End of Toothy Tile Saga?
July 5, 2012
Ted Casablanca
The images are countless, breathtaking: Four editors-in-chief, 16 years online, piles of exclusives, plenty of gossip, invented languages, maddeningly fascinating celebrities (dead and alive) and most importantly — you. The reader.
We did this for two decades, folks! When The Awful Truth, which I founded at Premiere magazine 20 years ago, ends this week, it's not the deliciously decadent Blind Vices I will miss the most...
It's you barking types who always made me feel gloriously alive, with all you had to say and scream and be so real about.
That community is my life's (professional) work up until now. It has meant more to me than each of you will ever know.
But it really is time to move on.
If you don't agree, just keep in mind that when I first took this job at E!—in 1996, when the network founded E! Online—I was working at the established and respected Premiere magazine. Scores of people told me, "Online just isn't the place to go."
Everybody told me to pass on the job, and so I did. Then I called back the next day and an amazing man named Lew Harris said, yes, of course, I could change my mind. And I did.
So that's what I'd like my last words to be: Always do what you're not supposed to do.
And see you on Twitter @Ted_Casablanca.

K-Run DMC @korearian
@StayPressed Bitter I'm not in that show. So bitter. But Jake is so good.
Just Call Me O! @StayPressed
@korearian I know he started smoking again, did he look kinda ... like chunky?
K-Run DMC @korearian
@StayPressed I was distracted by his pants falling down a lot. He looked decently built to me.

It's actually BFI?
I think so. Bad Kate, she should pay more attention to details, but I guess she was too excited with with possibility of stalking Jake ;)

Trolly, are you proud of Austin Father Of The Decade Nichols? LOL
Jake discussing the play..again..

For a blog that thinks Austin has nothing to do with Jake...
OMGer, what is the point of your stupid and obvious lie?
For a blog that thinks Austin has nothing to do with Jake, you sure do hang on Austin's evry word and action.
Playing stupid as usual.
Unlike Special K, PG and the rest of OMG, some people DO care about facts and reality when it comes to Jake and Austin and "their kids".
Jake discussing the play..again..
DN: Jake, you’re an uncle to your sister Maggie’s two young kids. Has that informed your work here?
Gyllenhaal: Of course. I think real life is bound to affect any sort of artistic process. I have two beautiful nieces and they’re both an inspiration to me. One of the things that I love about this play is that it’s about a relationship that I understand.

This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
OMG trolls can't stand simple facts like Austin spending his free time with family in Austin, TX.
Silly OMGer,
OMGers like you post bullshit here because they care and because the truth pisses you off :)
9:00 AM - Hi PG!
PG,
why do you care about number of comments here? How can that matter?
Sorry, 1.000 comments per day wouldn't turn OMG lies and crazy shit into something respectful or reasonable.
Can't be helped, OMG trolls are stupid and crazy :)
1.000 comments per day wouldn't turn OMG lies and crazy shit into something respectful or reasonable.
Just like zero or 1.000.000 comments can't change anything about facts like Austin not being in New York with Jake.
PG, why aren't you retweeting my tweets??? *sniff*
In regards to why people post Austin's tweets... Someone on here wrote once that we discuss everything and everyone related or linked to Jake..so there you go...(also the reason why I'm currently wading through months and awful months of Reeke :s)
Ay, now I feel sorry for you! lol :)
Me too :P Have only hit December 2008 ><
very educational though...
In regards to why people post Austin's tweets...
I thought that's painfully obvious, but maybe I was wrong.
Sane adults base their opinions about other people and events on all sorts of things, including simple, plain facts.
Sane adults do not ignore facts, logic and common sense while forming their opinion.
We are discussing the possiblity of Jake and Austin being a couple and having kids together, and the only reasonable way to do that is to check all possible info about them and conclude something based on facts, photos, gossip, rumors and the rest - that includes photos, videos and things Austin Nichols tweets.
I thought OMG posters are capable of understanding something so simple, but now I'm not sure - are they mean-spirited idiots? Delusional? Crazy J&A fangirls?
very educational though
I agree.
Good - learned a lot about show business and how publicity works.
Bad - list of celebrities I respect is very, very, very short.
11:32 AM - Based on this, I would say mean-spirited idiots.
Certain of them are very mean-spirited, for some reason.

