Gay Cowboys

A 33-year-old rancher, Mr. Glover comes from a family that has worked the land around Lusk for generations. His father still runs 300 head of cattle.

Seated at a table in the smoky Outpost Cafe alongside Highway 85, Mr. Glover laid out the story of a typical ranch-country boyhood: herding, branding, culling and haying, horses hobbled on picket lines and calves pulled forcibly from their mother's bodies during spring calving. Every summer Mr. Glover sets out with his brother in a panel truck carrying their two quarter horses, to compete in calf and steer roping competitions. "I never had any intention of leaving the cowboy lifestyle," Mr. Glover said. "Ranching is who I am."

Yet next month Mr. Glover will quit Lusk and that part of himself in order to move to the bright lights of Lander, Wyo. (population 6,864). "I don't really want to do it," Mr. Glover said. Yet he has to, he explained, if he ever wants to live his life openly. Like Jack Twist, the rodeo-loving character portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal in "Brokeback Mountain", Derrick Glover is gay.

"They always define it as coming out of the closet, but I don't consider myself to be out of the closet," Mr. Glover explained. There is a reason for that, he said. "Where I live, you can't really go out and be yourself. You couldn't go out together, two guys, as a couple and ever be accepted. It wasn't accepted in the past, it's still not, and I don't think it ever will be." That he and some of the others interviewed for this article were willing to be named and photographed was not without social and even physical risk.
***

When Mr. Ledger's character defiantly asserts, "I ain't queer," following a drunken coupling with Mr. Gyllenhaal's character in their sheepherder's tent, it seems clear that as much as he fears the loss of his cowboy machismo, he is equally scared to relinquish his physical safety once the two come down from Brokeback Mountain.

"I grew up with that same kind of fear and conflict," Ben Clark, a fourth- generation rancher from Jackson said on Tuesday. "Growing up, I never even dreamed that a real cowboy would be gay," Mr. Clark added. It is a belief in which he is not alone.

"I awakened to my same-sex attraction when I was 12," said Mr. Clark, who is now 42. "But I had no idea what to do about it, ever. I was raised in a ranching, rodeo world - wrangling, packing horses, riding bucking stock, working in hunting camps - but always with the sense that I had to conceal who I was because cowboys could never be gay."

The experience was "extremely, extremely lonely," Mr. Clark said, leaving him feeling so isolated that he more than once contemplated suicide. "I could not accept being gay because of the stereotypes that were drilled into me," he explained. "Gay men are emotionally weak. They are not real men. They are like women."

Like Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in the film, Mr. Clark dated women for a time, bowing to the pressure to be "normal" although, unlike them, he never married and led a double life. There's a joke out here about how one goes about finding a gay man on the frontier. The punch line is deadpan: "Look for the wife and kids."

Fortunately, Mr. Clark said, "I never did get married, because I never wanted to hurt a woman like that."

"When I was in my 20's, I worked in a hunting camp for three years as a wrangler," Mr. Clark said. "I heard the jokes, but I kept my feelings inside. One of the hunters asked me, 'Have you been married before?' I told him no. And he gave me a look and said, 'Most of the guys who aren't married by now are getting involved with being hairdressers.'"
***

"I know there are a lot of gay guys in Cheyenne, and it's pretty much accepted, in a way," said Julie Tottingham, the manager of Corral West Ranchwear in Cheyenne, the city's largest purveyor of boot-cut Wranglers, ostrich-skin Tony Lamas and broad-brim buffalo-felt Stetsons. "But at the same time, a lot of our customers would be offended if a gay guy was in here shopping," Ms. Tottingham said. "They'd feel it's an insult to the cowboy way of life."

Among the locals who got an opportunity to see "Brokeback Mountain" at the screening in Jackson was Jade Beus, an openly gay former cowboy raised on a sheep ranch in Soda Springs, Idaho. "I had more or less that same experience," said Mr. Beus, referring to the characters' struggles. "Trying to find self-acceptance literally took me to a place where I thought I was such a bad person I once put a pistol to the roof of my mouth."

