Playing gay, being gay
24 November 2005
This well might be the Year of the Gay at the Oscars. Not the year of the gay actor - heavens forbid - but the year when actors are rewarded for playing gay parts. Philip Seymour Hoffman has produced what is said to be a virtuoso account of Truman Capote's mincing style in Capote. Felicity Huffman, the put-upon one in Desperate Housewives, has been persuaded to play a male-to-female transvestite in Transamerica. And Annie Proulx's great short story, Brokeback Mountain, about an extended and tragic love affair between two cowboys, has been filmed by Ang Lee with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in the leads.
Oscars surely await some of these. There are half a dozen other big name actors playing gay roles this season, and it's evidently now a safe career move. It's worth noting, however, that none of these actors themselves is gay, and indeed most of them have been at some pains to distance themselves from any such suggestion. Michelle Williams, the mother of Ledger's child, appears in Brokeback Mountain as his character's betrayed wife. That, one must assume, could only happen when there was no possibility whatever of it being, for instance, a sardonic joke on a real-life gay affair. The casting of Williams is a spectacular example of the sexual alibi; for anyone who cares to wonder, we are reassured that this could only be a piece of "let's pretend", and the actor's real interests are nervously displayed on screen.
As if that wasn't enough, the actors in these films are always at pains to stress the incredible trauma involved in having to pretend to kiss a person of the same sex in front of cameras. To be fair, this is always a subject that unhealthily obsesses interviewers, but actors' responses are often highly amusing. Jake Gyllenhaal has said: "Heath and I were both saying, 'Let's get the love scenes over as fast as we can - all right, cool. Let's get to the important stuff.'"
We are left in no doubt at all. The actors in these films are so extraordinarily heterosexual that playing gay presents them with incredible challenges. Personally, I've spent a day down a working coal mine, and think that, as jobs go, being asked to snog Heath Ledger is not among the world's more demanding professional tasks.
But Hollywood, evidently, agrees with the actors. When you look at recent Oscars, the tendency is fairly clear. Tom Hanks - famously uxorious - won for playing a gay man in Philadelphia. Hilary Swank's burlesque turn as a transsexual teen in Boys Don't Cry followed, and then Charlize Theron won for the fat, ugly, lesbian serial killer in Monster. Of course, as is customary, some of the Oscar-winning credit goes to the make-up artist here - golly, look at Charlize, she's made herself all ugly - but most of it is surely down to the incredible fact that an artist was prepared to demean herself enough to play a lesbian.
When you look at the history of Oscar-winning performances, Hollywood's new enthusiasm for embracing minorities seems less than profound. Notoriously, the easiest way to win an Oscar is to play somebody bravely fighting against a physical condition or a mental handicap. The easiest route of all, in fact, is to play a gifted artist suddenly struck down by disability - the early years of the Academy awards are littered with long-forgotten tales of deaf sopranos and ballerinas with gout. As the "Kate Winslet" character in Ricky Gervais's series Extras scabrously observed, "Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot? Oscar. Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man? Oscar. Seriously, you are guaranteed an Oscar if you play a mental."
The way Hollywood is rushing to reward heterosexual actors playing gay roles does not, really, reflect very well on its engagement. It is just too much like its fairly disgraceful engagement with mental and physical disability, and too much like rewarding a variety turn. Hollywood, so admiring of an actor's ability to project a sexuality not his own in these cases, has never been in a hurry to reward those far more common examples of gay actors convincingly playing heterosexual roles. In most cases, that involves rather more than the requirement of kissing this year's starlet in front of the cameras - a requirement no less or more demanding for a gay actor than Mr Gyllenhaal being asked to kiss Mr Ledger, surely. It may involve an actor's whole life.
One of the very striking things about this whole curious fashion is that not one of the actors involved is gay themselves. Moreover, it seems fairly likely, in view of the tone of the attendant publicity, that a studio just wouldn't cast a gay actor in one of these roles. It is quite impossible to imagine Heat magazine asking a gay actor how they enjoyed kissing their straight co-star, or indeed, their gay co-star. It would raise questions of enthusiasm which the world of publicity is not quite ready for and we can only, it seems, watch such kisses with the assurance, as swift as can be arranged, that nobody involved could possibly have derived pleasure from it.
But there's another, rather bigger reason why the studios wouldn't cast a gay actor in such a role. In America, evidently, there aren't any gay actors. One may grow rather satirical on the subject, but the truth is that whereas in every other country in the world it is widely accepted that theatre and film offer a congenial and sympathetic area in which gay men and women can work, this is simply not true in America. There are no gay actors - or at least, there weren't until Nathan Lane, to everyone's utter incredulity, came out. Of course, there were gay actors in America's past - James Dean, Cary Grant, Dirk Bogarde, Rock Hudson, Danny Kaye. Plenty of them, in fact. But, for whatever reason, there's hardly a single gay actor of recognisable stature working in Hollywood. An incredible fact.
Sooner or later, one of those non-existent gay actors will take a role as a gay character, and tell us all subsequently how difficult they found kissing their co-star, to general derisive hilarity. In fact, it's not hard to think of a recent film where exactly that situation arose, starring one of those gentlemen with a boyfriend on the payroll and a lady hired for the purpose of premieres. But Hollywood will only seem truly tolerant when it allows gay actors to play gay roles, kissing included, and no whining about it in the publicity afterwards. Until then there's - how should one put it - a slight air of Al Jolson about the whole business.

