Neil Patrick Harris used to be an underage doctor on TV. Now he’s another Hollywood first: an out gay actor who can host award shows, play a womanizer, walk the red carpet with his boyfriend, and then get cast in movies as a straight dad. Neat trick.
Coming out is its own kind of theatrical performance: It’s a reveal. For most of show-business history, it’s been more like an exposure — often in the aftermath of a scandal, as with George Michael. But then there was Ellen DeGeneres, whose famous "Yep, I’m Gay" on the cover of Time seemed to presage a new era of openness, an end to the double life. Instead, it hobbled her career until she returned, years later, as a talk-show host. That was twelve years ago, and each year there’s more give in the social fabric, with openly gay newscasters (Rachel Maddow), talk-show hosts (Rosie O’Donnell), singers (Michael Stipe), American Idols (Adam Lambert), comics (Mario Cantone), and actresses (Wanda Sykes, Sara Gilbert, Portia de Rossi, Cynthia Nixon). Even some long-closeted female stars have quietly shifted their status, including Lily Tomlin, Jodie Foster, and, most recently, Kelly McGillis.
Yet there’s one set of performers for whom coming out is still considered a career death sentence: male actors, particularly those who play romantic leads or star in action films. The few who are out — Alan Cumming, Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce, Ian McKellan — are seen as niche performers. Rupert Everett, once a contender for the first Gay Bond, has been relegated to the margins of the industry. When Grey’s Anatomy’s T. R. Knight came out, it underlined his lack of chemistry with his female co-stars. Meanwhile, a retinue of major stars hover in limbo, their relationships haunted by the suspicion that it’s all for show, their performances (onscreen or on talk shows) scrutinized for indicators of some hidden self. The assumption is that they have little choice, since the conventional wisdom hasn’t budged: An out male star can never be a leading man. Straight women won’t be able to fantasize about him; straight men won’t be able to relate.
Harris has violated all these expectations. He staged his own revelation beautifully, with a clear and upbeat statement for People magazine in 2006, an interview with Out, and a good-sport appearance on Howard Stern, in which he shot back "whatever you please, man" when asked whether he was a top or a bottom. The idea all along has been to acknowledge the fact of his sexuality, then change the subject to his talent. Still, there was a kind of alchemy involved. Maybe it was Harris’s easy style of masculinity, at once unthreatening and seductive. Maybe the timing was right, coming after he’d proved he was more than a Trivial Pursuit punch line. Or maybe he’d learned, from his own extended personal coming-out process, how to handle the expectations of a wider audience.
Harris is careful never to complain about stardom. He always adds a caveat explaining that he is very lucky, that he is grateful for every opportunity, that he has learned a lot. But if there’s a strain of early fame that feels like heavenly power — when you’re the most super-popular person in the room and everyone wants you to take them to bed — that’s clearly not what Neil Patrick Harris experienced at 16. Mention Doogie Howser, M.D., the diary-keeping prodigy he played on the show, and Harris’s whole body language changes. He grimaces, and an extra diagonal line on his forehead appears like an arrow pointing far away.
Back in those strange L.A. years, Harris says, he was preoccupied almost entirely by work. It was a distraction that allowed him not to think about dating. "There were gay adults in L.A., and that kind of made me panic a bit?" His voice rises uncertainly with the memory. "Made me a little sweaty in my palms — and uncomfortable. That was just kind of the elephant in the room. Or not the elephant in the room, but the ringing in my ears: that that was some sort of horrible inevitability. And I tried many different angles to head in a different direction. Dating different girls, being the funny, witty guy at the party, to avoid being the sexual being. I wasn’t thought of in a sexual way, which is easy when you have big ears and the neck and are called Doogie all the time. So I just never really contemplated physicalizing any kind of sexual ideas until much, much later."

Jake said...
I'm irresistible!
You are. ;)
1:34 PM, if Jake was so jealous of Heath that he bitched about it like Lainey says, cancelled TV shows and skipped the Golden Globes he probably regrets it now. Or maybe he doesn’t, I don't know. What more is there to say about it?
That Jake was never jealous of Heath because he had no reason for that :)
Jake, how much longer till that autobiography? 30 years? :)
Jack Shamus was the producer that dodged the why Jake didn't attend the GG awards!
Yes 20 other actor's were a "threat" to Jake but they didn't co-star with Jake in BBM.
BTW, if you look at the AA video of Jake sitting the audience, just take a look at Jake's reaction when Clooney is announced as winner: dissapointed and and almost damn liok, and then he claps. Yes he was dissapointed even though he knew Clooney would win but maybe he thought he would win ala Bafta's? Dumb considering they all knew going in Crash was going to win, Naomi and Maggie wee AA members and i'm sure they told him and he passed along the news to the rest.
I'm surprised no one except fans on the Jake Yahoo group picked up his reaction and the fact that Chris was sitting in the same row, that info was picked up on other Jake sites but not his reaction.
He looked like a spoiled brat LOL!
yes because no actor in the history of hollywood has ever looked disappointed at the Oscars when they haven't won. Personally, I don't remember that reaction of Jake at all. But if you say so...
Anne Hathaway went to the Globes even if she wasn't nominated to support James, Diana, Larry, Ang, Heath and Michelle. Kudos to her for it. She was a real class act all through it. Heath said during the Q&A session that Anne really talked to him in the phone scene and that it was cool of her.
I was hoping she'd get rewarded for her wonderful BBM support and she got rewared with the success of RGM. Some years ago her materialistic pov used to annoy me, but all in all she's a good girl. :)
Yes 20 other actor's were a "threat" to Jake but they didn't co-star with Jake in BBM.
Heath was a friend and a colleague who turned BBMt into a big success for both of them. Jarhead was never seriously considered for Oscar nominations. Jake had no reason to be jealous of Heath.
Dumb considering they all knew going in Crash was going to win, Naomi and Maggie wee AA members and i'm sure they told him and he passed along the news to the rest.
Huh? How could they know that Crash was going to win?

