Feels So Good That It Can’t Be Wrong

Ricky Martin Ricky Martin, "Me" book signing, November 2010

There is something beautiful in witnessing a major celebrity in the throes of profound and real transformation. A week before we meet, Ricky Martin had made a surprise appearance at the annual Human Rights Campaign national dinner to pledge his support. “Something as simple as standing at that dinner and saying, ‘I’m gay,’ creates so may emotions I’ve never felt before,” he admits. “I didn’t do it earlier because of fear, and, bottom line, it was all in my head. I was seduced by fear, and I was sabotaging most of my life -- my music, my relationships with my friends, with my family, with everybody. That’s something I need to share because I know that a lot of people are going through what I went through, no matter what their age, and fear cannot control us.”

Ricky Martin is about to share big time -- with his new memoir, Me, a remarkably heartfelt account of his journey from teen group Menudo to fatherhood, delivered in a frank, conversational style that doesn’t economize on the truth. It includes accounts of his first passionate affairs -- with men and with women -- as well as his struggle to reconcile his conflicted yearnings with his rapid ascent in America. The pivotal year is 1999, at which Martin performed his World Cup anthem, “La Copa de la Vida,” at the Grammys. Largely unknown in the United States beyond Hispanic audiences, he left the stage as a breathless Rosie O’Donnell (the evening’s host) exclaimed, “Who was that cutie patootie?”

It was connecting the dots that led directly to Martin’s tweet last March. In his memoir, he recounts how friends and colleagues remonstrated with him to hold off: “I ignored all their recommendations, and by the end, when they came to me with the argument that I shouldn’t do it during Easter because it might offend my Christian fans, I said: ‘What part of ‘I can’t take it any more’ do you not understand? What about me?’”

Above all, he says he worried about Matteo and Valentino having to answer for their father’s untruths. How would they respond as they grew older? Would they have to lie on his behalf? “How could I teach my kids to lie?” he asks. “How could I teach them not to be themselves?” And, as simple as that, he realized he couldn’t and wouldn’t. “My children will grow up with no prejudice,” he says. “As parents, we need to create a new way of thinking for our kids, in which we accept, and we love, and we can vibe with everybody.”

This past year, OMG folks discovered a photo where Jake and Austin were at the same party in June, 2002 and Maggie was there too...five months before TDAT even began filming in Montreal. Logic would tell me that those closest to Jake were worried about any rumors leaking out while he was literally, "holed" up in Canada for six months with this guy. That's why Jake came down periodically to NY to take those "candid" photo ops with the Dunster. Even though Jake was hardly with her, there were rumors by the end of the TDAT shoot in March, 2003 that Jake was head over heels in love with Kiki. Does this sound eerily familiar? The script never changes.

Very interesting :)

Crash was a big ensemble piece that had a bunch of well liked and well connected actors in it, all of whom were pushing for it HARD. And if you'd been around at any of the parties when awards season came around you would have heard them and known this. It was the non-actors - the directors, the producers, the editors - that were voting for BBM, not the actors.

Yes, I was at those industry parties and the pushback against Brokeback Mountain started right after the movie won the BAFTA. No way was a "gay" film going to win Best Picture. I remember the disgusting conversations taking place behind the scenes. It had nothing to do with Crash being the sentimental favorite. Quite the contrary. The Old Guard stepped in and made sure a more "acceptable" movie took the grand prize. Plain and simple.

Anonymous said...

4:38 PM, what are you talking about? Tony Curtis and other Ampas members admitted they didn't watch BBM and still voted. BBM lost Best Picture because of its subject matter. Crash didn't win, BBM lost like it was supposed to.

I would be most likely to believe your view, 18:01.

In fact, I would love to do some checking out on the repression that is going on in Hollywood because Jake's bearding just reeks (LOL - sorry for the pun!) of him needing to abide by the rules of Old Hollywood.

The documentary Outrage on HBO which is about closeting and repression in Washington D.C. sounds exactly like what we are seeing in Hollywood.

I would be really curious to read Ricky Martin's autobiography that is out (is it an autobio or a bio?) to see if there is any insight to this.

I find it hard to believe that alot of actors/actresses would be doing all the shenanigans that they do if they could be out & open about their sexuality.

Like I've said before, the repression and the old way of thinking going on in Hollywood needs to come down just like that statue of Sadaam Hussein.

It's time the LGBT community gets to live the way they have every right to live - out in the open, with same benefits as everyone else, without fear of repercussions.

I'm so glad someone is speaking out on this. Thank you.

I meant exactly what I said. Tony Curtis came on Fox news and talked about how Brokeback must not win because it didn't deserve such a honor. I didn't address whether he saw the movie or not. In fact, you are helping to prove my point about Hollywood homophobia. Thank you.

Alice in Wonderland is her most recent big success, and the rest of the films are ones in which she was a lead actress, not a supporting one.

It's an AMPAS press release. BBM received received more Oscar noms than any of those other movies. To so obviously exclude it is ridiculous.

