I Dish, Therefore I Am

On March 10, 2005, gossip columnist Ted Casablanca ran an item online under the heading "One Adorable Blind Vice".

The story was similar to numerous blind items Casablanca has run since bringing his column, "The Awful Truth," to E! Online in 1996. He relates a potentially scandalous story, usually with the kinds of revelations a major media gossip columnist would avoid, but disguises the object of his gossip behind a fanciful name like Morgan Mayhem, Furrowed Frank or Toothy Tile.

The ongoing saga of Toothy Tile says a good deal about Internet gossip, its place within the gay community and its function as a moral compass. It also points to some interesting intersections of gossip and gendered performance.

Hollywood gossip, of course, was around long before the Internet. Usually dated from the start of Louella Parsons' syndicated column in 1925, the field has traditionally been female-dominated, with Parsons and her chief rival, Hedda Hopper, engaged in an often-uneasy power struggle with the movie industry. The film studios used them to promote their films and personalities but also dreaded the effect of a personal attack or untimely revelation. One unwritten rule, however, was that the most damaging items — criminal arrests, long-term affairs and homosexuality — were not for publication in any but the least reputable venues. Parsons, Hopper and most of Hollywood may have known that Ramon Novarro was gay, but they weren't about to publish the fact. And if a writer broke the rules — as Bill Robinson did when he wrote about Spencer Tracy's drinking problems and his relationship with Katharine Hepburn in a 1962 issue of Look — the offender was cut off from industry sources.

Even with the decline of the studio system, some restrictions still hold. Unless a star's drug use is impossible for the media to ignore, it's kept out of the gossip columns. And "outing" is still considered off-limits, at least to columnists working in the major media.

For the gay on-line community, gossip serves a variety of purposes. If nothing else, it provides its readers with a sense of titillation as they vicariously enjoy celebrities' lives, even when the object of interest is masked behind the veil of the blind item. Like many on-line discussion boards, gay gossip sites provide their geographically dispersed users with a sense of community.

One element unifying gossip communities is a shared sense of morality. Gay gossip unites the gay and lesbian community by establishing behavioral norms for that community, creating insiders aware of those norms and outsiders unaware of or opposed to them.

In the case of Toothy Tile, the nature of those norms depends on whether one is inside or outside the gay community. Within the world of heteronormativity, Toothy Tile is at fault both for being gay and, more important, for wishing to make a public proclamation of that fact.

Despite the social changes of the past 50 years, the entertainment industry appears to be dealing with sexual orientation by the same standards in operation when Universal Pictures forced Rock Hudson to take a wife to forestall suspicions of homosexuality. The current attitude is described quite simply in one publicity-shy, or rather gay-publicity shy actor's legal complaint against a porn star who had claimed a relationship with him: "While plaintiff believes in the rights of others to follow their own sexual preference, vast numbers of the public throughout the world do not share his view and, believing that he had a homosexual affair and did so during his marriage, they will be less inclined to patronize [his] films, particularly since he tends to play parts calling for heterosexual romance and action adventure. " No doubt, these are the same audiences who would expect the actor to know how to pilot a jet fighter in real life.

Who, then, is thought to be the perpetually closeted Toothy Tile? Consensus gives the honor to Jake Gyllenhaal.

So, what team is Jake playing for? How many beards do you see in this picture? And...well, do I really have to say anything.

MICHAEL MUSTO PLAYS CHAPLAIN FOR SAME-SEX COUPLES

WHETHER it's legal in New York or not, Village Voice columnist Michael Musto is performing at least two same-sex marriage ceremonies tonight at Susanne Bartsch's party at Greenhouse. To celebrate Gay Pride Week, Musto will perform the nuptials for a gay male couple and a lesbian couple as their "chaplain." One straight couple will show their solidarity by swapping vows as well. Carolien Gehrels, deputy mayor of Amsterdam, where gay marriage is legal, is hosting the event.

The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. They are frequently cited as the first instance in American history when people in the homosexual community fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities, and they have become the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

Stonewall Inn said...

