A Place in the Sun

Montgomery Clift

during shooting of 'Red River', circa 1948

The Advocate: There are so many biographies of Montgomery Clift and numerous websites devoted to him. What was the biggest surprise you learned about him while researching your book?
Amy Lawrence: I was most impressed by Clift’s canny understanding of his own image. Many biographers depict him as refusing to participate in the Hollywood star system, but that didn’t mean he was ignorant of it. He understood how an actor’s image was built and maintained. In giving interviews or choosing roles, he knew exactly how to shape a performance to achieve the effect he wanted — and to resist the efforts of others to simplify a character. For instance, he was aware that screenwriters and directors often wanted to make the hero perfect; Clift wanted to make the character human, complicated, and not always admirable.

Q: Clift is often spoken of in context as a “gay actor” or in conjunction with Marlon Brando and James Dean. What do you see as Clift’s singular legacy?
A: Brando and Dean both thought of Clift as singular. Brando saw Clift as his only major competition, and Dean saw him as a model, an ideal to emulate. Unlike those performers, Clift’s best work has not become dated. In Red River, From Here to Eternity, A Place in the Sun, I Confess, and half a dozen others, his performances are impeccable. At his best he is never mannered or predictable. His performances are subtle, intelligent, graceful, and deeply empathetic regardless of the character’s flaws.

Q: How did Clift’s being gay — or bisexual, as some suggest — when it was still taboo affect his drinking, drug taking, and ultimate downward spiral?
A: The homophobia of the time, which intensified nationally just as Clift’s career was beginning in the late 1940s and early ’50s, certainly exerted pressure on Clift. A serious relationship with choreographer Jerome Robbins in the ’40s threatened both their careers when Robbins was blackmailed into testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings regarding communists and other “subversives” in Washington and the entertainment community. I would be hesitant, though, to cast Clift as a “sad young man,” “self-loathing homosexual,” or fit him into any other category into which gay men were sorted from the 1950s to ’70s. Alcoholism affects everyone, and in the postwar period heavy drinking was routine across the board. By the time Clift’s drinking became full-blown alcoholism, it was impossible to disentangle from his devastating car accident, the prescription painkillers he needed at the time, and his professional fear regarding the damage done to his face. In the latter part of his career, his drinking and drug taking were so dominant in his life that he couldn’t function without them. Paradoxically, at the point when he worked with unsupportive or openly hostile homophobic producers and directors, the drugs and drinking sustained him as much as they destroyed him.

Q: You write about the fan magazines of the 1950s that frequently used sexually suggestive headlines such as “Who Is Monty Kidding?” How well known was the truth about Clift’s sexuality during that era?
A: Clift worked in a period when fan magazines were challenged by scandal magazines, each promising “the truth” about stars’ private lives. Ironically, even the scandal rags did not want any “truth” firmly established because that would rob them of the chance to repeatedly tantalize readers with the next promised exposé. Biographical information suggests that people who worked with Clift always “knew” in exact proportion to what they wanted to know. Fans likewise. Everyone minimized the complexity of Clift’s emotional relationships — with men, older women, young women — in order to maintain the image of the actor that appealed to them most.

Q: A recent article in Newsweek suggests audiences can’t accept gay actors as romantic leading men when we know the truth about their real-life sexuality and uses Rock Hudson as an example. How do you think this applies to Clift, who had such intense chemistry on-screen with Elizabeth Taylor and other actresses?
A: When audiences think they know something about an actor’s personal sexuality it becomes available as a touchstone to spectators watching a performance but is never mandatory. People judging a performance often appreciate it most the more it varies from what we think we know about the performer — casting against type, nice people playing psychos, beautiful actresses playing ugly. If we think of Clift as an actor, then his persuasiveness as a romantic lead opposite Taylor, Olivia de Havilland, or Jennifer Jones increases our appreciation of his skill as he seems to become inseparable from the role.

