Happiness is a Choice

Advocate cover - Portia de Rossi
Portia de Rossi knew her "quiet life" was over when she fell for Ellen DeGeneres. Now, with a new book and a passionate taste for politics, she’s ready to step forward as the first lady of our fight for marriage equality.

She has that least likely of all Hollywood endings — a marriage everyone believes is the real deal. "It’s one thing to have attention; it’s one thing to stand for something," she says. "But unless it’s backed up with genuine happiness, I think people can sense that it’s not worth celebrating."

Whenever anyone asks De Rossi about marriage equality — and, grateful for whatever "little tiny platform" she’s given, she hopes they will — she reveals herself to be an impeccably prepared spokeswoman, a perfectly poised first lady of advocacy. Further proof will come in March when the Human Rights Campaign will acknowledge De Rossi with its Visibility Award at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

A year and a half after their 2008 wedding, she and DeGeneres are still that almost obnoxiously adorable couple. If anything, getting married has only made them more so. Even the paparazzi seem to buy into their love story, mostly leaving the two alone. "To think that a married gay couple is considered boring and normal is fantastic," she says. "Happiness is a choice too. It’s a choice to live in a state of gratitude and to fix what makes you unhappy. Being honest with who you are, being able to go out into the world and show people that you can be successful and be happy and be in a good marriage — it’s important."

She makes another straightforward "case closed" argument for actors coming out, usual Hollywood scare tactics be damned. "People say, 'There are lots of openly gay actors.' And I’m like, who? If everybody I knew that was gay and not being open about it came out, it would make a huge difference to people coming up as young actors in Hollywood. Huge. To producers, to people in casting. I’m sure that when I was with Ellen a lot of people wondered if I could play a straight role convincingly. By having the opportunity, other people can go, 'Oh, that’s OK. It didn’t kill that show. That was believable.'"

In comparison to her wife, at least, "I haven’t said 'I’m gay' that often," she says. Maybe that was true back when the idea of Portia as the femme fatale still cast such a long shadow over her public life.

This is what she has to say now: "Being on Oprah was a very surreal moment — to go from being so closeted and so afraid to talk about my sexuality to sitting with my wife, talking about my wedding and how much I love her. To look out at that audience and see most of the audience crying — Oprah was crying! Life can take so many twists and turns. You can’t ever count yourself out. Even if you’re really afraid at some point, you can’t think that there’s no room for you to grow and do something good with your life."

Beating the horse but wtf, you all started it.

Jake: “I mean, one of the best scenes in the movie for me is when Heath goes to the truck and punches that guy and gets thrown across the road, that makes me cry every time. Cos, one, I know it was the last day of shooting for him and he asked our wrangler, who is the guy who he punched, "Let's really fight; I really want you to beat me up" and he really got thrown across the cement.”

I'm sure Jake will never mention Heath again in this way or if he's forced to comment, say something generic. Jake has a problem with the Toothy image so he has to joke while others can be serious.

I don't think Jake will ever mention Heath publicly in any way again. All the excuses - he doesn't owe the public anything, he doesn't need to display his grief, he's too upset, he'll talk when he's ready, he'll have to say something eventually, blah, blah, blah. There were even absurd scenarios floated that the two of them must've had some secret "pact" not to mention the other and Jake was just respecting that. Yeah, right.

Anonymous said...

I think he will someday. Just that quote about his favorite scene from Brokeback is quite emotional, so I can imagine it must be difficult for him.

I think bearding is homophobic and disgusting, so yes, I don't find it amusing that people are constantly trying to find him the "perfect" beard.

12:48 - 12:40 made perfect sense to me. Jake's compliment of Peter killed three birds with one stone.

Distract attention away from press ban on picture of jake hugging his slightly effeminate brother in law.

Distract attention away from bbm, which is always at the top of every great film list. He was one of the stars of this film, and arguably gave the greatest performance as a closeted gay man chained to a pushy, controlling semi-beard. Remember? Good, because post reeke / pre POP jake wants you to forget.

