The Price of Success

July 13, 2009

At Outfest on Sunday afternoon, three-time Emmy winning and openly gay director Todd Holland told a small audience that he advises young, gay male actors to "stay in the closet." The remark came during a panel at the Directors Guild of America titled, "Taking It to the Streets: LGBT Directors Get Political." Outfest, which pushes the slogan "protecting our past, showcasing our present, nurturing our future," is one of the premiere gay and lesbian film festivals in the United States.

Holland, who was talking as one of the featured panelists, and who once worked as a director on the critically acclaimed HBO sit-com The Larry Sanders Show, explained that it's a necessary career choice if a gay actor wants to succeed in Hollywood.

Fellow panelist and filmmaker Kirby Dick, director of Outrage, a 2009 documentary about gay politicians who stay in the closet to further their political careers, told Holland: "I know where you're coming from, but it's a regressive argument."

Holland, who was legally married before Proposition 8 was passed by California voters in November, responded that he was just being realistic, but Dick, who is heterosexual, believed that if "an A-list actor came out, it would have more impact on the culture than an A-list politician."

No one talked about the personal repercussions of a gay actor succeeding in Hollywood by lying about his sexual orientation to the general public.

Holland's comments underscore a decades old problem in Hollywood, where gay and straight studio executives, agents, and other major players often advise up-and-coming gay, male actors to live in the closet. Rarely, though, has someone like Holland been so public with that advice.

Besides Holland and Dick, "Taking It to the Streets" featured filmmakers Jamie Babbit, Katherine Brooks, Frieda Lee Mock and Charles Herman-Wurmfield, and was billed as a discussion about how gay and lesbian filmmakers "are taking a more active role in creating social and political change."

One audience member, openly gay filmmaker Matthew Mishory, later told Queer Town that Holland's mind set is pervasive throughout the entertainment business.

"This stuff doesn't just extend to actors," says Mishory. "We've been told, as gay filmmakers, not tell queer stories or else we'll get pigeonholed."

Mishory has just finished a film about legendary gay director Derek Jarman called Delphinium. Through that work, Mishory has come to believe that "the promise of the New Queer Cinema of the 1980s and 1990s has not necessarily been delivered."

Before the panelists started their discussion, blogger and lesbian filmmaker J.D. Disalvatore warned Outfest crowds on her blog, The Smoking Cocktail, that several of the filmmakers "were not particularly political, so looking forward to seeing what they pull out of their asses for this one."

A few hours later, the 47-year-old Todd Holland publicly shared his "advice," with young, gay and lesbian filmmakers sitting in the audience. One person who heard the remark, and didn't want to be identified, told Queer Town, "What kind of message is that for an older gay filmmaker to send to young gay filmmakers? It's the kind of thing that will keep people in the closet."

Heath asked Jake to be Matilda's godfather, her only godfather. You don't ask that of a casual acquaintance.

Heath spoke of his friendship with Jake on that blog run by Theresa, and Heath said that he couldn't understand why people assumed that they weren't friends simply because they didn't see photos of them hanging out. He and Jake did manage to function under the radar when they wanted to do so. He and Jake have both mentioned their friendship in interviews after BBM.

I don't understand why some seem to have a problem with the idea that they were friends.

I’m not sure what happened to the white balance setting in the ostrich pic, but the feathers are supposed to be black. Anyways, tt was just minifigs on display, and these were all prototypes, so please keep that in mind when viewing the images.

That's the problem with trolls, you get troll fatique after awhile, so they have to think of new antics, and it taxes their little brains. They aren't capable of original thought, have to parrot what they read online from various places. Trashing Brothers and PoP is getting old now, Heathens have gone, as they were instructed to. Maybe a Babblehunt, yeah, that'll work.

At birth you were blue

T.R. Knight Covers Entertainment Weekly

T.R. Knight takes the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly and explains the gradual “breakdown of communication” between himself and Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. Here’s what the 36-year-old actor shared:

On why he left the hit medical drama:
“My five-year experience proved to me that I could not trust any answer that was given [about my character George]. And with respect, I’m going to leave it at that.”

