A Place in the Sun

Montgomery Clift
Montgomery Clift rolling cigarette
during shooting of 'Red River', circa 1948

The Advocate: There are so many biographies of Montgomery Clift and numerous websites devoted to him. What was the biggest surprise you learned about him while researching your book?
Amy Lawrence: I was most impressed by Clift’s canny understanding of his own image. Many biographers depict him as refusing to participate in the Hollywood star system, but that didn’t mean he was ignorant of it. He understood how an actor’s image was built and maintained. In giving interviews or choosing roles, he knew exactly how to shape a performance to achieve the effect he wanted — and to resist the efforts of others to simplify a character. For instance, he was aware that screenwriters and directors often wanted to make the hero perfect; Clift wanted to make the character human, complicated, and not always admirable.

Q: Clift is often spoken of in context as a “gay actor” or in conjunction with Marlon Brando and James Dean. What do you see as Clift’s singular legacy?
A: Brando and Dean both thought of Clift as singular. Brando saw Clift as his only major competition, and Dean saw him as a model, an ideal to emulate. Unlike those performers, Clift’s best work has not become dated. In Red River, From Here to Eternity, A Place in the Sun, I Confess, and half a dozen others, his performances are impeccable. At his best he is never mannered or predictable. His performances are subtle, intelligent, graceful, and deeply empathetic regardless of the character’s flaws.

Q: How did Clift’s being gay — or bisexual, as some suggest — when it was still taboo affect his drinking, drug taking, and ultimate downward spiral?
A: The homophobia of the time, which intensified nationally just as Clift’s career was beginning in the late 1940s and early ’50s, certainly exerted pressure on Clift. A serious relationship with choreographer Jerome Robbins in the ’40s threatened both their careers when Robbins was blackmailed into testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings regarding communists and other “subversives” in Washington and the entertainment community. I would be hesitant, though, to cast Clift as a “sad young man,” “self-loathing homosexual,” or fit him into any other category into which gay men were sorted from the 1950s to ’70s. Alcoholism affects everyone, and in the postwar period heavy drinking was routine across the board. By the time Clift’s drinking became full-blown alcoholism, it was impossible to disentangle from his devastating car accident, the prescription painkillers he needed at the time, and his professional fear regarding the damage done to his face. In the latter part of his career, his drinking and drug taking were so dominant in his life that he couldn’t function without them. Paradoxically, at the point when he worked with unsupportive or openly hostile homophobic producers and directors, the drugs and drinking sustained him as much as they destroyed him.

Q: You write about the fan magazines of the 1950s that frequently used sexually suggestive headlines such as “Who Is Monty Kidding?” How well known was the truth about Clift’s sexuality during that era?
A: Clift worked in a period when fan magazines were challenged by scandal magazines, each promising “the truth” about stars’ private lives. Ironically, even the scandal rags did not want any “truth” firmly established because that would rob them of the chance to repeatedly tantalize readers with the next promised exposé. Biographical information suggests that people who worked with Clift always “knew” in exact proportion to what they wanted to know. Fans likewise. Everyone minimized the complexity of Clift’s emotional relationships — with men, older women, young women — in order to maintain the image of the actor that appealed to them most.

Q: A recent article in Newsweek suggests audiences can’t accept gay actors as romantic leading men when we know the truth about their real-life sexuality and uses Rock Hudson as an example. How do you think this applies to Clift, who had such intense chemistry on-screen with Elizabeth Taylor and other actresses?
A: When audiences think they know something about an actor’s personal sexuality it becomes available as a touchstone to spectators watching a performance but is never mandatory. People judging a performance often appreciate it most the more it varies from what we think we know about the performer — casting against type, nice people playing psychos, beautiful actresses playing ugly. If we think of Clift as an actor, then his persuasiveness as a romantic lead opposite Taylor, Olivia de Havilland, or Jennifer Jones increases our appreciation of his skill as he seems to become inseparable from the role.

Another issue is history itself. As new generations are introduced to Clift and Hudson, they often react to the performers without knowing any biographical information about them. They are also less invested in “the truth” than those who experienced a change in their perception through revelations and the exposure of secrets. The freer sexuality of Brando or Dean, for instance, has not come to dominate their images.

Q: How do you think Clift would have fared personally and professionally if he began his career today, with the intrusion of the Internet and paparazzi?
A: The intrusion of the media today is offset by the openness of some gay performers — though not romantic leading men just yet. As Tom Cruise’s career shows, it is possible to withstand rumors and media speculation if you have the power and the will to do so. Because Clift was never as closeted as Rock Hudson, I don’t believe he would fight terribly hard to maintain the illusion of offscreen heterosexuality. He might be more likely to take a Keanu Reeves approach, where the actor neither courts nor tries to dispel the fantasies of any fan. In several roles in the severely repressive 1950s he even courted audiences to read his characters — and maybe himself — as gay in the casually flirtatious scenes in Red River, the rejection of heterosexual relationships in I Confess, Suddenly, Last Summer, and Freud, the material on gay Army life that acts as a subtext throughout From Here to Eternity, and the relationship with Frank Sinatra’s character in the film.