The great thing about IHJ is they have all these little moments preserved on video. So I went and took a look. I don't get that sense of disappointment on Jake's face at all at the announcement of GC as winner. I guess if I WANTED to make myself believe it I could. But since I don't, I didn't.
I think Jake had a little hope he'd get the AA since he got the Bafta. I think he was hopeful and maybe a little disappointed when he lost to GC. What I think disappointed him and the rest of the BBM people the most was the BP loss.
Jarhead, a war movie directed by AA winner Sam Mendes was considered major Osacar bait before it was released. Sam and Jake were dissapointed at the response. Over on the goldderby forum a lot of insiders were posting. They said that the real reason why Jake didn't get a GG nom. is because he was getting votes for Jarhed for lead and votes for BBM for supp. and the votes were split, not enough to get a nomination in either catagory. Others also thought that Jake should have been lead in BBM as well and was in the wrong catagory, either way he didn't get enough votes in either catogory.
There were rumblings a few weeks before that Crash was going to beat BM, first reported by Nikki Finke at deadlineholywood. She spoke to members who said that they either didn't see BBM or did and was going to vote for Crash because the Crash producers were really lobbying and sending out DVD's of Crash to member. As members of the academy Naomi and Maggie must have heard the same and why wouldn't they tell Jake and Jake tell the others? It would explain the rather odd seating arrangments f the cast, they weren't even sitting together: Heath and Michele and Busy Phillips inn the front row, Jake two Pa's and Chris in the second row, and Ang Lee, Larry, Diana, etc. scattered. Why weren't they all grouped together like the Crash cast, etc? And the rather surprised look on the faces of LArry and Diana with the her water bottle under her cahir, I guess they didn't think they would win once they heard that BBM wasn't going to win.
The insiders new but was silent, Finke was the only on report it, and Tom O'neill from the LA times the night before. How bummed they must have felt going into that and would explain why they all went to seperate parties, no pics of Jake, Heath, Michele, Lee, Diana or Larry together at the after parites, just seperate, weird.
If Finke knew, Naomi and Maggie knew too.
Jarhead was never seriously considered for Oscar nominations.
It was.
It wasn't.

Not only did critics offer a mixed response to the film, audiences did, too. The picture earned a "B" grade from CinemaScore, which polls opening night moviegoers. A "B" may sound okay, but people tend to be kind in such polls.
In Universal's own exit polling, audiences checked off the "story" and the "military theme" as the top reasons they went to see "Jarhead," followed by supporting actor Jamie Foxx. Lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal did not register.
"Jarhead" will need exceptional longevity through the holidays to snag any major nominations, and even then it will be a herculean task to convince people the picture has any substance. "Jarhead" may intentionally be about aimless troops frustrated by the lack of action in a pointless war, but that doesn't make for compelling cinema.
LA Times
There are pictures of Heath and Diana, they both look like they cried (on ledgersladies.com) and there was a reporter that said that Heath, Michelle, Jake, his sister and her hubby hung out at an after party. There's also a pic of Busy, Michelle, Heath, Maggie and Peter at the pre show.
It wasn't.
I was, before it was released to the audience and critics. After they released it and saw the response, they knew they had very little chance to get nom'd for any major awards.
Jake and Sam had high hopes for the film despite the exit polling. Jake put his name forward as best lead actor for Jarhead and best supp. actor for BBM despite the lukewarm response to Jarhead. This was reported on the goldderby forum by people who knew. It's not uncommon for names to e submitted for consideration for AA despite the reception with critics and audience, they are just widdled dowt to nom.inn each catagory. Jarhead was submitted as best picture as well, as well as Peter and Chri Cooper for best supp., obviously they didn't make the cut.
People didn't realize this since there was no visible campaign.
Jake was actually nominated as best actor for Jarhead on a few critics awards.
I remember the pre-show pic and the Heath and dianan pic but where the hell was everyone else? I think that Ang was truly shocked, canceled a appearence on Leno that was scheduled and flew home.
I think that Ang was truly shocked, canceled a appearence on Leno that was scheduled and flew home.
Aww Ang. :(
I was, before it was released to the audience and critics.
Well, that doesn't count. It's like expecting Oscars for "Brothers" and no one saw the movie.
Don't worry, I'm sure Jake will win the Best Actor award for Princess, sorry, Prince of Persia. All that emoting by Jake, all those searching and ernest expressions, all that dramatic horseback riding and all that hard work trying to be the romantic hero who wants to get a girl. How could the Academy not reward all that hard work. LOL
Everyone knew Crash was going to win BP. One of the Crash actors said everyone in Hollywood is friends with or connected to someone who was in Crash or one of the 100's of producers. So everyone voted for it. The AA's are nothing but a popularity contest. People who get emotionally involved in them really shouldn't.
It does count and it won't stop Sheridan, Jake, Tobey and Natalie from having their names submitted no matter what the audience/critic response is.
K. Knightley had her name submitted for the Duchess last year for instance despite the lacluster reslonse, she and the producers expected critical praise but it didn't happen.
Didn't stop them even thhough she didn't get critic nominations,GG, SAG, etc. Her name didn't get enough votes from the AA memers, the pic did win for best costumes.
Well, that doesn't count. It's like expecting Oscars for "Brothers" and no one saw the movie.
Last year when the movie should have come out, it was listed as possible contender on many award consideration sites, before it was released. People are now more careful to list it, because it was delayed for a year. That's usually not a good sign. We will see how that movie will turn out.
3:17 PM - I hope for Jake that PoP will be an entertaining flick and decent at the box office. If not, we can definitely say that it was one of his worst career decisions.
It does count and it won't stop Sheridan, Jake, Tobey and Natalie from having their names submitted no matter what the audience/critic response is.
Just having their names submitted is meaningless and they know it.
NSFWish
LOL - Gay party
I think Brothers was delayed because it was after the election and people wanted out of Iraq. But the one year wait didn't do the movie any favors. We know have many more soldiers in Afghanistan, the situation is heating up and more American soldiers are dying. The last type if movie I want to see this Dec. is a movie about war, a soldier missing and the consequences of it. It's still bad timing for the movie.
Looks like Brothers was delayed because the movie wasn't finished.

We'll see. I know a guy who's been shown multiple different rough cuts of this film since it was made a year or 2 ago & he still cant make up his mind about it. Great performances apparently, it seems Sheridan cant make up his mind how to finish it. The original version by Blier really is a tough act to follow. Its being test marketed as we speak, and it's still being considered Oscar material. Definitely no laughs, how could there be?