On Shonda discouraging T.R. from coming out of the closet during the Isaiah Washington controversy:
“I think she was concerned about having my statement come out so close to the [initial] event.” (Shonda denies this: “I said, ‘If you want to come out, that’s awesome.’”

On walking away from a $14 million contract:
“From an outsider’s perspective, I get the [impression that] ‘He’s just a spoiled actor…he doesn’t know how good he has it.’ There are a lot of people who would like to be in my position. But in the end, I need to be fulfilled in my work.”

Check out T.R.’s first official statement about leaving Grey’s here. He’ll be performing on Broadway next year.

Nobody Likes Gwyneth Paltrow

When the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly hit newsstands featuring a highly anticipated promo picture of Iron Man 2, Gwyneth Paltrow was noticeably missing. Page Six says they hear why:

Gwyneth Paltrow was left off the cover of Entertainment Weekly featuring her “Iron Man 2″ co-stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke because, rightly or wrongly, the editors feel any cover with Paltrow is newsstand suicide…

So when Gwyneth Paltrow is on the cover of any magazine, nobody buys it. Maybe that’s because Gwyneth is one of the most self absorbed assholes in Hollywood. When she’s not scoring jobs because her mommy and daddy called in favors, she’s telling the world how much America sucks and how much better she is than everyone. At this point the only way you could get anyone to pick up one of her magazines is if it was on the ground and they needed something to scrape dog crap off their shoe. And even then they’d turn the page to one without her picture because Gwyneth is so disgusting to look at.

Though the reality show Big Brother has been running for a decade in the UK, two men have never had a relationship on the show, until now:

"Charlie Drummond and Rodrigo Lopez broke new barriers when they shared a kiss under the bedsheets. After weeks of practical jokes, rowing and making up, the two openly homosexual housemates gained the distinction of being the show's first gay couple when they passionately embraced. In the double bed they were sharing, Rodrigo leant into Charlie before they embraced for a few minutes yesterday morning. The night before the two had shared a bubble bath, where Charlie shaved Brazilian Rodrigo's legs."

Other clues that its Jake and the Chin: Reeke were buddies (and still are!) during making of Rendition and during promos. AND their characters were kind of on the same political side (in the end). They definitely didn't play lovers in the movie either.

Anonymous said...

Well if Reeke is SS and Toothy (which I think it is) then Ted C is saying that they plan to be together for a long time. Notice he says what if they have a kid together, but doesn't say anything about breaking up soon. I'm agreeing with Ted C, Reeke will be for a long time. It will only end when Reese finds someone else. Enough time has passed that if they broke up even a year from now, people can't say it was a quickie rebound fling, but it wasn't ready for marriage and another kid yet and Reese could play it off as concerned mom, wonderful woman and not divorced loser anymore.

Anonymous said...

By "clandestine," Ted is referring to Austin and Jake in that answer. I know about Grey Gardens, the movie, but I am not sure how it relates to Austin.

I also find it interesting that Ted questions the real nature of Jake and Austin's relationship.

I don't know about Ted's insinuation that it meant Reese is bi or bi-curious. I take it to mean that Reese is just more interested in being around females and not really interested in sex in either type. Kind of like how some straight men would rather hang out with their buddies drinking beer and discussing sports and women. Reese is probably so caught up with herself, that she's asexual, or very very passive in sex. I can't imagine her having authentic sexual fun or being a giving, caring person unless something's in it for her, career-wise. Btw IF she's doing it with a female it's probably her friend who looks just like her, it's probably the biggest part of the attraction, making love with someone who looks and behaves like herself. Narcissists like Reese, that's their turn-on.

Stop Hate Crimes

Just before midnight Thursday, the Senate finally passed the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act as an amendment to the defense authorization bill. This legislation is long overdue, and now we're finally on the verge of getting it signed into law.

But we know our right-wing opponents are going to launch a last-ditch effort to try to stop us. So we can't stop fighting until the bill is sent to President Obama's desk for his signature. Please stand with me and show your support, right now -- so I can share your support with my colleagues on Capitol Hill.

