worthington over Gyllenhaal in Avatar.) Although Disney knows that Gyllenhaal has never carried a big movie, at least he’s a known commodity. And he was extraordinary opposite Heath Ledger in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain, which was a word-of-mouth hit. But the ensembles Brothers, Jarhead, Zodiac and Rendition were all box-office disappointments.

In Prince of Persia Gyllenhaal is charming and physical—with a boost from stuntmen and digital effects—in the role of a wily, athletic young prince who is scooped off the street as a kid by a kindly king. But he is saddled with a Cockney accent in an ensemble of Brits (Alfred Molina is the movie’s comedic stand-out). I suspect that many of Gyllenhaal’s young female fans would rather see him in a more contemporary, naturalistic mode.

You could see this summer misfire coming a mile away. The risk when you aim for the widest possible demo is that you wind up appealing to no one. This movie is PG-13, family and women-friendly, with scads of stunts and effects with male appeal. But it has no edge. It reminds me of the Paramount movie Stardust, another tweener that wound up with no target niche. It was neither genre fantasy nor family adventure. But in that case, it wasn’t supposed to be a summer tentpole.

LOL. I haven't peeked in at lashers or babblers in ages. I'm assuming they're even more nausea inducing than usual.

Anonymous said...

What was the point?

1. That he doesn't have to make everything a joke. (i.e., stop making that corny joke about hair washing as the way to build up your pecs and abs - maybe it would be more interesting to just give a straight answer). No one is saying that he has to get into any in-depth serious discussions.

2. That his joking on camera is partly a way of guarding/hiding himself. It's a defense mechanism.

3. He mentioned in the GQ interview that a lot of actors feel like they have to constantly be "on" and put on an act in public - he is obviously including himself in this description.

Two million short of Satc after Saturday? That's not bad at all. In fact, I'm mildly impressed with Pop's BO numbers considering the franchise power behind Satc and shrek. After a weak Friday, Pop must have roared back on Saturday, largely on the back of kids and parents I think.

If these numbers continue, I think it will safe to say by Tuesday morning that Jake can carry a major film in his own because he did ninety-five percent of the interviews.

Satc, by the way, has got to be one if the worst films ever. You can leave after the gay wedding in the first ten minutes. What utter garbage. Popreally caught a break on that one.

Let's hope Jake is smart enough to learn from this. Jake is Bubbleboy. Jake is Johnnie Darko, Jake is Jack Twist. Go with what you are good at. Dennis Hooper may he RIP knew what he was good at and stuck with it. He eventually won and Oscar and gained admiration worldwide.

PoP is Jake's first big budget movie in which he is the star (TDAT was a Dennis Quaid movie). Third place is not bad for a start.

TDAT was #2.

I'm really starting to think that is Jake who is box-office poison...

Right now he obviously can't carry a movie. Someone on imdb noted that even crap like "Dear John" made a bigger opening.

Jake needs a commercial and critical hit again asap.

"Two million short of Satc after Saturday? That's not bad at all. In fact, I'm mildly impressed with Pop's BO numbers considering the franchise power behind Satc and shrek. After a weak Friday, Pop must have roared back on Saturday, largely on the back of kids and parents I think"

well I agree! There is something suprised me though: anybody find disney marketing odd during the beginning? I feeled there was no marketing at all till the last week !!

"For Jake's sake I wish better box office, but the idea of Jake doing more PoP movies is terrifying."

yes me too, but on other hand I trust him. He was clear about his motivations on doing POP; it was more for fun and (accessory good paycheck) but He perfectly knows those movies are just useless popcorn films. He just has to , like many young actors in HW unfortunately, prove he can carry a movie on his shoulders to be in productors views and having so more interesting roles.
for now I just wish he goes on doing challenging movies because it's what he does the best.

"Why shitfest like "300" and "The Mummy" are major hits and PoP failed? I'm really starting to think that is Jake who is box-office poison..."

well it's really weird. I am not sure it's relative to the lead. I think there is a lot of prejuge about video game adaptation and yes shrek is more apropriate for kids. As for SATC , what a shit!

Was "Bad" Sex Still Good? said...

Eh.

Sex and the City 2 and Jake Gyllenhaal's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time were the hot new couple at the weekend box office.

Except they weren't. All that hot, that is.

Sex and the City 2 did great for a romantic comedy, especially an R-rated romantic comedy that was called "bad" and any other number of disparaging things by critics. Its estimated $32.1 million Friday-Sunday gross, however, did not look great next to its 2008 predecessor, which took in a phenomenal $57 million in the same three-day span. Since opening Thursday, Sex and the City 2 has grossed $46.3 million overall domestically. And, again, that's the best start yet for a 2010 romantic comedy. But, again, it's not off to a 2008 Sex and the City start.

