Mr. Gyllenhaal, who gave a knockout dramatic performance in Nick Payne’s “Constellations” this year, turns into a young nerd’s dream of a musical matinee idol as Seymour, the schlemiel who unwittingly adopts a plant that plans to devour the universe. He can sing, too, more than passably and with a goofy ardor that matches Ms. Greene’s. I don’t care what the age gap is between them; these two have sweet, sweet chemistry.
This production had the fizzy spontaneity of one of those unexpected New York dinner parties, where an oddball guest list and a make-do menu create magic that a glamorous catered affair could never hope to achieve.
It was as if some inspired host had said: “Ms. Greene, have you met Mr. Gyllenhaal? No? Would you two like to try singing a few songs together at the piano?” And then other guests picked up on the spare parts, and before you knew it, you were in the midst of an intoxicating singalong that you never wanted to end.
That was what this “Little Shop” felt like, tasting all the sweeter because it will never happen again in exactly this way. As long as this city can deliver the occasional night like this one, New York really is the capital of the universe for hard-core theater lovers.

Jake Gyllenhaal may be the Hollywood star of the Encores! staged concert reading of “Little Shop of Horrors,” but he’s not taking the last bow. He’s giving that to Ellen Greene, the stage favorite reprising the role that made her famous in the 1982 Howard Ashman-Alan Menken musical. At the July 2 matinee, as the standing-ovation audience cheered her, she looked genuinely overcome with emotion.
That afternoon performance was one of just three shows the production is squeezing in prior to the July Fourth holiday, a catch-it-if-you-can proposition that has helped make “Little Shop” the hottest ticket in town. And the day after it opened July 1, the quickie run landed the kind of swoony New York Times review that gets the hearts of Broadway producers fluttering.
At very least, Broadway will be scrambling to find a musical for Gyllenhaal to star in. The actor, who’s playing a nebbishy plant-shop employee in “Little Shop,” has already proven himself as a Broadway draw, helping to turn the play “Constellations” into a hit last season. With “Little Shop” he’s shown he can carry a musical, too.

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival is coming out swinging this Sunday, July 5, with Jake Gyllenhaal’s new film Southpaw. It’s a gritty boxing movie from the director of Training Day and writer of Sons of Anarchy. But the festival is not just about audiences sitting back and watching a movie. Mr. Gyllenhaal will be at the screening to answer questions after the film, which will be screened at the Performing Arts Center at the high school. Showtime is at 8 p.m.
The event is also a benefit for the festival and those who want some alone time with Mr. Gyllenhaal can pay $500 for a small dinner party with him.

“I just feel more alive in what I’m doing,” Jake Gyllenhaal, star of this week’s excellent “Nightcrawler,” told Indiewire back in February. While that could easily sound like so much actorly cod psychology, so much soundbite-friendly chatter from a PR-trained star with a movie to shill (it was on the eve of the release of “Enemy”), two main factors put the lie on that possibility. First, if there’s a single trait that characterizes the meta-story of Gyllenhaal’s career to date, it may very well be sincerity. He has not always succeeded, and his choices have not been flawless, but it feels like he has essayed each role, whether it’s his shimmery, minor key Oscar-nominated turn in “Brokeback Mountain,” or the bluff, buff, bronzed action hero of “Prince of Persia,” with a whole heart. It’s not difficult to believe that Gyllenhaal takes his responsibility to his films seriously, even when they have failed to serve him in return.
Second, and most importantly, the kind of revitalization of which he was speaking is simply plainly observable right now. Perhaps because his films have never quite sunk the to nadirs of fellow renaissance-narrative recipients Michael Keaton or Matthew McConaughey (Gyllenhaal, being younger, has no real equivalent to the likes of “Post Grad” or “Fool’s Gold” in his back catalogue), or perhaps because that aforementioned sincerity meant that even in mediocre films he’d be giving it his all, Gyllenhaal’s resurgence might not feel quite so meteoric. But without doubt his fortunes have waxed and waned, and at this point it is impossible to ignore that the 33-year-old actor is coming off a string of blistering performances in films actually worthy of his commitment and dedication. It’s as though after a long period of prevarication, and of testing different types of stardom on him, suddenly the world, and Jake Gyllenhaal, knows exactly what to do with Jake Gyllenhaal.

But Gyllenhaal’s Loki is the best of the bunch, and that’s remarkable for a character who couldn’t be more of a cliche: the hero cop who’s never failed to solve a case. To put it simply, he’s a total weirdo, with a blinking tic, tattoos, and borderline Asperger-y social skills, and hints at a darker past a long way from his current path of law and order, one that the performance and film is smart enough to keep on the fringes. Almost every choice the actor makes is unexpected, and his off-beat rhythms clash beautifully with Jackman's terrifying, grief-stricken revenge-bear. But given that he watched a hundred hours of police interrogations while doing research for the role, it’s not surprising that he comes off a little bit unhinged.

Playing dual roles is something that many top actors get to do at some point (this wasn’t the selling point for him, though: “Someone just asked me,” he told Salon earlier this year, ‘Have you always had a bucket list where you wanted to play two characters in a movie?’ You know—is that some sort of actor indulgence or something? And that was the implication and I’ve never thought about that, ever"), but Gyllenhaal shies away from showiness, playing Adam and Daniel as two sides of the same coin, yet still carefully delineated. Until, at least, they crash into each other “Persona”-style, marked subtly by the performer. It’s a performance internalized to a degree that’s very rare to screen, and another example of the risk-taking that’s greeted this exciting new stage of the actor’s career.

Gyllenhaal traces his disciplined work ethic to his father, Stephen, as well. When he was 8 or 9, growing up in Los Angeles, Gyllenhaal would wake up early in the morning and go running with him before school. Stephen was athletic, a top-ranked wrestler in high school in Pennsylvania, but also had an artistic side. "My dad played viola and was also on the football team," Gyllenhaal says. "He grew up in a small town, very religious, Christian. When he brought a Jewish girl home, it was a very particular thing. But he was Swedish, and so always an adventurer. He's the guy that says if you're anywhere near an ocean and you don't get in, you're doing yourself a big disservice. And I always feel him. If a storm is about to come, he's the guy who's like, 'Look how big the waves are—let's get in them for a little bit.'"

Jake Gyllenhaal’s new film “Southpaw” screened at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival over the weekend, and the actor was on hand afterward to answer a few questions. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and costarring Forest Whitaker and Rachel McAdams, “Southpaw” tells the story of a boxer who returns to the ring one last time over the objections of his wife. The gritty fight flick opens July 24. Sunday’s screening at the Performing Arts Center in Oak Bluffs was a benefit for the film fest. (For several years, Gyllenhaal’s parents, Naomi Foner and Stephen Gyllenhaal, owned a house on the Vineyard.) Before the screening, Gyllenhaal joined 80 film fest supporters who paid $500 each to dine with the actor at the Chilmark home of Jill and Ken Iscol.
The meal was prepared by chef Chris Fischer, a Vineyard native and longtime friend of the actor.
