I just saw Jake Gyllenhaal confront/shame a guy at a coffeeshop who not-so-discreetly took his photo by earnestly imploring the guy to, "Just say you're sorry, OK? Just say you're sorry..." and it was the sweetest/saddest thing I've seen so far this year. #CelebrityProblems

  28. With competition from TV shows, the Internet, Netflix and other mediums, the number of independent films that enter into the zeitgeist become fewer and fewer. In 2017, the rare success stories included “The Big Sick” ($43 million at the domestic box office), “Wind River” ($34 million) and “Lady Bird” ($29 million), but even they didn’t do business on the same scale as a “Juno” from 2007 ($143 million).

Here are 13 movies that deserved a bigger spotlight.

    4. “Stronger”
    Domestic box office: $4.2 million
Jake Gyllenhaal embarked on an onscreen metamorphosis to portray Jeff Bauman, the hero who lost both his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013. It’s hard to know when to release an independent movie nowadays. The summer is oversaturated with blockbusters, and the fall had “It,” a surprise horror hit. “Stronger,” which opened in late September, only managed expand to 645 screens. In the end, the movie may have arrived a little too early for awards season, where Gyllenhaal should be more of a contender in the best actor race.

The TimesTalk event planned for Wednesday in New York would have featured Franco, and his younger brother, Dave, who both starred in “The Disaster Artist,” the film that earned James his Globe.

“The event was intended to be a discussion of the making of the film, ‘The Disaster Artist.’ Given the controversy surrounding recent allegations, we’re no longer comfortable proceeding in that vein,” the New York Times said in an emailed statement to Variety. ...

  33. Jake Gyllenhaal did not land a Golden Globe nomination for his lead performance in “Stronger,” in which he played Jeff Bauman, the real-life young man who lost the lower half of his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing. But the actor is still in contention for an Oscar nomination. Rather than tracing the familiar arc of the hero’s journey, the film plumbs Mr. Bauman’s ambivalence about being noisily celebrated as a patriot after the atrocity.

Mr. Gyllenhaal, 37, said that he and Mr. Bauman, who turned 31 this month, grew extremely close on the movie. “He has a light,” Mr. Gyllenhaal said during a chat with me late last year at his production offices in SoHo, which featured a hefty supply of addictive chocolate chip cookies and the amiable presence of Mr. Gyllenhaal’s German shepherd, Atticus. Here are excerpts from the interview.
    ...
Q: What do you mean by “change” in this instance?
Jake: Jeff now is somebody who is a dad, who didn’t believe he could ever do it. He’s sober now 15 months, post finishing the movie. He has changed exponentially in the past 15 months. More than anybody I know. But it doesn’t come without him struggling. It’s not like, “Oh, I’ve had my troubles with alcohol and then all of sudden they’re just gone.” Sometimes movies do paint things like that, and I think some of those things are misleading.

Jake Gyllenhaal on Ambivalent Heroes and, Um, Perms

    ReplyDelete
  34. ...
Over the course of his career, Gyllenhaal has become known for his meticulous, borderline-masochistic preparation for roles, which often leads to dramatic physical transformations. He commits all the way.

For Nightcrawler (2014), for example, he decided that his sinister character, the underground crime scene videographer, Lou Bloom, ought to have a haunted, hungry look. So he shed 14kg by running 24km a day and subsisting on a diet of kale salads and chewing gum.

Then he got implausibly ripped to play a boxer in 2015’s Southpaw, trained until he puked, and became obsessed with fighting for six solid months.

However, of all the movies he’s made, he says the one that has demanded the most of him is Stronger. “It pushed me more than I’ve ever been pushed,” he says. “I pushed myself as a result. Sometimes I took it probably too far, admittedly. I mean, it has consumed me for two-and-a-half years.”

Why was it so demanding? “It’s because I’ve never had the honour and responsibility, and if I’m really honest, the tremendous pressure to play someone that I know I could never be,” he says. “I don’t think that I would have been able to survive what he survived. And to find the sense of humour that he has.

“It just taught me more than any other film I’ve ever made. When you get to spend time with someone like that, it’s more than a lesson, it’s life changing. Getting it right and portraying him, it still stresses me out, but I love him so much, I wish he were here because you would see how incredible he is. Nothing beats the real thing.”

Gyllenhaal’s voice falters with emotion. Or maybe it’s that cold. But for someone that goes as deep into a role as he does, it can be difficult to divest himself of the character.

“There are weird moments during the day where I have these strange short-circuits,” he says. “Characters past. A movement, or an expression, or something in my voice that does something that I’ve trained, or you know where all of a sudden you’re kind of [his eye twitches and he makes stuttering noises], you know? That happens, and I think you make a commitment to a character before you dive into it knowing that it will forever leave its imprint somewhere on you. So anybody who talks about fully purging a character, it’s not true.”

On the day they wrapped on Stronger, Gyllenhaal says he wept all the way home from Boston to New York. The crew had become like family. They had cast several of Bauman’s real-life support team – his doctors and his nurses – to play themselves in the movie. Fifteen months later, Gyllenhaal and Bauman still talk “almost every day”.