We all recognize the Stonewall Inn as the birthplace of the gay civil rights struggle, but what was it like … as a nightspot? Depending on which Stonewall patrons from the 1960s you ask, it was "the best bar at the time," "the music was great," "the bar was dirty, it was unpleasant," and "the jukebox was great, the drag queens controlled that." If you've stopped by 53 Christopher Street recently, this clip from OurScene.TV, with interviews from Stonewall's original patrons, reveals that while everything changes, everything remains the same.

The Advocate takes a look at just how far the gay and lesbian movement has come in the four decades since Stonewall with a collection of 40 of our favorite covers.

It was a 1967 raid -- on the Los Angeles gay bar the Black Cat Tavern -- that inspired the first issue of The Advocate. So two years later, when the police hit New York City’s Stonewall Inn, the magazine’s staff had a little experience under its belt and was ready to report on the ensuing riots (even if the news did have to share cover billing with “18 Groovy Guys”). The Advocate covers in the 40 years since Stonewall are a remarkable reminder of just how far the gay and lesbian movement has come in the past four decades—and how many hits we’ve taken along the way. Liza Minnelli Does Gay Pride in Paris, Remarks on Jackson Death said...

Liza Minnelli (pictured with gay Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe) rode a float at Gay Pride in Paris on Saturday:

"Hundreds of thousands on Saturday marched through Paris and Berlin in flamboyant Gay Pride parades with US showbiz diva and gay icon Liza Minnelli mesmerising crowds in the French capital. Minnelli, who takes to the stage later Saturday in the French capital, a city which also holds fond memories for the star of her film director father, dazzled with a brief dance routine. 'Freedom,' she cried, dancing on a float festooned with multi-coloured balloons in the gay movement's symbolic rainbow hues."

The event falls 40 years after the Stonewall riots, which occurred the week following the death of Minnelli's mother, Judy Garland. At least one Stonewall veteran has claimed that the two events were connected.

Said David Bermudez to the TakeAway: "That night was different because, you see, when we were raided we never fought back. Never ever fought back. And that night I feel that because of Judy Garland's death and all that we just had it. Enough was enough. When the cops started hitting us and harassing us and putting us in paddywagons and all, we just went ahead and fought back, and started hitting back."

Minnelli also talked to CBS' The Early Show about Michael Jackson's death:

"All of us who knew him well really know what he was like. And I'm sure that now the accolades are going, and I'm sure when the autopsy comes, all hell's going to break loose. So, thank God we're celebrating him now. He was just a really splendid man. And a brilliant performer who changed theatrical history. And I will miss him, I cannot tell you."

I had a weird dream about Reese a few nights ago. Whats really weird is that I remember it, in detail, as much now as I did after I woke, and I usually don't. Hope I can explain it ok:

It was where I was recently discovered that I could sing halfway decently, kind of like that Susan Boyle lady (but it was me, I do NOT look like her, lol) and I got a last-minute casual invite like the day before to join in and sing along at a big local performance/tribute that was going to be held and I said, ok, sure. So about 1/2 hour before the show started, 2 production people start giving me info about the finale that I'm doing, and I'm like "What? I thought I was singing in a group as part of a choir" and they say "No, the finale is you doing a solo, don't you have the song words memorized?" And I say "No, no song was given to me and I didn't get rehearsals or anything."

Well, that's when the 2 production people look at each other and since this is a dream I can read their minds (lol). What they are realizing at the same time when they are looking at each other is that Reese did this to me on purpose, to embarrass me and make me look like a fool in front of a huge audience of people. And that I don't even know Reese but that she pulls shit like that to people all the time whether she knows them or not, likes them or not: she butters them up, sets them up and fucks them up.

Anyway, the 2 production people liked me and knew that I was honest and sincere, and it was at that very moment that they had had enough of her tricks. Instead of going along with what was supposed to happen, they helped me. They quickly put the song words and notes on a projector, some laser thing that only I could see, and they projected it upwards into the theater/arena audience so I didn't look like I was reading them off of a teleprompter as I was singing. And I sang beautifully and since I was looking up reading the lasered song words/notes, looking towards the audience in the 2nd/3rd levels, everyone thought I was singing to them. Everyone loved it except for Reese, because she didn't get to make a fool of me. And because of the 2 production people and what they did helping me, the whole crew became aware of the shit that was going on before, caused by Reese, and the cycle was broken.

