To go to that place, to give everything and still be healthy, you need to recognize and create boundaries. Trust is essential, and there has to be a level of an intimacy with your director and with the other actors, where you can be vulnerable and you can listen to them. And ultimately you have to be definitive and clear about the place you are willing to go. You need to be able to know what a safe space is. With Southpaw, the director Antoine Fuqua and I became very close. He created a world, where we knew Billy would have to completely let go, and that there would be this breaking point, but I could allow for that, because I knew Antoine always kept me safe, and I always knew I could come out of it and take a breath. Commitment and discipline aren't about not resting; I think pulling yourself out of it is a huge part of the process. It lets you be more intense.
These stories teach you a lot about yourself. Sometimes it's only after the fact, you realize why you told them. It's not about how people respond to it, it's very personal. Southpaw brought me to a new chapter where I'm more interested in vulnerability. When I look back at the last five characters I've played, there's been a sort of brokenness and protective quality in them. With Billy, there's this change and this vulnerability, and I think now I feel myself move more towards opening my heart in character. I'm interested in moving in different directions and listening to my instinct more. You listen to that and it's a question of fate, free will and destiny. You wonder, "Am I listening to myself? Or is something else guiding me?" I'm not sure. But that is what I'm looking to explore.

So here was Greene all these years later, scarily sleek and bewigged; it could have been Carol Channing up there, except for that voice, seemingly unchanged after three decades: a bated-breath birdsong of chirps and moans that tugs at the heart and then tugs some more, ever threatening to cross the line into camp but triumphing on sheer musicality.
As her foils for this staging by Dick Scanlan, Greene was quite wonderfully served by Jake Gyllenhaal as Seymour and SNL‘s Taran Killam as the wicked dentist (among several roles he took on with equal relish). Gyllenhaal’s zhlubby, bespectacled Seymour adds yet another accomplished, unexpected character to the range of stage roles the movie star has taken on; his singing showed both delicacy and, in Seymour’s rousing duet with Greene, “Suddenly Seymour,” considerable power. Flower power, I guess.
Joe Grifasi as Mushnik, Eddie Cooper as Audrey II and Tracy Nicole Chapman, Marva Hicks and Ramona Keller as the back-up singers we’d all love to have embellishing our lives, were all fine. But this fundraiser for City Center’s musical programming rightfully belonged to Greene.

Elisabeth Vincentelli, New York Post: She and Gyllenhaal didn't have great chemistry, though, and this had nothing to do with their 30-year age difference - which, refreshingly, is the exact opposite of the one in Hollywood romances. Rather they had completely different acting styles, as evidenced on their duet "Suddenly, Seymour": He sang with contained, affecting emotion while she shamelessly milked the number, dropping to her knees and grabbing fistfuls of air. Yet there was such joy in the air during the show that it's hard to quibble. Special kudos go to Taran Killam, of "SNL," who slayed in several supporting roles - including the key one of Audrey's boyfriend, a sadistic dentist who gets high on nitrous oxide. Killam was fantastically at ease in his stage debut, and proved he can really sing, too. Broadway awaits this guy.

David Finkle, Huffington Post: Because the Encores! series, winter season as well as summer, technically remains a concert reading, some cast members--Gyllenhaal chief among them--are on book, but that hardly matters as Audrey II's mounting dominance over Seymour, Audrey and the others barrels on. Only picky spectators would be bothered by what flaws there are in as a flawless recreation of one of the musical annal's most delightful entries as you'd wish for. Its unlikely that the welcome production, directed with care by Dick Scanlan, will be moved, like, say, Violet, was in a past City Center's summer season. Were it to be, that many more audiences would be enraptured and roused to one of the few truly deserving standing ovations instantly accorded it. By the way, the finale is framed as a tribute to Ashman, and that, too, is unquestionably deserved.

The mood was ecstatic last night for the first of three concert performances of Little Shop of Horrors, the nearly perfect 1982 musical that’s the centerpiece of this summer’s “Encores! Off-Center” series. (The two remaining performances are today at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.) In the dark before the purple curtain rose, the sound of the first guitar chords drew cheers of recognition; later, the evening’s big celebrity draw, Jake Gyllenhaal, though costumed for his role as the nebbishy Seymour Krelborn, was welcomed like a rock god. So too were the trio of singing urchins (Tracy Nicole Chapman, Marva Hicks, and Ramona Keller) who act as the show’s sassy chorus, and the adorable little boy (Anwar Kareem) who did nothing much but carry around the bloodlusting Venus flytrap that eventually (in a larger form played by Eddie Cooper) eats Cleveland. Saturday Night Live’s Taran Killam, making his New York stage debut as the sadistic, nitrous-oxide-huffing dentist Orin Scrivello, got laughs before he opened his mouth. It was that kind of evening. Even the dentist’s chair got entrance applause.

Gyllenhaal has already demonstrated his stage chops and his disinclination to dominate an ensemble in the play If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet, and in last season's superb Broadway two-hander, Constellations. If this brief run is an experiment to see if he's up to the challenge of doing a musical, he passes with flying colors. He may not have the vocal gusto of a Hugh Jackman, but his voice is sweet, expressive and tuneful — a natural extension of his endearingly nerdy characterization as the orphan taken in by crabby florist Mr. Mushnik (Joe Grifasi).
When Gyllenhaal chimes in with his yearning for an escape from a life of poverty and drudgery in the soul-stirring ensemble number "Skid Row (Downtown)," there's passion and sincerity in his singing. He nails the goofy comedy of "Grow For Me," pleading with the exotic plant discovery that is his one shot at becoming somebody. And in the show's soaring emotional crescendo, the glorious duet "Suddenly, Seymour," his timid declaration of love for co-worker Audrey is a perfect complement to Greene's exultant realization that someone decent might actually care for her. That number quite literally stopped the show and made the age gap between the performers disappear.
