How To Spot Publicity Whores?

Caught in the Act!

How Hollywood's bold-faced names secretly steer the celebrity news machine.

Excerpts from The Wall Street Journal article, March 4, 2006:

A delicate new game is under way between the stars and the vast gossip industry of TV shows, magazines and Web sites that feeds upon them.

It has always been a relationship built upon animosity and mutual need. But tensions have grown with the explosion of media running paparazzi photos of stars canoodling or emerging from coffee shops in frumpy track suits.

Now many stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Jessica Simpson are fighting back. They are hiring their own photographers to capture supposedly private rendezvous, tipping off reporters to their whereabouts and developing relationships of mutual back-scratching with magazine editors.

The result is the flowering of a genre: fake paparazzi journalism, or the staging of "unstaged" moments. It is an art form that benefits both stars and the press. Stars get to participate in the framing of their image and magazines appear to give readers a glimpse of the real celebrity untouched by public-relations varnish.

When Ms. Paltrow gave birth in 2004, she knew there would be a high bounty on the first photo of her newborn daughter. A staple of the celebrity press, the actress and her husband, Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay, decided to take matters into their own hands and tip off a photographer they knew, Steve Sands.

Mr. Sands took what appeared to be surprise shots of the two emerging from the hospital in London with the baby and sold them to People for $125,000, according to a person familiar with the arrangement. Larry Hackett, managing editor of People, says he knew that Mr. Sands had been tipped off by Ms. Paltrow. But he didn't see the need to inform readers about it. "I just don't know how illuminating it is," he says. Stephen Huvane, a publicist at public-relations firm PMK/HBH who handles Ms. Paltrow, confirms Mr. Sands's account. "You'll see a lot more of that happening," says Mr. Huvane.

The magazines are lucrative. US Weekly sells a million copies a week on the newsstand at $3.49 apiece. The magazine turns an operating profit of $50 million a year, says a person familiar with its accounts.

Network TV programs like Access Hollywood, cable channels like E! Entertainment Television Inc. and Web sites have added to the coverage. All these outlets compete for photos documenting the daily lives of a small cast of celebrities. These stars, in turn, seek to control their images without appearing to, because doing so would ruin their mystique.

"All those dirty little secrets in Hollywood include tipping paparazzi off and playing games with them," says New York-based public-relations professional Ken Sunshine, whose clients include corporations and stars such as Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio. He says people might find that "unethical" if they knew about it, "but unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of the business."

Magazines have generally played along. In 2003, Ms. Jolie tipped off US Weekly that she would appear in a park one afternoon with her adopted son, Maddox, according to two people familiar with the situation. The actress had recently divorced actor Billy Bob Thornton, a relationship which was portrayed as reckless and bizarre. These two people say US Weekly knew Ms. Jolie had green-lighted the photo, which softened her image by showing her maternal side.

The photographers' onslaught has put stars in a tough spot. If they ignore the magazines, they let such pictures define their public image. But sitting down for formulaic interviews and staged publicity shots won't necessarily satisfy the magazines' lust for juicy stories.

The answer is manipulation so subtle it's hard to say if there's any manipulation at all. In January, when rumors swirled in the press that Ms. Jolie might be pregnant with the child of actor Brad Pitt, Ms. Jolie arranged for an employee of the charity Yéle Haiti to take a picture of her with her growing belly.

Ms. Jolie then let Yéle Haiti sell the picture to People, according to Mr. Hackett, the magazine's managing editor, and a representative for Mr. Pitt. A person familiar with the situation says People paid $400,000 for the picture. It appeared on the cover of the magazine with the headline: "Angelina Reveals: 'Yes, I'm Pregnant.' "

By arranging the Haiti photo, Ms. Jolie reaped several benefits. She ensured the picture was flattering. In diverting the money to charity, she put a twist on a tactic used by celebrities in recent years in which they arrange to be paid for wedding or baby photos with the proceeds going to charity. And Ms. Jolie reminded fans of her devotion to humanitarian causes. She had taken a hit months earlier when she struck up a relationship with Mr. Pitt shortly after his marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston broke up.

