Gay Celebrities Don’t Have To Come Out?

Celebrities like Michael Urie and Matt Bomer have been getting hammered recently for not being more vocal about their sexuality. Bomer, who was pictured kissing up on another man, defensively explained that he’s “completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life” and doesn’t give two shits that people think he’s gay. Urie, meanwhile, argued that he didn’t feel the need to declare his sexuality, a move that had this site’s owner saying Urie’s an “anti-activist,” because coming out’s “the most powerful and necessary action any LGBT person can make.” The Ugly Betty actor did, however, say that he’s dating a man, so he’s being criticized for not coming out enough. This debate makes me wonder: Should it be someone’s duty to declare his sexuality? We’re constantly coming out, so how often and when does it need to be done? Should people be required to come out and show the world a positive gay face?
...

Activism, like gay people, comes in many forms. Coming out counts as an example, yes, but not coming out isn’t harmful. It would be nice if Urie, who plays one of television’s most hilarious gay characters, could own up to it, rather than relying on the “it could hurt my career” excuse and insisting that just because he’s with a man now, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s “gay.” He’s queer. Fine, whatever. But Urie’s parsing and Bomer’s avoidance both fit into a Hollywood model, their approaches are not necessarily harmful. They’re weak and lamentable, yes, but in the long run not calamitous. Staying in the closet only hurts when it’s coupled with harmful action, like anti-gay legislation, hence the moral relativism of outing a politician.

While the “coming out can hurt a career” argument has grown a bit dated in the wake of Neil Patrick Harris, it can be evoked, as in the queer case of Anderson Cooper. It’s no big secret that Cooper’s dating a man. Some people, however, insist he should take the next step out of the closet. Kathy Griffin recently argued against outing him because he goes to third world countries that aren’t always hospitable to the gays. That’s a valid point, yes, and one that I have made in the past. Whether or not it’s right remains open to debate. It does, however, bring up another, far more pressing question: does being gay have to come first?
...

There was a time when I definitely would have said that gay people, especially high-profile actors, should come out the closet. I still think that’s true: it’s always wonderful to have strong gay role models, like Neil Patrick Harris or Jane Lynch, and gay people today should constantly be aware of past and present struggles. And thank goodness the Proposition 8 and hate crime battles helped energize a new generation of activists. But as time goes on and I become a little older, though not necessarily wiser, I’m beginning to see that we all have to wear our sexuality in the way that suits us best. Being gay does not have to be the primary part of someone’s personality. In no way am I saying one should hide their gay ways – that’s just cowardly – and fighting for gay rights should be everyone’s concern, but there also comes a time when people need to focus on other parts of themselves, rather than the parts they use in bed.

Yes, actors and other celebrities have a responsibility to set a good example, and, in my opinion, should take advantage of their platform for progressive causes. But to say that celebrities have to come out forces them to make a decision they may not be comfortable with, and that isn’t fair. We may be disappointed that celebrities cop out and stay in the closet, but we should respect their decision, even if it means losing respect for the people themselves.

. CBS came in for a considerable amount of criticism before the game when it refused to sell a commercial during the game to a gay dating Web site, ManCrunch.com. But a gay couple appeared in a spot in the third quarter, for Motorola.

The spot featured Megan Fox in a bathtub wondering what would happen if she was to send a photo of herself out into the world. Among the vignettes of havoc was a scene of two men in a kitchen. One slapped the other in the face and the second man slapped back.

The implication was that Ms. Fox’s naughty pictures could even come between a gay couple. It was a nice moment of inclusion rather than exclusion.

It looks like Chris Pine may be moving onto a new woman after Olivia Munn called it quits on their relationship late last month.

Chris, 29, and his former Carriers co-star Piper Perabo were spotted out together for almost two hours together at L.A.'s Napa Valley Grille, where the two shared a brownie and enjoyed drinks together.

An eyewitness told E!'s Marc Malkin, "They were sitting at a four-seater table on the outdoor patio, but chose to sit right next to each other as opposed to across from each other."

Jake, don't be sad, George made the same mistake and look at him now!

"George Clooney, lauded for starring in the Oscar-nominated Up in the Air and as organizer of the recent Hope for Haiti Now telethon, has also garnered a more dubious distinction: star of the worst movie ever made, according to a British movie magazine.

Empire Magazine has released its tally of terrible films and Hollywood heartthrob Clooney's much maligned portrayal of The Dark Knight in 1997's Batman and Robin rocketed to the top of the list, according to voters' rankings.

Directed by Joel Schumacher, Batman and Robin co-starred Chris O'Donnell as the caped crusader's sidekick Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy.

"Gaining nearly three times as many votes as the next entry, this was a runaway loser," Empire staff wrote.

