Something Magical

Jake Gyllenhaal talks about Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain and magical time in his life.

***

Between courses at the Ravagh Persian Grill in Manhattan (his choice), he pulls out from under his T-shirt the two chains that hang around his neck. Each has a ring at its end - one is a black diamond, the other a pendant of Saint Genesius, patron saint of actors - and he starts rolling them between his fingers. But he almost seems alarmed when I ask about them, as though he hasn't been aware of what he has been doing. A diner from another table comes over.
"Can I say hi to you?" she asks.
"Yes, you can," he says.
"Oh, my gosh," she says. "You're my favorite."
"Oh no," he says. "Oh, don't say that. You say that to everybody."
"No!" she protests. "I love The Brokenback Mountain. I really did love it. I watched it three times."

Brokenback Mountain. Once she recedes, he turns to me and says, "You don't want to know the variations of that title." He tells me how, just the other day, a lawyer asked him how he got into acting at such a young age. "I think at first I was just ambitious," he says. "It was blind ambition. I wanted to be out there. I mean, I remember watching my sister up onstage doing South Pacific when we were kids and going, 'That looks like a fucking lot of fun.'" He debates with himself. "Was it attention? Probably, but I think it was more the magic. It's magic, some of what happens in movies. I mean, people asked me many times through the experience of Brokeback Mountain what that was like. And the best way I can describe it is what we all carry with ourselves from that experience, and why we feel so close. Forget all the awards that come, with people kind of adorning each other - it wasn't about that. There was something magical in that time. We all slept in our trailers out by a trailer park the first month of making that movie. I was sleeping next to Ang's trailer; Ang's trailer was next to Heath and Michelle's trailer - they'd kind of moved in together. And Michael Hausman, the producer, brought his Airstream trailer down. And it was just us, by this river, for a month. And we would walk to set, and we would eat together, and we would all make coffee in the morning, and I would wake up in the morning and there would be Ang Lee doing Tai Chi outside of my trailer, and it was just magical. It was just magical."

Jake and Heath on Brokeback Mountain set
To promote the movie, the cast appeared together on Oprah. For the first half of the show, it was just Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger fending off Winfrey's enthusiasm and curiosity. There is a sheen cast over the movie now - to some extent because of its subject matter but mostly because of Ledger's death - that leaves it and anything connected to it frozen, untouchable. So rewatching the two actors on Oprah, I was surprised to see Gyllenhaal alluding to times that the two of them didn't get on during the filming. Gyllenhaal seems surprised, too, when I mention this, as if he wasn't aware this was something he'd shared. But he remembers. The scene with the two of them by the river, for instance.

"Where Heath's character goes into how his father knew of two guys who lived together and he ended up seeing them killed and dead. I had always read it in a certain way. I heard it in my mind a certain way. And I had worked with these incredible actors like Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon. When I worked with Dustin, he would always do things to me; in between a take, he would stop his lines, and he'd be like, 'You're a wonderful person,' or horrible things sometimes to jar me... getting a different response. And so I decided in this scene to gather the gumption" - this was when Ledger's part of the scene was being filmed and Gyllenhaal was off-camera - "and I don't subscribe to this really, changing lines on an actor, because I don't think I'm Dustin Hoffman, and I don't think I have the ability or the talent to do that to somebody. But I do think that changing intention sometimes on an actor when you're doing a scene when you're not on-camera is really interesting for them. But I did it at one point in this one scene, and I'd always heard it a certain way, so I was almost trying to move the scene to that place for him. He delivered the whole thing very, very straight, and he could feel me trying to do that, and I remember him getting really upset with me. And I remember him turning to Ang at the end of it and going, 'If he wants to tell me what to do, have him tell you'... We had these kind of exchanges, you know. But ultimately, the way I look at it was I was wrong, because he was brilliant. But at the same time I think, "Well, if I hadn't, would it have gone a certain way?" We balanced each other out. When I think about these things that happened then, we were very much alive in that movie. We were really living that movie. Not literally, but you think about those times in your life..."

One thing Gyllenhaal would do - feeding off the way Ledger had chosen to play the part of Ennis quietly, his teeth clenched - was to ask him in character, "What? What'd you say?" "Stupid me," Gyllenhaal comments now.