Thank you,

Barbara Boxer

Full Petition Text:

I join Barbara Boxer and urge Congress to send the Hate Crimes bill to President Obama for his signature.

Passing the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act is so important. This legislation adds gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability as protected categories under our hate crimes laws and strengthens the ability of federal, state, and local authorities to investigate and prosecute hate crimes.

The loss that Matthew Shepard's family carries in their hearts will never disappear. But one thing we can do to ease their burden -- and make sure no other families have to go through this -- is enact this bill into law.

We all need to speak out and add our voices to make sure we make the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act the law of the land.

You know Jake is also a freak. He and Reese may be more of a match than you think.

Oh please she was not "involved" with Joaquin. She was nice to him until she didn't need to be and then she acted like a bitch to him and that made him go from crushing on her to hating her. "who's the skanky guy or guys she's boinking?"

My guess is Reese goes for Power Men like producers, directors, execs. Not just anyone who can help her career for now, but someone who can guarantee her a power position after her HW career has faded, which will be very soon in terms of her age. Reese needs to be a Mrs Spielberg or a Mrs Katzenberg or a Mrs Redstone or a Mrs Somebody Big In Hollywood. You can bet your ass she's not going to waste her next marriage on a piddly actor.

Anonymous said...

Reese is in her mid thirties, the best time for a woman sexually. She is wasting her best years, unless she really does have a woman on the side. Ent lawyer said he heard it too and was stunned. Reese does have a woman that has been around for 10 yrs or so. If they are both gay, it explains everything. A match made in heaven. She gets her girls, Jake gets Austin, they both get PR.

SDCC: Terry Gilliam Presents The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus said...

A chipper Terry Gilliam greeted an enthusiastic crowd at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday with clips from his latest film – The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – in tow. The film has gained more notoriety than more recent Gilliam films due to it containing the last performance of the late Heath Ledger. However Gilliam wanted attendees to know that the story of the movie doesn't revolve around Heath's character, Tony, rather the good doctor himself. The panel opened with a brief video retrospective of Gilliam's career up to the new movie. Entitled 'Behind the Mirror,' the piece included scenes from the new film including the first glimpse at all four Tony's – Ledger, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law – the latter trio stepping in after Heath's death.

Gilliam told the audience that he planned to show only the 'boring bits' of the movie at the Con so that when they went to the theater and spent their hard earned money, they would get their money's worth!

Before launching into the clips from the movie, Comic-Con staffers presented Gilliam with the Con's own Inkpot Award for Achievement in Film Arts, which Gilliam joked, due to its sharp metal protrusions, would likely be taken away from him at the airport.

The first clip shown was from the beginning of the film and involved Parnassus in his days as a monk. He is first shown in the present day, riding in the Imaginarium wagon and speaking to his 15-year old daughter Valentina (played by Lily Cole). He tells her of his meeting that day with a person no one ever wants to meet and of a deal he should have never made – exchanging his daughter, once 16, for immortality.

The scene cuts to a hooded rider navigating a snow-swept mountain ridge on horseback approaching Parnassus' monastery. Ironically, Parnassus is telling his monks a story that is eerily similar to what is actually occurring. The door to the monastery open and in walks the masked rider. The monks, who sat surrounding Parnassus, were pushed back by the force of the masked one's entry. The man enters and unmasks to reveal a pencil-mustached, white-headed Mr. Nick (Tom Waits).

After the clip, Gilliam explains to the crowd that the Imaginarium offers up completely different worlds to those that pass through the mirror. The doctor is a man that travels around trying to get people to let their imaginations blossom – a notion he suggests is autobiographical. The idea for Parnassus sprang from that notion and via his first collaboration in over two decades with "Baron Munchausen" co-writer Charles McKeown. The pair knew they wanted a Faustian bargain in the story – a man with a daughter who made a terrible wager with the Devil himself.

SDCC: Terry Gilliam Presents The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus said...

The second clip shown featured a mask-wearing Tony (Ledger) attempting to woo ladies on the streets of London into giving the Imaginarium a go. Gilliam described Tony as chameleon, a silver-tongue slickster who believes in his own babble. Tony – in full carnival-barker mode – lures the socialites to 'put a price on their dreams.'

