Love and Obstacles

Cynthia Nixon and family

October 4, 2010

This past weekend, the New Yorker held its annual festival, which -- as always -- includes a multitude of speakers and panels discussing a variety of topics. Top players in all professions were represented, including Stephen King, Malcolm Gladwell, Jake Gyllenhaal and Regina Spektor -- all chatting about themselves and their areas of expertise. Our favorite, though, would have to have been Cynthia Nixon on the panel discussion "Love and Obstacles: The Case for Gay Marriage."

Ms. Nixon, who is most known for her role has Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, and now is engaged to education activist Christine Marinoni, stole our hearts with her rather calm, well made argument. Not only does she make a good case, she makes an example of how to make said point.

“Gay people who want to marry have no desire to redefine marriage in any way. When women got the vote, they did not redefine voting. When African-Americans got the right to sit at a lunch counter alongside white people, they did not redefine eating out. They were simply invited to the table. And that is all we want to do. We have no desire to change marriage. We want to be entitled to not only the same privileges, but the same responsibilities as straight people.”

I was the one who stated the simple fact that NPH's show didn't appear to be hurt - and you were the one who seemed to have a problem with that, lol. Not everything has to become an argument, you know.

What problem? I've just posted another simple fact: 4 years later Matt Bomer thinks that his coming out would hurt his show. Is there something wrong with that small remark?

I think it can affect them, sure. I didn't say they were lying, I just agreed they were probably exaggerating. None of these people are naive when it comes to giving interviews and building up the "I suffer for my craft" thing makes a good interview. Anne's stuff about being a "wreck from start to finish" "totally" falling apart, crying "every day" sounds a bit over the top to me.

Baz Luhrmann Workshops ‘Great Gatsby’ With Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire & Rebecca Hall

Director Baz Luhrmann may be inching closer to his next feature film with a workshop reportedly taking place with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Rebecca Hall in preparation for his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s classic 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby.”

With a script by Luhrmann and Craig Pearce (”Romeo+Juliet,” “Moulin Rouge!”), the actors respectively read for Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway and Daisy Buchanan—the leading trio in the Jazz Age tale of the American dream embodied by Gatsby’s pursuit of his lost love as seen through the eyes of protagonist Carraway. Long time friends DiCaprio and Maguire were already rumored for the adaptation earlier this month with news of this workshop surely solidifying that link. Hall’s name, on the other hand, is entering the equation for the first time.

Prior to this, Amanda Seyfried was linked to the role of Daisy and there’s now word that Luhrmann is eyeing Natalie Portman for the instrumental role though any firm casting preference or decision is likely still months away. “You know I think of casting all the time,” the director had told MTV. “But I put that to the side and I complete the text. Obviously there are natural choices and there is a natural top of the list, but I really refuse to say anything until we have the text right.” The last major feature adaptation by Jack Clayton from a script by Francis Ford Coppola, of course, saw the leading roles filled by Robert Redford, Sam Waterston and Mia Farrow.

What can we gather from this workshop then? Probably not a whole lot. Luhrmann is a consistent workshopper known for doing so with “every script he’s considering” so we shouldn’t lock the Fitzgerald adaptation in as his next project just as yet—though with casting preferences now joining the director in preparation and a completed script in place, we’d be fairly surprised if the other contender; a mysterious New York-set musical, ended up preceding it. Earlier this month, the director set a deadline of “four to six weeks, no longer than six weeks” on a decision, so it shouldn’t too long until a confirmation is made anyway.

Co-produced by partner Catherine Martin, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher, Sony Pictures will be behind any potential production by Luhrmann.

'Alien' Casting Roulette

Anne Hathaway and James Franco are the latest stars to be linked to Ridley Scott's new Alien movie.

According to Bloody Disgusting, both Hathaway and Franco have expressed an interest in appearing in the science fiction prequel.

Natalie Portman, Noomi Rapace and Carey Mulligan have all been linked to the 20th Century Fox film in recent weeks.

Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof penned the script for Alien, which is due for release in 2011.

Sigourney Weaver, who is not expected to feature in the new movie, recently said of casting the Alien lead: "I think it's a trick thing because you want to get a good, young actress in there. But she should be very different from Ripley."