In many cases, stars don't need to try that hard. When celebrities pick a location like the terrace at the Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills, they know they're liable to appear in the glossies the next week. A bank of photographers regularly sits on the other side of the street with long-range lenses. Actor Tom Cruise was thus captured on film last year when he roared up to the Ivy on his motorcycle accompanied by then-new girlfriend Katie Holmes.

"I would probably say at least 50% of what you see in terms of Hollywood coverage is something that was not necessarily born organically," says Janice Min, editor in chief of US Weekly. "This is a totally symbiotic relationship. This is how celebrities survive."

James Franco's 40 Minutes: An Exclusive Preview

James Franco in a gay art film? Most of you will likely stop reading right here, go straight to Google Images and type in "James Franco gay art film photos naked." As well you should. But before you do, take a deep breath and keep reading. Because this isn't just some fleeting Franco folly. The Tisch grad's collaboration with "mumbleporn" director Travis Mathews is actually more than just an excuse to see Franco cavorting with a leather-daddies, and a very well-done and thought-provoking exploration of gay underground culture and Franco's own interest in queer issues. For James Franco's 40 Minutes, the two imagined the deleted 40 minutes from William Friedkin's controversial 1980 film Cruising, which starred Al Pacino as a cop who went undercover in New York's gay leather bar scene to investigate a series of murders. The result, a documentary-esque making-of film -- which is streaming exclusively in the dressing rooms at CoSTUME NATIONAL's new 150 Greene St. flagship as part of their "NEW NO DARK WAVE" group show featuring James Franco, Aaron Young, Frédéric Beigbeder, Daniel Firman and Tobias Wong, which Natacha Polaert curated -- will be on view at the store until Oct. 15th. A longer, feature-length version will make the festival rounds later this year.

Franco told PAPERMAG, "We wanted to revisit [Cruising] for many reasons, one of which was to celebrate the unapologetic queerness of the material, the anti-normative stance that the men in the old leather bars embraced." We chatted further with filmmaker Mathews about teaming up with Franco, making a film within a film and the lost art of cruising. Above, find an exclusive teaser and, below, stills from the film. Oh, and spoiler alert: Franco doesn't get naked. Sorry.

Jake, any chance of hanging out with James?

Anonymous said...

I have a feeling James could teach Jake a thing or two :)

Anonymous said...

Q: So how did the project come to be in the first place? How did you and James team up and come up with this idea?

A: James was interested in doing an art film that would in some way reference Cruising. And he also wanted there to be gay sex. And I had just finished a pretty long film festival tour with my first feature film I Want Your Love. It has real sex in it that's woven into the narrative. So James' assistant contacted me and said, "Would you be interested in working with James on this project?" When we started talking it became a much more collaborative process. James basically asked me to take the weekend to see if there was anything having to do with Cruising that was exciting and inspiring for me. One thing I didn't realize was William Friedkin, the original director, had to go back and forth with the MPAA to get an R rating. And he had to cut 40 minutes out of the film.

Not true.

"Speaking of dark and disturbed, Jake Gyllenhaal had played just that as the title character in cult-hit Donnie Darko. He was looking for an upgrade when he tried for the prize part of Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s Batman reboot, Batman Begins. He was said to be writer David S. Goyer’s first choice before screen-testing.

Gyllenhaal was one of the final eight actors to audition for the part, the others being Canadian Joshua Jackson, fellow Americans Eion Bailey and Billy Crudup, along with European actors Cillian Murphy, Henry Cavill, Hugh Dancy and Christian Bale, who Nolan pushed for and got, despite the actor being a real-life stick figure after appearing in The Machinist."

What's to think about this? Daniel Radcliffe could never play Superman just because of his looks.

Anonymous said...

Yes is true

Batman movie historians will note that Jake Gyllenhaal was Batman Begins writer David Goyer's first choice to play Batman, but was obviously beat out by Christopher Nolan's pick of Christian Bale. Gyllenhaal was also up for the role of Harvey "Two Face" Dent in The Dark Knight as well.

That Jake was one of unknown number of actors considered for the role?