Nor is the Sarah Jessica Parker-and-friends franchise off to the No. 1 start that many predicted. With Monday still go in the four-day, Memorial Day box-office race, it's in second place, behind Shrek Forever After. "With any sequel you want to see an increase in the number of fans," BoxOffice.com editor Phil Contrino said today, "and this obviously didn't happen here…It flatlined."

And, not to be a nag, but the new movie reportedly cost at least $30 million more than the last one.

As for Prince of Persia—its title, as Box Office Mojo reminded, dwarfed in billboards by its release date—it's in third place, with $30.2 million, which is about what was expected (or, OK, maybe worse) considering its buzz, or lack thereof. More discouraging for Gyllenhaal's action-figure aspirations, the early foreign returns on Prince of Persia have not recalled Russell Crowe's Robin Hood, which likewise cost $200 million, and likewise opened with only $30 million here, but which redeemed itself with strong overseas grosses.

Here's a rundown of the weekend's top-grossing films, per Friday-Sunday estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

Shrek Forever After, $43.3 million
Sex and the City 2, $32.1 million
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, $30.2 million

Frankly most people don't see a movie for the lead actor but for the story first otherwise all the actors said "bankable" would hold the box office all the time which isn't the case!

yes but that prove the lead doesn't do alone the success of bow office. If the movie for wathever reasons doesn't interest people it won't work clooney, pitt, jackman or not.

Anyway the importance some give to the bow office is scaring.

Anyway the importance some give to the bow office is scaring.

Movies like PoP are all about box office, the rest is irrelevant but for argument's sake, it didn't do great with the critics either. Other than that, how else can you measure a movie's success?

1:22, 12:59 - I thought that it was going to be a SATC/Shrek blow-out weekend. Then we'd have to endure endless headlines about yet another Jake-led bust (Zodiac, Brothers, Rendition). At least you could say that even though his last three films bombed, they were great films. If PoP bombed, you couldn't say that it was a great film that people just didn't appreciate. And given how staggeringly manipulative, secretive, shallow, incoherent, duplicitous and homophobic Jake has become since Reeke, I really couldn't muster much sympathy for him if PoP tanked. But from all indications, Pop is doing relatively well, especially considering the strong competition from Shrek and SATC.

For political reasons, I'm not going to see PoP (the GQ interview was the last straw for me), but will pay attention to the total weekend numbers on Tuesday.

"Here's a rundown of the weekend's top-grossing films, per Friday-Sunday estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations:"

I'm not interested in estimates. Wait until the hard numbers come in on Tuesday.

Anonymous said...

Is it so essential?

Yes. Jake obviously wants to be a leading man and star in PoP like movies at least every now and then. But in order to do that he needs to prove his bankability. As of now, he couldn't.

Anonymous said...

(Zodiac, Brothers, Rendition)

Rendition wasn't great at all. Zodiac otoh is a great film. After Se7en my favourite Fincher film, hands down.

Brother's wasn't either, rather mediocre. I agree about Zodiac.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Austin Nichols Hit Gym with Sophia Bush said...

Jake Gyllenhaal works up a sweat during an intense two hour work-out on Saturday afternoon (May 29) in Los Angeles.

The 29-year-old actor was accompanied by One Tree Hill co-stars (and real-life couple) Austin Nichols and Sophia Bush.

Jake and Austin used to bike together all the time and have been hitting the trails since at least 2006. They look quite snug in their spandex together!

Jake’s new movie, Prince of Persia: Prince of Thieves, opened in theaters this weekend. It debuted at #3 at the box office with $30.2 million behind Shrek Forever After and Sex and the City 2.

See, that's exactly it. If they were still fucking I don't think Jake would be papped with Austin and Sophia. Not after all the straight crap shoved down our throats during PoP promo. I think he's allowing to be papped with them because they have nothing to hide (anymore).

These pics actually make me more sure than ever than Jake and Austin are a couple. This photo op with the beard on the weekend that PoP needs better box office is for sure an attempt to create publicity. Choosing this exact weekend to being seen together, but bringing the beard to reassure everybody how 'straight' they are. It's obvious they are alternating beardings. Sophin upped their profile when Reeke ended. Jake and Austin are creating this bearding game together.

To get this straight, I'm not a delusional shipper. But the only time I sometimes saw Jake having ST with a man was with Heath. But I think that was a result of filming. Becoming friends and on top being so physically close...IMO it's natural that it could result in ST, even if you are not gay. JMO!

