Hollywood's Coming Out Guru

An LA Weekly profile of Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman asks a provocative question: is the time ripe for an A-list male actor to come out of the closet? Bragman thinks the answer is yes.

Patrick Range McDonald writes that Bragman, openly gay himself, has helped numerous celebrities and pro athletes with the "tricky and, for decades, risky terrain" of coming out. He currently works with Chaz Bono, whose gender transition from female to male was recently reported on TMZ. He's brought out actor Mitchell Anderson and NBA player John Amaechi. But now, he says, it's time for someone really big. McDonald writes,

"The publicist hasn't brought out an A-list, gay male actor - yet. But Bragman says that day is coming, and after the first superstar decides to reveal himself, a fundamental shift in American acceptance of gay leading men may not be far behind. He's currently working with a famous musician who's still closeted from the public, but who will come out next year. And the manager of one major movie star approached Bragman a year ago and asked about his client's possibly going public, but the actor still refuses to pull the trigger.

"I felt a little frustrated with that superstar," Bragman says in reflection, "because it had to be 'handled.'"

Bragman's frustration aside, Hollywood remains "a surprisingly conservative entity." Stars mobilized for a "No on Prop. 8" campaign, but McDonald says "the big studios and their mostly male chiefs - and the scores of socially liberal men and women who play key roles as casting directors and agents - have together created a kind of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which places enormous pressure on gay, male actors to remain in the closet." Bragman is confident this can change — he even says, "coming out can be used as a marketing tool." And McDonald cites some hopeful statistics — 89% of Americans now believe that gay people should have equal job opportunities, and 72% say they would not change their opinion of an athlete if they found out he was gay.

Still, gay actors face some challenges. Foremost is the fear that, as McDonald writes, "audiences would be uncomfortable seeing a known gay actor like Cheyenne Jackson kissing or fondling Kate Winslet, and box-office earnings would nose-dive." Neil Patrick Harris is famously both out and doing well, but he says that for years, "I wasn't thought of in a sexual way, which is easy when you have big ears and are called Doogie all the time." If someone who was a sex symbol and a "superstar" to boot chose to come out, the response might be different. And the process would be even more complicated if said superstar also had a high-profile heterosexual cover relationship, as it's safe to assume at least a few do.

Then again, the fiction that no one — or almost no one — in Hollywood is gay can't last forever. It's already been much remarked-upon that while straight actors can "play gay" (like Sean Penn in Milk), only a very few gay actors are permitted to "play straight." Given that the entire film industry is based on audiences agreeing to believe for a few hours that someone very famous is actually someone else, this seems obviously ludicrous. And perhaps it's true that if one "superstar" — one with enough clout to get movies made regardless of sexual orientation — actually came out, everyone would have to confront the ridiculousness of Hollywood's straight-washing. Still, when the movie industry can campaign against Prop. 8 one day and enforce a "don't ask, don't tell" policy the next, it's no surprise that no one's clamoring to be the first.

^^I think his movies were mostly very well chosen, Zodiac included. It's since Rendition with that bad karma of a woman that everything went downhill.

I don't get why Jake wanted to break out from indie? Not only JGL also Peter Sarsgaard, Maggie, Michelle, Gosling etc... do mostly indie stuff and are well respected actors. No?

Bad Ted, referring to Reese as a role. :-D

I'm gonna be a Big Movie Stah!

Anonymous said...

Ok Jake!

Anonymous said...

I love when "big" actors do both - big movies AND indie/art movies or theatre.

For example, Hugh Jackman - Wolverine and theatre with just one more actor on the stage.

Anonymous said...

IMO Jake is self-consumed exactly like Reese is. Can you imagine hearing them talk to each other - each chattering all about themselves and what they want and what they feel and what their plans are, with neither one of them listening to the other?!! 2 people in a car having 2 different conversations, lol.

Anonymous said...

5:30 PM - I also don't think Reeke connect emotionally. And from some accounts (including Ted) both are pretty egocentric people. So your scenario maybe isn't so far-fetched.

Anonymous said...

