'My experience on Jarhead was lifechanging,' says Jake Gyllenhaal. 'Because I've worked with directors a lot who thought I was a certain thing and fit me into that box, you know. And Sam wasn't like that at all. And Ang is, though I hate the word, an auteur. The last two movies I shot, though I didn't know it at the time, were really about loneliness - and what you find in the loneliest of places. Plains and mountains that go on forever, deserts that are hot and dry with nothing growing ... and go on forever. That's why I gravitated toward them, I suppose.
'Some movies you fall a step behind,' he adds, 'and some you stay in the same place, make the same choices. And then sometimes there are people who know more than you but show you, and that's the maximum you can hope for - doing that with someone who says, "I like you for what you are, and I want you to be in my picture." I didn't have to fake it or put on a mask - all the resources I had inside me were more than adequate. I don't want to pretend to be something ... I'm not pretending any more to fit somebody's mould. That's a longwinded statement but - why not do what you really think, even if it's a mistake?'

Let me more fully explain. Austin is a spineless nobody who hangs on because he's got nothing else. He's useful to Jake because Jake knows he will provide the sex and keep his mouth shut. Jake may have loved in the beginning, but not anymore (which is why I believe its so easy to disregard him) but Austin will be good enough until the real deal comes along.

This remains to be seen. Nailed is meh, Brothers who knows, and he'd better hope PoP doesn't flop! All he really has is an outstanding performance in Brokeback Mountain (and, of course, the walk through fauxmance).
Donnie Darko, Moonlight Mile, Rendition. Regardless of the commercial success of any of these films, that fact that they were commercial releases in which he's had lead roles gives him a profile in Hollywood that Austin wishes he had.
Naile probably will go straight to DVD, but Brothers has a good cast and director so I am sure it will do fine especially if it does well during the festival circuit. With POP, alot will depend on how its marketed. I remember the people who didn't think Heath could pull off the Joker. Jake may just surprise us. A number of my friends think he is underrated.

It's all speculation. Heath is a better actor than Jake, so of course he could pull it off, and got an Academy Award for it.

Totally agree 3:06. I'll also add that they're not joined at the hip. Austin is not bearding and works steadily, something 95% of people who call themselves actors can't claim. I'm not going to attack Austin for staying with someone who is making stupid career choices. And that's what we're talking about, because I think most of us here think that Reeke is pretty much limited to photo opps and other work, they're not living together.

So until I hear otherwise, the possibility certainly exists that it's a fauxmance.

Actually, I would beg to differ about Austin being a nobody as professed by 13:57 and you yourself just helped my case. Just the fact that he's mentioned in comments seems to suggest that he's been noticed. Used to be that no one ever mentioned the guy except on OMG. Seems to me, maybe he's made somewhat of a name for himself if he's worthy of even being mentioned in a comment.
Seems like a low blow to criticize someone just because they do a TV series. Work is work. Doesn't matter if you're a fry cook, a movie theatre usher, a lawyer, a surgeon, a minister, a grocery sacker, or a street crossing guard. Everyone serves a niche in this world. And that applies to makeup artists, wardrobe people, actors, directors, personal assistants, camerapeople, gameshow hosts, and lunch wagon drivers as well. There is no shame for anyone who gets up everyday and punches in to do their 8+ hours of work and puts forth an honest effort.
Lest we also forget those people in the U.S. who have been laid off, told to retire early, let go, or lost their job due to their place of employement going under. Those who were working and want to be working, but there are not enough open jobs to go around for them right now.
Sorry for the rant, but that kind of comment that someone is a "nobody" is just plain callous and not thought through before being spoken.

Austin Nichols is a C-list actor on a D-list show. That is what makes him a nobody in Hollywood. This has nothing to do with his character. And in Hollywood, tv work is still considered beneath film work( even in tv, there are levels of programming and a show like OTH would be considered bottom of the barrel). That is why you will see people trying to get away from television and into film.
Austin went from starring on his own show on HBO to becoming just another cast member on a bottom feeder like OTH. His status may change, but I see nothing to indicate that it will happen anytime soon.
So, Austin's a nobody with a somebody for a boyfriend (which I guess would explain why he hangs on).
Who knows - Jake may be doing a TV series sooner than we think! ;)
And Reese - WTL to 4Cs to voiceovers - maybe the downward spiral looming! ;)

The DC asshole who's in here trashing Heath-Heath was in a movie that just hit the billion mark and is the second highest grossing movie in history. I doubt the fruity POP-which I'm sure will pull in some people because it's a summer tentpole will have that type of seismic impact--although I'm sure Jake's performance will go down in camp history.
I own I'm Not There, and I thought it was great.

Lightning doesn't usually strike twice - you won't find that combination of talent like there was in Brokeback very often. Heath was also nominated for Best Actor. I liked Zodiac and Rendition, but his roles in those were a far cry from Jack Twist. I did think he was great in Moonlight Mile, and I'm not a huge Darko fan.

Yes, maybe he wouldn't have won the Oscar, but I think he would have been nominated still, there was buzz even when he was still alive after the first trailer and 6minutes preview in IMAX came out.
But even if he would not have won if he were alive, he would still have deserved to win IMO.
Heath created two iconic roles in Brokeback Moutain and TDK. The fact that he could do this with such vastly different characters attests to his brilliance as an actor.
Yes he would have been a great inspiration to Jake in terms of how to take control of your career and make your own way.
Of course Heath was wild; artist often are. He was also a very creative man with a vast array of interests. It is also apparant that whatever his personal problems he had gotten those under control when he died. That's just one of the reasons it was so tragic.
Thousands of people die every year from accidental mixes of presciption drugs. We don't always realise how long a drug actually stays in your system. Heath didn't take those drugs at the same time. But they lingered in his system and the eventual combination stopped his heart.

So people do have short memories. I doubt Jake has changed. People didn't know him then; they don't know him now, and they won't know him later. But we all like to project. And we will find (or create) the evidence we need to support whatever belief we have (and discard whatever may contradict it).

If this is true and all the changed opinions are because of the disappointment Jake didn't come out (if he's gay), it's even worse dragging Heath into all this. It's tastless.
My opinion is that Heath was one of the most talented actors of his generation. Jake is good too and maybe can become one of the best of his generation too. He's still young and can become better and better.
Heath doesn't need WFT2 posters to say he was a great actor, most people I know think so and the praise he got from his peers make me think they thought so too.
Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the most over rated actors in HW. People say that he's only 28, but considering the age he first started in films, the family he comes from the number of respected Directors he has worked with not to mention the well known co stars, his career is shit.