Wait a minute. Someone is confused. Who was arguing that there isn't HW homophobia? I didn't see anyone saying that.

How when you were saying the opposite in your 4:38 PM post - "There was no anti-gay "fix."?

Anonymous said...

"It's an AMPAS press release. BBM received received more Oscar noms than any of those other movies"

All her co-stars got a nomination and she didn't. So, maybe it doesn't look nice to mention BBM.IMO, Anne did a better acting job than Michelle Williams but at that time it was Michelle the one with a bigger PR.

"I was at those industry parties and the pushback against Brokeback Mountain started right after the movie won the BAFTA. No way was a "gay" film going to win Best Picture"

Nonsense. MILK won Oscars, and it was a movie about a civil rights activist. That should have offended them a lot more than a movie about 2 closeted homos.

AMPAS loves biopics. Gay cowboys are something else.

I'm not the 4:38 poster. I'm the 3:32 and 6:01 commenter. Anons are hard to keep track of.

I'll say it again. No way was Brokeback Mountain going to win the Best Picture. Yes, the fix was in. No doubt in my mind. I was there.

Milk was a BIOPIC, BBM was a rawly depicted LOVE STORY. Big difference.

Milk is exactly the kind of movie that is acceptable to the Hollywood elites. Politcally, not socially significant or impactful. The latter is a much more scary concept. Civil rights makes one feel like they are on the right side of history, but social justice requires CHANGE. Believe me, a movie about the love between two men who want to live a life together is off the chart revolutionary. A politial figure getting assassinated by a nut is what Hollywood calls entertainment.

Funny, I had a discussion with a friend the other day how I thought Anne was overlooked for BBM and my friend meant that her role was simply too small. Anne's phone scene with Heath beat everything Michelle did IMO.

That said, Michelle gives always similar, but good performances in dramas. When the drama happens to be well received like Blue Valentine, she'll continue to get Oscar nods. What I like about Anne is that she's brave trying out different genres, she may not receive as many awards in her professional life as Michelle will, but she'll be more experienced within film world. Comedy, drama, sience fiction, mainstream movies, indie movies...
Making movies should be about fun too.

I think all the actors did what they needed to do throughout the film. That is why I still hold Brokeback Mountain dear to my heart. Obviously, others feel the same. Everyone committed to the love story in such a profound and honest way, there was never an inauthenic moment. I was moved from the beginning to the end.

Michelle did an ok job on BBM but the kitchen fight scene bothers me. Her character was like 40 years old and she looked 18!

But I guess it was the makeup artist the ones who failed there..

IA. Giving movies like Milk recognition makes HW feels good about themselves, they can pat themselves on the back for being progressive, etc., but HW does not want social change if they think it would impact the bottom line.

Well Ennis was 19 when he married Alma in 1963 and it was not uncommon for the woman to be either the same age or probably two-four years younger than the man during that time period. More than likely Alma was 17 or 18 when she married Ennis in 1963. Therefore, she would only have been about 33 when the Thanskgiving scene took place in 1978. I think she looked like a woman in her early thirties.

Lureen didn't age much either, if you really think about it. Probably the only character who looked like time had worn him down was Ennis. All the way down to the way he walked, dressed and talked. I still think Heath should have won the Academy Award.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of biopics, I wonder if Jake is making any progress on the Namath movie.

Anonymous said...

I still think Heath should have won the Academy Award.

Even though I was indifferent towards Heath as a person, I always respected him as an actor. It seemed that he put much thought into his characters. He starred in a slew of bad movies, but in most of them he gave great performances. He was just not lucky with his movies, like Jake right now. I'm not saying Jake is as great an actor as Heath was (I do think Jake is solid enough and deserves to be in better movies though).

As for Anne, she was 21 when they shot BBM and in her older years as Lureen she looked older than Michelle's character (and Michelle's older than Anne IRL).

Anonymous said...

I vividly remember being impressed by Anne's and Heath's interpretations of their characters and intelligence in interviews. Of course I "loved" Jake most because of his fun personality and charm. :)

Anonymous said...

^^And I remember being annoyed at Jake and Michelle for saying Ennis and Jack had been together for 30 years. When in fact it was 20 years. IDK, it bothered me back than that two of the main actors didn't know that. Tsk, tsk, tsk. ;)

Don't be too hard on Jake. He also said that Jack and Ennis weren't really gay. Just two souls who met one summer. Even James Schamus couldn't believe it. So wonder Annie Proulx recently bragged about Heath Ledger's performance but when she was asked about Jake, she said, "He's a sweet boy." LOL.

In interviews during BBM promotion in 05/06. They are probably just bad at math. Jake def. is, he said so once. ;)

Love and Other Drugs
Domestic Total as of Nov. 28, 2010

$13,901,532

Box Office plummeted on Sunday -47%

Anonymous said...