Mr. Beus, who now owns a heating and plumbing contracting company, is not certain what it was that prevented him from taking his own life. "But something clicked over," he said. "I believe greatly in a higher power and I realized He dealt me this particular hand," Mr. Beus said. "I'm a man's man. I'm not feminine at all. Other people might slander me for who I am, but I made a decision a long time ago that I'm not going through life hating myself because I love men."

Jake's Heath hard-on really bothers some of the Jaustin fans. So Jake was with Austin and lusted after Heath. Why is this a problem for some of you?

Could one of you explain how Heath's not posing with Jake means that Heath was trying to distance himself from his own movie?

There is a difference between lust and love. If there wasn't, all of us would be having extra-marital affairs. Jake lusted after Heath - who wouldn't- but that does not mean he loved him.

Agree 100% that Jake is fairly effeminite. In fact trying to look straight and hanging around Reese makes him look girlier. He fades in to the woodwork around her.

Anonymous said...

"Jake’s crush on Heath is not slash no matter how you spin it. You know it, stop playing stupid."

Jake's crush on Heath is your perception cause Jake look at him with adoration yeah!
But now he look at Austin with adoration right !
And if you look at all the pics of him with other people friends , actors , productors .... You will see it. At canne festival for Zodiac , him and Ruffalo was pretty cozy , At Oscar's evening he looked at Sean penn intesely and I even heard rumours about him and his brother in law cause Jarhead promotion which came after BBM promo and indeed in some pics the way they interact is pretty confusing!!!!!!

Am I believe Jake was madly in love with god Heath ?? NO .
But yeah I love slash.

I agree there's a difference between lust and love, but only Jake knows who he has loved. We can only speculate. But I put my vote in for his feelings for Heath being deeper than just a crush. And I think that possibility really screws with the Jake and Austin "true love" fantasy which is why some are so determined to discredit the idea.

Sometimes you meet someone. He seems to be everything you think you want. And then you meet the real deal. But you can't have him, so you settle for what you've got. It's just good enough. Happens all of the time.

I'll enter into this conversation. Jake has a high voice, and goes really girly when with Austin, which I find adorable. In BBMt when I first saw him I was shocked by his feminine aspect, the mascared eyes - and totally blown away by his seductive mannerisms -

his adrogynous aspect is VERY attractive to many people.

Ha! Jake can be fairly effeminite, but I never thought about it regarding his Jack.

I think Jake is effeminate and it's a very attractive feature in him. He shouldn't try to tone it down like he is doing now (worst PR advice ever). He should make the most of it because it is what makes him sexy.

I agree that when he is with the beard, he looks girlier and asexual. When he is around guys (particularly with Austin and Heath), he looks boyish-flirty-sexy. I love that in him.

John Krasinski: Away We Go!

Check out this first look of a heavily bearded John Krasinski in his new road-trip flick Away We Go, out June 5.

According to EW, the 29-year-old Office star plays an insurance salesman expecting his first child with his girlfriend (Maya Rudolph, inset). Here, the couple visits an old friend (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who has eccentric theories on child rearing.

“This is the calm before the storm,” says Krasinski. “We’re about to head to her house for dinner, which turns into an absolute disaster.”

Directing the film was Sam Mendes, who won an Academy Award for American Beauty.

I wonder if the literal beard (which he seems to have lost for the moment) wasn't also done to butch him up and make him looks less androgynous. He seems to have lost that beard at the same time they started letting him be seen with other people. Looks like another attempt to correct the damage they've done to Jake's image.

Why heathens think Heath was so important for jake , everybody know it wasn't the case.

Only Jake knows how important or not important H. was for him.

As for the Oscar Luncheon posing (allegedly H refused to pose with J). Either it was made up BS or Heath was being a bit moody again. That's how he was sometimes. Did you watch the DGA video? Instead of focusing on Ang after winning the DGA, the photographers shifted attention to J and H, Heath being annoyed because of it, shouted at the photographers that they should pay attention to Ang who actually won the award. Jake looked a bit uncomfortable during the whole scene.