I'm really surprised I remember that dream. Somehow it must have made an impact or have some truth to it, you know? Odd.

P.S. Jake was nowhere around or in the dream!

THE August issue of Vanity Fair went to press before Michael Jackson died -- otherwise the magazine might not have included an article about Heath Ledger, defending Ledger's drug abuse. Peter Biskind reports that Ledger, who perished in January 2008 of an overdose of prescription drugs, suffered from insomnia. Vocal coach Peter Grennell said Ledger would stay awake night after night rearranging the furniture wherever he was staying. Cinematographer Nicola Pecorini tells Biskind that Ledger only took the job of playing the Joker in "The Dark Knight," for which he won a posthumous Oscar, because he had a pay-or-play deal in which he'd be compensated if he was fired and be able to take a long paid vacation. Ledger's agent, Steven Alexander, said his client "was always hesitant to be in a summer blockbuster with the dolls and action figures . . . he was afraid it would define him and limit his choices."

Not picking on you 6/27 4:36, just wanted to make a point to all you who discussed this. Problem is, you discussed it rationally. Now go into the child-like mind of a typical actor/actress who constantly wants to be the center of attention "me me me look at me" and who loves to pretend to be other people in fantasy worlds and who has the gigantic ego like that of a 5 year old. Jealousy and all the egocentric emotions come into play way more easily with the actors than your average factory/office worker Joe Blow. "Common sense" about exhibiting them? Not likely. At least in the arts there's more leeway and acceptance of emotion, but its oranges and lettuce to think of actors to be the same as us and hide it for the most part.

For Heath fans here who are interested... on "fiveleaves" there is the whole VF article and Mr. Gilliam pretty much confirms what we all suspected, namely that it was Heath who wanted out of the relationship with Michelle and that there indeed was a custody battle.

If Jake was still friends with Heath then it would be understandable he doesn't seek contact with Michelle. Just saying.

The Last of Heath said...

by Vanity Fair, June 29, 2009

Why was Heath Ledger so ambivalent about his own stardom, and what happened at the end of his life? Vanity Fair contributing editor Peter Biskind sheds new light on these difficult-to-answer questions as he writes about the actor’s remarkable talent and untimely death in the August cover story, “The Last of Heath.”

In his article, Biskind explores Ledger’s final movie role, his uncertainty about Hollywood, his devotion to his young daughter, and what happened in the days and weeks leading up to his death as he battled chronic insomnia, pneumonia, and exhaustion. Here are some of the revelations contained in Biskind’s story.

How he cleaned up his act
• Cinematographer Nicola Pecorini, who worked with Ledger on his last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, says Ledger “used to smoke marijuana on a regular basis, like probably 50 percent of Americans.” But after it became an issue, Ledger “went clean as a whistle.” And vocal coach Gerry Grennell, who worked and lived with the actor during the filming of The Dark Knight, says Ledger even stopped drinking: “Heath would happily go to the bar, buy a round of drinks for friends, and come back and have a soda or juice, never once drinking alcohol.”

How chronic insomnia may have led to his death
• Ledger’s use of sleeping medication to combat chronic insomnia at the end of his life was of more concern to Grennell. “I’d say, ‘If you can possibly bear it to stop taking the medications, do, because they don’t seem to be doing you any good.’ He agreed. It is very difficult for me to imagine how close he came to not taking them.”

Ledger would typically spend night after night awake, diverting himself with time killers, Biskind reports, such as re-arranging the furniture in whatever space he happened to be living in at the moment. Grennell coached him in the Alexander Technique, which helped him to sleep for a few hours at a time, but he still struggled.

“Everyone has a different view of how he passed away,” Grennell tells Biskind. “From my perspective, and knowing him as well as I did, and being around him as much as I was, it was a combination of exhaustion, sleeping medication … and perhaps the aftereffects of the flu. I guess his body just stopped breathing.”

How his marriage failed
• Terry Gilliam—Ledger’s friend and mentor, and the director of Doctor Parnassus—agrees with Pecorini that the romance between Ledger and his former wife began to unravel during the Oscar campaign for Brokeback Mountain. “The whole machinery started growing up around them,” Gilliam says. “That was the moment when it changed, when he realized, Uh-oh. We perceive the world differently. He didn’t care about things like those awards.”

