Speaking to Vanity Fair ahead of the trailer’s release, Gilroy described Velvet Buzzsaw as “a satirical thriller set in the big-money art world of L.A.” The filmmaker was struck by the idea after visiting the Dia contemporary-art gallery in Beacon, New York two years ago.
ReplyDelete“It was the Tuesday after Christmas, at about 5 o'clock in the afternoon, and no one was there,” said Gilroy. “I was wandering around this huge, empty warehouse with all this rather disturbing contemporary art. And I wound up in the basement in a video installation with, like, dentist chairs and rats running around. And I just thought, ‘Man, this would be a great place for a horror movie.’ By the time he got home to Russo, his wife, an hour later, he had hatched a rough plot. “The idea that artists invest their souls in their work and it’s more than a commodity—that has always interested me. I suddenly saw a way of incorporating it all, to explore how, when art and commerce are dangerously out of balance, bad things can happen. It clicked very quickly.”
Gilroy began writing the script around an ensemble, with characters specifically in mind for Gyllenhaal and Russo.
“Jake plays Morf Vandewalt, who’s a contemporary art critic,” explained Gilroy. “And his character is the protagonist who leads us through the film and he takes us deeper and deeper into a mystery that leads to a final shocking realization. Rene plays Rhodora Haze, who started in a punk band in the 70s and now runs the biggest contemporary art gallery in Los Angeles. She was a musician who turned her back away from art to making money and she’s been very good at it.”
“John Malkovich plays the most successful contemporary artist in the world, whose name is Piers,” said Gilroy. “And his word has diminished to the point that he’s unable to create because he stopped drinking. So he’s an alcoholic who’s on the wagon and it's affected his creativity deeply. And Toni Collette plays a character who starts off as a curator at the foremost contemporary art museum in Los Angeles. And she decides to go for the money and becomes an art advisor.”
The ensemble is rounded out by Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer, Tom Sturridge, Daveed Diggs, and Billy Magnussen. Gilroy—who calls himself “a contemporary-art aficionado who doesn’t collect”—went down a rabbit hole of research about the contemporary art world, working with multiple advisors during the course of process of writing and filming.
“Contemporary art really began as a movement to provoke and challenge,” said Gilroy. “And it now has been completely co-opted by big money and business. And it’s a world that’s off its axis. It’s a world that’s in conflict with itself which, for me, is the perfect setting for a film—a world that has that much inherent dramatic potential. Now that dynamic probably exists in a lot of other artistic endeavors. It could be the music business, it could be the movie business. I'll leave others to judge that. But I think it is something that’s a global phenomenon of the over-monetization of art,” Gilroy said, citing a 2017 report that found that 25 artists were responsible for almost half of the postwar and contemporary art auction sales in the first half of that year. Their work sold for a combined $1.2 billion. “This over consolidation toward branding and names crowds out new talent.”
As for what he wants audiences take from the film, Gilroy said, “I hope people look at art in a slightly different way. Any time you listen to a piece of music or look at a sculpture or a painting or a film, you realize the artists behind that have invested what I believe to be their creative soul into the work. To me, that’s a bit of a sacred thing and I think we’ve lost that a little bit. I would love it if we could return to that.”

Someone had asked what the history was, and there are a few important details left out.
Back when Brokeback Mountain came out (2005), some of us were so affected by such a beautiful story, that when rumors started about Jake being gay, his fans wanted to support him. And that was all. The blog then was the original WFT, started by a person called Danielle.
Eventually, Dany ended the blog, and WFT2 was started by one of the readers, SK. PG came along in the second or third wave during this time. Some went off the deep end and carried things too far, dominating the conversations, bullying those who disagreed with them about anything, and following them from blog to blog harassing them. Yes, they were caught redhanded.
Sundance Film Festival takes place in Park City, Utah, a location as obscure as many of the films showcased. Yet the festival unearths many of the year’s sleeper hits while attracting celebrities to the picturesque main street surrounded by snow covered mountains.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon supposedly met on the set of Rendition in 2007, right after her divorce when her career was in decline and when Brokeback (released wide at the end of 2005) left gay rumors swirling around Jake with the film deep in the public consciousness in 2006. As said above, the years after that were when rumours about Jake were the most intense. There's your perfect shitstorm that made bearding necessary for Jake and convenient for Reese. Keep her name in the press with the hot young thing, Jake. Rendiition, which was loaded with expensive talent and predicted to flop in production with the studio unhappy, indeed flopped Another reason to put your two stars together. And yet Jake and Reese – both who have been private before and since – were conveniently cuddling in public.

Now you can believe all you want that Jake was not marriage material and that was the reason, but people I know in the industry at the time were saying that Reese was with Toth before 2010. CONCLUSION: She had to "dump Jake" and end the bearding respectably. She had to wait to announce the real relationship so that she wouldn't come off as trash and Jake's bearding wouldn't be seen as fake. She didn't wait long, though....
This kind of thing has been going on in Hollywood for years, and it's clear that Jake has been at it a while. Try not to be so gullible.

The couple moved to the area before their first daughter was born in 2006, but now that the kids are grown. “The motivation for moving was to be able to walk [the children] to school,” the Deuce actor told the WSJ.
The home itself is a beaut: It’s a four-story townhouse located on a block that’s part of the recently expanded Park Slope Historic District. While the house dates back to the 1880s, the couple hired architect Elizabeth Roberts (who knows a thing or two about renovating Brooklyn townhouses) to revamp it. It has four bedrooms (including a full-floor master bedroom with an office and sumptuous bathroom, complete with wooden bathtub imported from Scotland), several working fireplaces (two of which are from the Dutch company Rais), and a projector screen on the parlor floor.