Anonymous said...

I think that when there is the talent and the foresight, things that to the middle public, seem unlikely, they become possible, and with a greater success perhaps of the "safe road." Who thought that TM would have been a superb Spiderman? Or who thought RDJ, become the most believable super action hero of our days? I think that it needs to dare and to trust the talent.

Anonymous said...

Yes is true

I don't change facts, try to read if it is not too work, one of the last interviews of Jake, on being been almost Batman, all know how the matter has gone, and all we know how much Jake has gone near to be Spiderman. Or do you want to keep on denying as you have done on the matter Jake executive producer of EOW?

Anonymous said...

12:16 PM - huh?!?

Tobey and RDJ fit cartoon characters, so you are agreeing with "for such roles you need certain kind of look".

Nev said...

Here's what I think of RDJ and TM..

I don't like Spiderman and haven't watched the films but I've seen enough to understand that Peter Parker is kind of a nerd or something? Correct me please if I'm wrong.. TM fits that perfectly. And as Spiderman himself he didn't need a certain look, we can't see his face.

RDJ is full of himself, just like Iron Man/Tony Stark. He' s bursting with confidence and cockyness so again, he fits perfectly.

Jake would be perfect as Bruce Wayne..but it ends there..and that's only because of the suits.. oh Jake in a suit...*swooon*...

Anonymous said...

I don't do anything of the kind, I think That TMe RDJ was risky choices, and not easy for that type of film but their talent together with that of whom has chosen them has been right on the sceptics. Or do you want to tell me that RDJ was to the top of his career and the easiest person with which to work, or that TM is exactly the prototype of the " super hero"? No but are they actors of talent chosen by people of as many talent chosen by people of as many talent, in the case of Sam Raimi, is even more visible, he has not chosen Spiderman with TM but Peter Parker and this for who has loved the comic as me make difference .

Anonymous said...

This Batman rumor is obvious fiction at this point in time.

Anonymous said...

I don't have words, as usual I surrender me and I leave you to your arrogance, what I have said it is everything true and easy to check, stop to call me r liar because it is not true and you knowi t, and as usual the facts will agree with me, remember Jake is not the executive producer of EOW, because I say in this way.

Anonymous said...

One more time: Tobey and RDJ fit cartoon characters, there is nothing strange about casting them in those roles.

I'm sure you know that Spiderman doesn't look like super hero without his suite - just like Tobey.

Cut to the opening scene of BATMAN BEGINS. Bruce has just fallen into a well, finding himself bruised and frightened. He hears a faint sound down the dark tunnel ahead. As he peers in for a closer look, bats suddenly swarm out, attacking him as he tries to fight them off. Before the scene can play out any longer, we cut to an older Bruce Wayne, mid-twenties, opening his eyes as if he’d just had a nightmare. The young man is bearded with long hair. The man is actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Wait, what?
OK, maybe that’s not how the scene played out. We all know that was Christian Bale not only in that scene but the rest of the film and its sequel, THE DARK KNIGHT, not Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal’s name is brought up though, because, for those who don’t know, he was the runner up for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. He was the 2nd choice if Christian Bale for some unimaginable reason couldn’t take the role. What would have happened if Gyllenhaal had been cast? Would BATMAN BEGINS been as successful? Would Heath Ledger have played the Joker? Would Jake’s sister, Maggie, played Rachel Dawes in THE DARK KNIGHT? (Probably not). It’s interesting to imagine would could have been for the Batman franchise and what a difference this would have made for the film world alike.

