When The World Was Young

Heath Ledger 1988Heath Ledger and unknown boy, 1988

Ah, the apple trees,
Blossoms in the breeze,
That we walked among,
Lying in the hay,
Games we used to play,
While the rounds were sung,
Only yesterday, when the world was young.

Nothing against Hathaway and Franco, but Ricky Gervais needs to host every televised award show from now until the end of time!

Believe it or not, LAOD managed to make profit!

"managed to make a profit" is not something you would brag about on your resume, lol.

After 3 flops and Nailed that is something to brag about :)

^^

It made 93 millions domestically and internationlly together. Which is ok. But it's probably mostly due to Hathaway's star power. The movie got buzz because of their chemistry (Anne can even have chemistry with a paper bag it seems) and Anne's performance.
W/o Anne's buzz, Jake probably wouldn't have received a GG nod. He probably wouldn't have received an Oscar nod for BBM either, if it weren't for Ledger being such a sure and strong contender for every award.

Anonymous said...

The only reason LAOD made money is that it only cost 38 mil to make. Chump change by HW standards. Not evidence that Jake can carry a film. Most of the audience came for Anne not Jake.

Jake is a good actor like it or not.

He is alright. But he's the weakest link in a group of really talented, versatile young actors like JGL, RG, JF, to name a few. Their acting is efforless, whereas Jake you can see he acts. It reminds me of DiCaprio, but DiCaprio has a charm on screen that Jake hasn't, although he has plenty off screen and DiCaprio doesn't.

If SC flops, which is likely, Jake will need a break and start with indie and supporting roles again. Leading man in mainstream movies didn't work out so far.

Anonymous said...

In 2007/8 many young actors, like the aforementioned, came out of the woodwork and showed their talent, whereas Jake chose mediocre scrips and showed that he is passable as actor, nothing really outstanding.
Either Jake works on his actin chops and chooses wiser projects or he'll end up like Bloom or Hartnett soon.

If one would take the time to read and be able to comprehend wordplay on the thread that this tweet is a part of, Austin and other tweeters were playing with actors' names and titles of movies.

What is sad is that you needed to have this explained and pointed out to you by someone who was one of the last of the human race to join Twitter.

I wonder if Natalie Portman will let the newly single Jude Law pat her belly and say hello to baby. He's presenting at the Oscars, and they did have a fling. Jude is another of those FWB we talked about.

Flings happen on set whether married or not. Even shy little Michelle had trailer banging sessions with Ewan McGregor during Incendiary filming while Ledger was still her boyfriend "officially".

Ewan attended the Indie Spirit Awards yesterday, but Michelle was conspicuously absent. She also ditched Incendiary promotion when it came out. Hm.

Danny Boyle: I have no idea what James Franco will be up to at the Oscars

Danny Boyle spent months working intimately with James Franco during production of "127 Hours," so they should know each other pretty well.

But when it comes to Franco's hosting gig during the Academy Awards on Sunday, Boyle said he's as unsure as the rest of us about how the quirky actor will pull it off.

"He'll be a surprise. He'll be unpredicatble. Maybe he'll bring out all his class along from college or something, I don't know what he'll do," Boyle said, chuckling at the possibilities.

The filmmaker, along with "127 Hours" screenwriter Simon Beaufoy and the film's real-life analog Aron Ralston, were at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday. And while it's been a long award season, Ralston -- who famously cut off his arm to escape from a canyon where he was trapped -- said he's not ready for it to end.

"It's almost this nostalgia already. These guys in the industry," he said, looking at Boyle and Beaufoy, "you get to go on to your next projects -- your next writing and directing. So it's kind of like [for me,] 'Well, this is it.' So I'm gonna miss you guys."

Boyle, who was on the award trail just two years ago for "Slumdog Millionaire," seemed ... less upset about the fanfare coming to an end.

"It's a funny business, but you do end up meeting again," he said. "It's weird. You kind of separate for years on things and then come back somehow."