Another issue is history itself. As new generations are introduced to Clift and Hudson, they often react to the performers without knowing any biographical information about them. They are also less invested in “the truth” than those who experienced a change in their perception through revelations and the exposure of secrets. The freer sexuality of Brando or Dean, for instance, has not come to dominate their images.

Q: How do you think Clift would have fared personally and professionally if he began his career today, with the intrusion of the Internet and paparazzi?
A: The intrusion of the media today is offset by the openness of some gay performers — though not romantic leading men just yet. As Tom Cruise’s career shows, it is possible to withstand rumors and media speculation if you have the power and the will to do so. Because Clift was never as closeted as Rock Hudson, I don’t believe he would fight terribly hard to maintain the illusion of offscreen heterosexuality. He might be more likely to take a Keanu Reeves approach, where the actor neither courts nor tries to dispel the fantasies of any fan. In several roles in the severely repressive 1950s he even courted audiences to read his characters — and maybe himself — as gay in the casually flirtatious scenes in Red River, the rejection of heterosexual relationships in I Confess, Suddenly, Last Summer, and Freud, the material on gay Army life that acts as a subtext throughout From Here to Eternity, and the relationship with Frank Sinatra’s character in the film.

Is Jake in LA?

He was seen at LAX a few days ago, no indication whether he was departing or arriving though. But previously to that sighting there was one sighting of him and McBongo on MV, so I'd say it was him arriving back in L.A. He's probably in L.A. now.

Neil Patrick Harris: Used to slut around in the NYC Broadway world, but his new celebrity status has made him quite the role model for commitment and marriage and he is keeping to it.

Jake Gylenhaal: Slutted around big time until the tabloids started to catch up with him - call it post Austin withdrawals. Now he sluts around very, very quietly.

Zac Efron: Has the tightest leash in showbiz. If Zac even makes eye contact with another guy, his agency slaps him. The Hollywood system is power.

Hayden Christensen: Is still dealing with heart break fallout. He should be married and as a Canadian, he is able to get married. But he goes on and on about being dumped, etc. etc.

Johnny Weir: Could slut around big time, but he insists that his tricks kiss his ring first. The ones that do, are not his type.

Kevin Spacey: Is still twinking but it is costing increasingly more money now. Plus, Kevin is getting sexually weird, which freaks out the Twinks.

Brian Singer: Is still trying to be the slut he always wanted to be. It is ego.

David Geffen: Is too old for sex, so it is safer for the street kids.

Elton John: Is post sex. It surprises me that he still is against equal marriage.

Dominic Monaghan: Is still playing the "game", but nobody is watching it anymore. He doesn't see that. Elijah does.

Kenney Chesney: Still sings for sex, as much as he can get.

"All I know about Rachel Billson is she was in "The O.C." and she dated the guy from the series, who, I'm almost positive, is gay. Adam."

A long time ago Perez (before he got sucked into the anti-bearding publicist's game) strongly implied Jake G and Adam from the OC may have had some sort of fling in Toronto at the film festival. He was going to report some 'exciting news!' and drew hearts on pics of Adam and Jake stuck next to each other, well hearts on Jake's sunglasses and a heart on Adam's crotch area.

But...the story never happened. Something happened and he never printed. Maybe he got his wires crossed (Adam looks like Austin Nichols) or he could have been advised not to go public by someone.

I also think Trent at Pink knew someothing. He too was going to report some 'exciting news' on Jake around the same time but never did. It was all very strange.
---
Btw, with relation to Trent, his news wasn't about the Adam thing as far as I know but relating to Brokeback Mountain at a time when it was rumoured Jake was going to use BBM as a vehicle to come out. Whatever 'news' it was - that also never occured either.

I loved today's post, Jackie. Great job and very interesting and informative. I think it's amazing that as far as we've come with bringing the GLBT population out of hiding, so many of them are still in hiding if they are in the public eye.

