  4. Campy teen dramas have given us so much. It’s been nearly two decades since two up-and-coming teen stars met on Dawson’s Creek, and Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps have become one of Hollywood’s closest friendships ever since. When Philipps was added as a series regular and met Williams, the two became inseparable. Through hard times (Heath Ledger’s death), good times (post–Golden Globes pasta!) and every red carpet imaginable, Williams and Philipps can often be found side by side. “I’m so in love with her,” Williams told People in December. “She’s proof that the love of your life does not have to be a man! That’s the love of my life right there.” So now, a history of one of Hollywood’s best friend couples:

2001: Fresh from a main role on Freaks and Geeks, Busy Philipps joins Dawson’s as recurring character Audrey Liddell during the show’s fifth season.

    TUESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2017
Two Years Ago on August 23, 2015

How time flies! Sunday, August 20 was the seven (7) year anniversary of Jake and Austin spending "them" time in Leadville, Colorado during the Leadville Trail 100 Run. By now, we all know the story of how we had totally missed this was Austin standing beside Jake, but oh, we know now, don't we?

(Jake and Peter in Leadville photos)

It was soon after the twosome had become proud parents once again.

And today, August 23, is the two (2) year anniversary of a good friend of Special K's spotting Jake and Austin having dinner on a Sunday night in 2015 right around 8 in the evening, in Koreatown. And thanks to Facebook heroine Margie, we know that Jake and Austin were to become proud parents once again several months later in December. #Congras !!!! all the way around.

So August is indeed a special month for us Jaustin fans because it has seemed to be for them. It has been over a year since Jake and Austin were photo'd together at SXSW on March 12, 2016.

And it probably will be a long, long time before they're seen in public together again. But this, we know. These two men have life moments which legally bind them together, unlike many "typical" Hollywood couples. They've known each other since 2002, went deep into the closet in 2012 post-Berlinale. But time after time after time after time, we have seen many signs that they're still very much together.

And so today, we tip our glasses to Jake and Austin. May they continue to work at the relationship that they have and we don't have to have pictures to be happy about their union. Some day, down the road......they'll probably cause the bottle rockets to go off and stun us all, but for now, we celebrate these two special August days.

If you, for whatever reason, follow the news around various comic book properties, you likely know that Martin Scorsese is working on an origin story film about The Joker and some other guys are working on a rom-com about The Joker that an anonymous studio guy described as "When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine." As an elegant and put-together young woman cycling through a roster of normal, healthy behaviors because of a constant state of near-panic about the looming threat of "getting in trouble" or "being scolded," I don't know anything about drugs. What I do know is that When Harry Met Sally is a toxic little movie I love deeply and problematically and it's about two friends who fall in love over the course of 12 years, all the while driving home a dubious moral takeaway which is "men and women can't be friends." It will be odd if this is the gist of the Joker movie, but I will certainly see it 10 times.

Anyway, Scorsese's movie will not star Jared Leto and so plenty of bloggers set about guessing who it might star. Several said Jake, arguing that he was very creepy in Nightcrawler. Does anyone think for even one second? Jake and Heath Ledger were BFFs until the latter died and then won a posthumous Oscar for playing the Joker!!!!! Please never talk to me about this idiotic idea ever again!!! Please don't even bring up Nightcrawler with me because as you know, it will force me to tell the story of Jake punching a mirror on the set of Nightcrawler and subsequently going to the hospital for a semi-serious hand injury and we have literally talked about it 500 times already.

  19. The US premiere of “Stronger,” the movie about Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, will not be held in a fancy theater in New York, Los Angeles, or even in Boston.

Instead, the much-anticipated movie starring Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal will screen first, on Sept. 12, at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, where Bauman and 31 others injured in the bombings were treated.

“It’s important for us to be in that space,” says “Stronger” director David Gordon Green.
    ...
In the interest of authenticity, Green said many of the real-life people who treated and worked with Bauman — including nurses, the surgeon, physical therapists, and the prosthetic team — play themselves in “Stronger.”

“This was a story we didn’t want to embellish with too much Hollywood glitz and glamour,” he said. “For example, when we were talking with the prosthetic technicians, they were speaking in a technical language I’m not familiar with, and it was a struggle to imagine how I could re-create that with actors.”