James Franco To Ricky Gervais: Stay Away From The Oscars!
February 27th, 2011 Hollywood loves a good spat between two stars and this one looked set to be a doozy! On the eve of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, James Franco appeared to take a little offense at some monologue suggestions from controversial Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais.

The British funnyman posted his idea on his blog saying, “I’ve written a little opening in case they have a few minutes to fill.”

Franco: “You probably know me from 127 Hours where I play a man trapped in an enclosed space who decides he would rather cut his own arm off than stay where he was. Now that sounds “way out” but wait till half way through this f*cking ceremony and you’ll start to identify with him.”

Hathaway: “And I’m the new Catwoman. The first white woman to play that role since Michelle Pfeiffer. I want it to be an inspiration to all white people everywhere. Your dreams can come true in Hollywood too.”

Franco told E! News, “He did his award show and he bombed. Why is he trying to get in on ours? Horrible. His lines weren’t good on the Golden Globes. Why does he want to do our lines?”

However, Gervais responded writing, “Ha Ha. Amazingly some people thought that I wrote that intro to The Oscars, in the hope it might actually be used. Hilarious.”

He added, “I am still shocked by the existence of such stupidity in the world. As if I seriously thought if would ever be considered. It’s not like I sent it to the academy or even imagined they would read it.”

Franco’s crush on Anne said...

Hollywood actor James Franco had turned down the offer to host the Oscars at first, but said yes after he came to know that his co-host will be Anne Hathaway, who he hoped to hook-up with.

When Robin Roberts, host of US morning show Good Morning America, commented on the couple’s chem istry, the actor, who is also nominated in the Best Actor category for 127 Hours, said, “Well I’d admired her from afar for many years.”

“One of the reasons I was excited about Anne hosting was well, I thought maybe I had a shot but then I realised there is a boyfriend around so those dreams have been shot,” said the 32-year-old actor.

Franco tweeted a video of him and Hathaway rehearsing a dance routine from the musical Grease, dressed up as the lead characters Sandy and Danny. At the Oscar ceremony today, the two will make a mammoth five wardrobe change throughout the night and their opening act will
consist both of them acting out scenes from all the nominated films.

However, many guests are reportedly snubbing the singer's party to attend Franco's event. Oscar Reviews - Hollywood Reporter said...

"Franco flopped," one reviewer wrote, while another noted that "Hathaway worked her derriere off."

The reviews are coming in -- and several critics weren't very impressed with the performance of Oscar co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

Many seemed to agree that Hathaway gave it her all, but Franco didn't fare as well as his co-host.

"In what could go down as one of the worst Oscar telecasts in history, a bad and risky idea -- letting two actors host -- proved out in spectacularly unwatchable fashion on the biggest of all nights for the film world," The Hollywood Reporter's Tim Goodman wrote. "Despite an overall rewarding of brilliant performances and no truly shocking didn't-see-that-coming upsets, the 83rd Annual Academy Awards will likely be remembered as the night James Franco couldn't act like a host."

Goodman went on to say that "Anne Hathaway at least tried to sing and dance and preen along to the goings on, but Franco seemed distant, uninterested and content to keep his Cheshire-cat-meets-smug smile on display throughout."

That sentiment was shared by several critics.

"Hathaway worked her derriere off," The Washington Post's Hank Stuever wrote, "and Franco came off like that lacrosse boy you wish your daughter didn't hang out with so much, sort of heavy-lidded and smirky and ... well, let's give him credit for being James Franco, the 23-hour-a-day workaholic/grad student/filmmaker/soap-opera/not-best-actor wunderkind of his generation. Turns out hosting Oscars is when the dude decides to take a rest."

USA Today's Robert Blanco shared that opinion.

"At least Hathaway was in there pitching throughout -- unlike her co-host, who sometimes seemed to be preparing for a remake of Dazed and Confused," Blanco wrote.