Now, that was ... interesting :)
DiCaprio's director is Martin Scorsese, Johnny Depp's Tim Burton, Brad Pitt's is David Fincher. I hope for Jake he'll find a good director he'll work with repeatedly, maybe Fincher for him too? Pitt is getting old. ;)
Heath liked Gilliam and did IODP as s favour to him. If he were still alive I would have wished for him to find a better, more respected director to work with. I know he liked Gilliam, but.
I think Brad Pitt has some 5 years left, after that it'll be difficult for him to be cast as a leading man. Then it's time for a younger generation to step in.
Older actors like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Harrison Ford are still leading men.
DiCaprio's director is Martin Scorsese /
The Gangs Of New York star has hired a top vocal coach to teach him how to mimic Ol' Blue Eyes, famed for hits including New York, New York.
The 34-year-old actor was said to have high hopes of landing the coveted part - even though his singing was deemed too DUFF for the starring role in Moulin Rouge that went to Scots actor EWAN McGREGOR.
Insiders revealed director chum MARTIN SCORSESE has put DiCaprio at the top of his list to play Sinatra. But Scorsese is insisting the actor does it HIS way - by mastering the Rat Pack legend's famous tones.
A source confirmed: "Leo has hired a top vocal coach to get him sounding like Sinatra. He is a massive fan of the singer and has always wanted to play him. He would be sick to miss out on the leading role because his singing wasn't up to scratch. "He is now in intensive vocal coaching lessons to replicate Sinatra's distinctive style."
Scorsese previously directed DiCaprio in the 2002 smash Gangs Of New York - as well as in box office hits The Aviator and The Departed. The Sinatra film - set to hit screens next year - will focus on how the superstar became embroiled with the Mafia.
The Sun
^^Of course he'll hire DiCaprio again.
"Leo has hired a top vocal coach to get him sounding like Sinatra"
Nah, that doesn't make sense because they'll use Sinatra's original tracks.

SEPARATE NOT
SEAN Penn has withdrawn his request to legally separate from his long-suffering wife, Robin Wright Penn -- maybe because he saw photos of the beautiful blonde happily playing at Cannes. Robin spent the week walking red carpets, flirting with Quentin Tarantino, chatting up Brad Pitt, and, our source said, "partying every night -- but particularly enjoying herself at the Art of Elysium/Cartier party at Soho House, clearly having the best time without Sean. He's just jealous."
^^LOL. Go Robin!

Nov 2, 2007 - This guy again?
^^^ Some thought that Mr X is Austin's friend (there are pictures of Mr X and Austin).
Jake, Austin and Mr X?
Sure looks like him. :)
What makes people think he's a friend of Austin's and not a friend of Jake's?
And why does it matter?
A day after he was to be sworn in for his fourth term as mayor, J.W. Lown resigned the position to pursue a personal relationship.
Lown, 32, said in a telephone call from Mexico Wednesday that he has started a relationship with someone who does not have legal status in the United States. Lown said he did not want to take the oath of office knowing he was "aiding and assisting" someone who was not a citizen. "I made the final decision when I knew it was the right decision to make for me and my partner and our future -- and for the community," he said.
The mayor declined to identify the person. "I don't want to give his name," Lown told the San Angelo Standard-Times.
Lown said the man came to the United States five years ago and attended Angelo State University. He said the relationship started after March. Lown and the man are in Mexico awaiting a visa to come back legally. Lown said he is safe and staying at a hotel but did not specify the city.
"I did the best I could," Lown said. "I had to get down here and get everything in order to make a life for myself." He said he and his partner will come back to San Angelo if "the people of San Angelo will welcome me back."
The abrupt resignation came only 10 days after achieving a landslide victory, receiving 89 percent of the vote, for his fourth term. Lown was scheduled to take the oath of office Tuesday but did not appear at the event. City staff, the council and the community were taken off guard when news broke that the mayor had resigned. He tendered his resignation through a letter to City Manager Harold Dominguez.
Dominguez said he got a text message from Lown Tuesday telling him that Lown wouldn't be at the regular City Council meeting. Later, Dominguez got a message saying a package was being sent to him. He got the package that contained the mayor's resignation at 8 a.m. Wednesday. The mayor in San Angelo is elected at-large, serves a two-year term and has a seat on the City Council. The mayor has no additional power beyond that of his fellow councilors, who are elected from single-member districts. The job pays $600 a year.
In his resignation letter, Lown said, "While I know that the timing of this announcement is less than ideal, I have my own compelling reasons for making this decision. I have made thousands of decisions on behalf of our community, and I weighed this decision in the same manner that I approached other decisions."

"What makes people think he's a friend of Austin's and not a friend of Jake's?"
Because those two guys from Borders are "identified" as Austin's friends and roommates.
"And why does it matter?"
It doesn't matter - we are curious about people Jake hangs with.
Ledger's performance solid, the film not so much:
E Online overview
Who identified them as Austin's friends, and how would they know? Not trying to be snarky, genuinely curious.