Walmart Sells "Ex-Gay" Kids Book

More than 100 Walmart stores are selling a book for kids and parents that suggests gay people can overcome “sin” and convert to heterosexuality with the help of counseling, according to Q Salt Lake.

Chased by an Elephant: The Gospel Truth About Today’s Stampeding Sexuality is written by Janice Barrett Graham, whose husband, Stephen, runs the antigay group Standard of Liberty.

In the book’s introduction Graham says she wrote the book to “help shed the clear light of truth on today’s dark and tangled ideas about male and female, proper gender roles, the law of chastity, and the God-given sexual appetite.”

Graham’s son Andrew claims he successfully changed his sexual orientation and is now a happily married man. In his book Captain of My Soul, Andrew Graham writes that he was “lured into same gender internet pornography during his high school years, and recruited into cursory homosexual experimentation with older men while at Brigham Young University.”

For the last two years, Walmart has scored just 40% on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index.

Anne's Vogue shoot behind the scenes + little interview

Anonymous said...

Anne should have been more careful about what she said.

Why?

"A real person who, in Love and Other Drugs, has a lot of steamy sex scenes. Hathaway is justifiably a little nervous about what the reaction will be. “This movie certainly has a lot of nerve,” she says, arching an eyebrow. “Oy. I hope that audiences are OK with all the nerve.” But in the end she felt the nudity was integral to who the characters are. “These are people who have no trouble taking their clothes off—in a way, their bodies are their currency,” she explains. “But they’re terrified of exposing their vulnerability, of becoming emotionally naked.”

It was that emotional baring it all that Hathaway found difficult, to say the least. “I was a wreck from start to finish,” she admits. “I think I cried every single day. I had to lean so much more heavily on everyone around me than I’m used to. I’m used to pulling my own weight. But I totally fell apart.”

^^^ cont. said...

The material hit close to home. “Look at where I was in my personal life,” Hathaway says, referring to her now-infamous split from the convicted Italian con man Raffaello Follieri. “Gosh, I hate talking about the breakup, because I don’t want it to define me, but as is to be expected, there were a lot of lingering trust issues. And I think that making a film about trust that required a great deal of trust—well, it was a challenge to get there.”

What problem? I've just posted another simple fact: 4 years later Matt Bomer thinks that his coming out would hurt his show. Is there something wrong with that small remark?

Yes there is. White Collar only started last October, so you're off by 3 years.

I don't know if it affects Matt's ability to come out, but the USA Network is a bit unusual in that right out of the gate it relies on the sale of a show overseas in order to make a profit. That is how they can put together good shows even though they don't get the number of viewers and same amount of ad revenues as the networks.

Anonymous said...

I'm not off, Matt Bomer said that about his show 4 years after NPH came out.
Matt knows about NPH and his show success, but that didn't change anything for him.

Anonymous said...

A couple key things. "How I Met Your Mother" has a very young audience who love that NPH is gay and out. His character is funny and over-the-top, not really meant to be swooned over. I don't know about the demographics for White Collar, but I'm betting the demographics are not nearly as young, and Bomer is definitely meant to be swooned over, lol. I'm not saying the show would fail if he did officialy come out. It might not make any difference. But he's not very closeted anyway, even poses for fan pictures with his partner's son.

One thing I find really interesting about Bomer and White Collar is the way they play up the bromance not only in the show, but between Bomer and DeKay, which seems to be genuine.

So it kind of turns on it's head the usual convention of playing up the chemistry and possible romance between the male and female lead of a show--and possible fauxmances and/or bearding ala Gossip Girl and OTH.

I do wonder if people would be bothered by the bromance if Bomer was out, and that is such a big component of the show.

destiny said...

Also a big part of marketing the show.

destiny said...

One more clarification, I wonder if USA worries that people would then be worried about the bromance, or that it would somehow take away from it. Not saying it's right to cater to that fear.

LAOD Review said...

Another not so satisfied viewer from imdb:

This IS a terrible film, but not for the reasons you highlight.
First of all, it is based upon a novel set in the nineties. The introduction and marketing of Viagra is a critical element of the story.