Famous Hollywood celebrities have made some astonishing confessions at the New Yorker Festival over the weekend.

Sex and drugs were underlying themes at this festival.

According to the New York Post, speaking to a mostly female audience, Jake Gyllenhaal noted that he'd "masturbated four or five times in four or five different movies."

Dear Ted:
I was watching Justin Timberlake being interviewed on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and I have to say it was so boring! Whether it was his grandmother-like sweater, or his over-size glasses, he had no personality! Not interesting! Nothing! Is that what he's like in person? I can't believe that he's the most famous out of all the ex-band members!
–Doli

Dear Out-of-Sync:
We can totally believe it. He's the hottest out of them, duh. Still, J.T.'s nerdifying getup is so people start thinking of him as a serious actor, didn't you know? Sure, he did a pretty good job of playing the cocky douche in Social Network, but we miss Justin the singer. Timberlake isn't exactly as boring as you'd think in real life, though GF Jessica Biel certainly makes them give off a Gyllenspoon vibe 90 percent of the time. That said, Justy had better watch it. He's pushing the cocky-dork look way too much.

Dear Ted:
Love the Awful Truth Archive, thank you so much! Hope you can answer me these pretty simple questions: Does Nelly Fang have a beard (or a so-called girlfriend) now? If so, is she an actress or model?
—3 little pig

Dear Pig Wig or Beard?
Nelly doesn't have a beard. He certainly screws who he wants when he wants, male or female. And glad you're feelin' the archive!

Dear Ted:
How long have Judas Jack-Off and Dashed Dingle-Dream been an item? What is up with them lately?
—Jules

Dear Couple Curious:
Years. Same thing that happens to tons of long-time couples: boredom, fights and stupid conversations they regret afterwards.

Dear Ted:
Your comment on you being raised by a Republican mother in Texas, who valued her hair and church more than you was a moving insight in the whole A.T.-Ted phenomenon that is you. It was personal, precise and very touching. Now I feel like I understand how you are able to, very gracefully, see both sides in a story, the way you do (annoying as it is, sometimes). PS: You really, really picked up my nicely discussed dislike of Posh's looks, last time. You are funny and make me smile. Have a very nice day, babe!
—Sugarsnap

Dear Sweet Stuff:
Glad to hear my story made someone refocus their Awful glasses. I am all about sharing as long as everyone gets that I am actually caring. On a lighter note, literally, Posh needs a piece of pie to go with that cheater platter. Hasn't she heard carbs do the wounded heart good? Stay sweet and not too light, Sugarsnap.

Dear Ted:
Bravo Ted! Your Gay Suicide on the Rise message really touched me. You have always been an example of a gay human being following his path, living his life and making something positive out of it. But, Ted, come on, it doesn't matter how often stars come out, how much you promote tolerance and peace. As long as politicians vote for laws forbidding gay peers, i.e. fellow human beings, to have the right to marry, have children, show their love or whatever other notion heterosexuals freely choose in order to live their love lives, their actions will always promote hating.
—Rita

Dear Politically Correct:
If Washington won't do anything about this unacceptable epidemic, why can't Hollywood take a stab at it? These stars are role models, icons and, to some young souls out there, indirect friends. If they can voice their true colors, they are giving our voiceless youth courage to lead in a celeb-fashion...whether hetero or homosexual. And let's face it: Until H'wood makes being gay socially acceptable for good, we'll be on hold for a while.

The Poster for Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst’s New Movie

Starring Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, and Frank Langella — and hitting theaters on December 17 (and VOD on November 5) — Andrew Jarecki's All Good Things dramatizes one of New York City's most famous true-crime stories: that of real-estate heir Robert Durst, who, in 1982, was accused of (but never tried for) the murder of his disappeared wife. In the movie, Gosling and Dunst play characters based on Durst and his wife. But most important, they appear topless on the film's poster, which Vulture can exclusively show you today.

Anne Hathaway, 'Vampire Diaries' stars and others team up for new 'It Get's Better' PSA

Celebrities continue to rally around the "It Gets Better" campaign, a viral reassurance to gay and questioning youth dealing with bullying and depression. The latest, for confidential suicide hotline The Trevor Project, features no shortage of familiar faces.

Anne Hathaway, "Vampire Diaries" stars Candice Accola, Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham, "No Ordinary Family" stars Julie Benz and Michael Chiklis, Jenny McCarthy and others all join in the plea to end the epidemic of gay suicides.

Daniel Radcliffe has been a vocal supporter of The Trevor Project for quite some time, so it’s no surprise he’s speaking out about the epidemic of GLBT teen suicides from bullying. “Learning about the suicide deaths of Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh, Asher Walker, Billy Lucas and Justin Aaberg has been heartbreaking for me. These young people were bullied and tormented by people that should have been their friends. We have a responsibility to be better to each other, and accept each others' differences regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ability, or religion and stand up for someone when they're bullied."

Ted gave BBM a bad review. Not sure if I'm happy about the positive review for LAOD. I can't trust his judgement. LOL."