Finke didn't know.
She is well connected and in position to make an educated guess, but she doesn't know.
It's a testament to Jake's lack of popularity these days that most of the discussion yesterday was about ancient history. Who even bothered to read it. On DC eyelashes, all they do is post photos from 3 - 4 years ago. If it were not for the moderator and one or two babblers, the pages would sit for days with no activity. As soon as a reeke photo shows up, it cools off even more. If Jake thinks he can wait until POP is released to earn some fans, he is in for a big shock.
May I ask a question? Is this a PRO Jake blog or an Anti Jake blog?
This is No Kissing Jake's Ass blog :)
Fuck! That's my favorite!
Why do you ask, 4:29 PM?
4:25 Her educated guess was spot on.

Nice interview with Austin. (inspiring some thoughts that are percolating for posts)
You gotta laugh at this:
TDW: Have you thought about getting an official Twitter account?
Nichols: Twitter? What’s twitter? Sounds like a term for a titty twister.
You know if there's a new Twitter account called Purplenurple suspect it's Austin. LOL
TDW: You’re signed on to star in Pedestrian, which is being made by Hilarie Burton’s company, Southern Gothic Productions. What’s it like working with her in a non-OTH capacity?
Nichols: PEDESTRIAN is a great script. And Lincoln Booth is one of those characters that doesn’t come around all that often. Working with Hilarie is a piece of cake. She is sharp and quick and a great leader.
TDW: Tell me more about your character, Lincoln Booth. What attracted you to the role?
Nichols: I can’t really say anything about my character except that something deep inside me started to rumble when I read him. This is either a really good sign or a disaster. We shall see!!!! :)
FYI: Sophia Bush on Craig Ferguson, October 8th
No titty twister for me!
Austin mentions the film 'Humpday' in the interview. I haven’t seen it but I read about the film and the premise is very interesting. Has anyone seen it? It's about two straight guys who are long time best friends and one day they decide to have sex with each other and film it for an amateur art project. The film is about how the decision of having sex affects them and their lives.
Plot Summary for Humpday (2009)
When Andrew unexpectedly shows up on Ben's doorstep late one night, the two old college friends immediately fall into their old dynamic of heterosexual one-upmanship. To save Ben from domestication, Andrew invites Ben to a party at a sex-positive commune. Everyone there plans on making erotic art films for the local amateur porn festival and Andrew wants in. They run out of booze and ideas, save for one: Andrew should have sex with Ben, on camera. It's not gay; it's beyond gay. It's not porn; it's an art project. The next day, they find themselves unable to back down from the dare. And there's nothing standing in their way - except Ben's wife Anna, heterosexuality, and certain mechanical questions.
"Don't be shy 4:38 PM, tell us what you think about Jakey :)"
As an actor, sometimes his voice makes me cringe but he has the "it" factor but he seems to be selecting the wrong parts. I think of him more as an actor who suited for more independent films with unique characters. I think he plays quirky well, its when tries to do the mainstream thing, he sort of loses creditability as an actor.
I mean what handsome actor hasn't done a romantic comedy? Jake did one when he was really young in The Good Girl, but the character he played wasn't the cookie cutter romantic lead. Don't laugh but Bubble Boy was excellent, he played that part well. Donnie Darko, well enough said. I don't think of Jake as an actor anymore but as a star.
His personal life, I am as confused as he seems to be. Sometimes I think he's gay and other times when I see him with Reese and her kids, I think he's straight.
Overall I think Jake has settled or sold out both professionally and personally. But he's awfully cute and sometimes that enough.
Don't laugh but Bubble Boy was excellent, he played that part well.
Laugh?! I adore Bubble Boy and think Jake was excellent in it.
6:01, thanks for sharing. I'll join in the fun. ;)
First time I noticed Jake was in BBM and I instantly became a fan. Then I watched OS, TGG, DD, MM and thought he chose really interesting movies and characters. I think he was really good in OS. After BBM, the only movie I liked was Zodiac. Then he hooked up/started to beard with RW and I got a pretentious vibe from him too, not only from RW. I always thought he was cute, funny and natural. But now I see another side of him, an egoistical, pretentious side, which puts me off. And I think he should have said something publically about Heath or at least reduce the reeking at the time (we all know he can avoid being papped that often when he really wants to). I just found it disrespectful. I wouldn't say I'm as big a fan anymore as I was shortly after BBM, but I still wish him good luck with his films. I think when he chooses the right parts he can deliver a good performance, but as 6:01 said, he seems to choose the wrong and/or uninteresting parts lately. I hope he starts choosing more interesting/better parts again and breaks up/ends the deal (whatever) with RW.
His personal life, I am as confused as he seems to be.
Interesting. I follow the fauxmance with Reese Witherspoon from the start, but don't recall anyone thinking that Jake seems confused.
I don't think of Jake as an actor anymore but as a star.
Aww, Jake Prince of Persia will be happy to read that ;)
he seems to choose the wrong and/or uninteresting parts lately
Only PoP and Untitled Joe Namath Project seem uninteresting. I don't think Jake's projects are uninteresting, the problem is that they don't deliver.
" I don't think Jake's projects are uninteresting, the problem is that they don't deliver."
But is that Jake's fault or the director that doesn't know how to use Jake.
Directing, casting, script, acting ... I can't say who or what was wrong, but I know that Jake can act and that great acting isn't enough for movie's success.