I thought Jake wasn't allowed to be seen with single men.

From time to time we let Jake off the leash.
But only after he swears (on the Staying In The Closet rulebook) he'll behave in public!
And why does it matter?
Just interesting to show that his life still entwines with Austin in some way, mutual friends and all.
Especially as the trolls have maintained for so long that Jake couldn't even stoop to being in the same room as a "Z-lister" like Austin.
If Dan White hadn't loaded his gun that fateful day some 30 years ago, Harvey Milk could have been celebrating his 79th birthday today. Would he be dancing in the streets for all that gays have fought for and won? Or would he be holding his head in shame at all that we've yet to accomplish?
Queerty
Of course Jake and Austin are friends. It's just that some of us don't believe they are anything more than fuckbuddies, if that. I am sure Jake has a wide variety of friends.
That has nothing to do with Austin being a Z lister. That's just a statement regarding his status. Well, I would probably catergorize him as a C lister.
"Of course Jake and Austin are friends. It's just that some of us don't believe they are anything more than fuckbuddies, if that. I am sure Jake has a wide variety of friends."
Have pity for jaustin fans please!
I'm his one and only Grey Goose.
I think the wonderful Harvey Milk would be doing the same thing he did, encouraging people to come out of the closet, right up front during the gay marriage rallies, and cheering for what has been accomplished, and having dialogue with President Obama! :)
Politics sucks, but gays could use a leader.
Maybe Jake's moving on? Manwise that is.
"After Monster's Ball was such a success, Lee Daniels was offered similar projects. "But they were embarrassing - I almost can't articulate how embarrassing. They were things like, who's my baby's daddy? Ghetto movies about guns, comedies, stuff that didn't make sense." Instead, he produced The Woodsman, starring Kevin Bacon as a paedophile recently released from prison. Shadowboxer did less well ("I didn't understand why people didn't respond. It had Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding in it! It was a party!").
Daniels's next project is another about-turn: Denzel Washington and Robert De Niro in a sort of gay Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? British writer Joshua St Johnston is working on the script. Being truthful is a priority for Daniels. "I loathe men in the closet," he says, before adding, "I wouldn't mind sleeping with a few of them."

Lee, are you working on any new projects with straight characters?
I think that Harvey Milk would have a few choice words for the con man in the White House, and they wouldn't be pleasant.
A lot less than he'd have for Bush, I'm sure. I think he'd be pleased with Obama. And it's all part of the dialogue anyway! :)
I think he'd be pleased with Obama.Milk is turning over in his grave.
There is a picture of Austin with that friend that looks like they are still in their teens. Clearly a very good friend of Austin's, so pt no pot, not a new man for Jake.
Funny how you don't usually see pics of Jake without shades these days. Maybe because you can see his eyes in these Lakers pics, but the man looks haunted. Its like a male version of Katie Holmes, but just so much worse. The mental and physical cost of all this bearding are certainly taking there toll.
I'm just horrified that the people who should really be looking out for him, Maggie, Chris, his own mother(!), Austin(??), haven't stepped in to stop this before now. Its heartbreaking.
"Funny how you don't usually see pics of Jake without shades these days. Maybe because you can see his eyes in these Lakers pics, but the man looks haunted."
ITA. As much as I'm angry with Jake I can't help feeling sorry for him looking at those pics. :(
I think some of you need to stop with the drama, the wishful thinking and the projection.
Mental and physical costs? Oh puleese.
You people are all so pesimist! Maybe the shades and the tired expresion are because he got too much of Austin-love this past week,
and now he is gonna have it with this new guy. Apparently Austin doesn't mind to share!! ;)))
"I think some of you need to stop with the drama"
Oh come on, without the drama Jake's just a priviledged pretty boy with rapidly fading looks and a stalled career.
3:37
Couldn't agree more w/ you ;D
3:34.. from photgraphic evidence having some idea of Austin's loving rather I would expect Jake to look rather tired, but just a little more exhiliarated and glowing.
Me thinks Austin (no worries about wearing speedos with that one) is maybe 'loving' in Europe right now.
that should of course read...

Sorry to say, but Harvey Milk probably would be long dead of AIDS by now.
I think I'll have another drink.
Jake's little fake PDA with the mini-chin earlier this week was designed to diffuse any homo-speculation about his Lakers man-date last night. In the absence of any firm movie news, Jake can only arrange and coordinate mini-pr stunts.

Like what?
Jake ha probably signed a contract, so nothing anyone can do until it expires--which is probably after POP comes out.
Get a tattoo. Whether it's a stick on or the real thing is no big deal. Just make sure you tell everyone how much you loved it when Bruno the Tattoo Man made your arm bleed for an hour.
Wear an eye patch. While this may seem a bit over the top, nobody will doubt the masculinity of the one eyed wacko staring them down at Wal-Mart.
Stick out your chest. Even bird-chested posers look manlier with their chests jutted out. Add a cocky strut and you'll have any woman within 1000 yards swooning.
Walk with a limp. There's something manly about a limp. Maybe it's an old football injury or perhaps you got your leg slashed in a knife fight or caught in a combine. Just make sure your story is grisly enough to get the attention of your audience.

LOL
I remember the Rome pics of Jake with the toothpick in his mouth.