"From the neon design to the overblown script to the infamous Batnipples, it's become a byword for franchise-killing and bad movie-making."

It's really extrememly annoying that even Jake's gay fans seem to be bothered by him having to "bottom" in that scene. That's why he didn't get a GG nomination, that's why he had to hook up with Reese in order to lessen the rumors, that's why he is so unlucky...
To tell you the truth, if, say, Joaquin Phoenix played the part of Jack, it'd be just as good. He seemed to have great chemistry with Heath in the pics I saw.

You talk as if there is something wrong with bottoming. It's great that BBM showed how beautiful gay sex is in an explicit way and Jake was hot and sexy in it. Also, Jake is not the first actor who bottomed in a scene. Lots of other actors did it. Just to give you an example, Leo DiCaprio did it in Total Eclipse.

I named Leo DiCaprio, not to imply a standard to look up to but because he was the first mainstream A-list actor that came into my mind who played a bottom in a scene. I don't even like him as an actor. I'll give you another examples Christian Bale in Velvet Goldmine and Jude Law in Wilde.

I'll give you another examples Christian Bale in Velvet Goldmine and Jude Law in Wilde.

I think the issue is with men taking a 'female' role in sex. The issue is not limited to a gay prejudice but it's older and related to gender prejudice. It has to do with considering women as second rate. Therefore a men associated to a female role is second rate too.

Dear Ted:
In regard to closeted gay actors, I don't think Hollywood studios, agents, publicists, etc., give the American public enough credit. Of course, it'll be surprising for some to learn that their favorite stars are gay, but after the initial shock, I think most Americans will get over it and continue to watch their films or TV shows. Closeted gay/bi actors hurt the cause for gay rights just as much (perhaps even more!) as right-wing conservatives. These actors have so much power to help change the hearts and minds of the American public. By not being honest about their sexuality, these actors are condoning homophobia and marriage inequality. How could anyone know? We don’t know much about his life, but he was with Jake in Austin in 2007 and stayed at the same hotel Jake is staying at now. Chris in Austin TX is not beyond the realm of possibility. I’m not saying he’s there, though.

Anonymous said...

Chris in Austin TX is not beyond the realm of possibility.

True, but it would be Chris and Jake visiting someone in Austin, TX, not Jake and Chris hanging out in Austin, TX.

Anonymous said...

Oh they know.

They're just trying to find reasons for him to be there besides Austin, and they are saying that because Chris was with him when he was there for Austin's birthday a few years back, and because the three of them know each other from MV, so of course they're all tied at the hips and Chris had to be there this time too. Even when Jake was there around Austin's birthday they didn't talk about that.

By the way, I went back and checked on posts when the biking pictures came out (yes, I'm a bit of a masochist), and only two people mentioned Austin, including Monica, who seems a bit clueless to UV's agenda and list of forbidden topics. And UV of course didn't post any of the pictures even though she usually falls all over herself to get up new ones.

LOL, they're probably popping the champagne as we speak.

Blame it on the ah-ah-ah-alcohol said...

Babblers shouldn't drink alcohol, they might slip and say something about that actor Austin Nichols!

Of course a society writer is going to mention a resident of their town who's an up-and-coming producer/HW person. It was his birthday, apparently, and a celebration/party was in order. Even if the DM/party wasn't Jake's primary reason to be there. He was still at the party; no one is going to splatter all over the news that he was there to see Austin the BF.

I ask Modigliani, a little teasingly, if he's calling himself a Texan now. After all, this is a guy who summered in Martha's Vineyard growing up and counts family friends Jake Gyllenhaal and Mary Steenburgen as part of his film's advisory board.

"I guess I am," he laughs. "There [are] the bumper stickers 'I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could.' I'm sticking around. I came four years ago. I thought I'd just stay for grad school and I'd move on. And I stayed to finish the film. And I love it. I want to stay here and make more films."

Even if Jake went to a party for David, it does not mean that his date was not Austin. Couples go to events together, except of course when they are closeted.

I know they'll never answer, but I'd love to hear the babblers explanation for why, if David was such a good friend of Jake's, and the only reason why he is in Texas, why in the hell did he avoid ATX post-Rome Reeke fest?

Personally I think it's because he didn't want Reeke to crap in Austin's backyard like that, and I do think Jake is loosening up the closet reigns just a smidge.

Babblers can't answer or explain anything - they are happy that they can use David and keep ignoring Austin.

I don't think we can trust that tweet. Barnes after all was the one who told us Jake was in town for ACL, and as we've been told ever since by numerous people, Jake was never there. ;)

Jake at ACL 2007

Wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't know all the rumors, and called up someone to find out why he's there--or indeed Jake's pr put in a call after they realized they couldn't deny he's there.

Anonymous said...

ut wasn't it David's birthdsy or am I missing something?