Oscar Reviews said...

AllYourTV's Taylor White also wasn't impressed.

"There wasn't anything wrong with their hosting work tonight," White wrote. "They walked their way through the expected 'insert yourself into the movies' opening segment, and their banter seemed more appropriate for a Match.com commercial than a major awards program. They were personable and had some chemistry between them. But they were also instantly forgettable in the way that reminded me more of Julie Chen than Billy Crystal."

Moviefone's Alonso Duralde put it even more bluntly: "Franco flopped." He went on to suggest that David Letterman -- who notoriously bombed when he hosted the Oscars in 1995 -- did a better job than Franco and Hathaway did together.

"To be fair, Hathaway did seem capable of firing off the occasional one-liner, but Franco came off as a tad bewildered, as though he were working on a term paper during the commercial breaks," Duralde wrote. "Don't be surprised if their hosting gig gets mentioned in the same breath as such immortal Oscar disasters as 'Rob Lowe dances with Snow White' and 'that musical number featuring Telly Savalas, Teri Garr and Pat Morita.'"

Still, the reviews weren't all bad. Entertainment Weeky's Ken Tucker was full of praise for the two co-hosts.

"Funny, poised, relaxed, and smart, Anne Hathaway and James Franco made for marvelous Oscar hosts," he wrote. "Their combination of respect and informality struck the right tone for the night, a happily surprising production that had its share of fine moments both planned and ad-libbed."

Anonymous said...

well, let's give him credit for being James Franco, the 23-hour-a-day workaholic/grad student/filmmaker/soap-opera/not-best-actor wunderkind of his generation. Turns out hosting Oscars is when the dude decides to take a rest.

LOL :)

Anonymous said...

Anne did her best, but came off a little unnatural, Franco was like whatever. That guy has zero charisma and wit in real life. Good thing, he's a good movie actor.

Anonymous said...

Anne was like an over hyper cheerleader while Franco had a whatever attitude. Good for them they both are good actors.

But I will say this, Franco is VERY purty. Whoa. There were times when he was standing next to Hathaway I was thinking, omigod, he is gorgeous.

Anonymous said...

Yeah in some shots James was hot, in others he looked like a creepy vampire. LOL.

Poor Anne gave her best, I think Franco too, but they just didn't work well together and he is not the born host. ;)

Anonymous said...

So Franco didn't look/seem stoned? :)

Anonymous said...

IDK if he was stoned. He did say he doesn't do drugs. If he doesn't, it's just his personality.
But yes, he was like he always is.

Anonymous said...

I think Billy Crystal set the bar very high as an Oscar host, so very few can match it. I think James and Anne did ok. At least Anne had lots of costume changes into beautiful gowns. James is very laid back, but he is very James Dean good-looking. Michelle W. is turning into a beauty.

James Franco Skips His Own Oscar After-Party, Jets Out of Town said...

James Franco left L.A. immediately after the Oscars, tweeting photos from the airport and enjoying a Bloody Mary instead of attending his own after-party at The Supper Club. US Magazine:

While a few stars -- Seth Rogen, Kevin Spacey and stars of the CW's 90210 showed up -- Franco, 32, was a no-show, a source confirms to UsMagazine.com.

The Supper Club bash, the insider adds, was a "bust."

Franco seemed over it before it even began.

Gatecrasher noted, of the early exit: "We hear that he's heading back East immediately afterwards to finish a paper on Byron that's due for a class at Yale."

People were right, James was working on his paper and hosting Oscars :)

Jake looked fine last night. His tux was perfect. He read his lines well. He looked happy, especially at the after parties.

Anonymous said...

That sounds interesting about Franco especially since he was the one bragging about his own party. He sounded very enthusiastic about it last week.

Anonymous said...

I'm happy for Colin and Natalie, love them both :)

Anonymous said...