Nearby, an uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job—and his sense of purpose—he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother's struggle as she tries to keep her head above water.

Actor Paul Dano makes an impressive debut as a filmmaker and—along with co-writer Zoe Kazan—elegantly adapts Richard Ford’s novel of the same name. Carey Mulligan delivers one of her finest performances as a complex woman whose self-determination and self-involvement disrupt the values and expectations of the 1960s nuclear family. With precise details and textures of its specific time and place, Wildlife commits to the viewpoint of a teenage boy observing the gradual dissolution of his parents’ marriage.

  54. Century City mall goes deluxe with $1-billion makeover to entice online shoppersJanuary 15, 2018 9:07 am

Secret A-list elevators, parking optimized for luxury cars, hotel-caliber furniture and restrooms. Sounds like Los Angeles’ latest hot spot, and it just might be — after a $1-billion makeover of the Westfield Century City mall.

The extravagant two-year upgrade, which will be officially unveiled next week, is intended to charm people into shopping on foot rather than online.

After years of seeing Amazon.com and other internet outlets encroach on their traffic and sales, mall operators are fighting back. And Westfield Corp.’s flagship Los Angeles mall is the latest example of that trend as landlords shut down marginally performing centers and elevate the best-located survivors.

Along with more than 200 mostly new shops and restaurants — including Mario Batali’s Eataly — the Century City mall will feature a VIP service offering private lounges and elevators to stores, plus special shopping hours so celebrities can browse in peace.

There are five valet stations, but shoppers who don’t want to hand a stranger the keys to their cherished car can sign up online for a reserved parking place near the main entrance on Santa Monica Boulevard. When you arrive, the gate lifts after scanning your license plate number and directs you to a reserved space under a television monitor — with your name on it. The minimum charge is $20 for a four-hour visit.

Oh, you know, like, so nice." And pet. But then, all they wanna do really is play. They bring that out in us if we allow it. That's what I like about dogs, because I don't think I'm that playful, generally. I need to be reminded, so they remind me."

The latest bit of hearsay attached to Matt Reeve's solo Batman film comes courtesy of Revenge of The Fans, who reports that Reeves' film will not be a part of the DC Film Universe. According to the site's Editor-In-Chief Mario-Francisco Robles' studio sources, “Batman is DC proper. Reeves’ Batman is connected. Just its own story.” For the moment, I would dine on that information while using a significant amount of salt for flavor. The reason I say that is because any news related to the DCEU feels like it changes by the hour, these days. So, until an official statement is made by the studio itself, all I can tell you is Bon Appétit.

Revenge of The Fans is also claiming that DC has become disenchanted with Affleck's attitude toward the character, and although he's still under contract to be the Bat, they ultimately won't mind if he walks away from the role. According to ROTF sources, “Gyllenhaal is probably Batman. Affleck is not out of it yet. That’s the thing, he still has a contract. But the studio is sour on him. If Ben rolls, Jake is in. Kind of a weird web. These guys both know they control each other’s destiny.”

  95. Jake Gyllenhaal about new Netflix movie Velvet Buzzsaw and more upcoming films
Wow. Velvet Buzzsaw — a film set in the contemporary art world, is really promising and my most anticipated movie of 2018 (which it should arrive around October via Netflix). He'll team up again with director of Nightcrawler Dan Gilroy and actress Rene Russo. Everything about this screams success in making a long-lasting film like Nightcrawler once again.

Dan Gilroy said 2017: “It’s set in the world of contemporary art in Los Angeles. It’s got a Robert Altman-like large ensemble cast. It’s got a ‘The Player’ vibe to it. There’s a large cast and we’re moving around from person to person as we move through this world. The story is being told through these different characters… It’s not a drama. It’s opening Halloween next year, that will give you some indication what kind of movie it is.”

Production designer James D. Bissell has joined the film and it is now known that filming begins on March 19th.

Supported by a script that understands Jeanette’s challenges and approaches them with rare empathy, Mulligan’s frayed performance resolves into a sad and strong and immensely powerful study of reinvention (Jeanette may be vulnerable, but there’s something fierce and admirable about how she seizes hold of her future). It’s striking to see such a proven actress deliver what’s so clearly the best work of her career, but it’s unsurprising that Dano knows what to do with his cast.

“Wildlife” is a small thing, and that modesty can feel at odds with the magnificence of its landscapes, or the monumental quality of the characters who pass through them. The drama escalates well, but the film’s last third leaves the impression that Dano’s talents could have supported something much bigger, even if it didn’t necessarily serve this story. It’s to his credit that he kept the film so contained, and even more impressive that he lets Joe’s family fray in ways that allow them to exist for after that last cut to black. The final scene of this resonant and quietly moving debut is unforgettable for how it reconciles the beauty of an idea with the reality that burns it alive. Fire can be a positive force, someone says. It can melt us down, and forge us into something new.