He’s trying to build up his own group of guys he can make movies with, like the way Ben and Matt [Affleck and Damon] or George and Brad [Clooney and Pitt] or James and Seth [Franco and Rogen] do it. You know, like writing and producing and acting together with the same group on a regular basis.
He’s always worked alone.

I owe Jake Gyllenhaal an apology.
ReplyDeleteA few summers ago I was visiting a friend in New York, and we went out to dinner at a small, casual place in Greenwich Village. As the salad arrived, I glanced toward a corner table where a man and an older woman were deep in conversation.
“I think that’s Jake Gyllenhaal,” I said.
My friend glanced over.
“That’s Jake Gyllenhaal,” she confirmed.
“Tell me not to go say hello to him,” I said.
“Do not go say hello to him,” she said.
So, out of respect for his privacy, I didn’t. Not through the remains of the salad, not through the pizza or the dessert or our request for a second glass of wine. Then the bill came and I drained my wine glass.
“I think I’m going to go say hello to Jake Gyllenhaal,” I said.
“I dare you,” my friend said, proof, if more were needed, that alcohol impairs judgment.
Moments later, there I was, interrupting Jake’s conversation, extending my hand, telling him I liked his work, that I knew one of his relatives, and other stuff that retroactive embarrassment has blotted from my memory.
To his credit, Jake was nice. He didn’t seem especially interested, but he shook my hand and let me babble. It was his courtesy in the face of the intrusion that made me think as I turned away, “I am never doing that to a celebrity again.”
This encounter came to mind Tuesday when Jake started trending on Twitter for his role as Mysterio in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”
Remembering that moment in the restaurant, I wondered: How many of us have intruded on a celebrity only to realize later that celebrities deserve their privacy, even out in public?
A certain loss of privacy is one price of fame, and most celebrities, I assume, have learned to live with it. I also assume that celebrities like to hear that people like their work.
But the famous actor who takes the corner table out of the fray and is deep in conversation is posting a “No Entry” sign. So, presumably, is the celebrity who wears a baseball cap and sunglasses indoors in public.
That’s how Martin Clunes, the star of “Doc Martin,” was dressed when Susan Raus Francesconi and her husband spotted him at an airport in Hawaii last May.
“My eyes popped out of my head when I saw him!” Francesconi recounted when I quizzed Facebook friends on their own celebrity intrusions.
“Martin!” her husband said to Clunes, “we are huge fans of your work!” She, in her words, gushed.
“He looked up, smiled and very politely said, ‘Thank you very much,’ ” she recalled. “What else could he say?”
She also confesses that she hid behind a column and took his picture, but adds, “I did feel bad for invading his privacy.”
ReplyDeleteIt’s hard to explain the thrill that zaps us when we see someone famous doing something ordinary, and by “we” I mean most people. I’ve heard the theory that by brushing up against the famous, we feel we’ve had a brush with immortality, but I’ll leave the psychoanalysis to others. Suffice it to say that even the famous aren’t immune to the seduction.
Shortly before the 1996 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, I was touring the nearly empty convention site at the United Center when I spotted Aretha Franklin. I was alone. So was she. While I gawked at her from a distance, she was taking a photo of a giant statue of Michael Jordan.
Obviously, photographing a statue isn’t the same as barging in on someone’s dinner, but the fact that Aretha could be as starstruck by Jordan as I was by her speaks to the thrill that even the famous may feel in the aura of someone else’s fame.
Some celebrities don’t seem to mind engaging with strangers. A few years ago, my brother Joe was dazzled to spot Dick Smothers in a Starbucks in Eugene, Ore. This was long past the heyday of “The Smothers Brothers” comedy act that made Dick and his brother Tommy famous, which may be why Dick didn’t mind being recognized.
“Hey,” Joe said when Smothers walked by his table, noting the famous man’s footwear, “you like those 5-finger shoes?”
Soon they’d embarked on a long conversation that eventually took them outside to the parking lot, where Dick showed Joe the custom motor home he was driving around the country.
As Joe’s tale suggests, there’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to approaching — or not approaching — celebrities in public, but when in doubt, better to err on the side of restraint.
And that’s why today I want to say:
Sorry, Jake. But thanks for giving me a good story, which may be all we’re really chasing when we chase the famous.

HanWay Films will oversee international sales and distribution and will commence sales at next month’s European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival, with ICM Partners handling the U.S. sale.
Gyllenhaal is also producing “Farnsworth House” with Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa (“Nebraska,” “Little Miss Sunshine”) through Bona Fide Production and Matt Flanders of In Your Face Entertainment. The film is currently in pre-production.
The Farnsworth House was designed and constructed by van der Rohe between 1945 and 1951 as a weekend retreat southwest of downtown Chicago. The retreat was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. The story will focus on the tension between Farnsworth’s practical needs being at war with the architect’s perfectionism.
“I am always looking for projects about real women, with complicated, interesting minds,” Gyllenhaal said. “They are far and few between and ‘Farnsworth House’ is a rare find. In Edith Farnsworth is the opportunity to express a full and exciting spectrum of thoughts and feelings. But there is also the opportunity for the most exciting kind of artistic experience: a collaboration. ‘Farnsworth House’ is a love story between two iconoclasts, two equally interesting players.”
