Jake Gyllenhaal in Source Code
Darkness.

A SOUND slowly builds: the rhythmic rocking of a TRAIN'S WHEELS over RAILROAD TRACKS...

INT. HIGH SPEED TRAIN - MORNING

COLTER jolts awake. Sunlight hits his face.

He blinks. A stunned beat. He's disoriented.

Slowly he turns his head to one side...

PASSENGERS. Filling most of the seats. Office workers on their morning commute into a city.

Turning the other way, he‘s confronted with a window. Trees flash by, splitting the rising sunlight into a hypnotic strobe pattern.

Colter looks to be thirty years old. A military buzz cut. A disciplined physique, lean and spare, almost gaunt. Skin burnished by years of desert sandstorms and equatorial sun. His expression, prematurely aged by combat, is perpetually wary, sometimes predatory, accustomed to trouble.

Despite his military bearing, Colter wears a button down shirt and navy sports coat. On his wrist is a digital watch. It reads 7:40 a.m.

He swallows. A strange, creeping panic.

He has no idea where he is.

Oooooh I know! Let's all band together and start hating on Rachel McAdams all over the internet because she had he AUDACITY to present an award with Jake!!1@#1!!! Come on, who's on board?! I know we can make it happen!!!

Huh? Get a grip. You sound like a fool. No one said anything even close to hating on Rachel. Pointing out that PR can arrange who presents together isn't hating on anyone. Sheesh.

I think Rachel felt bad for Jake when Nate asked that question but to be fair Nate felt bad too after he asked it. Jake took it well because he knows Nate meant no harm.

Real men don't hug

11:13 AM, thanks for posting that. It's incredibly disappointing that Anthony Mackie would actually have to defend himself for showing affection to his costar. That he may now feel inhibited from hugging another man like that again. That kind of subtle homophobia is a cancer in our world.

Anonymous said...

Well that would work until her publicist tells her to break it off with Jake for her career, like what happened with Ryan G.

You can’t control the questions you’re asked on live TV. Jake should've known this. Does he really think no one will ask him about Heath ever again?

Anonymous said...

At least, please, tell me that Jake didn't go all "Heath who?" I still have some respect for our Toothy....

Anonymous said...

It would not have been posted if anyone had a problem with it. I think it was fine to ask. Maybe it was an uncomfortable question, but Nate was obviously sincere in asking. Reeke was all kinds of wrong, bearding, and distancing from Heath.

Anonymous said...

I still can't believe Jake just left Rachel in the dust on the stage to fiddle around with her dress. Thank goodness for the usher guy.

It was like at prom, you dish the girl for the guys with the booze except the booze was the Oscar.

He did the same thing on the Nate video, leaving her behind to fiddle with the dress but I think he was just trying to make off with her purse.

Anonymous said...

Reeke wasn't good for Jake's career either. It's like night and day now. :)

Anonymous said...

"At least, please, tell me that Jake didn't go all "Heath who?" I still have some respect for our Toothy...."

He was in shock, sort of like the guy who won the Oscar that he presented. It took him awhile to gather his thoughts. The question came out of nowhere since they were joking it up during the interview.

Anonymous said...

8:26 Go to Oprah.com and watch it there.

It was almost like he blanched; he was a little flustered, but that's understandable. It obviously was a painful question. I felt a little bit like I shouldn't have been watching such a personal response. But Nate was sincere in asking. But Heath deserves to be honored and remembered too.

Anonymous said...

Did you see that after Nate was done with the questions Jake couldn’t get away fast enough? He left both Rachel and Nate there.

Anonymous said...

Jake probably feared more awkward journalist questions and wanted out.

I bet many of Heath's family and friends are pissed at Heath for being so reckless with these pills. He sort of flushed his life down the toilet. Such a promising career, a healthy child and women loved him. What a waste.

Despite the awkward part about Heath, Jake was a great interviewee. Very charismatic and handsome. :)

Anonymous said...

Yes, but he's mostly shown from behind his left ear.

Anonymous said...

We don't know why Heath started to take so many pills. Maybe he did it for years, maybe it was just that one damn time. It was an accident and we will never know all the elements for that tragedy.
I guess their family blame themselves more than him :´(

Anonymous said...