I found the film to be a tired retelling of a story so often told before: selfish womanizer meets artistic woman with fatal disease. They fall in love, they fall out of love, he realizes he cannot live without her, she realizes that, despite her illness, she can't live without him. Guess how it ends?

The satire of the pharmaceutical industry was right on, but very un-subtle.

Doesn't have a chance in the world of an Oscar.

Jake Gyllenhaal Confirms Cross-Dressing Fetish said...

What made Jake Gyllenhaal go gay in Brokeback Mountain?

A cross-dressing Gwyneth Paltrow...

When the hunkster introduced Paltrow last night at Elle's Women in Hollywood fete, he talked about how beautiful the Oscar winner looked in Shakespeare In Love but also pointed out she was "very convincing as a fine-featured young boy."

So much so, he cracked, "It was the experience of watching Gwyneth dressed as a young boy that immediately lead me to sign onto Brokeback Mountain." (If there is any truth to Jakey's story, we must take this moment to bow down and say, "Thank you, Gwyneth Paltrow.")

On a more serious note, but still getting laughs, Gyllenhaal gushed, "Bottom line, she's not a mere mortal like the rest of us. She's an internet savvy chicken cooking Academy Award winning octolingual something like that mother of two lifestyle guru…Thanks for making all of us look lazy."

Paltrow admitted she probably wasn't too easy to work with when she and Gyllenhaal shot Proof. "I was pregnant and I was a f--king nightmare hormonal…mess," she said, but added, "We managed to stay friends through it anyway."

There are scientists who allow for the existence of a higher power in their theories, and they are not all conservatives. If I thought there was nothing higher than mankind out there, a bleak thought, I'd probably end it all.

His one starring role so far was in The Social Network where he played a computer nerd, the furthest thing from an action hero. I think that's why Willis mentioned him. Willis is a cocky asshole in any case.

That doesn't sound unbelievable. The homophobia and hypocrisy within HW encourages actors to stay closeted and actively discourages them from coming out.

Hypocrisy indeed, since many in the business are gay or bi themselves.

I bet not only some regular folks or some people from media mocked them, but also some narrow-minded people from their own business (as unbelievable as it sounds).

I wouldn't be surprised if industry people mocked them behind their backs or even to their faces. What we know for sure is a lot of AMPAS members didn't even want to watch BBM and they still voted.

True. How sad and pathetic is that? :(

Terrible. :( It should never have been accepted. Not watching a film and then voting against it, or the bias against it.

Bitch Back

Dear Ted:
I insist you dish on three yummy boys who share a lot in common looks-wise. Zac Efron, Chace Crawford and Ian Somerhalder! These boys need to play brothers stat, no? All three are known B.V.ers, so I was wondering if their dirty deeds have any similarities, or are they each in their own respective classes of naughty? Much love to ya, even if you won't spill!
—Jen

Dear Pretty in Vices:
Sure, they share a lot more in common than just their oh-so-delish looks. Two of ‘em more than the third though. Can you guess which guy is the odd Vice out?

Dear Ted:
After hours of thinking, I figured out why people have a problem with your gay Vices. Reading the archives, most of your Vices are not only gay but have multiple partners, "enforcing" the notion that gays cannot have committed relationships. I honestly don't believe this (then again I'm gay...), but there is that stereotype that we just go around and hump anything we want. Well that's mostly for men, but for women like me, we are only "experimenting," such as the case for one of your Vices, but in most instances, we lezzies are actually seeking a relationship. Maybe if you found a Vice who was on the down low, but in a committed relationship with their same sex partner it wouldn't be as bad? I mean Ricky Martin and Neil Patrick Harris can only do so much.
—D0li

Dear Humping Ph. D:
Men are dogs, gay and straight. I really think that's the taint that's going on here, and not a sexual-orientation one, specifically. Sorry, really do think it's that simple.

Dear Ted:
Do you realize that you are jumping all over the place with the Judas Jack-Off B.V.? In a recent B.B. you suggested that he and Dashed don't have much acting experience, but in the first Judas B.V. you said he had a good pro resume. Which is it? I'm thinking you are trying to throw us off track, but if these two are really not actors can you just not Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki already?
—CH

Dear Jacking Off:
Not jumping around at all. Judas, certainly, is a star. He's been in some majorass stuff. That said, he hasn't really impressed me with his acting (and I'm not alone on that opinion). Does that answer your question?