Man, how i laughed on that one... : DDD
Zac Efron often has a tooth pick in his mouth too. I think the guys want to look cool with it. LOL.
Good macho idea! They should do that more often. lol
toothpick: I understand they want to look like a man, but why do they want to look like a 65 years old man?
Walking around with a toothpick in your mouth is just ridiculous. If Efron and Jakey want to look like real men, they should try out something else.
What?! Walk with a limp?
I think we now have definate evidence that Jake is gay. According to the gossip girl web site (can't seem to link it so you'll just have to google), Jake is now going to 'pilates' classes with Reese.
Has anyone ever heard of a straight man, ever, attending a pilates class. Is Reese actually now trying to out Jake herself.
Jake is gay, but that sounds like "he is so supportive and they do everything together" tabloid bullshit.
"According to a paparazzo source on the scene, the “Legally Blonde” beauty (LOL!) was training with boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal, although the two left in separate vehicles."
Gossip Girls (Reese pics)
No, it sounds like he's a total wuss. What sort of woman wants a man who enjoys attending 'women's' exercise classes. It's one step away from him wanting to wear your underwear.
She just looks so attractive in those pics doesn't she. A killing combo of early onset of turkey neck and upper arm cellulite.
Whta's the difference between going to a pilates class or going to a yoga class?? Remember last year and they weren't in seperate cars.
Yoga classes are more "gay" IMO not pilates.
BTW:Jake looks like shit in the BB from last night.
"Remember last year and they weren't in seperate cars."
LOL
Yes, we remember that laughable photo op.
6:06.. sorry, men can do yoga, at a push, but unless you possess a vagina, you don't belong in a pilates class.
"No, it sounds like he's a total wuss. What sort of woman wants a man who enjoys attending 'women's' exercise classes."
Woman who uses fake boyfriend for self promotion and marketing.
No pictures - Jake wasn't there, paparazzi or GossipGirls made that up.
You are so wrong 6:12PM, I see men in pilates class all the time, at least half of the class are men. It's ideal for atheletes, as well:
http://www.pilates.com/BBAPP/V/personal/pilates-in-your-sport.html
This blog is the only place I have heard that only women should do pilates, obviously you don't excercise.
PS: What do you have against vaginas?
Geez, it's made up Reeke shit.
Paparazzi would have a picture of Jake if he was there.
http://www.pilates.com/BBAPP/V/personal/pilates-in-your-sport-running.html
Seems like nowadays women are allowed to do "masculine" things as long as they can still look "feminine", while men aren't allowed to do anything deemed "feminine" without juvenile ridicule. Even though it's supposedly liberating for women, underneath it all, there is still a very misogynistic male-dominant attitude.
Next Reeke photo op - Reese and Jake in a nail salon. lol
"This blog is the only place I have heard that only women should do pilates, obviously you don't excercise."
Obviously you don't follow Reeke publicity.
6:27.. maybe you should try to lighten up a bit, I'm slagging off the concept of the 'Prince of Persia' choosing to spend his afternoon's doing a few light stretches with his 'lady' friend, don't take it so seriously.
Jake is a gay wuss, and that has nothing to do with joga or pilates.
Why are trolls pissed off?
OT: But does anyone else think that Britney Spears' kids are totally cute and sweet, like Matilda? I think they all will be unpretentious when they grow up. Brit may have her problems and, but I think she's nice.
"Whta's the difference between going to a pilates class or going to a yoga class??"
There would be no difference in this case - Jake "supporting" the beard and making a fool of himself.
Brit may have her problems and, but I think she's nice. /
Brit might be a nice person, but with such parents kids will need a lot of therapy.
^^Well, I hope her kids will be fine. She seems to be doing better now. I hope it lasts.
Matilda, Michelle and some cute guy
Jake and Beard, Beard and Jake = Ugh.
Let's focus on the movies. I wonder if "Brothers" is as good as some who already saw it say? Will there be award attention?
I'm excited for Anne Hathaway's and Johnny Depp's movie next year and am looking forward to "Shutter Island" with Michelle and Leo.
The BBM women work with some great people, don't they? ;)
Despite the mixed reviews (as expected, it's a Gilliam movie), I'm looking forward to watch "Imaginarium" as well.
I'm a good fan, I still follow all the BBM cast. I'm still not bored. LOL.
I wonder if "Brothers" is as good as some who already saw it say? Will there be award attention? /
Too little info from too few people. I think Brothers will be good, but don't expect any award attention.
"Matilda, Michelle and some cute guy"
That guy is seriously cute (Matilda is cute too, lol ;)).
Who is he?
Too little info from too few people. I think Brothers will be good, but don't expect any award attention. /
I agree, it's way too early, we need real reviews. But if the movie follows the original movie closely, not much can go wrong. I think the movie will be ok. :)
7:16 PM, I don't know who he is, but his face looks familiar to me...
Michelle's cousin perhaps?
"Michelle's cousin perhaps?"
Could be a member of her family, yeah.
"That guy is seriously cute"
You can say that again!
"The BBM women work with some great people, don't they? ;)"
BBM women are great people and actresses.
