Jake Gyllenhaal, coming off his acclaimed performance in Nightcrawler, is teaming up with The Equalizer director Antoine Fuqua for The Man Who Made It Snow, a 1980s crime movie that IM Global is launching at AFM.
Gyllenhaal will star as the man in the title, Max Mermelstein, purported to be the only American who was in the inner circle of the Colombian cartels in the go-go 1980s.
Snow is a biopic of the man and is based on his autobiography. Brett Tabor wrote the script.
Gyllenhaal will produce with Fuqua, Tabor and IM Global's Matt Jackson.
Mermelstein was the point man in America for the Medellin cartel, helping smuggle tons of cocaine in the 1980s. He was eventually arrested and became a key informant and witness for the U.S. government, and spent his last years living in the Witness Protection Program. He died in 2008 and his eulogy was given by Tabor, who became interested in the man as potential movie material and tracked the man down.

The Weinstein Company will co-finance and distribute domestically IM Global and Antoine Fuqua’s The Man Who Made It Snow starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Deadline first broke the news of the project in November.
Produced by Fuqua Films, IM Global, and Gyllenhaal, the picture is the first film from Fuqua Film’s overall relationship with the leading independent film and TV financing, sales and distribution studio, and will start lensing later this year.
Snow is a biopic of notorious 80’s cocaine smuggler Max Mermelstein, who at the time was the only American alive ever admitted to the inner circle of the Colombian cocaine cartel. The screenplay by Tabor and Michael Kingston is based on the now deceased Mermelstein’s best-selling autobiography of the same title.
The deal brings TWC back into business with Gyllenhaal and Fuqua following on from their current collaboration on boxing drama Southpaw, which stars Gyllenhaal as a boxer who fights his way to the top of his profession only to find his life falling apart around him. TWC is releasing the film domestically.
The deal between TWC and IM Global was negotiated David Glasser and Michal Steinberg for TWC and by IM Global CEO Ford and General Counsel Deborah Zipser on behalf of IM Global. CAA brokered the deal on behalf of Fuqua Films and IM Global.

Harvey Weinstein's outfit has prebought U.S. rights to Antoine Fuqua's upcoming Colombian crime biopic The Man Who Made It Snow, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
The co-financing deal, struck with Stuart Ford's IM Global, was announced at the Berlin Film Festival, where IM Global is handling the film internationally. Foreign buyers already investing in the biopic, set to start shooting later this year, are sure to be pleased that a domestic distributor is on board (IM Global first launched the project to international distributors in November at the American Film Market).
Man Who Made It Snow is the first title from Fuqua's overall deal with IM Global. Gyllenhaal is also a producer on the film, in which he'll star as the late Max Mermelstein, purported to be the only American who was in the inner circle of the Colombian cartels in the go-go 1980s. Brett Tabor and Michael Kingston's screenplay is based on Mermelstein's best-selling autobiography.
Fuqua and Gyllenhaal are no strangers to each other, and are currently in postproduction on boxing drama Southpaw. TWC likewise has U.S. rights to Southpaw, which opens in theaters July 31.
“I am thrilled to bring this compelling and true story to the screen with Jake, one of the most talented and transformative actors I have ever had the pleasure to work with," Fuqua said in a statement.
Added Weinstein, "It's also of course a thrill to be partnering yet again with the immensely talented Antoine and with Jake, an actor who time and time again wows us with his fearlessness.”

Q: As you mentioned, it’s a short play, and it’s very fast paced. I was really struck by how you both had to transition so quickly from scene to scene: one minute you’re meant to be piss drunk and then, in a split second, you have to be very serious. How do you prepare for something like that?

Ruth: Not really. But we sort of do everything together. We have a sort of ritual of “eat.” Have a nap, warm up, and go. Lots of napping and lots of eating. I try not to stick to a specific routine.
Q: Your most recent male co-stars have been Dominic West and Jake Gyllenhaal. Jake the American plays a Brit in Constellations, and Dominic the Brit plays an American in The Affair. Who’s got the better accent?
Ruth: Jake, definitely. It’s incredible. It’s really hard to be specific with accents. He’s got such a British-ness down. He’s completely nailed the manner and the sentiment and the wisdom and the patience of a Brit. He sounds like where I’m from. It’s not posh English, which is probably a lot harder to do. He completely nailed it. And to do it in a play where you haven’t got a voice coach—to do it continuously for 68 minutes and be flawless is pretty impressive.

An experience that continues. In late 2014, indie distributor Alchemy, formerly known as Millennium, acquired a version of the film for an undisclosed sum. Now retitled, it had been pieced together by producer Kia Jam, a former Capitol exec. “People are expecting to see a broken film, and it’s not,” says Jam, who relied on some digital magic to create the pivotal missing scene. “We tried very much to be respectful of the creative forces behind it.”
While Russell negotiated his name off the flick, the cast is stuck with their faces selling a rudderless seven-year-old project that skimped on postproduction. (EW has seen the film, and though it does have a beginning, middle, and end, it screens like an unfinished work—in both senses of the word.) “They signed up for a David O. Russell movie and a Kristin Gore script. I mean, you can’t be classier,” says a source who worked on the production. “They ended up in a David Bergstein movie, which, in a million years, they would’ve never said yes to.” In other words, they got nailed.