According to Pecorini, “Heath was always blaming himself [about the relationship], asking, What did I do wrong?” Adds Gilliam, “Because he’s a much nicer person than I am, he really thought he could do the right thing. He was trying to be decent and graceful, give her whatever she wanted—the house, every fucking thing. But once it started going south, it went very quickly. He was overwhelmed by lawyers, and there were more and more of them, as if they were breeding. I said, ‘This is bullshit. Heath, just end it. Get out—it’s bad. You’ve got to just walk away from it.’ The stakes kept going up. He wouldn’t listen to any of us.”

The Last of Heath said...

As Ledger’s relationship with Williams unraveled, and the pair started dealing with lawyers and custody issues, according to Gilliam, Ledger fell apart. “The thing that really made Heath snap” was legal wrangling over his daughter, Matilda, Gilliam says. “He said, ‘Just fuck all of you! I’m not giving Michelle anything.’???” Recalls another source, when it came to Matilda’s care, “there were definitely heated conversations, and emotions were high.” (Ledger’s lawyer declined to comment on any aspect of the separation or custody dispute.)

His devotion to the job
• The strife in his personal life coincided with the shoot for Gilliam’s Parnassus, but rather than distract him from his work, Gilliam believes it helped him concentrate on the task at hand, he tells Biskind. He appeared one day on set “clearly bloody sick,” Gilliam says. The doctor told him it was the beginning of pneumonia and that he ought to take antibiotics and go home and rest. According to Gilliam, Ledger said, “No way. I’m not going to go home, because I can’t sleep, and I’ll be just thinking about the situation. I’d rather stay here and work.”

Although “he would arrive in the morning completely knackered,” Gilliam says, “by the end of the day he was beaming, glowing with energy. It was like everything was put into the work, because that was the joy; that’s what he loved to do. The words were just pouring out. It was like he was channeling.”

Ledger’s apathy for stardom
• Ledger’s friend and agent, Steven Alexander, tells Biskind that Heath “was always hesitant to be in a summer blockbuster, with the dolls and action figures and everything else that comes with one of those movies. He was afraid it would define him and limit his choices.” According to friends of Ledger’s, one of the reasons he agreed to do Dark Knight was that the unusually long shoot would give him an excuse to turn down other offers.

Alexander tells Biskind that Ledger had a pay-or-play deal on The Dark Knight—meaning he’d get compensated no matter what—so he felt he had the freedom to do whatever he wanted as the Joker. According to Pecorini, Ledger hoped his performance would be so far-out he’d be fired, and thus become the beneficiary of a lengthy, paid vacation.

“He was ready to bust out of the gate, but he didn’t want to step on the gas and become something that he didn’t want to become: a matinee idol,” says Alexander. “He was a private person, and he didn’t want to share his personal history with the press. It just wasn’t up for sale. That’s part of the reason he initially tore down his career. He wasn’t motivated by money or stardom, but by the respect of his peers, and for people to walk out of a movie theater after they’d seen something that he’d worked on and say, ‘Wow, he really disappeared into that character.’ He was striving to become an ‘illusionist,’ as he called it, able to create characters that weren’t there.”

The August issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on July 1 and nationally July 7.

Celebs aren't exactly known to be truth tellers — Toothy Tile continuously lying to himself and every ridiculous excuse Lindsay Lohan's made to get out of pretty much anything are proof enough of that. But Melinda Miscreant is another story. Dame's fibbing 'bout her own flesh 'n' blood, incredibly tacky.

Mel, who somehow still gets TV work despite peaking years ago, is as guilty of desiring followers on her Twitter page as every other Kutcher-like celeb with an online presence.

But that's not the truly heinous part. The despicable side of M.M.'s Internet persona is that she's totally painting a prettier pic of her motherly abilities, and the ones who are totally paying for it are her kids:

M.M. has gotten on enough people's nerves in her recent attention-seeking antics that she's doing whatever she can do to get her former fans to like her again. Instead of her sexuality (hasn't worked in a while), she's focusing on winning Mother of the Year—without really working for it.