Seeing Jake's discomfort and shock at the question made me certain his silence is deliberate. The Heath topic will continue to be a no-no in the interviews his handlers can control because Jake obviously doesn't want to talk about it.

The Best Dressed Award: Jake Gyllenhaal

It takes a lot of work to make hundreds of millions of people think the clothes you're wearing don't really matter. But this is the Oscars, and they do, and Gyllenhaal matched his Burberry tuxedo — a real piece of work itself — with a smart bow tie, simple pocket square, and one helluva haircut. The man looked... comfortable. Which is the hardest — and most important — part about wearing formalwear when you're a man, and which is why Gyllenhaal nailed it.

I think that question was the continuation of damage control from the misguided decision of Reeke, i.e. whose effin' bright idea was that. Jake's career is on the upswing and he is back to being the talented and charismatic guy we love. I think TPTB or himself or whomever realize what a mistake it was to distance himself from Heath, and I think you will see more such questions, albeit gentle and not attacking way. He may realize it was a mistake to have not said anything. I really don't think that video would have been allowed if it were a forbidden topic. It's about time.

Anonymous said...

I think Rachel felt bad for Jake when Nate asked that question but to be fair Nate felt bad too after he asked it

Nate would have known the question was risky, but he wanted to get a good quote reaction for his segment. I think he felt bad after he asked it because something in Jake's physical response was too raw. Nate had drawn out emotion, as intended, but maybe not the kind that could be aired as an Oprah moment.

I don't see why Jake should be so awkward 2 years later, even if caught off guard.

Anonymous said...

That question was most definitely NOT damage control. Did you even watch the interview? Jake is caught off guard big time. He doesn't even manage to give an eloquent answer.

Anonymous said...

I feel sorry for all Jake/Heath shippers. Jake/Austin, James Franco, Anne, Michelle, Rachel...there is a slight chance (maybe he's even really dating Austin), but H/J will never happen. :(

Anonymous said...

Blowing everyone at Esquire really paid off!

Nah. He looked really good that night. It's deserved. ;)

Anonymous said...

Yes I watched the interview. Why, after so much time, would it be such a "journalist" question. It was a fair question, it would not be answered or allowed if it were not, it's damage control, QED.

Anonymous said...

It's possible he didn't strictly forbid any Heath questions this time, maybe he did in the past though?

Anonymous said...

Whose come was Jake chewing?!

Anonymous said...

Nobody cares if Heath or Jake "happened" you fool. I thought Jake gave a fine answer. Obviously, Nate wasn't instructed about what he could and couldn't ask, which is a form of damage control. I would think the so-called money question would be who Jake is dating, not anything about Heath after all this time. Nate was sincere in asking.

Anonymous said...

If it had been damage control Jake’s reaction would’ve been different. He was not expecting it, that much is clear.

Anonymous said...

Nate cares more about Heath than who Jake is dating, which makes him aces in my books.

Anonymous said...

Will this put to rest that Jake stayed quiet because he didn't care? Seems like he did and still does.

Well to me it was always clear that they had pretty strong feelings for each other. And I never believed he was whatevs regarding his death. Although I didn't really like all the Reeke photo ops at the time. I never was a fan of Reeke to begin with, but that made me dislike them "together". Good Reeke is over for good.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

He still was annoyed, uncomfortable.

Not only he, Michelle is too. I watched an interview about "Wendy and Lucy" with her and Peter Travers form Rolling Stone and when he brought up Heath she was pissed, her face went red. But she didn't say a word about him until the topic was W & L again. I think she didn't want his work to overshadow hers.

Anonymous said...

The part with the question about Heath was not aired on the Oprah show, just that with the dress. I wonder why since both Jake and Heath were on the show a few years ago.

Anonymous said...

Michelle was NOT pissed at Peter Travers when he asked her that very thoughtful question about Heath (I saw the interview)--it was a question that she knew, he as a respected journalist needed to ask (and he wasn't being exploitative about Heath at all-clearly he was a fan) but talking about Heath is painful. Good god--I'm upset even writing about him and I didn't even know him like those two--I just liked his acting!!