I posted a ? yesterday asking if any of the other readers here thought that Bilson PR and JBG's PR were on the same page about the rumors. Someone gave me some hell about it, of course, which i don't really understand. IMO - and this is only my opinion - celebs at a certain level become just as much of a commodity as they are a person. Since we know that everyone generally keeps everyone else's secrets out there, it seems a bit dicey on Jake's part to get hooked up with someone who is mostly noted for being a beard. I'm surprised that he would go along with that, but at the same time, i'm surprised that her peeps would drag him into it without his permission. Since it hasn't gone away, it feels manufactured.

Which brings us back around to the post today: Can a guy be himself and be a movie star. I like what the author said: it's touches on the strength of their talent when they can play a role so convincingly when it's opposite of their true nature.

That makes me wonder about the level of Jake's skills. He played Jack Twist so convincingly, but in POP, he didn't have the sharpness or the edge he needed to convince me. He was a cute boy doing stunts, finally forced to let the girl tag along because he couldn't get rid of her. I never believed that he wanted her at all.

just some thoughts. thanks for the post. s.

Only a very rare and special people, gay or straight, can be themselves and be movie stars. The rest have to work hard to sell the right image.

Jakes people have already denied the rumour. IMO Rachel Bilson needs a bit publicity and since she has no new project dating rumour is the best thing she can get at the moment.

I don´t think Jake would like to be involved in such a nonsense again.

50 years ago it was easier for the stars to live their life privately - no twitter, blogs, mobile phone pictures and people were not so obsessed with the private/sex life of the actors.

IMO Jake destroyed much of his positive image during the Reese years, especially with the overexposure in the tabloids, pap pics. And then the decision to do PoP - most reactions were negative even from people who ususally like Jake.

There is much competition in HW and some excellent actors in Jakes age - J. Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, James Franco, M. Fassbender - just to name a few, and they are all up for the good projects and they are taking their craft serious.

I hope that LAOD will be successful and the audience will love the film - it would bring Jake back in the race when it comes to casting the good roles.

Jakes people were quick to deny the Rachel rumor. Quickest response ever as she is well know to be a professional beard. The last thing he needs is to be linked to her. It still keeps showing up on the web though. Not sure if it is from people who are slow to keep up or who are secretly trying to sabotage him and keep those gay rumors on the front page. Not that there is anything wrong with being gay. Im just glad to see that he is not bearding anymore. Must be driving his handlers nuts.

S, I'm not sure whether or not we can judge that "it hasn't gone away." Once something is out there, it can take on a life of its own on the internet without any help from anyone. So the same basic story just gets repeated in different places because bloggers, gossip sites, etc. just grab stuff from each other and it may not be a case of something not going away because there is new info to keep the rumor going.

LOL how we saw weekly/2x week pap pics of Reeke and now it's 2x a month for Jake if we're lucky but damn it's still weekly for the Chin. She keeps to her schedule! Another thing that makes me LOL is how all her pap pics announce she's with JIM TOTH! Who the fuck is Jim Toth, a celeb/person/CAA flunkie the public should care about?! It's so obvious that she's trying to sell him as someone special, a big name in HW, to make herself look better. When the truth is nobody worth their IMDb in HW would be caught dead bearding or fake dating with her.

Reese & Jim get papped a lot, but i don't see the magazines running many of the pictures. They've run a couple - they were in people this week - but i think it's obvious she alone isn't enough to spark much interest and he's a total buzz kill. He's not attractive and he dresses for shit and wears those awful hats that make him look even more ridiculous than he has too.
I looked at the most recent batch at JJ and there is actually a picture there of him holding the door for her while she got in the car - something immature, bratty Jake never did, apparently. That struck me as funny - she is so determined to make her point. Wtfe.
It seems that without an interesting boytoy, she can't really command much page time in the magazines. Since there aren't many pictures of Jake around these days, i don't think we can determine much about his interest. I do think it's interesting that - of the last pics posted on the internet of him, all of them ick - i haven't seen any of them pop up in a magazine. Wonder why? Do you think they are feeling sorry for him? S.

