Happiness is a Choice

Advocate cover - Portia de Rossi
Portia de Rossi knew her "quiet life" was over when she fell for Ellen DeGeneres. Now, with a new book and a passionate taste for politics, she’s ready to step forward as the first lady of our fight for marriage equality.

She has that least likely of all Hollywood endings — a marriage everyone believes is the real deal. "It’s one thing to have attention; it’s one thing to stand for something," she says. "But unless it’s backed up with genuine happiness, I think people can sense that it’s not worth celebrating."

Whenever anyone asks De Rossi about marriage equality — and, grateful for whatever "little tiny platform" she’s given, she hopes they will — she reveals herself to be an impeccably prepared spokeswoman, a perfectly poised first lady of advocacy. Further proof will come in March when the Human Rights Campaign will acknowledge De Rossi with its Visibility Award at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

A year and a half after their 2008 wedding, she and DeGeneres are still that almost obnoxiously adorable couple. If anything, getting married has only made them more so. Even the paparazzi seem to buy into their love story, mostly leaving the two alone. "To think that a married gay couple is considered boring and normal is fantastic," she says. "Happiness is a choice too. It’s a choice to live in a state of gratitude and to fix what makes you unhappy. Being honest with who you are, being able to go out into the world and show people that you can be successful and be happy and be in a good marriage — it’s important."

She makes another straightforward "case closed" argument for actors coming out, usual Hollywood scare tactics be damned. "People say, 'There are lots of openly gay actors.' And I’m like, who? If everybody I knew that was gay and not being open about it came out, it would make a huge difference to people coming up as young actors in Hollywood. Huge. To producers, to people in casting. I’m sure that when I was with Ellen a lot of people wondered if I could play a straight role convincingly. By having the opportunity, other people can go, 'Oh, that’s OK. It didn’t kill that show. That was believable.'"

In comparison to her wife, at least, "I haven’t said 'I’m gay' that often," she says. Maybe that was true back when the idea of Portia as the femme fatale still cast such a long shadow over her public life.

This is what she has to say now: "Being on Oprah was a very surreal moment — to go from being so closeted and so afraid to talk about my sexuality to sitting with my wife, talking about my wedding and how much I love her. To look out at that audience and see most of the audience crying — Oprah was crying! Life can take so many twists and turns. You can’t ever count yourself out. Even if you’re really afraid at some point, you can’t think that there’s no room for you to grow and do something good with your life."

Does anyone know what that Economy Candy in NYC is like? Do people just sit around at small tables and eat candy?!

Ecomomy Candy is an old school candy store. Most of the prices are good. You can buy bulk, classics, penny candy (not a penny anymore), nuts and other things. It is very small and very packed. They sell gummys that I've never seen elseware. It's the only place i can find poprocks and other hard to find candies. You can spend a lot of time there and most of the prices are decent. It is a fun place, better than the typical candy stores. I like it better than Dylan's.

"Trying to distract again from the topic of Austin, just like clockwork."

Austin who?

"But there are people who really do see JT as an actual hero and think the only flaw the character had was loving Ennis too much."

Jack Twist was unquestionably the hero of BBM. Anne Proulx signalled as much when she gave Twist the traditional name given to male action heroes : Jack. Twist was probably a play on 'bent', which is a european (esp. German) synonym for homosexual or queer.

Ennis, the dull-witted, predictable foil who pathologized his homosexuality the way that people pathologize drug addiction or alchohol abuse, was given a generic western name with no heroic allusions or symbolic significance.

"Godot should be renamed JAB. Just Austin Blog."

ITA.

"I thought the lack of jake/austin pictures was due to reeke. But if none surface after reeke it could be that boat has sailed."

The boat was always a one-man gay canoe, and Jake was the sole occupant. Austin just observed from the shore.

How strange that there wasn't any advance notice that Jake was going to be at this gaming thing (store, event, party, conference?) the twitterer mentioned. Maybe he was a surprise guest? He's dressed up and I have to say he's dressed like Austin sans the leather jacket. Hmm I wonder also if he or his PR is having him show up at public places like stores and the streets, Times Square, just to get noticed and create a fan flurry. He sure didn't do that when bearding, plus he lost a lot of fans. To show up in NYC walking around on a Saturday is suspicious too; celebs usually stay away from places with crowds, i.e. weekends.

That's Katz. It is an old school deli. The tables are pushed together. Tight quarters. Looks like a cafeteria from way back. Sandwiches are good and huge but expensive.

Damn you 6:47. I was hoping it was a diner that served only candy. "And for my third course I'd like a side of Mary Janes and a roll of Sweet Tarts"

Anonymous said...