He's a self-hating homo AND an opportunist (and a liar). Look at how he disgustingly panders to that Twilight crowd (because they get a lot of hits). I refuse to believe a 50-year-old man has that much interest in that Twilight. And as for BBM, when Ted panned BBM nastily in its early days I don't think he foresaw that the film would become a groundbreaking classic and Heath's premature death. Just remember he sneered quite a lot at Jake's performance and he was CONSTANTLY talking about how he saw Heath walk into a bathroom with Tara what's her face to snort cocaine or whatever the hell they were doing--he said this even AFTER Heath died.

And to give you an idea of what a scum he is, days before the 2009 Oscars he starts reporting on how Heath's Best Supporting Oscar is not a sure thing based on what he's been hearing--and he was VERY happy to report an ugly remark or two he's heard. He's a pig and I really wish you guys would stop giving anything that asshole says credence.

I wish Jake well for his upcoming film but I will NEVER give a liar and opportunist like Ted any credence when it comes to his dubious and self-motivated opinions. Listen to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety critics and Peter Travers--people like that--even Roger Ebert (I know he campaigned for Crash--my only quibble about him--although he did like BBM a lot) when it comes to anything movie related--not Bruce Bibby (his real name).

I'm COMPLETELY convinced now that anything that asshole says about Jake when it comes to Toothy Tile the last few years is nothing but one friggin lie--hell Ian Halperin has been more creditable.

Anonymous said...

Also, one more thing: Did you see the headline Ted gave to his latest Toothy Tile fabrication: "Toothy Gets Fishy Again?" Do you all know that "fishy" is a gay misogynistic slur for women? It is. I've heard this said by gay men who hate women--the term fish.

He's garbage and I'm tired of reading that ANYTIME a man he has a boner for is involved with a woman than that woman is a beard. For the record, I do think Jake is bi and I don't think every single woman Jake has dated is nothing but a beard to further fuel Ted's fantasies and Toothy Tile fiction.

Anonymous said...

Jake bearded with Reese Witherspoon, we didn't need Ted to tell us that - it was obvious.

Anonymous said...

not Bruce Bibby (his real name).

LMAO. I didn't know that.

As for LAOD, I always take what Teddy boy says with a grain of salt. I'll wait for real critics to review the film. Of course I'm crossing my fingers for Jake & Anne. ;)

Anonymous said...

There are movies that premiered at the important festivals that are heavily promoted even now, even though they come out in December. Cover stories, etc.,etc.. Jake's movie that comes out in less than a month, OTOH, nada. That's not a good sign, right?

Bibby ain't a film critic and yes the term fishy is vile.

Sick of him pimping The Twilight shit for hits, he knows that relationship is fake and yet he goes on about bearding in HW, he's a fucking joke.

Anonymous said...

I think it's safe to say that we all HOPE that Ted was right regarding LAOD. LOL. ;)

Anonymous said...

I remember what Ted said about Heath right after he died, until he got lots of hate mail. I couldn't believe he could be so callous but then he never liked Heath, probably even hated him.

Anonymous said...

Ted C. is a very biased man. He'd never make a believable critic. When he hates an actor, he gives him a bad rev, when he loves an actor a good rev. He should stick with gossiping (he's not even very good at that). He seems hot/cold with Jake. He never seemed fond of Heath though.

Anonymous said...

12:58, I agree. He is a joke. Go and look up what he said about Heath's chances for winning a Best Supporting Oscar two days before the ceremony. He's an ugly, calloused man.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

idgi. why would anyone read crap that upsets them so much. Lots of people to read besides Ted C.

Anonymous said...

Go and look up what he said about Heath's chances for winning a Best Supporting Oscar two days before the ceremony.

That was bitchy, unnecessary and ridiculous because by then Heath had won every major award. Even for a HW ignoramus it was obvious RDJ had close to zero chance of winning. So much for Ted's insiders. LOL.

The fact that Ted is reporting on what the Twilighters do doesn't take away from the blind vices about them, anymore than Ted's reporting about how boring Reeke was means that he all of sudden was buying into them being real. Pattinson is supposedly bi, and it's entirely possible KStew is too.

Oh, that's right, only Jake can be bisexual and really dating his rumored beard Reese.

Destiny this is one comment I have to agree with you on. My partner who was a little older than me had the same take on BBM. I loved the movie so much I seen it a number of time. My then partner had a major issue with the gay person having to die at the end. "Always a sad ending for gay people" he said. Almost never a happy ending. He thought BBM was OK.
I never had thought about that. I agreed with him, but BBM is still one of my best movies EVER.

Oh, that's right, only Jake can be bisexual and really dating his rumored beard Reese.

Don't agree with you on this one. I have no problem with Jake being bi. Why is there NO possibility of Jake being bisexual? ALL POSSIBILITIES exist when it comes to someones sexuality we don't really know. I have no problem with him being gay, bi, or str8. No problem at all.

Anonymous said...

Why is there NO possibility of Jake being bisexual?

Because bisexual men can date women without the need to cheat on them with men.

My then partner had a major issue with the gay person having to die at the end. "Always a sad ending for gay people" he said.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I've known a couple of men in LA who have dated him (James Franco). He's quite the closet case, remarkably.

