Music + Soul + Sex

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

Last year, I made a big deal about Ricky Martin’s coming out.

Revisiting the blog piece today, I realize I was somehow evoking the spirit of the It Gets Better Project. And while I continue extremely critical of this campaign (for many reasons, not the least are its ageist and classist narratives), I do believe the visualization of imagined possibility is important. For the young boy who, like myself in my early teen years, finds himself living in rural México, seeing a public figure with pop culture prominence spanning a few decades might help in the process of imagining and/or visualizing what being a Brown man who loves other men might look like.

Later in the year, I wrote a piece titled “How Ricky Martin is Changing the Face of Latino Fatherhood,” based on Ricky and his two sons' (Valentino and Matteo) appearance on the cover of People En Español’s father’s day issue. Given People En Español’s circulation, the image of an openly gay Latino father and his children, would be in countless Latina/o supermarkets and living rooms. Yet again, the image of Ricky’s queer Latinidad was helping us imagine a more expansive Latinidad that includes more of us.

Musica+Alma+Sexo cover
With Ricky’s reemergence into the public light, we had the opportunity to see a queer Latino strike down racist stereotypes about inherent homophobia in our communities. Perhaps the best example was on The View when Ricky responded to Joy Behar’s suggestion that his culture kept him from coming out. In a moment that made him even more beautiful in my eyes, Ricky refuses to take the bait and simply states that people all over the world are struggling with their sexuality. (Thank you!)

This morning, Ricky's new album "Música + Alma + Sexo" hit stores and I typed faster than my queer fingers could to download it on iTunes. Refusing to shy away from the "sex" in sexuality by daring to have the word "Sexo" in the title of the album, I am excited to see where Ricky takes us as an openly queer historically sensual performer.

Watching two brown men in an affectionate embrace in the “Lo Mejor De Mi Vida Eres Tú” video, I’m pretty darn sure Ricky will continue to matter to me… and maybe a few other boys.

Director Jones (the son of David Bowie) throws us into the middle of things from the very first scene, so that we start off as disoriented as the protagonist, watching the movie kick into gear as a puzzle to be solved.

Great! Can't wait to see.

Interview: Jake Gyllenhaal, Actor and Producer for Source Code said...

This weekend in theaters you have to check out Actor and Executive Producer, Jake Gyllenhaal‘s latest sci-fi action thriller, Source Code (read review). Gyllenhaal was given the option that every actor dreams about, being asked “who do you want to work with and on what?” His answer? Moon director Duncan Jones and writer Ben Ripley’s script for Source Code.

Gyllenhaal seemed especially on point during the interview. This is definitely a project he has a lot riding on and has put a lot into. Find out what it took to get the project going and what it was like for him to make…
...
Q: Did it help to have that much structure rather than popping all around?

JG: I great faith in the script and knew that it worked. And knew that no matter how we shot it, and had great faith in the fact that we had Don Burgess shooting the movie, we had Paul Hirsch cutting the movie, we had Mark Gordon and Jordan Wynn producing the movie. So to me, if we had shot it completely out of order — I don’t know. I think we might’ve shot the first scene last because I asked if we could shoot it again. The thing about playing this character is you learn so much even as you go on, that you want to play on those clues even earlier on. To me, it was an advantage but it also felt a bit sometimes like a disadvantage because I would have loved to — every clue you put in, you know someone can come back and watch it again and go, “Aha!” I had those “aha!” moments. I would’ve preferred it anyway because I knew the script worked so well.

Vanity Fair said...

...
Q: Is Source Code better than Inception?

A: Source Code is sillier than Inception, but it also expects a little more out of the audience. Put it this way: by the end of Inception, everything is explained—over and over and over. That’s not really the case by the end of Source Code.

Q: Should I see Source Code?

A: Yes. As you’re watching Source Code, a lot of it makes no sense whatsoever. But the ending explains why things that wouldn’t seem possible are most likely possible. At least, I think it does. Regardless, Source Code is a lot of fun.

Q: What’s the best thing about Source Code?

A: Thankfully, Source Code isn’t feature-length jack-off material for its director (Duncan Jones) like last week’s Sucker Punch was. In other words, the highest compliment I can give is that there is nothing for Zack Snyder to masturbate to in Source Code.

