I watched Jimmy Kimmel last night and I kept thinking when Ashley Greene was on (I LOVED the bit about her being obsessed with her dog who was outfitted in a cheerleader outfit--and then there was pic of her dog wearing a birthday hat) if Jake was really straight, he should date someone like Ashley! LOL the Pittsburgh Steelers have a longstanding rivalry with guess who - the Dallas Cowboys. They've played each other in three Super Bowls, a record for the most times that two teams have met there. In fact the feelings against each other are so strong that the Pittsburgh/Dallas rivalry served as a backdrop to the 1977 film Black Sunday, parts of which were filmed during Super Bowl X.

I suggested that TABLOIDS used the opportunity and turned "Brothers Q&A at the Arclight" into a "press conference where Jake talked about his "girlfriend"".
Yeah right..tabloids changed the well-known historical Arclight in Hollywood to the Beverly Hills Hotel or some other hotel in Beverly Hills. And ONLY ONE promo event per day for the Brothers movie is allowed. Heaven forbid they have two different events at two different places, or if IHJ misidentified the pics. Horrors!

I've been reading your column for a couple of years now and I think I finally have all of the lingo down! Totally love you. Anyway, when reading about Toothy and all of the other beards out there in H'wood, there's something I just don't get. Are all the photos showing the "happy couple" together just staged photo ops? Do they actually live together but go do their "thing" with somebody else each night? Do they meet up once a week for a jog and/or requisite tall latte for a good paparazzi encounter so they can have photos posted of them with the opposite sex? And does the public/Industry really care if Toothy et al swing the other way? I care more that they live a lie in the public eye instead of just coming out with it—is that not the general consensus? Both NY Times and LA Times paned it. Major critics gave Brothers negative reviews.
Maguire, who soared as the clever crime-fighting Spider-Man, has a tough time moving from model soldier to major head case at the pace Sheridan has set. And the cloying menace that served him well in "The Good German" and might have helped fill in some of the missing emotional pieces in "Brothers" eludes him.
Softness comes naturally to Gyllenhaal -- particularly nice are Tommy's moments with the kids, whose sibling spats serve to remind him of his own -- but it's not a particularly good fit for Portman. She is somehow more believable the colder it gets, whether head sheared and battle ready in "V for Vendetta" or tightly corseted with claws out in "The Other Boleyn Girl."
In "Brothers," she seems more girlfriend than wife, more baby-sitter than mother, and the will-they-or-won't-they with Gyllenhaal is so without fire that any thoughts of bed are more likely to be about sleeping than sex.

I'm surprised by the NY Times. I don't remember if the same critic reviewed "Brokeback Mountain" (the review was the BIG reason why I ran to see BBM--it was rapturous--plus I did like Ang Lee).
As he showed with “In America,” Mr. Sheridan has an especially good touch with children, and the scenes with Ms. Geare and Ms. Madison — grieving, playing, fussing with each other — are the finest and truest in the movie. Mr. Gyllenhaal and Ms. Portman, whose role is frustratingly if unsurprisingly underwritten, draw nuances out of the charged air between them. But the characters in “Brothers” are more shadows and ideas than flesh and blood. They lack specific gravity, a sense of rootedness in family and social reality that would give ballast to the film’s intense emotions.
These explode into view once Sam comes home. It turns out that he was not killed at all — a somewhat improbable plot development — but rather held hostage and treated with unspeakable cruelty by his captors. Haunted by what he has seen and done, he walks through his house like a ghost and convinces himself that Tommy and Grace were sleeping together during his absence. Mr. Maguire’s performance is disciplined but also strained, as he tries to convey the anguish of a man whose personality has been thrown off balance by circumstances.