With all due respect to you, R8, and the magazine writer, no straight man loves to be immersed in "queer theory".

Anonymous said...

Because bisexual men can date women without the need to cheat on them with men.

No, that's called an in the closet bisexual man. The women don't know they are bi because they don't tell them. There are bisexual men who don't tell people that they like having sex with both women and men, thus they can be called in the closet bisexuals.
Do you actually think all or most bisexual men are openly talking about being bisexual?
Women do this also but most women are more open, about their sexuality to their partners. At least they seem to be from what I have heard and read.

Anonymous said...

No, that's called an in the closet bisexual man.

Wrong, that is called closeted gay man, look up what bisexuality means.

What? That was his view of BBM. It just was "OK" for him. I know of other gay people who think the movie was just uhhmm oK. I loved the movie, thus, that's one of the reasons I'm on this site. Follow what's happening with Jake etc. Other friends, could care less about Jake. lol

Anonymous said...

That's what I meant - how can a gay person watch BBMt and not be touched by it, see the beauty?

Anonymous said...

Wrong, that is called closeted gay man, look up what bisexuality means.

No it's NOT. I know what bisexuality means. And I do know that some bisexual mean are not publicly open about it.
YOU can call all men who have sex with both sexes gay if "YOU" want to, but I know better. And I don't have an agenda to promote gayness or anything. I'm just aware that men, who are a part of the human race are just as fluid in their sexuality as women. They just don't and won't talk about it. Open Gay men do, thus they are openly gay and proud. Yes I do know that there are gay men hiding and saying they are straight, but are in the closet.

Also, I let them conclude their own labels since I'm not in their head and factually know if they truely get turned on by both sexes. I can't make that conclusion. I have, but it don't make it true.

I'm not one who beleives every man that has sexual pleasures with
"both" sexes, women and men are all GAY. I just don't. Same goes for women also.

bisexuality means that you can have emotionaly and sexually satisfyingly relationships with both sexes.

Are you saying that men who do this are all openly telling others and identifying as bisexual?
If so, I say you are wrong.
Some will tell only a few people but will mostly deal with women in public. Noticed I've said MOST, not all.

As someone said above, most bisexual men will have sex with both men and women but be with the woman(mostly) in public. They also are not open about being bisexual. At least the male stars aren't. So go figure.
If you look at the open female bisexual who are HW stars, most who claim this orientation seem to date men mostly in the publics eye also.

IA. Also, according to Ted (the coke and the strip club BVs) the only females he's tried/did are hookers and strippers... if Jake's bisexual it sounds like he has bizarre tastes/fetish/whore/identity issues if hookers and strippers are the only ones he seeks. And if the coke and strip club BVs are representative of his intimate encounters with females, it's not sex attraction that's fueling it..it's something else darker and most likely mentally unhealthy, and I don't mean just bearding.

Holy mackerel!! Was the strip club in Cape Cod? Was Toothy's girlfin for the night a professional blowfish? Did he pay her tuna-quarter* to perch on her yellowtail? Did he made her snort killer amounts of coke off his trouser trout? Did he pack her like a sardine or did he go belly up because his hammerhead stayed shrimp-sized? Did he catch salmonella? Is Toothy being with a woman like a fish out of water? Are his pathetic sand dabs at a hetero image making his career jump the shark? Has the hook of Hollywood and the jaws of Toothy's PR finally caught, cleaned and fried him?

Jake Gyllenhaal Dreads Turning 30 – Sort Of

With only two months to go until he turns 30, Jake Gyllenhaal has mixed emotions about the milestone.

"Look guys, I'm not 30 yet!" Gyllenhaal cracked at Saturday's New Yorker Festival in Manhattan. "Can you cut it with the 30 comments?"

Deflecting – humorously – any questions about leaving his 20s behind, the Love and Other Drugs star may feel wistful, but he also says he is comfortable with the person he has become.

"I feel more like myself. I feel like now, it's just the beginning," he says. "I guess you get to a point at 30 or somewhere and you say, 'What I am, is what I am and that's what I'm going to be and that's all good. I don't need to be anything else.' And that's kind of how I feel."

One major influence is big sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, 32, who initially sparked Jake's love of acting. Growing up, the two did a lot of performing when their parents held dinner parties.

"Some of my earliest memories are of my sister coming back from doing a rehearsal for some musical during elementary school," he says. "I would watch her, and I realized that she got attention that way. I joined her and we would put on shows together and she would always boss me around."

Typically, Maggie would pull the big-sister card. Recalls Jake, "She would put on a stage performance of Cats, and I would be a lone, poor cat sitting in the corner while my sister performed. I never got to be the star. I did everything wrong according to her."

Now that both are Oscar-nominated headliners, what would it take for them team on the big screen again, as they did in 2001's Donnie Darko?

"I love her a lot," Jake tells PEOPLE, but "we don't go around looking for something to work on together. I would rather spend time with my niece, [Maggie's daughter Ramona, 4] and spend time as brother and sister."

Not that the door is completely closed. "It would take something that I love so much … that I would need her to be a part of, and vice versa," he says.