Box Office Mojo:

Few were high on Love and Other Drugs, which took in $9.7 million on close to 2,700 screens at 2,455 locations, tallying $13.9 million in five days. There were no recent direct Thanksgiving antecedents to compare it to, but, among other releases, business wasn't much better than low performers like Love Happens and A Lot Like Love. According to distributor 20th Century Fox, 63 percent of Love's audience was female and 60 percent was aged 25 years and older.

Looks like the Taylor Swift bearding didn't bring in that pigtailed, make a heart with your hand, demographic. Damn Jake. Looks like you wasted another weekend out of your life. That is if you were really with her that long. Let's see. How long does it take to place a few strategic photos and plant twitter sightings everywhere? Oh, and then there was the Whole Foods post too.

WDW has a review from British Empire. Calling Anne the most versatile actress in mainstream cinema. What a compliment!
Jake is praised too, but not as much.

Anonymous said...

He also said that Jack and Ennis weren't really gay. Just two souls who met one summer.

LOL. Between this and the 30 years comment no wonder he and Heath had arguments onset. Heath was very serious about his work, Jake seems like whatever. ;)

$13,901,532 is not bad. This is a rom-com after all, not The Dark Knight...

Anonymous said...

Jake seems like whatever. ;)

He gives off the "whatever vibe" often. If you compare his filmography with the ones of his colleagues' form his age group, you'll notice he works much, much less. He's a bit on the lazy side of life, I think. He could work much more and do much better work, only if he wanted to. I strongly believe that.

Anonymous said...

^^ Calling Christopher Nolan! Seriously though, if Jake wants to be a "star" (no matter what he says that's what probably any actor wants) and not be known for who he "dates"-- he needs a big budget movie where he is not the star but part of a bigger ensemble (the big budget Prince of Persia didn't do it right?) Unfortunately, he doesn't put asses in seats, so it's gotta be second or third billing for him for mainstream movies.

Anonymous said...

Second, third billing isn't bad either, look at JGL in Inception.

Anonymous said...

Although to be fair PoP did quite well overseas.

Anonymous said...

^244 millions overseas, 90 domestically = 335 mil. internationally. I'm no expert but that's not THAT bad. Plus it did well with dvd sales.

Anonymous said...

Overseas? Good. He can go make some movies in the foreign market, just like David Carradaine used to do. Bon Voyage,Jake!

Anonymous said...

Box Office plummeted on Sunday -47%

So WOM couldn't have been so great.

Anonymous said...

PoP didn't turn into a franchise, and that was what they wanted. You don't spend that kind of money and time on a movie for "not that bad." It wasn't an awful movie, but the build-up to it was so damn long it raised expectations even higher.

Anonymous said...

Note to Jakes PR since we know you hang around here to monitor comments. What is cute and charming at 20 does not play at 30. Floating stories that your sister set you up with Kirsten was cute. Aww Jake is young and shy. Gay too of course but that is beside the point. But floating a story that your sister had to set you up with Swift at age 30 leads to WTF? Hes 30 and he cant hunt down a woman on his own. We all know she just hunted down the next beard but it does not help your current inability to attract a heterosexual male audience by floating stories that make you look like a wimp.

Anonymous said...

We all know she just hunted down the next beard

^LOL. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Gwyneth Paltrow played a part in this fiasco between Swifty and Jakey. She's been hanging out with the Nashville crowd for over a year for that "Country Strong" film which is coming out in January. Probably would explain Jake giving Paltrow that Elle award in October too. I know I'm not the only one who said, "Jake and Paltrow are great friends? Really?"

Anonymous said...

So while Anne, Natalie Portman, James Franco, Mila Kunis and other stars are here in NYC at the Gotham Independant Film Awards, Jake is in Nashville getting lattes and food shopping with a 20yr old teenage. What a way for Jake to push that serious actor/adult man image. Reeke was bad, but I kind of felt like he locked himself into a contract and couldn't get out until it was up. But this Swift bearding has made me loose respect for him. But now it's just fun to watch the latest bearding romance unravel. Jake must be disappointed that his career and box office preformance is not good. But he's now become like a slow moving train wreck. You know the crash is coming but you can't do anything but watch. Wonder if he's just going to tag along her coattails like he did with Reese. Will he just follow her on her tour and just leach of her free private planes, luxury hotel rooms and sightseeing the cities they are in without having to use any of his money. Like he did following Reese to Europe and the DC and Philly.

Too Much Coffee for Jake & Taylor Romance?

After spending the holiday together, Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal have many wondering just how serious these two love birds are.

Unfortunately our hopes of giving our Awful stamp of approval for Jaylor were shattered over the weekend.

Why you ask?

Because they are already going the way of Gyllenspoon.

If you've been a longtime reader of this blolum you know where we're heading.

It's true, Jake and Taylor are keeping their romance hot by...getting steamy cups o' joe.

Say it with us now: Noooooooooo!

Coffee dates are the kiss of death for any couple. OK, well maybe just for a babe attached to gorgeous Jake's arm. Maybe, just maybe, we prefer ice cream excursions.

