Cross Creek and Walden Media are backing the $65 million Working Title feature for Universal, which Baltasar Kormakur is directing. Everest stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Scott Fischer, Josh Brolin as Beck Weathers, Jason Clarke as Rob Hall, and John Hawkes as Doug Hansen. Shooting starts January 13 in the Dolomites in Italy and will continue in Nepal and Iceland.
This is one of two studio-backed films titled Everest — the other being the Doug Liman-helmed pic for Sony. And on Monday, Fox landed a 10-part event series from Alcon Entertainment about a group of hikers trying to hike Mount Everest. Working Title’s feature, produced by the company’s partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, was weathering a storm just a few weeks ago, after Emmett/Furla Films had exited as co-financier and the producers were trying to secure new funding.
The pic is based on the disastrous 1996 attempt to scale the world’s tallest mountain. Three different expeditions were hit by a sudden blinding storm, resulting in the deaths of eight climbers. The film will be sourced from various books and interviews with survivors. Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson will join Bevan and Fellner as producers.
Now it’s a race to the top for the dueling Everest movies.

If you’ve been following the entertainment news lately, you may have overheard a little diddy about Jake Gyllenhaal punching a mirror. While filming Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, Gyllenhaal became so wound up in a scene that he punched a mirror hard enough to require an emergency hospital visit and a few stitches. When we caught up with the actor earlier today to talk about his heroically damaged performance as Detective Loki in Prisoners, we had to ask about the mirror and his hand, which is still bandaged up.
“We were working a scene and it was an intense scene, and I just went for it,” he told us. “It’s going to be in the movie, too, which is pretty awesome. The feeling that you left it all out on the field, ya know? That you even put a little of your own blood into a project.”
In the film Gyllenhaal plays a young man caught up in the seedy, underground world of freelance crime journalism, and while his mirror-punching exploits will indeed make it into the film, he added that you may not see his character punch the mirror in the shot, but you will see it shatter.
“It’s so hard to explain this character,” Gyllenhaal said. “He’s all over the map in this way that is so fun to play. We were experimenting a lot because it’s such a brilliant screenplay — probably one of the best I’ve ever read. Dan Gilroy wrote it, and [the character] is sort of a modern version of a real entrepreneur. This sort of personification of this idea that success is the ultimate goal regardless of anything. He’s charming, and at the same time calculating. Why he is all these things is definitely underneath that [mirror-punching] moment in a way, but he’s just so complex. It was real fun to play as an actor.”

That site is a party of one. It's been bought off. It was part of Jake's history that WME has wanted to erase from Jake's professional life since they took over and have been painstakingly redoing Jake's image. Particularly damaging is the name of the site itself which contains that word WME and Jake can't stand the most - 'Toothy'.

Jake & Melissa's Pre-'Prisoners' Collaboration
Jake Gyllenhaal and Melissa Leo will both have their names in countless Year-End Best Of conversations thanks to the pair of powerful performances they deliver in Prisoners -- but it turns out this isn't the first time the two have shared the screen.
During a Q&A for The Los Angeles Times' The Envelope Screening Series, in association with EPIX, Leo said, "You know where Jake really learned to be such a good detective? When he was 7 years old, he was on Homicide and I was playing the homicide detective!"
"I was watching her like a hawk," Gyllenhaal laughs. "And everything that Loki is is based on all the work I watched Melissa do in the three days I worked with her when I was 7 years old."