Q: If you’re going to be blurbed in this weekend’s commercial for Source Code, what quote do you think will be used?

A: “There is nothing for Zack Snyder to masturbate to in Source Code!” —Mike Ryan, Vanity Fair

Jake Gyllenhaal gay? Abbracciato a un uomo! Tutte le foto! said...

2 Aprile 2011

Jake Gyllenhaal, what were you doing there?

Google translate:

What were you doing with that big hand on the butt quell'omaccione? We are confident that there will never explain. One thing however is certain: there is a reason, whether in Hollywood, Italy and many other parts of the world entries about your alleged homosexuality continue to increase dramatically. We try to reconstruct the story: the photos show Jake on the set of Bubble Boy. You may think you're kidding: after all, a professional actor must do whatever is asked of him. The point is that all this was not absolutely required!

Summit is conservatively estimating Friday's grosses for director Duncan Jones' thriller Source Code. But, once again, Jake Gyllenhaal can't open a movie to $20M which is what bonafide movie stars are supposed to do, but at least this isn't a complete disaster like his recent pics.

Whether the movie is bad or good Jake always has an about 10-15 mil. weekend opening. Same with Zodiac which got rave reviews and did just as badly as his films with mixed or bad reviews. It seems it's always the same people watchig all of his movies, good or bad. Weird.

Like with Zodiac, Brothers, LaOD etc...it will be 2 or 3 weeks in the top five ad end up grossing between 30 and 35 million dollars. As all of his films.

You must get some pretty strong responses about Brokeback Mountain as well.
I’ve had people say stuff to me—stuff like, “Brokeback Mountain changed my life”—and then I’ve had people come up to me and say, “I’d never see that movie.” What I find amazing is some audiences’ inability to separate characters from the actors who play them.

So you don’t go to Mexico anymore? Is that what you mean?
[Laughs] I don’t even know how to answer that. The truth is, when my character goes to Mexico and picks up that dude in the alleyway, it’s actually the cinematographer.

Wait. So director Ang Lee was just like, “We need a creepy- looking Latino guy. Hey, you!”
Yes, that’s exactly what happened. I had to do, like, 15 takes. I couldn’t hold my shit together ’cause it was Rodrigo.

When you put on plaid, do you think about your character? Do you think about my character?
Uh, no? Do you have buddies who are like, “I’m not gonna go camping with you anymore!”? Oh, man. This interview is really going south...not that far south!

As for Jake Gyllenhaal's Source Code?

RELATED: What are 2011's biggest box-office bombs…so far?

The thriller wasn't expected to revive Hollywood's dead year, and its modest second-place finish didn't.

Sure, Source Code did all right, debuting with $15.1 million off a $32 million budget, but this was not the weekend to get into budget talk, not when, as pointed out by Exhibitor Relations, third-place Insidious, a no-name horror flick, nearly made as much as the Gyllenhaal-toplined Source Code, but cost only $1 million to produce.

But Jake has been in the business for many years and is getting leading man roles for half a decade now, but still hasn't delivered a solid b.o. hit despite some good movies like Zodiac or SC. Take a look at DiCaprio whose acting style is similar to Jake's, but who, unlike Jake, is quite uncharismatic off screen, but his movie promotion still lures the masses. So what is Jake's problem?

Ang Lee on Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams Falling in Love on the Set of “Brokeback Mountain:”

“Well, it started happening shortly after rehearsal. I know Heath had just broken up with Naomi [Watts]. And of course, I kept pushing him towards Jake (laughs). I don’t know what I did.

I have to tell a story about how serious an actress Michelle is. The first kissing scene by the staircase, that’s the first kissing scene that we did. It was like the first week of shooting with Jake. So, the guys worked out and I was happy. The guys were exhausted from the different angles we shot it. Then we turn around to shoot Michelle’s reaction. So, we talk about how she was crushed, she was blank, she doesn’t know what hits her. It takes the rest of the movie to see how pissed she is, everything. And so the guys were down there sort of leaning on each other for her to look at and she wanted them to start kissing and mess around. She could hardly see them (laughing)! They were just there to help her. So they started necking and she was not happy about it. Then they started kissing and she was like, ‘Come on guys, I need it!’ I was very impressed. And when I see on the monitor her face, that one moment… Again, no dialogue. And it’s very hard to show what she thinks. But I just think, for one second it’s really worth it.”