There is a big difference - unlike the chin, Jake is capable of abstract thinking and interested in more than shopping and promoting cheap cosmetics, lol.

It would be too funny if Jake decided to help creating and sell a fragrance too. LOL.

"Ted" at 5:24 why do you always copy letters, stories and articles from WFT and post it here?! Just wondering since you have to go to the sites to get the link anyway. You do it all the time, don't tell me you don't: I added an extra l to the word really in the 2nd letter when I posted it on WFT and here it is in your post.

Why, is there a problem with reposting?

Look at James Franco. He was in "Milk" last year and "Pineapple Express." Won the independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor for "Milk"--won a lot of acclaim for both movies in which he played two vastly different characters. Just finished doing a film with Julia Roberts and just finished doing the lead for a very interesting movie about Allen Ginsberg. And he's in school and he's doing a lot of writing and he's going to do a cameo on General Hospital very soon!

He's not dating Reese (some people say he's bi, while other say he's straight but wants to be a gay icon) and yes ,he did that Spiderman franchise (bu but he seems to be transcending it big time. Who's career is hotter? Franco or Jake?

Anonymous said...

He also just did a very funny cameo on SNL this past weekend.

Does anyone know why DC forum has gone to only registered members? Very few people post there anyway, so why bother.

and just finished doing the lead for a very interesting movie about Allen Ginsberg.

It's a biopic, he plays Ginsberg. Probaly wants an Oscar nom. Best way to get it is to play someone in a biopic.

Franco's career started to go up in his early thirties.

But yes, Franco seems to improve and Jake go downhill.

6:00, IA this isn't Nobel prize stuff. But whoever it is, they are actually waiting for someone else here to do all the work finding, copying and reproducing articles so that they can copy and post them at other sites like Godot, without any credit as to where they found them originally. IMO it's ok and perfectly fine that they repeat the information, that's what it's for. It bugs me however that 1)they're too lazy to copy the article themselves at the source 2)they don't give credit to where they originally found the article, and/or if they copied the entire article from somewhere other than the article itself.

They can find it themselves, and that does NOT mean copying my posts - it means going to the link I provided and copying it from there. Small point I know, but you know what, I always do my own copying/pasting when I post an article. I feel better about it knowing that I did the work. And if it's something unique I found at another site then I will say "found at ... posted by ... " to give whoever it was, credit. Like I said, I feel better knowing I was honest and did the work myself.

Jake should ask Anne to introduce him to Marc Jacobs - he should try to find some high profile gig!

The Daily Mail reported over the weekend that Anne Hathaway was a likely candidate for Marc Jacobs's next ad campaign, since the two are practically best friends and Jacobs needs a new muse now that Victoria Beckham is concentrating on her own clothing line. A rep for Jacobs confirmed that there are no plans for Hathaway to appear in upcoming Marc Jacobs ads.

Some posts over there were deleted at OMG a few days ago for "trolling" I thnk they were just tweets. If they were deleted by the blog owner, than that means the owner of the blog doesn't like them.

SK is on record as not/believing or liking tweets. She backtracked a bit when it looked like she was nuts and posted some but the ones from the other day must have pissed her off.
I can understand her hating the Reeke tweets, but she and others seem to hate the Jake solo tweets too,

They also refuse to believe that Atticus is on set with him, what the hell???

And it's more than a few posters that hate twets there.

Anonymous said...

"I think you just want to attack OMG, as usual."

Telling what happened, how they call people trolls and babblers at the drop of a hat, is attacking?! Let's get something clear: some, not all but quite a few, on OMG are the ones who attack others, especially if they don't use a "regular" name. Wicked herself posted a question that, if posted under her "Wicked" name, would have been answered respectfully. However she used a madeup name and was immediately labeled a babbler and a troll and her question was made fun of. I believe going to a site, like WFT, where the content of the post is the most important, not if my name is recognized or not, and if it isn't I'm automatically a babbler. If that solid reasoning makes me an attacker of OMG then so be it.

Anonymous said...

Also, if a site is against posting Reeke tweets, then the same logic would follow that they would also be against posting anything Reeke.

Anonymous said...