In addition to Gyllenhaal, who earned a best supporting actor nod for his performance in “Brokeback Mountain,” “Stronger” costars “Orphan Black” actress Tatiana Maslany as Erin and Miranda Richardson as Bauman’s mother, Patty. (Gyllenhaal, Maslany, and Green are all expected to attend the premiere.)

  33. AUGUST 26, 2017

Earlier this week, new broke that Warner Bros. and DC Films are planning a major new direction for their DC slate. In addition to the DC Extended Universe films, which tie-in to a shared continuity, the studio plans to introduce a new banner that will allow for different iterations of their iconic characters with new actors in the role. And they’re already developing their first film; a Joker origin story from Todd Philips, Scott Silver and Martin Scorcese, which will see a new actor as the Clown Prince of Crime.

The Joker origin movie is said to be “a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City” that is intended to feel like one of Scorsese’s films from that era, along the lines of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy. Naturally, the idea is to do something different with the character than what we’ve seen in the previous cinematic incarnations (not to mention a format that sets the DC universe apart from the MCU) from Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and most recently, Jared Leto and early reports suggest the studio may be eyeing a younger actor for the role. How young, we don’t know, but just to be safe, we’ve cast a pretty wide age-range in our picks for the new Joker.

Check out the choices in the list below, which includes some popular internet fan-casting, including The Purge‘s Rhys Wakefield and Cameron Monaghan, who played a Joker-esque role on the Batman-eque TV series Gotham. We’ve also included some of our favorites from the role, including Bill Skarsgard, who will be seen as another iconic clown in the Warner Bros. family when IT lands in theaters this month, Will Poulter, who perhaps not so coincidentally was set to play Pennywise before Skarsgard landed the role, and Jake Gyllenhaal, who proved he can play a perfect psychopath in his outstanding Nightcrawler performance (but seems especially unlikely for the role considering his close relationship with the late Heath Ledger), among others. You’ve probably got your own set of preferences, so let your voice be heard in the poll below, or if we’ve missed your favorite pick, be sure to sound off in the comments.

  38. I loved Nocturnal Animals, but I found it depressing. I had read the book it was based on too, which had some additional themes in it, one being that the subject of the book, one of Jake's characters, was too civilized in his idea of justice, because some people just are not good or redeemable. Another theme was Amy Adams' character who had put her own dreams for husband and family, and then not getting any reciprocation for it.

  40. Few rotten tomatoes:

Nocturnal Animals, written and directed by Tom Ford, is essentially two separate films, with the better one folded inside the bad one.

Boasts some gripping scenes and a few stabs at satire, but ultimately offers little beyond its assured sense of style.

Ultimately the drama, adapted from a 1993 book by Austin Wright, constitutes a loose assemblage of ideas about romantic betrayal, selfishness, and regret.

Movies with characters who have so much at stake should not hang on the screen like works of modern art.

I felt sorry for Gyllenhaal, berated in both his personae for being weak, and for Adams, strapped and laced into a role that scarcely lets her breathe.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I’d love to tell you Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals” is a cinematic masterpiece, and for most of its running time, that’s what I was planning to do. You must see it. But a great movie requires a great ending, and “Nocturnal Animals” doesn’t have one.

Ford, the fashion designer whose first film was “A Single Man,” has this time crafted a romantic thriller of mesmeric beauty, suspenseful, eerie and singular. At times it has the desperate power of “Vertigo”; in moments it echoes David Lynch. More than any film I’ve seen this year, it’s gorgeously, hauntingly well-crafted. Film is what Ford was born to do, and “Nocturnal Animals” made me hate its director for wasting most of his life cutting pants.

    http://nypost.com/2016/11/16/mesmerizing-tom-ford-thriller-nocturnal-animals-is-a-must-see/

    ReplyDelete
  42. "At times it has the desperate power of “Vertigo”; in moments it echoes David Lynch."

    That it does.

I thought the themes were slightly different in it - Amy Adams' character lives in a phony world, but it is safer than the real one, and her friend tells her.