David Hollander
Writer/Director of Personal Effect
Noah Forrest: What’s the next project lined up for you? And in a perfect world, would you rather it be a film or a TV show?
David Hollander: I’m currently the writing show runner of “The Cleaner”. We start filming on Monday and I have a very heavy hand in the writing of all of this year’s episodes.
Also in the works is a film based on the life of Joe Namath for Jake Gyllenhaal to star at Universal. Given the chance, I would love to direct another film. While I love creating and running television shows, there is nothing like being able to work on a film.
http://www.moviecitynews.com/Interviews/questions_hollander.html
I would call doing a mediatative western like "The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" quite risk taking. Same with Inglorius Basterds; there was guarantee it would be a hit, especially since the subject is a fantasy retelling of a gruesome history. Tarantino's last flick bombed badly.
Good directors know Pitt is a good (and underrated) actor.
Brad Pitt - an actor and a movie star. I presume Jake is after the same :)
Brad Pitt is not an actor, he’s a star.
Projects like "The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" make him an actor, too. Same is true for George.
Brad and George are established movie stars/A-list actors. Jake must prove that Brokeback Mountain wasn't just one-hit wonder, that he can give great performances and/or make money. Not a simple task, looks like actors like Josh Hartnett, Orlando or maybe even Ben Affleck failed.
"Interesting. I follow the fauxmance with Reese Witherspoon from the start, but don't recall anyone thinking that Jake seems confused."
I've seen pictures of Jake being flirty with both men and women before and after the big boring romance of the century.
"Brad and George are established movie stars/A-list actors."
And it took awhile for both of them especially George. Batman was not a shining moment for George.
Plenty of gay men flirt with women, some more than straight men. Doesn't mean a thing.
We must remember five important things about Jake's situation right now.
First, he has not been seen in a movie theater in two years.
Second, all of the films he has worked on since the bearding began have been delayed.
Third, there are no more serious, Oscar-worthy projects in his near future after Brothers. Remember the list of serious films he had before? Jarhead, BBM, Rendition, Zodiac, Brothers? We are reaching the end of that string of serious, Oscar-worthy gems. Right now, he is a trolling for semi-rom coms and action features. When Jake said that he didn't want to take himself so seriously, he wasn't suggesting that he doesn't take himself seriously. He was implying that the elite directors no longer take *him* seriously.
Fourth, his beard is an unpopular, manipulative sociopath with more emotional baggage, bitterness and resentment in her than I've seen in years. That's why the elite directors in HW will not touch her with a ten-foot pole. Besides her pull with Disney and hetero-imaging making quality, she has been a total drag on Jake's career, and there are directors and actors out there who *will not* work with Jake if he continues to beard. Period. And there is nothing that Disney or CAA can do about it. Nothing.
Fifth, he hasn't worked in ten months, and he is probably relieved to be working again, especially with a normal, professional like Anne Hathaway, who, by the way, seems to be more interested in the kind of acting that puts you in Oscar contention rather than the kind of acting that puts you on the cover of the national Enquirer or US Weekly. Jake hasn't been around those people for a long time. And he probably knows that Anne just did him a huge favor. Without LAOD, it is quite conceivable that Jake would have *no work* besides the promotion of Brothers until next spring when the promotion of Pop begins. In fact, given his recent history, this scenario is probable.
Jake apparently thought that he'd have more clout after he decided to beard and bagged the Pop deal, but it looks like he actually has less. Now, he's attached to films that no one wants (Namath), scripts that haven't been finished (Moon project) and film deals still in their infancy (Damn Yankees).
The long and short of it is that Jake has very little professional leverage right now. If CAA or Reese tells him to do something sleazy, manipulative or deceptive, he will do it. Beggars can't be choosers.
"September 28, 2009 12:07 AM"
Wow Jake should just give up the acting gig now and get a real job on a reality show.
^^^
Just kidding, I actually agree with some of your statement.
Jake should just give up the acting gig now and get a real job on a reality show.
This one sounds like fun - The Gay Housewives!
Chatham University junior Kayla Hilko was waiting to put her name in for a table at Pamela's Shadyside restaurant recently, when a good-looking man standing ahead of her caught her eye.
"I looked at him and thought, 'Whoa, that guy's kind of cute,' " she said, laughing. "Then he turned to the side, and I said to my friend, 'That's Jake Gyllenhaal!' and she just laughed at me."
Mr. Gyllenhaal, whose accomplishments range from earning an Academy Award nomination for "Brokeback Mountain" as a lovelorn cowhand to singing a wicked parody of a "Dreamgirls" showstopper while hosting "Saturday Night Live," is in town to film the drama "Love and Other Drugs." He's been out and about, so much so that it seems as if everyone -- or their friend -- has spotted the Hollywood star.
From a Peruvian restaurant in Shadyside to a Downtown bar, with Whole Foods in between, Mr. Gyllenhaal isn't shy about sampling life in the 'Burgh. Filming continues in the coming weeks, with one of Mr. Gyllenhaal's "Brokeback" co-stars, Anne Hathaway, due to arrive early next month.
After Miss Hilko and her friend, Rachel Moynihan, finished their late breakfast, she couldn't resist asking the hunky actor to pose for a photo: "I grabbed his arm but not like a stalker ... he was, like, 'Sure.' " Which is how the photo of a smiling Miss Hilko, a smiling Mr. Gyllenhaal and a smiling Josh Gad -- another actor in the film -- ended up as the photo of the day on Chatham University's intranet Web site.
A bunch of ladies at the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill had been talking about recent "Jake Gyllenhaal sightings" around the East End, so Amy Siebert wasn't surprised when she realized the actor walked into her Point Breeze coffee shop. But he left without ordering. "We were really bummed," said Ms. Siebert, who owns Make Your Mark on Reynolds Avenue with her husband, Hemi Braunstein.
Mr. Gyllenhaal is famous, but in this case, not famous enough. Seems Mr. Braunstein was the barista when Mr. Gyllenhaal and two young women entered the cozy restaurant. "He was dressed like a normal guy: T-shirt, jeans, boots," Ms. Siebert said, noting the actor made no attempt at the dark-glasses-and-hat disguise routine.
It was 11:15 a.m., 15 minutes shy of the transition from breakfast to lunch. "It was right before lunch, and we weren't ready yet," said Ms. Siebert, who was shuttling boxes of supplies between her car and the kitchen at the time. "My husband doesn't know a superstar from the next guy. If someone else had been behind the counter, we would have opened up the kitchen. "We hope he comes back. I've heard he is a vegetarian and eats kind of healthy, and that's what we're all about."
Jennifer Rapko, manager of the restaurant La Feria in Shadyside, was on duty Sept. 16 when Mr. Gyllenhaal and "four or five others" arrived for dinner. "Everyone was actually kind of nonchalant," Mrs. Rapko said. "They recognized who he was, but they let him eat."
La Feria is above Pamela's Shadyside location and shares the same owners. They also see their fair share of celebrity diners, "although I don't want to say it's an everyday occurrence ... depends on the movie," Mrs. Rapko said. "When they were doing 'Wonder Boys,' Robert Downey Jr. was upstairs and downstairs quite often."
Jake Gyllenhaal winning over the 'Burgh
I've seen pictures of Jake being flirty with both men and women before and after the big boring romance of the century.
What are you saying / suggesting?
dontwantpopcorn: YES! I FINALLY GET TO SEE JAKE GYLLENHAAL PUT HIS HAND DOWN HIS PANTS

Location - Omaha
Jake seems to be working the 'Burgh! At least the people there will know who he is (hopefully) because where I live, when you say "Jake Gyllenhaal", what you get is "Who??"
5:21 AM,
I hope you carry Jake Gyllenhaal portfolio with you at all times, always prepared to spread the word and Jake love :)
The long and short of it is that Jake has very little professional leverage right now. If CAA or Reese tells him to do something sleazy, manipulative or deceptive, he will do it. Beggars can't be choosers.
Jake isn't dumb. He knows that reeking is good for his straight image and bad for everything else. Taking Reese's "advice" is the last thing he would do.