Bitch Back

Dear Ted:
How lovely of a person is Daniel Radcliffe for his support of the LGBT community at this very heartbreaking time? It gives hope that there still good role models out there who believe in fairness and equality, even if we're surrounded by the ignorant 50 Cent's of the world. If more people were open-minded and respectful, the world would be a much better place.
—DizzyDaisy

Dear Wizard Wonder:
What's especially amazing is that Dan has been a long-time supporter of the community and hasn't let that status waver despite people inevitably questioning his own sexuality (though the curiosity is moot at this point). See, you can be a gay-rights activist and confident with your sexuality at the same time. Crazy, huh?

Dear Ted:
Your words were very eloquent regarding the tragedies happening with gay teens. It's heartbreaking. It has me wondering what Butter Pussy has been up to. Still considering coming out of the closet? It seems like an appropriate time for a megacelebrity to make such an announcement.
—Lisa Marie

Dear Buttered Up:
Wish she would, but the courage B.P. had back in the day has wavered since then. Isn't that always the case? Huge shame.

Dear Ted:
In light of your latest chapter on Toothy, I think I am now almost as confused about what Toothy is up to as Toothy is of his own sexuality! If Tooth is choosing to secretly hook up with chicks away from prying eyes, I struggle to understand how this will bolster the faux public hetero image pushed by his handlers. What makes you so certain that this is "fake babe-nailing" and that T2 does not genuinely have the hots for both boys and girls à la Nevis Divine? And I guess your comment on Grey Goose being "over it" means that sadly, the love story between T.T. and G.G. is on the outs. So who gets Baby Tile?
—AS

Dear Tile-Phile:
Whew! So many queries, hon-pie. In order you mentioned: You are not alone. It won't. Because I know. Not yet. TBD.

Dear Ted:
Regarding your remark to Sophia Bush about getting naked for PETA. I hereby start an online petition to have you, Ted Casablanca, drop trou. It's for the animals.

Dear Petitioner:
Two things, sweetheart: First, thank you. Second, you'd better start this campaign before I stop smoking, 'cause, once I do, no Reese's Peanut Butter Cup will be safe.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Brother, 'Burning Dan,' Dies

Joseph Gordon-Levitt posted multiple announcements Tuesday evening indicating that his brother Dan has passed away.

The two brothers were partners in the multimedia website HitRECord.org, a community where artists and filmmakers to post their work and are connected with potential commercial productions.

The Gordon-Levitt brothers promoted the site at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Dan Gordon-Levitt, known as "Burning Dan" for his involvement in the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada, was an active photographer and fire dancer. He founded the Flow Temple, a school and performance group for Flow Arts that was based in Venice.

In his biography on the Flow Temple site, he described himself as "one of only 28 world-wide leaders of official Burning Man Fire Conclave troupes." And in a recent interview with PopEater, he called Flow Arts "a combination of performance art and dance and meditation and yoga and sort of self-transformation."

Born in 1974, he shared an uncanny resemblance to his more famous brother.

“It's wonderful to be mistaken for him," he once told PopEater. "He taught me to question the relationships other people have with their siblings because he would be my favorite person in the world even if I wasn't lucky enough to know him as my brother.”

Emily Blunt Joins Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Rian Johnson's 'Looper'
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who starred in the recent films "Inception" and "500 Days of Summer" announced the death of his brother on Twitter.

"My super hero brother @burningdan 1974-2010," he wrote.

He also posted an announcement about the death of his brother on the HitRECord website:

“BURNING dAN brightly embodied that bold beastly bliss sometimes referred to as "the creative spirit." He was my chief collaborator on the foundational incarnations of hitRECord.org over the years and continues to inspire us ever the more. He would absolutely positively insist that we not let this bad news deter us on our collective mission. That said, I might not feel up to it for a little while,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote on the HitRECord site.

No cause of death was given, and representatives for Gordon-Levitt did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s requests for comment.

A Shifting Oscar Race Heats Up

Now it begins.

“The Social Network,” the heavily promoted, critically acclaimed movie about the founding of Facebook, has been seen for weeks as the film to beat for best picture at the 2011 Academy Awards. But its less than spectacular box office performance in its opening weekend has shifted the playing field — upon which there may now be a brawl.

With the movie’s suddenly not looking quite as bulletproof as many thought it was, a range of other best picture possibilities — perhaps even the animated “Toy Story 3” — now have more room to maneuver.

Oscar handicappers at Web sites like TheWrap.com and Incontention.com have been pairing “The Social Network,” directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, as a front-runner with “The King’s Speech,” a classic British period drama that is directed by Tom Hooper, stars Colin Firth and will be released on Nov. 26 by the Weinstein Company.

But some unexpected players, lured by the relative ease of getting one of 10 best picture nominations in a field that was widened from 5 last year — as well as by the opportunity created when “The Social Network” failed to overwhelm at the box office — are getting ready to change the campaign dynamic.

Most surprisingly, perhaps, the Walt Disney Company has decided to take a deep breath and push Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” with all of its might. An animated film has never won the top prize — only two, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Up,” have ever been nominated — and Disney, in a decision that went all the way to Robert A. Iger, the media giant’s chief executive, has decided that “Toy Story 3” should finally be the one.

