I Dish, Therefore I Am

On March 10, 2005, gossip columnist Ted Casablanca ran an item online under the heading "One Adorable Blind Vice".

The story was similar to numerous blind items Casablanca has run since bringing his column, "The Awful Truth," to E! Online in 1996. He relates a potentially scandalous story, usually with the kinds of revelations a major media gossip columnist would avoid, but disguises the object of his gossip behind a fanciful name like Morgan Mayhem, Furrowed Frank or Toothy Tile.

The ongoing saga of Toothy Tile says a good deal about Internet gossip, its place within the gay community and its function as a moral compass. It also points to some interesting intersections of gossip and gendered performance.

Hollywood gossip, of course, was around long before the Internet. Usually dated from the start of Louella Parsons' syndicated column in 1925, the field has traditionally been female-dominated, with Parsons and her chief rival, Hedda Hopper, engaged in an often-uneasy power struggle with the movie industry. The film studios used them to promote their films and personalities but also dreaded the effect of a personal attack or untimely revelation. One unwritten rule, however, was that the most damaging items — criminal arrests, long-term affairs and homosexuality — were not for publication in any but the least reputable venues. Parsons, Hopper and most of Hollywood may have known that Ramon Novarro was gay, but they weren't about to publish the fact. And if a writer broke the rules — as Bill Robinson did when he wrote about Spencer Tracy's drinking problems and his relationship with Katharine Hepburn in a 1962 issue of Look — the offender was cut off from industry sources.

Even with the decline of the studio system, some restrictions still hold. Unless a star's drug use is impossible for the media to ignore, it's kept out of the gossip columns. And "outing" is still considered off-limits, at least to columnists working in the major media.

For the gay on-line community, gossip serves a variety of purposes. If nothing else, it provides its readers with a sense of titillation as they vicariously enjoy celebrities' lives, even when the object of interest is masked behind the veil of the blind item. Like many on-line discussion boards, gay gossip sites provide their geographically dispersed users with a sense of community.

One element unifying gossip communities is a shared sense of morality. Gay gossip unites the gay and lesbian community by establishing behavioral norms for that community, creating insiders aware of those norms and outsiders unaware of or opposed to them.

In the case of Toothy Tile, the nature of those norms depends on whether one is inside or outside the gay community. Within the world of heteronormativity, Toothy Tile is at fault both for being gay and, more important, for wishing to make a public proclamation of that fact.

Despite the social changes of the past 50 years, the entertainment industry appears to be dealing with sexual orientation by the same standards in operation when Universal Pictures forced Rock Hudson to take a wife to forestall suspicions of homosexuality. The current attitude is described quite simply in one publicity-shy, or rather gay-publicity shy actor's legal complaint against a porn star who had claimed a relationship with him: "While plaintiff believes in the rights of others to follow their own sexual preference, vast numbers of the public throughout the world do not share his view and, believing that he had a homosexual affair and did so during his marriage, they will be less inclined to patronize [his] films, particularly since he tends to play parts calling for heterosexual romance and action adventure. " No doubt, these are the same audiences who would expect the actor to know how to pilot a jet fighter in real life.

Who, then, is thought to be the perpetually closeted Toothy Tile? Consensus gives the honor to Jake Gyllenhaal.

So, what team is Jake playing for? How many beards do you see in this picture? And...well, do I really have to say anything.

So, has anybody seen the trailer of Brothers?? I can't watch it on my computer at work :(

I don't think it's online yet.

I have never understood fascination with taking celebrity pictures. I understand paparazzi, but have no desire to take pictures of some celebrity, not even Jake (but I would love to talk with him).

A real sighting/pic of Jake and the convo goes on about Heath/Michelle/Anne. Is there only 2 commenters here? Don't say you don't care about a pic of Jake in Venice, which is very interesting IMO, the 2nd sighting of him there this week, makes me wonder if he lives in that area now, and that he bores you because if it was a sighting without pics then multitudes of comments would follow arguing if it was real or not or why would he be in Venice, etc. Here you get what you want, a pic, and its like "oh whatever", and that's if you even bother to acknowledge it, LOL.