James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal are excellent in #TheDeuce. @BenTTravers reviews the outstanding new HBO series: http://bit.ly/2vYMf8K pic.twitter.com/1dFY25tTw9

... Led by a moving performance from Maggie Gyllenhaal, as an independent prostitute working without a pimp, “The Deuce” defines itself more from the female perspective than any sort of male gaze. Anyone turned on by the nudity — male and female, in equal measure — isn’t paying attention to the story. The danger within the lives of these working women is obvious, and the story and visuals don’t shy away from it. It challenges you to view sex as the characters do: a trade.

But “The Deuce” also illustrates how the patriarchy takes advantage of the people providing the product. That includes men, too, who struggle at the bottom of the rung, busting their ass and breaking their back with no plan for ascension. But it’s the women who do so without legitimate hope for real gain. Pimps rule their prostitutes with authority just as white men in suits make the rules for how women use their bodies. Simon, Pelecanos, and MacLaren make the glass ceiling visible, and that adds all the more significance to this story.

“The Deuce” is studiously made without ever feeling educational. It’s a marriage of narrative and production that “Vinyl” strived for and never achieved, but the eight-episode first season has far more on its mind than sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. Viewers will benefit from closely scrutinizing each scene, even though it’s surprisingly easy to sit back and let the series wash over you.

At a time when powerful people are eager to take more control over the neglected populace, “The Deuce” shines a light on the great American melting pot. It elevates a subset of the population being pushed down in every way it can, cinematically and conceptually, and anyone watching would be hard-pressed not to start paying better mind to the humanity all around us. You may not realize it while it’s happening, but “The Deuce” will make you take a good look in the mirror — and think long and hard about what you see.

    Grade: A

“The Deuce” Season 1 premieres Sunday, September 10 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

  78. Coming off “The Big Sick,” the most successful independent movie of the summer, Michael Showalter has found a new project. He’s signed a developmental deal with Fox Searchlight to direct a contemporary Western-slash-thriller called “The Last Ride of Cowboy Bob,” Variety has learned.

The story will follow a real-life ’90s Texas bank robber named Peggy Jo Tallas, who got away with her heists by dressing up as a man, aka “Cowboy Bob.” Her disguises were carefully crafted, with the help of a towel stuffed under her shirt, a leather jacket and a fake beard. The lead actress has not yet been cast, but it will be a strong and showy part.

Fox Searchlight will finance the indie film. It will be produced by Riva Marker and Jake Gyllenhaal through their company Nine Stories.

“Cowboy Bob” is based on Texas Monthly article from 2005 written by Skip Hollandsworth. “She was one of the most unusual bank robbers of his generation, a modern-day Bonnie without a Clyde,” is one way Peggy Jo was described. The movie will have both comedic and dramatic touches (a la the Coen brothers).

  81. “We have two goals,” says Gyllenhaal, seated next to Marker in their new offices in SoHo in downtown New York. “One is to find material I can do as an actor. And also, it’s to champion the filmmakers we love.” He notes that when he’s not appearing in a project, he’ll be involved behind the camera only.

Nine Stories’ game plan is to back edgy, independent films in the $10 million-to-$40 million-budget range, TV series and stage productions (such as “Sunday in the Park With George,” starring Gyllenhaal, which had a limited, sold-out run on Broadway in the spring). Many of its film titles are financed through a first-look deal with Bold Films, an agreement that was recently extended through 2020. “They have so much passion and such great taste,” says Gary Michael Walters, the CEO of Bold Films. “They have very quickly evolved into true producers.”

  97. Jake Gyllenhaal And More Collab with Refinery29 To Create 29 Memorable Rooms

Refinery29’s 29 Rooms lands in Brooklyn this week (8/8-8/11) and it’s bigger, badder, and more imaginative than ever. The theme for the warehouse-turned-funhouse this year is “Turn It Into Art” and it in addition to offering more selfie opportunities than you can imagine, visitors will be relieved to know that there are a few cathartic experiences as well, like getting the opportunity to relax and meditate in a red, cushioned, womb-like tent, being transfixed by a rotating floating sculpture of Chloe X Halle’s heads made of mesh wire while listening to the sisters’ harmonic voices on headphones, and taking out some aggression in a girl power themed room filled with boxing gloves and punching bags.