Aside from rapturous reviews and $1.1 billion in global ticket sales, “Toy Story 3” has the “it’s overdue” argument going for it. Pixar, which Disney bought in 2006, has delivered an unprecedented 11 commercial and critical hits in a row. The strategy has worked before. The best picture triumph in 2003 for “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” was seen as the Academy’s making up for overlooking the first two “Rings” installments.

Over all, Disney is readying one of the most ambitious — and expensive — Oscar onslaughts in its recent history, pushing “Alice in Wonderland”; the forthcoming “Tron: Legacy”; a new animated entry, “Tangled”; and “Secretariat,” which stars Diane Lane, in various categories.

Is Diane Lane this year’s Sandra Bullock?” Rich Ross, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, said in an interview last month about his broader operating plans. “I don’t know. She could be.”

"The Social Network" has a great box office for such uninteresting subject.

NY Times pt. 3 said...

In their place, a slightly younger group of directors — Darren Aronofsky with “Black Swan”; Joel and Ethan Coen with “True Grit”; David O. Russell with “The Fighter”; Ben Affleck with “The Town”; and, of course, Mr. Fincher — in coming weeks will be battling for the limelight.

None of them will fight harder than Mr. Fincher. Like Jason Reitman with “Up in the Air,” which hit the festival circuit in September of last year and was well received but ultimately won no Oscars, Mr. Fincher will be facing a test of endurance against films that will not be widely seen for many weeks, like “King’s Speech.”

“It’s burning fuel really fast,” Kristopher Tapley, the owner and editor of Incontention.com, said of “The Social Network.” Mr. Tapley noted that the film, which opened in nearly 3,000 theaters, was powered by the kind of media attention that is more often peppered across the long months of an awards campaign

“The reviews for ‘The Social Network’ were sensational, some of the best I’ve ever seen,” said David Gross, who operates the Web site Moviereviewintelligence.com. “But immediately I was struck by how the conversation turned to whether the box office was good enough,” he added of a debate that sounded among Oscar watchers this week. “The Social Network” was No. 1 but sold just $22.4 million in North America.

Still, attention to “The Social Network” is unlikely to flag, given the track record of its scrappy promotional team, which includes Terry Press, who ran campaigns for films like “Dreamgirls” for DreamWorks; Emily Bear, who previously worked at Miramax; and Cynthia Swartz, a Weinstein veteran who, as a partner at the publicity firm 42West, is orchestrating the “Social Network” awards push

And questions about the authenticity of the film’s portrayal of Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg, played in the movie by Jesse Eisenberg, can only help Mr. Fincher hold the stage.

This week, Stephen Ujlaki, the dean of the Loyola Marymount school of film and television, said he was laying plans for a seminar on truth in nonfiction film, built around “The Social Network,” with hoped-for participation by academy members like the screenwriter Nicholas Kazan.

“It’s supposedly about real people in real situations,” said Mr. Ujlaki, who is tantalized by negativity among some viewers. “My 18-year-old thought it was wildly inaccurate.”

For an Oscar contender, that kind of controversy could be a good thing.

No flaming, please! In the OMG report of Jake's chat with Denby it says Jake said he and Heath became friends BEFORE BBM. I thought the story was they became friends during the shoot? I didn't understand the attraction comment either, it would be nice to have the full quote.

Anonymous said...

I noticed that, and I thought it was great. He could have meant that Heath was the kind of guy who drew everyone to him, or he could have meant it that he felt an attraction himself to Heath. Who wouldn't? Now it makes even more sense about Jake's being little M's godfather. It's wonderful. :)

Heath himself said during BBM promo that "luckily" he and Jake have been friends for a while (before BBM), which, in his opinion, made the love scenes easier to do.

OMG - Jake's chat with David Denby at The New Yorker festival this past Saturday

OMG said...

Jake was there to talk about his past work as well as his upcoming movie LaOD, along with director Ed Zwick. As in such events, many of the questions from the interviewer were the similar ones we've all heard before, there were questions from the audience, and there a few new answers that came from evening. One thing many may not have known, and it was said during the evening, that friend Jason Schwartzman had been original cast as Donnie Darko.

Jake reflected on his career, his craft and the working with directors. He shared about his love of acting and spoke of how he is not done learning his craft and that he has to improve. And he spoke of wanting to make films that mean a lot to him as none of us know how long we will live.

He was asked if there are other things he wanted to do beside acting. And unlike in the past were he talked about cooking and other things he declined to say exactly what those thing are these days, but sounds like he does what to venture in other things besides acting.

He spoke of his family and Maggie and one thing he said is they are both so busy they rarely have seen each other's films and both have missed a few in each other's canon of films. He did say Maggie loved LaOD though.

And one thing that everyone had mention was Jake's reaction when they played the clip to BBM. How put his head down, closed his eyes, during the emotional good bye between Jack and Ennis.

Jake also spoke of his admiration for family friend the late Paul Newman "for creating an alternative to acting and said he too can make great salad dressing."

So here are the OMGer's talking about their evening together with Jake. I took all of their individual comments that they wanted shared with OMG and creating something that might sound like you are sitting listening to four friends reflecting over the evening around a table.