Verne Troyer joined Gilliam on stage and was thankful to the director for allowing him to play a more serious role. Gilliam said he loved the diminutive Troyer's spirit as an actor.

The last clip shown was a full on head-trip and the first trip shown of a journey through the mirror and into the Imaginarium. Parnassus' daughter – looking like Marie Antoinette – dashes in to the mirror and is follow by a drunkard. The scene inside the mirror looks like a theater production with large cutouts of trees doubling as a forest. He finds Valentina who then proceeds to give him a few good socks on the nose. Enraged, the drunk follows her while spewing threats. In pursuit, he falls face first into the mud. As he laments his 'gorgeous face' the scene cuts back to outside the mirror where the police have arrived and a women is restrained from approaching Parnassus. Back in the mirror, our drunk now finds himself wading knee-deep in empty liquor bottles that seem to fall periodically from the sky. Just as frustration sets in, a creature – looking a lot like a disembodied, green hand swoops in and grabs him up, up, up into the sky which is filled with giant jellyfish – all the while speaking to him in some alien tongue. The creature soon drops him and he tumbles back to the ground landing very near a giant thumbtack that is pointing up.

Gilliam closed the panel with a specially cut trailer for the Con. Included were bits of scene shown previously, but more of Waits as Mr. Nick including the ominous question to Parnassus – "You're probably not a betting man are you?"

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus opens in October.

Gilliam at Comic-Con said...

As expected, the panel couldn’t escape the extra attention from the topic of Heath Ledgers final performance. Gilliam touched on Heath’s involvement early in his discussion of the film explaining how Heath had specifically asked to play the role of Tony. Once cast, Gilliam was hoping to leverage Heath’s fame to get some much needed financing.

Early into the audience questions, a fan asked Gilliam and Verne to share their experiences while working with Heath. Verne shared his thoughts first, explaining how although he only worked with Heath for a short time, he felt as though they were old friends. Verne continued to say it was an “honor and a privilege” to work with Heath. An emotional Gilliam added how Heath was “an exceptional actor and human being.” He ended with sharing how he thought Heath displayed a “wisdom beyond his years” and a how he had a playful and fearless approach to his work.

I'd like to know when and where he was approached, since he was seated in the exclusive Dodger Dugout seats and most likely got VIP celebrity parking and a Dodger VIP guard escort. In Dodger Stadium you can't walk around to different levels, they keep you restricted to where your seats are. Also notice even tho the cropping is tight around Jake in the pic the area behind him is pretty much open and vacant. He also obviously wore a frigging beanie and huge ass sunglasses to camouflage himself while he was going into the stadium. So yeah where and exactly who were these fans who approached him, fellow VIPS in the VIP section? Of course he'll be very nice to THEM, lol.

It was a paid photo to put Jake's face on rags and on the net, so people can start identify him before PoP marketing begins.

I bet that for now on, we'll see him doing more "guy stuff" like sports, hunging out with his male buddies or going out to watch sport games.

I think his PR is going to start showing pics of him drinking beer instead of those sissy lattes or fine wine in posh restaurants.

After all, he is the fucking Prince of Persia, he has swords battles with the bad guys!!!! People can't see him babysitting his beard's kids and carryin shopping bags all the time! That's not something a warrior prince would , IMO

Anonymous said...

I think the word to describe Heath's voice is "posh."

Jake's been photoed at sports events before, so I am not so sure that this is part of any specific marketing. I do think Jake is a bit better known so it might explain the cropping.

I totally agree with your comment about him doing more "guy stuff" 9:32. And it seems to me that with those PoP posters they're trying to emulate the "300" poster smooth glossy look.

Does "true love" exist within the shadows?

I just think of Brad. He didn't stay with Jennifer once he found his "great love" (that's a quote from him).

As for Jake and Austin. I am willing to believe they care for and like each other. They may even love each other. But I don't buy that they are "in love."

