Nobody's Business But Ours

Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, so when you get some face time with him — it doesn’t matter who you are — you take it.

***

We had only another 10 minutes, and there were some things I needed to talk to him about. For starters, Jake has rarely talked publicly about Heath Ledger’s death. I wasn’t sure if I’d get anything out of him, but I had to ask.

“A year ago, Entertainment Weekly spoke to a lot of people for a piece about Heath Ledger. The screenwriter, producer and cinematographer of Brokeback Mountain all talked. You were conspicuously absent. Are you uncomfortable remembering him in public?”

“Yes,” he said, pausing. “Brokeback was painful. Any time you go into pain, I don’t think you necessarily want to go back. But the results of that film, and how the public responded to it so hugely, were worth it. Walking through any kind of pain is usually worth it. As close as we all became making that movie, for all those other people, it didn’t extend much farther than [the movie itself], so that experience of work could be easily talked about for publications. The experience Heath and I had was also shared publicly with all the press and publicity we did. But what we shared as friends, though I respect the interest that so many people have in the mourning and grieving process and how it feels to other people, I feel like — and I don’t mean this in an unkind way — but I don’t think it’s anybody’s business but his and mine. So in that sense, to really respect him — and also the way he felt about his life and his private life and what he cared about, because he was a deeply caring and loving human being — every time anybody asks me any question about him, it would be like he was sitting next to me, and I know he would roll his eyes, because that’s the way he was. It was between us.”

If we didn’t talk about anything else, I knew I had something of consequence. And I was confident that what Jake had just said was as far and as deep and as sincere as he could go with this — you could feel the anguish in his words. So I moved on.

PoP and Jake are in the fantasy category as opposed to action/adventure, which also fits, but is kind of ironic with all the talk comparing his role to Harrison Ford in Raiders, etc., and whether or not he would be a believable 'action' star. In any case, I have to believe Robert Pattinson and Twilight are the heavy favorites in that category.

Is This the End of a Hollywood Era?
CAA Negotiating $200M Investment From KKR: Partners Want To Cash

CAA is the Creative Arts Agency, a prominent entertainment and sports agency headquartered in Los Angeles. CAA represents A-list and emerging stars in movies, television, music, and sports. It is often cited as the leading talent agency, and its clients include Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, Oprah Winfrey, Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Will Ferrell, Will Smith and David Letterman.

BREAKING NEWS! My sources tell me that, after months and months of negotiations with potential financial partners pursued by CAA, the agency has focused on KKR -- Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co, the New York City-based private equity firm. The deal being bargained is for KKR to invest a whopping $200M in Hollywood's most powerful agency. CAAlogoThat's a huge cash infusion considering that CAA's revenues were around $300M in 2007 before the financial crisis struck. So why does CAA need so much money? This isn't just for CAA's sports business, despite the fact it's a notoriously expensive enterprise (because of the size of upfront investments in players that don't pay off for many years) and the powerhouse sports agents which the agency has assembled in recent years (who are already not-so-quietly complaining about their compensation packages). No, this is much more about CAA needing to raise additional cash as a liquidity event for its partners.

They say that CAA's 2nd generation of owners -- one-time Young Turks: Bryan Lourd, Kevin Huvane, Richard Lovett, Doc O'Connor -- are upfront about their desires to cash out of the agency business. Lourd has always said he wanted to move to NYC as soon as his daughter with Carrie Fisher turns 18, which she does this year, and to leave the agency biz for the corporate world. Huvane has always talked about wanting to put his own life before his clients' in the not-so-distant future, and the ever-partying agent thinks that time is near. O'Connor has been complaining about how tired he is of the agency business and its constant demands. Lovett, whom many have thought might be a lifer in the tenpercent biz, has pressing financial needs because of his still-not-final divorce and is blamed by his partners for over-spending and thus over-extending CAA's financial resources. (Expanding into the sports biz was his idea because he hero-worshipped IMG founder Mark McCormack.)

