  3. Q: You and Jake Gyllenhaal now have these two really unique collaborations and characters you’ve made together. Did you write the part of Morf for him from the beginning?
DG: I did. I wrote this specifically for Jake. I did. And I wrote Renee’s part for Renee.

Q: Cool. So how much of that embodiment — the physical details, the body language — was just Jake? What was on the page? What did you build together?
DG: I gave him the script and he created everything else about the character: the look, mannerisms, how he walks, how he talks, where he lives, what kind of car he drives. We picked the Mini Cooper Clubman. He wanted that. He has a flip phone; he wanted a flip phone.

Q: Oh, right, I remember that. That was such a choice.
DG: He decided, one day — “I use a flip phone.” And I go, “Really? Why?” And he goes, “I like tradition, and my character’s a traditionalist.” And I said, “Okay!” So he’s always — you know on Nightcrawler, he was the one who said, “I’m going to lose 30 pounds, and I wear a scrunchie on my hand, and I put my hair up in a man bun.” He comes up with these things, and it’s wonderful because he’s taking ownership of the character, which is so important, right?

Velvet buzzsaw is a real vicious satire of the snob art world and might be a future Netflix's classic movie (Jake Gyllenhaal is probably one of the best actors right now)

    Jesse @Millenniowl 4h 4 hours ago
Velvet Buzzsaw is good, but it could have been better. It was advertised as a supernatural thriller, but it has more to do with the satire of the art and critic world. There were too many subplots that could haven trimmed. Jake Gyllenhaal is great as always.

Well, if we ignored the fact that this is supposed to be horror, it'd be perfectly fine! I'm mad cos this could've been in a lot of ways better. It's scary how jake gyllenhaal would make anything and everything watchable even if it's the most cliche thing ever! He's INCREDIBLE

I wish Velvet Buzzsaw was all on the level of Jake Gyllenhaal's delivery of the line “the admiration I had for your work has COMPLETELY EVAPORATED!” and then it would be improved 100%

#VelvetBuzzsaw was a fun and wild ride all the way through. Jake Gyllenhaal steals the show, just like he did in ‘Nightcrawler’ and the film is backed by some gorgeous cinematography.

Velvet Buzzsaw was more straightforward than I was expecting, but it’s a brilliantly acted and well crafted horror film. Dug the hell out of it. Jake Gyllenhaal is perfect for Mysterio cus he’s a fucking magician of an actor.

Gyllenhaal is funny and I will never tire of watching him play dudes losing their grip. It's nice to see Rene Russo again. And I quite liked the end credits imagery But I just kind of... I was bored? For as crazy a concept as this, I don't know how that happened.

  29. "Velvet Buzzsaw" director Dan Gilroy is setting the record straight about the viral video of Jake Gyllenhaal's impatient correction of the way he pronounces of the word melancholy. Turns out the whole thing was an inside-joke reference to the 2010 animated movie "Megamind."

"I have to give credit to Will Ferrell and 'Megamind,' which is a movie I really love," Gilroy told INSIDER during a phone call on Friday afternoon.

Gilroy found himself in the spotlight at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, thanks to a Hollywood Reporter interview with the "Velvet Buzzsaw" cast. As Gilroy discussed the movie's other star, Renee Russo, he used the word melancholy, pronouncing it "mell-AHN-coly."

"It's melancholy, Dan," Gyllenhaal said in a deadpan voice. He then raises his eyebrows, looking slightly annoyed. "That is not the first time today." When speaking with INSIDER, Gilroy laughed at the memory and explained how he was actually referencing the title character of "Megamind," voiced by Will Ferrell.

"Will Farrell came up with this great thing in the film where he mispronounces words, including 'melancholy,'" Gilroy said. "And he also mispronounces Metro City and calls it 'metrocity' [rhyming with ferocity]."

Gilroy says he was talking to Gyllenhaal about "Megamind" just minutes before the filmed interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"I was joking around with Jake and started saying 'melancholy' and Jake was dying [laughing]," Gilroy said. "So the camera starts rolling, and I throw out 'melancholy' as a joke to Jake and he — in all seriousness — corrects me."

The moment was noticed on Twitter, particularly by Vulture associate editor Hunter Harris (whose tweet about the video has over 21,000 favorites).

"To be honest I have no problem with [people] thinking I don't know how to pronounce the word melancholy," Gilroy said. "And also, he sort of strangely says 'It's not the first time today' ... like what does that even mean? That I've been mispronouncing the word all day? We were dying."

