Last year, I made a big deal about Ricky Martin’s coming out.
Revisiting the blog piece today, I realize I was somehow evoking the spirit of the It Gets Better Project. And while I continue extremely critical of this campaign (for many reasons, not the least are its ageist and classist narratives), I do believe the visualization of imagined possibility is important. For the young boy who, like myself in my early teen years, finds himself living in rural México, seeing a public figure with pop culture prominence spanning a few decades might help in the process of imagining and/or visualizing what being a Brown man who loves other men might look like.
Later in the year, I wrote a piece titled “How Ricky Martin is Changing the Face of Latino Fatherhood,” based on Ricky and his two sons' (Valentino and Matteo) appearance on the cover of People En Español’s father’s day issue. Given People En Español’s circulation, the image of an openly gay Latino father and his children, would be in countless Latina/o supermarkets and living rooms. Yet again, the image of Ricky’s queer Latinidad was helping us imagine a more expansive Latinidad that includes more of us.
With Ricky’s reemergence into the public light, we had the opportunity to see a queer Latino strike down racist stereotypes about inherent homophobia in our communities. Perhaps the best example was on The View when Ricky responded to Joy Behar’s suggestion that his culture kept him from coming out. In a moment that made him even more beautiful in my eyes, Ricky refuses to take the bait and simply states that people all over the world are struggling with their sexuality. (Thank you!)
This morning, Ricky's new album "Música + Alma + Sexo" hit stores and I typed faster than my queer fingers could to download it on iTunes. Refusing to shy away from the "sex" in sexuality by daring to have the word "Sexo" in the title of the album, I am excited to see where Ricky takes us as an openly queer historically sensual performer.
Watching two brown men in an affectionate embrace in the “Lo Mejor De Mi Vida Eres Tú” video, I’m pretty darn sure Ricky will continue to matter to me… and maybe a few other boys.

Stephen Fry has revealed he regularly took cocaine to enhance his enjoyment of crossword puzzles.

Look at how JJ played up his singing on the Today Show in the headline and opening, with a mention of the children coming later (and a link to pictures of them last December). This went up pretty quickly after the show. This looks like it's all been planned out and done to not be a big deal when it all comes out in the open.
Also very interesting that Jeff Eastin, the creator of White Collar, apparently answered a fan's question about a week ago about whether USA was preventing Matt from being more open about his sexuality (he said no). But the fact that he answered it is I think all part of what is going on.

32 Chinese women arrested for ‘writing gay erotica’
Police in China have arrested 32 women for allegedly writing erotica for a gay website.
The women, include one 17-year-old, were arrested in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, ShanghaiDaily.com reports. They were reportedly arrested for spreading obscene material.
Police said the website contained 80,000 erotic stories and had 600,000 registered members. The site’s owner reportedly said that his workers were young women in their twenties in cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing.
Last September, reports said that 80 gay men had been detained by police at a cruising spot in woods near Beijing. They were apparently released after being photographed, although one report claimed they had been finger-printed and blood-tested.
China only decriminalised homosexuality in 1997 and it was seen as a mental illness until 2001.

I don't know about that. I know some claimed BBM changed their POV re. homosexuality and I believe that, but they are not in the affected people's shoes who suffered from discrimination or rejection. It would be wrong to say they know about a situation when they probably never witnessed it first hand or aren't in the other people's shoes. They maybe know more about it and have better understanding, but that's it.

Probably each of us has experienced some kind of discrimination or rejection (more or less) in their lives. But some situations are different and often, even if there is knowledge and understandig about it, not comparable.

Of course she knows about what happened, thank God she never witnessed it herself though. Her situation is entirely different than for the Jews in Europe during WW2. I could compare the situation between the Holocaust and the slavery in North America. Had Natalie said she understood the situation of the AAC being discrimated for being a Jewish woman herself, I would understand her claiming to related to them, but I bet you she never suffered from discrimination in this regard IRL. There’s nothing quite like a premiere of one film for revealing nuggets about the next. At the beginning of the month we reported that David Ayer was raising finance for his next gritty LA cop drama End of Watch with Jake Gyllenhaal attached as lead. During the LA junket for the excellent Source Code this weekend, Gyllenhaal confirmed to Access Hollywood that he was about to begin work on Ayer’s film.
Clearly, End of Watch is further ahead than we thought. Progress appears to be swift because, just a week ago at SXSW in Austin, Jake Gyllenhaal confirmed he had a next project that he was excited about but he was not allowed to talk about it. It appears that now he can.
Little is known about the plot of End of Watch, although if you’ve seen David Ayer movies you may have a good idea of its gist already. We do know that it looks at the relationship between two LA cops, which raises the question of who will be Cop 2?