OMG said...

First off we got there right at 9:00 with the intent of having wine but when we found out they were allowing people to take seats, we said screw that and headed to the auditorium. We were literally 5 rows back and dead center to where Jake sat. Not long after, I turned around to see how large the crowd was (they dragged in slowly) only to see Naomi, a blond woman and a man I have seen her pictured with before walk in. She sat very close to us so we got a great look at her. Much more delicate looking in real life than she looks in pictures. She did not see me looking at her, but the man did, so I was reluctant to turn around to take another look as I did not want to gawk at her or make her uncomfortable

Jake came in a side door but his entrance was over shadowed by a video ad by Jason Schwartzman that started to run just as he entered.

The theatre was small, the atmosphere very intimate. I will take away with me a few revealing moments from Jake’s interview: evidence that Jake is indeed bothered by the idea of turning 30 and the reiteration that he does seem to be thinking of a career post-acting. His age came up maybe a couple of times and the second time it did, Jake collapsed back in his chair and groaned “Guys, I’m not 30 yet!!!!” So I could tell it is bothering him. I thought that was funny because it lends a human element I could identify with; that anyone can identify with. Nobody really likes their milestone birthdays after that 21st, do they? Jake is no different, lol.

OMG said...

Jake seemed fidgety, but then I think he often is in interviews. But unlike most of his interviews, he was kind of subdued. I think that in some of his more recent interviews for POP his merriment seemed kind of forced, so just as glad to not have that. I couldn't tell if it was Jake being more comfortable with himself, resigned to where his career is now, or not feeling good about where it is now.

We were lucky enough to see a couple clips from Jake's upcoming movie Love and Other Drugs. David Denby gave it rave reviews.

And what going going on in the poster for LaOD? Why did Jake have his hand over his mouth? Did Zwick offer to get naked, after they told him they were tired of taking their clothes off, to the shock and horror to Jake! He said that the reason Jake had his hand over his mouth was because Ed was in the room naked and he wasn't suppose to tell. And was Anne photoshopped ?

Yes, Jake or Ed ( I cant remember who) did make the comment about her head being pasted on. I remembered the statement clearly because of all the photoshop discussion when Special posted that photo of Jake by himself. But I could not tell if it was said as a joke or for real. Ed also said something like "they put her on Jake's arm", like she was added after, not while Jake was there, regardless. I do think the promo photos are probably done separately and photoshopped as a rule. Hollywood is all illusion and that way each star is lit to their best advantage. I also think they are pushing the sex and nakedness angle for this movie way too much. One of the clips had Jake and Anne kissing, and I am sorry, but Jake kissing a woman just does not work for me. When he kissed Heath in the tent, it looked like a real kiss. The kiss with Anne looked like a Hollywood kiss. Of course it is just a clip, but that was my reaction.

Regarding the poster, I do recall that was what was said about why the hand over the mouth, i.e., Zwick being in the room naked, and that Anne's head was photoshopped.

One huge thing I forgot was that they showed a clip from LOAD. Two actually. But one of the lines in the clip was "Just because you cant prove something, does not mean it is not true." Given all the you cant prove he's gay allegations that are flung by some commenters, that line blew me away.

I could sense how seriously Jake takes his craft. Jake talked about his childhood and competing and taking a back seat to Maggie. That competition sure seems to link to his ambitions. Jake sounded like he was at a point where he will just sees where things lead in his career but sounded like he was willing to move on to other venues if the time came. He did not share those backup ambitions with the audience.
He also kept talking about how much he'd learned, sounds like he had some regrets about the way he has worked with directors in the past, and some regrets about how he viewed the movie business and the work that I felt was a reference to POP.

As for new items of interest, he mentioned he regrets not finishing college. He wants to do a movie with Ryan Gosling (that drew a female scream from the audience) and he expects to do other things with his life besides acting. Oh, Denby mentioned that Naomi will be directing soon but did not say what.

OMG said...

I also loved that Jake said that his idol was Paul Newman. I believe Jake would love to have a career like Paul's. He also mentioned that he thought he could make an equally good if not better salad dressing which could give a clue of his back up plan for his career. I also like to believe he admired Paul's one mate for life relationship with Joanne Woodward.

Jake spoke of the importance and support of his family of course with Mom closely by.

After the event [Naomi] tried to get Jakes attention and was told by the blond that he was going to a NewYorker after party. I also heard the blond lady say that Chris was coming in later or the next day, I'm not sure as it was difficult to hear exactly.

I thought the crowd itself was subdued. No screaming women, except for the Gosling mention. The clapping after each clip was more polite than enthusiastic.

Jake's beard was long but trimmed shorter. To me he looked pensive, subdued, no big smiles like when he is with Austin. Not unhappy, but not the happy bubbling man that we once knew. He used to talk about his love of acting, but I think while he still likes it, there has been a change in how he views it and that other things have taken on new meaning in his life. He mentioned that we can not be sure how much time we have and need to make the best of it. A reference to Heath's death I am sure.

Its hard to remember all he said or my impressions it was so exciting just to be so close to him.