Got questions for Jake Gyllenhaal ?
Here is your chance to ask Jake about husband and kids!
Based on the New York Times best-selling book by former Secert Service agent Gerald Blaine and award-winning journalist Lisa McCubbin, the film will present events before, during and after the slaying in Dallas through the eyes of the men tasked with protecting the President. It will show a President who enjoyed interacting with audiences, and didn't like to be too closely guarded, often jumping to crowds with little notice to his agents. It will also explore the fatigue on the agents during JFK's travels through Texas, why they chose an open car and re-routing the motorcade and of course, their shock when he was killed. It definitely is at least an different and arguably more human look at the assassination, rather than one that once again drags out the various conspiracies around what actually happened.

PG, are you sending questions to @iamBenLyons? Chop-chop!
I would say mean-spirited idiots
1:03 PM proves you right.
End of Watch will get its European premiere in London at the BFI's London International Film Festival in October. Not only that, it will be in competition so I hope it's revising as we speak. It's unlikely that Jake Gyllenhaal will be there due to the fact that he might be preoccupied on a NYC stage but this is great news for End of Watch, falling as it does on the heels of its appearance at Toronto this month. It's wonderful to see a film of Jake's doing the film festival circuit again - but what a shame that it's happening when he's too busy to shine on all those red carpets.

Ohhhh...can't wait for the Kennedy Detail... My favourite conspiracy :)
and thank you,11.32, that's what I mean :)
Ohhhh...can't wait for the Kennedy Detail...
You're welcome!
I'm currently wading through months and awful months of Reeke
I was there when those comments were made, love that everything is in chronological order - how all those comments, articles, photos, rumors look today to you? Too much details, too subjective, ignorant, smart, ... ?
8.29...
Here is a lot of repetition, where every few days someone comes on and throws something about Heath into the mix and off everyone goes with the same old arguments: godfather, friends/not friends, crush...etc
Or the endless discussion whether Jake is bi or gay...
Or why everyone bothers with Reese, surely this is a Jake fan blog...
And of course, as ever, the usual Hey Trolly! And Go back to Babblerland comments ;)
but overall...as I said...very educational. Have learned a lot about media and pr and Hollywood. It's really odd though, reading about this and what people predict for Jake's future and here we are 4 years later and most of it THANK GOD has not come true (eg marrying Reese ><).
Also great are the other discussions like Prop8 although I don't always read everything.
Thanks for the answer :)
About Hollywood PR discussed here - all you have to do is read and use your brain.