I think Jake was used to Heath's moodyness and wasn't mad at him. After the Luncheon there was this Q & A session with H, J and Michelle. According to the audience J & H whispered back and forth and J couldn't take his eyes off of H.

Then they promoted BBM as two straight guys who just happen to fall in love because of their circumstances and loneliness. BBM was filmed before Casanova and Jarhead, but both of those movies were released before BBM. Most thought the reasson for it was to release a masculine movie of both Jake and Heath before BBM hit the screens.

Most thought the reasson for it was to release a masculine movie of both Jake and Heath before BBM hit the screens.

I don't believe this. During Casanova press conference Heath said he tried to persuade the director to portray Casanova as bisexual which he (Casanova) actually was.

I don't think Jake and Heath intended to prove their heterosexuality by playing roles in these movies. I think people were unfair to both Jake and Heath.

Is Ennis gay? said...

Then they promoted BBM as two straight guys who just happen to fall in love because of their circumstances and loneliness.

Q: Is Ennis gay? Or was he just able to connect with Jake Gyllenhaal's character more than with anyone else?
Heath: For me, this was the story of one person and his soul falling in love with another soul; and the soul comes in the form of another man. I don't want to say that it's not a gay story, because it is. There would be a lot of people who would be really upset if we took that away from the film. But it's bigger than that.

Q: How did you prepare for the love scenes?
Heath: Stretching ...

Q: Had you and Jake already bonded?
Heath: No. That's not really preparing for a love scene. When you get on a film and find out who you're working with, you don't get on the phone and go, "Hey, maybe we should bond! Let's go get some beers!" "Bonding" just happens when you're with each other for 12 weeks, all talking about the same thing.

Q: Then how did you two negotiate your sex scenes together?
Heath: They aren't love scenes for their own sake. There are stories to them. So my character's first encounter just said a lot about him. Ennis' only form of expression was through violence. That's why it was important that their first love scene would be a fight. Then when it calms down, I wanted this innate attraction to happen. It should be fiery [smacks hands together] -- then over. Unlike Ennis, I've investigated love, I'm in love with love, and I know how to feel heartache and pain from love and longing. It's the same thing with a love scene. I've engaged in similar kind of roughness! [Laughs]

With Rob, more recently Ted calls him Pattinson but even then when he mentions Ryan (Reynolds) there's no # before the name. Which leads me to believe the # is intentional. Maybe he added the # to Rob a few times so it doesn't look obvious or maybe there's a link (blind item?) between TT, Rob and Reese that we don't know about yet?

I don't know if he would or wouldn't have played Jack. Remember he played a gay cyclist as a teen! ;) I read Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry wanted Heath for Ennis after they saw Monster's Ball and they suggested it to Ang Lee who later casted him as in the role. I think they planned for him to be Ennis from the very start.
I think the role of Ennis suited Heath and the role of Jack suited Jake. I think they were cast perfectly.

It is interesting that one of the places Ted is following on Twitter is hashtags. And over there it explains what it means.

"Hashtags was designed to accommodate the real-time news community. We provide analytic reports and indexing features to allow users to track what's happening now.

Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets. They're like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag."

Field Study: Mantreal Tweets said...

Good morning. This is Joshua David Stein, Out magazine's editor-at-large. Today I'll be heading to the Canadian city of Montreal, which I call Mantreal (get it?), to attend the American Men's Studies Association 17th annual Conference on Men and Masculinities. The conference is a chance for leading masculinity scholars to present papers and fucking party so hard you'll be like "Woah!" and they'll be like, "Yeah, no big deal, we party hard."

I'll be Twittering the conference and my trip into the wilds of Quebecoise nightlife -- surely the first time an academic conference has been live Twittered. You can follow my exegesis via Out's Twitter but also via our blog. Check out the schedule here.

Here are a couple things I'm excited about:

> The Men in Popular Culture session featuring a talk on Representations of Masculinity in Disney Films (Aladdin! Sebastian! Shrek!) by Ryan Kelly and Greg Kerwin.

> Funny grad student fights!

> A talk by a guy called H. Alexander Welcome on "Richard Pryor's Nurturing Masculinity"

> The Men, Sports and Action panel including a talk on MMA, "Masculinity at Play" and the Homosocial Construction of Masculinity in the Military. HOTTT.