Hmmm. Remember Ted's digidance post the week of 10/15/07? Jake and Austin in NY, Jake was in NY doing promo for Rendition. Jake did the Letterman show among other shows that week. Ted claimed that someone followed Jake from the Ed Sullivan theater to whever and saw them. Well these pics of Austin dated 10/16/07 while going out to dinner with a cast member while filming Informers was posted o n spooky's LJ. Idon't know what dates the 15th or 16th was but if it was a Monday and a Tuesday, wehre was the informers being filmed then? I thought it was LA/Uruguay, not NY. Ted's post appeared at the end of that same week, the 17th? IHJ has Jake at the Sullivan theater on the 15th for taping, so one would assume that it was the same week. Why would Austin fly to NY while in the middle of shooting? Unless Jake was at the Sullivan theater another day and Austin had a break in filming but Ted posted that the same week a Friday, so he had to have the "tip" Wednesday the latest because I signed up to get Ted's column the night before, i got that on a Thursday.
Was Austin in NY one day and back on set the next? And his hair, that wasn't mentioned at all in the "tip".

Jake Gyllenhaal sure as hell lives to get the gossies in gonzo overdrive. Why, just this week, right after J.G. did Letterman, all shy 'n’ stuff, he pulls the same don’t-look-at me routine down in the Village—almost.
Desk Stealth just followed J.G. and his gorgeous amigo, a dead ringer for Austin Nichols (would just go ahead and say it was A.N. here, but, like, maybe Jakey’s pullin’ a Natalie Portman, choosing to hang with an Austin doppelgänger just to throw us snit-snoops off the mark?) for several blocks.

So it was a monday and the pics on Spooky's journal are dated 10/16 and they are from L.A.
So either Austin was in NY on Monday and flew back to L.A. the next day or the sighting was BS.
Obviusly Austin had his hair that way and yet that was not mentioned. If he was wearing a hat, that would be mentioned. They would have saud a deadringer except for the hair. He couls have been in NY for the weekend-Monday but the hair got me. He was in the middle of filming a movie.
I think someoen fowarded a BS sighting to Ted based on the lenght of his pants the day he was filming Letterman, period.
Ted didn't check because like other Jake and Austin sightings at the time : The trailer and Jar/TMZ and Jar/Defamer, were the sightings legit or did they know that Jake's handlers have a history of not resonding or complaining abiut stuff like that and that was more than ok with the E lawyers because they knew there would be silence on his end.

Also that "sighting" of Reese at a liquior store is most likely false but I do remember tweets of Reese in Venise solo a few weeks back and the nordic almost sounds like one of those big gusy Jake and Reese were seen with in Venice earlier in the year, the one with the wool hat and looked like John Lithgow.

Finally, later that week is when there was all that chatter from that JJ guy about a baby being born, and some people who believe in BT and thought the guy might be onto something speculated that Austin headed back to LA for that while Jake headed on to Rome.

The Four Seasons hotel is in BH. People magazine was qouting from Grazia, who only described it as a BH hotel suite. Grazia was one of the news agency that was there I assume.
Since we now know there was a pres conf. we should be getting a transcript. They said that he made the comments 10 minutes into the news conf.