Mel is known to tweet that she's at the park with her kids, when in actuality, she's really she's off tanning! So say totally tight M.M. sources who are with the babe while she deceptweets right in front of 'em! She'll totally update her status to say she's with her kids at, say, an ice cream parlor, when really she's at the spa, sans offspring. We're surprised she's putting this much effort into faux-mothering her kids instead of just schlepping them outside for a photo op. At least then your kids would actually see ya sometime.

And we thought the kids' father was the badly behaving one. Hardly. Certainly he has his own parenting problems, but at least he barely tweets a thing, let alone lies.

If Gilliam is true, then she fought Heath (with lawyers) for shared custody. So she wasn't dominated or desperate.

From "A Family's Tale" by Janet Fife-Yeomans:

"In the final week of December of that same year, Michelle joined Heath for Christmas in Australia.
...

It's a famous surfing spot, and the hinterland is full of lush valleys where people go to live alternative lifestyles. It was there that the couple conceived their baby, as Heath later revealed.

"It's very romantic. It's very spiritual," he said of Byron Bay.

Perhaps the similarity in their ages helped Heath and Michelle's relationship to move on so quickly.

"Very early on in our relationship, we talked about having babies together. I always knew I would be a young father," said Heath.

"We just fell very deeply into each other's arms. Our bodies definitely made those decisions for us. I mean, the second you acknowledge (having a child) as a possibility, the body just inevitably hits a switch and it happens."

Heath talked with all his women about babies, even when he was in hight school. Read some of Naomi's interviews where she mentions she talked about having babies with Heath. Then when Naomi was finally ready, Heath all of a sudden wasn't ready to change and settle down to start a family with her. I'm a fan of Heath's but he was good with words. And a player. I don't think Michelle was naive and dind't know that.

Heath introduced all of his gals to his parents. Christina Cauchi, Heather Graham, Naomi Watts, Michelle, Gemma Ward. And after Ward it would have been another one.

If Gilliam is true, then she fought Heath (with lawyers) for shared custody. So she wasn't dominated or desperate.

Not really. Read what Gilliam implies. Michelle was out to hurt Heath because he wanted out of their relationship. If you think that shows a strong woman you haven’t lived enough in this world. Yes, that's desperate, only a desperate woman does that, (and gets pregnant to trap a man).

So Michelle just took Heath at his word :)

I think is very weird how open and candid both H & M were about their relationship and family life, DURING movie promotion, and short later they plaid the card of "private" celebrities who didn't want their lives exposed in the media.

As for T.Gilliam, he is an idiot. He has no right to talk about relationship problems or custody battles, i think he is totally out of line. Howevwer, i don't see any out of the ordinary in what he said. When a couple split, there are issues, is inevitable. It seems Heath tried really hard to be a family man but it he wasn't ready yet.His heart was on it but he just couldn't make it happen.

I believe H/M relationship was good during BBM promotion but when the fun was over and they realized they had to work hard to make their couple work in HW business, then they found out it wasn't so fun after all.

Anonymous said...

Let's just say, Michelle was really dump and irresponsible and I thought back then, it served her right when he dumped her. But it's very sad how it ended for Heath. It never should have happened, just when his career started to kick off. I'm sure he and Michelle would have found a solution regarding custody.

I don't think she was that naive. She fell in love hard, started to get insecure and got herself pregnant. He tried to make it work, but realized they just don't fit and said "bye". She got pissed and made life difficult for him using Matilda. Heath sadly died. End of story.

Most of Heath's old fans who followed him for years and years knew the truth anyway.

The story that Michelle had to leave her one true love, heavy drug addict Heath, to save their child is complete BS. She was desperate to keep him, but I don't think she would have been that desperate to have a kid with a drug addict (no doubt he was a partier and occasional user though (and she knew that)).

First, he probably said that because he felt a little guilty. You can also feel guilty when you dump someone.

There were no rumors/reports he cheated on her while together with her (except for that canada.com BI, that might or might not be about him).

If Jake was straight (which he isn't) he and Michelle would have been the better match. For sure. ;)

I don't think he particularly dislike her. It just that they never were the closest friends ever. Jake interacted with her because he became Heath's friend and she was right next to him all the time back then, and also they had to promote a movie together but that was it.
Movie's filming and proting ends and each one of the crew go separate ways, that's how the business work.