I look at it this way: all Jake's other romances are going to go stale eventually (especially if he marries a woman). But Heath will always remain young and beautiful in his mind, so a steady little flame can burn forever. ;)

Look how quickly PR is moving to capitalize on the Jake with any woman story. Disney probably pushed to have him be a presenter and had input on who he was matched with just to create some buzz prior to POP. Jake moved away from her as soon as his job was over.

No some do not. We did not ask nor publicize the question Jake was asked about Heath, we're watching it like anyone else. We're supposed to not react I guess. We're supposed to worship without question? He's the only person on the planet who hasn't responsed about Heath, but of course that is his prerogative. I can't assume the reason other people responded was because of their own self-interests, I don't know that.

Well, Nate asked Jake if he felt Heath's presence at the event, which is an odd question to ask. So it would have been difficult to answer just for that. And it was a celebratory event so as Nate himself said, it brought the mood down. I do want Jake to be asked about Heath, and to talk about him, but I don't think the specific question asked was the best way to go about it.

I went over to Gossip Boy and saw this, wondered if it was about Jake.

"This usually chipper actor was not his usual self last night. As he was sent here and there to talk and paint on a happy face, he was actually taken aside and told that he better sell his new movie and act like he is Mr. Happy. The poor actor was having a bad week and it was written all over his face. Though, once he got some drinks from George Clooney's flask, he seemed to be in a better mood."

Despite being happy for Maggie and smiling when Jake was with her, he seemed pensive and distracted in some shots, was seen with Clooney, and in an earlier paragraph, Gossip Boy said that it was observed that Jake was not in the best of moods. Jake also has a movie to sell.

Why Were The Guys So Angry?

Our sexy Jakey might have not been in the best of moods all evening, but he did manage to squeeze a smile out for some fans and paps. He looked very handsome, scowl and all. He didn't seem very social when he was interviewed by most, but sure perked up for Ryan Seacrest's interview. Maybe he was just mad that he had to go to Canada soon to film Source Code.

George arrived on the red carpet looking a lot older and like someone pissed in his Cheerios. He kept a flask in his pocket, offering shots to other down in the dumps actors. He and girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis looked stunning, but his piss poor attitude made him a lot more unattractive.

Maybe these guys just didn't feel like playing the HW game last night and would have rather been home having fun in front of the television.

I disagree that it was a tough, awkward or too personal question to be asked from the journalist’s point of view. It’s been two years and many of Heath’s peers talked about him already. Nate felt bad because of Jake’s reaction to it, not because it was inappropriate. Heath had won last year so it’s not all that surprising that someone would remember.

Anonymous said...

I think the time and place was inappropriate for such question, short and fluffy interview about dresses and purses isn't the best time to talk about lost friends and colleagues.

Yes, but it was the Oscars where Heath won last year and both were nominated for BBM. And the question was not too personal. The more I think about it, the less surprising it feels that Jake was asked about Heath.

Yes. Also, Nate's bf was killed during that horrible day-after-Christmas massive tsunami a few years ago while they were on vacation. Nate barely made it out alive himself. He knows what tragedy is. OT but the other night I was watching TMZ and they were talking to LL Cool J as he and a date (female) were leaving a restaurant. Even though they had a driver LL walked the lady to the limo, opened the door for her, made sure she got in okay, he swept her dress over to the inside so it wouldn't get caught in the door, and he shut the door for her, then he got in on the other side of the car (he didn't make her scoot over). He was so gracious and smooth. Made my heart melt.

Jake would have hopped in and let the other person fend for themselves.

My wife was singing in a club. After her show she asked me to hold her purse for a minute. I said, "Sure." It was an instinctive, helpful answer. I should have thought about it.

It was leopard print purse.

It was a gay men's club.

Jake Gyllenhaal Introduced Rachel Adams As Baby Mother

Jake Gyllenhaal introduced Rachel McAdams to friends as “the mother of his children” at the Oscars.

The Hollywood hunk is single following his split from Reese Witherspoon last year. He and Rachel presented the award for the Best Adapted Screenplay at the prestigious ceremony, and spent much of their time backstage deep in conversation.