Not surprisingly, some stellar Hollywood figures chose to attach themselves to this project including Jake Gyllenhaal, Jill Soloway, and Emma Roberts. Their booths—a display of manual paper shredders, pens and papers by Gyllenhaal, an oversized typwriter by Roberts, and a gender neutral high school restroom—seem particularly relevant to some of the political direction and social issues that many are struggling with today.

  99. Stronger review – Jake Gyllenhaal is Oscar-worthy in moving Boston marathon drama
    ...
It’s a refreshingly unconventional style that also allows Gyllenhaal the opportunity to truly impress. Another actor could have struggled with such naked camera work, the mechanics of their work seeming, well, mechanical, but Gyllenhaal is effortlessly good here. It’s an awards-worthy performance for a star who so often gets miscast and he sells both the good and the bad within Bauman. It’s pleasing, in a field full of overly deferential biopics, to see a fact-based drama based on a book written by the subject, that still contains nuance. Bauman is not a saint: he’s often selfish and immature, and by keeping these flaws in the movie, we become that much more involved in his story.
    ...
Maslany is a perfectly cast partner here, delivering an equally naturalistic performance, erring on the right side of sentimentality and there’s also fine support from Miranda Richardson as Jeff’s hard-drinking mother.

Stronger is a film filled with warmth and humanity, but one that doesn’t sugarcoat the reality that comes with it. Bauman is an inspiring figure but he’s also just a guy, full of imperfections like everyone else. Throughout the film he finds the title of ‘hero’ to be unearned and there’s a similar avoidance of loftiness by Green and Gyllenhaal, who both work hard at grounding the film. For some, it might seem too underplayed but by keeping things small, it somehow feels that much bigger.

Stronger screened at the Toronto film festival and will be released on 22 September in the US and on 8 December in the UK

  100. Toronto Film Review: Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘Stronger’

Jake Gyllenhaal is superb in David Gordon Green's moving Boston Marathon bombing tale.

Sometimes movies impress you with their formal daring, their transgressiveness, their experimental boldness. Sometimes movies win you over with visual spectacle, novelty, unpredictability. And sometimes movies don’t necessarily have any of those qualities, they just flat-out work. David Gordon Green’s “Stronger,” a familiar yet undeniably moving film about Jeff Bauman, the everyman Bostonian who lost both his legs in the 2013 Marathon bombing, is a movie that just works.

  111. TIFF 2017 REVIEW: ‘STRONGER’ IS DAVID GORDON GREEN’S BEST FILM YET.
    ...
What I admire so much about Stronger is that the film doesn’t focus on the bombing but rather how the event effected the life of Jeff, his family, and his girlfriend. I applaud screenwriter John Pollono for adapting Bret Witter and Jeff Bauman’s story in a way that is very true to life. Jeff isn’t shown as this hero which everyone makes him out to be after surviving the attack. Instead, he is shown as flawed, lazy, and sometimes even a bit unlikeable.
    ...
John Pollono wasn’t afraid to tackle the hypocrisy of how others view victims of a horrific event. People often put people on pedestals because they survived an act of terror. Jeff questions why everyone continues to say they are proud of him and why the city treats him like royalty. His very own family begins to exploit the incident as a way to get their 15 minutes of fame.
    ...
Jake Gyllenhaal once again proves that he can tackle any role. Gyllenhaal becomes Jeff Bauman and adds a real sense of authenticity to his performance. There are moments where as a viewer you feel as though you know Jeff as a person. Gyllenhaal’s performance combined with the strong writing and solid direction to connect with Jeff Bauman as a person. You get a sense of his personality and what makes him tick. Jeff’s living situation is very controlled therefore it is no surprise that during one scene Erin asks Jeff to “man up” and stop letting his mother baby him.

Speaking of Erin, Tatiana Maslany gives a career defining performance as Erin Hurley. Again, just like Gyllenhaal, she presents Erin as a real person and not some Hollywoodized depiction. She can come off as a bit “bitchy” at times but that’s understandable due to the situations that she is forced to face. It is very obvious that Erin loves Jeff and always tries to look past his flaws or mistakes. There is a scene in Erin’s car where the two begin to have a serious conversation about their future. Erin begins to break down which as a result causes Jeff to start yelling back. This is such an intense and honest moment. This one scene could result in a nomination for both of the actors. This is how emotionally powerful the scene is.