Did Heath never do anything that annoyed you?

"No. I always admired Heath. I always was kind of enamored by him, you know. I mean, yeah, sometimes it was hard to sit with him. He moved... He was a mover."

People have since suggested that he was really, really troubled by having to do all that promotion and campaigning. Was that your sense?

"Yeah. He was very sensitive. He didn't always really have a sense of performance in his everyday life. He was who he was. I think actors very often, they know how to present something, and that's part of their job. I think he was just really sensitive. We often used to do a lot of things together, because people were very interested in him and I think we felt safe together."

For example, he says that when he and Ledger had to introduce Ang Lee at the Directors Guild awards, Ledger refused point-blank to say anything jokey about Lee, as might have been expected at such an event. Their introduction was consequently so serious and earnest, says Gyllenhaal, that when Lee came up to the stage, he told them, "That was so gay."

Still, he also remembers how much they'd be laughing backstage at events: "For such a serious actor as Heath was, he was crazy funny. Dark funny, but funny." Out front, they came to be sobered by people's reactions, as they realized that the movie was bigger than all of them, bigger than they'd realized. Gyllenhaal tells me a strange thing about the filming, an experience he'd just rhapsodized about as so magical: "In retrospect, it just was a painful process." As though there's no reason why both memories should not be equally true. "I don't think any of us can watch it to this day," he says. "I remember talking to Michelle very recently and her being like, 'I didn't know if it was any good or not.'"

Afterward, he and Ledger stayed in close touch. "We'd talk a few times a month. I mean, he was a friend. He was like my creative partner." The news of Ledger's death came while Gyllenhaal was filming Brothers.

Could you make any sense of it at all?

A lengthy pause. "I don't really like talking about it. That period of time was... It was difficult."

What effect do you think it had on you?

"Even when we did Brokeback and stuff, it was like my work was the only thing that mattered to me. It was like I could only understand or define myself through doing that. Life, I didn't totally understand. And I think I was afraid of life. And I had success in my work, enough success that you could keep going back there. But after that happened... I think I recognized that it was work. And I recognized that this is for real."

"This" being life?

"It's for real."

What were you scared of?

"It seems to me that there are some people who go, 'All right, I'm grabbing the bull by the horns. Let's do this...,' and there are some people who it takes a while to figure out. It's an everyday struggle to be able to go, 'I'm going to follow my own instincts - I'm going to try and hear my own heart regardless...' We're getting pretty deep here. I mean, there are things that I want in my life. You can hide in your work, I guess I'm saying, or you can be alive and free and live in your work. You can pretend the people that you're going to work with for however many months are going to be the family that's going to be forever. But the truth is, they're not. And no matter what relationships you make along the way - which have been occasionally really, really influential in my life – ultimately I choose all the mishegoss, and all the complication and confusions of life, which takes courage and patience to sift through. Over the temporary moment of 'Oh, I'm comforted in the womb of this family.' I choose the other. I hate to say this, but - "Gyllenhaal smiles - "it's time to jump."

***

There is a famous scene in Brokeback Mountain where Ledger's and Gyllenhaal's characters jump together off a cliff into a river, both of them naked.

In reality, Ledger made the jump but Gyllenhaal did not. Originally the leap was to have been from a lower ledge, but Ledger wanted to go from right at the top. They were told how careful they would have to be, falling from that height, because they might hit the river's shallow bottom, and they were also warned of the hazards presented by the glacial water. Gyllenhaal realized he wasn't so sure about it. He had just been cast in Jarhead, and that shoot was starting soon. He knew that if he injured himself, he would lose the part. And he was comforted by a precedent: he remembered a story he had heard in his youth, about how Paul Newman, a family friend, hadn't actually made the leap in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He decided to let a stand-in jump in his stead.

Brokeback Mountain shirts
I ask him whether Ledger didn't, after all they had been through together, say to him, "You're wimping out on this?"

"It's interesting - he never did say that. I would have loved for him to have said that."

Would it have made you feel bad?

"Maybe. Yeah, probably. But I was actually really, really proud of myself that I didn't do it. For me, it was a great triumph. You know, there's a pressure that people put on themselves to not trust their instincts. You know, show the stunt guys I can do it, prove it to this person, prove it to that person. Who do I need to prove it to? And Heath didn't do it for any of those reasons - he did it because he wanted to jump."

