  2. Los Angeles is home to artists of many mediums, from painters to musicians to actors and actresses. Kyle Hanagami is a visionary in his medium of dance. A native to Los Angeles, he has inspired and influenced the LA dance industry with his distinctly unique choreography and precise movements. Watching Hanagami perform is seeing passion become tangible, elevating him to a level most dancers aspire to be at. Every dance move is meticulously crafted to be in perfect sync with each beat, while remaining polished and fluid. Hanagami draws his inspiration from his environment and from the people he encounters. He’s unafraid of challenges and invites the chance to try something new, rather than follow choreography trends. Because of his innate desire to stay true to himself, he will continue to stand out as one of the most influential choreographers to date.
    ...
Q: Your creative visions and concepts videos have become a new wave for dancers and choreographers to express their visions. Do you see yourself directing?
Kyle: Hell yes! I think it's the next step for me after choreographing for sure.

Q: The Letters of Love project is an amazing and touching thing for the community of dancers, friends, families, and fans to be apart of. What was your initial reaction after receiving ten of thousand of letters?
Kyle: I thought: "Fuck ya! This is so cool." Spreading love is one of the most important elements of our lives all around the world, and being [able] to help as much as we can for cancer research is beautiful.

Q: What would you do for love?
Kyle: Anything. At the end of the day, it's the only thing that really matters.

Q: Tell me about the first time you met Raf Simons.

Jake: He came to my show. I did this show [Sunday in the Park with George] on Broadway this winter and it meant a lot to me. It was about creation. It was about my kind of expression. And this guy, who’s this fashion designer and head of a major brand, came to see the show, to see what I love doing the most. Raf said, “I like you, and I’d like to collaborate with you on this idea.” Eternity is about connection, family and love. He asked me, “What does that mean to you?” To Calvin Klein, it was about family and about love. I loved that idea. My producing partner, Riva Marker, has a family of her own. She and her wife have the two most beautiful sons. Riva made Beasts of No Nation with Cary Fukunaga, and I had just done this video with Cary that she had also made happen. We decided to bring what we did for Sunday in the Park with George to this video. Raf loved that idea. Then, he suggested Liya Kebede, who I know and I love, and I think is such a wonderful human being and so beautiful. It was very organic.

    - Jessica Biel was nominated for The Sinner! She’s never been nominated for a major award like the Golden Globes before!
    - Ansel Elgort was nominated for Baby Driver, which was one of my favorite movies from this year!
    - I’m shocked Jake Gyllenhaal was snubbed for his performance in Stronger! They nominated his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal for her performance in HBO’s The Deuce. He didn’t get a Golden Globe nomination for Brokeback Mountain, and was still nominated for an Oscar for that movie. However, if he fails to get a SAG nomination, i’m not too sure about him getting an Oscar nomination…

No musical delves deeper into the painful difficulties of the creative process than this 1984 dramatic diptych by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, which leaps from the clubby art world of 1880s Paris to the corresponding scene in America a century later to explore the transcendent birth of harmony out of chaos. Expanding on their work in an earlier concert staging, Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford led a superlative cast, bringing startling emotional candor to Sarna Lapine's exquisitely sung production.

  53. Jake Gyllenhaal’s Fight To Mount ‘Stronger’ And Play A Real-Life SuperheroDecember 16, 2017 3:01 pm

Q: Luca Guadagnino describes filmmaking as alchemy—that filmmakers are charlatans and frauds essentially trying to magic an audience connection out of the mix that they make.

Jake: That’s why I’m working with Luca. We both know we’re charlatans and frauds. I’ve known him for a long time—almost a decade now. Over that decade we’ve been trying to work together, and I think I had to evolve my thinking a bit, into a place where I start to realize that filmmaking is truly about relationships. It’s taken me a couple of films to realize that the only way to do work that you’re proud of is when you have true intimacy with a filmmaker. I didn’t necessarily know that when we first met. His process, like mine, is very intimate and starts very early on. I always say I need a long runway.