Anonymous said...

I can't forget all those times when Jake and Austin didn't work and didn't make an effort to be in the same city. That is the reason I think they aren't together.

Of course she'll post them. That's the m.o. of babblers - even though there is that little place in their hearts where they question Jake's sexuality (but would never admit it) - they always publicly eat the crap he scoops up for them. Jake knows he is never going to convince the Jake is Gay believers that he's straight - so it's just the fangirls and naive public that he has to play to. And he does :)

UV never posted Jake and Austin April 2009 pictures (so I'm told).

That would only make sense if Sophia wasn't in the pictures.

Ok. If this new pics wouldn't have showed up on JJ today, how many of us would be thinking that Jake&Austin are spending the day together? Not me,for sure... but here they are! And they OBVIOUSLY wanted their pics to be taken, i think that is pretty clear.

I think they have no problems on hooking up without the world knowing it. This time, Jake needs to shake it up his "older" fansite base because of b.o.troubles with PoP

Anonymous said...

But the only time I sometimes saw Jake having ST with a man was with Heath.

That's because they had great chemistry and Jake wanted to fuck Heath but he didn't (unresolved sexual tension). IMO he was really, really attracted to Heath, on more that physical level. I do, however, think that Jake is gay and fucks men (he tried to pick up Francis and I absolutely believe that one), but these pictures just make me think he and Austin aren't more than friends anymore.

The point is that they worked a lot and had no chance of hooking up most of the time during Reeke. And when they didn't work they weren't together (traveling with Sophia, tweets and sightings of them on different coasts).

Fun With Google said...

I wonder when PR will realize no one really cares about Austin and Sophia being a "couple"...

When you search Sophia Bush, Google's related searches include "Sophia Bush James Lafferty" but not Austin.

When you search Austin Nichols, you get "Austin Nichols baby" (LOL) and "Austin Nichols Jake Gyllenhaal" but no Sophia.

Oh well!

I agree, these are photo ops, just like the biking ones during Reeking. One more reason to make me think they aren't a couple, just friends helping each other out. It's all too planned.

I've never been a Jaustin believer, but these pics are so clearly contrived and so clearly a photo op it's ridiculous. There is no way it's just a happy accident that after deliberately avoiding being seen together for over a year, all of a sudden they go out in public, with Austin's "girlfriend" two days after Jake's big movie opens. And also just a couple days after Sophia decides to speak publicly about how she and Austin have been together "off and on" for four years. Please.

"Powerful opening launches in a handful of key overseas markets on the Memorial Day weekend propelled " Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" to the No. 1 spot on the foreign-theatrical circuit.

The Disney film drew $59 million from 7,100 screens in 47 territories for an early international cume of $87.5 million. Taking second place on the weekend was " Sex and the City 2," which opened on the foreign circuit with $27.6 million from 3,700 screens in 17 markets.

But back in the U.S., "Sex" and "Prince" finished second and third behind "Shrek Forever After," which shook off the competition during a slow Memorial Day weekend stateside. After Saturday, "Shrek" collected $43.3 million, stronger than "Sex" ($32.1 million) and "Prince" ($30.2 million).

In "Prince's" second week on the foreign circuit, the Jerry Bruckheimer production finished No. 1 in at least 40 of its 47 markets and helped drive Disney's 2010 foreign boxoffice revenues past the $1-billion for the 16th consecutive year.

It was the fastest that Disney has ever reached that benchmark. The studio joins Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox in 2010's $1-billion foreign b.o. club, confirming that this year on the overseas circuit is exceptionally strong.

"Shrek" finished third wordwide, which opened in six markets including Turkey. Overall weekend tally was $18.5 million from 1,685 venues in 15 territories."

So there is a chance that PoP returns invested money. Good.

Anonymous said...

6:12.. for Pop to return its invested money it has to make around $400m minimum. It may do this, but its going to be a push, at the moment it doesn't look like its going to be a run away money maker. Also, markets like russia and china are notorious for piracy so after the first weekend noone is really going to be spending good money at the movie theatres. Its a bomb, or at least a semi-bomb, its not the end of the world but its not a brilliant for Jake's future career prospects.

ITA. I figured Jake would be spending time with Austin now that they both don't have work to worry about.

Also agree that it is a set up photo opp. I do think with POP not doing well this is an attempt to create some excitement, maybe among women and gays who have been going to SATC. Or it may have been planned all along, given the very convenient "we've been dating for 4 years" Sophia lie.