> "He sounds like a fag" Defining masculinity in queer linguistic research. Perhaps the answer to the gay lisp question!?!?

> There's a stall at the Marché Jean-Tallon with smoked pig cheeks. I'll try to smuggle some back.

If you have any requests or suggestions of how to pass my nights and days, leave a comment. Not a moment will go by where I am not somewhat compulsively liveblogging or tweeting.

^^ I think he will! Jake and Reese will probably be friends for a while. It may be more than than a best friend though. I think Jake and many HW men are bisexual. So to me this means he's not gonna admit to it as most bi and gay men won't, but I think he will admit to a love relationship with Reese. It's coming.

Eric McCormack on Will and Grace's Lasting Impact

Eric McCormack is back in primetime as a hard-driving workaholic ad man on TNT's Trust Me. You can also catch him on the big screen in one of the oddest roles of his career -- playing a possessed astronomer in Alien Trespass.

The actor also reveals why he thinks the hugely popular NBC sitcom Will and Grace will have a lasting effect on generations to come.
...

Q: But most people do know you from Will and Grace. Do you think the success of that show helped promote understanding of the gay community?

A: I don't think we saw the series as having that kind of social relevance at the time. We didn't even push the gay side of it that much in that first season thanks to some pressure from the network. I think the thing that people didn't see coming was the popularity it would have in syndication which means that 12-year-olds are watching it. That's the real effect that show is going to have. Kids are going to grow up watching a show where Jack and Will are just part of their daily lives.

Q: Were you surprised by the passage of the Proposition 8 in California, which eliminated same-sex couples' right to marry?

A: I think our kids will find the whole thing as strange and embarrassing as racism. But I think the prejudice is going away even though we're a country that twice elected somebody based on a very right wing ideal. Suddenly, we're lightening up. I think Prop 8 is the last gasp of a dying way of thinking. I do believe, without sounding too pompous, that Will and Grace is a part of changing it all.

But seriously, the town's full of pooftahs. Get friggin' used to it. Always has been that way—always will be. It's a community full of creative types, babe, that's just the way it goes!

Take Saucy Bossy, for ince. He's made a living by exuding the easy, cool side of powerful in his acting, his looks, his walk, all his endeavors. Ya know, he's just one of those handsome, effortless figures who command authority, with just a touch of kink on the side.

Well, doll-babes, I'm here to tell you...

It's a helluva lot more than just a damn "touch" for Saucy's libidinous bent! He sneaks dudes right and left into wherever he's hanging, whether it's his house in L.A. or whatever hotel room he happens to be partying in while on location.

Oh, and all those (female) big-butt babes Bossy's always feeling up in public, at events, in clubs, etc.? "It's all an act," said a member of S.B.'s management team, which is terrified somebody's gonna catch Saucy getting vroom service from the guys.

Jeez, I swear.

It's one thing for a single guy to live a lie like this. But should a dad being doing this? What a horrible message of deceit this sends to Bossy's kid! (I mean, it's only a matter of time before the kiddo discovers pops is a down-low kinda man).

And It Ain't: Colin Farrell, Kiefer Sutherland, Denzel Washington

Iowa Supreme Court Clears the Way for Gay Marriage

In a unanimous decision, the Iowa Supreme Court has ruled the state law which forbids gay marriage in Iowa is unconstitutional. Six gay couples filed a lawsuit in 2005, arguing a state law which banned same-sex marriage was discriminatory. This morning at 8:30, the court issued its ruling on the case, making Iowa the first state in the Midwest and the fourth nationwide to offer marriage equality for gays and lesbians.

The Decision

According to a summary briefing released by the Court communications officer:

"The decision strikes the language from Iowa Code section 595.2 limiting civil marriage to a man and a woman. It further directs that the remaining statutory language be interpreted and applied in a manner allowing gay and lesbian people full access to the institution of civil marriage."

Due to the many requests, Queerty is making available the full decision. You can download the PDF here.