Caught in the Act!
How Hollywood's bold-faced names secretly steer the celebrity news machine.
At tomorrow night's Academy Awards, celebrities will smile and turn as they parade down the red carpet before a phalanx of cameras. Behind the flashbulbs, a delicate new game is under way between the stars and the vast gossip industry of TV shows, magazines and Web sites that feeds upon them.
It has always been a relationship built upon animosity and mutual need. But tensions have grown with the explosion of media running paparazzi photos of stars canoodling or emerging from coffee shops in frumpy track suits.
Now many stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Jessica Simpson are fighting back. They are hiring their own photographers to capture supposedly private rendezvous, tipping off reporters to their whereabouts and developing relationships of mutual back-scratching with magazine editors.
The result is the flowering of a genre: fake paparazzi journalism, or the staging of "unstaged" moments. It is an art form that benefits both stars and the press. Stars get to participate in the framing of their image and magazines appear to give readers a glimpse of the real celebrity untouched by public-relations varnish.
When Ms. Paltrow gave birth in 2004, she knew there would be a high bounty on the first photo of her newborn daughter. A staple of the celebrity press, the actress and her husband, Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay, decided to take matters into their own hands and tip off a photographer they knew, Steve Sands.
Mr. Sands took what appeared to be surprise shots of the two emerging from the hospital in London with the baby and sold them to People for $125,000, according to a person familiar with the arrangement. Larry Hackett, managing editor of People, says he knew that Mr. Sands had been tipped off by Ms. Paltrow. But he didn't see the need to inform readers about it. "I just don't know how illuminating it is," he says.
Stephen Huvane, a publicist at public-relations firm PMK/HBH who handles Ms. Paltrow, confirms Mr. Sands's account. "You'll see a lot more of that happening," says Mr. Huvane.
Pictures such as the one of Ms. Paltrow help the stars stay in the limelight -- but on their terms. "When celebrities do this, it's a way for them to deliver news that they want delivered," says Bonnie Fuller, the editorial director of American Media Inc., which publishes Star and the National Enquirer. By strategically sating the demand for images, stars may be able to tame the paparazzi mob -- although in Ms. Paltrow's case, photographers continued to stake out her home for shots of her and the baby.
The current strategies hark back to the Hollywood of the 1940s and 1950s, when studios, movie stars and the press worked hand-in-hand to create and maintain screen icons for worshipful fans. Today, the coverage of the stars has exploded. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, circulation of US Weekly stood at an average of 1,662,000 in the six months ending in January of this year, up 12.7% from the same period a year earlier. Circulation at Bauer Publishing's InTouch climbed 15.5% to 1,178,000, and at Star rose 12.3% to 1,460,000.
The magazines are lucrative. US Weekly sells a million copies a week on the newsstand at $3.49 apiece. The magazine turns an operating profit of $50 million a year, says a person familiar with its accounts. People, which has a circulation of 3.8 million, brings in by far the most revenue and profit of any of the 154 magazines owned by Time Inc., a division of Time Warner Inc. TWX +2.18%
Network TV programs like Access Hollywood, cable channels like E! Entertainment Television Inc. and Web sites have added to the coverage. All these outlets compete for photos documenting the daily lives of a small cast of celebrities. These stars, in turn, seek to control their images without appearing to, because doing so would ruin their mystique.
"All those dirty little secrets in Hollywood include tipping paparazzi off and playing games with them," says New York-based public-relations professional Ken Sunshine, whose clients include corporations and stars such as Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio. He says people might find that "unethical" if they knew about it, "but unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of the business."
Magazines have generally played along. In 2003, Ms. Jolie tipped off US Weekly that she would appear in a park one afternoon with her adopted son, Maddox, according to two people familiar with the situation. The actress had recently divorced actor Billy Bob Thornton, a relationship which was portrayed as reckless and bizarre. These two people say US Weekly knew Ms. Jolie had green-lighted the photo, which softened her image by showing her maternal side. However, the magazine didn't tell readers about it. Repeated calls to Ms. Jolie's manager for comment were not returned.
Mr. Hackett of People says Ms. Jolie, who does not have a publicist, is among the most sophisticated manipulators of the press. "She is totally, totally using it," he says. "I think that's brilliant."
Even images that are clearly taken with a star's consent may conceal deeper ties between the star and the media. Ms. Simpson, a pop singer, had a close relationship with US Weekly, but it became contentious after the magazine broke the news that she was breaking up with husband Nick Lachey, who starred with Ms. Simpson in a reality-TV show. Ms. Simpson formed a business relationship with OK! USA, a weekly published by London-based Northern & Shell PLC that sometimes pays celebrities for access and lets them approve magazine layouts. The deal with Ms. Simpson requires the star to appear in the magazine a certain number of times in exchange for payment, according to the magazine. A publicist for Ms. Simpson declined to comment.