Au contraire, mon ami.

Ennis' name is hardly a generic Western name to my knowledge, I thought it was a rather unusual choice. It does have allusions and symbolism associated with it, island, isolation, the sea. As far as pathologizing his homosexuality, he did what many have done for the time period. The name Jack is one of my very favorites, but it is a very generic one, like John. To me, it's synonymous with man, guy, boy, etc.

LOL, you need read up a little on BBM and its characters. The name "Ennis" is Gaelic for 'island' or 'sole or only choice' and Del Mar is Spanish for 'of the sea'. So the translation of Ennis De Mar would be 'island of the sea', DEFINITELY symbolic.

As much as I love Jack BBM IS Ennis’s story and acting like it isn’t is plain silly.

They really are some of the hottest kisses I have ever seen, even between a man and a woman. They are two extremely hot men. The kissing scenes are heavenly.

Jack becomes so much more than just a guy to Ennis, in both the story and the film, it's quite amazing to watch. Since Heath's passing, I do still watch, and sometimes I am overjoyed to see him as Ennis, and other times moved to tears. Jake is a vision in it too.

You think "Ennis" is a generic western name? LOL. As has already been pointed out his name means "Island of the Sea." You can't possibly be at all familiar with the story and not know that. Again, BBM is Ennis's story, plain and simple. Stop the babbler talk and go educate yourself before you make an even bigger fool of yourself than you already have.

"Hathaway's Big Score?" comments:

Jeff, sorry but I find most of the reviews, by so called experts, of Jake Gyllenhaal's performances are way off the mark. I think you and your reviewer friends underrate Jake unfairly. Most of the movies I have seen him in he is better than most of the reviews give him credit for. I will wait and see for myself because I think Jake is an excellent actor.

I am happy to hear about Anne Hathaway as I think she is a lovely actress.
...

I have not yet seen the assembled movie but I have been told:

A.) The audience reaction at the Pasadena screening (first screening) was highly enthusiastic.
B.) The movie is better than on the page.
C.) Hathaway is great and her performance will mark a true, star-charter catalyst.

Anonymous said...

wow. great pictures of Jake with fans. It's almost like he's trying to rehabilitate his image. no?

Anonymous said...

Good for Anne and good for Jake, too. The movie sounds like it will be a hit. Even if Anne gets most of the attention for her role, it certainly can't hurt Jake to be in a movie that's getting such a positive buzz.

Anonymous said...

Jack Twist was the hero of BBM, and proulx pretty much said so. I agree with the previous post. Ennis was exactly and precisely what Stonewall was designed to avoid.

Anonymous said...

Uh, does someone here not understand what being in the closet means. There have been no pictures of Jake and Austin because they are hiding their relationship.

Anonymous said...

Jack Twist was the hero of BBM, and proulx pretty much said so.

"Pretty much?" LOL. In other words, she said no such thing. Nice try. And Stonewall has nothing to do with it. The story was about destructive rural homophobia, ffs. Jesus, why do babbler-types have to turn every thing into a fucking competition? It's always Jack v. Ennis or Jake v. Heath. It's been four years, give it a rest.

Anonymous said...

It's almost like he's trying to rehabilitate his image. no?

Post-Reese Jake is certainly a different Jake, that's for sure. She can plant all the stories she wants about being in the "best mood ever" but he's the one who looks like he's had a huge weight lifted off his shoulders for the past three months.

Anonymous said...

Who knew tiny would be a heavy, big pain in the ass?!

Anonymous said...

Annie Proulx NEVER said Jack Twist was the hero of BBM or that Ennis was what Stonewall was trying to avoid. She NEVER SAID THAT. She said they were poor uneducated guys trying to scrap a living and get along. NEVER that Jack Twist was the hero of BBM.He most certainly was NOT. He was a tragic figure as was Ennis (and also, sadly their wives too).

Anonymous said...

^^ITA. They were very human and flawed characters, which made them very beautiful IMO. Not simplistic hero and action types. Maybe poor and uneducated, but certainly not dull-witted. And I have no idea why Stonewall would be brought up in connection with Ennis. Ennis was victimized by a homophobic society every bit as much as Jack, just in a different way. So were Lureen and Alma.

Anonymous said...

Stonewall uprising took place in 1969, six years after Ennis/Jack first met. It had NOTHING to do with them. Plus, Stonewall happened in NYC--Ennis/Jack were products of rural/Western America. Very different from NYC (but maybe not so different in 1963).

Anonymous said...