Swift and Gyllenhaal spent Thanksgiving grabbing maple latte's together in Brooklyn, before he hopped a flight with the country singer to Nashville.

And then an employee at Fido, in Nashville's hip Hillsboro Village, tells us that Taylor and Jake grabbed coffees at the shop on Saturday—which they are supposedly snapped doing here.

Ugh!

We get that Taylor is 20, so romantic wine nights aren't technically legal, but there has to be some another creative way to hang.

Or are we missing something? Is grabbing coffee the new sexy thing?

We get that it's a good day date to get to know someone...but from what we are hearing, Jake's posse (and we can only assume Taylor's too) are pushing this relationship to be more than a casual "fling."

Anonymous said...

So while Anne, Natalie Portman, James Franco, Mila Kunis and other stars are here in NYC at the Gotham Independant Film Awards,

ikr? I don't understand what kind of career plan he has. What's next on his agenda aside from bearding? Where is his ambition? He just had the whole freaking summer off to do nothing. It's laughable to watch him right now, but on the other hand, it's not funny.

Taylor Swift & Jake Gyllenhaal’s Thanksgiving Coffee Date — New Details! EXCLUSIVE!

An eyewitness tells HollywoodLife.com Jake seemed a little nervous and even held his hand on Taylor’s back when they ordered their lattes!
Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal’s new relationship is moving along at an astonishing pace. However, even though they’ve already traveled the world together, an eyewitness tells HollywoodLife.com Jake, 29, acted like a nervous school boy during his coffee date in Brooklyn with Taylor Nov. 25!
“He kind of reminded me of how a guy acts when he is nervous on a first date,” a source, who was at Brooklyn’s popular Gorilla Coffee when the A-list couple visited Thanksgiving morning, says.
“Jake was close to her and had his hand on her lower back when they talked at the counter. He was very gentle toward her and was being super polite.”
Our source continues, “Honestly, I didn’t know they were dating or anything like that, but seeing how they acted while they were here, makes me think they really like each other. He definitely showed a certain ‘this is my girl’ kind of vibe.”
As for Ms. Swift, 20, she was her usual bubbly self. According to our source, she wasn’t awkward or uncomfortable at all.
“She was very talkative, very polite and ended her sentences with ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’” the source says, adding, “They were very nice to people who approached them. There were a few times people mentioned that they loved them. They smiled and thanked everyone. They were quick to say ‘Happy Thanksgiving’ a handful of times to fans and the employees.”

Exactly. If I were his PR I would try to get him a supporting role in a Nolan or Tarantino film - look at JGL, Tom Hardy or even Christoph Waltz - they are "cool" now and fan-boy approved.

Jake can only hope that Source Code will improve his image with the fanboys. Although I have already my reservations since the director is obviously not interested or involved at all.

Anonymous said...

"Fanboys" don't spend the bulk of the money at movie theatres. Women and girls do. So it doesn't matter if Jake appeals to the "fanboys" or not if the bottom dollar is the thing.

Anonymous said...

Why would Jake be nervous? They've already been on numerous dates and were just picking up coffee. Must have been the required pda and public outing away from home and his friends who were chaperoning in NY. Same crappy acting as in Rome.

Reese and Taylor were/are beards and Jake is gay.

They are going for a different approach with this bearding to try to make it more believable. Instead of staging obvious photo ops, they are just going out as much as they can and letting people do the job posting sightings on twitter and facebook and placing cell phone pics instead of paps. It’s more subtle and they can sell the ‘we are so private and low profile’ crap in People Magazine and US Weekly.

They were spotted all over the place during the weekend (Wholefoods, Target, Anchor High, Opryland hotel) and Monday (Crema coffee shop, dining at City House). Going to ‘Target’ is a nice touch as Taylor has an exclusive contract with Target selling a special edition of her album.

Anonymous said...

PR as usual is doing a crappy job. The bearding timing is just so obvious with a new movie coming out and isn’t it ridiculous that he always has to stage this super serious relationships, that after 1 month ‘dating’, they are already spending holidays together and meeting each other families. Also, a 30 year old described as a wimpy school boy is so the opposite of the ‘leading man image’ he is anxiously looking for. It’s also so obvious that he always goes for the same type of beard more famous than him so that he raise his profile and get maximum publicity like a leech.

Is‘New Years Eve’ movie Jake’s next masterpiece? It seems his job will be just acting in a full time bearding gig this year for the tabloids.

I have written about this couple before, but apparently it is getting to the point where some kind of public announcement is coming. I don't remember how I described them in the past, but one is an openly gay male singer and the other is also male and a singer and is in a heterosexual marriage. Apparently, now that our married singer has ended his most recent tour, he is going to file divorce proceedings soon. He and the other singer are tired of living in the shadows and want to bring their relationship out in the open.

They are probably trying to profile her as more mature since there was so much talk about their age difference.

Jake has a fundamental problem with his image which is the same problem PoP had as a film. Nobody knew who they were selling the product and what the target group was (+ the film sucked). Jake had a perfectly good fanbase after BBM but decided to show them the finger with Reeke and get new fans. It didn't happen and now he's in limbo searching for a new fanbase. Who those people are is a mystery. All I know it's not his "special audience".