Here’s the latest entry into the celebrity doll house: the fine folks at Lego have decided to make an action figure of Jake Gyllenhaal in the upcoming movie “Prince of Persia.” But, um, didn’t they forget something? And by that, I mean his insane hotness. Couldn’t they have at least given us a set of more chiseled abs or some seriously brooding eyes? Hopefully, if they ever decide to make a figure of Jake in “Donnie Darko” or “Brokeback Mountain,” they’ll go for a more true-to-life approach.

9:06AM: Anne isn't due on set until early October. It sounds like he is the lead/main character in this movie.
Duh!
Yes, Jake is definitely the lead/main character in this movie:
The new film directed by Edward Zwick will be Love and Other Drugs, based off of a non-fiction book adaptation called “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman.

Well, October starts on Thursday :)

Josh plays Jake's brother, right?
Jake seems to be working the 'Burgh! At least the people there will know who he is (hopefully)
They are learning!
Jake and his co-star Josh Gad Saturday morning at a pankhouse in Pittsburgh:
A very familiar looking man in a blue beanie was pointed out to me, and I was told “I think that’s Jake Gyllenhaal” (as if I would know who that was…). A few minutes go by, we leave the crowded lobby to stand outside and give newcomers room to put their names on The List. We stand talking about him, and I learn that he’s a famous actor, in a bunch of movies (most of which I haven’t seen). We go back in, and the lady with The List calls out, “Jake?” He hops down from the ledge he was sitting on, says “yes,” excitedly to the man he was with (Josh Gad), and they get seated. It was indeed Jake Gyllenhaal.
9:57/10:10: I was wondering why this sighting wasn't posted here or on OMG since it hit google over the weekend. Well at least surprised it wasn't posted on OMG over the weekend and cross-posted here. SK is slipping, LOL!!
What a fun/cute story, Gad is a pisser and tweets too !
Josh Gad is a pisser
Please explain, what did he do?

My Google didn't report it.
Started shooting "Love and Other Drugs" yesterday. Great first day. Loving Gyllenhaal, Oliver Platt, Zwick, and the rest of the team.

I'm glad that Jake is becoming human again. Straight, gay, or bi he is a lot nicer without Reese.
Seems so, yeah.
Looks like Reese's "ring on the left-hand ring finger = Reeke is engaged" stunt didn't impress anyone.
"They are" and "they aren't engaged" was reported by some less popular gossip sites, major (gossip) media ignored it.
i'm gonna be watching this film with my pants down my ankles
*cough*
Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman, starring together in the police drama A Steady Rain on Broadway, interrupted their show on Wednesday twice when a cell phone went off in the audience, asking the audience member to shut it off.
On the other hand, how bout the video camera (with zoom) that caught the whole episode?
Watch...
Towleroad
I would love to see Jake in a play like this. Towleroad comment:
"I saw "A Steady Rain" Saturday night, and the show is essentially what you see in the video—just Craig and Jackman alone on the stage recounting a gripping tale for 90 minutes. The whole story depends on what images the the two actors are able to conjure inside audience members' heads.
A cell phone ring or camera flash is annoying, distracting, and unacceptable during any theatrical performance. But during a show this intense it's really unforgivable. Before the show, ushers even go up and down the aisles reminding anyone who's using a cell phone to be sure and turn it off.
The play and production are excellent BTW."
Anne and bf
I don't like her jeans.
"They are" and "they aren't engaged" was reported by some less popular gossip sites, major (gossip) media ignored it."
The only popular gossip show to talk about it was Access Hollywood. Any online gossip sites that ran it got pretty negative comments-they pretty much all called Reese out for pulling an attempt to get some attention and that if it was a real engagement ring it was a chintzy one. It is nice to read reports about a friendly, socialble and relaxed Jake. To bad all that will end as soon
as the Chin makes her first visit.
Anne Hathaway wore these Bloch patent ballet flats with trendy destroyed skinny jeans.
Those jeans really look destroyed, lol.
To bad all that will end as soon as the Chin makes her first visit.
The chin will visit and go away, she can't spoil everyone's fun.
To bad all that will end as soon

Probably, but why is that? Some people on ONTD mentioned that Jake seems to adopt the personality of the woman he is (in his case maybe beards) with, like Brad Pitt. Are sagattarius men so easy to manipulate and influenceable? Seems so!
There was a time where the negative Reeke encounters were predominant. Ignoring fans, acting arrogantly etc. It was even discussed on IHJ by disappointed Gyllenhaalics. Maybe Jake and his PR read it and Jake tries to be nicer and more sociable again?
^^ We also saw Reeke pose with waiters and Reese buy ice cream for the whole crew. I think it was damage control and for image.
What personality trait did Jake adopt from the chin?
Jake in Pittsburgh, hanging out with "lesser" stars and crew/PAs:
a smiling Mr. Gyllenhaal and a smiling Josh Gad -- another actor in the film -- ended up as the photo of the day on Chatham University's intranet Web site
when Mr. Gyllenhaal and two young women entered the cozy restaurant
Mr. Gyllenhaal and "four or five others" arrived for dinner
hops down from the ledge he was sitting on, says “yes,” excitedly to the man he was with (Josh Gad)
^^He mostly aint's so nice with fans when he's in her company.
Maybe Jake and his PR read it and Jake tries to be nicer and more sociable again?
Jake didn't change, he is sociable.
Jake has old friends and has ex-colleagues who like him (Mike White, RDJ, Fincher, Jen). He's affectionate with his family, his manager, PA's, Atticus.
Bearding with the bitch can't change that.
Jake in Pittsburgh, hanging out with "lesser" stars and crew/PAs:
Most of the actors in the film are lesser known than Anne and Jake.
Reese hung out with Paul Rudd a lot and he's by far not in her league.
Paul Rudd knows the chin from two previous projects and was the only one who was nice enough to keep her company.
Reese hung out with Paul Rudd a lot and he's by far not in her league.
Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson couldn't waste their time on her, lol.
Most of the actors in the film are lesser known than Anne and Jake.
Doesn't matter. The Good Girl is from 2002, but Mike White and Jake still remember each other.
Probably, but why is that?
While bearding Jake can't ignore beard's wishes, the whole point of being in public is to pretend to be a couple.
The "problem" with Reese is that her PR strategies are to obvious and agressive.
She should try more subtle ways,IDK.Perhaps i'm thinking this way because of the hard scrutiny on her public image in this blog, perhaps people who don't usually give two fucks about analizing her famewhoring don't find Reese's fakeness too over the top at all.
But everything she does seems to be so calculated in such a tacky and coarse manner...ugh.