The court made its ruling based on the equal protection clause of the state constitution and framed today's decision as part of Iowa's long history of ensuring equal rights, "striking blows to slavery and segregation, and recognizing women’s rights". The Court made the case that "strong and deep-seated traditional beliefs and popular opinion" were not enough a reason to deny gays and lesbians the right to marry.

Furthermore, the Court rejected the Polk County's attorney's argument that gays and lesbians didn't deserve equal protection because they were not "similarly situated"– that is, comparable to straight couples. In their decision, the Court wrote, “No two people or groups of people are the same in every way, and nearly every equal protection claim could be run aground [under] a threshold analysis” that requires the two groups “be a mirror image of one another.”

The court also rejected the idea that marriage must be preserved for tradition alone writing:

“When a certain tradition is used as both the governmental objective and the classification to further that objective, the equal protection analysis is transformed into the circular question of whether the classification accomplishes the governmental objective, which objective is to maintain the classification.”

To top it all off, the Court went out of its way to reject many of the arguments usually levied at gay marriage: That gay marriage harms children, that marriage is for procreation, that gay marriage somehow destabilized heterosexual marriage and that gay marriage infringes on religious freedom.

I mean she could have just asked them to remove it, not hire lawyers. I mean, overreaction much? As far as I know Heath never caused his fansites problems and Jake neither, it's just Jake's dad and Cantara who made some problems, although they should keep their mouths shut, they are JAKE's fansites not theirs. When you take a step back and look at the basic legal argument behind these cases, the correct answer is remarkably clear. So clear, in fact, that I'm quite certain that future generations of lawyers and law students will look at these cases and wonder why it took so long for the courts to reach such an obvious conclusion, particularly in light of the extensive (and directly analogous) case law dealing with miscegenation laws and segregation. Once you accept the premise that there is nothing wrong with being gay (a premise which, I think, the vast majority of people--especially educated people like judges--accept), it becomes nearly impossible to make a principled legal argument in defense of laws that prohibit gay people from being married. It's just such an obvious and straightforward violation of equal protection.

This Is What Mah Boo Will Wear To Our Wedding

The Iowa State Supreme Court ruled this morning that a ban on same-sex marriage is gross and struck that motherfucker down! That bitch got banished back to the dark ages. This will make Iowa the fourth state that allows gays and lesbians to attach a ball and chain to their ankles legally! Hoo-RAY!

The Associated Press summed up the Supreme Court's ruling: "The court reaffirmed that a statute inconsistent with the Iowa constitution must be declared void even though it may be supported by strong and deep-seated traditional beliefs and popular opinion."

The court's ruling will take around 21 days to be made final. The Polk County Attorney said they would not ask for a rehearing, so gays and lesbians could start getting married in just a few weeks!

You know, when I first saw Austin Scarlett's corn husk dress on Project Runway, I knew this would be the perfect ensemble for Mah Boo Anderson Cooper to wear to our wedding. It goes with the dazzling silver field on his head.

Now that Iowa is close to marrying the gays, Mah Boo in a wedding outfit made from corn is meant to be! Yeah, I know you're thinking I should wear that, but he has the legs for it. And don't worry! He's going to butch it up by pairing it with leggings and a blazer made out of corn kernels. I'll wear something made out of hay or oats. It'll be the perfect Iowa wedding!

Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to get him to lift that restraining order against me. He's always playing hard to get!

Afternoon Piss: End the Double-Talk, Mr. President

If friggin' Iowa (no offense, babes, but California 's got way more fruits and nuts) can become the third state to pass legalized gay marriage, I really do think it's time to take this to the presidential level. At least for a nice cheerleading encouragement to his statewide supporters.

For the record, President Obama has pretty much stated—like a good Hollywood exec—he wants it both ways regarding gay marriage: "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman," Obama recently told MTV. "I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that's not what America's about."

Translation: California's Mormon-fueled passage of Prop 8 ain't Barack's style; Iowa 's high-court ruling legalizing gay marriage is. So just come out and say it and officially support gay unions already, prez! Ellen and Portia and a whole lotta other folks who helped funnel you into office would appreciate it.