And there's always the next generation of younger agents coming up through the ranks who want more of a stake in the agency than the partners want to give them. The same thing happened in 1995 when CAA founding partners Mike Ovitz, Ron Meyer and Bill Haber turned over the agency to Lourd, Huvane, Lovett, and O'Connor who were threatening to leave. Now will be another end of a Hollywood era. But CAA has shown it can navigate the rough seas after principals exit.

Maybe not, but I think he just didn't use gray to answer the question because it doesn't add anything to his statement that its not black and white. People say it's not black and white, or it's a gray area, but not usually both.

Ted said 100 times that GG is TT's boyfriend so there is no need to just reference GG in the answer.

Taylor Lautner Talks Abs with GQ, is Hit on by Dude While Doing So said...

New Moon twink beefcake Taylor Lautner nabs the cover of GQ this month, and talks to them about how he takes preventive Advil to deal with screaming girls, as well as ingests bags of meat to keep his six-pack in shape:

Lautner admits to some dark, if brief, moments of self-doubt. He hired a personal trainer on his own dime and started practicing some Tony Robbins mind tricks. "I'm in the gym," Lautner says, "and I'm doing reps, and I'm reading the books, and I'm studying the character. I'm just saying to myself, 'I want this role. I love this role. I'm not gonna lose it. And I'm gonna know it better than anybody, and I'm gonna do that extra rep, because I'm gonna be Jacob Black.' " He ate every two hours, mostly meat his parents cooked and then packed in a cooler he kept in the car. Sitting in traffic, Lautner would eat cold ground chuck from plastic Baggies. He put on thirty pounds of muscle, consented to a screen test with Stewart (who lobbied on his behalf), and kept his job. He also solved the film's marketing issues when his abdominal muscles became New Moon's main talking point, not to mention his calling card. In one scene, Stewart crashes a motorcycle, and Lautner rushes to her aid. "It's just blood, Bella," he says. "No big deal." And then pauses to peel off his shirt.

As if on cue, a twentysomething man slides up to our table. "I'm sorry," he says, "can I take a photo? Uh, my niece is a big fan."

Photos by Mario Testino.

Shocker: Ricky Martin Is Actually Gay!

Outed by his own beautician... now that's a cool soap opera scenario!

It's become a bit of a tradition in Hollywood - actually, in the showbiz world in general - for people (that is, stars, 'cause that's what we're talking about here) with big gay secrets to be outed by close friends - or to be outed, period, but it's usually much more dramatic if the person spilling the beans is someone close to them. The "coming out of the closet" (either willingly or being dragged out) is even touching the fictional world of literature - as I'm sure you haven't forgotten that episode in which best selling author Joanne Rowling let the world know that one of the best-loved characters in the best selling Harry Potter series was very much gay.

It's basically the same in this case - well, minus the extreme surprise that comes with the news. But it was a shock nevertheless. So, world, Ricky Martin is GAY. I'm not entirely sure how many of you will go "yeah, been suspecting that for years" and how many of you will scream in horror, drop whatever you're holding and faint. I'm guessing it will be mostly disappointment on behalf of the female contingent (myself included) and not that much surprise - and that there will be a lot of guys out there very happy to know that now they have a shot at love with the hot piece that is Ricky.

In fact, Ricky was careful enough over the years and he never expressly confirmed or infirmed his sexual orientation. The fact that he was never publicly seen in the company of any potential girlfriend didn't help, either. But back to the whole "out of the closet" routine. Who did the outing? Well, if I tell you his name, I'm pretty sure it won't mean as much as if I tell you that "skin-care guru" Ole Henriksen, who counts Ricky as a client, was interviewed by a Swedish magazine and was asked at some point who would he choose to spend a romantic vacation other than his partner. "I'd go for Stig Tofting (former Danish soccer player) but since he's straight, I'd say my client Ricky Martin" came the reply. You do the maths.