Reese Witherspoon is ‘Legally’ bland
Reese Witherspoon’s former director has confirmed what unnamed sources have long been buzzing: the “Legally Blonde” star was not a lot of fun to work with.
Robert Luketic, who’s currently directing the movie version of "Dallas," said that he wouldn’t want Witherspoon to be in the flick. When asked if he would cast Witherspoon in “Dallas,” he replied, “Er, no. Moviemaking is supposed to be fun.”
Luketic also directed Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez in "Monster in Law," and despite the latter’s reputation for being a diva, he got along with both. Not so for Witherspoon. “I did not bond with her like I bonded with J-Lo and J-Fo,” Luketic said, according to the London Express. “There is something impenetrable about that woman.”
He claimed that Witherspoon was humorless on the set of the comedy. “She would come out of her trailer and ask: ‘Why are you all laughing?’” he says. “She would want to know why we all had smiles on our faces. Moviemaking to her is a deadly serious business.”

People don't give two fucks about Reese or her famewhoring. She is that funny blonde they saw before + people love comedies = good enough for average moviegoer!
I think Reese should take lessons from Miss Michelle Williams. Now, that's a phony, narcissist cow who can really play the sympathy card without dropping the ball not even once. I was reading again the Vogue interview posted on this site a few days ago. It was a master class of celebrity builded image.I don't know who MW's PR is but I would try to get their number if i were Reese.
If anyone thinks that Reeke, real or fake, will end anytime soon, I doubt it. She can be a bitch to others, but we don't know how she is to Jake in private. No one here knows and can claim to know.
Paul is the only actor left in Philly that is filming except for some extras and supporting cast which names I don't know. Jack finished last Thursday and didn't hang with anyone from the cast in DC and Philly except for a group dinner in DC with Paul, Reese, Brooks and Jake, Owen was a no show. Owen finised filming a few weeks a go and left. He was seen with Paul only and that was becasue it was rumored he had a "relapse" and Paul volunteered to "watch" him. Owen did go out a few times in DC with everyone but I think that's where he had his "relapse".
I think they hurried up and filmed his scenes and told him to get lost before he asked yet another fan where to buy blow (from a twitter, yeah I know but i believe it. It would explain why he avaoided hanging with cast.
She can be a bitch to others, but we don't know how she is to Jake in private.
LMAO, give us a break!
Reese was a bitch and used to put down Ryan in private and in public.
3:57 PM - Ha! ;) The difference is that Ms. Williams is actually really intelligent, Ms. Witherspoon not so much. I'd even say, she's a ditz. Michelle is definitely very image concerned as well.
She can be a bitch to others, but we don't know how she is to Jake in private. No one here knows and can claim to know.
Is that a joke?
I think Reese should take lessons from Miss Michelle Williams.
You can't compare apples and oranges.
She can be a bitch to others, but we don't know how she is to Jake in private. No one here knows and can claim to know.
But we do know.
To be fair, It doesn't seem Jake is a walk on the park either...
What do you mean by "to be fair"? Jake is supporting the beard 100%, what else could she ask for?
nothing,4:22 PM, chill out! I'm just saying that i'm sure Chin is a pain in the ass but i would rather not be near Jake when his cafeine is low. The guy seems like a cyclotimic kind a person, that's all.
My believe is that if Chin can be bitchy, Jake can fight her back on bitchiness without a problem ;)
Justine: Holden - calm down! Alright?
Holden: I can't calm down! Easy if I was a hooker like you then I'd calm down all over town!
What's cyclotimic kind a person?
"The difference is that Ms. Williams is actually really intelligent, Ms. Witherspoon not so much"
Actually, I think Reese is far more intelligent than Michele. After all, Reese DID get to marry Ryan and their relationship lasted more than a sigh. I think Reese is a major bitch, but she has street smarts ;D Michelle can only "seem" smart by quoting solemn phrases from corny authors.Anyway,i can't stand either of those phony witches.
Actually, I think Reese is far more intelligent than Michele. After all, Reese DID get to marry Ryan and their relationship lasted more than a sigh.
Well, that's true.
After all, Reese DID get to marry Ryan and their relationship lasted more than a sigh.
Seven years of bad marriage is a proof of Reese's intelligence? I don't think so.
Reese knows how to keep a man, fake relationship or real. OTOH, Michelle is always bitching about guys breaking her heart and now she is using the typical "single working mom" speech to explain why she was dumped again.
Sorry, but as much i dislike Reese, men can't bullshit her and she always takes the lead. It doesn't mean she is happy, tough but....
R/R & H/M are similar cases.
Both women were more in love with the guy than vice versa. Both, presumably, trapped the guys by getting pregnant. Ryan did the "right" thing and married Reese and it lasted 7 years after all. Heath didn't even bother to marry Michelle and left her when their kid wasn't even two.
Proves again that trapping guys (via pregnancy) who aren't that into you won't work most of the time. ;)
I think Reese is a major bitch, but she has street smarts
Michelle is much smarter and isn't a bitch.
Reese knows how to keep a man, fake relationship or real.
LMAO!
Ryan cheated on her and dumped her for Abbie, and bearding for Jake must be fun!
Sorry, but as much i dislike Reese, men can't bullshit her and she always takes the lead.
So what do you call fucking around while being married to Reese The Bitch?
What makes Michelle smarter than anyone else?
What has she done to be considered "intelligent"?
The bitch can't even keep track of her contraceptive pills!
Is that being smart to you?
5:02 PM, I dislike Reese's phoniness and pretentiousness immensly, but she has never been a serial dater. She's 33 and had only 4 relationships since she was 19. Michelle, who is supposedly so shy, bragged when she was 17 or so that she lost her virginity with 14! She is 29 and dated numerous guys ever since DC. Reese is a nun in comparison. I do believe that Michelle is a tad uncomfortable when promoting movies, but she ain't that shy in RL with men and even the promo shyness is exaggerated IMO. Sometimes I want to shake Michelle and scream at her: Grow up WOMAN!
The bitch can't even keep track of her contraceptive pills!
She ditched them. ;)
She's 33 and had only 4 relationships since she was 19.
4 relationships that you know of.
I do believe that Michelle is a tad uncomfortable when promoting movies, but she ain't that shy in RL with men and even the promo shyness is exaggerated IMO.
Who said Michelle is shy?
Hey,a person can be shy AND have a lot of lovers at the same time! Shy people like to have sex too, you know?? ;))
besides, michelle is not shy. She is clingy and insecure...big difference
"4 relationships that you know of."
Let's see: Marky Mark, Chris O'Donnell (sp?), Ryan and perhaps Jake.
Who said Michelle is shy?
Michelle herself numerous times.
Who said Michelle is shy?