Shore up his hetero credentials and Peter's hetero credentials (read text of his compliment again).

Sorry, but this doesn't make sense. Both talked about each other in interviews before Heath died.

That's why I said they were absurd scenarios. But here's a couple of quotes from the DC forum that were in the "Farewell to Heath" thread (same poster, two different posts):

"Obviously they had some kind of agreement post Brokeback to keep a public distance from each other. Why they did is anyone's guess but the most glaring example is the refusal to be photographed together at the Oscars. I mean, what kind of people would NOT be photographed together at an event where their movie and they themselves are up for Oscars?!? That Jake continues to honor this agreement after Heath's death says to me he cares more about honoring Heath's wishes than being unpopular with his or anyone’s fan group."
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"It also doesn't take into consideration what Jake and Heath agreed to do, we are not privy to their agreements but there does exist evidence that they had some kind of agreement and it may very well be that Jake IS honoring that agreement by keeping his mouth shut."
Anonymous said...
Why is it so impossible to believe that Jake wanted to support his talented brother in law who is constantly overlooked, regardless of his tone?
Anonymous said...
Supporting Peter is fine, talking about his favourite film moment of the decade would be better.
I wouldn't expect him to talk about his own film, but I am curious about what he thought of TDK.
He said it was his duty. But he was in the middle of reeking, his parents were on the verge of divorce and add to that his personal weird life (did he have a double life while reeking?). There wasn't much time. We never saw or heard about a visit or anything. I think he might have seen her just a couple of times. That's about it.
IMO Jake avoided answering the "favorite performance of the last decade" question because it was too broad and difficult to answer, thus turning it into a brown-nosing than anything else. Your favorite performance by an actor in the last 10 years?! 10 Years?! How many movies and performances, especially an actor whose job it is to study the art, does a person see in 10 years? Ten fucking years....how was Jake to narrow it down to one friggin person? C'mon. That's like asking a parent which child is their favorite. Jake probably thinks many performances are worthy but it wouldn't be fair to name one or play favorites. I think he gave the Peter answer genuinely because he likes his acting, and he's family, but also because he truly was unable to give an answer to such a narrow limited question.
Anonymous said...
how was Jake to narrow it down to one friggin person?
Simple, you just choose one film moment or performance that stayed with you:
Sandra Bullock - Kate Winslet in The Reader
Jeff Bridges - Mike White in Chuck&Buck
Julianne Moore - Sean Penn in Mystic River
Carey Mulligan - Saoirse Ronan in Atonement
Woody Harrelson - Ulrich MĂ¼he in The Lives of Others
Morgan Freeman - Meryl Streep in anything she has done in the last 50 years (his words!)
Christoph Waltz - Tommy Lee Jones in No Country For Old Men
Sam Worthington - Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor
Vera Farmiga - Michael Fassbender in Hunger
Tobey Maguire - Leonardo DiCaprio in the Aviator
Colin Firth - Kevin Bacon in The Woodsman
Zoë Saldana - Wei Tang in Lust, Caution
George Clooney - Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose
Sorry 5:36 PM, but we did watch that video and we did hear some great answers from people like George Clooney and Colin Firth.
I think Jake's answer to that question is safe in that it doesn't offend anyone. Jake always seems to me like he wants to give the answer that will offend the least amount of people, and mentioning your brother-in-law is a way to do that. It doesn't matter if his real answer was Heath or someone else, I can see Jake thinking other people he is friends with, has worked with, or might work with in the future might feel slighted.
I do think however that Peter is a great, underappreciated actor.
ITA.
Anonymous said...
Ten fucking years....how was Jake to narrow it down to one friggin person? C'mon. That's like asking a parent which child is their favorite.
Nonsense. It doesn’t take a genius to choose one performance and discuss it in a thoughtful, articulate manner. If other actors could do it, why couldn't Jake?
Anonymous said...