Do you at all regret not doing it now?

"Yeah. But that's me now."

Its not Jake's ego that makes him behave the way he does. It's his neediness. For having had such loving parents its odd that he is so needy. Maybe he was born that way, just like he was born gay. Or maybe they were so busy with their careers he had to fight for their attention. Reese did the wrong thing by bringing that up in the rags as one of his faults, but she was right about him being needy. We've all seen it for years. Its part of what makes us love him so much.

What I'm talking about is hard evidence i.e. pictures or reliable sightings. Why no such thing exists when there were lots of Jake with other male friends, including the one who was his widely speculated boyfriend?

Any publicist worth his or her salt would have discouraged Heath and Jake from being papped together after BBM. Whether they listened or not, didn't hang out at all, or saw each other in private, who knows. There wasn't much time in any case. After 2005 Heath was in Venice, Australia, NYC, Chicago, London, etc plus had a baby. Heath would also never dress up in fancy cycling skins and ride around LA in front of hordes of photographers, like Lance and Mathew. Jake's other friends - Chris, Austin - were much less employed than Heath and could come see Jake at his bidding. Heath wasn't exactly bidable.

From a business standpoint, the rationale for delinking Heath and Jake after BBM is the same as the rationale for delinking Leo D and Kate after Titanic (or any charismatic movie couple). Some people, even though they know better, start to see them as a "set" in the real world. Fans write reams of fanfic. The press links the couple in general articles on the movie. All this creates risk of typecasting/too strong association with each other and one role. An agent wants casting agents and directors to view their actor without bias - even an Oscar can be a neg if the actor is seen as embodying just that one role they won for.

Once BBM took off, publicists would have done their best to have Heath and Jake appear in different media - to stretch the promotion as far as possible and to keep their brand identities differentiated. They would also have wanted them apart to avoid stoking gay rumors. There was a lot of joking about them as gay cowboys and lovers after the movie came out. A publicist trying to turn his or her client into an A-list leading man wants to squash those jokes and keep the focus on the acting.

Heath was a dog.

He seeemed to cheat on her left and right. Either she was dumb as fuck not to notice or she endured. IMO she's a spineless little idiot.
Hopefully her next guy will treat her a tad better and be good to her daughter. The next one the list will probably be Gosling for a couple years. Just a hunch.

I agree with what you're saying, but I don't agree that there wasn't much time.

I believe they had contact and saw each other, but in private. The likely reason for that was, IMHO, that particularly Heath was paranoid that people could think they were more than friends.

I read the whole VF article and Gilliam said that it made her bitter because Heath was rarely at home. And he said that Heath realized they don't fit during 2006 award season. Because Gillim is a respected director and a friend of Heath's I tend to believe him.

And cheating and drug rumors during his relationship with Michelle were persistant.

Michelle was probably too in love with him to think straight. It's never good to lose your head when in a relationship especially with a man like Heath, but it happens and I don't think we should be so hard on her. Heath seemed to be a difficult guy, still people were naturally drawn to him.

Gilliam may well be telling the truth, but he's not acting like a true "friend," imo. Why anyone's "friend" would spill personal information about them, especially after they've died, is a mystery to me. Heath seemed to be a very private person, so for Gilliam to talk so openly about such private matters is not very admirable behavior.

Hey, even Pinto gave in and gave the fans some pictures together last week.

I think it had more to do with Heath's dislike of the paps and Jake's campaign to be STRAIGHT. Jake has become alsmost pathological in his avoidance of anything having even the slightest whiff of gay.

Jake's campaign to be STRAIGHT. Jake has become alsmost pathological in his avoidance of anything having even the slightest whiff of gay.

Not true. Jake’s straight campaign started in October 2007 with the Reekefest. When Heath was alive, between BBM and Reeke, Jake was photographed numerous times with male friends: Chris, Austin (his rumored boyfriend), McBongo and Lance (lots of homoerotic pics), RDJ, Jamie Fox, Matt Katz and others.

Sorry, 'Jake and Heath didn’t hang out together in public because Jake wanted a straight image' doesn’t make sense.