In the old studio era, too, celebrities and the press were co-conspirators in crafting storylines that were often distant from reality. A famous instance was Rock Hudson, who despite being secretly gay was publicly married to Phyllis Gates.
By the 1960s, when Marilyn Monroe's tragic life became a public drama and television dimmed the pre-eminence of Hollywood movies, the media grew beyond its role as a publicity mouthpiece. A raft of tabloids began publishing more sensational stories that claimed to get around the glossy images projected by the studios. These tabloids had titles like "Hollywood Confidential," "Hush-Hush," "Inside Story" and "The Lowdown."
People magazine, introduced in 1974, combined celebrity coverage with the journalistic heritage of parent Time Inc. For years People was the only publication of its kind and an essential tool for celebrities to promote their careers. "There was a lot more access then," says Susan Toepfer, a former deputy managing editor at People who is now editor in chief of Quick & Simple. "When I was writing about celebrities in the '70s and '80s, you could spend days with them."
But magazines soon discovered that so-called write-arounds, stories written without the cooperation of the star and using anonymous sources, were more popular. The stories were juicier and the stars seemed more human. In 1991, for instance, People published stories such as "The Big Breakup!" detailing the relationship between Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland, and the next year the magazine did an expose called "Plastic Surgery Of The Stars."
In response, the celebrities and their handlers circled the wagons. Publicists began forcing reporters to sign agreements to avoid certain topics or demanding approval over writers and cover layouts.
In 1992, the editors of People gathered in Aspen, Colo., to discuss what was working and what wasn't, recalls Jack Kelley, a former Los Angeles bureau chief for the magazine. Cover stories written with a celebrity's cooperation had a newsstand "sell-through" of 49.3%, meaning about half of the copies distributed to newsstands got sold. Write-arounds had a sell-through of 67.4%. "It was kind of a no-brainer," says Mr. Kelley. "At that point, we decided we weren't going to worry so much about cooperation. We were going to approach celebrity reporting like any reporting."
The arrival of Ms. Fuller at US Weekly in 2002 raised the tensions even higher. She pioneered the photography-heavy coverage popular today, and paid for paparazzi photos depicting the stars in an unflattering light. A recent example was the image of singer Britney Spears driving down a freeway with her baby in her lap. It appeared in Star magazine, which Ms. Fuller now supervises in her post at American Media.
A new generation of "stalkarazzi" has specialized in capturing awkward moments. Mr. Sunshine, the New York publicist, recalls one occasion when he went to the bathroom with a client. "We were about to go to the urinal," he says, "and someone pointed to a stall half-opened. I pushed the door open and there was a guy with a long lens in there about to take a photo." This year California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that attempts to crack down on stalkarazzi.
The photographers' onslaught has put stars in a tough spot. If they ignore the magazines, they let such pictures define their public image. But sitting down for formulaic interviews and staged publicity shots won't necessarily satisfy the magazines' lust for juicy stories.
The answer is manipulation so subtle it's hard to say if there's any manipulation at all. In January, when rumors swirled in the press that Ms. Jolie might be pregnant with the child of actor Brad Pitt, Ms. Jolie arranged for an employee of the charity Yéle Haiti to take a picture of her with her growing belly.
Ms. Jolie then let Yéle Haiti sell the picture to People, according to Mr. Hackett, the magazine's managing editor, and a representative for Mr. Pitt. A person familiar with the situation says People paid $400,000 for the picture. It appeared on the cover of the magazine with the headline: "Angelina Reveals: 'Yes, I'm Pregnant.' " (The incident was first reported by The New York Post.)
By arranging the Haiti photo, Ms. Jolie reaped several benefits. She ensured the picture was flattering. In diverting the money to charity, she put a twist on a tactic used by celebrities in recent years in which they arrange to be paid for wedding or baby photos with the proceeds going to charity. And Ms. Jolie reminded fans of her devotion to humanitarian causes. She had taken a hit months earlier when she struck up a relationship with Mr. Pitt shortly after his marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston broke up.
In many cases, stars don't need to try that hard. When celebrities pick a location like the terrace at the Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills, they know they're liable to appear in the glossies the next week. A bank of photographers regularly sits on the other side of the street with long-range lenses. Actor Tom Cruise was thus captured on film last year when he roared up to the Ivy on his motorcycle accompanied by then-new girlfriend Katie Holmes.
Similarly, when speculation was mounting about Mr. Cruise's romance with actress Penelope Cruz after his breakup with Nicole Kidman, the new couple showed up for lunch at the Beverly Hills restaurant Spago. Photographer Steve Granitz, who has photographed Mr. Cruise regularly since 1981, says he got a tip about the couple's presence. When Mr. Granitz arrived with his camera, Mr. Cruise and Ms. Cruz emerged from the doorway, smiled and kissed. The images, which looked like standard-issue paparazzi shots, were published in nearly all the celebrity magazines that week.
"I would probably say at least 50% of what you see in terms of Hollywood coverage is something that was not necessarily born organically," says Janice Min, editor in chief of US Weekly. "This is a totally symbiotic relationship. This is how celebrities survive."