One might critizise LAOD for some reasons, but at least Ed Zwick showed enthusiasm and interest in promoting and supporting his film.

LOL. Sorry, but I've seen LAOD and it's not a "quality" film, far from it. It's not a terrible film at all, but I doubt anyone would call it "quality" and it has nothing to do with being prudish. The sex scenes and nudity were not the problem with the movie. It was just a big old mess that threw everything in but the kitchen sink, including lame Viagra jokes and gags that weren't funny in the 90s and aren't funny now. Don't get me started on the brother. Like anyone is going to believe he and Jake are related. Zwick never really followed through on his indictment of the pharmaceutical companies and some of the stuff they left out (why doesn't Maggie ever confront Jamie about his job?) doesn't make any sense. Jake and Anne were very good, though. It's frustrating because there was a potential to make a great movie, but Zwick blew it in a lot of ways.

Kind of like there was so much potential for Jake and he blew it, too :(

By the way, is he gay?… And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite… ‘But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?’ Which really made her nervous.”

Why wasn't Jake asked to co-host the Oscars with Anne? Don't laugh--but they're currently starring in a movie together. We know they have chemistry (the movie may not be good but Anne and Jake's chemistry has gotten good reviews). I'm confused as to why he was snubbed in favor of James Franco. At first I thought Jake was asked but said no and then they went to Franco. But let's be honest--Jake would say no to hosting the Oscars? I don't think so.

Depp told the Disney executive ‘all my characters are gay,’

LOL. Gotta love Depp. Kind of the opposite of Jake - none of his characters are gay, including Jake Twist, who apparently wasn't really gay, just a straight guy who met his soulmate on BBM.

No big surprise that the Disney exec was nervous or that she asked Depp if he was gay. Confirms what we knew.

I remember Heath began to date a 19 years old super-model just minutes after his split with babymomma Michelle.

Of course, there was no time to bash him to death for that reason because... he was actually gone almost inmediately.

I wonder what the posters of this site would think of them now as a couple if he hadn't died so soon

Wonder if he's just going to tag along her coattails like he did with Reese. Will he just follow her on her tour and just leach of her free private planes, luxury hotel rooms and sightseeing the cities they are in without having to use any of his money. Like he did following Reese to Europe and the DC and Philly.

Not "her her free private planes, luxury hotel rooms", all that was paid by movie studio and Jake was there to help promotion - not because he can't pay a restaurant meal or can't afford to visit Europe.

Franco is one of the it guys right now. His movie, 127 Hours, is not a huge movie, not promoted nearly as much as LAOD, but he is getting terrific reviews for his performance and most of the critics loved the movie itself. The director of "127 Hours" directed "Slumdog Millionaire" and he's highly respected, too.

Meet Man Hathaway
Some brilliant modern day artist has swapped the faces of Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal on their Entertainment Weekly publicity stunt magazine cover, and you know what? Anne Hathaway makes a pretty hot dude. Like Ashton Kutcher, but more masculine.
Jake, on the other hand, looks like a lesbian dabbling in set design. In other words, gorge.

(It's funny that Anne's face in Jake's body looks a bit like Austin!)

Jake does not "personify" the future of Hollywood." Sad as this reality is to accept.

Whether anyone believes in the Baby Tile component of Ted's Toothy Blind Item, I have to say I wonder if this might not be the main reason for Jake's odd behavior? There's no doubt that he started to go down hill in 2007, just when Ted started writing that he was becoming super-domesticated and swirling his love juices with his boyfriend. I know it's easier and more fun to just explain what's going on with words like "famewhore" and "lazy" and "having bad luck", but I'm now wondering if Jake is just no longer that interested in pursuing his acting career at the same competitive level of his contemporaries because he has a young family he is raising in the closet. He once was the "It" guy in 2005 and early 2006 then suddenly he started making choices that were odd for someone in his position. Reese was bad enough, but this recent bearding episode with Swifty really makes no sense. He lives like a recluse practically all summer long, then reemerges in October only to start up another fake relationship, instead of aggressively going after the best roles. Don't know, of course, but the timing of all this backsliding started in 2007 and continues without interruption today. Most people thought that when Reeke broke-up that we would see the old Jake, but let's be honest, he's nowhere to be found.

No one is defending anyone. Heath has nothing to do with Jake's bearding and famewhoring. Simple as that.

Be honest, you're just looking for excuses to bash Heath so Jake can look better. Although I still don't see what Heath has to do with Jake. Why don't you do that with RDJ, Jamie Foxx or others who are actually close to Jake?

Anonymous said...

for god's sake, give it up already. Jake isn't "dating" - he's faking a relationship with a girl with a tween fanbase who writes fake songs about her fake relationships and looking like an idiot in the process because once again he's following another female around whose more famous than him for the publicity. He's not shagging some sexy young model that he's got the hots for.