They were huddled together in the lobby of Los Angeles Kodak Theatre, and only broke apart when some of Jake’s pals came up to speak to him.

“This is Rachel McAdams, she's the mother of my child,” Jake is quoted as saying to his friends.

As for bystanders, Jake was a professional colleague of Heath's. Everyone in TDK and Parnassus was asked about Heath at some point with hundreds of bystanders around. Why should Jake be any different.

I used to watch Oprah all the time, and loved when Nate was on. I don't watch it as much because I'm never home at that hour much now, but I can see Nate has a big heart!

Because it would be much better if Jake could answer such question with more concentration and less disturbance.

And because Heath is too precious to be discussed so casually.

A nice, quiet, prepared-for interview usually produces a rehearsed and sanitized statement. I much prefer off-the-cuff for everything, not only this topic.

Sorry guys, but you are suggesting that interviewers should trick people into getting honest and sincere answers.

Except that it's clear Jake isn't going to do that or it would've happened already. So I'm glad Nate asked the question - it was obviously a sincere question, made sense in the context of supporting actor presenting supporting actress, and he wasn't trying to make Jake look bad or anything. And I'm tired of people acting like Heath can't dare be discussed in front of Jake in public. I don't know why Heath's name hasn't passed his lips in public for two years, but if it had maybe he wouldn't have been so shocked. If they weren't that close, there's no reason for his silence and if they were close, then he shouldn't be afraid to show respect and affection for his friend.

Was he sincere or playing?
From the moment Jake registers the question about Heath, to the moment Nate apologizes:
Jake about Heath 1 (tongue)

Jake about Heath 2 (surprised)

Jake about Heath 3 (is that sorrow?)

Jake about Heath 4

Jake about Heath 5

Jake about Heath 6 (can't smile)

Jake about Heath 7 (apology)

Was this taken just afterwards? He looks a little melancholy and/or guilty. Caught.

You could say I'm cold for thinking it, but imo Jake’s reaction to that impromptu question is far more enlightening that a sit-down interview would be.

Dear Ted:
In one of your recent posts, you commented, "remember, T.Swift never rocked the purity ring like those JoBros did. She's not a fake, which, in our book, really makes you sexy." Are all of the purity ring wearers in Hollywood fake, or do some of them actually keep their promises?
—Cea

Dear Gullible:
I believe Jake Gyllenhaal has put his back on, but, he's pretty much the exception.

Dear Ted:
With One Tree Hill being on the bubble of cancellation, do you think the same is true for Sophia and Austin? How long do you think they'll last if OTH gets the axe?
—Alittlebliss

Dear Good Question:
Hmm. How long did it take for Sophia's BFF Danneel Harris to tell me she's so getting married to Jensen Ackles? About the same time.

Dear Ted:
So the "big coming out" on the cover of The Advocate is Sean Hayes, like seriously? God, even my grandma, who has no clue about who Madonna is, already knew he was gay. It's great for him, but if that's what some HW gay journalists are considering as a major revelation, it only unfortunately proves that there's still a looong way until any gay A-lister (Toothy Tile, I'm looking at you) will be comfortable to officially be proud of who they are and who they love, and that's really sad and disappointing. But I guess one tiny little baby step after the other is better than nothing.
—Audrey

Dear You Maybe Gotta Point:
I still don't think we should keep settling for only small-screen stars to do our same-sex battling for us. It's all very second-class citizen stuff, really. We should demand the big leaguers be honest with us, too.

Bitch Back!

Thanks. I love him and I do feel bad for him but I’m not sorry Nate asked him about Heath. About time somebody did.

Well, my heart kinda broke watching his answer. I wasn't expecting him to be asked about Heath. Nobody even asked about the "rupture" from Reese Witherspoon. (see French article) Ha!

I think it was before.

I don't think the question was planned and this is some sort of damage control like someone suggested, though. He was genuinely shocked when Nate asked the H question.

"A nice, quiet interview" is the best way to talk and learn what other people want you to know about them.

I don't think people need to be tricked, but if you interview people, especially actors, on their terms, it's very difficult to get at the truth if they don't want to give it. A pro like Barbara Wawa might pull it out, but many interviewers get nothing of any real interest.