The funny part is, I've been actually wondering just how silly it is to be outed by your own skin care beautician. It would all have been much more interesting if a friend, former lover, ex boyfriend of a current love (you get my point) would have done the outing. But it's quite interesting how things turned out to be. So, what do you think Ricky will do? Come out and confirm it? Sue Henriksen? Find a new beautician? It remains to be seen - and we will bring you all the news as soon as it's out.

I do lean towards thinking what Bomer is doing is a glass closet, albeit one made out of the thinnest of glass or full of holes.

However, I don't agree that you have to utter the magic words to be out. I think it depends upon the situation, e.g., do you need to say it because you've spent years saying or building the opposite image.

I could be wrong, but the last I heard Johnny Weir has never uttered the words "I'm gay", and I certainly wouldn't call him closeted. LOL, extreme example, I know.

You are right about Johnny Weir, he didn't talk about being gay. I disagree about the magic words. Jodie Foster mentioned her beautiful Cydney, but she isn't out.

Look interview (by Sally Morgan) 2000 "I guess these rumours were started by people who don't have a life, or perhaps it's because they want me to be like them and I'm not. I try not to pay attention to any of these allegations. I could have been married with kids for years or have 27 girlfriends, and if people still want to go around saying that I'm gay, they will."
He isn't gay, he just realized people will call him gay no matter what he says.

Comment #6 by: Mian on 27 Jun 2008, 07:26 GMT
Google "ricky martin is normal" (not that gay is abnormal) and you will see his many girlfriends including longtime girllfriend Rebeca de Alba
Go to RMTEE and look at the archived interviews. He says repeatedly that people will call him gay no matter how often he says straight so he gave up answering for a while. He started answering the question saying he was straight (Look up YouTube Ricky Martin Interviews- there are many where he says straight and talks of his girlfriend), and AGAIN the gay people started calling him a liar. No wonder it is no use him answering. I mean people don't look up the facts and just listen to a man who is trying to sell his skin care line by getting press.

Don't take my word for it - Ricky has been quoted repeatedly as saying he is straight!

Ask the Flying Monkey! What’s with all the Jake-Gyllenhaal-is-Gay Rumors? said...

Q: Why do people keep insisting that Jake Gyllenhaal is gay? Is it because of Brokeback Mountain? Certain blogs out there label actors as "gay" as if they were talking about their eye color, but isn't the goal to keep everyone out of everybody else's bedroom, actor or no actor? I never understood how people can't see that labeling someone as gay (who isn't) even if you’re gay yourself is homophobic and harmful. Basically you're proving that there is something wrong with being gay by using it as a weapon. – Cassie, Austin, TX

A: Fantasy wish-fulfillment aside, I’ve always thought it was lazy and simple-minded to label an actor “gay” just because he’s played a gay role. As I’ve said many times, if you want to know who’s gay and closeted in Hollywood, look to the actors who have never played a gay role.

When it comes to Jake Gyllenhaal, it’s particularly annoying because I honestly believe the guy deserves a lot of credit for taking that role in Brokeback Mountain, especially since it involved him being on the “receiving end” in the tent scene. In 2005 America, for an up-and-coming lead male actor, this was a pretty big deal (and I’m completely serious about this).

But yeah, all the gossiping and rumor-mongering about Jake just proves the most cynical people in Hollywood right: that American audiences are too stupid to separate an actor from the roles he plays. And from gay blogs, no less? Sheesh.

Still, I disagree with you a bit about the ultimate “goal” of the GLBT movement. Brokeback Mountain tent scene aside, being gay isn’t really about sex. There are two parts of being gay: the private part, which is what we do in our bedrooms (and kitchens and living rooms and hot tubs, if we’re lucky); and the public part, which is about relationships and rights. The only part that concerns heterosexuals is the second part.

In other words, the public part of being gay or straight isn’t yet the casual non-issue that is a person’s eye color – but I think it should be. And someday it will be.

