Tom Hardy has dropped out of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros.’ all-star comic book movie being directed by David Ayer. Not losing a beat, the studio has made overtures to Jake Gyllenhaal, who has generated heat for his performance in Nightcrawer, to replace Hardy.
Based on DC Entertainment’s villains-forced-to-be-heroes characters, the cast boasts a nefarious lineup that includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, along with Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne.
Hardy was to have played Rick Flagg, the leader of the group that consists of Batman villains Deadshot (Smith), Joker (Leto) and Harley Quinn (Robbie), plus Boomerang (Courtney) and Enchantress (Delevingne).
Hardy’s exit is due to scheduling, according to sources. The actor is currently shooting The Revenant, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s frontier drama that also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, and that shoot is now looking to go longer than initially planned.

Meanwhile, Viola Davis is in negotiations to play Amanda Waller and Jesse Eisenberg is in talks to reprise his upcoming role as Lex Luthor.

When I read countless Tumblr posts on Nightcrawler, that means I've read spoilers. I've seen the mirror scene - it looked outrageous. It was also disturbing looking and I don't like stuff like that. I've read about what these kinds of paps do and I read what the Nightcrawler film guys did following that car accident which involved young girls - how they kept filming with total disregard for respect and dignity towards the girls and their families. Court documents obtained by The ENQUIRER revealed that “The Avengers” hunk was busted in 2000 for trespassing in a Beverly Hills park well known for homosexual hookups!
Despite his repeated denials, “gay rumors have dogged Jeremy for years,” a source close to the actor said.

I get that Nightcrawler might not be everyone's cup of tea, and that they might dislike Jake's behavior, how the movie was marketed, etc. There are things I don't see for the same reason.
However, personally I don't think the trailers or limited scenes out there can convey how good Jake is in this movie, and that NC shows how much Jake has grown as an actor and/or that he has a real talent for certain roles that he is has turned to playing at this stage in his career. I know plenty of people who thought he was amazing in it, people who have no stake in the game, so to speak, unlike me or anyone else who posts here. I've also seen my share of comments, articles, etc., praising his performance, and people who think he deserved an Oscar nomination.

On Tuesday, after they appeared in the positively reviewed “Constellations” together, the two went to the private after-party for cast and crew upstairs at the new Theater District hotspot.
Wilson looked gorgeous in a long black and white Stella McCartney dress and Gyllenhaal was clad in a dapper suit.

I wish I’d seen Sally Hawkins and Rafe Spall in the London debut, but the director Michael Longhurst has found very fine replacements in Gyllenhaal and Wilson. They have a lovely time playing with the script and with each other – Wilson with her pointy, pouty features and wonderfully manic energy, Gyllenhaal with his bushy beard and earthier charms. He relies perhaps a bit heavily on blokiness and she on intensity, but they ably vary the mood of each new scene. And though the play fixes on physics, rest assured the chemistry is ample.

It’s a short play – just over an hour – and those in the orchestra seats may feel a little cheated at having paid something like $2 a minute for the pleasure. Perhaps the scenes, taken individually, aren’t as verbally fizzy as they might be (the opening gambit about elbow-licking is silly, while some jokes about midget porn are juvenile), and the overall arc is fairly sappy. Still, that didn’t stop me from crying softly during the weepy penultimate scene and then a little harder during the cheerier final one. And I wasn’t alone in sniffling into my Playbill.

But if we’re really and truly trying to fill each category with the best and most deserving performances, Jake’s name has to be in there. For real.
Nightcrawler is what’s been described as a ‘neo-noir crime thriller’, which means the entire tone of the movie was kind of intense and murky from the beginning, if that makes any sense. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a man named Lou Bloom, a low-rent thief who finds his niche filming carnage after car accidents and violent crimes, and becomes obsessed with finding gorier and gorier scenes for his reel until it literally consumes him.
And guess what? As it turns out, a person being consumed by his passion is a pretty effing creepy thing to watch, and Jake pulled it off to a level I didn’t even realize he was capable of. He sunk himself so deeply into this role that it was uncomfortable even to look at him at times. A sociopath is a hard part to play, but Jake was so successful that I found myself actually pushing my body back in my seat, away from the screen. That’s how skeeved out I was by his demeanor.
He was completely unrecognizable in the role, and I’m not just talking about the weight he lost. It was something in the set of his jaw, the way his eyes betrayed his excitement or analysis as they moved over whatever he was looking at. He was able to portray cold, calculating ruthlessness, and he was so good at it that he all but haunts my nightmares. I’m like…worried about the guy. And this is coming from someone who spent her entire adolescence with a crush on him.
What I’m saying is he basically shed any semblance of himself like a skin, and allowed himself to be completely absorbed by this maniac, and anyone who can do that deserves to not only be nominated for an Oscar, but to win it.