The event is held every year on or around 9/11 to commemorate the day of the World Trade Center attacks. 658 Cantor Fitzgerald employees, approximately 68% of the company’s workforce, died in the attacks on 9/11.

  113. Forget Tatiana Maslany, Jake Gyllenhaal dubs ‘Stronger’ inspiration his ‘boyfriend’

Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany may have some amazing on-screen chemistry in their new film Stronger, but nothing beats the off-screen love affair between Gyllenhaal and the movie’s inspiration, Jeff Bauman. The two became so close during production that Bauman’s friends now refer to Gyllenhaal as his “boyfriend.”

“Yeah, people get jealous and salty,” Bauman told our Danielle Graham.

“They get salty sometimes,” Gyllenhaal confirmed, “Your friends have a very complex way of describing our relationship.”

Bauman is the subject of Stronger, based on his book about losing his legs in the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, his recovery and how it tested his relationships.

The film, which saw its world premiere at TIFF this year, stars Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany as Bauman's then-girlfriend, Erin Hurley. Hurley was a primary caregiver and rock for Bauman during his recovery, despite his frequent attempts to push her away. The couple was married in 2014 and has a two-year-old daughter together, though they filed for divorce earlier this year.

    (video)

Despite the obviously serious material in Stronger, the film is also surprisingly humourous. According to Maslany, director David Gordon Green was the perfect person to depict Bauman’s humour in the face of tragedy.

“I think a lot of [Jeff’s] survival skills were built into his humour,” she says. “He’s always bringing down the house… What’s so cool about David Gordon Green directing a movie like this is that he has that total sense of comedy and timing and how to pop a scene out suddenly from the depths of this very heavy material to a laugh.”

Transitions like that can be difficult for a cast, but Miranda Richardson says the work was “intense” but completely worth it.

“The most interesting thing for me is the combination of Jake and David because David has the overlay of surreal humour and so you have to go in and play,” she says. “Even though we’re talking about dark things… I think they play off each other well.”

When I realized that this new shorty flick of Austin and his new BFF Paul Wesley, was entitled "Isabel", it made me recall the whole infamous "Isabel Who?" PR debacle from 2010.

On April 2, Lamey (Lainey Gossip) posted this nonsense:
The McJakey campaign was born after Rachel McAdams and Jake Gyllenhaal presented together at the Oscars. Unfortunately there will be no McJakey. Not yet. Because it looks like Jakey is tied up with someone else. Jake is currently shooting a movie in Montreal called Source Code. Last night he was spotted at Garde Manger and I’m told exclusively that he was “all cuddled up” with Isabel Lucas. She’s the actress from Transformers 2. ...

  129. "his new BFF Paul Wesley"

PG always lies. Austin's "new" BFF is Austin's friend since 2006 and Lenexa, 1 Mile.

  133. Elevator pitch: Hollywood ending has the finishing kick.

Jeff Bauman, who showed up at the 2013 Boston Marathon to cheer on his ex-girlfriend Erin Hurley and lost both legs to a terrorist’s bomb, was a man caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yet this biopic starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany eschews all dramatic irony in favour of admirable realism about disability, working-class Boston and America’s unquenchable thirst for heroes. Director David Gordon Green even shows you the mildew stains in the bathroom of the cramped apartment Jeff shares with his foul-mouthed, hard-drinking, Oprah-worshipping mom (Miranda Richardson, in a standout transatlantic performance).

But realism will only take you so far, and Stronger eventually opts for a conventional tale of rekindled romance and resurgent resilience that, given how rough-and-tumble Jeff’s prior existence seems, will leave a skeptical audience wondering how long this happy ending can possibly last. The real Jeff and Erin divorced last winter. – Kate Taylor

  134. Conventional tale? Lazy Kate, what are you saying, that Jeff made up rekindled romance and marriage? That divorce means that Jeff and Erin weren't happy for a while?

Austin working on his movie and Jake promoting 'Stronger' is manipulation?
    Nope, just PG being retarded.