Heath Ledger - clip from The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
I just looked at the Lakers pics and I gotta say Jake doesn't look that great. Yes, he does have a hat shading his face. But he does look like he's been very stressed out and he looks kinds dazed out. If he's stressed about his life he has no one to blame but himself. He can choose to go along for the ride or do his own thing. No one has a gun to his head to do anything.
"He can choose to go along for the ride or do his own thing."
Remember that blind item about gay actor who was asked to sign the contract about not coming out in order to get a leading role in a popcorn movie? (He refused.)
Maybe Jake had to sign bearding contract or something similar for PoP?
Even if Jake signed some kind of contract, no one made him do it. He would have willingly and knowingly signed his name. No one can force him to do anything.
Of course not, but in that case he couldn't decide to break the contract (stop bearding) when he pleases.
Bet when Jake was collecting his Bafta for BBM, he never guessed than in just a few years he would be reduced to this.
Reese's fluffer No wonder his looks so haunted at the basketball.
"Heath Ledger - clip from The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus"
Heath was good with accents and his voice. :)
I'm just horrified that the people who should really be looking out for him, Maggie, Chris, his own mother(!), Austin(??), haven't stepped in to stop this before now. Its heartbreaking. His mother?! She's right behind Reeke. In fact she loves Reeke so much that Reeke is comfortable doing PDA with her a foot away according to US Reekly!
"Bet when Jake was collecting his Bafta for BBM, he never guessed than in just a few years he would be reduced to this."
Oh please. Reeke probably won't last "forever".
Some posters totally exaggerate about his "failed" career too. Alright Jake had a commercial flop (Zodiac) and tukey (Rendition), but it happens to the best acotrs. How many flops and turkies did Johnny Depp have? Many. But he also had many great, successful movies. Leo's movie last year with Russell Crowe was a commercial and critical flop (though it was not a Scorsese movie, ha!), Heath was lucky and had three consecutive critical hits BBM, INT, and TDK (two of them even commercial hits), now with Imaginarium it doesn't look too good (even with Johhny Depp's star power in it). That's how it goes, sometimes you're in something great, sometimes not. I'm confident that at least one of Jake's upcoming movies will we well received by ciritcs and another will do fine at the B.O. He's stll young, Depp's career really only started with 30! with Edward Scissorhands. I think Jake's career will be fine.
"Heath was lucky and had three consecutive critical hits BBM, INT, and TDK"
Heath wa not lucky, he was very, very good. Stop comparing him to Jake to make your point.
Adam Lambert Is Brokeback Mountain, Kris Allen Is Crash
While I think that Jake is a good actor, I don't think that he is as versatile as Johnny Depp. But, so far his longest starring role for the past 2 years is playing at being Mr. Witherspoon and he sucks at pretending to be the perfect, castrated boyfriend.
I think POP may be a B.O. hit and I'll be bold and say Nailed will be received well by ciritcs. We'll see.
"But, so far his longest starring role for the past 2 years is playing at being Mr. Witherspoon and he sucks at pretending to be the perfect, castrated boyfriend."
LOL. C'mon.
"I think POP may be a B.O. hit"
Jake should pray for a B.O. flop.
Nailed will go straight to DVD, if it's ever finished.
DVD - fine by me, I want to see it.

One thing that puzzles me, whether Reeke is real or not, is that when do we ever see Reese cheering Jake on for anything? It's all about her - so that much is blaringly obvious - he's there to make her look good. I don't like seeing such a beautiful, talented guy in the background all the time. :(
And Heath was not lucky; just very, very good. I wish he were lucky, we'd still have him with us.

X17: "So Jakey was there, but it looks like he worked out somewhere else and came to pick her up."
X17 - Reese leaves pilates class
That thing is her hand looks like Mercedes car key.
Even if Jake signed some kind of contract, no one made him do it. He would have willingly and knowingly signed his name. No one can force him to do anything.
May 22, 2009 9:25 PMSorry, I don't agree. You are missing the concept of coercion. Agreements under threat of violence, loss of life or livelihood constitute coercion.
That is what happened here. Jake slipped down a notch in my opinion when he gave in. Nevertheless he *was* threatened.
And yes, an industry *can* force someone to do something. Why do you think the word "force" exists? It wouldn't exist if it couldn't be done.
"Funny how you don't usually see pics of Jake without shades these days. Maybe because you can see his eyes in these Lakers pics, but the man looks haunted."
ITA. As much as I'm angry with Jake I can't help feeling sorry for him looking at those pics. :(
May 22, 2009 3:23 PM.
ITA, ITA. He looks like he doesn't even like watching basketball. They just make him go there because it's a heterosexual thing to do, lol, sort of. :-\
"I don't see Reeke, just the chin."
His pic is below hers.
Sorry to say, but Harvey Milk probably would be long dead of AIDS by now.
May 22, 2009 4:10 PM.
Possible, but maybe not. Cleve Jones is still with us! National Coming Out Day is held on Oct 11 to honor his birthday.
btw CJ is calling for a march on Washington for NCOD this year. Be there or be talked about! :-)
ITA, ITA. He looks like he doesn't even like watching basketball. They just make him go there because it's a heterosexual thing to do, lol, sort of. :-\/
IMO this is ridiculous. He looked fine enough in the pics with Reese at the softball field. If something bothered him at the basketball game, who knows what it was. But maybe some people write too much into some pictures.