LOL wouldn't you hate being the person on set who has to pick up Atti's poop?!

I wonder if that person will get a LOAD screen credit

IMO they should sell his poop on ebay. I'd buy it!

Anonymous said...

They post mainstream Reeke stuff to make fun of it. The tweets, which most there think are mostly PR (Privately I suspect they think most are true) are a problem for them because they KNOW that a lot of them are true and they always are Reeke, Jake solo or Jake and his dog. No Jake Autin or BT, that's why they hate tweets.

They also hate that Austin is actually working becaue that may have put a crimp in any plans for them in planting fake tweets, can't have Austi showing up on set in NC!!! They can't risk it even though info on the set of OTH has been quiet since all the stalking fsngirls went back to school.

Thank you, 21:02.

I'm pretty certain I know exactly who this bentoutofshape, cross-bearing person is. He/She insists on selective comprehension of what they have seen posted. This person is the same person who is carrying a grudge from like about a year ago over a bad day over at OMG and was upset over a discussion on deletion of certain comments.

I'm the only person over there who has made any comment about Atticus lately. I wondered why we couldn't get a picture of Atticus with Jake but then I figured it was because there just aren't paps over there in Pitts. I have never said I don't believe at all that Atticus is there and I don't recall anyone else totally ruling it out. It does sound like he's definitely there since that Gazette mentiond it, a reliable form of journalism. I'm just wishing for a picture; it's been a long time. And I don't know how many times Special has given her entire outlook on twitters and it is not what this bentoutofshape person is going on about.

Someone needs to get over it, give it a rest, and move on. Hate will grind away at you and give you an ulcer if you don't watch it.

10 to 1 Atticus was banished from Reese's house. Didn't they say he does not get along with her dogs. Whatever the reason, I am glad Jake is spending time with his dog. He's pretty old now in dog years, so who knows how much longer he has.

Anonymous said...

I very much doubt that Jake's dog has spent any considerable time in Reese's house (lucky for him eh!).

And, can the person who keeps going on about how shocking and scandalous it is that people on OMG may re-post a Ted post, or like / dislike tweets, please give it a rest. Don't think any one really gives a monkeys to be honest. People come on to these sites for a few minutes diversion and entertainment, just remember, it really isn't that important.

Quinto is slated to appear at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center’s annual gala on Saturday night, followed by an appearance at a Los Angeles staging of The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later on Sunday. The Star Trek star will join TV actors Pauley Perrette (NCIS) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), and Broadway’s Barrett Foa, among others at the reading of The Laramie Project.

Chelsea Handler will host the center’s gala, which will honor Wanda Sykes and Miss Coco Peru, among others.

Quinto has long been a vocal supporter of gay rights and issues. In September, he appeared alongside Debra Messing and Jason Alexander at a one-night-only benefit stage reading of one-act plays about gay marriage.

These days, "X-Files" fans have to rely on Fox's "Fringe" and Syfy's "Warehouse 13" to get their weird-science fix, but on Friday, Oct. 30, they have an opportunity to hang out with the fans of CBS' math/crime drama "NUMB3RS."

In "Dreamland," written by series creators (and spouses) Cheryl Heuton and Nicolas Falacci and directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal (father of Jake and Maggie), strange, possibly paranormal events at a decommissioned air base culminate in a woman's death.

Ewan McGregor: I 'Quite Like' French Kissing Jim Carrey said...

Ewan McGregor was spotted greeting a man with a kiss yesterday in New York. A friendly kiss.

However, he's not opposed to the more intimate kind. The L.A. Times recently asked McGregor if he thinks America is ready for his prison romance film I Love You Phillip Morris.

Said McGregor: "It seemed to go down very well there at Sundance. It's a love story, an escape movie and a comedy, all about this man who goes to incredible lengths to be with the man he loves. I like it because it's a gay film, which is to say it's a film about two men in love, and I think that's an important element of it. But it's not a film about them being gay. They just happen to be gay. I also got to French kiss Jim Carrey a lot, and I quite like that too."

That film is due out in February.

Michelle was shooting "Meek's Cutoff" in Oregon with Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine).