You know Jake's not going to sit down for any Heath talk anyway. If by some remote chance he does, it will be prepared in advance to show himself to the maximum advantage. I have little interest in that. So yes, straightforward questions in context, such as Nate asked, as the way to go, imo.

A while back Matt Damon was suddenly asked about Heath during an unrelated interview and he said some interesting stuff. I can't find it now, but it seemed more honest than all the usually crap people said.

Anonymous said...

That Heath’s death obviously (still) affects him. I don’t think I could trust a pr sanctioned/rehearsed interview enough, not after Reeke.

I'm not sure what your point is. Obviously it was Jake's decision (ultimately, although he was probably given advice); obviously we have the right to be pissed off or speculate; and obviously the rest is up to Jake. So, other than stating the obvious, I don't get the point of your post other than to deliver a lecture.

Matt Damon Talks About Heath

"Heath's the best actor I've ever worked with," he says. "Coming off The Brothers Grimm, which wasn't particularly well-received, I remember telling people about him. 'Heath Ledger, you mean the guy from A Knight's Tale?' they would say. I'd tell them, 'No, you wait!' And then he did Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight. People just got a glimpse of what he was going to do. He was so full of life. I don't think I'll ever get over that, nor will anybody who knew him. He was a miracle of a man. It's just horrible. It sucks." He starts to tear up, and gulps down some much-needed mineral water."

A real interview is an opportunity to hear elaborate answers, to give someone time to think and tell you more. You can't force a person to be sincere, so PR doesn't really matter.

I don't need to hear it, but if somewhere on down the linefeels up to speaking about it, whether impromptu or planned, fine. Heath deserves it.

So we can knock Jake for bearding, hiding a baby, his film choices, or ignoring his long-suffering boyfriend, but NOT for ignoring Heath.

LOL. Haters are so dumb.

It's Jake himself who has turned this into a big elephant in the room.

My point - it would be wrong to trick Jake into talking about Heath if he wants to remain silent.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, you can not compare those two issues.

Says you and the thought police?

He didn't - he could have said he would rather not discuss it, but he did discuss it the best that he could. I give him credit for that, handling it as best he could in an uncomfortable situation.

But why does he want to remain silent? Two years is a long time, you would think Jake would be okay with talking about Heath by now.

Anonymous said...

I just watched it again, and it wasn't so bad - Nate explained why, that he had been thinking about it during the Oscar ceremonies, and Jake admitted that he thought of Heath, that Heath was going to present for BSA, Maggie's category. He cares and still thinks of Heath. :)

Anonymous said...

^^sorry, would have presented. :)

Faking straight image for career reasons and keeping private feelings about friend's death can't be compared.

Jake has his reasons. We all have feelings and things we don't want to share with the rest of the world.

^^That's true - hearing it at Oscar time just ripped off the bandaid without warning for me. Nate was so sincere about it tho.

Yes, he did, and I think his silence was a good decision.

Anonymous said...

If he wants to remain silent, he can always say "I'd prefer not to talk about that, thank you." Easy as pie. No one can force him if he doesn't want to.

You seem to think he can't be treated like a normal adult. Celebrities are coddled divas who get their asses kissed 24/7. You don't have to buy in to that brownnosing, you know. What I respect are (the few) interviewers and journalists who respectfully cut through the bull.

Anonymous said...

Jake also has his reasons for his bearding. We all have feelings and things we don't want to share with the rest of the world.

I think his silence on his sexuality is a good decision.

"So we can knock Jake for bearding, hiding a baby, his film choices, or ignoring his long-suffering boyfriend, but NOT for ignoring Heath."

yes we can knock jake for ignoring heath since it's the only thing we know he did for sure LOL , as the rest......

more seriously , his feelings are his own, no need to express it publicely. It's clear they were friends and he must feel uncomfortable remembering heath.

Lainey knocks Nate and cheers Rake! I'm so glad.

"Click here to watch their interview with Nate Berkus until he kills the moment with a question about Heath Ledger. Jake was gracious and handled it beautifully and hopefully afterwards they played the awkward, um, like, when will I see you again game, and touched hands accidentally and pulled them away, and thought about each other all night afterwards."