Female celebrity relationships and kids are almost always cover stories - so simple and easy to use that and get publicity.
Thanks for that lengthy article. I'll copy&paste&save and read later. :)
A lot of publicity whores use the same, old formula to turn bad marriage news into "I'm so happy and blessed" propaganda.
Soon after divorce, Jennifer lopez "dated" closeted gay Bradley Cooper - younger and more popular man than her ex-husband.
She used that time to find much younger man (rumored to be gay), someone who was interested in long term "relationship".
Easy money!
Thanks for that lengthy article.
Enjoy, it's very educational :)

Cute cop!
LAOD LOL!
Ever since Taylor Swift's Sweet Valley High episode of a song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" came out, every ho with only time on their hands (see: bloggers, the media, bloggers, office workers, bloggers and the unemployed on a break from watching People's Court reruns) has been wondering WHO IS IT ABOUT?!!! Joe Jonas already said, "Gurrrrl, it ain't me" and based on the title alone, most of us figured it was about post-pubescence. But UsWeekly (via Hollywood Life) says they know who it is and they say Jake Gyllenhaal was the inspiration for that mess.
MK knows just how to sum things up!
Small world!
The arrival of Ms. Fuller at US Weekly in 2002 raised the tensions even higher.
She was there during Reeke 'Us Weekly' covers time.

Just found this....
Yes, I remember that - I think it was from scanned article (IHJ gallery).
"Around the same time, Jake was flying high after his award winning performance in This Is Our Youth with Hayden Christensen as well as acting alongside Jennifer Aniston in The Good Girl. When asked to pick which gave the greater career high, Jake quipped 'I don't know... How about making out with Darth Vader?'"

Who is Michael? And where is Regis???!
Lol, where have you been? Regis is dead! Actually I lie, Regis retired like a year ago. Michael Strahan is Kelly Ripa's new co-host just announced earlier this week.
LOL, here they go!
Yes PG, of course that's "Austin"!
Let's presume that's Austin.
We know that Jake and Austin are still friends - Berlin, lunch with Levine.
We know that Austin has friends in New York and visits from time to time.
We know that Austin prefers to spend his free time in Austin, TX while Jake is in New York.
So what if that is Austin?
OMG will forget their "Austin and Jake are so deep in the closet that they can't even be in the same city at the same time" (they used that "argument" 1.000 times) and pretend that after all that effor to hide "relationship" it makes sense to go out together to buy some junk food.
That's OMG "logic"! lol
Do you excuse but is there indeed someone convinced who that guy is Austin? to me it seems obvious that is not him.
Lol, where have you been? Regis is dead! Actually I lie, Regis retired like a year ago. Michael Strahan is Kelly Ripa's new co-host just announced earlier this week.
thanks, I didn't know it, I don't live in America, I am sorry , it will be always Regis and Kelly to me:)
to me it seems obvious that is not him.
Yes, obvious to rational thinking people. But since we can't see his face and he appears tall and thin automatically it's Austin to OMG. ;-)
But this guy has blonde hair or however clear, and indeed he looks like Brian O'Byrne, as someone has already said.
Minor details!!!
Sometimes it's infuriating the way OMG mystifies reality

10:25 PM - aren't you embarrassed to write moronic things like that? You should be.
Fans who believe Jake is gay have no reason to be nervous if he's dating a man.
I didn't know Austin's mom had the crncer, God blesses her and all of her family.Really we don't know anything about life of these people and we can only speculate, and sincerely now I feel me a fool to have discussed of ears, Leadville and nonsense as these.
I know, but taking life too seriously is bad idea :)
You are right, but this is the only life that we have better take it seriously sometime:)