Ennis was a small minded idiot who pathologized his homosexuality and blamed Jack's sexual desires for his own problems. He was a pathetic character seen millions of times in films, and I hope that we never have to see him again. Jack, a rural gay man who was out to himself and wanted to remain in the country, was a first for a major motion picture. He was a man of the future caught in the past. Ennis was a self-loathing man of his time, only two steps removed from the thugs who killed Jack.

From the standpoint of many gay men, Ennis' loathsomeness is the reason why there should never be a sequel of BBM. The most important, inspirational character is dead. What's the point? The last thing I'd want to see is another movie in which the self-loathing, dull-witted Ennis drags some other gay man - closeted or not - through the mud.

The strangest thing about BBM is not the identity of the person most post-Stonewall gays and lesbians identified with - the courageous Jack - but that the casting turned out to be so eerily accurate.

Heath, like Ennis, distanced himself from Jake, and ended up lonely and miserable, closer to his daughter than the mother of his child. And Jake, like Jack, hid behind his own version of the creepy, controlling Lureen - Reese - and a part of his soul died in the process.

The huge relief on Jake's face that we see now is probably what Jack would have looked like if he had the courage to get away from Lureen, Randall AND Ennis.

Life really does mirror art.

Jake said...

Heath, like Ennis, distanced himself from Jake, and ended up lonely and miserable, closer to his daughter than the mother of his child."

What a moronic thing to say. LOTS of people break up with the mother of their child and remain close to their child(ren). NOTHING nefarious about that. As for Heath distancing himself from Jake, actually from what little has emerged about their friendship, that was NOT true. And how the heck would you know what their true friendship was like? The fact that Jake has said NOTHING when so many people including his own sister and Anne too have said something speaks volumes. And it has nothing to do with Jake wanting nothing to do with Heath but something far different.

Anonymous said...

Jack was a little further along with self-acceptance than Ennis, but he was hardly out. Married a woman to hide behind, and sneaking off on the DL. Hardly a hero.

Anonymous said...

Didn't Jim Sheridan say he first met Jake through Heath at the Chateau Marmont. He said they were both hanging out together at the pool...(I don't think he was referring to when they were at the SAG Awards and Heath/Michelle were staying at the Chateau Marmont).

The statements you make are so moronic I know you are here only to incite Heath hatred. Bored with your own pathetic little life, are you?

If Jack's lifestyle of marriage, kid and secret lovers is courageous, you must think Jake and his bearding is fucking heroic. You are seriously delusional.

And NO "post-Stonewall" gay or lesbian identified with Jack OR Ennis. That was the issue with Proulx's story.

I think they are shooting the GQ photoshoot in Times Square. Jake with the crowd.

Anonymous said...

I really don't get it. Since when was Heath a closeted gay like Ennis? He was a playboy who used to hook up with his cute little co stars. Unfortunately "not to bright" Michelle took it more seriously than Heath, add to that his serious substance problem...hence break up. He was dating model Gemma at the time of his death. By now he would have dated yet another woman. I think he and Jake were friends, but avoided being seen together publically and being in tabloids that maybe would have alluded they are more. No need for that, if it isn't true anyway.
But some have a very low opinion of Heath and that'll never change.

H/M - it's not fair blaming Heath for everything that went wrong. Michelle shouldn't have gotten (on purpose to keep him?) pregnant after approximately 6 months of dating him (and according to reports she KNEW about his drug usage too). She also, accoding to Lainey, cheated on Heath with McGregor on the set of Incendiary. But she seems to love getting it on on set, Heath got her into his trailer after a couple of days of shooting. Michelle and shy, my ass. Heath went from a classy woman like Watts to Michelle. Definitely downgrade. To stay fair, I admit Michelle is a good actress and it seems she's a good mom too.

People put napkins on their laps when eating sometimes.
There is no food on the table.

10:47, Why are you being so obtuse? The point is that the guy next to Jake has both hands on his glass - it's easy to see that, so there's no hand in anyone's lap. That's the freaking point. Stop obsessing about whether it's a napkin or not. It's just an educated and logical guess. Maybe you don't put a napkin on your lap when eating or drinking but a lot of people do.

The truth for some is: Heath only hooked up with MW to protect him from gay rumors. Persuaded her to have his baby to make it more credible. A year after BBM promotion he dumped her and the kid. And after he died everyone saw that he didn't love Matilda because he didn't include her in his will.
Matilda's whole existance is based on a lie.

That batshit crazy brokies that post on Dc and here are hypocrites. They were no fans of Heath when he was alive, accussing him of hooking up with Michele for cover, dissing Jake, etc. As soon as he died, they changed their views onhim, revisionist history.

I remember how dead his thread was on DC when he was alive and with that icky woman vs Jake's thread.