KICKING THE CRITIC

ALICE HOFFMAN isn't the only author lashing out at a critic over a bad review. After reading a takedown of his "Pleasures and Sorrows of Work" in the New York Times Book Review, Alain de Botton lambasted critic Caleb Crain on Crain's personal blog, writing, "I will hate you till the day I die and wish you nothing but ill will in every career move you make." (De Botton later apologized for his outburst on Twitter, saying, "I am so sorry and ashamed of myself.") Earlier this week, Hoffman tweeted that Roberta Silman, who negatively reviewed her "The Story Sisters" in the Boston Globe, was a "moron" and an "idiot."

Neil Patrick Harris has gone from former child star, to awesomely reinvented actor, to part-time magician, to toast of the town, to TV Land Awards' host, to Tony Awards' host to Emmy Awards' host in such a short amount of time, you might think he's got some seriously salacious blackmail material stored in his vault.

But believing that would diminish the dedication and drive NPH has shown towards becoming a quintuple threat over the last five years. What am I trying to say? Mostly, congratulations to Neil Patrick on the news that he's just agreed to host the 2009 Emmy Awards on Sept. 20!

This is seriously good news after last year's multiple host monstrosity. And judging from his gig at the Tony Awards, Neil Patrick isn't going to go down Hugh Jackman's alley by giving us loads of lavish musical numbers -- his hosting style is more subdued, but just as smart. And it leaves the focus on the winners.

Personally, I'd be fine if NPH was tasked to host every awards show from here on out. Hear that Hugh, you better watch yo' ass!

Caught in the Act!

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, cozying up while brunching at the Blue Duck Tavern inside the Washington, D.C.'s Park Hyatt. The couple ordered up the crab omelette, sausage and veggie side dishes – and also got their caffeine fix with a cappuccino and espresso. While Witherspoon was reading The New York Times at the table, she didn't neglect her boyfriend. "They were cute because they were holding hands a lot," a source says. Before leaving, the couple snapped pictures of the restaurant's open kitchen.

Jake Gyllenhaal & Tobey Maguire: 'Brothers' in Arms

Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman create a potent love triangle in the powerful drama 'Brothers,' in theaters this December, and we have a first look at the preview trailer!

'Brothers' stars Tobey and Jake as siblings Sam and Tommy, two polar opposites: Sam is a steadfast marine and family man about to embark on his fourth tour of duty. Tommy is a drifter just out of jail who gets by on his charm and wit.

When Sam's chopper is shot down in the mountains of Afghanistan and he's believed to be dead, Tommy turns over a new leaf by taking responsibility for Sam's wife, Grace (Portman), and children -- leading to an unexpected attraction. Later, Sam returns home after being captured and tortured by Taliban fighters, shifting the family dynamic into super uncomfortable territory…

Directed by Jim Sheridan ('My Left Foot,' 'In the Name of the Father,' 'In America'), Mare Winningham and Sam Shepard also star in 'Brothers.'

Tobey has the meatier role, looks like that in the trailer, too.

Just watched the trailer. I think this could be good. Just by the nature of his arc, Tobey has the more dramatic role, but it will be interesting to see if Jake pulls off the quieter and less flashy role.

It will also be interesting to see how it compares to the original and if it will stand on its own.

I've always thought the Prison Break cutie was a little boring, both in interviews and on the show. He needs a personality injection, stat. But of course, tons of hidden dirt on W.M. After all, the publicly dull are privately naughty.

Yay for the IoDP and Brothers, both distributed by Lionsgate! :*

Am I the only one who thinks Jake looks a bit too earnest and cow-eyed in the trailer?

Yes. Tobey seems to have that too, as in hundred mile stare. It makes them have a family resemblance. Nat looks fine in her role, to me. If she looks young, maybe the character became became pregnant young. Not farfetched.

Anonymous said...

It is, actually, the ending that makes it an exceptional and moving story - and probably, more true to life.

Oh, no! Incestual brothers and manage a' trois.

Anonymous said...

Tobey may have the more literal battle, but Tommy's had one too - whatever it was that landed him in prison, and being what appears to be a disappointment to his father probably did a number on his self-esteem. He seems to want to make a fresh start in life, and stepping up to do the right thing for his brother's family leads to more, then, it's all taken away again. And Sam's role has changed entirely for him. Going to be a gritty film.

^^I think it's going to be a good film. Departed was even better received than Infernal Affairs. I mean it got a BP Oscar. Maybe Brothers will have the same fate as Departed? I guess we'll see.

Movie Trailer: Jim Sheridan's 'Brothers' said...

The first trailer for Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire has been unveiled and, true to it's Oscar-season release date, exhibits a emotionally powerful film set to draw the attention of the Academy.