I have found that in most relationship one cares more than the other (there are power dynamics in every relationship whether you want to acknowledge it or not). So it is possible that in this case, Austin is the one who cares more, and therfore is willing to do what Jake wants. Jake, therefore, would have the upper hand in this relationship.

I am always a little surprised that people are often so unwilling to deal with issues of power and control (which can take many forms) in relationships and just want to argue about "love."

Anonymous said...

So it is possible that in this case, Austin is the one who cares more, and therfore is willing to do what Jake wants.

It would still be love, wouldn't it?

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't consider that love but a form of emotional dependance.

That's why I don't think this is a love relationship between Jake and Austin. I think they're just fuck buddies, at the most.

Anonymous said...

That's interesting about the descripton of the movie Grey Gardens. So was Ted making a reference to Austin's being hidden away and isolated, or just the nature of his relationship with Jake, or both?

Anonymous said...

Austin doesn't strike me as someone who either hidden away or isolated. If either of them is isolated it seems to be more likely to Jake, trapped in the gilded cage of Disney and Reeke.

Anonymous said...

But the relationship is hidden away. Austin and Jake have family and friends, so they are not isolated in that sense.

Aren't people surprised that there have been no pap pics of Jake and Reese in Philly? Wasn't that the prediction?

How the 'Grey' ladies, and their ilk, became the gays' ladies

If you're a friend of Dorothy, are you duty-bound to idolize Judy Garland? If you're not the marrying kind, are you genetically predisposed to find Joan Crawford a role model? And if you bat for the other team, why should an adaptation of a 34-year-old documentary about two crazy-cat ladies living in a crumbling, raccoon-infested Hamptons pile send shivers of ecstasy up and down your hotblooded homo spine?

"Grey Gardens" is not a gay movie, but there is no question that it has a huge and loyal fan base among those of us who enjoy same-sex stimulus plans. But why?...

Spotting a gay icon is like being double-jointed or riding a unicycle: to laymen it is imperceptible, but to gay men it's like, well, duh.

It's actually pretty simple: gay men of a certain age have an affinity to people who, like them, have faced adversity, and who, like them, have had to fight to become the person they want to be. This adversity could be drugs; it could be a propensity for making the wrong choices in men; it could be fictional adversity, as in the kinds of roles a certain actress always portrays (Joan Crawford in "Mildred Pierce," "Johnny Guitar," etc.). Or it could be a smothering mother like Big Edie. Our icons tend to be vulnerable but strong in the face of adversity. ...

Q: What is the ULTIMATE truth? Does size matter to gay men? I am a single, attractive, educated gay men with a “less than big” thing. – David

A: It all depends on the gay or bisexual man. For some, this is important – and I’m the first to say that no one should have to apologize for whatever they’re attracted to.

Still, I can say with absolute certainty that there are plenty of gay and bisexual men for whom “less is more,” and even more for whom “size” is a complete non-issue. People really are more than the sum total of their parts, and it’s the very foolish person who doesn’t learn this early on. As with everything in life, it’s all about the Big Picture.

But here’s what I’m definitely not saying: “Eventually you’ll find someone who will overlook your flaw.” What I’m saying is that eventually you will find someone who won’t see it as a flaw – who will love and be attracted to you exactly the way you are.

When you find this someone, you should consider spending your life with him.

And for the record? Of all the answers I’ve ever given in this column, I’ve never been more sure of any one than this.

So I'm betting that this weekend will be an over the top Reekefest to make up for the one that didn't get published. Actually, if Reese is S.S., then I don't see any reason for Reeke to ever end. Reese and Jake beard for each other. It's easier to stick with each other than find new beards. And as for Reese staying with a perceived "loser" boyfriend, she was willing to stay with a husband who wasn't exactly setting the world on fire so I don't think that would give her reason to end anything.

And Jake has Austin on the side, so he has no real incentive to discard his arrangement with Reese.

Unless there is some factor I'm missing, I see Jake and Reese being together for years.

SDCC 09: Disney's New PRINCE (of Persia) said...