To speak to what Luca said—and what Ang Lee said when I gave him an award a couple of years ago, he said, “we pretend to get closer to the truth”—I think those things are true, and it was something I had a hard time reconciling, particularly with this film. You are always aware that you’re creating a result. It’s not like being in a relationship, because in a relationship you’re not thinking of result, you’re connecting. On a film, you always know there’s a product to be made. That product will be seen and judged, and hopefully, it will move people. But I think a lot of what you’re doing is manipulating reality and manipulating the truth in order to find another way to the truth. I’ve heard filmmakers refer to films as their children…

Q: Luca literally said Call Me by Your Name was a child out in the world now and it was out of his hands.

Jake: Right. I mean, I worked with Steven Sondheim, and when I realized he didn’t have children was when I realized his pieces were his children. In the show I did, Sundays in the Park, the last song is an exaltation to art and to creation; these children he has created. The experience of creating something and then sending it out into the world, they do bear a similarity. I speak from very little experience of having children, of course.

So why isn’t Jake Gyllenhaal getting any nomations for “Stronger”??? I am blown away by his performance. A solid film depicting such an inspirational story. One of my favorite acting performances of the year!

    ReplyDelete
  56. ...
The pretty boy vibe that people get from him can always be dealt with through good performance. Case in point, Heath Ledger. Ledger too had this pretty boy, teen idol vibe to him. Remember almost no fan wanted to see him as The Joker. With a good dose of make-up, costume, great direction and his performance, this perception of Ledger is now gone. Now he is only The Joker.

    Gyllenhaal’s Acting Chops

Gyllenhaal has plenty of range to approach the role of Batman. He is extremely muscle-bound in Southpaw. Therefore, acquiring that body is possible for him to do again. He shows plenty of emotion in numerous films like Demolition or this year’s Stronger. Many of his films do exist in a rather dark, cynical and realistic setting such as Zodiac, Nightcrawler and Enemy. He plays the hero, but this hero is hardly ever the gallant, bold, courageous and dashing white knight. No, the protagonist he plays is normally in a state of suffering, misery, internal conflict and more. Sound familiar?

I do not think people are giving Gyllenhaal a fair chance here. The man has numerous roles under his belt, granted there a few not worthy of praise, but the good easily outweighs the bad. Plus, you forget this man is a highly talented, Academy-Award nominee. Yes, he is younger than Affleck but age is not always a physical, biological trait. I am sure plenty of you have heard people say of others “they don’t act their age.” Some people act younger than their perceived age and some act older, or at least that is what their peers say. Who is to say Gyllenhaal cannot act like a broken down man in his forties? Heck, until I looked up his actual age I already thought he was playing that in a couple of his films.

I think they give it to Gyllenhaal. I know that performance looks like Oscar bait, but he doesn’t transform his body, he transforms his mind. We see someone who isn’t a hero, but just a guy. A guy who is confused about his newly found status and not that excited about it.

  62. Heath was an old soul in a young man’s form, animated, kinetic, masculine, capable in all things, yet uncommonly sensitive. A loyal friend and an adoring father, his least favorite subject was himself. He was always disheveled, unconcerned with his appearance, because, like my writing partner Larry McMurtry, Heath lived in his head. He was a pure actor, much like Larry is a pure writer, in that he believed his work should speak for itself. In all his endeavors, Heath was a risk taker with an insatiable curiosity: he loved surfing and skateboarding; he was an accomplished chess player; he was an imaginative photographer with an acute eye.

Heath could be impatient and demanding, fidgety and exasperating, but then turn right around and be generous, endearing, painfully shy, humble. His evolution from teen heartthrob to his haunting portrayal of an emotionally straitjacketed rural gay in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN–a performance whose tragic force will continue to touch audiences for years to come—gave us a mere taste of his potential as an actor. 76. From spy dramas to sex thrillers, if there's a good story to tell, the award-winning actor-turned-producer will tell it her way. Maggie Gyllenhaal is back, and this time it's personal.