Going back to September of 2003, Christopher Nolan was holding a casting call for the lead role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in his forthcoming reboot of the Batman franchise. Though still without an official title, it was well known around Hollywood that this would be a darker, more serious version of the Caped Crusader, and not the silly camp that Joel Schumacher had exposed audiences to in the late 1990s. The actors who were said to be auditioning for the role -- besides the aforementioned Bale and Gyllenhaal -- were Joshua Jackson, Eion Bailey, Cillain Murphy (who ended up playing a great Scarecrow), Henry Cavill, and Hugh Dancy. After all the actors tested, both director Nolan and screenwriter David Goyer had their “choice,” just not the same guy. Nolan wanted Bale but Goyer wanted Gyllenhaal. Goyer even went on record stating his admiration at the time for Gyllenhaal. Ultimately though, due to Nolan’s liking for Bale and Warner Bros. awareness of his popularity as a fan favorite, he was cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman on September 11th 2003, not Jake Gyllenhaal. Yet, one can wonder if Goyer had somehow convinced Nolan and the WB to go with Jake, how the forthcoming BATMAN BEGINS would have been different

screenwriter David Goyer

I'm sure you all know that screenwriters don't do casting.
They get paid for the script and that is it.

Producers pay for the movie and make decisions, and sometimes, but not always, they listen to directors they hire.

Duncan Jones — Another new director who is among the best emerging talents in filmmaking, Jones has two films under his belt, both of them doozies. His first, Moon, is a brilliant sci-fi picture of the mind-bending variety, an instant classic that many critics compared to 2001: A Space Odyssey. He followed that up with the mainstream sci-fi action film Source Code, which by the way stars Jake Gyllenhaal, the actor who almost got the job playing Batman in Chris Nolan’s films. Having proven himself a top-notch director with great vision and the ability to direct solid action thrills, Duncan was another director offered the director’s chair for the Superman franchise. He turned the offer down, because he felt he wasn’t ready for a big blockbuster like that yet. In a few more years, though, he might feel differently if WB comes to him with the Batman franchise

Same is true for Joshua Jackson, Eion Bailey, Cillain Murphy, Henry Cavill and Hugh Dancy.

The decision was make by Nolan, not a producer but the director.
and I remember another discussion with you speaking of Source Code where you said that directors and actors don't decide anything.

No the choice was between Jake and Bale.

That is just your opinion - you have no idea how they really made final casting decision.

Anonymous said...

No the choice was between Jake and Bale

Stop lying about FACTS - they auditioned 5 more actors for the same role.

Anonymous said...

you said that directors and actors don't decide anything

Directors and actors are hired and paid by producers and movie studios. Decisions are always made by people who invest money. If producers trust director to choose the right actor than that is their decision to make, not director's.

Everything depends on the carat of the director, or of the actor, nobody can tell Nolan or Malik what you/they have to do with their art, and the value of their name and their talent is not worth less than the money of the producers, same thing can be said for some actors as Daniel D L. or Sean Penn or even Dicaprio

I can read and I try to use the brain, perhaps my poor English doesn't assist me but I understands well what you say, even if you change mind in pulsation of wings of butterfly:)

1: I don’t like the idea of Jake as Batman at this point in time. It’s not that I don’t think he’d be able to play the part and make it his own and believable but I worry people would now see him as “second choice” + the success of the Nolan/Bale trilogy means that any subsequent movies will be hugely scrutinized and easily criticized – and the lead actor (anyone who gets the role) will be first in line for critique. It just seems like a huge risk that I’m not sure Jake should be taking. That’s my current feeling but I guess it might be different 4 years from now. Anyhow, it’s just speculation atm and should it become reality then I’ll trust Jake’s decision-making abilities and support whatever (Usually he makes good choices IMO with a few exceptions).

2: I don’t understand the discussion regarding past castings. I thought it was well known that Jake was the runner up for Batman (after Bale) – it’s been written and talked about as being “common knowledge” for year on message boards/twitter/articles etc. just like it’s generally accepted that he was in serious negotiations to take over as Spiderman.

3: I remember the discussion on Jake being/not being Executive Producer on EOW. It’s always nice when some arguments can be settled/proven with time.

You are Jake fan so you ignore other actors who got the same chance.

What a bullshit, please, it is obvious that other actors they made the audition, but nobody went on almost to be select as Jake.

You are missing the point.

1:44 PM is using "remember EOW thing" to sell "that makes me right about this, too". Not even a nice try!

This sentence denotes all of your ignorance on the matter and doesn't even deserve an answered

How do you know that?
You talked to producers? You date Batman casting director?