Which brings us to Relativity/Lionsgate's newcomer Brothers and the many things going against it box office-wise like a grim storyline cursed by its Afghanistan/Iraq war connection. But that was supposed to be offset by the lure of the combined starpower of Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man), Natalie Portman (Star Wars prequels) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Day After Tomorrow), all directed by Jim Sheridan. The pic ended Friday with a gross just under $3.6 million from 2,088 plays. But the paltry per screen average of $1,700+ indicates little audience excitement for the Oscar-touted sparks among this quartet. Sad that, though the grosses took a huge spike around 6 PM PT indicating that the film's under age-25 core audience came out for the late shows. It's possible there'll be a Saturday bump. If so, then Brothers should end the weekend with $10+M. Let the debate start over how much better or worse this movie would have done had it starred an older generation of actors.
Mad-Dog Maguire
Tobey Maguire becomes a rage hound when he comes home from Afghanistan in Jim Sheridan's Brothers. Consumed with self-hate over having chosen to save his own life over a comrade's and convinced that his wife (Natalie Portman) has been doing his younger brother (Jake Gylllenhaal), he turns into something feral. His eyes go white and he uncorks it like Bruce Dern did in Coming Home, only more so.
It's thrilling and terrifying at the same time, like molten lava pouring out of a volcano and people running for dear life, but you can't turn away. By the end of the film Maguire's Spider-Man thing has just given up and scampered out the window. At the end you're thinking, "wow...didn't know Maguire had it in him." It's the best performance he's ever given.
Otherwise I had believability problems with two major story points in the film.
This remake of Susanne Bier's 2004 original is about a younger "bad" brother (Gyllenhaal) stepping into the familial shoes of his older "good" brother (Maguire) after the latter disappears during an enemy skirmish in Afghanistan. My first problem was with the military officially telling Portman that her husband is dead when in fact he's M.I.A. because -- hello? -- there's no proof of death. The military doesn't provide unsubstantiated information to families of servicemen, period, so this is bullshit.
All Sheridan and screenwriter David Benioff had to do was (a) have the military report him as M.I.A. and then (b) persuade us that Portman and Gyllenhaal believe that Maguire probably won't return due to his probably being dead. That's all it would have taken.
The second problem is that I don't believe Maguire's character could ever find peace with a deed we've seen him commit -- something he felt forced to do while a prisoner in Afghanistan in order to survive. Maguire's is one of those acts that require only one of two responses -- suicide or abandoning your family and country and going off to Asia to live like a Joseph Conrad character. At the end of Brothers Maguire confesses this act to his wife, but are we supposed to assume he'll never tell anyone else?
And why isn't there a military debriefing scene when he comes back from Afghanistan? He would be shown lying, of course -- denying, covering up -- but the scene should have been in there regardless.

Regarding the second question raised by Hwood Elsewhere, and assuming that the act is either a rape or a killing of a fellow American soldier, my guess is that Sheridan didn't want to insult the military by showing him lying/ covering up. He inserted some sugar (political correctness) into the script. Without it, it would have been an imprevisible (read: European) movie.

If Michelle is lucky and Blue Valentine and esp. Shutter Island are well received, either critically or commercially or both, she'll get a huge career boost. 2010 could be "her" year.

Reese is a cheap publicity whore, it wouldn't surprise me if she used People magazine to make the fauxmance look more like a "real relationship", to get publicity and tabloid interest - rags ignored Reeke for a long time.

Okay, guys!! I stopped at my local Hy Vee store this morning and had to peruse the ol' People magazine. Let me tell you right now.
If you're going to open and read that article, as someone has phrased it before: You better ask the store for a sick bucket while you stand there and read it because the huge, full page Reeke pic they have in there, the big ol' spread they have on what is known as REEKE is plastered alllllll over the inside of that thing.

What an odd coincidence that of all the press outfits who attended this conference, and wished to ask Jake about his bearding fiasco, it was some fourth rate gossip rag in Australia who managed to get the big quote. I guess that Jake has run out of American and British gossip rags to flim-flam over this mess, so he had to find some rag on the other side of the world.
And what an odd coincidence that the quote happens after two years of public silence from Jake, just as the entire charade is collapsing around his feet. Now if you believe that these two facts are just coincidences, then there's a bridge in NY I'll sell you for ten dollars.

Did you notice that Brothers made over 9 million as of Saturday night? It is making decent money per screen and is on top for all new movies. I'm not saying hit, but it is a decent start.

People makes it sound like around March because they say something like they were seen attending Coachella which was in April. 9 mil for the whole weekend is nothing + it did so against 2 films already out for weeks. You can make an excuse against Twilight given its teenager loyalty, but not against The Blind Side. The first week opening is generally the best a film will do, so its all down hill from here. As more time passes,more bad/mediocre reviews show up on RT.

"The blind side" is a biopic about a football player : a subject much much more mainstream and above all not as depressing as Brothers!
Among war movie or more serious movie like "precious" "the hurt locker" ... Brothers isn't so bad.
Brothers isn't so bad, but it looks like it's going to be a flop.
But Precious and The Hurt Locker got GREAT reviews, both over 90 on RT.