Reeke started in November of 2006, with that story about Reese's friends speculating about her hooking up with him when they start filming Rendition. Then we got the stories about Jake getting her a bike that Christmas, the stupid pictures of her with the fake pregnant stomach, the sightings of them getting take-out, and all that nonsense with them following each other in different cars in the summer of 2007.

Most of the photos you're referring to were from 2006. Jake was clearly upset at being caught at Borders, once they realized it. The other biking photos of J&A were, I think, to appease Jake when he was looking so miserable and there was so much chatter about how he was seen with nobody but Reese, and it was clearly hurting his image that he was never seen even with family, so they let up a bit on the all Reeke/only Reeke 24/7.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, 'Jake and Heath didn’t hang out together in public because Jake wanted a straight image' doesn’t make sense.

I think it was primarily Heath who had problems regarding possible rumors about them. I think Jake liked and knew Heath and went along with it, meaning they kept the connection out of the public eye. And I do not doubt Jake's words that they were friends and in touch.

Anonymous said...

If they really had no problem with all those other people we would have gotten more Jake and Austin photos, or more photos of Jake with guys other than the one set with Chris.

The bodyguard, Peter and people from the movies he's shot/promoted are the only men he has been allowed to be papped with in months.

Pathological.

Jakey G’s big London event
Jake Gyllenhaal was photographed in London last night. He actually looks kind of not bad in those pants and really really hot everywhere else. Jakey of course is now heavily promoting Prince of Persia which drops on May 28th. On Sunday he’s participating in a major Disney press stunt for the film – something about 5 time zones premiering simultaneously from Australia to Asia to Europe to Central America like the “Sands of Time”, get it? Jakey and the other stars of the film will be stationed in London but beamed via satellite everywhere else, I guess? Am confused already. Time Travel was never my best subject. Click here for more information.

Jakey’s an action hero now. He’s really making it hard for me not to put him on the Freebie Five. But he’s a Mouse Man now. This makes me nervous.

Country Star Chely Wright Comes Out
The Singer Tells the Truth About Being Gay, Whatever the Risk to Her Career
By John Berman and Hanna Siegel
May 5, 2010

By her own admission, Chely Wright was a liar.

"It was a matter of life or death for me emotionally, spiritually, physically," she says. "It became time for me."
She was a country music singer, with a Nashville pedigree and No. 1 hits, and a liar -- until today.

"My truth is I'm gay," she says. "My truth is that I hid my homosexuality for my entire career."

From the time she was a young Kansan trying to sing her way to stardom, Wright, 39, didn't think country music could handle her secret.

"I lied every day, I lied to myself for a long time and then when I stopped lying to myself, I still did a lot of lying to my fans and there are a lot of lies to my family and to my friends," she says.

"Country music is not cool with an openly gay country music artist," she says. "I read liner notes as if they were bedtime stories; nowhere in there did I read anything about a homosexual."

So she tried to wish it away, inventing a heartbreaking prayer, that she would repeat three times a day for years: "Just take it away, please, please, please God, don't let me be gay."

She carried her secret to Nashville where she was recognized as top new female vocalist
There, she scored a No. 1 hit with "Single White Female" and was named one of People magazine's 50 most beautiful people, all while engaged in secret relationships with women.

"I can't tell you how many times people have tried to become friendly with me in my career and I've had so many of my contemporaries say you know people think you're cold, people think you're hard to get to know, they think you're a snot," she says.

"I would rather they think I'm stuck up, a snot, a shallow person who is not interested in their story than them think, you know, that I think she's gay, that was a better option for me at that time."
She tried dating men, including country sensation Brad Paisley, who didn't know the truth.

"I made these deals in my head," she says. "If I'm going to go without real love, I'm going to find companionship with someone I can enjoy and that I like, that's my best friend and Brad and I were good friends.

"We enjoyed one another. ... He's wickedly funny. I liked how he lived his life and we were compatible in many ways."

Except for one.

"I'm gay and he's not," she says.

The pressure of the double life became overwhelming and Wright contemplated suicide.

"When I found myself in my darkest place, it really seemed like my only answer to me and it really seemed like the only answer because, earlier, I had very masterfully created a life, what seemed to be a very successful life in which I can no longer exist," she says.