Posted on OMG by Special K

The Comic-Con International: San Diego Prince of Persia panel was moderated by Nachie Castro, editor of the Disney book group, and attended by Prince of Persia game franchise creator and graphic novel writer, Jordan Mechner, and a team of all-star artists including Cameron Stewart, Bernard Chang, Tommy Lee Edwards and anthology cover artist Todd McFarlane. The anthology will be released next April, and will serve as a prequel to the hotly anticipated Jerry Bruckheimer helmed, Jake Gyllenhaal starring likely-to-be- blockbuster Prince of Persia film coming next Memorial day.

Due to being doubled booked, the panel began with Todd McFarlane. Some process photos of McFarlane as he worked on the cover, revealing the B&W cover art, to full color render were shown.

Castro asked McFarlane if there were any specific thematic points he strove for in the cover image.

McFarlane: “We’re always trying things with licensed stuff. But here we’re really introducing people to the character, so I didn’t want to assume previous knowledge of the character. I decided to show his fearlessness in battle. In covers, you’re trying to tell as much story as you can, and so that was the impetus of the cover design. Instead of, as I said, assuming knowledge of the character or world.”

Castro, worried he was asking too geeky of a question, asked if the blades at the forefront where meant to be evocative of the spike-pits of the early games? McFarlane didn’t want to be too wink-wink nudge nudge, agreed it was a little nod to that. With so many characters, it’s easy to muddy image. McFarlane’s favorite covers are simple, direct character shots. From a distance, clustered character shots can be tough to read. But with the spears, it created the illusion of even more characters.

Mechner enjoyed how it played up the larger than life aspects of the world. As the first exposure to world of these characters, he’s pleased with the image. McFarlane teased at some big images of the movie, and stressed that they’d try and get to some of that same imagery in the comic.

Chang chimed in that he’s biting that image for a scene in his story, and, like any Prince of Persia fan, loves the spike pit, promising some homages.

Castro gave an accout of his own history with the game, starting with what he saw on his Apple 2C 19 years ago to now, showing off old 8-bit graphic slides. This led to a reveal poster of Gyllenhaal as the Prince of Persia himself. Someone joked that the 8-bit image is proably pre-vis film.

The film is out next Memorial Day 2010, and this anthology takes place before the film starts. While it isn’t a direct prequel, with anything like a cliffhanger to movie, it does seek to enrich and expand on the world of the film. It’s part of a new initiative of movie agreements to really play in the world of some Disney film worlds, and if successful, could lead to more, similar ventures.

Mechner expressed his excitement in revisiting the property after years, first on the games, and then on the screenplay. Part of the fun of a new story is the challenge of setting up the world of the movie, as distinct from the games. The Prince of Persia mythology has always changed, and even been contradictory. With this comic, he’s seeking to stake out the territory of the movie, without giving the film away. It’s an intro, but also hopefully something that will stick around with the world after. It includes nods to some of the original games for old fans, too.

McFarlane weighed in that Jerry Bruckhiemer’s producing the movie too. He was clearly looking for his next Pirates of the Carribean, so this is a big production, big budget, one of those kinds of movies. Castro added that it’s going to blow everybody away, even from just prelims.

Anonymous said...

Diving into the book- it’s basically 5 chapters, each by one of these artists set in the world of the movie. Cameron Stewart’s chapter has a story dealing directly with the Prince, and a slide showed some in progress work. Some of the chapters will deal with peripheral characters, however.

Mechner talked about the influences of the property, Scheherazade and The Tales of 1000 Nights, as often "tales within tales." The varied artists played into that. Each story is of someone pulled before a judge, proclaiming their crimes, so this will be telling 5 tales nested within 6th tale, with each person telling their story, defending themselves, akin to Rashamon. Multi-perspective is part of the allure of the GN format, the panelists said, as it allows for unreliable narrators, that can’t be done in film.

McFarlane left for Image’s panel, but before he went, told an annectote: “Jake Glynnhal, for everyone who saw 300, dude’s in fantastic shape. My wife, always a big fan, said he went from handsome to stud. I think divorce papers are in order now. He’s acting the part, but he looks the part. It’s superheroic. He was bigger than his stunt doubles. We’ll have the toys, too!”