Not long ago, Maggie Gyllenhaal's five-year-old daughter Gloria asked her what a witch was. It was right after the US election in late 2016. She considered her answer carefully. 'I said, "A witch is a powerful woman that nobody can handle. And they had to marginalise them because of that." I'm trying to make my husband laugh, but on the other hand I think that's true,' she says jokingly. The Brooklyn-based actor, 40, also applies this kind of knowing cynicism to her professional life. She is in the business of female representation, not only as a mother and activist, but as an actor and now producer, too.

Her next film, a thriller called The Kindergarten Teacher, is a project developed almost entirely by women, with Maggie acting in almost every scene, as well as in the producer role. 'It wasn't an exercise in women making movies together, it just happened that we were a group of women,' she tells me over the inevitable kale salad in Manhattan's ABC Kitchen. 'Our sensibility was feminine, so what we were going to make when we put it all together was going to be different than if it were made by a group of men. I'm curious to see what that's going to look like.'

  95. Jake Gyllenhaal is gazing at the floor with a quizzical eye. “Is that me?” asks the actor, nodding at a smattering of scuffs in the thick-pile hotel carpet. A legacy of his nervous energy, I suggest. “I guess it must be,” he says. It’s midway through a day of interviews and the 36-year-old Californian has been chattering away for hours, his shuffling feet taking their toll on the floor. “I enjoy it,” he says, “conversations are good. I hate small talk but I love banter. I can banter all day.”

He lifts his face and smiles. The handshake is firm, the smile pleasant, though it’s the big blue eyes that have it. Gyllenhaal’s saucer-sized peepers are his on-screen signature, deep pools that beguile the viewer and add all sorts of flickering nuance to his performances. It is worth noting, however, that for all their radiance his eyes fail in their core competence; Gyllenhaal suffers from legal blindness. At school in Los Angeles he wore bottle-deep spectacles.

“I was an easy target,” he says of his school years. “And I was always a sensitive kid.” The unwanted attention made him angry and he wasn’t averse to some schoolyard scrapping. These days he tries to keep his anger in check but concedes that it’s not always that easy.

“It is like when someone cuts you up on the road,” he says. “It is scary. It could have been an accident, but then there’s your next response. The people I admire are those that just acknowledge they were scared. But I tend to go, ‘Hey, f--k you!’” I’m the same; it’s a matter of honour. He laughs. “I say this with a smile on my face by if you walk the world expecting respect you are going to be disappointed.”

    ReplyDelete
  96. Today he appears more at ease, admitting that he was an awkward teenager, rebelling against his parents and earning their displeasure when dropping out of Columbia University in a bid to pursue acting. Given his subsequent career, it appears a sound move; Gyllenhaal has become one of the most bankable stars of his generation, with critically applauded performances in the likes of Brokeback Mountain (for which he earned an Oscar nomination), Jarhead, Zodiac, End of Watch, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Southpaw and Nocturnal Animals.

“I was a wild kid in my teenage years. I definitely rebelled. I was contrary in a lot of ways, possibly because I was not the best student.” How did this rebellion manifest itself? “I partied, had fun. I don’t know how I was seen but I was definitely not super straight laced. I was never like that, though usually our perception of ourselves is very different from what other people think of us.”

He comes from a family of artists, born in Los Angeles to director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner. He is the younger brother of fellow actress Maggie while the family are also distant relations to Swedish aristocracy. Being raised in showbiz he was encouraged to dive in, taking his first role as Billy Crystal’s son in 1991’s City Slickers.

His parents hoped he’d complete his university education before taking up acting full time, but his performance in 2001’s kooky time-travel movie Donnie Darko boosted his profile and he was suddenly in high demand. He has since taken on more independent movies as well as a clutch of big-budget blockbusters like The Day After Tomorrow and Prince of Persia. He is happy doing both.

“My mum would bring me to Mike Leigh films when I was at a pretty young age so I would say that those filmmakers were a huge influence on what I love. But at the same time, and my dad is an influence on this too, I loved big commercial movies.”

    ReplyDelete
  97. He has made two films that were executive-produced by Harvey Weinstein — Proof, released in 2005 and Southpaw, 2015 — and though we meet before the allegations against the producer sent reverberations rumbling through Hollywood, it seems safe to say Gyllenhaal would be appalled. He is a keen advocate of women’s right, marching with his sister in Washington DC earlier this year.