Well, Sophia is a beauty, that's for sure. It's been mentioned that Austin lucked out with a pretty and sexy beard. And they do look like real pals, which is nice and makes it a lot more comfortable for all involved.

Yes, the 4:54 article. It's nice to know that some gay and straight views can be on the same page. Everyone who doesn't agree with you is not a troll. But who cares who calls anyone a troll anyway. Consider the source. It's a bit laughable.

Fantasy wish-fulfillment aside, I’ve always thought it was lazy and simple-minded to label an actor “gay” just because he’s played a gay role.

IDK - there's a good possibility he is gay, but I am not 100% positive as some of you. If I hadn't found Ted's rumors, I probably wouldn't spend much time on it.

There's all kinds of sage wisdom in that AfterElton Q&A column.

A couple of note from some other gossip:

Right now, coming out is pretty much a selfless act: something you do for your own sense of dignity and to help the general “cause” of GLBT rights. In almost every case, there’s at least some degree of risk involved.

He’s [Simon Woods] sometimes referred to as “bisexual” in the media, because he (reportedly) has a history of dating both men and women. But other outlets are stupidly simply assuming that he’s gay because he’s with a man now, and that all his heterosexual affairs were some kind of deception on his part.

But other outlets are stupidly simply assuming that he’s gay because he’s with a man now, and that all his heterosexual affairs were some kind of deception on his part.

A lot of closeted gay men use bisexuality to 'soften the blow'.

"In a 1976 Rolling Stone interview, Elton John talked about bisexuality, his belief that everyone is bisexual to a degree, and that his first sexual experience was with a woman, the secretary Linda Woodrow to whom he proposed, and who is mentioned in the song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight".[48][49] John married German recording engineer Renate Blauel on Valentine's Day, 1984, in Sydney, with some speculation that the marriage was a cover; when they divorced four years later John told Rolling Stone that he was "comfortable" being gay.[50]"

Anonymous said...

Yes, but you can't generally assume that. That's the problem I have with some of this gossip.

Anonymous said...

As I’ve said many times, if you want to know who’s gay and closeted in Hollywood, look to the actors who have never played a gay role.

Only British closeted gay actors are brave enough to play gay. Geez.

"Dirk Bogarde starred in the landmark 1961 film Victim, playing a prominent homosexual barrister in London who fights the blackmailers of a young man with whom he had an emotional relationship. The young man commits suicide after being arrested for embezzlement, rather than ruin the attorney's reputation. In the process of exposing the ring of extortionists, Bogarde's character puts at risk his successful legal career and marriage in order to see that justice is served. Victim was the first mainstream British film to treat the subject of homosexuality seriously and the film helped lead to a change in English law decriminalising homosexuality."

IA. At the time Jake did BBM, he was younger and more courageous and had a more idealistic view of the world. You could see it in him and hear it in his voice and in his words. I don't believe BBM was just another movie to him and I admire him for taking the role. But I believe that idealism came head-to-head with reality when he wanted to come out and was told in no uncertain terms that it would ruin his career. He was scared into playing straight. :(

Anonymous said...

It's called clammng shut when it's pointed out that the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes.

Anonymous said...

I resist making any assumptions about the motivations for Jake's career unless it becomes fact. He wants to be a successful working actor in HW, and it should make no difference whether he is gay or straight in the roles he chooses, which is probably true, he'll want to take varied roles and roles that are blockbusters and make money. I don't have a problem with it. People's enthusiasm for what they want to believe as Pop's failure is very sad indeed. He's not going to pick films according to what some want.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure you can figure it out.

I can try, but why should I do that when you can tell me and we can discuss specific people and specific assumptions.

Matt shared that the next season of White Collar will “[focus] on a lot of the things people responded to last season, mostly the relationships,” (via Seattle PI). “We expand on Neal’s relationship with Peter,” Matt added.

One more thing to throw into the ring mix. It didn't look like he had his ring on when he appeared at the Paley Center event in LA, but he definintely had it on at the Paley Center event in NY. That was clearly to promote the show, so maybe it's a finer line??