Brian is not in End of Watch, he is in the play in theater.
Ha! There you go... Even more reason why I have no idea. Somehow he looks nothing like the guy in the play...mmm but then I wasn't reeeeally looking at him anyway...
Jake's going to Toronto today, right?
Geez it's too early for this...of course I remember reading Brian's name but that's all :s

PG thinks Austin is making a fool of himself by tweeting empty love messages to these young girls. In reality, PG is just jealous because @GoosesTile hasn't got a DM from Austin (and she isn't young anymore) LOL!
Fingers crossed for PG to get love DM from Austin!!!
4.37 Naaa, don't worry, I didn't mistake Brian for Michael (or vice versa :s) I guess my brain was still on EoW when this came up.
Anyway..not important. ;)
I hate waiting for films to hit the cinemas...
..and is it just me or is Chris's blog gone?
Extra Interview EoW
'...Hollywood's softest actor...'
Sorry if it has been posted before..
Thanks for posting, 1:17 PM!
"Softest actor" - not sure what that means, but doesn't sound like a compliment to me.
It's hard at first to figure out what Ayer thinks of his protagonist Officer Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal), a macho "ghetto street cop" whose plan to make a documentary about life on the force (he carries a camera along on his beat and in the police house, to the chagrin of colleagues) looks less journalistic than narcissistic. The voiceover with which he opens End of Watch starts off street-tough, then pivots: "beyond my badge is a heart like yours," he says, continuing to speak of his inner yearnings. David Sardy's score turns melodramatic alongside him, sounding like ironic commentary on this self-aggrandizement, but eventually it's clear Ayer's film buys what Taylor's selling. Viewers may too, as Gyllenhaal thoroughly inhabits this problematic personality.
Hollywood Reporter - Film Review: End of Watch
Another major autumn release also premieres at Toronto over the opening weekend. "End of Watch" is a cop buddy movie, but simply naming the genre is unfair to it. It's more about a relationship between two men doing an impossible job. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña give two of their best performances in careers with lots of them, as Taylor and Zavala, Los Angeles street cops in a tough, largely Mexican-American district.
Toronto #1: Good films are back in season
With an ear for the vernacular and an eye for intense but unglamorized violence, Ayer depicts the way well-trained professionals boiling over with both adrenaline and ego respond to potentially life-threatening situations, incorporating footage from other cameras, including chilling "top-secret" surveillance video and clips pulled from an iPhone-documented drive-by. Ultimately, the mock-doc device works because Gyllenhaal and Pena so completely reinvent themselves in-character. Instead of wearing the roles like costumes or uniforms, they let the job seep into their skin, a feat without which "End of Watch's" pseudo-reality never would have worked.

It should seem ludicrous, this top-heavy blend of action and drama, but Ayer whips us along, outpacing implausibility at every turn. It helps that Gyllenhaal and Peña are immediately likable as introspective Taylor and his bullish sidekick. Ayer's dialogue bolsters the quieter moments – a career-born hybrid of police code and street slang that's perfect for two regular cops shooting the breeze. On the sidelines stand Anna Kendrick and Natalie Martinez as Taylor's scientist girlfriend and Zavala's pregnant wife, but they're LAPD WAGs – on hand only to contextualise how strongly these family guys feel for each other. ...
You could fill the charge sheet with such plausibility issues, yet End of Watch is a hard one to take down. The director has talked about the film as a thought-piece – a comment on inner-city communities forced to police violence with violence, but it's not to be taken that seriously. Switch on the siren, put the pedal to the floor. Revel in the pace and passion of a film-maker policing a field that is now unquestionably his.
Not bad! :)
Not at all:)
Too bad Jake doesn't have more time for promoting EOW.

You think you know the story, but you don’t. Intense and intimate, this is a haunting look into a type of brotherhood we’ve never seen before captured on film. It places the audience in the front seat of the in-your-face action. Ayers also gives us a surprising amount of tension-relieving laughter that helps viewers care about the characters. Gyllenhaal and Peña are nothing short of amazing, and I suspect they will earn some well-deserved awards buzz.