And now Jake and Heath had something going on, yeah right.

She thought Jake's muscles and his tan didn't look real and that she didn't like his fake British accent. Furthermore she complained there were no main Persian actors in the movie and how this is a form of racism in Hollywood.
She mentioned she did like Jake in Zodiac and BBM, in PoP not at all.

Well, the stuff about the muscles, tan and accent is superficial stuff that doesn't really tell you anything about whether the movie is enjoyable or a fun romp or whatever it's supposed to be. And the racism stuff is political (I'm not saying it isn't true); but, again, most of the audience isn't going to care about that and is just looking to have a good time. But, then again, maybe the whole thing is a mess, who knows?

Hallo!

Some barking mad brookies have never been able to separate the actors from their roles in BBM (see 11:35 PM) and they never forgave Heath for hooking up with Michelle like he somehow he betrayed Jake by doing so. I think a lot of the hatred for Heath comes from that which is insane. They were not real life lovers, people!

"Some barking mad brookies have never been able to separate the actors from their roles in BBM (see 11:35 PM) and they never forgave Heath for hooking up with Michelle like he somehow he betrayed Jake by doing so"

And then, after Heath and Michelle break up, they continued hating him for dating a woman outside of the "Brokeback Mountain world".
As an old brookie myself, sometimes I feel ashamed of my own kind :(

I understand that, but the point is we're not really going to know what the movie or Jake's performance is like until it's released. Maybe great, maybe bad, maybe somewhere in between. It sounds like she had some issues with the movie that most of the audience won't care about.

Anonymous said...

12:28 PM, lol. Yeah I don't think some fans were too fond of the Gemma Ward/Heath pairing when they got wind of it.
I think Heath could never win. On his IMDB board his own fans (like the infamous Cornelia) were highly critical of him. There was a funny post once when someone asked if people posting there were really fans. LOL.

Dear Ted:
Don't you think it's funny that longtime friends and One Tree Hill costars Austin Nichols and Sophia Bush are upping their showmance and staging photo ops with PDAs right as the show is in decline and at risk of being cancelled? I thought Austin would have learned from his good friend Jake Gyllenhaal that being part of a fauxmance doesn't exactly translate into career opportunities. They should focus on the quality of work and not being a joke in sugary photo ops. Are the CW and the producers of the show pushing them to do these tacky publicity tricks, or is it their own initiative for personal promo reasons?
—Natalie

Dear Too Sweet:
Whether Austin and Sophia's people urged them to up their exposure or not, the duo knows a little PDA can go a long way. Especially with the show on the chopping board; A.N. and S.B. need to stay in the limelight for post-Tree acting opportunities.

Dear Ted:
A little while ago you told some of things that Toothy Tile and Judas have in common. So how about some of the things Dashed and Grey Goose have in common?

Dear Closeted Connection:
They're both pseudo-normal dudes who have to put up with crazy closet case stars who have a greater amount of H'wood clout. Sounds like DDD and Mr. Goose could be good friends—they definitely have a lot in common.

Cosmo has some advices for surviving the Great Recession:
1. Break your birth-control pills in half.
2. Put your rottweiler on a diet.
3. Get laser hair removal for half off at a salon training night.
4. Give your "gently used" toilet paper another go.
5. Skip the liquor store and come up with new cocktail ideas involving mouthwash and vanilla extract.
6. Take advantage of the low fares offered by What's That Noise? Airlines.

Think Reese would love #4. :)

I NEED A BIGGER MONITOR!

LOL Jake is trawling the streets for a new beard.

Anonymous said...

With all this talk about Toothy wanting to be more open or coming out in the near future, I had an idea. What if PoP is so bad that Disney will allow Jake to be more open during promo (or maybe even come out) and use that publicity for the movie.
Any kind of publicity could be good for them and if the bearding campaign didn’t work, maybe they’ll let Jake go for it and use that publicity. Creating headlines with his name will create momentum when they release the movie.
If I see it as a positive PR move, they can use that to also clean Disney’s old image and have a positive PR with the new generation of younger people, showing they are open minded and a new Hollywood. If I see it as a negative and calculating PR move, maybe they expect that the movie will fail at the box office, and they are creating a reason other than a bad movie to take the blame to justify it in front of the investors.
Aren’t they under a new management now and trying new strategies for their movies? Is it too crazy to think that this can be a possibility?

Anonymous said...

^another thing that made me think about this plan is that Jake's next movie is LAOD and the description of the sex scenes, with tons of nudity and playing a ladies man. It's great if he wants to come out because it would show he can play not only an action heroe (PoP) but a convincing leading man in a hetero role.