    Grade: A-

  103. Exactly 10 years after the death of Heath Ledger, his friend and former co-star Jake Gyllenhaal still can't put in to words what his relationship with the late star meant to him.

While attending the premiere of his film Wildlife at the Sundance Film Festival, Gyllenhaal spoke to E! News, "Friendship can't be explained in a sound bite or can it in three-minute interview and those who can do it I find sort of odd. I happen to not be one of those people."

Gyllenhaal, who appeared in 2005's Brokeback Mountain with the Australian star, did explain that he understood that many, including himself, were moved by the actor's presence in life. "I think Heath meant a lot to a lot of people, the people who were fans and the people who saw his work and were moved by his work and the people who knew him as a person.

The 37-year-old concluded, "He was just an incredible force and is still missed."

Ledger tragically died of an accidental overdose on Jan. 22, 2008.

  114. Grief affects us all, no matter what our circumstances – and Michelle Williams is no exception. On 22 January 2008, her former partner and close friend, Heath Ledger, passed away from an accidental overdose: since then, Williams has raised their daughter, Matilda (now 11), by herself.

“In all honesty, for pretty much everything else, I feel like I’m a believer in not fighting circumstances, accepting where you are and where you’ve been,” the actress explained in an interview with Porter.

“In pretty much all senses but one, I would be able to go totally down that line of thinking were it not for Matilda not having her dad. You know, that’s just something that doesn’t… I mean, it just won’t ever be right.”

Thankfully, though, she has a fantastic support group around her – particularly in best friend Busy Phillips, who is also Matilda’s godmother.

Williams and Phillips first met on the set of Dawson’s Creek way back in 2000 – and have been “forever friends” ever since. “She’s proof that the love of your life does not have to be a man,” Williams previously said of Phillips.

So it’s unsurprising that, earlier this week, Phillips booked an airplane ticket and flew to be with Williams on the 10-year anniversary of Ledger’s death. On Monday evening, Philipps shared a photo of her view of the sunset from an airplane with a red heart emoji.

Hours later, she posted a follow-up selfie of her with her former Dawson’s Creek co-star.
“It’s OK,” Philipps wrote alongside the picture, which showed Williams leaning on her shoulder with her eyes closed.

Ledger and Williams fell in love after meeting on the set of their 2005 film Brokeback Mountain and welcomed daughter Matilda in October 2005. They separated in September 2007, but remained firm friends until his death.

    ...
Gyllenhaal has been too good too often to label any one of her performances as her best, but she’s certainly never been better than she is here. In a remake that has little purpose beyond translating a good story for a global audience, Gyllenhaal almost single-handedly justifies the whole project, filling her character with the full courage of her convictions, and finding deep reservoirs of distressed humanity in all of her contradictions. You believe that Lisa is a great teacher and an unhinged lunatic. You believe that she’s sincere in her support of Jimmy’s poetry and that she’s selfishly using the little boy as an opportunity to transcend the banality of her own life (which comes with an average husband and two teenage kids who can smell their mother’s disappointment in herself). You believe that Jimmy’s poetry is wasted on our world and that Lisa is finding the wrong answers to the right questions.

Jake Gyllenhaal is one of those people that I just know has an existential crisis at least once a week. They asked my boi what's his favorite color and he was like "I can't decide… there are so many of them"

Looks like @AustinNichols is with @HassieHarrison now. If so, I'd say he is doing just fine. She may not(yet) be the star Chloe is, but she seems like a spectacular person...smart, beautiful, witty as hell, compassionate, and fun.

    fingers crossed!

Maybe Austin left Chloe for Hassie.

I’ve never met a gay person who regretted coming out – including myself. Life at last begins to make sense, when you are open and honest. Today is the 30th anniversary of the BBC radio discussion when I publically said I was gay. So I’m celebrating!

and Austin liked this one, too

Yes (maybe some modeling, too??). In addition, she is from a prominent philanthropic Dallas family & a cousin of @starksands. AFAICT she met her on/off bf/ex-fiance @WilsonBethel through him. SS & WB were both in #GenerationKill (FWIW: Stark's performance rocked!)

"It’s flattering when there’s a rumor that says I’m bisexual. It means I can play more kinds of roles. I’m open to whatever people want to call me. I’ve never really been attracted to men sexually, but I don’t think I would be afraid of it if it happened." - Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany not being recognized by the #oscars for Stronger shows the whole thing is fucking bullshit. All this controversy is so sad because people are so hurt that they don't get enough of these petty awards, but the whole thing is bullshit anyway.

Watching the movie Zodiac, paused it to watch a Jake Gyllenhaal interview real quick. Cut to - 20 mins later and I’m watching every Jake interview from every late night talk show ever. I love Jake.

pretty much nearly every performance he’s done he deserves. he stay giving us award-winning performances. Jake Gyllenhaal is just like what Leonardo DiCaprio used to be. he’ll keep getting snubbed and get one-... eventually. just gonna take a while.