"His pic is below hers."
So what?
We have 30 pictures of Reese with Mercedes car key. No pictures of Reese getting into the car.
We have 2 pictures of Jake getting into the car that isn't Mercedes.
Reminds me of that old X17 Reeke fiction (Sunday, church, CD).
The Gays brace for defeat when the California Supreme Court announces its decision on Prop HATE next Tuesday.
The decision will be posted on the CA Supreme Court website at 10am Pacific time, 1pm Eastern.
Hooray for Cleve Jones! :)
ITA, the feeling that you must do something in order to protect your livelihood is coersion, the most basic kind.
Nonsense - if Iowa and New England can embrace gay marriage, so can Cali. :)
"CJ is calling for a march on Washington for NCOD this year"
Great idea.
re: Cali, yes, the Prop 8 margin was only 4% (52-48). I think the tide is moving in our direction. Still, I don't like the idea that they could just keep alternating votes on gay marriage so that it becomes legal for 2 years, illegal for 2, and legal again ad infinitum.
If we lose, then that is the situation that the CA Supreme Court is setting up. To me that does not seem like a responsible decision on their part. You don't just vote fundamental rights on and off whenver you feel like it by a margin of 50% plus one vote. That means that it is not a right at all. >:-(
According to the New York Times, two gay women are among the candidates Obama is considering for the US Supreme Court: Kathleen M. Sullivan and Pamela S. Karlan, both of Stanford Law School.
Obama has instructed his staff to be prepared for the announcement this coming week, as early as Tuesday.
One of the great pioneers of our movement, David Mixner, has issued a call for a national march on Washington, D.C. this fall. /
As this Administration sits in offices plotting timeline charts on what rights they feel comfortable granting us this year, clearly it is time for us to gin up our efforts and stop waiting for them to hand us our God given entitlements. Enough. I really can't stomach any more being told 'not now'. As nice as it would be, no one is going to give us our freedom; we are going to have to continue to fight like hell for it. It is demeaning to us to be moved around on a political chess board like freedom is a move in some game.
We have to stop it.
Let's never forget that we are not talking about just another piece of legislation nor just an executive order. What is at stake is over 1,000 rights, benefits, privileges and protections granted to all other Americans and denied to the LGBT community. It is about the ability of those who choose to serve their country can do so in total honesty and freedom. That the vision of America is for our young as well as other young Americans. Finally as we work toward full equality we must halt in its tracks the efforts of a number of our fellow citizens to put in place a system of Apartheid for LGBT citizens. The stakes are way too high for them to tell us to wait until next year, or even until the next term.
Our freedom can't be negotiated in the political offices of the White House and in the halls of Congress. Our goal is not to make their path easier but to ensure that young LGBT citizens will not be beaten, denied the right to serve, have their love demeaned in some sort of separate but equal system or excluded from giving their gifts and talents freely to this nation. At this moment, there is very little movement on any of these issues in the White House and it appears that some even believe we should be happy with just hate crimes legislation being passed this year.
I adore President Obama but not enough to allow his team to delay my freedom for political convenience or comfort. It is unacceptable.
My plea is for our LGBT leaders to call a March on Washington for Marriage Equality this November and if they won't do it, I appeal to our young to come together and provide the leadership. We need to come together in a display of powerful community unity to empower our young and to show the nation that anything less than full freedom is unacceptable. Clearly there are other issues that should be on the agenda for the march but marriage equality is the lynchpin that deals with so many of those issues. The most striking outside that institution would be the freedom to serve in our nation's military - and that weekend I think we could have a separate powerful event to highlight that.
Having organized a number of major marches in my near 50 years of activism, I don't take this call lightly. Trust me, I know that there are times when such marches are ineffective and poorly timed. Yet, I have also seen them be extremely effective both in message and building momentum within the movement. For the first time, we have the opportunity to have tens of thousands of our straight allies and straight students join us and we should organize the march to make it easy for them to be by our sides.
My experience has taught me the secret to any march is to keep the message simple and to make it easy for others to join. Of course, our best organizers must be enlisted in order to ensure that hundreds of thousands attend in an orderly and safe fashion.
Tapping into my previous work, I would suggest the following for consideration: On the Friday before the march 12,000 (approximately the number of our service people that have been dismissed under DADT) led by our veterans walk single file from the Pentagon to the White House until all 12,000 are across from the White House. Let the nation see visibly how many of our citizens have had their careers destroyed while the military allows convicted felons to serve. I would love to see 12,000 across from the White House chanting "Let US Serve."
One of the lessons from previous marches is that everyone should be on the Mall by no later than 3PM. We should not let logistics prevent people from getting to the Mall or otherwise they won't be counted. Everyone must be present before the evening news has to develop their stories. Each marcher and organizer should be told that every single person has to be on the Mall from 2PM to 3PM in order for us to have a success. How they choose to do that I will leave to the organizers.
Watching press secretary Robert Gibbs dodge and duck answers on LGBT issues while it seems almost every other group and issue is being discussed is so depressing to me. The promise of the Democrats being in control was great. They still can rise to greatness. It is not too late but they need our help in lifting them out of their own fears and into the light.
