We had only another 10 minutes, and there were some things I needed to talk to him about. For starters, Jake has rarely talked publicly about Heath Ledger’s death. I wasn’t sure if I’d get anything out of him, but I had to ask.
“A year ago, Entertainment Weekly spoke to a lot of people for a piece about Heath Ledger. The screenwriter, producer and cinematographer of Brokeback Mountain all talked. You were conspicuously absent. Are you uncomfortable remembering him in public?”
“Yes,” he said, pausing. “Brokeback was painful. Any time you go into pain, I don’t think you necessarily want to go back. But the results of that film, and how the public responded to it so hugely, were worth it. Walking through any kind of pain is usually worth it. As close as we all became making that movie, for all those other people, it didn’t extend much farther than [the movie itself], so that experience of work could be easily talked about for publications. The experience Heath and I had was also shared publicly with all the press and publicity we did. But what we shared as friends, though I respect the interest that so many people have in the mourning and grieving process and how it feels to other people, I feel like — and I don’t mean this in an unkind way — but I don’t think it’s anybody’s business but his and mine. So in that sense, to really respect him — and also the way he felt about his life and his private life and what he cared about, because he was a deeply caring and loving human being — every time anybody asks me any question about him, it would be like he was sitting next to me, and I know he would roll his eyes, because that’s the way he was. It was between us.”
If we didn’t talk about anything else, I knew I had something of consequence. And I was confident that what Jake had just said was as far and as deep and as sincere as he could go with this — you could feel the anguish in his words. So I moved on.

Ultimately Warn concludes times have changed and that AfterEllen.com will change along with them. Going forward, that site will cover celebrities who apparently live as openly gay people. But as Warns also notes, this is murky territory. If the standard used to be that a celebrity actually had to use the words, to quote Ellen DeGeneres' famous Time magazine cover, "Yep, I'm Gay" to be considered out, then what is the standard now?
How many times does said celebrity have to bring the person they might be dating to a public event? Must they be photographed holding hands? What constitutes proof they are living together? Must friends and family be quoted discussing them as a couple such as Ugly Betty co-star Eric Mabius did recently when he referred to Ronson as Lohan's girlfriend?
If you don't trade in gossip, it's tricky. But this is also the way more and more gay celebrities are choosing to live. As AfterEllen.com is now doing for female celebrities, AfterElton.com is also considering doing in covering those male celebrities conducting themselves in this fashion. To not do so, the thinking goes, is to ignore the world changing the around us.
But let me be very clear: no matter what happens, AfterElton.com will never start outing people or trafficking in gossip. We would cover only those male celebrities who live their life in a way similar to Lohan. We would exercise great caution. We fully understand that coming out is a very personal issue and can have serious ramifications of all sorts, and a reluctant celebrity wrenched from the closet is not a particularly good role model anyway.

Q: Why do people keep insisting that Jake Gyllenhaal is gay? Is it because of Brokeback Mountain? Yes, I could reel off a half dozen names of men who everyone in Hollywood or New York "knows" are gay, but I can't think of any actor who has brought another man repeatedly to public events or has been seen holding hands together or lets friends and families discuss their relationship in public.
Some folks might wish to cite Lance Bass, T. R. Knight, Neil Patrick Harris and David Hyde Pierce as male versions of Lohan and Ronson. But using the standards I'm talking about here, none of those men would qualify.
Apparently Neil Patrick Harris and boyfriend David Burtka were seen together around New York attending plays, private parties or dining together before Harris came out, but that alone wouldn't be proof enough for us to discuss here. While Lance Bass vacationed with Reichen Lehmkuhl leading to photos of them together being published online, it was a relationship the singer still clearly intended to keep under wraps and we respected that until he came out to People Magazine; we would do the same thing now.
Before Brothers & Sisters' Luke MacFarlane came out earlier this year, some sites had posted photos of him spending time with T. R. Knight and cited it as proof they were a couple. But being friends with a T.R. does not make a celebrity gay. Or perhaps there is something we don't yet know about Katherine Heigl?
And, yes, there are certain celebrities rumored to be gay that we have mentioned in interviews or discussed in articles, namely Anderson Cooper. But we've done so only because the speculation that he's gay has been so widely reported elsewhere and is presumed as fact by so many. As I said, it's murky.
That just contradicts the other AE article about covering people just like they do straights. It's just not true that AE is going to do that.
Basically you're proving that there is something wrong with being gay by using it as a weapon.
AE doesn't point out that Cassie has it backwards. Saying someone is gay doesn't mean something is wrong with being gay and doesn't make it a weapon unless you think being gay is in fact a bad thing. If you think there is nothing wrong with being gay, you're not going to care.