Anyway,I think Mr.Ang should have STFU.

Ang Lee: That was before the set was built, when that started. I know it was love at first site. ... I think it was a process about breaking up with Naomi. I don't get into their private lives, but that is what I saw. ...

Either MW is a major idiot and didn't see the most obvious or she thought it could develop into something real...with the help of a baby...

It wa sher who told him to leave, probably because he travelled too much to LA to meet with his friends of The Masses. He was desvastated after the split because he stop seeing his daughter everyday. If Michelle would have wanted to, he would have come back with her only to be near his child again.

It happens very often that a man mix his feeling about their kids with the ones for their kid's mothers. I really think men have the worst side on a disoldes relationship that envolves children :(

Anonymous said...

In an old interview Heath admitted he hated wearing condoms. He probably relied on the woman to use protection.

There was an article on People that Heath supposedly impregnated a 25 y/o when he was 17 in Perth. The woman's hubby said he wanted a DNA test to prove that Heath wasn't the father, but the mother refused and said she didn't want her and her family to deal with that. Hm.

That's right. I think both actors are watchable, prefer Jake's RL personality though. But still the one is the born star the other, we will see.

IMO Michelle was very naive and Heath a user.

All that said, no matter if he was a player with the ladies, he seemed to be a good, fun friend and Jake seemed crazy about him. So. :)

Not accusing Michelle of anything or hating on her. Not at all. But if you look at pics of Heath, public and candids, he seemed happy most of the time, but when he was in the middle of his relationship with Michelle he seemed more and more depressed. I wanted to see him happy again, maybe with Gemma? I never expected he'd end the way he did. :(

A accidental deadly combination/ overdose of prescription medication- whatever the hell it was-- does not make one a sociopath.

Anonymous said...

He took enough pills to kill a mule.

And even if it was accidental, the over the top self- medication had a lot to do with some kind of disconfort with what was happening around him. In the last couple of years before his death it looked like everything was bothering him and didn't seem to be comfortable in his own skin as he used to be at the begining.
Of course this is just my opinion and yours, althougt is different,is as valid as mine.

I also think for some reason he could't stand Michelle anymore. That pic was taken shortly before rumors started they might break up in March 2007.

I think it was brave of Michelle to decide to have a baby with a guy who had a drug and alcohol habit. I had a friend who was in love with a laid back, skilled guy, but who was on some substances. She knew she couldn't change his ways and instead she found herself a solid, reliable, though less interesting, guy to have a family with. I think it was the right decision.

Eh. The box office was ok Hop was in a lot more theatres than SC. Compared to the reaction PoP and LoaD received, I'm sure Jake is pleased. Yeah,he's not Will Smith whose name will automatically open a movie most of the time at #1. But you gotta start somewhere, I've always believed Jake needs to be part of a good ensemble film.

^^ I went to see an early movie yesterday before 3pm. The cineplex was full of parents and kids, and the Adults had at least 2 to 3 children in tow to see HOP. Some had more.

I figured, just as predicted, HOP would be top this weekend.

Something I would like to know, It's a little after 5pm here on the east coast. Why are BO numbers out now as opposed to, say after 6pm pacific time Sunday evening, 9pm east coast time?

The theatres ARE still open out there are they not?
Just sayin.

I'm no box office expert/ statistician... they always say the box office totals are estimiates, right?

So I'm thinking they look at Friday and Saturday's totals-- the days most people go to movies-- estimate the Sunday total and voila there they have the weekend box office.

You can expand on your argument though and ask... even on the east coast why release the totals Sunday afternoon. The theatres on the east coast are still open Sunday nights as well!

Anonymous said...

^^ I agree

but, Fridays are not true weekend also because "most" people work during the day and students are in school the most part of day on Friday. Most people are off all day on Sundays just as Saturdays.