Dude, have you ever had a serious relationship???? After a few months partners lose the condoms, and in heterosexual relationships the woman gets on the pill or on other form of birth control. There's no way Michelle doesn't know how to use the pill, so yeah, she most likely got herself knocked up.

Anonymous said...

I think it is also wrong to blame Michelle without knowing more.
It could have been an accident, it didn't have to be deliberate. Women forget to take pills, some women can't tolerate them and have to use other, less effective methods, etc. If men don't want to use condoms (or even if they do), they have to share in the blame if the woman gets pregnant. If a man really really doesn't want children, then he has to do something about it, and not just assume the woman is going to take care of it all.

Why do you presume that Heath and Michelle didn't want a child?

Well, Heath supposedly wasn't ready for family with Naomi with whom he seemed much more in love with. I doubt he was more ready with Michlle. And in numerous interviews Heath said that Matilda wasn't planned. I remember reading an interview with him in German "In Style" in summer 2005 (maybe other German speaking posters remember?)doing promo for Bro's Grimm. When the interviewer asked him if they planned the baby, he said they didn't. And when the interviewer aked him if he's gonna marry the babymama, he said, I paraphrase, that he guessed he "had to" now. That was before BBM promo begun. Maybe he was just kidding though? Who knows with Heath.

Heath Ledger Covers Vanity Fair said...

Heath Ledger’s final days are chronicled in Peter Biskind’s cover story, “The Last of Heath,” in the August 2009 issue of Vanity Fair, on NY/LA stands July 1 and nationally July 7.

“[Heath] was ready to bust out of the gate, but he didn’t want to step on the gas and become something that he didn’t want to become: a matinee idol,” Heath’s friend and agent, Steven Alexander, told Vanity Fair.

For once, just for once! I'd like to see an actor or celebrity being proud for becoming know by the media and the public.

It seems a comun factor that when they reach some level of stardom (after years trying to reach it) they inmediately make statements about NOT wanting to be famous and they act like they are carrying the cross of being a celebrity.
Like if some superior power CHOSE them to be celebrities and they are just caught in the middle.
I say it's all PR's bullshit.

One of the reasons i liked Jake in the beginnings was that he seemed comfortable whith fan's attention and didn't put the act of "please, don't worship me so much, it's not what i really want"

Then if they don't want attention, choose another job!!! And if it's really ACTING what they want to do, then dont do red carpet, interviews in stupid fashion magazines, and for all things, PUBLICITY!!! it's amazing the number of this "actors/actresses" modeling for clothes, perfumes, cars and other products
Leave that to the professional models!

And BE HAPPY when public gives 2 shits about you, because at the end, most celebrities don't have very much else to offer but their manufactured image.

Fucking whiners >:(

Whether people like it or not, abortion is a safe and legal option. Accidental, "in love on purpose" or a trap, MW having a baby was something she wanted because she did not abort it. Btw the real actual choice to have a baby is made at the moment of truth then, not before at conception.

So Heath was a drug addict. He just substituted prescription drugs for marijuana and alcohol.

Mmm I think you got it backwards. Actually many young people start out taking illegal drugs to cure what ails them before they even know what's really wrong with them. Sure there's "experimentation" but to become an addict physically and emotionally there has to be a need that gets temporarily fulfilled/cured by using. Most likely, Heath's authentic problems with sleep, anxiety, etc. started a long time ago, this is especially obvious if he was using pot and drink, 2 substances that clearly bring along feelings of calm and sleep. Then he stopped using them because of their risks. But of course the core problems with anxiety and sleep disorders didn't go away, maybe even came back with a vengeance. So then he sought help from doctors and took pharmaceuticals, perhaps even therapy, nothing wrong with either of those.

"He just substituted prescription drugs" - what a laugh. If taking Rx for legitimate health problems, and yes sleep disorders and anxiety are legitimate illnesses, makes a person a junkie, well then we got a lot of diabetics, heart patients, organ transplant patients and cancer patients who are hooked on drugs.

4:05, no YOU must be gay, virgin or celibate. Abortions are easy. They aren't "hard and complicated", not at all. I've had one and I know plenty of others, friends and family, who have also. It's the wondering afterwards "Did I do the right thing?" that makes it a little hard....but by that time there's no answer anyway.