5:38 I guess I'm more of a cynic than you. I also believe Jake is more fair and diplomatic than most. I still stand on my statement that he couldn't choose only one actor or one performance; have you ever noticed that when asked thru the years about his favorite movie that it has changed to whatever good one he saw most recently? IMO he has an appreciation for many performances, as do many actors in the vid/list, but he refused to play favorites and like an above poster said, he didn't want to offend anyone. IMO Jake showed class and diplomacy when he was asked to basically evaluate his peers.
Yes, the theory of a babbler-type who was pissed off that reasonable people wondered why Jake hadn't made a statement about Heath. You don't have to read the entire thread - just the parts that were quoted. And the only reason I quoted and posted them is because someone else seemed to question the fact that such absurd scenarios were ever floated to begin with. The babblers were beside themselves with indignation that anyone dared to question Jake's silence. In fact, I believe that topic also got banned by the powers that be.
Vampire Weekend Cast Jake Gyllenhaal, Joe Jonas, RZA, and Lil Jon In Next Video
Think Ghostface turned RZA on to Vampire Weekend? Probably. According to Anthem Magazine (via P4K), who talked to co-director Emmett Malloy (younger brother Brendan also directs), Ezra Koening came up with the video's tennis match concept on his own. RZA plays ref, Lil Jon is a tennis coach, and Gyllenhaal and Jonas are competitors. Malloy mentioned that band friend "Jenny," who looks like the same Jenny from their "Oxford Comma" video, stars.
6:05 thinks there's only one way a person should view the world and behave; anything else means the person is shallow, silly and immature. FYI I am not defending Jake; fact is I would give a non-answer to a wide question like what's my favorite performance in ten years - and yes it is a wide question because it gives no parameters as to genre, it encompasses a huge time period and thousands of performances. The question is too nebulous and vague. And I wouldn't give a fuck if and what any others answered; that's their problem. So if that means I'm silly, shallow and immature in your opinion, good. You seem to be so rigid, annoying and dismissing of others that if you disagree with me, then I must be doing something right.
Goodbye. I have better things to do.
I don't know if that's true or not. So maybe they didn't want to be papped all the time together. But the entire reason for the post at the DC Forum was to try and make the point that Jake would have somehow "dishonored" their friendship by making a statement - which is total b.s. Keeping a public distance to avoid paps is one thing - but there is no way you could "dishonor" or betray a friend by putting out a respectful statement acknowledging and honoring his contribution to his craft. He didn't have to get personal.
Come on. this is a stretch even for a Jake apologist. His answer could be described as courteous. To say he was showing class and diplomacy is ridiculous. How is it classy to be the only person to promote your own family?
Jake used the opportunity to score points and promote his brother-in-law. Even if he actually thinks Peter (a fine actor) had the best moment of anyone else in 10 years, no other actor promoted their own films or relatives.
I suppose if Jake did any kind of selfish or repugnant thing...put money and fame first, for example, faked a relationship, made his boyfriend suffer, ignored his godchild (and threw her father overboard), some would say it's Jake showing his class and consideration.
He must feel pretty bad about it since the fact they played gay on Brokeback Mountain together. I just want to know what he thinks.
I don't want to be picky, really...but his name is actually Vincent Jay.
Ah you're right! Thanks for pointing it out. That's the problem when someone has "first names" for their first and last..also when they're cute and make out with their bfs in front of the cameras. I'm shocked I can remember he's from France and what sport he's in!
I'll just call him Gay Jay!
Praise the Lord! Elton John: ‘I think Jesus was a ... gay man’
"I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems,” he told Parade. “On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don't know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East — you're as good as dead."
Principal photography will begin in around 2 weeks on Jones’ second feature, the story of Colter Stevens (Gyllenhaal) a helicopter pilot who wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a train bombing until he can find the perpetrator.
I can totally understand that!