The picture is finally taking shape for an August start, following the delivery of a rewrite by Steve Kloves that has director Albert Hughes and the studio brass excited. The story takes place in the rebuilt New Manhattan where a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment. There are two major roles, and I'm told that for Tetsuo, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy have been given the new script. For the role of Kaneda, the script has been given to Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix. The two leads are expected to come from that group of actors.
Andrew Lazar is producing with Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. Akira has been one of Warner Bros' high priority projects since the studio with Legendary Pictures acquired it for a 7-figure sum 2 years ago from manga publisher Kodansha. The intention has been to make 2 films, each covering 3 books in the series.

Jake Gyllenhaal is spearheading a new campaign to prompt America's publicschools to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
The Brokeback Mountain star, who has carved a reputation as one of Hollywood's top chefs, has become a spokesman for the organisation Edible Schoolyard.
He explains, "We're trying to make it possible to have an edible gardenin every public school in America. Kids can have a new relationship to nature and to their food and to their diet and an understanding where their food comes from. Kids can take classes in these gardens and learn mathematics by counting vegetables and engage in the world in a different way than we're used to in schools. "It's basically to take a piece of the concrete out and put in a gardenwhere children can explore and learn and hopefully it changes them.
I grew up around edible gardens all over the place in Los Angeles and a little bit outside of Boston, and it's changed my perspective on the world andI think it could change the world.

As someone on OMG said, it is likely that Austin is gone, and not "waiting for Sophia". Why would he put his stuff out early for the recycling--because he wasn't going to be there the day they normally pick it up.

All I will say is that bearding in either an informal capacity or a formal one can go on for years. Years and years. And it can produce marriage and children.
I am not in one camp or another as to Austin and Sophia and I don't particularly care one way or the other but as much as you warn people about assuming bearding is foolish at this level there has been bearding way way more sophisticated and complex that has gone on in Hollywood in the past - and happening right now - that would make this look amateurish if it were so.
Bottom line is no one really knows. A lot of people here assume it to be a beard relationship, you or your crew seem to be coming down in favor of Austin and Sophia as real but relying too much on tweets, and movements by text, even photos which could be out of date or set up. Nobody really knows.
The issue for me is less about what we as the public perceive and more about what they as stars/publicists perceive, and the importance they hold themselves in. What may seem like a not very worthwhile C list career to us (and therefore not worth bearding for) may look very different from the inside of the game where money is involved. Or not. We cannot take anything seen or read on the internet as a rounded truthful view.

Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch & Chris Pine Eyed To Replace Jake Gyllenhaal In Doug Liman’s ‘Moon’
Yes, it’s those same familiar names all over again. This time their coming up for a project we figured was stuck in development hell, but we’re surprised and delighted to see some movement.
THR reports that Doug Liman‘s long-gestating, untitled Moon project is moving forward and beginning to find a cast, but Jake Gyllenhaal, long attached to the film won’t be boarding. Instead, Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch and Chris Pine have all met to take over the lead part and yes, your eyes don’t deceive you, two of those three names also were slated on the “Akira” shortlist yesterday (Hollywood knows what it likes, and what young actors can get films made). But that’s not all, a female lead is also being sought and it’s a bit more of a diverse group, though many of these names have also been tossed around the tentpole ring for various projects over the past few months and they include Rosario Dawson, Megan Fox, Rachel McAdams, Eva Mendes, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde.
The picture is about as high concept as they come following a group of renegade space employees, led by an Eastern European woman (though we’d guess the nationality might change depending on who they get to sign on), who are assembling a bunch of stolen space equipment to get to the Moon to steal an energy source, but there is one last thing they need to grab before they can leave: an ex-NASA employee.
It sounds great, but we’re a bit worried about the battery of writers who have tackled this thing. Previously the project was under the pen of Liman and John Hamburg (”I Love You, Man”) before Mark Bowden (the “Black Hawk Down” novel) took a pass at it, and then Dan Mazeau (”Bruno”), followed by the film’s producer Simon Kinberg (”xXx: State Of The Union”). Ken Nolan (the movie “Black Hawk Down”) was the latest scribe tasked with the movie, but that was two years ago, so it appears he’s finally locked it down.
And while Liman recently added to his plate a biopic about Morris Abraham “Two-Gun” Cohen, it looks like the Moon project has taken the pole position. So if he can get his cast in place—Paramount is not greenlighting anything until they see who the leads are, so don’t bet on an Emile Hirsch/Megan Fox pairing making this thing fly—the plan is to start shooting the film at the end of the summer.
Of the many projects on Liman’s plate, this is certainly one—along with “Attica” perhaps—that we’re most excited about. As for “All You Need Is Kill,” it’s still at Warner Bros. but it’s not a priority project. Liman is a big name, and shouldn’t have any problems attracting the talent, so we hope this Moon flick can get into orbit.