In the film, Gyllenhaal plays the black sheep of a snowy Pennsylvania-based family whose bad behavior has left him in jail for three years while Maguire plays the military man older brother done good with Portman as his wife and the mother of their two daughters. When Maguire's character's tour of duty in Afghanistan goes awry and he is presumed killed in action, Gyllenhaal's character - who has just been released from prison - starts to encroach, seemingly to finally give back and support the family. Things are thrown into chaos, however, when Maguire unexpectedly returns.

We previously noted the strong Oscar pedigree of director Sheridan who is a six-time nominee; twice for Best Director, once for Best Picture and three times for Best Adapted or Original Screenplay; which will bode well for this project despite being scribed by David Benioff, recently of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" infamy.

Further, the film is a remake of an award-winning 2004 Danish film by Susanna Bier, was previously set for an August release before being shifted to Oscar-season - evidence of studio confidence - and had reportedly tested strongly for its originally planned December 2008 release before post-production presumably delayed the release. All signs point to good things.

"Brothers" is due out December 4th and is also set to feature music written by U2 especially for it. The trailer features U2's "Bad" from the Unforgettable Fire in the second half and some terrible modern-rock fromage-rock song in the first half. Lighthouse? Everyone comes to us for these kinds of answers and we get that, but you can't pay us to listen to that kind of music.

It is tedious but I'm still interested in how things get placed in the entertainment media. For example a big Reekeing was avoided by Michael Jackson's untimely death.

I heard the cover of US was Kendra's Wedding and a "Hollywood Couples" theme for the entire mag with Jake and Reese's DC huggy, lovey dovey week in review as part of the "A List Couples" section "who's next". There was a couples lookback section potentially to tie into Farrah and Ryan's love story and her death which was going to have a more prominent layout, one article on her recent struggles and one retrospective of her relationship with Ryan O'Neal.

US Reekley still pimps the movie with a picture of Owen and Reese, mentions the ice cream shop in the sightings and in the TOC directs you to go to the website to read more about "Jake and Reese: Happy In Love: Matching outfits! Longing glances!"

LOL that tells me Nanci was pissed that they got bumped. Even funnier there is nothing up on the website yet. Janice Minn is going to have a bad day when this holiday weekend is over.

Brothers seems to have been beautifully done and full of meaning.

Let's hope so! I love smart and meaningful movies.

Anonymous said...

just curious, which one is a smart & meaningful movie to you?

If Jake had put half as much effort into getting Brothers released last year as he's put into bearding, staging photo-ops and planting rumors over the past year, then maybe he would be taken more seriously by Oscar caliber directors like Lee, Eastwood or Fincher. As is stands now, it's going to be a long time before we see Oscar-buzz anywhere near Jake's name after Brothers comes out. A long time.

The closet door really does swings both ways in HW. Bearding with a manipulative, vindictive pr-hound like Reese will make you more attractive to certain studios (like Disney), but it is the kiss of death for other producers, actors and directors. Jake is very lucky that Anne Hathaway used her political capital to help an old friend. Most actresses of her caliber would not have done the same.

Anonymous said...

Monty Python's Life of Brian :)

Anonymous said...

LOL, you have got to e kidding 6:12. Clown face Annie now has political capitol? In which universe? This movie sounds like some indie flick that will probably have a hard time getting distribution like Nailed.

Brothers is getting Oscar buzz because of the cast which includes Jake and Sheridan.

HW could care less about earding and who is bearding, all they cae about is $$$$

"HW could care less about bearding and who is bearding, all they care about is $$$$"

This is total bull*#$&.

Anyone who thinks that bearding does not translate into more ticket sales is nuts. And if you think that Jake, a man with persistent gay rumors, would have gotten PoP, a multimillion dollar franchise produced by one of the hetero-fascistic studios in Hollywood, without bearding, then you are completely insane.

For A-List male actors in HW, heterosexuality is like a bottom-less, cultural ATM machine, and bearding is one of the fastest ways to get cash.

Anonymous said...

HW could care less that Jake is bearding, half of HW is. If he isn't getting the offers he wants it's because he is asking for too much $$$, he isn't right for the part and there are better actors his age up for the same parts.

Jake is a good actor, not great and nothing extrodianry about him with the likes of Franco and Gosling and Gordon-Levitt around.

Anonymous said...

If he isn't getting the offers he wants it's because he is asking for too much $$$, he isn't right for the part and there are better actors his age up for the same parts.