I love how Variety makes a casual, end-of-article mention that is all alarm bells and whistles for us. In a Paul Dano casting update for the James Mangold project, comes word that Kelly Reichardt is in Oregon currently shooting a period pic that has her re-teaming with Wendy and Lucy's Michelle Williams, and has the filmmaker working with her biggest cast yet additionally working with Dano, Bruce Greenwood (probably suggested by Todd Haynes), Shirley Henderson and Zoe Kazan. We reported that the filmmaker was fleshing out a Western-themed project, so it looks like she'll be well-prepared for working in difficult terrain.

Written by Jon Raymond (who wrote on her previous film and Old Joy), the film's title Meek's Cutoff is based on the tale with perhaps Gerry-like consequences. The year is 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail, and a wagon team of three families has hired the mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a short cut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage. Over the coming days, the emigrants must face the scourges of hunger, thirst, and their own lack of faith in each other's instincts for survival. When a Native American wanderer crosses their path, the emigrants are torn between their trust in a guide who has proven himself unreliable and a man who has always been seen as the natural enemy.

Two dollars says this will be primed and readied for either an In-Competition or Un Certain Regard slot at Cannes next year.

Brian Glaser and Jefferey Katzenberg [Reeke LA basketball photo shoot] are very good guesses. I am serious. But why haven't you mentioned Jerry Bruckheimer.

Yes. Jerry. Bruckheimer.
---

When Katzenberg's wife had twins, the joke was that Jeffrey was thrilled because that meant he only had to fuck her once.

Both Eisner and Katzenberg are at least bi, and given the way their relationship turned toxic at Disney, I've always wondered if they were once a couple. Anyone know?

----
I always thought Katzenberg was gay. I think Katzenberg was Keanu's first experience with the serious casting couch.

Dear Ted:
I'm new to your column—but already addicted! My question is, if you say Ben Affleck is really into family life with Jen Garner (who, like you, I loathe) than why does he look so miserable in every photo op with said family? I'm sure he loves his adorable daughters—but when will he ditch her already?! Also, I saw that there is a connection between Ben and Toothy—please don't tell me Ben is Toothy Tile! He just can't be! Right?
—Lucie

Dear Happy Hubby?:
He's gloomy 'cause look who he's with! You'd be moody, too. But B.A. doesn't have to worry about being Toothy. Just how to get the hell away from tightass Garner.

Meryl Streep:

I was told of a Meryl Streep encounter recently where she was approached by a fan at a café while she was enjoying time with friends and asked for a photo, at which point she very graciously declined and said “I’m sorry, I’m not working right now”.

Question is, when are they working? I mean, when is she ready to sign autographs? Only at premieres?
Chin uses that pharse too when she's in a good mood. When she's being her usual bitch she just sinks her head and ignores everyone.

I don't know if this will interest anyone else like it does me, but Doug Liman, director of the perfect film Go and then a Bourne movie and Mr & Mrs. Smith as well as the upcoming Fair Game about the Valerie Plame scandal, has a blog. I like Liman but haven't loved anything he's done since Go, so why do I care? Because his next flick after Fair Game is that movie about the Moon starring Jake Gyllenhaal. So he's talking that up some too, offering lil' nuggets of wisdom like this after attending a party full of NASA geeks watching that Moon explosion the other week:

"The people at the party did not disappoint, however. Jake Gyllenhaal, the star of my Moon movie, is better looking than any of us there, but he’d still fit right in. I think that we, as audiences, have accepted movies where better-looking people play the real person. For example, Julia Roberts is a lot prettier than Erin Brockovich. (Fair Game was one of these unusual situations where the real Valerie Plame was actually totally hot.) Jake isn’t playing the hardcore scientist of the movie; he’s the mastermind. He is using the hardcore scientist in a way, like I am using the physicist at Columbia to research my movie."

I'm sure the Columbia physicist appreciated that, Doug. Anyway, I'm posting this so I remember this blog exists so I can check back once production on the movie with Jake really starts up. Right now I'm just glad to see the movie's still happening; I hadn't heard anything in ages. Oh, and Doug also shares this fun story regarding Jake:

"So this weekend was the Chilmark Race at Martha’s Vineyard, where I was convinced by Jake Gyllenhaal, who also has a house on the Island, to compete in the front group who compete to do six-minute miles.