Even the fangirls can see that, but they won't admit it, they're just saying things like, "We'll just have to trust his judgment." and "As long as he's happy." Ha!

And give up your phony crap about "being moved" like we all can't see through it.

Hmmm. I have to admit, if I were completely objective, your statement would explain a lot. I use to love Jake and his quirky, ambiguous ways. I do find it hard to believe that he's just a famewhore and lazy ass. Doesn't make sense. No one mentioned it, but Jake said in one of his pre-Thanksgiving interviews that he was spending it with his family and that he was going to brine the Turkey. Then we see some grainy photo of him at Gorilla Coffee in the morning of November 25. His behavior is "odd" and if he does have a child that would, at least, provide a more positive angle on his bizarre behavior.

Martin surprised by parents' acceptance

Ricky Martin was overwhelmed with emotion when he finally revealed his sexuality to his mother and father - because they welcomed the news by expressing their unconditional love for the singer.

The Livin' La Vida Loca hitmaker 'came out' as a gay man in March after wrestling with his feelings for years, and he admits he was prepared for a difficult talk with his parents when he decided to come clean about his chosen lifestyle.

But he was surprised when his mum and dad revealed they were already aware of his homosexuality.

Martin tells U.S. news show Access Hollywood, "(Mum) asked me, 'Baby, are you in love?' And I said, 'Yeah mum, I am in love.' And she asked me, 'Is it a man?' and I thought, 'Wow, this is gonna be easier than what I thought.' And I said, 'Yes mum, it's a man.'

"I was extremely surprised and then she said, 'Come on, give me a hug. You're my son and I love you, and I will always be here for you.' So it was very beautiful.

"My father... he kinda told me. I wanted to tell him and he said, 'You don't have to say a word. I love you and I just want you to be happy.'"

I tend to believe there is a BT, and the "odd" behavior is one reason. Jake seems to go out of the way to show he wasn't with his family or just his family at the holidays, i.e., there could not possibly be a baby or he would be at home.

Don't know that Jake is lazy when it comes to .ovies as much as it is not getting offered work or the kind of work he thinks he should be doing now. Can't seem him taking a role like JGL as it is not "big" enough.

I think Jake first got hurt by holding out for too much money around BBM, and now people do not see him as a box office draw.

I bet it doesn't help that HW sees how crappy his acting is when it comes to beards either. I think it is a good thing for Jake that he is not that phony and bothered on some level, but it is another reason he should not do this.

http://blogs.forbes.com/johndragoon/2010/11/18/what-taylor-swift-can-teach-cmos/

What Taylor Swift Can Teach CMO’s

Taylor Swift has a future career as a Chief Marketing Officer.

The music industry’s leading lady is on a roll. Her latest release “Speak Now” is on fire and she’s leaving her country music competitors, along with every other singer on the market, in the dust. How dominant is she? She sold over 1,000,000 copies of her latest release in the first week alone in the United States. As the New York Times reports, that’s 11 times more than number 2 and more than the next 61 titles combined. Not bad for a 20 year old.

But as good as Taylor Swift the artist is, I’m more impressed with the marketing machine she has become. She’s doing a number of things right, all of which we can and should learn from. When viewed through the lens of the traditional “price, promotion, placement and product” dimensions of marketing accountability, Ms. Swift’s lessons become even more impressive.

Product. Over and over I’ve heard some marketers say things like, “I wish I had Apple’s products. How hard could they be to market?” This of course, is an excuse. No product sells itself. And in any event musical tastes are by definition subjective. So, while I greatly appreciate Taylor Swift’s talents, she is by no means the most gifted singer or guitar player. What Taylor Swift has done brilliantly with her “product” is target it. She clearly knows who her audience is and she speaks directly to them – both in her songs and her marketing efforts. And like all good marketers, she never forgets her base. Continually thanking them for their loyalty while reaching out to others. The lesson: Know your audience, know what they like most about your product, and give them as much of it as you can.

Promotion. Taylor Swift blends the best of old and new school marketing. Yes, she’s a tireless self-promoter but she relentlessly takes advantage of numerous physical and digital channels to get her message out. Whether it’s talk shows, airports, Target or her ubiquitous presence on the social media landscape (she currently has over 4.6 million Twitter followers), Ms. Swift uses all channels to her advantage, rewarding her fans with accessibility, information and approachability. She also adapts – an early participant of MySpace, she later moved to Twitter and Facebook as those social properties grew in relevance for her target audience. The lesson: Transparency, adaptability and presence matter when building a fan base of millions.

Placement and Price. Taylor Swift understands marginal pricing. You can find her latest CD in a number of formats and places – all designed to reach the broadest audience while creating a granular pricing model to generate the most sales possible. Indeed, for $16.99 you can find a customized version of “Speak Now” at Target that includes songs and videos not available in other formats. Only have $9.99 to spend? You can go to Amazon, iTunes or any number of other outlets – but you won’t get the same “Target” version. The lesson: Even the most simple products can be mass customized to broaden their reach and profit potential.