I also think the predictions are before the release day and Sunday evenings, east coast time, the box office results are tallied up and released. This has always confused me maybe because I don't know exactly how they come to the final results with the difference of movie closings east coast / west coast. I did think Limitless would be a top BO hit at least the first week.

Not a country music fan, but I'm watching the Country Music Awards. They just made a gay joke abt. Jake:

Reba McIntyre and some other country dude are hosting, she's telling him the do's and don'ts of hosting.

She says don't make Taylor Swift mad or she'll write a song about you, Reba then says what was Jake Gyllenhaal thinking when he broke up with her, "she's sweet, taleneted, etc"

They guy host says "Well, he was in Brokeback Mountain"

Anonymous said...

I hope you don't find that homophobic joke by that redneck Blake whoevr funny? A gay joke? It's more if a lame BBM joke which is so 2006.

Well I guess if Jake can bring up BBM to explain away they gay rumors on Kimmel then this redneck can.

What was Jake thinking of anyway?Trying to get a new audience for LAOD and SC? Taylor's fanbase are 17 year old girls, it would have made more sense if he was "dating" her during Pop, a Disney flick.

I'm sure the audience thought it was a hoot, how many awards did the little girl pick up tonight anyway?

That remark by Blake Shelton is absolutely uncalled for.

Regardless of Jake's bearding, his lying, etc. That really has nothing to do with what that guy said and I am so disappointed in Reba McEntire for participating in that. She should be ashamed of herself.

When you see jokes like this that continue to confuse Jake with his role as Jack Twist, it's no wonder that Jake at times has tried to distance himself from the movie.

I don't want to see him distance himself from BBM but this joke, I don't know what exactly it is, but it just seems ugly to me. Jake did nothing to deserve it.

destiny said...

For me it's not the associating Jake with his BBM character, it's the treating being gay as something to laugh at.

Don't think Jake should get so much blame for SC opening. Neither the Adjustment Bureau with Damon or the Lincoln Lawyer with McBongo did well despite them being considered stars and the films getting good reviews. Same for Unstoppable earlier in the year with Denzel Washington.

It really does seem like audiences are not coming out for sophisticated, adult action films, as opposed to the dreck. Only children's movies have done well this spring. Could be with the economy that people are just not going to the movies, because even the top films haven't exactly been mega hits.

prairiegirl said...

Oh, I do agree, Destiny. It was not a funny exchange whatsoever. Regardless of what movie or character they referenced, that kind of comment was tasteless and it was wrong. But again, the movie Brokeback Mountain is being used as a joke reference.

It's already being tweeted about. I am really disappointed in Reba McEntire.

Taylor Swift's Friends Think Ex Jake Gyllenhaal Is Gay said...

Friends of Taylor Swift, including country super stars Reba Mcentire and Blake Shelton have taken aim at movie star Jake Gyllenhaal for dumping Taylor, suggesting the actor might be gay.

McEntire spoke out during the Country Music Awards last night and questioned the hunk's reasons for ending the brief romance at Christmas...and singer Shelton offered an idea.

The Ultimate TAYLOR SWIFT Video Playlist!!

The flame-haired star quizzed, "She's (Swift) beautiful, she's talented, she's sweet. What in the world was Jake Gyllenhaal thinking anyway?"

Shelton quipped, "Wait a minute, he was in Brokeback Mountain!"

Gyllenhaal played a gay cowboy opposite Heath Ledger in the acclaimed movie.

Do you guys think Jake Gyllenhaal might be gay??

Anonymous said...

Oh dear, bearding is supposed to hide gayness, not promote it!

Joe Jonas Dishes On Exes Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Girlfriend Ashley Greene & Gay Rumors

Joe Jonas is only 21 and the star has already dated Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato and Camilla Belle, and is currently seeing “The Twilight Saga’s” Ashley Greene. He has also been the subject of persistent gay rumors – all things he now says he might channel into his music.

“I think all artists have a right to write about what happens to them,” the middle JoBro told Details for their April 2011 issue.

“But I have a right to write about things too,” he told the mag when asked about his 2008 headline making split with Taylor Swift.

The pop star would not divulge if his upcoming solo album would feature a song specifically about Taylor, but did reveal it would definitely explore heartache.

