The images are countless, breathtaking: Four editors-in-chief, 16 years online, piles of exclusives, plenty of gossip, invented languages, maddeningly fascinating celebrities (dead and alive) and most importantly — you. The reader.
We did this for two decades, folks! When The Awful Truth, which I founded at Premiere magazine 20 years ago, ends this week, it's not the deliciously decadent Blind Vices I will miss the most...
It's you barking types who always made me feel gloriously alive, with all you had to say and scream and be so real about.
That community is my life's (professional) work up until now. It has meant more to me than each of you will ever know.
But it really is time to move on.
If you don't agree, just keep in mind that when I first took this job at E!—in 1996, when the network founded E! Online—I was working at the established and respected Premiere magazine. Scores of people told me, "Online just isn't the place to go."
Everybody told me to pass on the job, and so I did. Then I called back the next day and an amazing man named Lew Harris said, yes, of course, I could change my mind. And I did.
So that's what I'd like my last words to be: Always do what you're not supposed to do.

Following Quentin Tarantino is no easy task, but director David Ayer did just that Saturday afternoon in Hall H at Comic-Con for his latest cop drama End of Watch. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two beat cops who stumble upon some surprising information that makes them targets of a drug cartel. Though Ayer’s previous films (he wrote Training Day and wrote and directed 2006’s Harsh Times) focus on corrupted officers of the law, End of Watch is a change of pace in that Gyllenhaal and Pena play honest, hard-working cops just trying to do their job well.
Though I figured I pretty much knew what I was in for with the film, the footage and panel from Comic-Con really got me enthused for a type of cop drama that we haven’t seen in a very long time. Hit the jump to read my full recap of the End of Watch panel at Comic-Con 2012.
The panel kicked off by first showing the trailer for the film. If you haven’t seen it, what’s most striking is that it’s shot in a documentary style with a lot of handheld. They even created camera rigs specifically to be hooked up to the actors to give the audience a “point-of-view” shot.
Weintraub then introduced Pena and Ayer, the latter of whom told the audience that the last time he was in San Diego, he was stationed here. A clip rolled that showed Gyllenhaal apologizing for not being able to make the trip to Comic-Con, then he introduced three really promising clips.
The first clip was all footage captured on a camera embedded into the cop car, complete with a time stamp that made it look like official footage. Gyllenhaal had a touching voice over while the car drove about a cop’s duty to protect and to serve, and towards the end of the clip we see the cop car chasing after another car. They get the other car off the road and two men with guns pop out and start shooting at the car (thus at Gyllenhaal and Pena). It was intense watching this happen through the car cam, as it gives the audience a sense of actually being there with the officers. There’s no stylization; you get the idea that this is what it’s really like.
The next clip was a really, really funny scene between Pena and Gyllenhaal that Ayer later revealed was completely improvised. They’re busting each other’s balls about their significant others, and the two actors clearly have great chemistry.
The final clip followed Pena and Gyllenhaal running into a burning house to rescue a family trapped inside. The camera work inside the house was entirely handheld, and actually made it kind of difficult to tell what was going on. It felt very claustrophobic, but I guess that’s the point. I’d assume the feeling of watching this sequence is comparable to actually running into a burning house.

•Ayer was inspired by his friend who was a cop, who told him that if he or his partner were injured fatally on duty, the other partner would “pop” him to finish the job and take care of his family. That level of commitment and the bond between the partners inspired him.
Gyllenhaal could not attend the panel because he is shooting a film in Toronto, but he did offer the Comic-Con crowd a video message in which he said they were "all incredibly proud" of the film.