PS: Good points about gybil. I will not think about it anymore unless new stuff comes out. :)

A question about journalistic integrity in the world of Blind Vice gossip. I'm sure you get all sorts of info from all sorts of sources on what our favorite Blind Vicers are up to, but how do you manage to distinguish between a source that is actually in the know and sources that are just making stuff up? If you posted a Vice only to find out later that the source that gave you the info was bogus would you retract it or just leave it as is given that, other than yourself, no one else really knows the true identify of the Vicers?

Dear Source Code:
Verify, verify, then double verify. The E! legal team isn't around just to be intimidating, they, ya know, do stuff, too. So, do I! It's a tough job researching all this debauchery.

Dear Bearded Blunder:
Not until his next role requires him to. It's what all these dudes do during their down-time between flicks: him, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brad Pitt. Seems most people prefer them all fresh-faced, but, I don't mind a little scruff.

Dear Ted:
I don't understand how a married beard, like the wife of Seymour Plow-Me-More, for example, can be content with her love life. How does this work. Does she know he's gay? Is she a lesbian? Or does she just not want true love for herself?

Gosling:

Ryan, too, found the sex scenes taxing. "You mean the trying-not-to-have-sex sex scene? It was hard…a lot of times actors can trick people into thinking something is happening when it’s not happening, and we had to call ourselves out on anything that didn’t feel honest," Ryan said. "Actors become very professional and proficient about watching out for each other’s light and not stepping on each other’s lines. All of these things are artificial, and you have to strip that away if you’re going to achieve a sense of intimacy. In real life sex is messy, and we wanted to get at that wonderful messiness."

trying-not-to-have-sex sex scene?

I wonder how far some actors actually go during love scenes for the sake of making it look real?

Anonymous said...

12:20 pm, You mean if penetration is involved? LOL. Have you ever been on a set? It's about 30 guys and if you're an actress, chances are likely you're one of the few women (if any) on the set. So then you do your love scene and there are 30 guys surrounding you, glowering at you (because god forbid something wrong happens and they have to work overtime or their lunch gets delayed), thinking you're an asshole (mind you--many are veterans and they have worked on PLENTY of movies where they've worked on similar scenes) and the director is yelling at you, "Passion. I want to see more passion!"

(I witnessed this by the way).

I give high marks to actors for making love scenes look believable considering the insanity of the circumstances.

Anonymous said...

Go where, lol? I doubt their colleagues would have sex just to make it look real + filming technique don't allow actors to do it for real.

Anonymous said...

All of these things are artificial, and you have to strip that away if you’re going to achieve a sense of intimacy.

From the short scenes I've seen already, I very much get the feeling of simply being a fly on the wall - it doesn't have a "movie" feel about it at all, it's like there's a hidden camera just watching real people and it almost makes you uncomfortable, like you shouldn't be intruding on their private lives. That's the best kind of "acting."

destiny said...

No doubt in my mind that stars who have to work together very closely and/or have sex scenes together can end up involved with each other as a result.

I saw a play years ago with Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci that had sex scenes between the characters, and as my girlfriend said, you could just tell there was some real heat between them. Sure enough, they ended up having an affair as a result of working together in scenes like that, even though Tucci was married at the time. He later went back to his wife.

Tim Gunn Is Not Out To His Mother said...

Or at the very least, they don't talk about why he's a 57-year-old man who has yet to find that special lady.

Still out pimping his book, Gun says about his relationship with mama: "On the one hand she is a Chatty Cathy and can talk a blue-streak, on the other hand, she is not comfortable discussing anything personal. Like the chapter in my book says, sometimes you really should just keep your mouth shut! (Laughs.) Now, if I was to bring a guy home, I wouldn’t blind-side her with him. I would make an advance visit and test the waters."

Tim should try this one out: "Tomorrow one of my friends is going to stop by. He's also my roommate. And we picked out fine china together. And he makes a mean paella. And he's gay." If she blinks twice, coast is clear.

Watch: Julianne Moore Appears in First Ad in HRC Series of New Yorkers for Marriage Equality said...