"I was lonely and no one knew me, not even my best friends knew me. I had painted myself in this corner. ... I couldn't for the life of me sit down and work out a plan to make the pieces of my life go together."

So she decided the truth was the only way.

Wright Not Worried About Losing Fans
"I know the sin for me is to lie and I've been lying my whole life," she says.

She has a new album and a new book, "Like Me," that she hopes will help young men and women who might be gay or lesbian.

"I feel I have a responsibility to stand up because I can," she says, even at the risk of losing fans. "I know I will be OK."

He seeemed to cheat on her left and right. Either she was dumb as fuck not to notice or she endured.

You are exaggerating. There is no evidence of him sleeping around on Michelle. Heath wasn't happy in the relationship, but no credible source who knew him or Michelle has ever said they broke up over cheating by Heath.

Heath was a constant target of jealousy and malicious gossip. It goes on to this day (see quote above). He couldn't help an old lady across the street without someone claiming that he was banging her.

That article was short, but not short on b.s. What's funny is that it also says Reese "dated" Jake for "one year," lol. So now they're trying to downplay how long they fake dated. Although I imagine that 2-1/2 years felt like 10.

IA. IMO celebs basically know when they are being followed by paps or the places where paps are. Borders was an accident, because the pap was there outside waiting for his fiancee to buy a book on wedding planning she had decided at the last minute to get. Normally he wouldn't have made the late night impromptu trip but since they were in love and he didn't want to fight... LOL and he ends up seeing Jake and Austin !!

CNN Does Gay Surrogacy in "Gary and Tony Have a Baby" said...

Kevin and Scotty are doing it on Brothers & Sisters while Ricky Martin did it in real life. Now CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien is doing an In America documentary on the phenomenon of gay men having babies via surrogacy.

Titled Gary & Tony Have a Baby and airing in June, the two-hour special follows Gary and Tony, two life-long gay activists, on their quest to have a biological child of their own. A statement from CNN describes the special this way:

Unable to legally marry in the U.S., [Gary and Tony] travel to Canada, get married, and spend thousands on an arduous journey toward parenthood via surrogacy and in vitro fertilization. ... Though Gary and Tony had hoped for a happy extended family, they discover instead ambivalence about same-sex marriage. With court battles, and struggles against their hometown community – can these men achieve a life as mainstream as their parents?

Both curious to learn a little more the special, as well as a little leery given CNN's last look at a gay topic, AfterElton.com spoke with O'Brien to get more details.

AfterElton.com: How did the special come to be?
Soledad O'Brien: For In America, I'm very interested in telling stories that don't get a lot of play, and don't get told very often. That fly a little bit under the radar. I was noticing at my daughter's school and in the places around the city, the number of male couples having children. I was interested and noticed a trend. Then I ran into a couple my producer knew well who were thinking of having a baby. I thought it would be very interesting to follow the process financially of finding a donor, and the emotional processes and psychological journey. In some ways, the most radical thing to do [for a gay couple] is to circle around and have a bigger family unit.

AE: What more can you tell me about Gary and Tony?
SO: They've been together for twenty years. They are two guys who have described themselves by saying they grew up when they found each other and they transitioned from young men to grownups together. Their marriage was in Canada in 2005 and while they were happy with that, they eventually decided that they really wanted to have a baby. They loved each other so much that they decided the next natural step was to become a bigger family.

AE: What's the structure of the special?
SO: We tell the story of how they come to this place. We go with them every step of the way as the implantation happens, as they are navigating all the drama that comes along with having a surrogate. There is a lot of legal maneuvering. By the time we meet them they have the egg donor and surrogate.

AE: The description of the show referred to the guys having problems with their community and encountering "ambivalence." Can you elaborate?
SO: What has been interesting to watch is that the process isn't always about you, but is sometimes about your family. Not so much what will your family members think, but what will their friends think? What will the surrogate's friends think? In Gary's home town [in central Pennsylvania], the church was very uncomfortable with him. They talked about the evil that is homosexuality.

How is that going to make them feel? For our purposes, what it spurs in their head is really interesting. It takes them back to their childhood, back to not being accepted as a gay kid.

AE: Is this just their story or is "the other side" represented here?
SO: We tell their story very organically. They are activists and there are times when their activism brings them into contact with those that oppose them and we show that. But we don't go out and solicit opinions from those against gay parents.