The panel went on, Cameron Stewart told the story of his early memories of the game. When he was a kid, he was dying for the game on his birthday. A month before his birthday, he suspected his mom had gotten it for him. He ransacked her bedroom, and she had it! He wanted to play, but it was shrink wrapped, so he used a razor blade, opened the game stealthily, and played it. But then he had to hide it. So he superglued it closed, so she wouldn’t know. The day of Stewart’s birthday, he open it, but had already been playing it, so it ruined his birthday. But he still rememberes it was an awesome game!

Stewart: “That didn’t really help me draw... but it’s a good story. Playing the most recent game gave me the scope and feel I needed for this game. Everything’s huge! I like, in drawing, that there are worlds that extend beyond the picture in the panel. “

Bernard Chang’s tale will be one of Dastan himself, and Tommy Lee Edwards’ is one of Tamina, the princess who runs around with Prince during film. She’s the keeper of the sands.

Chang: “For me, I used to be a Disney Imagineer, with a degree in architecture, so I’m psyched for things like the spike pit. I look forward to the depth of world in this. It's a lot of fun to illustrate the run-through of this rich world and environment."

Tommy Lee Edwards had already started research of old time Persia and Iran, and the film, enjoying how rich in architecture and culture it all is. He added that it’s great to draw something other than New York City.

Edwards stressed that locations were his biggest draw. His favorite part of a project is always the beginning, research stage of the places. He couldn’t stop researching Iran’s history.

He wanted to make sure he did enough research to do the scenery justice. Not just architecture but landscape, with the sands and everything. "It couldn’t be more difficult!" he said. He added that there’s little harder to draw than guys on horses, but that it will be an awesome challenge.

SDCC 09: Disney's New PRINCE (of Persia) said...

Mechner joked that he can’t draw a horse, so he got these guys to. Edwards, who lives in North Carolina, is happy to go look at horses for research, not just Wolverine in Manhattan. It’s a great new challenge.

Castro asked Mechner about the specifics of Prince Dastan, and how he would be different from previous princes?

Jordan Mechner: “The prince has never had a name, it’s always been a mystery. In the Sands of Time game we hint he has a family, but they just turn to sand monsters. For the movie, we had to make him a living person with backstory, but still iconic hero. But in the movie, we’re right there with him. For the GN, we’re playing with a question: who is this guy? Of the five character chapters of this anthology, Dastan is not one of them. He’s referred to, talked about, but a great mystery preserved. We’ll be ready to meet him for real in the movie." At this point the two artists working on the book not at the panel were revealed, with Niko Henrichon painted pages shown. His story will tell of the villains, and where they’re coming from.

David Lopez will tell the tale of the ones who assist the prince, Ceso, how he meets the movie’s traveling companion. We see them in trouble, fitting, as there’s plenty of trouble in the movie.

Here there was a sneak peak at the motion poster for the movie. Castro teased that there would be more motion annoucments to come, but then went on to show an animated runthrough of McFarlane’s poster come to life. All the creators were excited at the possibility of bringing the art to life in new ways.

While the Prince of Persia Anthology is the focus of the team, a partial animatic of each story will be released online. The collection itself will be out in April 2010. This begun the Q&A portion of the panel.

Bernard Chang asked for a show of hands on who has played a Prince of Persia game, and when all were raised, he reiterated how excited he was for the spike pit.

A fan asked Mechner about the orgins of the project as a movie. He said that he’d wanted to write screenplays after his senior year of college, but got a great idea for an Apple 2 game before the platform went away. He got the game done, but never got to his movies.

Someone asked how he’d met with Bruckheimer to get the film started. Mechner had always dreamt of the project as a film, citing the early inspiration of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Pirates of the Carribean as an influence on the Sands of Time game. So after Sands of Time in 2003, he went to LA, with the property shaped as movie pitch, to Disney, who liked the pitch, but only would do it with someone like Bruckheimer. Which, he was told, actually meant Jerry Bruckheimer himself. He pitched to Bruckheimer’s studio, who liked it. They were in business, and only 6 years later, it’s coming out.