We often look within our own industry for best practices when it comes to marketing, but I think we need to broaden our perspective. There’s a tremendous amount of real innovation happening out there and Taylor Swift is leading the charge in music. Check out what’s she’s up to and you’ll find her marketing sense is as dead-on as her ability to write a hit single.

All we currently know about the Alien prequel is that it’ll be set 35 years before the original 1979 film and will explain the “Space Jockey”(pictured above) that is encountered before Kane is implanted by the Face Hugger. Basically, the film will aim to explain where the aliens came from and how they ended up on LV-426 where they finally meet their match in Ellen Ripley. The lead character is that of “a female Colonial Marine general” and in addition to Portman, Noomi Rapace is also on Scott’s short list. Hathaway could too be up for the role, but that’s purely speculation.

Oscar Host Anne Hathaway on How She’d Tear James Franco’s Arm Off

When we spotted newly appointed Oscar host Anne Hathaway in the crowd at last night’s Gotham Awards at Cipriani Wall Street, we practically had to restrain ourselves from jumping her at her table and demanding answers about the new gig. Had she spoken to co-host James Franco yet? “I haven’t,” she said, “but I can’t say anything about that. I can only say I’m doing it. I can only say I’m excited.” Could she at least tell us what happened when she got the phone call? “I can’t say a word.”

So we turned to her tablemate, Focus Features boss James Schamus, to whom Hathaway presented a lifetime achievement award. Earlier we’d asked Schamus to come up with a bit for Hathaway and 127 Hours's Franco to perform at the Oscars. His suggestion: “I would actually just like to see her rip his arm off. You know, not even break it twice. Just rip it off. Finish the job.”

We both repeated the suggestion to Hathaway. “That’s perfect!” she exclaimed, lighting up so much we almost believe she was considering the idea. “It’ll have them in stitches!” Schamus declared. “Noted!” said Hathaway. “You don’t even have to rip off his real arm, if you don’t want,” we went on. “You could use a fake arm.” Hathaway’s face fell. “Fake arm? No way,” she said. “James is Method.”

A Celebration of Indie Film, Uninhibited

Independent film as salvation: that was the message of the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards on Monday night. Patricia Clarkson, a host, called out the director Lisa Cholodenko (“The Kids Are All Right”) for saving her from a lifetime of playing plucky friends and long-suffering girlfriends and mothers. “She cast me as a German lesbian heroin addict” in “High Art,” Ms. Clarkson said. Anne Hathaway, presenting an award to James Schamus, the chief executive of Focus Features, thanked him for changing her career path via “Brokeback Mountain.” “Don’t get me wrong, I loved playing princesses,” she added, before praising Mr. Schamus for running a studio with spine, although she used a different, rather unprincessy anatomical word. (Mr. Schamus, a professor as well as a film executive, used a dry erase board and a philosophical metaphor during his acceptance speech.)

For 20 years, the Gothams have honored indie chutzpah, and Monday, at Cipriani Wall Street, was no different; the small film “Winter’s Bone” won the top prizes over early Oscar favorites like “Black Swan” and “The Kids Are All Right.” The mood, too, was uninhibited. Ms. Clarkson and her fellow host, Stanley Tucci, suggested a drinking game – drink a shot of vodka every time they said “independent.” They rolled their eyes at their scripted patter, substituting innuendo. As usual, Bill Murray, presenting a lifetime achievement award to his “Get Low” co-star Robert Duvall, brought down the house. “His shadow is a better actor than 70 percent of the people in this room,” Mr. Murray said. “And you know who you are.”

For the lesser-known winners, the evening presented a genuine high point.

“Y’all, I’m from Arkansas, this doesn’t happen to a girl from Arkansas,” Lauren Sweetser, an actress in “Winter’s Bone,” said from the podium, accepting the best ensemble award.

“It’s a huge deal to have work that can’t be on billboards, necessarily, be spoken about, and have clips shown, and have a discussion ensue,” her director, Debra Granik, said backstage afterward, before admitting that she was constitutionally unable to deal with the stress of award shows. “The contraction of the lungs, the viscera, the capillaries – it’s just not a way to live,” she said. Ms. Granik may have to get used to it though: the Bagger has heard gushing affection for “Winter’s Bone” from all corners of the awards universe.

And anyway, there are all kinds of perks to winning. Appraising the Calvin Klein cologne in the victors’ gift bags, Josh Safdie, a writer-director of “Daddy Longlegs,” which won for best breakthrough actor, was gleeful. “You can sell that on eBay!” he said.

Kudos galore to the twosome for their environmentalism, but where the heck is the spice in their relaysh? We know S. and A. aren't into the whole H'wood scene but would a sexy tweet back and forth or playful smooch in public kill them?

Hiking and picking out indie rock songs is nice and all, but they might as well be double-dating on ice cream runs or apple picking outings with BFF Jake Gyllenhaal and his new (gag) GF Taylor Swift.

Yawn.