The first secret is that the boyfriend had actually stalked the actress and knew where she would be at certain places and times and managed to show up and the next thing you know after a few of these meetings they started dating. As they continued to date, she began to see the dark side of him. The same dark side that she should fear right now and that another A list mostly movie actor felt for some time. See, prior to stalking our actress, the boyfriend did the same thing with the same setup to the A lister. He would show up to the same exercise classes and bike rides and befriended the actor. It then turned into a Cable Guy situation and our actor had to break things off. He tried but the stalker kept showing up until finally the actor got the police involved. Our stalker is currently trying to win his girlfriend back by harassing her agent and management team and still showing up unannounced whenever he learns where she will be.

Jake Gyllenhaal is still in town filming An Enemy, and he spent last night as a VIP at Rufus Wainwright’s Luminato concert at David Pecaut Square. Gyllenhaal was spotted hanging out with two blonde women in the VIP tent, alongside Jorn Weisbrodt, K’naan and other guests. It’s not typical for power couple Weisbrodt and Wainwright to be under a tent with heartthrob Gyllenhaal in a public space in downtown Toronto, so we imagine there are many people this morning who wish they hadn’t gone to bed early last night. Gyllenhaal and K’naan enjoyed a dinner at Terroni before the show, but not until after they waited 15 minutes in line before getting a table.

Disappearing from Netflix at the end of this month, Zodiac is among the director’s (and the actor’s, for that matter) least talked about films. But unlike, say, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which is seen as the filmmaker’s Hollywood-appeasing flick, Zodiac is Fincher in the raw, which created the Jake Gyllenhaal we know now. Set in the early ’70s, the film chronicles the Zodiac killer, who terrorized the San Francisco Bay area for nearly a decade, claimed almost a dozen victims, and drove investigators and reporters to the brink of sanity by changing his patterns, leaving dead-end clues, and disappearing for years at a time. In the film, Gyllenhaal portrays Robert Graysmith, a cartoonist turned informal investigator for the San Francisco Chronicle, where he was first exposed to the Zodiac’s harrowing letters. A tale of obsession on all fronts, Zodiac grips you from the get-go, and by the time the credits roll you won’t believe three hours have passed.
The film, similar to the Zodiac himself, begs to be analyzed. It’s a master crime drama whose genius nuances are probably only talked to death in film classes and by obsessive Fincher fans, but they deserve to be dissected by any film lover. Zodiac would have been nothing more than a creepy biopic if it weren’t for Gyllenhaal, whose performance may have saved him from run-of-the-mill pretty boy roles and instead pushed him into the dramatic and action realms where he continues to stun — especially in Dan Gilroy’s recent Nightcrawler.

As written by Kristen Gore (Al’s daughter), Matthew Silverstein, Dave Jeser, and Greene (O. Russell), Accidental Love is at times wildly broad and at other times extremely pointed in its criticism of our government and the sins that spin its wheels. Sadly, as Alice takes on the government and begins to expertly “play the game,” the film gets bigger and loses its footing. This is never more clear than in the sloppy progression of the Birdwell character, who emerges as a brutally-on-the-nose representation of bi-partisan corruption who fuels a rushed-and-silly finale. Catherine Keener does solid work as the villainous House WHIP, along with a slew of other actors, including James Brolin, Kirstie Alley, Kurt Fuller and Paul Reubens. Moments of abrasive ADR (additional dialogue-recording) and spotty color correction reflect a scattered editorial process, though they do not sink the proceedings.
Biel is surprisingly good here, and it’s a shame. This is a film that will most likely be quickly forgotten, along with the best performance the actress has ever given. And though it’s refreshing (and a bit sad) to see Tracy Morgan riffing, he occupies a portion of the narrative that feels woefully misplaced and under-served.
A bit more focused and this could be a something worth saving. Instead, it’s a about as slipshod as its new title.
Accidental Love is now available on VOD and hits theaters on March 20th.

Marked by quick fades to black in scenes that seem unfinished, or at least had no transitional elements between them, “Accidental Love” is all over the map. But at the same time, it’s perhaps less unfinished than we’ve been lead to believe. Sure, it’s rushed, hurried, feels stitched together in many parts, and yes, the infamous “nailed” scene was never shot and has been recreated thanks to the use of cheap CGI. But the nuts and bolts of the picture are there, including a beginning, middle, and fully completed ending, a semi-coherent story, and a through line. That’s not to say “Accidental Love” isn’t a compromised effort, it is, but perhaps the biggest problem is its execution.