I wonder if Jake skis. IIRC he's never mentioned it although he says he's athletic. He's never said anything about playing golf or volleyball either.
tbh I sometimes wonder if females appreciate movies for the art form of entertainment or if they use movies and actors to cull and satisfy their fantasies.
Anonymous said...
I personally don't want someone like Jake to EVER mention Heath. Heath has received more than enough love and kudos from many, many people who are a hundred times more accomplished and admirable than silly Jake.
Good point. And the way he handled the question about his favorite performance of the decade proves the silly part, too, especially in comparison to the other actors.
Yes. Personal = saying something about losing a friend to death, not "a respectful statement acknowledging and honoring Heath's contribution to his craft".
I see what you're saying. imo, he should have done both, but it's too late now. And all the spin about how he was really respecting Heath with his silence is just that - spin.
Bradley is a bad fake boyfriend - and I like that!
"Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show yesterday, the hunky actor [Bradley Cooper] said: “My mother is coming in tomorrow and we are going to have a nice Valentine’s Day, which is Sunday.”
Asked if any other women will be joining them, he said: ‘[No] that’s it.’ Bradley — who has been been dating Renee since August — added that he is “very excited” to be spending the day with his mom."
Bradley is a good son!
LoL at the Hollywood definition of dating.
Same thing can be said about male public, don't be so misogynist.
Anonymous said...
Guys are a bit different. The average male moviegoer wants to be a movie hero, doesn't want to marry or fuck him.
29 December 2009
Speaking of success, who would have imagined the run of luck Bradley Cooper has had this year? Two hit films. Well, two films that didn't bomb. The flip side is that he's once again the target of those gay “rumors.” Well, for legal reasons, we must refer to them as "rumors,” despite our own personal knowledge. That said, I was amused by Ted Casablanca's take on Cooper's numerous romantic entanglements: "We seriously think his publicist has more to do with these A-list couplings that his heart. He knows he's unavailable - in more ways than one, trust - but he's trying to convince these women otherwise." Truer words were never uttered.
Re: the homophobic comments of Bradley Cooper being gay on/off screen
I can’t believe how narrow-minded and stupid these women are. This is why gay actors (Jake and Austin included) have to remain closeted and beard to the point of becoming a joke. Hollywood will never change with an audience like that.
I'd like to add one thing:
I can’t believe how narrow-minded and stupid these young women are.
US has a page about Reese' hot new relationship she has happily moved on you'll be pleased to know. However, Jake has not. He was out with Maggie looking sad and need of consolation. She rubbed his back and he put his head on her shoulder.
Poor Jake!!
LOL!
Anonymous said...
Ugh will this crap never end?
Anonymous said...
It will end. Reese just needs to sell "I'm so blessed and desirable even thought my wonderful romance ended" bullshit for a few more months.
wow to that latest US Weekly bit about Witherspoon. Reese looks strong and in control of her life and able to move on. Jake looks weak and clingy. I'd buy Reese as the Prince of Persia before Jake. She has the balls and seems to have Jake's as well.
Yup, 10:46 Reese is winning that game. Jakes's PR= Epic Fail.
I'm sure about one thing - Jake should fire his PR people.
Jakes PR said...
SHIT!!
Anonymous said...
It's not about the balls. Reese is using PR to build and sell fake public image, she has no problem with lying and spining everything she can. Nothing to be admired and some actors aren't willing to go that far.
Anonymous said...
11:48 it has nothing to do with admiration. it's all about the game. And if Jake had a fauxmance or a photo op romance he is indeed willing to go far to play it. And so far, as a player, it looks like he is being played.
Anonymous said...
I'm sure about one thing - Jake should fire his PR people.
Hiring that PR guru for gay celebrities could be a bit too much at the moment, but if Jake is serious about his A-list plan then he sould start selling what he has and what he's willing to share with the public. Jake is good looking and likeable, he should use that, sports and Green Schools Initiative to promote himself.
Anonymous said...
Jake is in the closet, he is "second-class citizen" in Hollywood, he is not in the same position as straight actors or actresses who would do anything to get the press and sell a lie.