Gilroy says he and Gyllenhaal have "sent probably 30 text messages back and forth doing nothing but laughing" when they realized the moment had been picked up on by the media.

  33. With a vacancy arising following Ben Affleck’s departure from The Batman, bookmakers Betway have installed Jake Gyllenhaal as the favourite in the betting for the next actor to don the cape and cowl for Warner Bros. and DC Films’ upcoming Dark Knight solo movie.

Gyllenhaal, who will soon be seen as the Marvel villain Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, has long been linked to the Caped Crusader, and auditioned for the role in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins – a part which ended up going to Christian Bale (his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal then went on to star alongside Bale in The Dark Knight).

Here’s the odds you can get from Betway if you fancy a flutter…
    Jake Gyllenhaal 100/30
    Oscar Isaac 4/1
    Michael B. Jordan 5/1
    Armie Hammer 11/2
    Kit Harrington 8/1
    Jon Hamm 10/1

  39. While heterosexuals around the country were masticating chicken wings and cheering on their favorite football team, I was engaging in the time honored tradition of ignoring the Super Bowl in favor of campier entertainment. While munching on overpriced pizza and refusing to engage with everyone’s thirst tweets about Adam Levine, I decided to instead thirst over Jake Gyllenhaal in Velvet Buzzsaw, Netflix’s lowbrow horror take on the extremely highbrow art world. The film centers on a group of art insiders who find themselves stalked by cursed paintings recovered from a dead man’s apartment, each meeting a grisly death after profiting from the late artist's work.

One of those insiders is Morf Vandewalt (Gyllenhaal), an art critic with a godlike influence over the Los Angeles art scene. Morf’s reviews can make or break an artist’s career, and he’s clearly meant to stand in for the legions of queer men in exquisitely tailored suits you can find milling about any upscale gallery opening, flute of Veuve Clicquot in hand. Gyllenhaal is endlessly hilarious as Morf, a tyrant who hides behind an unassuming mask of a particularly gay breed of nebbishness — his hair flat and unstyled, his beautiful face obscured by clunky glass, his ridiculous body made accessible in well-cut suits. But despite the pains Gyllenhaal and writer/director Dan Gilroy have taken to create this obvious art fag, Morf’s main love interest in the film is a woman. Which, fine! The character is bisexual, that’s great, happy for him.

But we couldn’t at least get one hot gay sex scene? When the film begins, Morf has a gorgeous live-in boyfriend named Ed (who swims naked in his pool while the critic fastidiously writes his reviews) who he dumps for the ruthlessly ambitious Josephina (Zawe Ashton) without ever getting his cheeks clapped. I want my money back!

Why would you have Gyllenhaal play the gayest role of his career — gayer than being Heath Ledger’s literal bottom in Brokeback Mountain — and only give him straight sex scenes? This movie is gay enough to feature Toni Collette in a blonde bob with bangs but not gay enough to feature Jake Gyllenhaal having actual gay sex? Trump's America!

A more serious take might wonder if, as some have suggested, the movie wants to check off the representation box by having a queer character without showing them actually being queer. But this isn’t a serious take, and I’m just mad that we don’t have any GIFs of Jake Gyllenhaal giving head — it’s what the people want and what we deserve. Queer sex scenes featuring Jake Gyllenhaal are what the gay rights movement was founded on — not many people know this, but the gay sex scenes from Brokeback Mountain threw the first brick at Stonewall. Without new Gayenhaal content, what will we do now?

  54. Theater: Jake Gyllenhaal at the Public
    Through March 31, publictheater.org.

Jake Gyllenhaal was already a movie star in 2012, when he first set foot on a New York stage, playing a ne’er-do-well in Nick Payne’s “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet.” In 2015, when Gyllenhaal made his Broadway debut, it was as a bumbling lover in Payne’s brainy-romantic “Constellations.”

“A Life” is their latest collaboration, with Gyllenhaal as a man whose heart is too mired in mourning to love the way he needs it to. A monologue, it’s part of a double bill directed by Carrie Cracknell, in previews for an opening on Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Public Theater in Manhattan.

The other half of the program is “Sea Wall,” written by the Tony Award winner Simon Stephens and starring Tom Sturridge — Gyllenhaal’s co-star in the new Netflix movie “Velvet Buzzsaw” and a veteran of Stephens’s savage “Punk Rock.” Stephens here is far more tender, yet no less aware of mortality: Even in a sun-dappled life will come a moment when the ground falls abruptly away.