"the real actual choice to have a baby is made at the moment of truth then, not before at conception" Yes, that's right. And for you to not realize that making the choice to abort or not to abort, that THAT'S the real true moment of choice to HAVE a baby, is naive. Anyone can take chances with conception, the real decision for having a child is during those first 4 to 16 weeks.

But it is funny how Mr. Ledger at first said they'll take care of Matilda and then some months later he says he and his daughers and ex wife decided to "gift" everything to Matilda. If part of that decision was public pressure, I wouldn't be surprised. Who knows if he really gave everything to Matilda, he probably kept a bit for himself and his two daughters and Mrs. Bell for her daughter.

My Republican right wing Orange County might be changing its tune, one flagged 8th note at a time:

Gay soldier from Tustin faces military court tomorrow

Posted June 29th, 2009, 12:57 pm by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter Orange County Register

Tustin’s Dan Choi, a lieutenant in the Army National Guard, is remarkable enough for his academic and professional achievements. But in recent months he’s become known nationwide for more controversial activities: announcing that he is gay on national television and for helping lead the push to allow openly gay men and women to serve in the armed forces.

But tomorrow, Choi’s own job is on the line. He will be in military court defending himself against an effort to oust him for “moral and professional dereliction” related to his announcement on television in March that he’s gay. That violated the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy instituted under President Bill Clinton.

Choi is part of a movement urging President Barack Obama to follow through on a campaign promise to allow gays in the military to come out of the closet without getting kicked out of the service. In March, he helped launch “Knights Out,” which encourages gay graduates of West Point academy to publicly declare their sexual preference. So far, more than 70 - including Choi - have done so.

Choi, the son of a Baptist minister who served in the South Korean Army, was a straight-A student and president of his senior class at Tustin High School. At West Point, he became fluent in Arabic and studied environmental engineering. In 2003, her served his first stint in Iraq. In 2008, he decided not to reenlist, instead becoming a platoon leader in the National Guard.

He also enrolled at Harvard, where he is seeking a master’s degree in Middle East and religious studies. However, he’s currently on leave from school.

“Coming out as turned out to be a full-time job,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle before serving as the Gay Pride Parade marshal in San Francisco last weekend. He’d never attended a gay pride parade before.

At least 12,500 gays and lesbians have been kicked out of the military for violating the “don’t ask, don’t tell policy.” An estimated 65,000 are believe to be currently serving, according to the Chronicle.

More than 140,00 people have signed a “Don’t Fire Dan” letter to Obama. You can see the letter here.

Choi’s hearing begins at 8 a.m. EDT at the New York National Guard Armory in Syracuse.

The Register’s Cameron Bird looked behind the scenes at Choi’s - and his family’s - struggle to come to grips with his sexuality. Click here to read that story.

What's interesting are the readers comments, especially the slight contrast between them in this article and in the OCR Cameron Bird article, although with only 11 comments so far the right wing extremists probably haven't had a chance to make their mark yet.

6:20 PM, don't worry, Jake will grace many covers when his movies hit the big screen in near future. ;)

I believe Jake thinks it's about time he gets his own cover, one as important as Heath's. I bet he thinks he was supposed to have one by now.

Maybe when Brothers comes out....

It’s not news anymore. Let us know when there is a change in the policy. I have no doubt I fought alonside Marines that were or may have been gay, but when the stuff was happening and they were doing their share in battle…..I can’t say it would have made a difference to me. I didn’t know and I didn’t care. Besides. we all had our own sleeping bags and cots (at times). The great thing is, after 2 tours in beautiful Southeast Asia, I’m here to still not care about someone elses lifestyle.

Wow. He sounds like a great guy. Anyone who risks their lives on the front line should be honored. Who cares what their persuasion is. And why is this such an issue with the military? So, let’s see…male senators can conduct affairs with a man or woman, and stain blue dresses, but gawd forbid any military personnel should be gay??? I don’t get it. Shed some light here.

Its odd that the military will welcome unskilled illegals while dening an highly educated American Citizen with speical skills to serve. Its time to replea the Don’t ask Don’t tell policy.