Here's Chely Wright's Coming Out Interview. It's Actually Pretty Remarkable said...

So, here's the coming out story you stopped caring about by Monday. But, even though you already knew Chely Wright was a gay, you should still watch this (and the other soon-to-come) interviews with her, because her story is pretty great.

Yes, she is a famous (in some circles) person, so her story will get more attention that your own little coming out tale. But what's important to note is her personal narrative is no more important than your own — and thus just as relatable as what you went through. Minus the whole "being in the spotlight" thing, where her coming out doesn't just face criticism from friends and family, but perfect strangers on a national scale.

Wright says at one point she had a 9mm in her mouth, so depressed over living a "sercret life." She "saw no way to for [being gay and a country star] to coexist." That's pretty terrible, and if just one little girl or boy — or even those oft neglected closeted adults! — can find some hope in her story, then the public spectacle over her acknowledgment was all worthwhile.

IA Jake looks guarded in the pic with Adam, however his body language says he was receptive to him; Jake has his upper leg crossed towards Adam, his whole body is leaning towards Adam, and his head is tilted towards him too. Even his clasped hands are held more on his right side of his body than in the center or away from Adam. Also the way he's sitting, facing forward and resting his back fully on the sofa cushion while Adam is turning towards his left, not seated all the way back, tilted forward and his left leg open and crossed over, implies a little HW pecking order game going on. LOL Jake is definitely a power bottom.

IMO it's more likely Jake was guarded from/because of whoever was taking the pic, not from Adam.

Besides the significance of the crossed legs, Jake looks like he's about as close to the edge (ready to flee) as that sofa will allow. If Adam wasn't such a nice guy, he might've scooched a little closer to see if Jake fell on the floor, trying to escape. LOL. Man, oh man, has that man ever changed from the Jake of old. At least, with regard to his public persona.

Body Language 101 reveals that crossed legs can disclose many things about the state of someone's mind.

Jake:
Essentially, the legs indicate what the mind wants to do. Crossed legs, therefore, often indicate--anyone care to guess? A closed mind.

If someone's legs are crossed, they're closing themselves off to the person they're speaking to. They're not comfortable with the person, and may be fearing attack on a very basic primordial level. Interestingly enough, getting the person to uncross their legs will almost invariably get them to open their mind up a bit more.

Adam:
The figure-four cross occurs where one ankle is placed on top of the other legs' knee, with top leg's knee pointing sideways. This can be a surreptitious crotch display, and is more common amongst men as it invites attention. Sorta of like, "Look at me, aren't I pretty, Jake?" or conversely is challenging the other male, like "Come out, come out, whereever you are, Jakey."

Too funny.

Why is Jake holding his nose?

Because he's lying?

Body Language of Lies:
• Physical expression will be limited and stiff, with few arm and hand movements. Hand, arm and leg movement are toward their own body the liar takes up less space.
• A person who is lying to you will avoid making eye contact.
• Hands touching their face, throat & mouth. Touching or scratching the nose or behind their ear. Not likely to touch his chest/heart with an open hand.

Jake Gyllenhaal prepared for Persia franchise said...

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal says he wants to be taken "a little less seriously" as an actor, and would love the Prince of Persia to become a franchise.

The 29-year-old, known for dramatic roles including Brokeback Mountain, said recognition as the Disney blockbuster hero would be an "honour". "I think about kids saying 'you're the Prince of Persia!' That I wouldn't mind being locked into," he said.

Based on a video game, the fantasy film is released in the UK on 21 May. Stars of the film, including Gyllenhaal and British actress Gemma Arterton, have also signed a deal for a sequel, but producers have stressed that the success of the initial outing - The Sands of Time - will secure a second movie.

The film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who is behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise starring Johnny Depp. Gyllenhaal, who shot to fame in indie hit Donnie Darko, said he wants to be taken "a little less seriously" as an actor.

"I wanted to fulfil the dreams of those movies I loved watching, like Robin Hood with Errol Flynn," he added of his new swashbuckling role. "Who knows in two or three years time what other weird thing I'll do?" said the star.