Boy, there is just so much going on right now, isn't there? This Bezos, Sanchez beard, and Patrick Whitesell (Jake's agent) is getting allllll kinds of intriguing. I think the scandal & extortion thing going on with Bezos is beginning and going to expose some things that Whitesell isn't going to want out there.

And because Whitesell is Jake's agent, that puts him and Austin in some of the worst possible company they've ever been in.

  94. Like “Sea Wall,” Payne’s “A Life” is also about a death and told in alternating chunks of narrative. And no less than Sturridge, Gyllenhaal is out to break your heart. He’s always been a soulful actor (those eyes!), and if there’s one thing the guy in this play has, it’s soul. The narrator is named Abe and he’s got two things on his mind: the death of his father and the birth of his first child.

Abe speaks the most moving lines of this emotional evening when he defines what Payne calls the three kinds of death: the physical death when the body stops functioning, the emotional death when the body is buried, and the eternal death when our names are spoken aloud for the very last time on earth. To his credit, Gyllenhaal avoids the temptation to exploit these bruising lines. His delivery is simple and direct, but the feeling he projects is suffering incarnate.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Tom Sturridge and Jake Gyllenhaal took their opening-night bows in Sea Wall/A Life at the Public Theater February 12. The production, directed by Carrie Cracknell, features two back-to-back monologue plays, one by Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) and the other by Nick Payne (Constellations).

Both plays explore the joys and pain of both love and loss as the men recall past events involving those they love.

Read reviews for the limited engagement below ...

    ReplyDelete
  96. But even if “A Life” is a bit of a comedown from “Sea Wall,” the two make smart companions. Certainly they are a model of showbiz synergy; the two actors are currently appearing together in the Netflix movie “Velvet Buzzsaw,” and Mr. Gyllenhaal previously starred in “Constellations” on Broadway.

The monologues also speak to each other. Though they were written independently — “Sea Wall” originated at the Bush Theater in London in 2008 — the Public’s production, marking the New York premiere of the combo platter, makes it seem as if they were designed to be bookends. Certainly the performances give you plenty to ponder in showing how we now read life, with or without fate, as everyone’s tragedy.

    • Speaking of money shots, Narnia is still looking for the obligatory shot of Big Sis Maggie Gyllenhaal at Lil' Bro Jake's opening night of Seawall/A Life on Thursday, Feb 14. Instead, both Big Sis and Bro-in-Law Peter Sarsgaard's social media are filled with reblogs of this "informative" video from Architectural Digest which showcase the "couple" giving everyone a tour inside the infamous brownstone ...

We saw Maggie at NY Fashion Week the week before:
Kiki Layne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Julia Jones & more in Kate Spade NY Fall 2019 Front Row at the Kate Spade New York Fall 2019 Fashion Show https://t.co/REZDgMHQnY #NYW
    — Fashionista Stories (@CheriStories) February 9, 2019

    But alas,......no opening night pics.
Could that be because Big Sis was with the hubs (Austin Nichols)? Trying to hold down the fort until Jakers could come back and quickly restore order until he had to leave for NYC again?

I’m going to go to this show and cough like Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge until Jake Gyllenhaal brings me some dang water!

For Jake Gyllenhaal, when it comes to performing a monologue live on stage, “you just gotta roll with it.” Even if there are distractions. For example, the actor, 38, was in the middle of a big speech in his new play Sea Wall/A Life when a woman started coughing “really, really loudly” from the audience.

“I felt so bad for her,” he said while relaying this story on The Tonight Show on Tuesday. “And so I just asked her if she was okay in the middle of the monologue.”

According to his own impression of the person coughing hysterically, the woman tried to fight through her fits to say she was fine. “I ran off stage and I got water and I gave it to her,” Gyllenhaal said.

That’s the stage life for yah.

Gyllenhaal’s Sea Wall/A Life is playing at New York’s Public Theatre, which he says is already close in proximity to other bars and theaters in the city, which means you hear a lot of what’s going on outside its walls.

“Things happen every night but usually when you’re doing a play, you know, a phone goes off or something happens,” the star shared. “Any random thing happens in an audience every night. So many strange things like opening up a candy that you can hear so loudly.”

The other night, he mentioned specifically, “someone was singing in the hallway, like warming up their voice, and everyone could hear it.”

Again, you just gotta roll with it.
