Last year, I made a big deal about Ricky Martin’s coming out.
Revisiting the blog piece today, I realize I was somehow evoking the spirit of the It Gets Better Project. And while I continue extremely critical of this campaign (for many reasons, not the least are its ageist and classist narratives), I do believe the visualization of imagined possibility is important. For the young boy who, like myself in my early teen years, finds himself living in rural México, seeing a public figure with pop culture prominence spanning a few decades might help in the process of imagining and/or visualizing what being a Brown man who loves other men might look like.
Later in the year, I wrote a piece titled “How Ricky Martin is Changing the Face of Latino Fatherhood,” based on Ricky and his two sons' (Valentino and Matteo) appearance on the cover of People En Español’s father’s day issue. Given People En Español’s circulation, the image of an openly gay Latino father and his children, would be in countless Latina/o supermarkets and living rooms. Yet again, the image of Ricky’s queer Latinidad was helping us imagine a more expansive Latinidad that includes more of us.
With Ricky’s reemergence into the public light, we had the opportunity to see a queer Latino strike down racist stereotypes about inherent homophobia in our communities. Perhaps the best example was on The View when Ricky responded to Joy Behar’s suggestion that his culture kept him from coming out. In a moment that made him even more beautiful in my eyes, Ricky refuses to take the bait and simply states that people all over the world are struggling with their sexuality. (Thank you!)
This morning, Ricky's new album "Música + Alma + Sexo" hit stores and I typed faster than my queer fingers could to download it on iTunes. Refusing to shy away from the "sex" in sexuality by daring to have the word "Sexo" in the title of the album, I am excited to see where Ricky takes us as an openly queer historically sensual performer.
Watching two brown men in an affectionate embrace in the “Lo Mejor De Mi Vida Eres Tú” video, I’m pretty darn sure Ricky will continue to matter to me… and maybe a few other boys.

Totally off topic, but since the movie has been mentioned here, I thought I'd mention that I saw Margin Call at the New Director's film festival last night--it's the movie made by Zachary Quinto's production company.
An amazing cast, and everyone is really terrific in it, particularly Spacey, Irons and Bettany. I'm not sure it will have wide appeal as it's about a financial trading crises, but they manage to make it interesting, exciting, and ultimately it's really more of a character study.

Quinto is in Margin Call too, a smaller role, and he was fine in it too, as was Stanley Tucci, another performer I forgot to mention who was really terrific. It's kind of amazing how many people they got for such a small, first-time film. Others in it include Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Penn Badgley, Assif Mandvi and Mary McDonald.
Also saw Source Code at a screening on Monday. I think Jake is good in it and he movie is really funny in parts. It largely works, although parts are internally not logical, and I think the last third of the movie becomes too conventional and keeps it from being a great or memorable movie (unlike Moon), but it's a good popcorn movie. Even my girlfriend, who normally doesn't like films of this type, really enjoyed it.
The fact that Jack regularly spews on OMG is proof that OMG allows people to talk about anything they want.
I'm not the only one WFT2 poster who quit posting on OMG. I got tired of being called troll just because I believe that common sense, logic and facts shouldn't be ignored.

Oh OMG gets hits all right. I remember that a few months after Jake watch folded someone pointed out that it had more traffick than OMG. JW always had their sitemeter visible, still does.
OMG had their sitemeter open as well, this is when they had a bunch of people still posting there peegee and JW numbers were still higher than OMG.
It showed that while no one was even posting on JW, people were still reading it.
What it did show was that while JW viewers stayed on an average of 5 min, the OMG viewrs stayed anywhere between 10-20 min, od why would one person want to stay on for 20 min like a chat room.
So let SK show you her "stats", I bet they are BS just like she is.

OMG is neither better nor more popular than WFT nor any other Jake site, that crown belongs to IHJ still despite it's decline.
SK has a skewed view of things and that includes the site and it's "importance" which it isn't.
PR visitis and monitors all fan sites.

Also SK made OMG sitemeter invisible after it was pointed out that there were more people reading JW which was closed but that the viewers on OMG were viewing longer than normal, I think the average time was 15 minutes or so per viewer while JW was about 3 min.

I think it's fine here - the moderator does a good job of deleting objectionable posts, while still allowing for differences of opinion. There's less nastiness than before.

I usually post about things other than J&A and BT, the only time I say something is when someone comes over here to attack OMG. It happens on an almost daily basis lately. Seems like they'd rather do that than talk about Jake's movies or his appearances to promote SC.

I don't think everyone here attacks OMG. OMG is never more pleasant than when moderation is on, unfortunately. OMG and WFT2 are sister sites.
Is it really the end of the world if someone says something negative about OMG? OMG and it's readers have faith and confidence in their site - so I don't think they care. I don't always agree with everything they post, but I certainly personally respect their thoughts, and I think for the most part it's mutual over there. If the moderators don't care about the negativity, I don't think anyone else should either, unless you have been deputized to go over to other sites and battle with them. Give it a rest, and ignore the naysayers.

We had a new poster not too long ago who jumped into the fray and she was a friendly sort. But she drew the line when talk began to center around multiple BT's. So she left and hasn't been back since.
She stated her opinion and she didn't get beaten up or criticized at all for it. I totally respect that. She wasn't rude about it, didn't snark at those of us who do believe there are more than one. Her & I had a slight misunderstanding but we sorted it out without either of us getting rude at one another and I don't believe one single "Don't play stupid" was even uttered.

I frequent a variety of Jake sites, but to make such an allegation is absolute nonsense. I bet there are plenty of readers who don't consider themselves in any particular camp, but are interested in exploring different points of view about Jake. No way is any moderator destroying anything. But, there is no doubt that some feel threaten with OMG for whatever reason. Destiny and PG are right. I read OMG 2-3 times a week and they never knock Waiting for Toothy. Yet, people regularly attack OMG. Personally, I think it's because of what they discuss. Maybe too close to home in terms of what's really going on in Jake's life.

Several years ago, I lived for a few months at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood. (For those who aren't familiar with it, Chateau Marmont is a hotel favored by many celebrities partially for the fact that no photography is allowed in the public areas of the hotel.) One Saturday night, I was headed down to the lobby. I decided to avoid the elevator and the main staircase and take a little used back staircase instead. As I rounded a corner I saw Kirsten Dunst leaning against the wall, gazing into Jake Gyllenhaal's eyes. It was a clearly romantic and intimate moment and, until I happened upon them, it was also a totally private moment since there wasn't a single person that could have seen them due to where they were standing. In other words, this was not being done for paparazzi cameras. Clearly, Jake likes the ladies.