Jake was fairly open, engaging and interactive with the audience during the course of the interview, as well as while answering some of the open mike questions which happened at the end of the show.

The only time he really seemed animated was talking about Zwick and making LAOD. He really seemed to have enjoyed working with him.

It lasted longer than I ever thought it would – we received basically 1 ½ hrs and afterwards, Jake did shake a couple of hands from the fans and posed for a picture or two before being escorted out a side door.

He does not look 6’ tall and he has lost his PoP butt.

JGL quotes:

On paparazzi: Look, I've met some nice guys who take pictures like that. I don't want to demonize anybody. But I do think that this notion that certain people are in a higher class than other people is unhealthy. We would be healthier as a people if we quit paying attention to that kind of bullshit and paid more attention to more pertinent things and more beautiful things.

On drugs: I've had a select set of really beautiful, powerful, psychedelic experiences on certain drugs but I never got into just doing it at a party: 'Oh let's get f-ed up and drop acid'. That's so retarded and disrespectful to your body and the drug itself. Mushrooms, acid and ecstasy can offer you a new perspective. They can also offer you nothing.

On movies/movie business:

To be honest, I sort of feel like 'movie actor' isn't of this time. I love it. But it's a 20th-century art form.

Success is not important to me, nor are power or money. If the script feels good, then I'm in. It's that simple.

I don't blame the people for the fact that so many movies are bad. I think there's a corrupt, perverted, lazy and sloppy attitude that's pervasive in the movie business. The whole entertainment business is kind of crumbling around us.

^^He [JGL] is an absolute love and I adore him. I wish him nothing but the best in his career, and my heart goes out to him at this time. (((((JGL))))).

I read some IMDB quotes from the guys we often talk about on WFT 2. Like JGL, Franco, Gosling, Heath. Judging solely by the quotes, Heath comes off as most thoughtful and intelligent. Gosling seems very laid back, Jake comes off as laid back too, but also a bit preppy. JGL seems very thoughtful too. Franco seems very self-confident and snobbish.

That's what I did with my spare time. Reading quotes and interpreting them. I need a life. :D

P.S. Jake Gyllenhaal is obsessed with Ryan Gosling. Just saying. I would try to quote his answer from Saturday night when the audience question 'who would you like to work with?' popped up but it was so rambling and long and confusing that I can't. But let's just say it began with Ryan Gosling, was jilted by Ryan Gosling via text "I'm busy" and then ended again with a circular non sequitor shout of "Ryan Gosling!" Jake likey. Ryan Gosling is what you might call an actor's actor... since everyone seems to want to work with him.

Joseph Gordan Levitt was in GI Joe and he's signed for the sequel. These actors are all full of shit. They lie lie lie all the time.

Maybe it was some sort of contractual thing. I'm hoping he'll be in Batman 3, fingers crossed. I read where they had already cast the new actor for the Spiderman reboot, so my hopes for Batman aren't dashed yet! :)

What's the difference?

Did they all meet for drinks (Kool-aide) before or after the show?

Something tells me they were pouring drinks during the show.

Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal are back together onscreen for “Love and Other Drugs.” (They starred together in “Brokeback Mountain.”) I went to this movie with somewhat high expectations. Both Hathaway and Gyllenhaal are very talented actors, and director Edward Zwick has an impressive résumé. Unfortunately, the film did not meet my expectations.

Gyllenhaal plays Jamie Randall, a very charming newcomer to pharmaceutical sales. While trying to pitch his product to a doctor (Hank Azaria), he meets Maggie Murdow (Hathaway). We find out that Maggie has stage one Parkinson’s disease. This does not stop Jamie from pursuing Maggie. When their physical relationship turns emotional, both try to come to grips with reality and what inevitably may come.

Before the screening, Zwick told the audience that he wants to show people how the boost in pharmaceutical sales happened. He does show this in the movie, but it hardly captures your interest. I could not tell which one was the subplot: the pharmaceutical element or the love story?

The first half of the movie is uninteresting. With Jamie, we have another privileged, immature brat who decides to mess around with his life only because he does not want to please his father. How many times have seen this? And why do we need to keep seeing this type of character? Maggie’s character is more understandable. Because of her illness, she does not want to get to emotionally involved with people. Yes, we have also seen this kind of character, but at least it is not as irritating as Jamie. The only reason why this whole setup is considered unique is because of the pharmaceutical backdrop. Oh, and also because Gyllenhaal and Hathaway are naked for most of the first half of the film. The nudity was gratuitous; and gay or straight, you do get tired of looking at Hathaway’s boobs.

Ironically, the movie livens up when Viagra is introduced. This is when the pharmaceutical element became interesting. The high interest and demand for Viagra was outstanding. It is at this point in the film, where Jamie and Maggie’s relationship evolves. I started to like Jamie at this point; he was no longer immature or boring. Also, I found the scenes that deal with Maggie’s Parkinson’s some of the best in the film.

“Love and Other Drugs” is not a bad film. It is entertaining and funny. I only recommend seeing it if you are a BIG fan of Gyllenhaal or Hathaway. If not, you are better off waiting to rent it.

Looks like turning LAOD into a romcom was a big mistake.