Mike Newell, who directed Prince of Persia, admitted that he was initially unsure about Gyllenhaal in the role of an action hero. But the UK film-maker added that the actor "worked his arse off" to make it work, including intensive physical training and cultivating a British accent. "He was wonderful and absolutely took it on," said Newell, whose other credits include the fourth Harry Potter film and Four Weddings and A Funeral.

The film's UK premiere is due to take place at London's Westfield shopping complex on Sunday.

Forbes/ONTD said...

Forbes: 15 Stars On The Edge This Summer
Dorothy Pomerantz, 05.04.10, 06:00 PM EDT
Summer brings big, expensive movies and big stakes in Hollywood. These stars have the most to gain or lose this season.

Summer means action, comic books, sequels, popcorn and big bucks at the box office. The 100 movies released last summer earned a collective $4.3 billion, according to Box Office Mojo. Can this summer top that? Here are the stars poised to gain or lose the most this season.

1. Robert Downey Jr.
Iron Man 2
The first Iron Man took Hollywood by surprise with its mix of rapid-fire dialogue and hard-hitting action. Audiences loved the film, spending $585 million on tickets at the box office. The sequel looks like it will live up to the original--it's already earned $100 million abroad.

2. Tom Cruise
Knight and Day
Cruise hasn't had a major hit since 2006's Mission: Impossible III. The star needs Knight and Day to bring in the crowds this summer. The actor earned some good buzz with his comedic cameo in 2008's Tropic Thunder. Knight and Day (co-starring Cameron Diaz) could be just the mix of comedy and action Cruise needs for a comeback.

3. Angelina Jolie
Salt
In her career, Jolie has vacillated between action flicks like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Oscar bait like The Changeling. It seems the actress might be settling into the action life. She follows up the 2008 shoot-'em-up hit Wanted with this summer's Salt, about a rogue CIA agent. Hollywood will be watching the box office returns to see if they prove she's an action star worthy of $15 million a film.

4. Russell Crowe
Robin Hood
Crowe has had a rough couple of years. His last two films, State of Play and Body of Lies, disappointed at the box office. So there's a lot riding on Robin Hood, Universal's new take on the old story. With Cate Blanchett along for the ride as Marion, the film is sure to focus as much on acting as on bow and arrow action.

5. Julia Roberts
Eat Pray Love
"Chick flicks" like The Proposal, Sex and The City and Mamma Mia have performed well over the past few summers, so hopes are high for Roberts' newest film, Eat Pray Love, based on the best-selling book by Elizabeth Gilbert. Roberts could use a hit. Her last big box office winner (aside from the Ocean's films) was 2001's America's Sweethearts.

6. Sarah Jessica Parker
Sex and the City 2
The first Sex and the City film was a smash hit, earning $415 million at the box office on an estimated budget of $65 million. The filmmakers are taking a risk with the sequel by taking Carrie and her friends out of Manhattan. If the movie's a hit, though, it will mean big bucks for Parker, who is also a producer on the film.

7. Jake Gyllenhaal
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Gyllenhaal is best known for his work in serious movies like Donnie Darko, Zodiac and Brokeback Mountain. It's quite a departure for the actor to take on the lead role in Prince of Persia, which is based on a videogame. If the film is a hit, Gyllenhaal might have found a second career for himself playing action heroes.

8. Leonardo DiCaprio
Inception
Leo finally had a big hit with Shutter Island. He needs that streak to continue if he's going to hold onto his reputation as an actor worth $20 million for serious adult movies. Few films have been as shrouded in secrecy as Christopher Nolan's Inception, which hits theaters July 16. It has something to do with technology and dreams, but that's as much as anyone knows. Considering Nolan was the man behind The Dark Knight, Inception could be a huge hit.

9. Jennifer Aniston
The Switch
Aniston has had a run of bad luck at the box office lately. Love Happens and The Bounty Hunter both bombed despite the presence of strong costars like Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart. She needs The Switch to do well to maintain her reputation as a solid romantic comedy star.

10. Will Ferrell
The Other Guys
Ferrell starred in one of the biggest bombs of 2009 last summer: Land of the Lost, which earned only $68 million on an estimated budget of $100 million. Ferrell needs The Other Guys to be a hit. It helps that the cop movie has a lower budget than the effects-heavy Land of the Lost.