Jake was staying at a hotel in downtown Austin and was everywhere, I doubt his PR was concerned.

Sounds like he is on his way home, there was a tweet of him a the airport.

It was David's birthday and it looks like Jake used the opportunity to visit him and Austin, and maybe Lance and McBongo.

7:20 AM: ' "I think some see bottoming as derogatory. As being "gayer" or whatever crap." / "That's an old and never-ending gay issue."
I think the issue is with men taking a 'female' role in sex. The issue is not limited to a gay prejudice but it's older and related to gender prejudice. It has to do with considering women as second rate. Therefore a man associated to a female role is second rate too'.

Excellent observation. To add to the discussion, when society resources are limited, a master stroke was to exclude half of population (women and gays) from the path of acquiring them and it was done through organized religion. See Kristof NYTimes

...the abuses arise out of a social context in which women are, often, second-class citizens...that religions have helped shape, and not pushed hard to change. “Women are prevented from playing a full and equal role in many faiths, creating an environment in which violations against women are justified,” former President Jimmy Carter noted in a speech last month...
“The belief that women are inferior human beings in the eyes of God, gives excuses to the brutal husband who beats his wife, the soldier who rapes a woman, the employer who has a lower pay scale for women employees, or parents who decide to abort a female embryo.”
Mr. Carter, who sees religion as one of the “basic causes of the violation of women’s rights”...
We all recognized that if there’s one overarching issue for women it’s the way that religion can be manipulated to subjugate women....
There is of course plenty of fodder, in both the Koran and the Bible, for those who seek a theology of discrimination.
The New Testament quotes St. Paul (I Timothy 2) as saying that women “must be silent.”
Deuteronomy declares that if a woman does not bleed on her wedding night, “the men of her town shall stone her to death.”
An Orthodox Jewish prayer thanks God, “who hast not made me a woman.”
The Koran stipulates that a woman shall inherit less than a man, and that a woman’s testimony counts for half a man’s.
Today, when religious institutions exclude women from their hierarchies and rituals, the inevitable implication is that females are inferior.
...religious groups should stand up for a simple ethical principle: any person’s human rights should be sacred.

"parents who decide to abort a female embryo.”

When China implemented the one child "incentive" ( <<I'll call it that since they are allowed to have more but the govt gives a one-child family advantages) a lot of female infants were left to die since many parents wanted a boy. Anyway, 20 years later the abundant young adult male population found itself in steep competition for marrying the fewer available females. LOL, look who got the power in the long run.

Btw great link and excerpt, 7:22. Tyvm.

IMO equality between men and women is one reason why people are against same sex marriage: it will level the playing field. No more "man and wife," no more of the man proposing i.e. doing the choosing, and no more of the woman wearing an engagement ring but the groom-to-be does not.

destiny said...

I don't think it is the only thing at work, but I agree that lingering issues with how women are treated does tie into homophobia, and what attributes are supposedly more valued in society.

I also think that Jake probably came in for more BBM jokes, etc. because he was the bottom.

Anonymous said...

Which is stupid, because Jack Twist was a role; it wasn't Jake Gyllenhaal.

IMO and it might sound weird or crazy, but I think that's one of the problems with actors being forced into the closet, because the general public can't separate a role from the actor, or realize that what they said on film was written in a script by someone else. People all the time will say stuff like "When Brad Pitt said [whatever] to George Clooney in [whatever movie]...." ~ and they are referring to the characters. But if/when an actor comes out, it works in reverse: the public sees the actor, not the role. Odd. It's a screwed up thing, isn't it.

I wish movie actors were more like stage actors where the audience sees the character. When I see a play I rarely know anything about the actors; when I see a movie I can't help but have flashes of their gossip, history and news go thru my mind.

The only person to blame for Jake being so prominent in the tabloids for the past 3 years is Jake. He willing bearded and willing participated in all of the Reeke photo ops. I would guess that the lack of pics of Jake means that he finally realized that Reeke not only was turning him into a joke, but that all those photo ops overexposed him and overshadowed his acting career. He became known as Reese's boyfriend, dinner and coffee escort, nanny and personal assistant. Jake set out to be known as Mr. Straight and he ended up being Mr. Witherspoon, one of the girls.

If the imams, priests, heads of churches, etc. would say something in favor of treating women equally, there would be a fundamental change in the way men behave, at least in the long run. Especially in some of the populous countries, which are also the most religious.

I guess its safe to say David is one of Jake's best friends. He came to Austin for his 30th birthday during Superbowl weekend. Thats pretty cool. But he forgot to visit me, one of his other best friends.

Jake has alot of best friends, I think I could get away with making him believe I was one of them.

I don't believe that Jake has a kid hidden away, I don't think Jake has the kind of heart that would deny his child.