In July I posted about a new effort by the Human Rights Campaign toward marriage equality in New York. The Campaign for New York Marriage, headed by Brian Ellner, has just launched the first in a series of ads intended to lobby public support for the issue.

The NYT reports:

"The timing of commercials is deliberate, and revealing: With the front-runner in the governor’s race, Andrew M. Cuomo, the Democratic attorney general, pledging his support for same-sex marriage, and the Legislature in Democratic hands, advocates are pushing for a new vote early next year. 'We want to build excitement and momentum in advance of that,' said Ellner...As part of that strategy, the Human Rights Campaign and its allies are spending heavily to oust three New York state senators — all Democrats — who voted against the marriage bill last year and who face opponents in the primary on Tuesday: William Stachowski of Buffalo, Shirley L. Huntley of Queens and Rubén Díaz Sr. of the Bronx."

Along with Moore, the ads will feature Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Rev. Al Sharpton Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Whoopi Goldberg, Fran Drescher, Tom Colicchio, and Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, the widow of Arthur Ashe.

CUT A REDBAND TRAILER

I walked out of the advanced screening I attended of this movie excited for the first time in awhile about a movie. I always have an opinion about a film going in and am rarely surprised. I was floored by this one but wondered how the film makers would cut a trailer for it. I understand the difficulty involved with trying to categorize this movie into brackets. The film makers decided to cut 2 trailers, 1 being a typical rom-com style preview and the 2nd a slightly funnier but still not provocative trailer. After the trailer, the boards around here rightfully went crazy about how the oscar buzzed about movie was just another typical rom-com. I don't blame you IMDBers. If I didn't already see the movie, I wouldn't be slightly interested in seeing it. Ed Zwick would have been a redeeming favtor though. All I can say is give this movie a shot. Its way, way, way, way, way, more Knocked Up than the trailer makes it look. They are going for the female audience when in reality they were already going to come to this movie.

This is a call to whoever is marketing this movie. TRUST ME. Cut a redband trailer and put it online and get some guys really talking about this film. Save the image of this movie! I know you are disappointed with our reactions to the trailer. Show what the movie is really all about without giving away too much of course. Show the cussing and dirty jokes. The debauchery and nudity. The corporate scheming and the sexual encounters. Thats what was appealing about the movie. It is utterly provocative and the trailer makes it look like a cookie cutter, happy couple story. PLEASE SAVE THIS FILM AND CUT A REDBAND TRAILER!!!

Not only is Austin the Live Music Capital of the World — it’s also the “Capital of Copulation,” at least according to Men’s Health magazine’s October issue.

Austin has also spread the, er, love to Dallas, which is ranked No. 2. As Texans know, size does matter: the second-largest state in the union has seven of the top 15 sexually charged cities on the list, which is appropriately called “America’s Hotbeds of Sex.”

The magazine says Austin is, ahem, on top based on condom sales, birth rates, sex toy sales, and rates of STDs.

Ryan Reynolds and Bradley Cooper may be a couple of the busiest actors in Hollywood right now but that hasn’t stopped them from shopping for new projects.

Now, it sounds as if the A-list actors are about to team up for a new buddy cop movie.

Risky Business reports that Reynolds and Cooper are in the process of signing onto an original untitled action-comedy about, “two friends, who are also San Francisco cops, whose fathers were once partners on the police force. The older generation is forced out of retirement to help their sons crack a case, with typically antagonistic results.”

Before non-action fans write-off the movie, you should know the script was written by Sheldon Turner – who just won an Oscar for co-writing the Up in the Air script. Apparently, he fetched a seven-figure payday for his work on the upcoming buddy cop film.
...
The film is said to have an “updated Lethal Weapon flavor that plays into edgier R-rated territory.” However, with two megastars like Reynolds and Cooper involved, it’s possible the film will get toned down for a PG-13 rating – in order to snag a wider audience (specifically the girls who go crazy for the actors).