I saw Blue Valentine last week. There is no doubt in my mind now that Michelle got the nom thanks to the Weinstein Company and to snob public who likes what critics tell them to like.
There was nothing creative on her performance or her character. I really don't see what's so "great" about her acting.
This is just my opinion, not trying to be the troll of the day. But there was absolutely nothing outstanding in her BV performance. She was a good sport, though and kept he rmouth shut about the NC-17 rating.Instead of Gosling who fought them back...and then was overlooked.

Anonymous said...

From the first frame, I thought Michelle had her character down. She nailed it. She was defeated right from the start, having married someone that she liked and cared for, but didn't really love, due to her "situation" at the time. RG's character was happy with the status quo, and Michelle's wasn't, looking to better her station in life. Something to be said for both points of view, neither are wrong. But Cindy wasn't a happy camper at all in the relationship. The two different vehicles and songs on the radio as they were both separately driving in the beginning said it all. :)

Anonymous said...

RG's Peter Pan outlook on life was charming, but ultimately unlivewith-able for a long haul. Beautiful though, in his own way. Just different from Cindy. Michelle's character was quietly implosive. Sorry for any Spoilers!

Anonymous said...

He was a great Dad though, almost like she had two kids. :) Not wrong, but different.

kaydubby: "4. When Jake Gyllenhaal came out to present an award, James Franco gave him a little off-camera what’s-up-bro wave and head nod."

DVD review said...

"Love and Other Drugs" crumbles as a film because of an underwhelming lead performance by Jake Gyllenhaal and a poorly written script.

Gyllenhaal plays Jamie Randall, a Pfizer pharmaceutical representative. Jamie is able to charm everyone and sleep with anyone he wants. Really, Jamie is not much different than the Tom Cruise character in "Rain Man," a slick salesman who develops a soul. But Gyllenhaal can't match the charisma of a young Tom Cruise, and the character falls flat. It's not believable that he could woo women into his bed or doctors to switch to the prescriptions he's hawking. Tom Cruise or George Clooney could have killed this part, instead Gyllenhaal kills the movie.

Hathaway can often come off as whiny and annoying, but her performance is the highlight of the film, and some of her best work.

Eventually Jamie becomes the rep for Viagra (the film is set in 1996 when the drug begins to hit the market) and we are treated to unfunny jokes from 15-years ago. Writer/director Edward Zwick also seems bent on critiquing the drug industry, but he doesn't have anything fresh or interesting to say about it. While the film is not unwatchable, "Love and Other Drugs" isn't funny and Gyllenhaal isn't talented enough to make us care about the drama.

My opinion is that the movie wasn't good and Ryan and michelle looked as they were playing to be acting. But I agree it is all about personal opinions. Movies aren't good or bad, really. It's all subjective I guess...

Anonymous said...

It is all subjective, but there are movies who are objectively good, just like some people are objectively beautiful even when you don't care about their beauty :)

There's one (at least!) scene in BV that is so memorable, and Dean could steal anyone's heart with, when he helps out an elderly gentleman get settled in after moving to a retirement home. Great with kids and dogs too. Stealing a heart and keeping it were two different things. :(

Watch: James Franco and Anne Hathaway's 'Grease' Number That was Cut from the Oscars said...

Though the co-host tweeted a tease of this a few days before the show, Franco and Hathaway's "Grease" tribute and its cringe-inducing lyrics didn't make the cut. That 50's look always been a good one for Franco, though.

Ok,then I don't think BV is objectively good:In fact,I think is both subjectively and objectively crappy.

She was a good sport, though and kept he rmouth shut about the NC-17 rating.Instead of Gosling who fought them back...and then was overlooked.

Michelle more than deserved her second Oscar nomination.

DL comment said...

