The movie is based on Humphrey Burton's biography of the legendary composer. Jake Gyllenhaal will play legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein in The American from director Cary Fukunaga.
The feature, which is set to begin production in the fall, is based on Humphrey Burton's biography, and will follow Bernstein's meteoric rise after conducting the New York Philharmonic at 25, all the while struggling with the fame of a career that included penning the score for On the Waterfront and the ground-breaking musical West Side Story. Michael Mitnick wrote the screenplay.
Gyllenhaal will also produce through his Nine Stories banner, along with producing partner Riva Marker. Aaron L. Gilbert will produce for Bron Studios, which is also backing the film. Fukunaga’s Parliament of Owls and Martha Parker will also produce.
Sierra/Affinity is handling international sales on the project, which will be introduced in Cannes. Endeavor Content will represent North American rights.
“Like many people, Leonard Bernstein found his way into my life and heart through West Side Story when I was a kid,” Gyllenhaal said Tuesday in a statement. “But as I got older and started to learn about the scope of his work, I began to understand the extent of his unparalleled contribution and the debt of gratitude modern American culture owes him. As a man, Bernstein was a fascinating figure — full of genius and contradiction — and it will be an incredible honor to tell his story with a talent and friend like Cary.”
Added Fukunaga: "Bernstein’s artistic passions changed the way generations understood and appreciated music. It’s been wonderful collaborating with Michael and Jake on Bernstein’s story as we endeavor to capture both the iconic person and artist. Jake is the perfect partner to help bring this story to life and to play this legend."
Gyllenhaal, who is repped by WME, will next be seen in Paul Dano's directorial debut Wildlife and the Annapurna Western The Sisters Brothers.

Now, it looks like Fukunaga has found his leading man: Jake Gyllenhaal.
Jake Gyllenhaal is coming for that Oscar, so you better watch out. The actor has joined Cary Fukunaga’s new Leonard Bernstein biopic – a part that will likely offer Gyllenhaal the chance to rack up awards galore. Bernstein was an acclaimed composer, musician and conductor, responsible for the music of West Side Story, among other things. Bernstein was an outspoken figure, and often drew controversy for his political and personal opinions, including speaking out agains the Vietnam War. Gyllenhaal is a phenomenal actor who somehow always gets overlooked come award season (hey, Academy, where the hell was that Oscar nom for Nightcrawler?). Taking on this part seems to all but guarantee awards committees will pay attention – they love biopics, after all. Cary Fukunaga is an excellent filmmaker who doesn’t work nearly as much as he should, and I’m very interested to see what he does with this material.
Interestingly enough, this is one of two possible Leonard Bernstein biopics in the works. Steven Spielberg recently held a table read for a secret project that was reported to be “an untitled biopic on iconic composer Leonard Bernstein.” Spielberg is also making a remake of West Side Story, which, of course, features Bernstein’s music. Whether or not Spielberg will go ahead with his Leonard Bernstein biopic now remains to be seen.

Since it’s playing at Cannes, I want to reiterate how terrific Wildlife is. Paul Dano and @zoeinthecities have one of the scripts of the year there, with Dano’s direction top notch. Jake Gyllenhaal, Carey Mulligan, and Ed Oxenbould are terrific. Can’t praise this one enough.

Cooper will write the screenplay with Josh Singer, who shares writing credits on Amblin's latest awards contender, The Post. Cooper will also produce through his Joint Effort banner, along with Fred Berner, Amy Durning, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Martin Scorsese and Spielberg.
The news of this Bernstein biopic comes a little over a week after the announcement that Jake Gyllenhaal would star as the legendary composer in another biopic, The American, from director Cary Fukunaga. The Walking Dead alum Austin Nichols is set for a lead role opposite Perry Mattfeld in the CW pilot In the Dark, from CBS TV Studios and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films. Brooke Markham and Keston John co-star.
Nichols will play Dean, a salt-of-the-earth cop, he’s called in to investigate when Murphy claims she has discovered Tyson’s dead body in an alley. He’s put on the case because he has a blind daughter, and it’s thought that he may be sensitive to Murphy’s situation. He also initially thinks that Murphy’s claim was the result of a drunken delusion. But as Murphy cleans up her act and presses the police to investigate, Dean begins to lend credence to her claims.
Nichols is known for his roles as Julian Baker on One Tree Hill and Spencer Monroe on The Walking Dead. He recently recurred on Bates Motel and Ray Donovan, among other credits. On the film side, Nichols will next be seen in the Ty Roberts-directed period drama The Iron Orchard. He’s repped by UTA and Silver Lining Entertainment.