“We are living in a time where, thankfully, feminism has evolved into a space,” he tells me. “I was brought up by an amazing, incredible sensitive father, a strong man but also by a very strong mother and a very strong, and a very smart, sister.”

His relationship with his sister has been a huge influence. “She was an actor before I was. I watched her and admired her and she has pretty extraordinary taste and a brilliant intellect. She is my older sister so she can always boss me around.”

Gyllenhaal’s career has now eclipsed his sister’s, at least in terms of box office figures; she remains best known for her work in a string of indies – the likes of Secretary, SherryBaby and Crazy Heart.

“Early on when we first began working there was competition,” he adds. “Now, we are really just dealing with one another as brother and sister, and in my case as an uncle. We have stopped watching each other’s work in a way.”

Big sister will surely watch Stronger, her younger sibling’s latest film and a determined tilt for awards season glory. He plays Jeff Bauman, a 27-year-old, working-class Bostonian who in 2013 was at his city’s marathon trying and win back his ex-girlfriend when the race was bombed. Bauman lost both legs in the blast and the film charts his bid to overcome the tragedy, to learn to walk on prosthetic limbs, and to get his life back on track.

“It’s been my most challenging role,” says Gyllenhaal. “I have been trying to understand Jeff’s mind set and what it means to have your physical life, your emotional life, your mental life wrecked, and also to have also to have all this attention and having no choice in it.”

Bauman became a poster boy for his city, a symbol of Boston’s determination to show unity in the face of adversity. One wonders, however, if a film about the subject might have come to soon? “I don’t think so. For some people, maybe, but I think for Jeff, no. I think if anything it has given him a perspective on himself. He has come so far. More than anyone I have known in my life.”

A publicist hovers at my shoulder. The interview is done. As we shake hands I glance down at Gyllenhaal’s feet; there are a few extra scuffs in the carpet.

Supposedly she works for Jake in some way but acts like a friend but also is supposed to be married and have 4 kids but her account never shows her with them. Her face is also blocked a bit but after looking at it it seems her face is always different, a couple pictures will be the same and a couple others but it’s not the same person. Someone on twitter said fhey saw Jake at Reformation in nyc and on that same day this account on four square took a picture of her being at Reformation. She supposedly went to Harvard and works for all these big time companies but when I would see her type things it looked like broken English at times! I’m so confused, can this account be fake?? If so where would they get all these pictures they post?? It’s so bizarre! Just wondered if anyone had heard of this account before. Thanks!

I really wish people would stop believing she is someone who knows Jake. It's not hard to see she's a fake. Everything she posts is stolen from someone else to give the illusion she's someone important / in NYC. I know UV would rather we not talk about her but I felt it needed to be said that she isn't who she claims to be.

I sorta figured. Around New Years she tweeted something about being at a bar with friends and they all took online quiz and she got Jake and he's her obsession.... It was quickly deleted. Think she mixed up her real account and her role-playing one. And she's been pregnant for eons. And mysteriously has two other kids, then doesn't. And "lives" on whatever coast Jake happens to be at the time. So much effort. Why not just be a "fan?" Nothing wrong with that!

As for "costars" she communicates with-if look, all she does is insinuate they met thru Jake and people are too polite to question her. Tho their have been people on Instgram who have said she's posted their pictures as her own and asked to remove. That's when she goes "private."

CAN WE PLEASE talk about how Jake Gyllenhaal gives his soul for his characters and never gets the right recognition for his work? He’s one of the best actors of our generation and it’s so sad how he is snubbed in the awards season year after year. That’s so unfair.

Stop what you’re doing and listen to the Sunday in the Park revival cast album. Jake Gyllenhaal and @TheAAshford vocals are amaaazing. So good!

Just returned to home after seeing #Stronger @derbyquad. Stunning, moving, compassionate film - the tears were rolling - but with an uplifting message which is inspirational for 2018. Try to see this. Superb acting by #Gyllenhaal and #Maslany and others.