Q: Oh wingéd primate, can you answer my query? I have often heard about celebrities that "everybody" knows are gay, but are not out to the public. Is "everybody" ever right, or is it all rumor? How does "everybody" even know? In respect to your policy, any example you give can be of celebrities who are now officially out. — Kaci, Kentucky
A: Is “everybody” right when they say someone is gay, or are they just repeating rumors? It kinda depends.
To be fair, there are plenty of closeted celebrities who are quite open in their private lives — on movie sets and at semi-private Hollywood parties. (Many of these celebrities used to be completely open even in Hollywood restaurants, West Hollywood streets, but that's changed in the era of Perez.)
It stands to reason that there are plenty people who have attended these events who could say, with some authority, "Oh, yeah, that person is totally gay."
Then there are, of course, the people that actually have sex with these celebrities — dates and hook-ups and the like. They're also in, um, a position to know the truth — as are any very close friends to whom they might kiss-and-tell.
These folks are the source of on set of "gay" rumors. But there's another set of rumors that is much more ambiguous: the person who sees a celebrity at a gay bar, who may be straight, but out with gay friends. Then there's the friend of a friend of a friend who knows someone who had sex with a particular actor — but this method of sharing information didn't work when we all played the whispering game in kindergarten, so what makes you think it works as an adult?
There are also people who flat-out lie, because someone "looks" gay, or because of wishful thinking.
The problem is, when it comes to "gay" rumors, you never which "everyone" is the authority.
Years ago, around 1990, I was part of an activist group that was told by a national group that we needed to pressure celebrities to come out. They sent us a list of “closeted” celebrities, and they assured us that they were "absolutely positively sure" that every single person on that list was gay.
I still have the letter, and reading the names now is kind of fascinating, because many of the celebrities have, in fact, since come out: David Geffen, Kelly McGillis, Greg Louganis, Linda Hunt, Stephen Sondheim, k.d. lang, Jodie Foster, Lily Tomlin, Jim J. Bullock, Melissa Etheridge, George Michael, and the Indigo Girls. (Incidentally, was there really a time when Jim J. Bullock, Melissa Etheridge, and the Indigo Girls weren't out?!?)
But there are other names on the list that I was assured were “absolutely, positively” gay — but who aren’t: Whitney Houston, Ron Reagan, Jr., Don Johnson, Rob Lowe, Burt Reynolds, Sylvester Stallone, Dolly Parton, Debbie Reynolds, Sharon Gless, Tom Selleck, Olivia Newton John, Julie Andrews, Robert Downey Jr., Richard Gere, and Diane Sawyer.
In other words, “everyone” had about a success rate of about 50%, which I think is about right.

Yes. Maybe Jake was in love with Heath, but his feelings weren't reciprocated. Maybe Jake and Heath had a fling. Maybe Jake was just enamored with Heath. A lot of possiblities and a lot of possible scenarios where Austin could have been the part of the picture.

Go to RMTEE and look at the archived interviews. He says repeatedly that people will call him gay no matter how often he says straight so he gave up answering for a while. I disagree. It's exactly the same. If the majority of people don't recognise Austin when he is with Sophia (and they are together on TV), then people don't recognise Austin when he is with Jake either. Perhaps even less, because not many people know they are friends and Jake being a bigger celebrity they just focus on him and they tend to ignore the person who is with him.
Also, we've had tons of sightings of Jake without pictures, so it's not true that people tend to take a pic of Jake.

I think Austin was at Bonaroo with Sophia. It only makes sense that he would be, they're trying to make everyone believe they're a couple, and they're obviously friends. From many accounts it seems Heath was a drug user (probably not a die hard addict like some want to believe). But that was not the reason he and Michelle broke it off. It was Heath who ended it (I 100% believe what Gilliam said). Michelle held the drug use against him to make it more difficult for him in the custody battle for Matilda (and because she was pissed he already moved on with Gemma Ward). The pill overdose was a stupid mistake, a reckless move. He striked me as a reckless man regarding many things he did.