You don't have an answer because you don't like the truth.
Tobey got the part.
Later, when he asked for more money studio auditioned other actors to put pressure on him. That's all.

I don't need these expedient, I am also right on this matter without using expedient of writing.
otherwise I could also use the matter, Laney BV, that was surely Jake and James Franco even if Laney said no, but I won't do it oops,;)

These circular, name-calling, she said/she said, arguments go nowhere. Isn't there anything else to talk about today?

Yes, I am a Jake fan - I assume most people are on this board! But No, I'm not ignoring that other actors also auditioned for the role, but it was still widely reported that Jake was Bale's closest competitor / the runner up.

Late actor HEATH LEDGER was film bosses' first choice to play SPIDER-MAN, according to the dead star's longtime agent.

In a U.S. magazine tribute to mark the first anniversary of Ledger's death (22Jan08), CAA agent Steve Alexander reveals Ledger was among those considered for the blockbuster role before Tobey Maguire stepped up to play the comic book web slinger.

Alexander tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "Sony asked me to come over and read the script for Spider-Man. It was going to be a really cool tentpole movie.

"But as soon as I said 'Spider-Man' Heath said, 'It's not for me. I would be taking someone else's dream away.'"

It's very nice, Jake and Heath, do the same for Mulen Rouge.

People who believe that Batman and Spiderman PR stories about Jake should try some common sense.

If movie industry really was so hot for Jake he would be in position to choose from important Hollywood projects by now.

No idea if anyone has quoted/linked to this already but I really liked this 'What if Jake Gyllenhaal had been cast as Batman?' scenario

#justsaying

Once BATMAN BEGINS would have filmed with Gyllenhaal as the lead, the anticipation would have built up until the release. While Christian Bale was a general unknown to the “average joe” before Batman, Gyllenhaal was considered a rising, young star even before he would have been cast as the Caped Crusader. With this, it’s argumentative that BATMAN BEGINS probably would have had an even bigger box office opening than had Bale starred.

Guy who wrote that article is clueless, Jake never opened a movie.

Jake Gyllenhaal would have been even further been recognized as a major movie star and cemented as probably the greatest Batman of all-time.

Yep, he's batshit crazy. Tobey had 3 fantastic box offices with Spiderman and no one gives a shit about him. Bale is great actor and had 3 fantastic box offices with Batman and he's not big movie star.

True. I don't know how much of what he says is true/realistic BUT I still like it. ;P

Isn't he saying that if Jake had done Batman Begins he wouldn't have done BBM? How would he have then be the 'rising star blabla'? Hmmmm..

Yes, well enjoy it whilst it lasts…. There’s a real tendency for people to quickly disappear in frustration!

People who believe that Batman and Spiderman PR stories about Jake should try some common sense.

Wait! So now anyone who believes Jake was actually considered for the roles of Batman and/or Spiderman – as was widely reported – are being senseless and fooled by PR!

Whatever; as usual, it’ll be impossible to reach any kind of agreement. Naïve as I am, I shall keep believing he was a serious contender for Batman. I’m done for the night ☺

5:35 PM - why do you insist on insulting everyone's intelligence (again)?

Why don't you READ both sentences before commenting? How hard can that be?

posting said...

@ 5.39. I did read the second sentence but it didn’t make any real sense to me. I didn’t see how if was relevant to the discussion as we were talking about parts he missed out on years ago not whether he’s currently in a position to “choose important Hollywood projects”. Maybe we’re discussing different things by now, I’ve kind of lost track.

If movie industry really was so hot for Jake he would be in position to choose from important Hollywood projects by now.

It means that at time Jake was just one of young Hollywood actors with potential.
Not someone producers can't wait to cast in big, spectacular movies.

End Of Watch – Will and I saw this last weekend and I still keep thinking about it five days later. I seriously got sad and weepy the other day just thinking about it. (I know, I’m a little weird). You know a movie is good when it sticks with you long after you’ve left the movie theater, and that’s exactly what this one does. I laughed a lot, definitely cried a lot, and I can honestly say it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Oh, and Jake Gyllenhaal with a shaved head in a cop uniform? Sign me up!