... in spite of being such a dilettante runner, I was pretty proud at first because I did manage to leave Jake in the dust at the beginning. Apparently, that had less to do with my running powers and more to do with the fact that someone ran into the back of his shoe and he ran right out of it. It actually went flying over us. I like to think of it as me making him eat my dust. But he did catch up and pass me. "

Yeah, nobody cares about this shit but me. Oh well. Oh and I found this via Gawker, who were chatting about Liman's new post where he admits that directors use the cover of their "process" to sleep on the set and fondle the PAs. Good times.

Anne Hathaway, Neil Patrick Harris join "Rio" said...

Anne Hathaway, Neil Patrick Harris and Rodrigo Santoro are negotiating to lend their voices to "Rio," the next collaboration between Blue Sky Studios, Fox Animation and director Carlos Saldanha, all of whom are riding the $882 million global tsunami of "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs."

"Rio," which follows the adventures of a nerdy macaw who lights out from his small-town Minnesota cage for the exotic Summer Olympic city of Rio de Janeiro, is scheduled for an April 8, 2011, release. Like "Dinosaurs," it will be filmed in 3D digital animation.

Chris Jenkins ("Surf's Up") and Bruce Anderson ("Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!") are producing.

Hathaway and Harris have done animation before. Hathaway voiced the lead role of Red in the Weinstein Co. release "Hoodwinked!" in 2005, and Harris voiced a character in Sony Pictures Animation's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs."

Fox would not confirm casting.

The Avon connection sort of sums up the crappiness of Reeke to me. There seems to be a hierachy of celeb perfume endorsements.

Top of the pack - Keira Knightly / Nicole Kidman with Chanel

Just slightly below - James Franco and Gucci.

Top of the middle range - anyone who shills for Lancome

Bottom of the middle range - anyone who shills for l'Oreal

Bottom of the heap - Avon with good old (g)Reesy and (by default) Jake.

Cheap, unpleasant and tacky - sort of somes the whole set-up to me.

Anonymous said...

"Another Jerry B!"

Pretty sure Jake would find being perved on by an aging director preferable to having to fake date Reese. Even having to endure some 'inappropriate touching' from Jerry B would be more bearable than another coffee run with the poisoned dwarf.

ITA, but I still expect directors and producers to talk about actor's talent, acting abilities, carisma, hard work during preparations, commitment to the project ... not big abs and pretty eyes. Is it just me?

Fair Game said...

Because his next flick after Fair Game is that movie about the Moon starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

"Fair Game" synopsis - Plame's status as a CIA agent was revealed by White House officials allegedly out to discredit her husband after he wrote a 2003 New York Times op-ed piece saying that the Bush administration had manipulated intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the invasion of Iraq.

IMDb comment:

I just saw this, it's good. It was about 2 hours. This was the first ever screening in Minneapolis. The cast and acting were very good. Many people will call this leftist propaganda, my opinion is, it isn't.

Definitely more drama than action, there was barely any action except for one car chase scene that we didn't get to see in it's entirety as the action scenes in the cut we saw weren't finished. There were also some brief shootout scenes in Iraq.

Sean Penn was excellent. Naomi Watts was very good, too. I thought the chemistry between them in this movie was lacking, but i may just be comparing it too much to 21 grams.

The score was forgettable. I was on a panel of people who stayed after the movie to answer questions and not one person on the panel could say anything about the music. One lady didn't even know there was music in the film.

I don't think this film will get an Oscar, but it's still very, very good.

British model Paul Sculfor, Jennifer Aniston’s ex, films a steamy kissing scene with a male actor in Madrid, Spain on Thursday (October 22). After shooting multiple takes of the steamy scene, Paul put his robe back on and casually walked away.

Paul, 38, who has also dated Cameron Diaz, was filming a scene for the Italian film Di Di Hollywood, scheduled to be released next year.