I agree about Gosling being rather on the average side re. looks. But he's the best male actor of his age group, hands down. Anne w/o make up isn't anything special either imo. Michelle is obviously much prettier. Jake is pretty too, of course. :D

No matter the looks, it's important to deliver a good performance. And I hope Jake and Anne did. I mean there's buzz right now about LAOD...it would suck if the movie and/or performances wouldn't be that good in the end. I want Jake to be in a good movie and give a good performance at last.

Kieron Richardson, Star of British TV Drama Hollyoaks: I'm Gay said...

Actor Kieron Richardson, who plays Ste Hay in the popular Channel 4 UK soap Hollyoaks, revealed on a morning show this morning that not only will his character be having a gay relationship, but he is gay too.

Said Richardson:

"When I was on Dancing on Ice, newspapers speculated and tried to say we kind of know and if you want to say you can do your story with us and get it out there. At that point, my personal life took a back step and it was more about the competition and trying to get through the next week rather than get a few column inches in the newspaper and maybe raise my profile at the time. But it wasn't about that. But now I feel that it's relevant and the storyline's relevant to some situations in my life then if maybe I can help people that are going through the same thing then it's a bonus."

Oh, he's playing word games, for sure. But here's the part that makes me think it's also a veiled reveal (which kind of outs Travolta if people make the connection and believe it):

And geez, with details like those the NE is "exclusively dishing," you'd think they're trying to earn John a top spot in our Blind Vice Hall of Fame!

The way he put "exclusively dishing" in quotes is like he's taking a dig at the NE because Ted's been "dishing" about "Seymour" and his antics for years. I think Ted's trying to say that he had the scoop first, not them.

Anonymous said...

"But he's the best male actor of his age group, hands down."

Thats arguable and IMO he is not. His shtick sometimes is getting on my nerves.

There are some other guys with the same range and they are all up for the good movie parts.

It also does matter how something is received by the audience.
In this case I would assume that LAOD will be more a kind of crowdpleaser, and what I saw and read about Blue Valentine looks more like the depressing kind of film.....

And IMO for Jake at the moment a Box Office success is more important than awards - although he got good reviews for "Brothers" I am not sure how he is seen among the "officials" or what kind of reputation he has.

Very much so.

Anonymous said...

IA. I do think LAOD is going to be a crowd pleaser. I think they're going to push the "debauchery and nudity" when the promotional tour takes place - Jake already got a start on that with all the merkin stuff, and so did Anne when she went on Kimmel. Expect more of that, plus if it is "way more Knocked Up" the word of mouth will spread quickly.

Anonymous said...

I think Ted's trying to say that he had the scoop first, not them.

That makes sense, a bit of bragging is understandable :)

Anonymous said...

if it is "way more Knocked Up" the word of mouth will spread quickly

But shouldn't trailers try to sell "more than just another romantic comedy"?

Anonymous said...

Sometimes you just have to be at the right time and right place and everything fits together - for Jake it was BBM, JGL with "500 Days" and "Inception" and James Franco for "Milk" and now "127 hours". Good acting combined with Box Office.

But if you look at Hayden Christensen - he was panned as A. Skywalker (although it was mostly Lucas fault - the dialogue was unbelievable cheesy) and his career has gone downhill from there....and it becomes more difficult getting the good parts. Same with the "Hobbits" Elijah Wood and Dominic Monaghan. They were on top of the world - and now they are getting parts in B-class films at best.

Anonymous said...

That gives me hope that Twilight actors will soon go away, lol.

Anonymous said...

But shouldn't trailers try to sell "more than just another romantic comedy"?

Sure, I agree they should. I thought there were glimpses of that "debauchery" in the trailers but maybe not enough. Maybe we'll get a third trailer? idk, but trailers aren't the only way to promote, that's why the actors go on all the talk show and do interviews. They usually bring clips when they do talk shows and hopefully it will be stuff that isn't in the trailers.

Yes, I agree. I haven't seen "127 Hours" yet, but it sounds intriguing. They all seem to have this quality where they reach in, grab your heart and break it, at least in these films.