@5.52. No, I don’t really know what you’re talking about because we see things very differently. I believe he has been actively dating but I don’t think he purposely flaunts every date or casual relationship in the press. Some of these “acquaintance” we find out about through “sightings and photos” etc. – some we don’t - and some are simply incorrect.
I’m not sure how you can determine whether something is a real date / a “sexual relationship” based on twitter or pap shots. What does it “look like”? What kind of information are you expecting to get from online gossip, tabloids etc?
I don’t know if he was on a date in the West Village but for some reason the twitter-source assumed he was with his GF – leading me to believe he was at least spotted alone with a (probably fairly attractive) woman and that they weren’t walking miles apart if giving off a “GF/BF” vibe.
The thing is, nothing will ever convince you!
- Whenever we get private sightings (twitter etc) you discount them because “Jake would never hide a female date or girlfriend” (he only gets together with women for photo-ops and PR!).

There is no way that Jake could possibly be annoyed by having a pap take his pic on the movie set. The movie has been filming for the past 2 weeks at least and every day there are pap pics of the 2 leads - Dakota Fanning & Elizabeth Olsen. He would have known full well before he went that the paps would take his pic. If he didn't want his pic taken then he wouldn't have gone. Seems like Jake just decided to get some facetime online.
To me it looks like Jake decided to support his mother by visiting her movie set.

AURORA, Colorado - Ten people are dead after a shooting at a Denver area movie theater.
Our Gannett partner, KUSA, reports a mass casualty incident took place at Century 16 Movie Theaters in Aurora, Colorado.
ABC News is reporting that ten people are dead and at least 20 are injured after a shooting and explosion of some sort. The incident happened inside of one of the movie theaters, during the premier of the movie "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises." Reportedly, the incident happened about a half hour into the showing of the movie.

It's awful. Only to protect your home (inside your premises) and your loved ones should you ever have a gun. Even then, I'm not sure. There should never be laws in place so that people can carry concealed weapons in public places. That needs to be changed, gun lobby be damned. My heart goes out to the families - little children were there at the theater. :(

We have to realize it is no longer the Wild West in this country. Perhaps if more people talk about this issue and address it, we can find a way to protect future lives, and be like other civilized countries.
I saw TDKR, and it is a wonderful film, outstanding. It is a family film, believe it or not. Yes, there is violence, but less than other films, and it is not gratuitous. At it's heart, it is not a violent film. No, it really isn't about OWS or the haves vs the have-nots, either. It's sad to also see a lot of articles trying to draw parallels between a film and something that makes no sense whatsoever.

She's beautiful, in a tough-cookie way. There's a little ambiguity about her too, I thought. How could I forget Matthew Modine also. There's a lot of warmth and love at the heart of this film, in some surprising ways. It's a perfect ending to the trilogy.
There's a scene where Juno Temple's character is hugging her, and then Selina is affectionate with Bruce too. So who knows? :)
The other thing was there was a trailer for Man of Steel with Henry Cavill - it looks fantastic, a different take.

Another thing - the TDKR showing I went to was sold out - and at the end the entire theater cheered and clapped. The tragedy was never far from our thoughts, I think, and everyone seemed a little kinder and gentler to each other today. When certain events happened and certain characters appeared, there was applause also.
I just came back from TDKR--it was SOLD OUT and PACKED. The film was okay--way too long (and I admit I preferred TDK--probably because Heath was so great as Joker but I do think it was a better, tighter film) but I do like the ending--it finally had a glimmer of hope and was kind of touching.
I liked the Man of Steel trailer. Henry Cavill looks good.

Anne is good as Catwoman BUT unfortunately she never dominates the film the way Heath did as Joker with the TDK. In fact, she's written almost as an afterthought which sucks to me because her character is SO iconic. Michelle Pfeiffer definitely had showier scenes as Catwoman in "Batman Returns."
My favorite in the film was JGL--he was like the moral conscience of the film. He was excellent. I liked him a lot.
Yes, JGL is gorgeous in it too - especially at the ending. One of his scenes is worthy of an award all by itself, just that one scene - it was so moving.
Critics aren't as good as for TDK.
Heath's performance was stellar. I see the trilogy as one story now. Christian has made an incredible Batman too.