Franco wasn't bored. Stop trying to make excuses for him. That was a terrified Franco on that stage last night - a man who knew well before last night that he made a terrible mistake accepting the job. Charmless, stiff, afraid to commit to anything as far as performing was concerned. No way can he bring off Chance in "Sweet Bird" on Broadway. Like many film actors who work in bits and pieces in film, he showed he doesn't know how to connect and 'feed off' of a co-star in a live performance. Poor Anne Hathaway -you damn right she pushed a bit - she had to survive the whole thing. Poor Nicole Kidman- she has to be concerned about doing a play with him. I predict he backs out of Broadway.

Anonymous said...

The NC-17 rating for BV was a mystery to me. Black Swan's scene was almost the same. It could be because of the hotel room scene, Cindy just didn't seem to desire Dean. :(

Anonymous said...

And Cindy's experiences with the men in her life were a bit "complicated" shall we say, so she seemed to rely on herself mostly. :(

Who might the brunette be?

^^ said...

We hear Jake was looking comfy on a couch with a brunette, and shortly after he left, Swift arrived.

Purely coincidence though, right?

Oh, and Gyllenhaal was with a brunette date at Vanity Fair last night as well. Hmm...

Anonymous said...

A brunette? This can't be true. ;)

Anyway, it was probably his assistant/PR or a friend/acquaintance.

Anonymous said...

There was no brunette, Ted is imagining Jake's female dates - as usual.

Anonymous said...

Guys with dark or brown hair are called brunettes too, aren´t they?

Or is it just women?

Anonymous said...

Could be a man, but Ted is talking about a woman because it is mostly used to describe females.

I thought BV was a really good movie, and I thought Michelle and Ryan were fantastic in it. I think it takes a lot more talent to give a quiet, powerful performance than a showy over the top performance like Natalie in Black Swan. As a friend of mine mimicked, Natalie spent the movie making one awful face after another, and people call it great acting.

Anonymous said...

Michelle is a good actress. Oscar nod deserved. Natalie, however, is... Natalie Portman who had a great performance in a b.o. hit. Sure thing she won that Oscar.

That said, I think Michelle is a weird chica. Still, there is smth about her. I can't quit her. :)

Jake said...

James, were you trying to out Jake G. when you introduced him? You made some comment like, "He made out with my co-host - ON SCREEN!" Maybe it was just your awful delivery but I felt like you were trying to insinuate something.

Anne has a steady boyfriend, she was with him during LaOD filming and promo and is still with him. So, saying she made out with Jake "on screen" would be appropriate. Anyway, isn't everything scripted for the Oscars?

Not saying Jake is not gay, but I doubt James, uber intelligence, Franco tried to give secret messages about Jake's sexuality.

Taylor Swift reunited with her ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal on Sunday, February 27 after the former couple turned up to the same post-Oscars celebration. The stars were both guests at the Vanity Fair Academy Awards afterparty in Hollywood, and cut through any tension by chatting to each other upon their arrival.

An eyewitness tells People.com, "They were outside near the restroom having a discussion. It seemed a bit more serious - it certainly wasn't a, 'Hi, how are you?' talk." Swift and Gyllenhaal enjoyed a brief romance last year before splitting in December 2010. The blonde singer has since been linked to "Glee" star Chord Overstreet.

Taylor was spotted with Overstreet at a hockey game in LA on Thursday, February 24. She appeared to be cordial with Overstreet, which could mean that they are just friends. However, she has also been rumored to date his co-star Cory Monteith.

Jake Gyllenhaal & Taylor Swift's Oscar Party Run-In

When exes Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal bumped into each other at one of the Oscars's most exclusive afterparties, it didn't look like they were engaging in idle party chatter.

"They were outside near the restroom having a discussion," a guest at the Vanity Fair bash tells PEOPLE. "It seemed a bit more serious – it certainly wasn't a 'Hi, how are you?' talk."

The musician, 21, and the actor, 30, started dating last fall but broke up in December.

On Sunday night, Gyllenhaal and Swift were back together for a short visit at the party, and while there was no overt affection between the two. "It seemed like they were catching up," says the source, "sorting something out."