News broke today that Tom Hardy was forced to drop out of the upcoming Suicide Squad film due to his other movie, The Revenant, running behind schedule.
It’s unfortunate because Hardy would’ve made an excellent Rick Flag.
There is a major silver lining in all of this. Reports indicate that Jake Gyllenhaal is being heavily considered as the replacement. Like Hardy, Gyllenhaal is one of the best actors working in the industry and both would definitely bring a lot to the character, Flag.
For those unfamiliar with the Suicide Squad protagonist, Rick Flag is a U.S. colonel. Possessed with an extreme sense of duty and patriotism, Flag holds the distinction of being the only squad member who wasn’t coerced or blackmailed but in fact volunteered for the assignments. Flag is an exemplary hand-to-hand combatant, a skilled tactician and can easily hold his own against meta human adversaries.
Gyllenhaal’s filmography showcases that not can he adapt to any virtually role but deliver a distinct and memorable performance each time. Donnie Darko, Jarhead, Brokeback Mountain, Zodiac, and Nightcrawler are testaments to this.
If his next film, Southpaw, is any indication, Gyllenhaal is more than qualified to handle the intense action scenes the DC film will no doubt provide. Another indication is the above photo which showcases Gyllenhaal's physique in preparing for the role.
The Gyllenhaal name has been linked to comic book films for over a decade. His sister Maggie starred as Rachel Dawes in 2008’s The Dark Knight. Jake was almost cast to replace an ailing Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in Spider-Man 2 but Maguire recovered in time to film the sequel. Jake was also nearly picked to star in Batman Begins but the role was ultimately given to Christian Bale.
Gyllenhaal is frequently the first selection of fans and critics alike when it comes to casting leads for prospective comic book adaptations. Being a talented actor is only one (albeit an important) part of the equation. The right project role is also key. Flag is definitely an ideal role for an actor like Gyllenhaal. Given that Suicide Squad is being established with an all-star cast of some of Hollywood’s most esteemed actors, Gyllenhaal would be in fine company.

Jake Gyllenhaal Passes on ‘Suicide Squad’
Warner Bros.’ “Suicide Squad” still looks to be one member short.
Following Tom Hardy’s departure from the role of Rick Flag, sources now tell Variety that Jake Gyllenhaal has passed on an offer to play the leader of the superhero team.
WB had no comment.
The film currently stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne, with David Ayer directing. The pic doesn’t go into production until April, so there is still plenty of time to find another person to fill the role.
The film is set to bow Aug. 5, 2016.
Gyllenhaal has a handful of films debuting in 2015, including “Southpaw,” “Everest” and “Demolition.”

When Warner Bros. announced David Ayer was going to direct Suicide Squad for the company's first non-Superman entry into their DC Comics Cinematic Universe, the studio knew it had to be competitive in an environment where big movie stars want in on the superhero game and cast the film accordingly.

Now, we've learned why Tom Hardy has dropped out of the project. According to sources, He simply didn't like the script he was finally given, he didn't like the drastic change to the character. Like we figured, the scheduling conflict is a cover story, so he left the project under amicable terms.
The rumor is the latest draft of Suicide Squad has upped the screen time of Deadshot and The Joker at the expense of the lesser-villains in the movie like Rick Flagg. This also may have contributed to Hardy's exit.

What's so remarkable about Payne's play and Longhurst's beautiful production is the awareness that all of this could easily have been dry and academic. Instead, it's exquisitely real, and despite the shared experience of Roland and Marianne being related in fragments that keep veering off on new tangents all the way through the final scenes, their love story is profoundly involving and also quite moving.
The range displayed by both actors is impressive indeed, and their chemistry unquestionable. Wilson's character is the classic socially awkward brainiac with a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease. She makes Marianne slyly funny but also prickly, defensive and volatile — sometimes guarded and nervous, other times brittle and angry. Her performance is a complex symphony of ever-changing movements.
Gyllenhaal made an admirable New York stage debut off-Broadway in 2012 in Payne's If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, a less striking study of the chaos and comfort of human relationships. But the actor's work here is in another league, swinging from open to standoffish, from vulnerable to cool, from sweet and shy to charming and self-assured. His ambling physicality in the role is expertly disciplined but appears entirely natural, while his English accent is flawless.
Constellations is the first Broadway opening of the year and it sets the bar high. Would that more plays were as compact and lively, as intellectually and emotionally stimulating as this one.