Yeah…Let’s kick out a good soldier who is fluent in arabic…That is what we need to do right now…The country will be safer for it I am sure…

if gays want to take a bullet for my freedom, i say let him/her. i have no problem with that. fight the good fight choi!

I am very proud of all of you for supporting this wonderful man. He risked his life for us. There are still so many hateful people out there…..I am pleased to see so much support for him. My wife & I both agree it is time to get rid of this ridiculous policy the military has. If you know your history, than you know they said the same thing about integrating military units with blacks: that it would disrupt military effectiveness. Bigotry is bigotry no matter who it is aimed at.

yes it is news— and im so sorry that mr. choi has had to endure this type of judgement. as a person in the military or as a human being. it’s wrong wrong wrong…
when we let our government treat our “volunteer’s” in this fashion— it’s very disappointing. and when we allow churches to pay for ballot measures that take away civil rights— that is wrong too.
we are all created equal remember?
apparently some people get to choose who is equal now and who is not.
hopefully the children of these judgemental officials wont face this feeling of being “less than” a human being

look the guy was gay before he ever “came out”, therefore GAY when he EARNED the rank of LIEUTENANT…ya walk the walk, ya tend to business…ya ALSO put yer britches on just like me…..you are willing to put yer LIFE on the line for ME and my family…and OUR COUNTRY, OUR FREEDOM..u go ahead on LT Dan CHOI…and THANK YOU.

I don't mind if there are gays in the Military either. My problems with them is the killing of people and those kind of things....

Has Reese Witherspoon ever worked with Nevis Devine?

Dear Reese-spicous:
Nope. She has worked with other Blind Vice subjects...and been one herself!

I heard somewhere along the line that Twighlighter Kristen Stewart is a lesbian and its 1 of the reasons PR is pushing the fauxmance. I wonder if she'll be Toothy's next beard.

For what? Dont see it happening.

Heath set up a trust for Matilda. All of his money is channeled through that. That's why all of the fuss over his will was stupid. Heath's assests are through the trust.

Matida is one of the richest girls in the world.

Didnt Jake have an Out magazine cover?

Gorgeous pictures of Heath on-line at VF. dont know if these are all in the magazine ? ? ?

Any woman with any sense would never allow herself to get pregnant with the child of a man she's only known for a few months.

I don't care what Heath said, Michelle should have known better. I don't necessarily think she tried to trap him on purpose, but I think, on a subconscious level, she knew she was not in Heath's league and thought a baby would be a way to cement them as a couple. Two years was about the longest Heath's relationships lasted. Michelle should have just enjoyed the ride and then got out graciously.

It's possible the Jake may have issues with Michelle, esp. if he knows she was causing Heath grief over Michelle. Jake loved Heath; not Michelle.

I meant to say "... if he knew she was causing Heath grief over Matilda."

Jake was on the cover soloof EW in 2004, and Premiere in Dec. of 2005. Plus GQ in 2007 and 2005 (I think) and details and Out in 2005.

no VF yet.

9:40, never felt unbridled passions of love, eh? Everything feels right, everything's gonna be okay, he's the one, love at first sight. And don't tell me you have, or that you did, because it's clear you don't remember. Get off your high horse named Sensible, that is if you aren't cemented into the saddle, and tumble back down to youthful bliss and what its like to be madly deeply optimistically in love. Then you might understand how knowing someone for more than a few months and doing research and thinking sensibly, those are things gained AFTER the blissful mad deep optimistic love at first sight in our youth. And you know what, I both hate and thank God for the experience and the bittersweet knowledge that followed, it's something we all have to do, isn't it.

Reese Witherspoon Presumed Dead In Private Plane Crash

Sorry 10:09, I've been cemented to my high horse since I've been eighteen. I don't care how "in love" you are, a child is not a playtoy, and you ought to know someone for more than six months before you get pregnant.

I don't like Reese, but I hope to God that this is not true.

I fail to see the humor in those fake news stories, especially the one about Reese.

Anonymous said...

Oh go away, Reese. Isn't there a fake gushy aren't I wonderful PR story you need to plant somewhere?

Anonymous said...

Why in the hell would Reese plant a story about her death? Do you truly believe she would do that to her children and her family?

And to wish for her death???? Some of you are far worse than Reese.