Hollywood isn't THAT simple.

Anonymous said...

Once again, you just don't get it. If you think that Franco, Gosling and Levitt get juicy parts just because they are decent actors, you're crazy. They also get juicy parts because there are few, if any, gay rumors surrounding them!

And if you think that Heath got Batman just because he's a superb actor, then you are nuts. He ran away from Jake as fast as his scrawny legs could take him because he wanted to avoid gay rumors, and they were sticking to Jake like lint. There are plenty of male actors who could have played Joker. Talent was only part of the picture.

There are so many superb actors in Hollywood who don't warrant a glance from HW franchise makers, actors like Chad Allen, who could act Jake, Macguire, LaBoeuf, Gosling and Levitt under the table. Allen never gets a call from Disney. Why? Because he's openly gay. Period. Looks and talent have absolutely nothing - nothing - to do with it.

Do you honestly believe that Jake doesn't get good parts, or had to wait so long to get a franchise deal, just because there are more talented actors available? Do you think that Maguire got Spiderman because he's a brilliant actor? Are you nuts? Do you think that Haydn Christiansen got Star Wars because someone thought that he was going to be the new Sean Penn? Are you insane?

Gay rumors can destroy promising careers in Hollywood, and for A-list male actors who want a franchise, gay rumors can kill all hopes for a starring part.

Stop creating f^*king excuses for the homophobic HW machine. If you are a male actor who wants a franchise, you have to look straight. HW doesn't particularly care how you do it : knock up some woman, purchase a baby, do lots of sports and flex your muscles for the ladies, serially date lots of actresses, contractually arrange to beard, etc.

Take your pick : Jeffrey Katzenberg doesn't care. As long as you het up for the cameras. What did Reese say after her faux-date with Jake at the LA Coliseum? "We had to kiss"?

Looking heterosexual is not the only reason why male actors get franchise deals in HW, but without it, you won't even get a phone call.

Jake gets the hell on my nerves most of the time, but I know that he didn't create these rules. He had a choice : live with the rules and adapt, or completely give up hope of landing a franchise deal.

The choice he made is now obvious, but he's also living with the professional and emotional consequences. Just because Disney and the gossip rags have rewarded Jake for bearding doesn't mean that Fincher, Eastwood and Lee have to.

Stop Calling Yourself White IF You are a Gay Man
You give up being white socially if you are a gay man. Whites no longer consider you a fellow white man; you become a gay man, only.

Stop claiming what is not yours, and those who do not want you. Your privileged status leaves as soon as your sexual orientation status is known.

If Michael Jackson has any lesson at all to teach it is stop humiliating yourselves by claiming that which despises you and being consumed with self hatred.

You do realize that straight whites laugh hysterically at white gay men who try to appear superior when they demand only a white dick will do.

They actually laugh out loud.

There are gay rumores regarding Gosling, Franco and Levitt and hayden.

HW gossip has it that the president of Universal fucked Tobey and that's how he got Spiderman. As a result, Tobey got the franchhise and the head of Universal's daughter, Jennifer.

Not bad for Tobey a wife, 2 kids a franchise and the Tobey/Leo rumors died.

Must be icky for Jennifer though.

Jake is a mediocre actor with mommy issues and a bore,

Leo recommended Tobey for Spiderman *cough*

If you are a male actor who wants a franchise, you have to look straight

"Here's a real story, with the details removed for privacy.

A few years back, while casting a tent pole action blockbuster, the studio in charge discovered that it's lead was a big 'mo. They went to him and said essentially, "Look, we need to know you aren't going to come out. We can get you dates with a girl for public appearances, but you can not possibly come out." He refused and was dropped from the project like a hot potato. Why haven't you heard this story? Because the actor in question wanted a career."

Anonymous said...

Hey 7:31 PM, before you spew your usual crap that Heath ran away from Jake and the gay to avoid homosexual rumors (even though there never were any about him), and to get a big part in a franchise, a part that anyone could've played and probably gotten an Oscar for it too (yeah, right), you might want to know that Nolan said Heath was the only choice for the Joker, when actors like Adrien Brody (Oscar winner), Robin Williams (Oscar winner), Paul Bettany, etc wanted the part.

Heath had many gay friends including Michael Stipe, Todd Haynes etc etc he had no problem appearing in public with. He shared a place with a gay couple for two years when he first started out in Hollywood. Is that what a homophobic man does, as well as take on two gay roles in such a short career? Really?