Soon after their chat, Gyllenhaal headed out while Swift stayed and partied with two girlfriends. "They completely kept to themselves," says the guest. "She couldn't be bothered by anyone."

Natalie Portman Condemns Galliano said...

The actress Natalie Portman, who has an endorsement contract with Dior for its Miss Dior Cherie fragrance, has strongly condemned its chief designer, John Galliano, for anti-Semitic remarks after a video surfaced of Mr. Galliano appearing to deliver a tirade in a Paris bar. In a separate incident, he was accused of verbally abusing a French couple last week in the bar. He was suspended Friday from Dior.

In a statement released Monday evening in Los Angeles, Ms. Portman said: “I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”

It was not known how Ms. Portman’s contract with Dior might be affected.

He also claimed Taylor was with the twit from Glee at one of the parties, again no mention of him there only in Ted's mind, she was there with a few girlfriends and then Emma Stone.

Surprise he didn't mention Mila Kunis

Last Name : Portman; stage name, which happens to be her maternal grandmother's maiden name. Reportedly first adopted because of fears she would discredit her parents in case her performance in The Professionnal was unsatisfactory. She has since kept the name in order to help maintain her privacy and to keep her family out of the spotlight. She does use her real name in school however.

Blind Vice! Dark Secret Could Ruin Fey Oiled-Tush said...

Feb. 22, 2011

Oh, Fey Oiled-Tush! How the mighty have fallen, and may fall even further down the carnivorous Hollywood food chain.

Last time we checked in with this married mega celebrity, he was mucho nervous, afraid his boy-on-boy mile-high club antics were going to be exposed by his pilot, whom Tushy treated with zero respect.

Well, if that wasn't bad enough...

We hear a major, major scandal is about to come seeping through the tabloids that will bring Fey—and his reputation he's tried so hard to keep in tact—down.

Fey Oiled-Tush has tons of secrets, like getting it on with dude after dude, but this particular skeleton in his well-guarded attic is nevertheless on the verge of being exposed. And it's something that's, uh, a little more complicated than simply being a good-looking closet-case in Hollywood.

See, some folks Oiled-Tush has gotten involved with behind the scenes are very bad people (even by Tinseltown standards, which is saying quite a lot). If those Fey's consorted with decide to air their dirty laundry on Fey, the onetime stud could quite practically be run right out of the business.

And Fey's lawful beard and family will all be hurt, no doubt about it, and he can kiss his career adios.

Despite this looming scenario, FOT finally booked himself a potential movie that could revive his career. But if this scandal comes out before its release date, the movie will be shelved—or at the very least, crushed (same difference). No family will go see this leading man in said blockbuster.

"I've never seen him so nervous," dishes our insider close to Fey, who very well knows what is at stake if these extra-dirty little secrets come out. "He knows that if this movie gets killed, he will never work in this town again." And Fey's nervousness is hardly without reason—as he's been told by his shady biz partners they aren't shy about leaking certain bits of damaging info they have on the dude.

Wonder what the darling wifey will do if all this threatened exposing comes to be? Certainly she won't want to stick around to be dragged down with him. Wife still has to have some brains, right?

And It Ain't: Kevin Bacon, Kevin Jonas, Marc Anthony

Yes, just like Ryan Gosling and Blake Lively, lol.

^^ Us Weekly said...

A source tells Us Weekly that Anne Hathaway, 28, and James Franco grew to "hate each other" as they rehearsed to host the Oscars Feb. 27.

"She had to provide all the energy -- he was just phoning it in," says a second insider. ("James seemed in his own little world," during the Oscar telecast, says another source. "Producers were pissed.")

In fact, as UsMagazine.com reported Monday, after the awards, Franco, 32, skipped his own party at L.A.'s The Writer's Room.

"He went immediately back to NYC because he was pissed about how the show went," adds a third source.

Franco's rep responds, "This is absolutely not true,” while Hathaway's rep says, "Anne had a wonderful experience with him."