Oh yeah, what a believable source.
pff...
Let's see: Marky Mark, Chris O'Donnell (sp?), Ryan and perhaps Jake.
Jake is her PR business associate.
We don't know what Reese does in her years of free time.
Hey,a person can be shy AND have a lot of lovers at the same time! Shy people like to have sex too, you know?? ;))
True.
I think Michelle is easy to get, Reese isn't.
That said, I actually have nothing against Michelle. I even like her as an actress.
I think Michelle is easy to get, Reese isn't.
No one wants Reese The Bitch Witherspoon.
No one wants Reese The Bitch Witherspoon.
LOL. Maybe that's the reason.
I like Michelle as an actress too :))
I like her in BBM as Alma..
I like her in Incendiary as Alma,I like her in Mammouth as Alma,
I like her in Wendy and Lucy as Alma... She always plays Alma in the movies!! And why shouldn't she? She plays Alma so fucking well after all!
LOL! ;)
5:30 PM, I guess we have to agree to disagree about her acting skills.
^^
but I thought we agreed...
but I thought we agreed...
*ignoring all of your sarcasm*... We do! ;)
What makes Michelle smarter than anyone else?
What has she done to be considered "intelligent"?
Not smarter than anyone else, but smart and intelligent.
Her acting and interviews.
Missing neuro sci because I'm scheduled to work today. ugh! missed jake yet again (Sunday), with Reese in tow :/
twitter
Looks like she paid a visit.
She is smart because she can act???!!! And,by the way, she doesn't exactly shine in interviews. She talks like if she is still on Dawson's creek.
whatever...
She is smart because she can act???!!!
Believe it or not, there are movies that require intelligent actors.
Would You Do Jake Gyllenhaal With These Plastic Abs?
We seriously didn't think Jake Gyllenhaal's campy costume for the upcoming Disney flick Prince of Persia: The Story of Jake's Pecs could get more guffaw-worthy (despite the pretty damn doable bod itself, minus overdone Fabio trappings), but then we saw J.G.'s Lego action figure. Sorry, folks, we don't even get a pint-size superhero-esque action figure of chiseled Gyllen-hon to play with, but this supercute and totally harmless plastic children's toy instead? And it pretty much captures the doability—or lack thereof—of present-day Jakey perfectly.
Oh no?
Try as we might, we just can't drool over a guy who's become as vanilla as the soy latte we always catch him sipping alongside Reese. Manically manicured biceps 'n' abs in themselves don't make a real man, and neither does prancing around in a supersilly getup with an even more impractical piece of arm candy. We so know Gyllen-babe would rather jump back into indie film land and do his less pumped-up, more moody thing. He's so damn good at it, remember?
Is being a big, sweaty H'wood He-Man that important to ya, Jake? 'Cause this Lego figure almost pulls it off better than you have so far.
Please. For the sake of those three of us left who still swoon over ya, Jake, replace the gym and the GF with your true self. It was the hottest thing round there for a while.
Awful Truth
for the sake of those three of us left who still swoon over ya
Oy!
Ted sounds desperate already.
Reeke won't end anytime soon though, I fear. :(
We so know Gyllen-babe would rather jump back into indie film land and do his less pumped-up, more moody thing.
Would he?

And how many women did Ryan sleep with during that marriage, apparently Reese thought more about her reputation in hollywood than her self respect. She couldn't rid of Abby, she stuck.
Someone needs to send a hot guy to Pittsburgh who doesn't know who Jake G is or care. We need Jake to see this guy and fall fast and hard. An intervention is needed now because if the chin is making quiet visits to Pittsburgh, this isn't good. I do believe Jake is fooling himself into a life with that thing, that terrible two faced twat.
This guy needs to be unattainable because Jake seems to want what he can't have like that elusive movie blockbuster.
I believe Reese thought more about her image than anything else. She had a handsome husband so she could sell "I have it all and I'm so classy" crap. Reese is so dull and unattractive that I think this was her best possible choice for (fake) public image.

Postcard from Pittsburgh
September 28, 2009
On Saturday, the first-place Dodgers played the last-place Pirates. At stake for the Dodgers was a chance to clinch a spot in the playoffs for the third time in four years. At stake for the Pirates? Not much, actually, since earlier this year they set an all-time record for the most consecutive losing seasons. (Seventeen, I believe, but who’s counting?)
...
Sitting directly behind us was actor Jake Gyllenhaal of ”Brokeback Mountain” fame, along with some other Hollywood types, including director Edward Zwick. (I later learned that Gyllenhall is filming a movie in Pittsburgh with Anne Hathaway, who, sadly, was not in attendance.)
I am not a starfucker by any stretch of the imagination, but it was hard not to eavesdrop on some of the dialogue unfolding behind us. At one point, one of the guys in Gyllenhall’s entourage noted that the Pirates have the least errors of any team in the National League but are still mired in last place.
“That’s just like life,” Gyllenhall replied. “If you aren’t willing to make mistakes, you’re never going to get anywhere.”
I can’t quit you, Jake!