Of course not. I expected him to say something nice about Jake and his Brokeback Mountain role (he did), something general about Hollywood gay rumors and how After Elton tries to stay away from them.

I didn't expect to read the same "arguments" fangirls use to prove Jake's heterosexuality. I didn't expect to read about annoying gay rumors and silly gay blogs with people too stupid to separate an actor from the roles he plays.

Ditto. Plus the writer never takes on that fangirl attitude that saying someone is gay is homophobic behavior.

I've never been a fan of After Elton. They seem to be way behind the times in their attitudes.

Anonymous said...

Ha! Since today. There's no such thing as a fangirl attitude, except for the very young who are still learning about life. They'll have a lot of lessons to learn. .

Maybe there were rumors swirling before BBM, but you've got to admit they really took off with Ted and after.

Anonymous said...

you've got to admit they really took off with Ted

Agreed.

Anonymous said...

Exactly. And someone also didn't bother doing their homework to know that BBMt is not the reason Jake is believed to be gay. Sloppy writing.

There are some gay men out there that are really truly the epitome of brainless. They wish to appear to be 'fair' to moaning straight fangirls by siding with them that saying someone such as Jake is gay is 'fantasy' and 'wish fulfillment' (uh trust me luv, it doesn't fulfil MY personal wishes - I don't particularly have any where Jake is concerned - but it doesn't benefit me personally if he's gay) - I just happen to know the man is leading a double life.

But then appeasing and capitulating to straights is what some gay men do best, to appear less hysterical than their OTT gossipy gay blogging counterparts. The huge irony is, by appeasing straights and writing off certain peope as not worthy of note for posibly being gay, they are ignoring the tons of info out there that seem to often point to the very thing they are denying could be true.

Sloppy research is it. Jake is Gay never came from the pen of Ted C, it was around long before, just not as loudly because Jake was a nobody and it really didn't matter back then.

Anonymous said...

Sure. Your opinion. I don't know why you are so threatened. Being a member of the mainstream, I hadn't heard of any of the gay rumors until I kept finding Ted's Toothy Tile coming up on searches related to Jake and BBM. Never would have occurred to me that Jake was gay, simply because he played Jack. It may be true, but I'm not falling for it hook, line and sinker because I have a need to believe it.

Anonymous said...

you've got to admit they really took off with Ted

But Ted's Toothy saga isn't based on Jake being in BBM. The After Elton writer is mistaken to blame the gay 'rumors' on BBM. Writers need to do some homework and know what they're talking about before they write.

IMO they are too willing to accept the status quo and don't seem to want to rock the boat. For example, I can recall some articles or questions about HW and the closet, and the underlying attitude was "well, that's just the way it is, you can't change it and you shouldn't try."

I'll just add that AE is afilliated with Logo. Logo is part of Viacom, which is owned by Summer Redstone, who is considered to be one of studio heads who has the biggest problem with out actors. And this is a problem how?

First of all, as I said above, it is just my opinion about AE. It's just how I feel when I read some of the stories over there, and it is nothing overt. Someone else could see it differently.

But to answer the question, in addition to what I said about Redstone?

Because it means they're not going to do anything that would hurt the other companies, like calling out Viacom and other studios for not using openly gay actors in movies and television. Logo is a pretty mainstream station when you get down to it. It makes money for them but isn't going to get too gay or too radical.

It is just my distrust of big companies. I just think they all flcok to the middle and try not to do anything that would offend anyone.

A site like Popsugar or one of those other sites with a big corporate owner is just not going to do the same things a site like Dlisted is going to do.

why would we care?

Because I expect more out of a gay blog addressing gay issues than reliance on old stereotypes and fangirl logic.

If FM was going to raise the issue, then they should have dealt with the whole thing and acknowledged that is not the only reason for the rumors.

By the way, I'm sure all those openly gay actors playing gay parts are all going to be surprised they are now straight by virtue of their choice in roles.