President Kennedy had to deal with a recession, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis and so much more. However, when Dr. King and others filled the streets of cities around America and yes, Washington, DC, the president found the resources and time to stay by their sides. The time has come for us to remove the current administration's option of shrinking from leadership on this issue and to insist they rise to a new level of greatness along side us as we all fight together for freedom. It is the only way.
March on Washington for Marriage Equality 2009
^^Well that's good news. But I will really be disappointed in California if they vote against civil rights.
^^Good news about the Supreme Court justice candidates, I meant. :)
For every civil rights battle, it has been the same. I agree, David Mixner.
David Mixner: "Our goal is ... to ensure that young LGBT citizens will not be beaten, denied the right to serve, have their love demeaned in some sort of separate but equal system or excluded from giving their gifts and talents freely to this nation."
:)
No wonder Ryan was drunk all the time over there and they both headed back to the US last Monday:
Ryan cold shouldered
ONE of the funniest stories from the Cannes Film Festival involves newly minted film star Abbie Cornish whose actor partner Ryan Phillippe was snubbed on the red carpet.
When Cornish swanned into the cinema in the breathtaking gown from Toni Maticevski he made as if to walk down with her but was discreetly pulled away.
The poor guy who was used to playing second fiddle to former Oscar-ised wife Reese Witherspoon was then relegated to a back seat in the cinema.
Maybe he should pick a girlfriend who will not diminish his own star power?
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,25527808-5009160,00.html
Nonsense, based on the pictures, Ryan and Abbie had a great time in Cannes.
You have to feel sorry for Ryan, always the bridesmade never the bride.
Anyway, with Cannes drawing to a close tomorrow we should hopefully see the recent assault of Reeking diminish. We've just got tomorrow to look forward to, if Abbie Cornish does win, who knows what the crazed meglomaniac midget will do. Whatever, it should prove fairly amusing I'm sure.
(there is/was apparently some you tube footage of Reese seriously losing it about Ryan from her recent Avon trip to Las Vegas. I can't find it, but if anyone can I sure its worth a few).
I don't think it was nonsense. They were there Thursday - Sunday and from the pics they had a good time, especially Ryan. From reports including comments from some girls on their facebook, Ryan either turned up drunk or got drunk at several parties and some sans Abby. He missed the photoshoot for his movie the Bang, bang club due to a angover although he recovered to do some press later on.
There are pics of Abby and Ryan arriaving at LAX on Monday and some were puzzled to why she would leave since her movie and performance in Bright Star is in line to win an award. It seemed abrupt and they didn't look like happy campers at LAX. Also he was spotted in nay the next day sans Abby.
I bet she was pissed, the only thing I can't figure out is why didn'r he just leave and she stay unless she assumed she or her film wouldn't win.
Ryan should have learned to use condoms. His life would have been much, much happier.
2:43 PM
Do Ryan and Abbie make you feel less sorry for Reeke?
Why would Abby leave Cannes if she thought she was going to win? She may have flown back but i bet it's w/o Ryan.
Ryan has issues with booze and women more sucesful than him. He should check into rehab and marry some waitress.
"Ryan has issues women more sucesful than him"
Reese's PR team bullshit.
Just so you know before you make an ignorant assumption, Cannes casts always walk into the theater together not with their guests. After they are seated the guests join the cast in their row. Ben's girlfriend and Jane's daughter received the same treatment. Early showers at Cannes do not remain on hand throughout the entire festival. It is considered a bit desperate to do so.
It's amazing how one well placed Page Six paragraph which may or may not have been true set off such a frenzy of "See he's an asshole" from Team Reese.
Makes you wonder where that came from.
Abbie gave several interviews in Cannes and talked about "her boyfriend" and their life together in Los Angeles being about more than just the industry. It's about more than just us...she said. So I believe they came back because he has been away so much and doesn't leave the children for more than a week if possible. I think she came back with him because she is velcro.
No need to blame Reese PR bullshit on this, there was eyewitness accounts of his behavour and a video to boot.
It's not considered desperate for early showers to remain at the festival is they are in contention to win, P. Cruz and orhers are still there, waiting until the winners are announced.
Spin all youwant, this is not the first time Ryan got drunk on the big stage and no i'm not just talking about Reese, but Abbby too: Last Dec. i Australia when he got drunk and lashed out at the paps at some party he and Abby attended.
It's a pattern. He also has been in NY at least since Thursday, No abby.
Babblers,
are you trashing Ryan in order to make Reese look better or to make us feel sorry for her?
Unless the kods are in NY at the moment, then the kids are not one of the reasons.
I remember reading an arictle where Ryan said that he never had issues with Reese's success, it was never about that. He implied there were other problems. And that was directly from him, in an interview, not a gossip item. Most men are more than happy to be with a successful woman.
"Issues with Reese's success" sounds so much better than the truth - issues with cold, calculated bitch Reese Witherspoon.
Why do I as a TBer have to sypatize with Ryan P? I fucking can't stand this insecure, pretentious douche as I can't stand his pretentious ex. Abbie is an idiot for hooking up with that loser.
3:10 PM, grow up. Neiter of the two were angels in that marriage.
Ryan is full of shit, he did have issues with Reese and her success.