A fan asked about any other GNs from Disney. Castro showed, from Disney Press group, Wonderland, formely of Slave Labor Graphics; the world of Alice from the perspective of other characters. He expressed his excitement that the company could work with those on the panel, doing stuff they hadn’t done in comics before.

From Disney Hyperion, another division, Grown Ups are Dumb was shown, from Alexa Kitchen. They also discussed licensed books from BOOM!, like The Incredibles and The Muppet Show, both of which had new ongoings announced at other panels at SDCC.

Someone asked about a Sands of Time movie tie-in game, and the panel insisted there was nothing to announce so far.

SDCC 09: Disney's New PRINCE (of Persia) said...

How much would it be like the video game, a fan asked, and would there be elements of the game's story within?

It will be inspired by the games at large, but mostly the Sands of Time. Expect elements, characters from the game, but it will be its own story. The game was crafted to be a fun playable story, and the movie will have its own narrative, as a big fun summer movie.

Tom Fowler will be drawing the larger framing sequence. The OGN book will be 120 pages, with both HC and paperback editions.

Stewart was attracted to book as it wasn’t “some micro-managed movie thing, with studios making sure it looked just like Jake Gyllnhaal.” When Castro promised free reign for each story and each artist, the project became interesting. There will be real openness to interpretation. The goal is to set this apart from typical adaptations; keep it very tied to the movie, but its own story as well.

Chang expressed his excitement that they’ve got "the real writer writing it!" The source of the franchise at the head for the graphic novel creates a "very rewarding, exciting" experience.

Edwards likes anthologies as a reader, as he feels he's getting his money’s worth. There’s something in there for everybody. There are often scripts for 22 page stories that could be done in 5 pages, but this is the reverse, trying to fit full stories in smaller pagecounts, and a really fun challenge of fitting in as much cool story as they can.

Jordan was thrilled that after the teams of thousands required to make a game, or a movie, with this it’s just he and these guys, with a lightness and freedom that is really different from massive team efforts.

Asked about the :01 Prince of Persia book released last year, he called it “its own thing, not tied to the movie, or game.” He didn’t write it, but this will be its own thing, more directly tied to games and movie’s universe.

With this, Castro closed with the final point, this will be a 120 paperback graphic novel, with a price point of $9.99.

This led to a reveal poster of Gyllenhaal as the Prince of Persia himself.

^^^ PoP Graphic Novel at Comic-Con - Interesting bits:

McFarlane left for Image’s panel, but before he went, told an annectote: “Jake Glynnhal, for everyone who saw 300, dude’s in fantastic shape. My wife, always a big fan, said he went from handsome to stud. I think divorce papers are in order now. He’s acting the part, but he looks the part. It’s superheroic. He was bigger than his stunt doubles. We’ll have the toys, too!”

Here there was a sneak peak at the motion poster for the movie. Castro teased that there would be more motion annoucments to come, but then went on to show an animated runthrough of McFarlane’s poster come to life.

Someone asked how he’d [Mechner] met with Bruckheimer to get the film started.

It [PoP] will be inspired by the games at large, but mostly the Sands of Time. Expect elements, characters from the game, but it will be its own story. The game was crafted to be a fun playable story, and the movie will have its own narrative, as a big fun summer movie.

PoP and Wuthering Heights said...

Gemma Arterton isn't like Keira Knightley.

The 'Quantum of Solace' star hates being constantly compared to other young British actresses because she has her own identity.

She said: "It's always funny. Especially with girls, people always want to put them in little brackets, which they belong in. I don't think I belong in the same bracket as Keira Knightley. I'm completely different, and from a very different background, and we even have different accents. It's just because I'm in 'Prince of Persia' by Jerry Bruckheimer and it's a period film... it's an obvious thing to say. I don't mind. I'm confident in my own ability to not mind being compared to people."

The British beauty recently landed the lead role of Catherine 'Cathy' Earnshaw in 'Wuthering Heights' after a string of Hollywood actresses pulled out. She will star alongside 'Gossip Girl' actor Ed Westwick, who will portray Heathcliff.