At least we can thank S. and A. for not forcing their lovey dovey adorableness down our throats Ă  la Gyllenswift (Or is it Jaylor 2.0? Swiftenhall? Are we even going to bother naming 'em?). Just wait until J. and T. release their mix CD of songs that get them all hot 'n' bothered between coffee dates.

Yuck. Oh well, thanks again for helping out the oil-soaked birdies, ya love birds!

Most likely Anne was the one asked to present the award to James Schamus and not Jake; after all, it is curious that Jake who has proven chemistry with Anne (and is currently co-starring in a movie with her) was not asked to co-host the Oscars but James Franco, who hasn't worked with Anne, WAS.

Perhaps....and perhaps Jake didn't show up because he was mad Anne was asked???????

It just makes no sense that Jake doesn't go to things like this.

ITA, especially when he needs new projects.

A good review of L&OD from The New Yorker: :)

Hathaway’s features are so big and bright that they seem to take over her face; she can look like a clown in some shots, and ravishing in others. But she’s not just vivid and generously expressive; she has become, in her last few roles, a high-flying actress who reveals everything that’s inside her characters. Through sheer conviction, she makes the defiant-dying-girl tearjerking clichĂ©s work. And her sex scenes with Gyllenhaal are the most intimate and erotic glimpses of romantic love that we’ve seen in American movies in years. The two of them lounge naked in bed, talking, making love, finessing a scene of Jamie’s impotence that could have been embarrassing but becomes genuinely funny. “Love and Other Drugs” has many weak spots, but what it delivers at its core is as indelible as (and a lot more explicit than) the work of such legendary teams as Clark Gable and Joan Crawford, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.

^^^ Good review? That review is too good! Sorry but "the most intimate and erotic glimpses of romantic love that we’ve seen in American movies in years" and "what it delivers at its core is as indelible as the work of such legendary teams as Clark Gable and Joan Crawford, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn" is very far from the truth.

Isn't that Denby's review? ;)

Anonymous said...

Yes, by David Denby. Why, what did he do?

Anonymous said...

That same David Denby doesn't like “Black Swan”:

The film is often ridiculous, yet there are startlingly beautiful sequences;
...
Off the dance floor, however, “Black Swan” is trashy and incoherent.
...
Portman has been dancing since she was a child, and, aided by some digital finishing, she does well enough in the ballet sequences. That is, she doesn’t make a fool of herself, which, given the possible comparisons, is saying a great deal. But Aronofsky has coaxed her into giving a dolorous performance that’s often on the verge of caricature.

Taylor & Jakey Drink A Lot Of Coffee
Because I need to document every single time Jakey Gyllenhaal and his cuddle partner Taylor Swift order coffee, here they are having a cup at Frothy Monkey in Nashville, TN this morning. You know, after spending most of their night reading fairy tales in silly cat voices and gorging on whoopie pies they made in her Easy Bake Oven, they love nothing more to roll out of her princess canopy bed and talk in depth about their favorite cartoon dog characters over a cup of coffee. Or should I say, Taylor yaps about her favorite dog cartoon characters while Jakey giggles to himself about the name "Frothy Monkey." Yes, Jakey, you're not the only one who thinks it sounds like a dude's nickname for his leaky dick.

And since we're here talking about Jake, somebody used the FACE/OFF Photoshop tool on his EW cover with Anne Hathaway:
I still would, the both of 'em.

LMAO. I should probably feel guilty for laughing at Michael K, but I can't help it. The EW nakey covers were just begging to be photoshopped, lol.

Limpy in Jake's case.

RT's rating of L&OD has gotten better, I see. ;)

A lot of the reviews are more from a film techinical standpoint - evaluations of the script, pacing, whether or not it's like Apatow's work or not, etc. Translation: boring, and all of that is subjective. Ordinary movie-goers don't care about that, they just want to know if the story is good or not, and overall, I thought L&OD was. Some of the reviews have done it a terrible disservice.

New Yorker L&OD Review

What is David Denby drinking? Does he plan to ask Jake out?

Whatever, the review is out there, and lots of people will read it.

I just read that Maroon 5 performed Taylor Swift’s song ‘Mine’ at the CMT awards last night. There is a picture of Taylor with Adam Levine on GettyImages at the awards. Adam is always helping Jake (and Austin) with the closet!

You know, those "discerning" types we hear tell about from New Yawk. ;)

I hope Adam will play Justin Bieber song soon! LOL
Was Jake there?

"Was Jake there?"

No pictures or mentions of him but I wouldn't be surprised if a story appears that he was backstage.

Thanks 8:55 AM! "Jake is very supportive" story wouldn't surprise me. Why that sounds familiar? lmao

Denby moderated the interview with Jake I went to in early October. At the time I remember someone saying they thought he was friends with Naomi.

A-ha, thanks Destiny. But that LAOD review is waaaaaaaaaaaaay over the top.

I knew it.

What about the other good reviews, there must be a connection to Mrs. G. Somehow. We'll find it, dang it!