Also when he was doing press for Stop-loss all he talked about was Reese, how he got physically ill when they broke up, still cared about her, blah, blah. At rhe time I thought that he hasn't gotten over her but then I thought even though it bothered him that she was more sucessful, he missed all the opportunites of being Mr. Witherspoon.
At least there aere no kids with Abby and Ryan so she can flee w/o strings attached.
"Ryan is full of shit, he did have issues with Reese and her success."
Bullshit.
3:20 PM, who wouldn't have issues with that bitch?
Reese herself admits to "claiming her part" in the divorce, in a recent interview. Most times, marriages break up because of both people, even if it's just a matter of growing apart.
BTW, I have read some of LawGoddess' slash, and I hope she hasn't quit her day job. Hee!
What is bullshit? At an awards show that he accompanied her to during 2006 award season, an interviewer asked him how he found her performance in WTL and he said somthing like "it wasn't that much of a strech". Does anyone else remember? He was an ass I thought back then. I'm not saying she's nice, I think both are assholes TBH.
but then I thought even though it bothered him that she was more sucessful, he missed all the opportunites of being Mr. Witherspoon /
LMAO!
What opportunites would that be?
Tabloid PR about Reese and her fabolous family life and supportive husband? I bet Ryan is missing that crap! lol
"Reese herself admits to "claiming her part" in the divorce, in a recent interview."
Give us a break with Reese's "down to earth" PR diarea and selling fake public image.
What makes the Reeke stories unbelievable is that it's not equal - Jake is just a prop to make her look good after her divorce, what her mgmt thinks appeals to the US Reekly readership, and they couldn't be more off base. Jake doesn't get equal time with Reese supporting him. Jenn Anniston is more identifiable with, and honest sounding.
Small example of Reese Witherspoon's PR shit:
On the paparazzi: “Fascination is gonna die off. I honestly know it. But it’s just like I keep waiting and waiting, and then it’s just more tabloid magazines, and it keeps going. I don’t take a shower everyday. I don’t put on makeup everyday. I wear a lot of sunglasses, in case you noticed.”
This will probaly be deleted, but whatever. Just because Reese is bearding/dating Jake we don't have to make her out to be a monster. She's an adequately attractive and talented actress. Yes, she's also pretentious and comes off fake often. But there are many, many celebs like that. FYI, I think Jake comes off as pretentious and fake often too, even before Reese.
LOL! I know it's "PR diarreah" but at least it was approaching some semblance of what a divorced woman might be feeling.
I can only speak for myself, but I don't think Reese is a monster, and I don't think Jake is an angel. I know pretension can be the name of the game in the movie biz, which is why some of us adore Heath. This just happens to be a blog where we discuss Jake gossip.
3:42 PM
Reese is too dull to be a monster. She's a manipulative and fake-nice bitch.
We can all agree that Reese comes off as fake and pretentious. But Jakey often too, not as bad though.
The impression I have of Jenn Anniston, is that she has gone on after her divorce on her own. If she finds another man, great, if not, she's going about her own life independently. Just to clarify.
"But Jakey often too, not as bad though."
Examples? (NOT Reeke examples)
which is why some of us adore Heath/
I think he was "too nice" for that tough business. In an interview Lily Cole said, he was like "give, give, give" and Jake described him as very sensitive. No wonder so many liked him. Only the strongest survice though. It's sad but true. Too sensitive people like River and Heath who can't deal with this business often resort to illegal or legal substances which ended deadly for both young men. Very sad.
3:53 PM, it's spelled Jennifer Aniston. Not that it's that important. ;)
"Examples? (NOT Reeke examples)"
Things I saw, heard/read about him led me to believe that even before Reese. I was still a fan, because I liked him as an actor and found him interesting. I still find him interesting otherwise I wouldn't be here. If I recall specific examples I'll let you know.
OK
Sorry, 3:59! :)
I should add that I don't dislike Reese - Reeke, I'm not crazy about. I don't know much about Ryan at all, nor Abbie.
Jennifer Aniston is a publicity whore like Reese.
But unlike Reese, I believe Jennifer is a nice and warm person.
"BTW, I have read some of LawGoddess' slash, and I hope she hasn't quit her day job."
I like STRANDED.
P.S. I don't like babblers.
I think it started out ok, but now it's scraping the bottom of the barrel and running out of fresh ideas.
Jake acting pretentious - Didn't he admit treating his sister badly on the DD set? Like he was the star of the movie? Wasn't there a verbal fight with Saarsgaard on the Jarhead set because of Jake's behaviour? I know all actors like attention to a certain degree, but Jake seems one of those who likes it even off screen a lot of times. I think some pics of him pre Jarhead were photo ops too. This guy wants to become a biggie in the business. He's very ambitous, which isn't bad per se, but some lose their integrity for it.
He was young at the time of DD - I thought he meant it was a healthy competition between siblings, left on the set after work was over? Some ambitious is good, and maybe he's a bit volatile, but I hope he doesn't get consumed by HW.
Jake and Maggie, Jake and Peter - few fights can't spoil that love :)
ITA. :)
I agree with Jake and Maggie, but Jake and Peter, not so sure. ;)
Not so sure about what?
"but I hope he doesn't get consumed by HW."
Isn't bearding for your career and image being comsumed by HW?