”[It’s about] different love scenarios that I’ve been through, breakups, hurts. Me hurting somebody and feeling bad about it. I think there’s a lot of scenarios where people might wanna hear my side of the story,” he told the mag.

One source of song inspiration might be his 2009 breakup from a woman in the entertainment industry whose identity is being kept under wraps.

“I won’t say her name,” Joe said. “But I was in a relationship, and we tried to work things out, and she, you know – I was really upset because she – she broke up with me.”

When asked about Demi, whom he dated in 2010, the singer said, “I wish her the best.”

As for his current ladylove, Ashley Greene, Joe appreciates how giving the actress is.

“I think what works about it is she really puts my feelings first. She understands my busy schedule,” he told the mag. “She’ll fly out to my shows – she’s been to places in South America that I can’t even pronounce.”

Joe also addressed persistent rumors that he’s gay in the interview.

“There’s nothing wrong with being gay,” he told the mag “But I’m not.”

Wow, so Reba McIntire and Blake Shelton pretty much reinforced the stereotype that country music stars (and fans?) are a bunch of ignorant buffoons. A Brokeback Mountain joke. How original. How witty.

Morons. I hope they get a bunch of shit for it. And why did they go there anyway. Why did they feel the need to "defend" Taylor Swift? Didn't she win some big award? She's hardly some poor thing that needs defending.

Anonymous said...

And why did they go there anyway.

Why not? Did you hear Ricky Gervais?

It wasn't about trashing a celebrity for being fake or stupid. That's not even what they were doing - they probably don't even think Jake is gay. What they were doing was trying to defend one of "their own" - Taylor Swift, that "beautiful, talented, sweet" girl, and appeal to their apparently ignorant fan base, with a lame, over-used, old, old, joke that wasn't funny back when Brokeback came out and isn't funny now.

Anonymous said...

Why not? Did you hear Ricky Gervais?

This has nothing to do with Ricky Gervais. Jake is not gay because he was in Brokeback Mountain, and the more people keep using that stupid, homophobic type of "joke" the harder it is for celebs to come out and the easier it is for Jake to point and say "See, that's the reason for all the gay rumors - Brokeback Mountain."

Anonymous said...

It wasn't about trashing a celebrity for being fake or stupid.

Too bad Jake is fake and was stupid.

Anonymous said...

Jake is not gay because he was in Brokeback Mountain

It was a simple way to suggest he's gay. I believe adults know what being an actor means, only fangirls use "you think he's gay because he was in BBMt" bullshit as an "argument".

Anonymous said...

The "funny" thing is that in this stupid, infantile world, Jake would be considered some kind of hero for straight guys. He sweet talked hot bimbo Taylor Swift and convinced her to sleep with him and then after he got her in bed a couple of times, ditched her with some poor excuse.

Something irreversible happened with Jake's image, that the only thing that came up after Jake/Taylor affair was the persistence of Jake's gayness jokes.

Anonymous said...

Hero for straight guys - Jake's acting isn't good enough for that + in paparazzi/twitter pictures Jake looked bored to tears next to equaly bored and not hot Taylor Swift.

destiny said...

I wonder if straight guys, especially younger ones, have a negative reaction to male actors that are splashed all over the tabloids that way Jake was.

Anonymous said...

I think average straight guys don't pay any attention to tabloids, but every other media reports goossip and Hollywood PR fiction so they can't avoid to hear about "perfect boyfriend who loves to spend money on his girlfriends" and similar bullshit. When did you hear something like that about George or Leo? Never.

Anonymous said...

Heath would be 32 today

Still young. I've a hunch that he would have gotten the role in 127 Hours instead of Franco if he was alive.

destiny said...

As good as I though Heath was, I don't think he had the intensity and manic energy that 127 Hours called for.

I know guys don't pay real attention to tabloids, but they surely can't help noticing them while waiting in line at the stores, or if girlfriends/wives are reading them.

I think guys like actors they view as cool, and imo appearing on tabloid covers that scream how in love you are is not cool for a male actor to do.

Still think Jake really shot himself in the foot with all that tabloid nonsense, especially after the Swift disaster, which I think is still too fresh in people's minds to forget.