I guess facts are not important to you, you have your own little tune about Heath and his homophobic ass.

Anonymous said...

The fact that Heath was the actor Nolan wanted the most is irrelevant. What matters is that Nolan would not have wanted him at all if he were openly gay! If you think that Nolan would have handed the second most important part in an incredibly expensive, lucrative franchise film to an openly gay actor, or even one who had tons of persistent gay rumors sticking to him like lint, then you are completely insane. Absolutely nuts.

Heath was replaceable, the Batman franchise is not. Heath was a good actor, but Nolan would have found a way to make $500 million dollars without him. Mike Nolan could have wanted Chad Allen as much as babies want mother's milk, but the studio would not have approved it. If Nolan didn't like it, they'd fire him.

And are you seriously suggesting that Heath's willingness to appear with gay actors is the same as his willingness to spend time with an actor he just pretended to ass-fuck in front of the whole world? Did you see anyone suggesting that Heath was screwing Stipe or Haynes? Get a brain.

Once again, you're ducking and weaving around the fact that openly gay actors do not star in Hollywood franchises! You could have twenty academy awards. If you don't look straight and run away from *persistent* gay rumors in Hollywood, you don't get HW franchises. Period. Get used to it, and stop creating excuses for homophobia in HW.

And stop letting you Heath worship blind you to the fact that Heath followed the same rules to get Batman that Jake followed to get PoP : look straight, or we'll find somebody else for our $200 franchise flick.

These are also *facts*, and whether you like it or not, they aren't going anywhere.

I feel bad for Chad Allen but he can't act. He is really awful. Cringe worthy. But, there are plenty of no talents that get parts. NPH is multi-talented and seems to be a good person. He will always work and be famous and respected, but he would be a superstar if he people thought he was straight.

Anonymous said...

HW gossip has it that the president of Universal fucked Tobey and that's how he got Spiderman. As a result, Tobey got the franchhise and the head of Universal's daughter, Jennifer.

No, that isn't Hollywood gossip. That has never been Hollywood gossip. You just made that up. You know what gave it away? Two things: 1) I'm the person that posted a while back, talking about the relative positions of Jake, Zac, Robert Pattinson etc in Hollywood, and I do have some connections to the business, so I know what rumors were flying around then and that wasn't one of them. 2)Spider-Man is made by SONY Pictures, not Universal, you idiot. Now I dare you to come back and try to cover your mistake by saying that somehow Sony decided to give the lead role in their new franchise to Tobey because he fucked the head of a rival studio. Go ahead, please try it.

Anonymous said...

Ditto on the Chad Allen not being able to act.

And what about Quinto, widely believed to be gay, no beard, and in a huge franchise film.

Joseph Gordon Levitt and Ryan Gosling can act rings around most actors, are willing to take roles in very small films, gritty roles and are not concerned with being A-list.

Jake is an okay actor, limited range, and was unwilling to work hard and wanted to be a big star overnight. He was asking too much around her BBM, and took too long to sign onto another movie as a result. Wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't also being too picky.

Maybe the gay rumors didn't help, but imo Jake was already in trouble.

Anonymous said...

Quinto got the part because he is Nimoy's lovechild. He was very good in it and they gave him the girl, but he isn't Kirk (I thought Pine was the weekest link). I also think Star Trek is a lot different than most franchises. (It's smarter.)

I remember Jake once said that he was impressed by people who took time off and spent time with loved ones and family. I think he is picky and probably asked for to much money. I wish he went for some indie gritty stuff. I think he should play some darker roles.

I used to like Ryan Gosling (he was great in the believer) but he has been in a lot of crap and has been over praised. He reminds me of someones' annoying little brother.

JGL is in little movies and I'm glad. But, he is only known because of his TV career. Otherwise, he would be just some indie actor.

Anonymous said...

Heath had to pretend to be straight? Heath fucked enough women to fill a stadium. He didn't have to prove any straight credentials. He had nothing to dodge. Their just weren't any gay rumors about him.

It's true that any actor could have played the Joker, but it was Heath's PERFORMANCE that powered that movie to 2nd place behind Titanic. Not just any actor could do that. Heath performance was on a whole different level. I can't actually think of any actor that would combine the physicality (this Joker could actually kick ass and take names), intelligence, sexual allure and fierceness need to play this particular version of the Joker, and that includes people like Depp.