11. Matt Damon
The Adjustment Bureau
Thanks to the Bourne movies, Damon has starred in some top-earning films. But he's also been in his share of duds. Recent movies like The Informant, Green Zone and Invictus have disappointed at the box office. The Adjustment Bureau is the directorial debut of writer George Nolfi, who penned The Bourne Ultimatum.

12. Steve Carell
Dinner for Schmucks and Despicable Me
If Carell leaves The Office next year, as rumored, he'll have a burgeoning career as a movie star--his films this summer could either add to his momentum or break it. His most recent film, Date Night, has had a respectable run, earning $109 million at the box office worldwide. Dinner for Schmucks, co-starring Paul Rudd, is getting good buzz, as is the animated Despicable Me.

13. Mark Wahlberg
The Other Guys
Wahlberg is one of those dependable actors who can go between action films like Max Payne and serious dramas like The Lovely Bones with no problem. But until recently he's stayed away from comedies. His shirtless performance in the comedy Date Night has audiences excited for the upcoming film The Other Guys, which stars Wahlberg and Will Ferrell.

14. Cameron Diaz
Shrek 4 and Knight and Day
The Shrek movies (which co-star Diaz as Princess Fiona) have been some of the biggest earners of all time, bringing in a total $2.2 million (EDIT: should read $2.2 billion) at the global box office so far. The fourth and final film is sure to be a box-office winner, especially because it's being shown in 3-D. Audiences will be able to see Diaz in Knight and Day, which co-stars Tom Cruise

15. Adam Sandler
Grown Ups
For his latest movie, Sandler brought along fellow Saturday Night Live veterans like Chris Rock and Rob Schneider for a big family ensemble comedy. The presence of Kevin James (hot off of last year's Paul Blart: Mall Cop) could make the film a summer hit.

^^Jesus Christ, even if he were straight, why would he be obsessed with a phoney ditz? I have girlfriends who are prettier, more intelligent and nicer than that midget. I'm sure some bloke like Jake is able to find some decent woman rather than pine over that thing. How ridic.

All that being said, I don't think he is straight and all this is BS.

Of course it's bullshit, the whole Reeke PR project was bullshit.

Notice that the PopEater b.s. used the always popular "a friend of Jake's" saying that Reese was the "love of his life" but the Faded Youth blog takes that quote and changes "a friend of Jake's" to the always popular "a source" - and then adds: "For his part, a pal of Jake’s says he’s not obsessed at all and rather happily being single." Gosh, these sources, friends and pals should all get together and have a party!

I wonder what the next version will be and where that will pop up :)

Paquita La Del Barrio Begs Media To Leave Her Alone said...

Mexican Cantina Queen rounded members of the media on 5 de Mayo to beg them to please leave her alone for the comments she made about gay adoption in Mexico a few weeks ago. The singer said that she'd rather see a kid die than to see him be adopted by a gay couple. She had pronounced herself against gay marriage a few days before that. It seems that since she has not been able to be lucky in love she wanted everyone to feel her pain and sing the blues forever.

All kidding aside, I feel bad for Paca. And although I am all for freedom of speech, I am not for careless speech. Why would you say something that would hurt your career so bad? Especially when a big part of her core base is composed of gay people who identify with the singer's struggle in life and her lyrics. She herself has said that her closest friends are gay so all this really makes no sense at all.

Well, according to what he said in the BBC article at 12:58, he would love for PoP to become a franchise.

Honestly, I wouldn't be that surprised to see Adam Lambert on stage with nothing but glasses and a giant drum codpiece, but for now I mean he's an energizer bunny chugging along to a different spot around the globe every day. Whatever he decides to display next on stage, I'm in love with his current look, this Elvis meets Bowie meets goth ensemble, although there is no real comparison. It's just Adam.

Lambert has been traveling all over to promote his new album, most recently to Finland where he was a judge on X-Factor. Yesterday he went back to London where he attended Attitude Magazine's Sweet Sixteen Party and hung out with Jedward. "London!" Lambert tweeted, "Good to be back! Even if it's only for a day..."

" Actor Jake Gyllenhaal says he wants to be taken "a little less seriously" as an actor, and would love the Prince of Persia to become a franchise. "

There's no reason for him to worry about this. After Reeke started, the diminuition in status started to happen.