Or, is it their rule to only paint the conservative right and tea party in a very bright and good light and the left as Us against them attitude? The regular media "Does" talk about most everything "politica"l from both points of views.

I'm a liberal too, but I don't blindly follow anything or anyone. I take my blinders off.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL SURROUNDED BY EMOTIONAL LEADING LADIES ON SET: ANNE HATHAWAY AND GWYNETH PALTROW

LOL. Looks like.

Jake Gyllenhaal was looking cheerful and gave the thumbs up as he was leaving the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills yesterday despite the recent news that poor old Anne Hathaway, his co-star in Love And Other Drugs, didn't have the best time on set with him.

Now obviously the thought of having sex, albeit pretend acting sex, with Jake Gyllenhaal would leave most of us in a sweat, but Anne Hathaway broke out in a rather more nervous kind of sweat, as she was absolutely terrified of her raunchy sex scenes with Jake.

She told Vogue in a recent interview; "These are people who have no trouble taking their clothes off -- in a way, their bodies are their currency. I was a wreck from start to finish. I think I cried every single day, I had to lean so much more heavily on everyone around me than I'm used to. I'm used to pulling my own weight. But I totally fell apart,"

Anne's not the only emotional co-star that Jake's had to deal with in the past, Gwyneth Paltrow says she was a ' f****** nightmare hormonal mess,' on the set of 2005's Proof. However she definitely had an excuse, as she was pregnant at the time and the Oscar winner went on to praise her younger co-star, saying, 'Jake is gorgeous and hilarious.” So at least we know it's not Jake causing the problems.

Love And Other Drugs hits UK cinema's on the 31st of December 2010.

Sounds like there isn't much glamour during love scenes - although I do think it still happens occasionally where two can become smitten. ;)

Maybe they thought it was just better to leave it alone. ;)

Anne Hathaway has no problem going naked on set -- as long as she's not the only one.

In the November issue of Vogue, the actress revealed she had a tough time going nude for "Love and Other Drugs," Edward Zwick's dramedy co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a Viagra Salesman.

"These are people who have no trouble taking their clothes off -- in a way, their bodies are their currency," she told the fashion magazine. "But they're terrified of exposing their vulnerability, of becoming emotionally naked."

The 27-year-old "Rachel Getting Married" star said she "totally fell apart" during the shoot, until director Edward Zwick stepped out from behing the camera.

"I said, 'What do you want me to do?'" he said, according to nymag.com. "And they said, 'You take your clothes off,'"

Zwick got into bed with the two stars and posed for photographs with them to lighten the mood.

"[The art director] stripped me out and put Annie's head on Jake's shoulder, and that's the movie poster," he told the magazine.

The "Love and Other Drugs" set was not the first in which Gyllenhaal had to deal with an emotional co-star. According to usmagazine.com, Gwyneth Paltrow was a "mess" while shooting their 2005 film, "Proof."

Another negative review from imdb:

Hard-partying, emotionally-detached man meets sensitive, artist woman with fatal disease. They fall in love. They fall out of love. Will man come to his senses? Will woman allow herself to feel love despite downhill course of disease? Will the sappy music ever stop? Will we keep watching this dreck? Will attractive people getting undressed and having sex keep our attention? You know all the answers to these questions, as this film is just a rehash of dozens that came before it.

The film raises, without subtlety, some questions society needs to confront: the role of the pharmaceutical industry in the medical-industrial complex, how we treat people with incurable diseases, how people with incurable diseases search for cures and what to wear to a pajama party.

Perhaps I should give this film more credit for avoiding flatulence, it nevertheless gives us a few laughs on the subject of erectile dysfunction and its cures, masturbation, three-way sex and internet porn. So original.

Ed Zwick was obviously joking, why would he need to do that after Jake and Anne spent most of the movie naked and screwing, LOL!!!

I think Ed was reacting to why Jake had his mouth covered in the poater at that Q&A and he made up the story and jake went along.

It was a joke. If there was anyphotoshopping of Anne it could be that she wasn't available for the shoot, it happens all the time.

A joke repeated as it were the truth, more lazy "journalisM"