Disney Prepares To Replace Johnny Depp In 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Franchise
Following the recent departure of Disney studio chief Dick Cook, Johnny Depp admitted to being less enthusiastic about returning to the role of Captain Jack Sparrow for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" ("Pirates" part 4, for those who lost count). And the fans in turn admitted that they'd give up on the franchise without him in it.
That apparently isn't stopping Disney though. According to a tip received by Cinema Blend, the studio is preparing to replace Depp if/when he decides to abandon ship. This may not happen with "On Stranger Tides," as Disney is likely prepared to offer him as much money as it takes to keep him aboard. The actor, who is said to be aware the last two movies "sucked," will definitely not be sticking around for the fifth and sixth installments if the tipster is to be believed.
Is this sad news for us Jack Sparrow lovers? Certainly, but I don't believe it's the end of the world for the "Pirates" franchise. Yes, Jack Sparrow -- and Depp's portrayal of him -- is terrific and hardly replaceable, but there are other wonderful actors out there who could at least steer the series on their own. And anyway, it might actually be refreshing to follow the adventures of another sort of pirate -- a character unlike (and therefore incomparable to) Sparrow.
The plot of "On Stranger Tides," which Geoffrey Rush claims may begin shooting next spring, could easily work as a changing of the guard.
It was widely believed until last week that "Tides"' story will come at least in part from Tim Powers' novel, "On Stranger Tides," which Disney owns the rights to. Powers confirmed last Monday that the fourth movie will "use elements" of the book.
Powers' novel involves a pirate's search for the Fountain of Youth. The story leaves room for a young newcomer, a character who aids the pirates in their search for the mythic location, to come aboard. While this could turn out to be Orlando Bloom's role in the next movie, it seems possible that Disney might use that character instead as a Sparrow replacement. Of course, the studio will need more than just a pretty face if they hope to rival -- and/or replace -- Depp's iconic pirate.
It's easy to be cynical and believe Disney would screw it up by casting someone like Zac Efron or Shia LaBeouf as the new lead. Just as nobody wants to see LaBeouf completely take over the "Indiana Jones" franchise -- yet -- without Harrison Ford, few of these sorts of rising stars are acceptable fill-ins for Depp.
However, I could see the following young men inventing an eccentric character worthy of captaining the series: James Franco; Ryan Gosling; Ben Whishaw; Anton Yelchin; and of course Robert Pattinson (more because of his Dali portrayal in "Little Ashes" than his "Twilight" vampire).

When was the last time that anyone visited Jake on a movie set besides his beard? Any friends? Mom? Sis or Bro-in-law? Uncles or aunts? Loony godmothers?

How often do those types of people visit any actors on set? Yeah not that often. You hate on Jake for the most asinine reasons. This one is right up there.

Aliquippa becomes film set for a day
ALIQUIPPA — The stars were out Monday under a fake rain in Aliquippa.
Jake Gyllenhaal, the Oscar-nominated actor, repeatedly dashed across the soggy asphalt outside the former Aliquippa Hospital, performing a scene for the movie “Love & Other Drugs.”
In a tent off to the side sat his sweetie, Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon, in town just to watch, while Gyllenhaal’s German shepherd, Atticus, patiently waited in a trailer.
Only a handful of spectators witnessed the action on the closed set, though plenty of locals saw an earlier scene, where Gyllenhaal sits in a black Mercedes Benz with driver Oliver Platt (“Dr. Doolittle”) at the wheel. The car was stationary, towed by a trailer behind an Aliquippa police escort, though in the movie it’ll look like they’re cruising down Mill Street.
They made three trips up and down Mill Street, bringing traffic to a crawl. For about 15 minutes, the car and its trailer were stopped on Calvert Street, near the CVS Drug Store, while film crew workers made adjustments. That gave a few onlookers a chance to speak with Gyllenhaal.
“Hey Spider-Man,” said Joey Hages, 19, of Aliquippa, who shook Gyllenhaal’s hand. “Did you like ‘Spider-Man 3’?” Gyllenhaal asked politely, not letting on that it was Tobey Maguire who played that superhero role. Hages’ mom, Jeannie, ran out of her nail salon, with a client in tow, to get a peek at the Hollywood stars. “This is great. I love the action,” she said.
Through luck and a little gumption, Beaver resident Carey Kuhl got to be in a scene with Gyllenhaal. She was allowed on the hospital set because her ’97 Toyota was among the vehicles chosen for the scene. “But then I heard that one of the extras didn’t show up, so I said I’m available,” said Kuhl, a stay-at-home mom whose last movie role, as an extra, was 17 years ago in “Problem Child 2,” when she played a waitress in a scene with John Ritter.
Look for her in “Love & Other Drugs” walking down the sidewalk getting pelted by rain, right before Gyllenhaal rushes by. The film crew had begun setting up cameras and rigging Monday morning shortly before a torrential rain erupted. The scene takes place during a storm, though when it came time to actually start filming — sure enough — the rain stopped.
But they were prepared, using a rented crane and a boom truck to hold aloft large sprinklers that poured water on the actors below. It took numerous takes to complete the scene, and after each rehearsal or unsuccessful attempt, Gyllenhaal had to get his hair touched up by a makeup artist. He often looked into the tent where four onlookers, including a few Aliquippa policemen, reported seeing Witherspoon.
Including set-up time, the scene took more than 90 minutes to finish, though it might last 30 seconds in the movie. “Now I see why films cost so much,” said bystander Eric Stofan of North Fayette Township, whose’86 Olds Cutlass and ’95 Camaro were being used for background shots.
Judging by the stickers placed on license plates Monday, “Love & Other Drugs” is set in the late ’90s. The film is based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir, “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman.” Gyllenhaal plays the salesman, who falls in love with a woman with Parkinson’s disease. That role is played by Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway, who to the dismay of male onlookers Monday was not in Aliquippa.
Filming was only expected to last one day in Aliquippa, before moving to other Pittsburgh-area neighborhoods.

Reese is back in Philly for a few more week so it was just a run down the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Pittsburgh. No grand gesture of flying across the country all though that might be what she's trying to sell.
